therefore_o he_o be_v pray_v for_o more_o but_o he_o forget_v to_o pray_v with_o thanksgiving_n to_o make_v his_o request_n know_v with_o thanksgiving_n now_o let_v a_o humble_a heart_n be_v in_o never_o so_o much_o distress_n and_o misery_n the_o man_n can_v see_v abundance_n of_o cause_n to_o praise_n god_n if_o he_o have_v but_o water_n that_o the_o beast_n drink_v and_o if_o he_o have_v but_o strength_n to_o dig_v he_o can_v say_v lord_z i_o own_o this_o as_o a_o mercy_n and_o whatsoever_o be_v on_o this_o side_n hell_n be_v mercy_n so_o in_o rom._n 12._o 1._o i_o beseech_v you_o by_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n that_o you_o give_v up_o yourselves_o a_o live_a and_o holy_a and_o acceptable_a sacrifice_n to_o god_n he_o will_v have_v the_o mercy_n of_o god_n to_o bring_v they_o to_o obedience_n to_o give_v up_o themselves_o to_o obey_v god_n so_o in_o rom._n 2._o say_v he_o do_v thou_o despise_v his_o riches_n and_o goodness_n and_o forbearance_n and_o long_o suffer_v not_o know_v that_o the_o goodness_n of_o god_n shall_v lead_v thou_o to_o repentance_n the_o goodness_n of_o god_n and_o the_o patience_n of_o god_n and_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n shall_v lead_v all_o humble_a heart_n to_o a_o holy_a thankfulness_n and_o obedience_n and_o so_o it_o do_v and_o the_o more_o the_o lord_n do_v multiply_v mercy_n upon_o he_o the_o more_o obedient_a and_o thankful_a he_o be_v now_o in_o all_o this_o that_o i_o have_v say_v i_o will_v desire_v you_o to_o examine_v your_o soul_n and_o if_o you_o find_v that_o in_o any_o of_o these_o or_o in_o any_o of_o the_o rest_n that_o i_o be_o yet_o to_o speak_v of_o you_o be_v faulty_a and_o come_v short_a yet_o i_o will_v not_o have_v you_o conclude_v therefore_o i_o be_o not_o the_o humble_a soul_n that_o the_o minister_n speak_v off_o there_o be_v none_o of_o this_o grace_n in_o i_o for_o though_o it_o be_v not_o so_o with_o thou_o in_o every_o point_n though_o thou_o come_v short_a of_o perfect_a humiliation_n that_o shall_v be_v in_o thou_o it_o follow_v not_o that_o therefore_o there_o be_v none_o at_o all_o the_o end_n why_o i_o put_v these_o thing_n before_o you_o be_v not_o so_o much_o to_o try_v yourselves_o as_o that_o you_o may_v labour_v with_o the_o lord_n to_o bring_v up_o your_o heart_n to_o these_o thing_n and_o i_o have_v the_o rather_o choose_v to_o speak_v of_o this_o at_o this_o time_n because_o i_o think_v the_o lord_n be_v prepare_v to_o come_v towards_o we_o in_o a_o way_n of_o mercy_n and_o that_o i_o will_v have_v you_o to_o think_v of_o and_o pray_v for_o that_o the_o lord_n may_v still_o come_v in_o a_o way_n of_o mercy_n that_o he_o may_v turn_v from_o the_o evil_n he_o have_v intend_v or_o else_o he_o may_v easy_o bring_v we_o again_o to_o the_o red_a sea_n if_o we_o provoke_v he_o as_o we_o have_v do_v but_o so_o much_o for_o this_o time_n sermon_n 8._o isaiah_n 6._o 5._o for_o my_o eye_n have_v see_v the_o king_n the_o lord_n of_o host_n i_o hope_v you_o be_v not_o weary_a of_o this_o subject_n though_o i_o have_v be_v something_o long_o upon_o it_o you_o may_v remember_v the_o last_o doctrine_n be_v that_o a_o save_a sight_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n be_v the_o principal_a mean_n of_o true_a humiliation_n it_o be_v the_o principal_a mean_n to_o humble_a the_o heart_n of_o any_o man_n whether_o he_o be_v a_o saint_n or_o a_o sinner_n i_o have_v speak_v much_o to_o you_o concern_v that_o sight_n at_o the_o last_o we_o come_v to_o this_o to_o examyne_n whether_o we_o have_v see_v god_n or_o no._n john_n put_v much_o stress_n upon_o that_o word_n if_o any_o man_n love_v not_o his_o brother_n he_o have_v not_o see_v god_n i_o say_v if_o you_o have_v see_v god_n in_o christ_n as_o moses_n have_v see_v he_o and_o as_o all_o the_o saint_n see_v he_o with_o open_a face_n it_o will_v appear_v by_o this_o it_o will_v make_v your_o heart_n humble_a it_o will_v work_v a_o holy_a frame_n of_o humiliation_n no_o proud_a man_n have_v ever_o see_v god_n no_o man_n have_v ever_o see_v god_n but_o his_o heart_n be_v thorough_o humble_v but_o that_o beget_v another_o question_n how_o shall_v i_o know_v whether_o i_o have_v a_o humble_a heart_n or_o no_o i_o tell_v you_o you_o may_v know_v it_o first_o by_o the_o carriage_n of_o your_o soul_n towards_o god_n in_o point_n of_o justification_n in_o regard_n of_o his_o command_n in_o regard_n of_o his_o truth_n in_o regard_n of_o his_o correction_n in_o regard_n of_o his_o mercy_n and_o this_o last_o be_v the_o thing_n i_o do_v endeavour_v to_o open_a to_o you_o the_o last_o day_n second_o you_o may_v know_v whether_o your_o heart_n man_n 2._o true_a humiliation_n know_v by_o our_o carriage_n towards_o man_n be_v true_o humble_v by_o your_o carriage_n towards_o man_n when_o ever_o man_n be_v convert_v to_o god_n there_o the_o heart_n of_o the_o child_n be_v turn_v to_o their_o father_n now_o among_o man_n there_o be_v two_o sort_n in_o general_a they_o be_v either_o sinner_n or_o saint_n i_o shall_v leave_v to_o speak_v of_o our_o carriage_n towards_o saint_n for_o the_o last_o because_o it_o will_v require_v a_o little_a more_o time_n and_o because_o i_o shall_v speak_v but_o a_o few_o word_n of_o this_o of_o the_o carriage_n of_o a_o humble_a heart_n towards_o sinner_n and_o that_o i_o shall_v endeavour_v to_o show_v you_o at_o this_o time_n therefore_o brief_o whosoever_o have_v this_o humble_a frame_n of_o heart_n his_o carriage_n towards_o sinner_n be_v according_a to_o the_o rule_n that_o we_o meekness_n 1._o to_o sinner_n with_o meekness_n read_v of_o titus_n 3._o 2._o to_o speak_v evil_a of_o no_o man_n to_o be_v gentle_a show_v all_o meekness_n unto_o all_o man_n his_o carriage_n i_o say_v be_v meek_a and_o affable_a and_o courteous_a and_o gentle_a towards_o all_o man_n indeed_o there_o be_v no_o heart_n in_o the_o world_n so_o proud_a you_o shall_v observe_v it_o but_o it_o have_v in_o it_o some_o meekness_n and_o especial_o to_o some_o man_n the_o proud_a tyrant_n in_o the_o world_n have_v have_v some_o favourite_n that_o they_o do_v fawn_v on_o and_o in_o some_o sort_n may_v be_v term_v meek_a man_n but_o the_o apostle_n say_v that_o we_o must_v show_v all_o meekness_n and_o that_o unto_o all_o man_n to_o all_o sort_n of_o man_n to_o whoremonger_n to_o drunkard_n to_o those_o that_o deprive_v we_o of_o our_o good_n and_o of_o our_o good_a name_n which_o be_v hard_o to_o do_v but_o i_o will_v give_v you_o a_o scripture_n that_o will_v open_v it_o collos_n 1._o 9_o i_o pray_v for_o you_o say_v paul_n that_o you_o may_v be_v fill_v with_o the_o knowledge_n of_o his_o will_n in_o all_o wisdom_n and_o spiritual_a understanding_n etc._n etc._n if_o the_o lord_n have_v reveal_v himself_o that_o thou_o have_v have_v a_o save_a sight_n of_o he_o than_o the_o lord_n humble_v thy_o heart_n how_o will_v that_o appear_v by_o thy_o carriage_n to_o all_o man_n there_o will_v be_v all_o meekness_n to_o all_o man_n it_o will_v appear_v by_o thy_o affability_n for_o meekness_n and_o humbleness_n have_v the_o same_o name_n in_o the_o original_a moses_n be_v a_o humble_a man_n and_o moses_n be_v a_o very_a meek_a man_n where_o ever_o there_o be_v a_o humble_a heart_n it_o be_v a_o meek_a heart_n there_o will_v be_v meekness_n show_v even_o to_o sinner_n that_o you_o may_v see_v this_o i_o will_v give_v you_o but_o one_o solid_a instance_n instead_o of_o many_o you_o know_v that_o of_o all_o proud_a man_n there_o be_v none_o that_o have_v the_o name_n so_o much_o as_o the_o pharisee_n therefore_o they_o be_v call_v the_o proud_a pharisee_n and_o of_o all_o that_o have_v sinner_n christ_n meekness_n to_o sinner_n be_v humble_v there_o be_v not_o such_o a_o pattern_n of_o humility_n as_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n now_o you_o shall_v see_v how_o the_o pride_n of_o the_o pharisee_n be_v express_v and_o how_o the_o humility_n of_o our_o saviour_n be_v set_v forth_o by_o his_o carriage_n to_o sinner_n as_o he_o say_v mat._n 11._o 28._o come_v and_o learn_v of_o i_o for_o i_o be_o meek_a and_o lowly_a of_o heart_n it_o be_v because_o of_o the_o pride_n of_o our_o heart_n that_o we_o be_v not_o meek_a you_o shall_v see_v this_o meekness_n of_o christ_n by_o parallel_n place_n in_o luke_n 7._o 34._o you_o shall_v find_v there_o that_o our_o lord_n christ_n be_v at_o a_o feast_n when_o he_o sit_v at_o meat_n in_o a_o pharise_n house_n there_o come_v in_o a_o woman_n and_o she_o be_v wash_v his_o foot_n and_o wipe_v they_o with_o the_o hair_n of_o her_o head_n as_o he_o sit_v at_o the_o table_n the_o pharisee_n fall_v a_o reason_n with_o themselves_o
isaiah_n write_v be_v gospel_n he_o be_v a_o evangelicall_n prophet_n and_o in_o that_o description_n there_o be_v these_o thing_n first_o the_o occasion_n of_o this_o great_a humiliation_n they_o god_n humble_v his_o minister_n ere_o he_o send_v they_o of_o the_o prophet_n and_o that_o be_v that_o god_n be_v now_o set_v he_o forth_o in_o the_o gospel_n to_o preach_v the_o will_n of_o god_n to_o the_o people_n god_n when_o he_o send_v minister_n to_o his_o work_n he_o do_v first_o humble_v they_o they_o can_v never_o do_v any_o thing_n to_o purpose_n for_o god_n till_o they_o be_v undo_v woe_n be_v i_o i_o be_o undo_v say_v the_o prophet_n in_o this_o verse_n and_o then_o in_o the_o verse_n follow_v god_n send_v he_o to_o preach_v so_o that_o the_o main_a cause_n why_o you_o have_v not_o minister_n according_a to_o god_n that_o he_o do_v not_o bless_v their_o work_n according_a to_o your_o heart_n and_o desire_n it_o be_v not_o for_o want_v of_o part_n or_o understanding_n or_o for_o want_n of_o part_n or_o degree_n or_o the_o like_a but_o the_o general_a the_o main_a cause_n be_v because_o they_o be_v not_o humble_v god_n have_v not_o undo_v they_o second_o there_o be_v the_o humiliation_n itself_o which_o consist_v first_o of_o a_o act_n of_o the_o understanding_n whereby_o the_o prophet_n see_v some_o thing_n more_o than_o he_o know_v before_o and_o cry_v out_o i_o be_o undo_v he_o think_v he_o be_v in_o a_o good_a condition_n before_o but_o now_o he_o do_v not_o mere_o say_v i_o be_o undo_v but_o woe_n be_v i_o woe_n be_v i_o i_o be_o undo_v three_o there_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o it_o and_o the_o cause_n be_v twofold_a one_o be_v material_a as_o you_o call_v it_o that_o be_v sin_n woe_n be_v i_o i_o be_o undo_v why_o because_o i_o be_o a_o man_n say_v see_v they_o now_o the_o least_o sin_n be_v exceed_o sinful_a even_o to_o dwell_v among_o wicked_a people_n a_o man_n can_v choose_v but_o be_v taint_v with_o they_o therefore_o woe_n be_v i_o i_o they_o will_v never_o be_v humble_v they_o will_v never_o be_v undo_v in_o this_o sense_n but_o there_o be_v this_o thing_n to_o make_v it_o up_o my_o eye_n have_v see_v the_o king_n the_o lord_n of_o host_n as_o we_o see_v in_o the_o verse_n before_o in_o the_o vision_n how_o he_o have_v see_v the_o lord_n so_o now_o we_o come_v to_o these_o word_n for_o my_o eye_n have_v see_v the_o king_n the_o lord_n of_o host_n from_o which_o word_n you_o be_v to_o observe_v two_o thing_n the_o first_o be_v this_o that_o it_o be_v the_o peculiar_a privilege_n of_o the_o saint_n and_o ever_o be_v and_o ever_o will_v be_v to_o see_v god_n to_o see_v the_o king_n the_o lord_n of_o host_n second_o that_o a_o true_a save_a sight_n of_o the_o lord_n of_o host_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n jesus_n be_v that_o principal_o that_o undo_v man_n or_o true_o and_o save_o humble_v man_n i_o shall_v speak_v more_o particular_o of_o the_o latter_a but_o we_o can_v well_o understand_v the_o latter_a without_o we_o have_v a_o little_a understanding_n in_o the_o former_a for_o if_o you_o will_v know_v how_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n humble_v man_n you_o must_v understand_v a_o little_a what_o this_o sight_n what_o this_o see_v of_o god_n be_v i_o shall_v speak_v brief_o of_o the_o former_a lesson_n which_o be_v this_o that_o god_n doct._n 1._o the_o peculiar_a privilege_n of_o the_o saint_n to_o see_v god_n it_o be_v a_o peculiar_a privilege_n of_o a_o saint_n and_o ever_o be_v and_o ever_o will_v he_o to_o see_v god_n to_o see_v the_o king_n of_o glory_n the_o lord_n of_o host_n we_o do_v not_o now_o speak_v of_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n that_o we_o call_v the_o beatifical_a vision_n that_o sight_n of_o god_n we_o shall_v have_v in_o heaven_n for_o every_o one_o of_o you_o know_v that_o wicked_a man_n shall_v never_o see_v god_n that_o way_n but_o i_o say_v there_o be_v a_o sight_n of_o god_n in_o this_o world_n that_o every_o world_n a_o sight_n of_o god_n in_o this_o world_n saint_n in_o all_o age_n have_v have_v and_o no_o other_o son_n or_o daughter_n of_o man_n from_o the_o begin_n to_o the_o end_n ever_o have_v or_o shall_v have_v but_o those_o that_o be_v real_a s_n it_o be_v concern_v this_o sight_n or_o see_v of_o god_n we_o mean_v to_o speak_v if_o god_n will_v and_o that_o you_o may_v understand_v it_o you_o must_v corporeal_o man_n be_v say_v to_o see_v god_n 〈◊〉_d 1_o corporeal_o know_v that_o there_o be_v divers_a sort_n of_o sight_n of_o god_n man_n be_v say_v many_o way_n to_o see_v god_n as_o first_o there_o be_v a_o corporeal_a sight_n a_o bodily_a sight_n of_o god_n a_o see_v of_o god_n with_o bodily_a eye_n and_o so_o the_o scripture_n do_v often_o speak_v negative_o that_o no_o man_n have_v see_v god_n at_o any_o time_n that_o way_n no_o man_n have_v see_v his_o shape_n that_o be_v no_o man_n in_o this_o world_n with_o bodily_a eye_n do_v ever_o see_v god_n as_o though_o he_o be_v a_o body_n or_o a_o corporeal_a substance_n indeed_o man_n have_v see_v jesus_n christ_n who_o be_v god_n and_o christ_n jesus_n say_v joh._n 6_o 36._o you_o have_v see_v i_o and_o hear_v i_o and_o yet_o you_o believe_v not_o in_o i_o so_o that_o the_o pharisee_n the_o proud_a pharisee_n that_o never_o be_v humble_v see_v jesus_n christ_n that_o be_v god_n but_o yet_o that_o be_v not_o the_o sight_n here_o speak_v of_o that_o peculiar_a sight_n which_o none_o but_o saint_n have_v for_o the_o former_a no_o man_n ever_o have_v and_o the_o latter_a wicked_a man_n have_v as_o well_o as_o good_a that_o be_v wicked_a man_n see_v christ_n bodily_a as_o well_o as_o good_a man_n second_o there_o be_v a_o other_o sight_n of_o god_n that_o be_v we_o providence_n 2._o in_o work_n of_o creation_n or_o providence_n may_v be_v say_v to_o see_v god_n in_o his_o work_n of_o creation_n or_o providence_n or_o rather_o to_o speak_v more_o proper_o we_o see_v the_o thing_n of_o god_n as_o the_o apostle_n say_v rom._n 1._o they_o see_v the_o invisible_a thing_n of_o god_n in_o the_o thing_n that_o be_v make_v that_o be_v a_o natural_a man_n may_v see_v a_o great_a power_n in_o that_o finger_n which_o make_v the_o moon_n and_o great_a wisdom_n in_o he_o that_o contrive_v the_o sun_n moon_n star_n and_o all_o creature_n from_o the_o beginning_n now_o i_o say_v this_o may_v be_v say_v to_o be_v a_o see_v or_o a_o know_n of_o god_n for_o in_o rom._n 1._o as_o it_o be_v say_v in_o one_o place_n they_o see_v the_o invisible_a thing_n of_o god_n so_o afterward_o it_o be_v say_v they_o know_v god_n who_o because_o they_o know_v god_n and_o glorify_v he_o not_o as_o god_n god_n give_v they_o up_o etc._n etc._n there_o be_v some_o thing_n some_o fashion_n that_o they_o do_v see_v god_n in_o the_o creation_n in_o the_o creature_n but_o this_o sight_n of_o god_n be_v not_o that_o i_o mean_v to_o speak_v of_o that_o glorious_a and_o bless_a sight_n of_o which_o christ_n speak_v math._n 5._o bless_a be_v the_o pure_a in_o heart_n for_o they_o shall_v see_v god_n three_o beside_o the_o corporeal_a see_v and_o the_o natural_a illumination_n 3._o by_o common_a illumination_n see_v there_o be_v a_o sight_n of_o god_n by_o the_o illumination_n of_o god_n spirit_n i_o say_v god_n spirit_n may_v raise_v a_o man_n up_o to_o see_v thing_n which_o no_o man_n natural_o ever_o do_v or_o can_v yet_o it_o be_v not_o this_o sight_n now_o indeed_o that_o more_o proper_o as_o i_o say_v of_o the_o former_a be_v to_o see_v the_o thing_n of_o god_n only_o the_o former_a be_v a_o see_v of_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n in_o the_o creature_n and_o this_o be_v a_o see_v the_o thing_n of_o god_n in_o the_o gospel_n so_o in_o heb._n 6._o 6._o where_o mention_n be_v make_v of_o hypocrite_n that_o fall_v away_o
read_v one_o single_a scripture_n it_o may_v be_v i_o have_v a_o book_n that_o will_v point_v out_o half_a a_o dozen_o scripture_n to_o open_v one_o scripture_n by_o and_o it_o may_v be_v i_o have_v some_o book_n that_o take_v soul_n 3._o to_o press_v scripture_n on_o the_o soul_n some_o scripture_n and_o press_v it_o upon_o my_o soul_n as_o doctor_n preston_n and_o other_o godly_a book_n but_o to_o take_v book_n and_o say_v i_o think_v this_o and_o austin_n that_o and_o fill_v our_o head_n with_o notion_n they_o blind_v we_o that_o we_o can_v see_v the_o will_n of_o god_n therefore_o in_o respect_n of_o age_n when_o we_o be_v child_n and_o young_a we_o use_v not_o spectacle_n it_o may_v be_v at_o twenty_o or_o thirty_o or_o forty_o year_n old_a we_o can_v read_v without_o spectacle_n but_o when_o we_o come_v to_o fifty_o or_o sixty_o than_o we_o can_v see_v nothing_o but_o through_o spectacle_n it_o shall_v be_v just_a contrary_n with_o we_o when_o we_o be_v christian_n when_o we_o be_v young_a we_o usual_o never_o read_v the_o word_n of_o god_n but_o through_o the_o spectacle_n of_o man_n gloss_n but_o when_o we_o be_v old_a christian_n and_o strong_a saint_n we_o shall_v learn_v to_o read_v better_o without_o spectacle_n we_o shall_v daily_o make_v less_o use_n of_o man_n book_n and_o more_o of_o god_n book_n that_o whereas_o before_o a_o man_n turn_v over_o twenty_o author_n upon_o a_o point_n now_o he_o can_v go_v humble_o to_o god_n with_o his_o bible_n and_o without_o spectacle_n he_o can_v see_v what_o the_o will_n of_o god_n be_v therefore_o lay_v aside_o spectacle_n sometime_o and_o only_o take_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n and_o compare_v scripture_n with_o scripture_n that_o you_o may_v come_v to_o know_v the_o mind_n of_o christ_n shall_v i_o name_v one_o thing_n more_o if_o you_o will_v again_o 5._o to_o be_v bear_v again_o come_v to_o be_v spiritual_a gospel-saint_n you_o must_v be_v bear_v again_o you_o must_v be_v bear_v from_o above_o a_o gospell-profession_n be_v jerusalem_n from_o above_o and_o there_o be_v none_o that_o can_v come_v into_o jerusalem_n that_o be_v from_o above_o but_o those_o that_o be_v bear_v from_o above_o therefore_o mark_v our_o saviour_n reason_v john_n 3_o nicodemus_n ask_v christ_n which_o be_v the_o way_n to_o heaven_n and_o he_o tell_v he_o very_o thou_o must_v be_v bear_v again_o or_o thou_o must_v be_v bear_v from_o above_o or_o else_o thou_o can_v not_o see_v it_o nichodemus_n wonder_v why_o he_o must_v be_v bear_v from_o above_o say_v he_o shall_v i_o go_v into_o my_o mother_n belly_n etc._n etc._n say_v christ_n marvel_v not_o wonder_v not_o why_o shall_v he_o not_o wonder_v at_o such_o a_o strange_a speech_n here_o be_v the_o reason_n that_o which_o be_v bear_v of_o flesh_n be_v flesh_n therefore_o think_v it_o not_o strange_a that_o i_o say_v thou_o must_v be_v bear_v again_o so_o i_o say_v whatsoever_o you_o do_v by_o the_o power_n of_o nature_n by_o your_o own_o wisdom_n
