18._o that_o we_o be_v not_o come_v to_o this_o mount_n which_o smoke_v that_o we_o be_v not_o come_v to_o sinai_n to_o see_v the_o brune_a fire_n which_o may_v astonnish_v we_o to_o see_v the_o lightning_n and_o all_o those_o other_o thing_n which_o be_v to_o amaze_v and_o confound_v the_o people_n but_o that_o we_o hear_v a_o sweet_a and_o pleasant_a melody_n by_o the_o which_o we_o be_v accompany_v of_o the_o angel_n of_o heaven_n with_o the_o soul_n of_o the_o holy_a patriarch_n and_o of_o the_o father_n which_o live_v in_o the_o hope_n of_o eternal_a life_n although_o they_o have_v yet_o nothing_o but_o obscure_a shadow_n that_o god_n now_o couple_v &_o join_v we_o with_o they_o which_o in_o old_a time_n have_v wait_v for_o the_o come_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n see_v it_o be_v so_o we_o must_v not_o draw_v back_o but_o every_o one_o must_v set_v himself_o forward_o to_o come_v with_o a_o bold_a courage_n to_o hear_v our_o god_o forasmuch_o as_o he_o speak_v so_o gentle_o and_o love_o unto_o we_o and_o use_v so_o fatherly_a a_o speech_n as_o which_o serve_v not_o to_o fear_v and_o amaze_v his_o child_n but_o sweet_o to_o entice_v they_o and_o to_o win_v their_o heart_n unto_o he_o this_o difference_n therefore_o be_v worthy_a to_o be_v note_v that_o in_o comparison_n of_o the_o law_n the_o gospel_n may_v seem_v sweet_a and_o amiable_a unto_o we_o but_o for_o all_o this_o we_o must_v return_v to_o this_o general_a principle_n namely_o that_o it_o be_v much_o better_a that_o the_o word_n of_o god_o be_v preach_v unto_o we_o by_o the_o mouth_n of_o man_n than_o if_o god_o himself_o shall_v thunder_v from_o heaven_n and_o why_o for_o hear_v we_o only_o this_o natural_a thunder_n and_o behold_v we_o be_v take_v with_o a_o great_a astonishment_n and_o yet_o here_o be_v nothing_o express_v god_n only_o make_v a_o noise_n with_o a_o confuse_a and_o unperfect_a sound_n what_o shall_v be_v then_o when_o he_o shall_v speak_v unto_o we_o and_o when_o he_o shall_v show_v we_o his_o glory_n we_o can_v not_o look_v on_o the_o sun_n which_o his_o a_o corruptible_a creature_n and_o how_o then_o shall_v we_o be_v able_a to_o behold_v the_o majesty_n of_o god_o if_o it_o be_v full_o show_v we_o and_o in_o his_o perfection_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v say_v that_o a_o mortal_a creature_n can_v not_o see_v god_o and_o live_v can_v not_o behold_v his_o glory_n and_o not_o be_v utter_o confound_v i_o grant_v that_o god_o appear_v unto_o moses_n and_o that_o not_o in_o such_o sort_n only_o as_o to_o other_o of_o the_o prophet_n as_o it_o be_v say_v in_o the_o book_n of_o number_n that_o he_o give_v he_o this_o special_a privilege_n 8._o to_o be_v see_v of_o he_o face_n to_o face_n even_o plain_o as_o of_o his_o friend_n that_o he_o appear_v not_o unto_o he_o either_o by_o dream_n or_o by_o vision_n only_o but_o after_o such_o a_o especial_a manner_n that_o moses_n seem_v to_o be_v exempt_v from_o the_o company_n of_o man_n to_o be_v make_v more_o familiar_a unto_o god_n but_o what_o ever_o be_v say_v hereof_o yet_o god_n manifest_v himself_o unto_o he_o in_o portion_n and_o measure_n for_o if_o he_o have_v show_v he_o his_o infinite_a be_v moses_n must_v have_v needs_o what_o grace_n soever_o he_o have_v receive_v of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n be_v overwhelm_v therewith_o and_o utter_o confound_v yea_o when_o at_o one_o time_n be_v yet_o among_o the_o live_n god_o show_v he_o his_o glory_n in_o more_o ample_a and_o plain_a manner_n than_o ever_o he_o have_v do_v yet_o see_v he_o he_o not_o but_o as_o it_o be_v by_o the_o back_n and_o hinder_v part_n in_o this_o similitude_n it_o be_v declare_v unto_o we_o 2d_o that_o as_o in_o behold_v a_o man_n in_o the_o back_n we_o have_v not_o the_o plain_a sight_n of_o he_o for_o the_o plain_a sight_n of_o a_o man_n and_o the_o principal_a view_n be_v in_o the_o face_n so_o albeit_o moses_n have_v a_o especial_a familiarity_n with_o god_o yet_o this_o notwithstanding_o in_o this_o sovereign_a and_o principal_a vision_n which_o be_v give_v he_o in_o the_o mount_n then_o when_o he_o be_v separate_v from_o the_o condition_n of_o this_o mortal_a and_o transitory_a life_n when_o he_o be_v as_o a_o angel_n of_o heaven_n yet_o he_o see_v god_o but_o in_o part_n as_o when_o we_o see_v a_o man_n by_o the_o back_n so_o let_v we_o learn_v to_o content_v ourselves_o when_o god_o use_v this_o order_n towards_o we_o namely_o that_o his_o word_n be_v preach_v unto_o we_o by_o man_n and_o let_v we_o so_o receive_v it_o at_o their_o mouth_n as_o if_o we_o see_v his_o majesty_n face_n to_o face_n for_o it_o be_v profitable_a for_o we_o to_o have_v pastor_n which_o be_v appoint_v for_o minister_n of_o the_o word_n forasmuch_o as_o we_o can_v but_o perish_v and_o be_v bring_v to_o nothing_o by_o the_o appearance_n of_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n if_o it_o shall_v be_v manifest_v unto_o we_o and_o to_o the_o end_n that_o none_o may_v take_v any_o occasion_n to_o complain_v as_o if_o the_o word_n of_o god_o be_v not_o sufficient_o approve_v and_o that_o man_n may_v not_o doubt_v whether_o they_o ought_v to_o hold_v themselves_o unto_o it_o or_o no_o in_o publish_v his_o law_n he_o show_v himself_o and_o we_o have_v here_o the_o testimony_n of_o the_o people_n which_o say_v it_o be_v the_o lord_n he_o have_v make_v we_o this_o day_n to_o feel_v his_o glory_n and_o greatness_n we_o have_v see_v that_o it_o be_v he_o which_o speak_v he_o have_v interpose_v none_o to_o be_v his_o spokesman_n unto_o we_o but_o we_o have_v hear_v his_o voice_n with_o our_o ear_n this_o then_o have_v be_v do_v for_o once_o withal_o let_v we_o take_v this_o which_o be_v here_o recite_v for_o a_o testimony_n and_o witness_n that_o moses_n speak_v not_o of_o himself_o that_o he_o have_v not_o forge_v and_o devise_v of_o his_o own_o brain_n the_o doctrine_n we_o hold_v of_o he_o but_o that_o he_o have_v be_v a_o faithful_a steward_n of_o god_o who_o advowed_a and_o approve_a he_o and_o not_o only_o ratify_v and_o confirm_v by_o miracle_n this_o which_o moses_n teach_v but_o in_o his_o own_o person_n declare_v that_o it_o be_v he_o who_o be_v the_o author_n of_o all_o this_o doctrine_n now_o forasmuch_o as_o by_o great_a reason_n the_o gospel_n shall_v be_v as_o authentic_a and_o aswell_o authorize_v as_o the_o law_n we_o have_v have_v also_o a_o witness_n from_o heaven_n that_o this_o be_v no_o humane_a doctrine_n but_o that_o it_o proceed_v from_o god_n and_o this_o be_v that_o which_o s._n peter_n touch_v in_o his_o second_o canonical_a epistle_n 18._o say_v that_o he_o and_o his_o companion_n hear_v the_o voice_n from_o heaven_n by_o the_o which_o the_o father_n declare_v his_o son_n to_o be_v the_o sovereign_a master_n and_o doctor_n of_o his_o whole_a church_n behold_v my_o well-beloved_a son_n hear_v he_o therefore_o when_o this_o voice_n thunder_v from_o heaven_n god_o declare_v that_o we_o ought_v not_o to_o every_o one_o desire_v to_o be_v at_o his_o ease_n and_o in_o prosperity_n we_o need_v not_o to_o be_v teach_v to_o wish_v this_o unto_o ourselves_o for_o our_o nature_n lead_v we_o hereunto_o but_o for_o all_o this_o it_o seem_v that_o we_o have_v conspire_v our_o own_o misery_n and_o wretchedness_n for_o the_o mean_a to_o prosper_v be_v this_o that_o we_o be_v obedient_a unto_o god_n and_o then_o he_o shall_v bless_v we_o in_o such_o for_o that_o we_o shall_v feel_v the_o fruit_n thereof_o in_o all_o thing_n but_o what_o we_o will_v not_o yield_v he_o the_o obedience_n which_o be_v due_a unto_o he_o and_o therefore_o we_o must_v needs_o be_v deprive_v of_o his_o blessing_n he_o must_v needs_o reject_v and_o refuse_v we_o as_o if_o we_o be_v not_o worthy_a to_o be_v in_o the_o number_n of_o his_o creature_n and_o so_o let_v we_o note_v that_o god_n will_v in_o this_o place_n reprove_v man_n and_o show_v they_o that_o they_o be_v themselves_o the_o cause_n of_o all_o the_o misery_n and_o wretchedness_n they_o suffer_v in_o this_o world_n and_o that_o they_o must_v attribute_v it_o to_o their_o sin_n and_o wickedness_n but_o he_o will_v moreover_o withal_o allure_v his_o unto_o himself_o when_o he_o set_v before_o they_o a_o reward_n as_o if_o he_o say_v go_v to_o there_o be_v great_a cause_n why_o i_o shall_v be_v serve_v of_o you_o i_o deserve_v it_o full_a well_o at_o your_o hand_n though_o you_o have_v small_a regard_n of_o i_o for_o see_v that_o you_o be_v my_o creature_n be_v it_o not_o good_a reason_n that_o you_o be_v my_o subject_n and_o render_v all_o obedience_n unto_o i_o aught_v you_o not_o for_o the_o whole_a time_n of_o your_o life_n to_o be_v give_v over_o unto_o i_o but_o yet_o i_o will_v not_o request_v you_o to_o serve_v i_o for_o gramercy_o i_o will_v for_o bear_v my_o own_o right_n in_o this_o behalf_n so_o that_o whereas_o you_o be_v bind_v to_o do_v all_o that_o i_o command_v you_o without_o look_v or_o hope_v for_o any_o that_o he_o will_v in_o most_o love_a and_o amiable_a wise_a win_v his_o unto_o himself_o that_o he_o will_v as_o it_o be_v break_v their_o heart_n that_o they_o may_v be_v the_o better_a affectionate_a &_o more_o willing_o dispose_v to_o serve_v and_o please_v he_o see_v that_o he_o come_v not_o unto_o they_o with_o such_o rigour_n and_o severity_n as_o he_o may_v but_o yield_v of_o the_o right_n which_o appertain_v unto_o he_o choose_v rather_o to_o execute_v the_o office_n of_o a_o father_n say_v that_o if_o we_o will_v be_v his_o child_n he_o will_v be_v a_o liberal_a and_o bountiful_a father_n towards_o we_o and_o albeit_o he_o owe_v we_o nothing_o of_o duty_n yet_o will_v he_o bestow_v a_o reward_n on_o we_o for_o the_o service_n which_o we_o shall_v have_v do_v he_o now_o hereby_o we_o be_v admonish_v that_o it_o please_v god_o by_o so_o great_a gentleness_n and_o liberality_n to_o allure_v and_o win_v we_o unto_o himself_o but_o we_o must_v not_o hereupon_o infer_v that_o man_n may_v merit_v and_o deserve_v any_o thing_n by_o serve_v of_o god_n as_o the_o papist_n when_o they_o hear_v such_o place_n they_o run_v to_o their_o merit_n and_o it_o seem_v unto_o they_o that_o god_o be_v further_o bind_v and_o behold_v unto_o they_o than_o he_o have_v promise_v but_o god_n contrariwise_o mean_v to_o show_v we_o that_o he_o be_v ready_a to_o apply_v himself_o to_o we_o and_o to_o the_o fashion_n of_o man_n that_o he_o desire_v nothing_o else_o but_o to_o win_v we_o by_o all_o gentleness_n unto_o his_o obedience_n and_o this_o be_v not_o for_o any_o profit_n that_o he_o receive_v thereby_o as_o in_o very_a deed_n what_o profit_n shall_v he_o receive_v when_o we_o shall_v have_v accomplish_v his_o whole_a law_n be_v this_o any_o way_n to_o his_o gain_n and_o advantage_n no._n but_o it_o make_v for_o our_o salvation_n you_o see_v then_o what_o the_o intent_n and_o purpose_n of_o god_n be_v &_o what_o we_o have_v to_o note_v upon_o this_o sentence_n so_o let_v we_o learn_v that_o when_o we_o shall_v have_v obey_v our_o god_n if_o he_o make_v we_o to_o prosper_v that_o this_o be_v not_o for_o that_o he_o owe_v we_o any_o thing_n and_o that_o we_o have_v deserve_v it_o and_o that_o we_o may_v vaunt_v that_o he_o give_v we_o no_o more_o than_o we_o deserve_v but_o it_o please_v he_o to_o display_v and_o lay_v open_a his_o bountiful_a goodness_n towards_o we_o even_o to_o call_v that_o a_o reward_n and_o recompense_n which_o he_o of_o his_o mere_a and_o free_a liberality_n give_v we_o without_o be_v therefore_o bind_v and_o indebt_v unto_o we_o moreover_o when_o he_o chastise_v we_o and_o that_o we_o be_v subject_a to_o so_o many_o misery_n let_v we_o know_v that_o we_o do_v but_o gather_v in_o the_o fruit_n of_o our_o own_o seed_n because_o we_o have_v lead_v a_o evil_a life_n our_o lord_n must_v needs_o show_v some_o sign_n and_o take_v of_o his_o anger_n that_o it_o may_v be_v know_v he_o be_v judge_n of_o the_o world_n but_o he_o have_v also_o as_o well_o a_o regard_n unto_o our_o profit_n that_o be_v that_o we_o may_v be_v sorry_a for_o our_o fault_n and_o be_v in_o displeasure_n with_o ourselves_o for_o they_o and_o that_o we_o shall_v have_v our_o recourse_n unto_o he_o in_o true_a and_o unfeigned_a repentance_n loe_o how_o god_o when_o he_o show_v his_o anger_n towards_o we_o cease_v not_o to_o declare_v his_o love_n for_o he_o seek_v to_o win_v we_o unto_o himself_o he_o see_v that_o we_o be_v bring_v asleep_a in_o our_o sin_n and_o he_o awake_v we_o know_v that_o it_o be_v expedient_a and_o necessary_a that_o he_o shall_v so_o do_v thus_o we_o see_v what_o we_o have_v to_o note_v upon_o this_o place_n now_o in_o the_o end_n moses_n speak_v of_o the_o land_n they_o be_v to_o possess_v and_o say_v that_o thou_o may_v prosper_v in_o the_o land_n which_o i_o shall_v give_v thou_o and_o again_o for_o the_o second_o time_n he_o place_v this_o sentence_n that_o it_o may_v be_v well_o with_o you_o in_o the_o land_n which_o you_o shall_v possess_v now_o it_o seem_v at_o the_o first_o sight_n that_o god_n promise_v no_o other_o reward_n than_o in_o this_o earthly_a and_o transitory_a life_n if_o it_o be_v so_o the_o hope_n of_o the_o people_n of_o israel_n have_v be_v clean_o beat_v down_o but_o let_v we_o note_v that_o our_o lord_n have_v use_v towards_o this_o people_n a_o other_o mean_a than_o with_o we_o albeit_o it_o tend_v to_o the_o same_o end_n for_o the_o sacrifice_n which_o be_v ordain_v in_o the_o law_n be_v not_o to_o withdraw_v the_o people_n from_o the_o salvation_n which_o we_o have_v in_o jesus_n christ_n 22._o but_o they_o serve_v rather_o that_o god_o may_v signify_v that_o man_n be_v condemn_v that_o they_o have_v no_o other_o mean_a to_o be_v reconcile_v unto_o he_o than_o this_o which_o they_o have_v by_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n now_o for_o all_o this_o man_n cease_v not_o to_o kill_v brute_n beast_n for_o their_o promise_v not_o the_o land_n to_o abraham_n therein_o to_o rest_v himself_o but_o he_o will_v that_o abraham_n put_v his_o whole_a trust_n and_o affiance_n in_o he_o that_o he_o raise_v and_o lift_v up_o his_o hope_n above_o all_o the_o world_n &_o that_o he_o wait_v for_o everlasting_a life_n for_o himself_o and_o for_o his_o whole_a race_n but_o it_o be_v expedient_a because_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n be_v not_o yet_o appear_v because_o the_o veil_n of_o the_o temple_n be_v not_o yet_o break_v it_o be_v i_o say_v expedient_a and_o needful_a that_o this_o land_n of_o chanaan_n fullness_n and_o plenty_n now_o let_v we_o cast_v ourselves_o down_o before_o the_o face_n of_o our_o good_a god_n with_o acknowledgement_n of_o our_o fault_n pray_v he_o to_o make_v we_o feel_v they_o better_o than_o we_o have_v do_v until_o we_o be_v say_v to_o a_o true_a repentance_n and_o that_o more_o and_o more_o feel_v our_o own_o wretchedness_n we_o may_v learn_v to_o resist_v all_o day_n only_o but_o that_o we_o ought_v to_o exercise_v ourselves_o therein_o all_o the_o time_n of_o our_o life_n and_o when_o we_o hear_v this_o behold_v the_o statute_n behold_v the_o ordinance_n walk_v therein_o let_v we_o not_o make_v further_a inquiry_n what_o we_o ought_v to_o do_v for_o there_o remain_v no_o doubt_v when_o our_o lord_n have_v once_o speak_v we_o must_v no_o long_o allege_v i_o know_v not_o whether_o this_o be_v good_a i_o know_v not_o whether_o somewhat_o else_o be_v to_o be_v add_v content_a we_o ourselves_o with_o that_o which_o god_n have_v show_v we_o for_o than_o god_n show_v we_o that_o we_o have_v no_o foolish_a devotion_n which_o lead_v we_o wander_v hither_o and_o thither_o know_v that_o god_n have_v not_o envy_v they_o which_o be_v under_o his_o charge_n the_o knowledge_n of_o any_o thing_n behooveful_a for_o they_o but_o have_v teach_v they_o all_o that_o which_o be_v profitable_a and_o necessary_a for_o they_o let_v we_o therefore_o
