thou_o accurse_v and_o he_o also_o who_o have_v teach_v thou_o this_o for_o i_o know_v not_o how_o to_o make_v entrance_n here_o since_o if_o i_o abase_v thou_o by_o confusion_n thou_o raise_v thyself_o up_o as_o high_a as_o heaven_n by_o the_o considetation_n of_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n and_o if_o i_o raise_v thou_o up_o towards_o presumption_n thou_o abase_v thyself_o by_o the_o consideration_n of_o thy_o sin_n as_o low_a as_o hell_n by_o way_n of_o humility_n now_o after_o this_o very_a manner_n be_v we_o to_o use_v this_o exercise_n and_o so_o shall_v we_o on_o the_o one_o side_n be_v full_a of_o circumspection_n and_o fear_v and_o on_o the_o other_o full_a of_o courage_n and_o joy_n fearful_a in_o regard_n of_o ourselves_o and_o joyful_a through_o our_o hope_n in_o god_n these_o be_v those_o two_o lesson_n which_o god_n give_v daily_o to_o his_o elect_a the_o one_o to_o make_v they_o see_v their_o defect_n and_o the_o other_o to_o make_v they_o see_v the_o goodness_n of_o god_n who_o take_v they_o from_o we_o with_o so_o much_o love_n chap._n ix_o of_o the_o great_a benefit_n and_o profit_n which_o grow_v by_o this_o exercise_n of_o a_o man_n know_v himself_o to_o the_o end_n haâ—_n we_o may_v yet_o be_v more_o animate_v to_o this_o exercise_n of_o the_o knowledge_n of_o ourselves_o we_o will_v go_v on_o declare_v some_o great_a benefit_n and_o advantage_n which_o be_v contain_v therein_o one_o of_o the_o chief_n thereof_o have_v be_v show_v already_o namely_o that_o this_o be_v the_o foundation_n and_o root_n of_o humility_n and_o the_o necessary_a mean_n both_o for_o the_o purchase_n and_o preservation_n thereof_o one_o of_o those_o ancient_a father_n be_v ask_v how_o a_o man_n may_v do_v to_o obtain_v true_a humility_n make_v this_o answer_n if_o he_o consider_v only_o his_o own_o sin_n sound_v &_o dig_v deep_a into_o the_o knowledge_n of_o himself_o this_o man_n shall_v obtain_v true_a humility_n this_o alone_o be_v sufficient_a to_o make_v we_o attend_v much_o to_o this_o exercise_n since_o it_o import_v we_o so_o very_o much_o towards_o the_o obtain_n of_o this_o virtue_n but_o yet_o we_o may_v pass_v further_o on_o and_o say_v that_o the_o humble_a knowledge_n of_o
he_o who_o make_v you_o lose_v eternal_a glory_n and_o deserve_v hell_n for_o even_o him_z who_o wrought_v you_o so_o much_o hurt_v and_o still_o persist_v in_o do_v it_o do_v you_o not_o think_v that_o you_o have_v cause_n to_o detest_v well_o now_o this_o person_n be_v yourself_o a_o opposite_a and_o enemy_n of_o god_n a_o opposite_a and_o enemy_n of_o your_o own_o salvation_n chap._n x._o that_o the_o knowledge_n of_o one_o self_n do_v not_o cause_n dismay_v but_o rather_o give_v conrage_v and_o strength_n there_o be_v another_o great_a benefit_n which_o grow_v from_o the_o exercise_n of_o know_v a_o man_n self_n that_o not_o only_o it_o cause_v no_o dismay_n or_o base_a fear_n as_o perhaps_o some_o may_v doubt_v but_o rather_o a_o great_a heart_n and_o courage_n towards_o all_o those_o thing_n which_o be_v good_a and_o the_o reason_n of_o this_o be_v that_o when_o a_o man_n know_v himself_o he_o see_v that_o here_o be_v no_o colour_n why_o he_o shall_v rely_v upon_o himself_o but_o that_o distrust_v himself_o he_o must_v put_v all_o his_o confidence_n in_o god_n in_o who_o he_o find_v himself_o strong_a and_o able_a for_o all_o thing_n hence_o it_o be_v that_o these_o be_v the_o man_n who_o be_v apt_a to_o attempt_v and_o undertake_v great_a thing_n and_o these_o be_v they_o who_o go_v through_o with_o they_o for_o in_o regard_n they_o ascribe_v all_o to_o god_n and_o nothing_o to_o themselves_o god_n take_v the_o business_n in_o hand_n and_o make_v it_o he_o and_o hold_v it_o upon_o his_o own_o account_n and_o then_o he_o be_v wont_a to_o do_v mighty_a thing_n and_o even_a wonder_n by_o the_o mean_n of_o weak_a instrument_n to_o show_v the_o riches_n and_o treasure_n of_o his_o mercy_n god_n will_v do_v wonderful_a thing_n by_o instrument_n who_o be_v miserable_a and_o weak_a he_o use_v to_o put_v the_o treasure_n of_o his_o mercy_n into_o the_o poor_a vessel_n for_o thus_o do_v his_o glory_n shine_v most_o this_o be_v that_o which_o god_n say_v to_o st_n paul_n when_o be_v even_o tire_v with_o temptation_n he_o cry_v out_o and_o beg_v that_o he_o may_v be_v deliver_v from_o they_o and_o god_n make_v he_o this_o answer_n my_o grace_n shall_v be_v sufficient_a for_o thou_o how_o great_a soever_o thy_o temptation_n and_o misery_n may_v be_v and_o then_o do_v the_o power_n of_o god_n prove_v itself_o to_o be_v more_o strong_a and_o perfect_a when_o the_o weakness_n and_o infirmity_n be_v more_o apparent_a for_o as_o the_o physician_n gain_v more_o honour_n when_o the_o sickness_n which_o he_o cure_v be_v more_o dangerous_a so_o when_o there_o be_v more_o weakness_n in_o we_o our_o delivery_n bring_v more_o glory_n to_o god_n arm_n and_o power_n and_o so_o do_v saint_n augustine_n and_o saint_n ambrose_n expound_v this_o place_n so_o that_o when_o a_o man_n know_v and_o distrust_v himself_o and_o put_v all_o his_o confidence_n in_o god_n then_o do_v his_o majesty_n come_v and_o help_v and_o when_o on_o the_o other_o side_n a_o man_n put_v confidence_n in_o himself_o and_o in_o his_o own_o diligence_n and_o mean_n he_o be_v forsake_v by_o almighty_a god_n this_o say_v saint_n basil_n be_v the_o cause_n why_o when_o we_o desire_v to_o make_v our_o prayer_n best_o and_o to_o have_v most_o devotion_n in_o certain_a principal_a time_n and_o occasion_n it_o sal_n out_o many_o time_n that_o we_o have_v less_o because_o we_o put_v our_o confidence_n in_o our_o own_o mean_n and_o in_o our_o own_o diligence_n and_o preparation_n and_o at_o other_o time_n we_o be_v prevent_v with_o great_a benediction_n and_o sweetness_n when_o we_o look_v for_o they_o least_o to_o the_o end_n that_o we_o may_v know_v that_o this_o be_v a_o effect_n of_o the_o grace_n and_o mercy_n of_o our_o lord_n and_o of_o no_o diligence_n or_o merit_n of_o we_o so_o that_o a_o man_n know_v his_o misery_n and_o frailty_n cause_v no_o cowardice_n or_o dismay_v but_o rather_o give_v courage_n and_o strength_n in_o regard_n that_o it_o make_v he_o distrust_v himself_o and_o place_n all_o his_o confidence_n in_o god_n and_o this_o be_v also_o that_o which_o â—e_a apostle_n say_v when_o i_o be_o weak_a then_o be_o i_o strong_a 2_o cor._n 12.10_o that_o be_v when_o i_o be_o humble_v than_o i_o be_o exalt_v for_o thus_o do_v hoth_a saint_n augustine_n and_o saint_n ambrose_n declare_v it_o when_o i_o humble_a and_o abase_v myself_o and_o know_v that_o i_o be_o good_a for_o nothing_o then_o be_o i_o exalt_v and_o raise_v up_o whilst_o i_o know_v and_o see_v my_o infirmity_n and_o misery_n fasten_v myself_o upon_o god_n i_o find_v myself_o more_o strong_a and_o more_o full_a of_o courage_n for_o he_o be_v all_o my_o confidence_n and_o strength_n hereby_o you_o may_v understand_v that_o it_o be_v not_o humility_n nor_o any_o thing_n which_o spring_v from_o thence_o when_o there_o come_v to_o we_o sometime_o certain_a dismay_v and_o dejection_n concern_v our_o little_a progress_n in_o grace_n and_o when_o we_o fear_v that_o we_o shall_v never_o obtain_v such_o or_o such_o a_o virtue_n and_o never_o overcome_v such_o a_o ill_a condition_n or_o inclination_n or_o that_o we_o shall_v not_o be_v fit_a for_o this_o or_o that_o office_n and_o ministry_n in_o which_o we_o be_v or_o may_v be_v employ_v this_o may_v seem_v to_o be_v humility_n but_o many_o time_n it_o be_v not_o so_o but_o rather_o spring_n from_o pride_n for_o such_o a_o one_o cast_v his_o eye_n upon_o himself_o as_o if_o by_o his_o own_o strength_n and_o diligence_n he_o be_v to_o go_v through_o with_o that_o business_n whereas_o he_o ought_v to_o cast_v they_o upon_o god_n in_o who_o we_o be_v to_o be_v full_a of_o confidence_n and_o courage_n and_o say_v the_o lord_n be_v my_o light_n and_o my_o salvation_n who_o then_o shall_v i_o fear_v the_o lord_n be_v the_o strength_n of_o my_o life_n of_o who_o then_o shall_v i_o be_v afraid_a if_o whole_a army_n shall_v rise_v against_o i_o my_o heart_n shall_v nor_o be_v afraid_a if_o they_o shall_v bid_v i_o battle_n yet_o will_v i_o hope_v in_o god_n psal_n 27._o though_o i_o walk_v in_o the_o midst_n of_o the_o very_a shadow_n of_o and_o misery_n and_o so_o say_v the_o apostle_n st._n paul_n i_o will_v glad_o glory_v in_o my_o infirmity_n and_o weakness_n that_o so_o the_o power_n of_o christ_n may_v dwell_v in_o i_o and_o st._n ambrose_n upon_o those_o word_n i_o be_o please_v in_o my_o infirmity_n say_v if_o a_o christian_a be_v to_o glory_n it_o be_v to_o be_v in_o his_o own_o poverty_n and_o misery_n whereby_o he_o may_v increase_v and_o prosper_v in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n st._n augustine_n bring_v that_o of_o the_o prophet_n to_o this_o purpose_n thou_o o_o god_n send_v a_o gracious_a rain_n upon_o thy_o inheritance_n and_o refresh_v it_o when_o it_o be_v weary_a when_o think_v you_o that_o god_n will_v give_v the_o voluntary_a and_o sweet_a rain_n of_o his_o gift_n and_o grace_n to_o his_o
