listlesnesse_n it_o make_v a_o man_n as_o a_o log_n that_o move_v not_o to_o god_n in_o prayer_n so_o it_o wrought_v in_o nabal_n and_o achitophel_n it_o breed_v such_o discouragement_n as_o often_o end_v in_o death_n of_o worldly_a sorrow_n and_o such_o be_v all_o sorrow_n whereof_o god_n be_v not_o the_o end_n come_v death_n but_o when_o it_o be_v right_a and_o true_a and_o kind_o sorrow_n for_o sin_n it_o do_v that_o which_o a_o affection_n shall_v do_v it_o quicken_v he_o to_o do_v that_o which_o he_o ought_v to_o do_v so_o fear_v when_o it_o be_v right_o work_v and_o so_o all_o not_o the_o great_a joy_n that_o discover_v itself_o in_o laughter_n that_o be_v not_o the_o great_a sorrow_n which_o work_v the_o most_o violent_a commotion_n in_o the_o heart_n there_o be_v a_o sad_a silent_a quiet_a sorrow_n that_o sink_v deep_a and_o wet_v more_o slow_o and_o soak_v into_o the_o heart_n and_o make_v the_o heart_n more_o fruitful_a in_o the_o issue_n which_o arise_v out_o of_o a_o more_o spiritual_a conviction_n of_o judgement_n of_o the_o evil_a of_o sin_n though_o less_o passion_n accompany_v it_o yet_o a_o strong_a and_o deep_a affection_n of_o sorrow_n be_v wrought_v i_o call_v it_o deep_o because_o it_o be_v more_o constant_a and_o last_a more_o to_o purpose_n the_o one_o be_v as_o a_o land-floud_n the_o other_o as_o a_o spring_n put_v the_o case_n such_o a_o violent_a sorrow_n shall_v be_v 2_o great_a yet_o it_o be_v not_o always_o alike_o necessary_a neither_o on_o god_n part_n nor_o man_n not_o on_o man_n part_n as_o some_o disease_n do_v not_o part_n need_v so_o sharp_a and_o quick_a a_o medicine_n as_o a_o other_o as_o some_o man_n flesh_n be_v hard_a to_o heal_v than_o other_o so_o some_o man_n heart_n have_v more_o stubbornness_n in_o they_o than_o other_o some_o have_v make_v themselves_o child_n of_o the_o devil_n by_o their_o wicked_a course_n worse_o than_o they_o be_v at_o first_o other_o in_o comparison_n be_v but_o as_o the_o child_n of_o adam_n still_o as_o they_o be_v bear_v and_o therefore_o the_o same_o work_n may_v be_v wrought_v in_o they_o with_o much_o less_o ado_n on_o god_n part_n it_o be_v not_o always_o so_o necessary_a but_o part_n be_v proportion_v to_o god_n end_n and_o god_n differ_v and_o be_v various_a in_o his_o end_n concern_v man_n he_o mean_v to_o bestow_v a_o great_a measure_n of_o grace_n 1_o upon_o one_o then_o upon_o a_o other_o and_o where_o he_o mean_v to_o set_v a_o great_a building_n there_o he_o dig_v a_o low_a foundation_n he_o mean_v to_o use_v some_o as_o a_o mean_n to_o comfort_v other_o and_o therefore_o let_v they_o see_v and_o feel_v more_o the_o bitterness_n of_o sin_n that_o they_o may_v be_v able_a to_o comfort_v other_o with_o the_o same_o comfort_n wherewith_o they_o have_v be_v comfort_v he_o differ_v in_o the_o mean_n to_o attain_v his_o end_n if_o 2_o he_o mean_v to_o bring_v they_o to_o the_o same_o measure_n of_o grace_n yet_o he_o will_v violent_a a_o sorrow_n but_o from_o some_o circumstance_n in_o the_o work_n itself_o as_o first_o because_o the_o light_n of_o comfort_n come_v in_o soon_o to_o some_o than_o to_o other_o they_o have_v the_o salve_n present_o late_a after_o the_o wound_n be_v give_v god_n have_v break_v the_o heart_n bind_v it_o up_o present_o again_o a_o man_n may_v have_v as_o deep_a a_o wound_n which_o a_o mitigate_v medicine_n come_v near_o to_o the_o bottom_n of_o the_o disease_n and_o soon_o apply_v may_v soon_o heal_v than_o another_o less_o deep_a to_o which_o the_o remedy_n be_v not_o apply_v a_o simile_n long_a time_n after_o which_o therefore_o ask_v long_o so_o also_o it_o be_v in_o joy_n suddenness_n increase_v it_o for_o a_o fit_a for_o example_n put_v case_n a_o man_n be_v condemn_v for_o high_a treason_n and_o bring_v to_o the_o block_n and_o very_o expect_v death_n and_o his_o pardon_n on_o the_o sudden_a come_v there_o be_v such_o a_o great_a sensible_a change_n wrought_v in_o he_o and_o our_o nature_n be_v sensible_a of_o great_a change_n and_o therefore_o how_o excessive_o do_v he_o rejoice_v but_o take_v one_o who_o be_v guilty_a of_o the_o same_o fault_n who_o know_v that_o if_o he_o have_v not_o his_o pardon_n he_o shall_v lose_v his_o life_n but_o have_v his_o pardon_n present_o after_o the_o sentence_n pass_v he_o will_v prize_v his_o pardon_n as_o much_o as_o the_o other_o though_o happy_o he_o be_v not_o so_o turbulent_o affect_v as_o the_o other_o it_o fall_v out_o thus_o by_o reason_n of_o the_o ignorance_n some_o ignorance_n have_v live_v in_o before_o who_o therefore_o be_v enlighten_v to_o know_v their_o estate_n all_o on_o the_o sudden_a whereas_o a_o other_o have_v be_v bring_v up_o in_o knowledge_n and_o the_o knowledge_n of_o his_o misery_n be_v let_v in_o by_o degree_n than_o the_o case_n do_v also_o differ_v as_o between_o two_o man_n who_o be_v to_o go_v through_o a_o wood_n whereof_o one_o be_v simile_n set_v upon_o by_o thief_n not_o suspect_v any_o and_o be_v put_v into_o a_o fear_n of_o his_o life_n and_o know_v not_o how_o to_o escape_v but_o one_o come_v on_o the_o sudden_a and_o rescue_v he_o and_o give_v he_o his_o life_n but_o another_o be_v warn_v before_o know_v he_o must_v go_v through_o such_o a_o passage_n and_o that_o unless_o he_o have_v a_o strong_a guard_n to_o go_v along_o with_o he_o he_o shall_v certain_o perish_v this_o man_n apprehend_v the_o danger_n as_o great_a as_o the_o other_o and_o the_o benefit_n as_o great_a and_o the_o love_n of_o he_o that_o shall_v go_v with_o he_o as_o great_a only_o his_o passion_n either_o of_o fear_n or_o joy_n be_v not_o so_o violent_a as_o the_o other_o though_o he_o true_o rejoice_v in_o the_o deliverance_n as_o much_o as_o the_o other_o and_o think_v himself_o as_o much_o bind_v to_o the_o man_n that_o deliver_v he_o i_o have_v speak_v these_o thing_n because_o some_o be_v scrupulous_a in_o the_o point_n and_o think_v they_o may_v not_o safe_o apply_v the_o promise_n because_o they_o have_v not_o have_v that_o measure_n of_o sorrow_n that_o other_o have_v have_v but_o let_v no_o man_n suffer_v his_o assurance_n to_o he_o weaken_v for_o want_n of_o this_o for_o a_o man_n may_v have_v as_o high_a a_o esteem_n of_o christ_n and_o be_v as_o thorough_o convince_v of_o sin_n though_o he_o want_v that_o violent_a work_n which_o god_n work_v in_o some_o even_o a_o great_a sense_n of_o his_o wrath_n and_o let_v they_o lie_v there_o and_o then_o speak_v peace_n so_o as_o these_o be_v wrought_v by_o distinct_a act_n and_o cause_n in_o a_o great_a distance_n one_o from_o the_o other_o so_o that_o as_o their_o sorrow_n be_v evident_a so_o their_o joy_n be_v evident_a in_o another_o he_o work_v so_o that_o as_o soon_o as_o he_o see_v sin_n he_o see_v god_n also_o pardon_v and_o in_o those_o that_o have_v that_o violent_a shine_a of_o affection_n in_o their_o first_o humiliation_n look_v how_o much_o of_o it_o be_v violent_a will_v vanish_v and_o what_o be_v substantial_a will_v hold_v so_o that_o even_o they_o in_o the_o end_n come_v to_o this_o solid_a conviction_n of_o judgement_n at_o last_o which_o only_o be_v constant_a and_o abide_v with_o they_o and_o therefore_o let_v not_o thy_o assurance_n be_v weaken_v for_o the_o want_n of_o this_o for_o faith_n unite_v to_o christ_n and_o establish_v we_o in_o well_o do_v but_o you_o will_v say_v be_v it_o not_o good_a to_o get_v that_o sensible_a stir_a sense_n and_o sight_n of_o sin_n object_n i_o answer_v yes_o for_o to_o that_o end_n god_n lead_v through_o cross_n and_o suffer_v thou_o to_o fall_v into_o sin_n necessary_a that_o thou_o may_v see_v the_o vanity_n of_o the_o creature_n and_o the_o sinfulness_n of_o thy_o nature_n that_o when_o thou_o come_v to_o heaven_n thou_o may_v say_v by_o thy_o own_o experience_n it_o be_v not_o by_o my_o own_o righteousness_n that_o i_o come_v hither_o and_o therefore_o though_o it_o be_v good_a to_o get_v it_o yet_o let_v god_n go_v his_o own_o way_n and_o use_v his_o own_o manner_n of_o work_v whether_o by_o legal_a terror_n or_o otherwise_o what_o he_o see_v good_a for_o thou_o he_o will_v do_v to_o humble_v thou_o but_o do_v thou_o use_v mean_n to_o understand_v the_o law_n thy_o own_o heart_n and_o action_n and_o as_o thou_o be_v fall_v into_o new_a sin_n labour_v to_o see_v what_o a_o case_n thou_o shall_v be_v in_o if_o christ_n have_v not_o deliver_v thou_o but_o let_v not_o thy_o assurance_n be_v weaken_v for_o you_o must_v know_v there_o be_v but_o two_o main_a end_n of_o humiliation_n which_o if_o they_o be_v attain_v in_o thou_o thou_o need_v not_o call_v in_o question_n thy_o estate_n now_o first_o
so_o then_o to_o seek_v god_n face_n contain_v these_o three_o thing_n in_o it_o first_o to_o have_v his_o face_n reveal_v to_o you_o and_o to_o see_v he_o as_o a_o father_n 1_o to_o seek_v he_o as_o sequester_v from_o punishment_n and_o reward_n 2_o to_o seek_v he_o alone_o in_o opposition_n to_o yourselves_o 3_o and_o that_o all_o this_o aught_o to_o be_v do_v we_o will_v give_v you_o one_o reason_n and_o so_o come_v to_o the_o use_n and_o that_o reason_n be_v draw_v from_o the_o holiness_n of_o the_o lord_n isaiah_n 6._o 3._o one_o angel_n cry_v to_o another_o 3._o holy_a holy_a holy_a be_v the_o lord_n of_o host_n the_o whole_a earth_n be_v full_a of_o his_o glory_n this_o 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d be_v the_o proclamation_n of_o angel_n and_o that_o upon_o this_o occasion_n the_o lord_n send_v isaiah_n the_o prophet_n to_o pronounce_v a_o judgement_n to_o his_o people_n and_o that_o a_o great_a one_o the_o rejection_n of_o the_o jew_n and_o at_o the_o same_o time_n the_o angel_n be_v send_v to_o proclaim_v god_n holiness_n now_o holiness_n be_v the_o appropriation_n of_o a_o thing_n to_o the_o lord_n what_o use_v and_o a_o sequestration_n of_o it_o from_o common_a use_n and_o so_o the_o holiness_n of_o god_n himself_o which_o be_v the_o rule_n of_o all_o other_o holiness_n be_v a_o appropriation_n of_o his_o action_n to_o himself_o as_o his_o end_n he_o be_v then_o say_v to_o be_v holy_a when_o he_o do_v thing_n for_o himself_o therefore_o be_v about_o to_o do_v so_o great_a a_o work_n peculiar_o for_o himself_o and_o his_o glory_n as_o when_o he_o will_v destroy_v his_o own_o people_n and_o destroy_v kingdom_n for_o his_o own_o best_a advantage_n and_o end_n the_o glory_n of_o himself_o than_o he_o let_v they_o know_v this_o as_o the_o only_a reason_n because_o he_o be_v holy_a for_o if_o he_o shall_v not_o respect_v himself_o he_o shall_v not_o be_v holy_a so_o rom._n 11._o 33._o 33_o to_o the_o end_n the_o apostle_n have_v speak_v of_o this_o rejection_n here_o prophesy_v conclude_v with_o this_o his_o judgement_n be_v unsearchable_a and_o his_o way_n past_o find_v out_o etc._n etc._n of_o he_o and_o to_o he_o and_o through_o he_o be_v all_o thing_n and_o to_o he_o be_v glory_n for_o ever_o as_o if_o he_o shall_v have_v say_v god_n have_v do_v all_o this_o but_o i_o know_v not_o the_o reason_n of_o it_o nor_o any_o one_o else_o and_o aim_v at_o god_n and_o not_o himself_o the_o nature_n of_o holiness_n be_v express_v in_o two_o thing_n thing_n first_o in_o pureness_n second_o sequestration_n to_o god_n so_o that_o holiness_n purity_n and_o chastity_n be_v much_o alike_o as_o it_o be_v as_o there_o be_v also_o much_o affinity_n purity_n between_o the_o greek_a word_n 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d and_o 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d chastity_n in_o a_o wife_n stand_v in_o keep_v close_o to_o her_o husband_n and_o be_v sequester_v from_o all_o other_o and_o god_n holiness_n consist_v first_o in_o the_o pureness_n of_o his_o nature_n and_o second_o in_o a_o sequestration_n of_o all_o thing_n to_o himself_o sequestration_n now_o our_o holiness_n be_v not_o so_o but_o we_o be_v of_o another_o cause_n we_o must_v do_v to_o do_v any_o thing_n to_o resign_v all_o these_o to_o the_o lord_n and_o by_o this_o he_o sanctify_v the_o lord_n and_o this_o be_v the_o holiness_n of_o a_o man_n to_o do_v all_o for_o the_o lord_n only_o so_o that_o the_o reason_n be_v clear_a let_v a_o man_n do_v what_o he_o will_v keep_v the_o sabbath_n pray_v etc._n etc._n if_o there_o be_v not_o this_o holiness_n in_o his_o heart_n all_o his_o labour_n be_v lose_v as_o you_o all_o grant_n for_o without_o holiness_n no_o man_n shall_v see_v god_n now_o it_o be_v not_o holy_a except_o it_o be_v give_v up_o to_o the_o lord_n alone_o exclude_v himself_o and_o the_o creature_n be_v all_o our_o labour_n lose_v except_o we_o seek_v god_n face_n face_n though_o otherwise_o a_o man_n go_v never_o so_o far_o then_o there_o be_v his_o day_n yet_o if_o he_o fall_v from_o god_n all_o his_o righteousness_n shall_v be_v forget_v and_o such_o a_o man_n as_o seek_v not_o the_o lord_n for_o himself_o will_v fall_v away_o as_o a_o end_n see_v this_o in_o amaziah_n 2_o chron._n 25._o he_o go_v far_o in_o obedience_n but_o 25_o yet_o he_o do_v not_o seek_v the_o lord_n in_o it_o he_o be_v content_a to_o lose_v a_o hundred_o talent_n and_o to_o send_v back_o the_o israelite_n he_o
scandalous_a sin_n but_o the_o first_o rise_v of_o it_o be_v his_o unconscionable_a walk_n with_o god_n in_o secret_a as_o the_o apostle_n paul_n say_v of_o the_o gentile_n rom._n 1._o 20._o to_o 24._o that_o because_o when_o they_o 24._o know_v god_n they_o glorify_v he_o not_o as_o god_n god_n give_v they_o up_o to_o vile_a affection_n so_o psal._n 80._o 11_o 12._o but_o my_o people_n will_v not_o bearken_v and_o israel_n will_v none_o of_o i_o 12._o so_o i_o give_v they_o up_o to_o their_o own_o heart_n lust_n and_o they_o walk_v in_o their_o own_o counsel_n as_o if_o he_o have_v say_v
