his_o majesty_n letter_n to_o the_o maior_fw-la of_o kingston_n upon_o hull_n 25._o of_o april_n 1642_o to_o our_o trusty_a and_o well-beloved_a the_o major_a alderman_n and_o burgess_n of_o our_o town_n and_o port_n of_o kingston_n upon_o hull_n trusty_a and_o well-beloved_a we_o greet_v you_o well_o whereas_o we_o have_v be_v long_o sensible_a of_o the_o just_a complaint_n and_o great_a burden_n of_o our_o subject_n in_o these_o northern_a part_n by_o occasion_n of_o the_o garrison_n in_o our_o town_n of_o hull_n and_o whereas_o we_o be_v upon_o friday_n the_o 22._o of_o this_o month_n petition_v by_o divers_a of_o the_o gentry_n and_o other_o inhabitant_n of_o this_o county_n that_o the_o munition_n at_o hull_n may_v remain_v in_o the_o magazine_n there_o for_o the_o security_n of_o our_o person_n and_o of_o all_o these_o northern_a part_n their_o fear_n be_v much_o ground_v upon_o the_o parliament_n relation_n of_o foreign_a invasion_n upon_o which_o the_o more_o to_o express_v our_o care_n of_o our_o people_n safety_n we_o do_v ourself_o go_v in_o person_n to_o that_o our_o town_n that_o upon_o our_o own_o view_n we_o may_v consult_v what_o proportion_n of_o it_o may_v be_v fy_o remove_v upon_o any_o press_a occasion_n have_v a_o respect_n to_o the_o promise_a supply_n for_o scotland_n the_o necessary_a use_n of_o arm_n for_o ireland_n as_o well_o as_o for_o the_o safeguard_n and_o satisfaction_n of_o these_o northern_a part_n but_o much_o contrary_a to_o our_o expectation_n and_o the_o duty_n and_o allegiance_n of_o our_o subject_n we_o find_v the_o gate_n of_o that_o our_o town_n shut_v and_o the_o bridge_n draw_v up_o against_o we_o and_o though_o we_o come_v in_o a_o peaceable_a way_n repose_v the_o great_a confidence_n in_o the_o loveand_a loyalty_n of_o our_o people_n by_o offer_v as_o we_o do_v to_o put_v our_o own_o person_n and_o our_o two_o son_n but_o with_o twenty_o horse_n into_o that_o town_n there_o be_v in_o it_o a_o garrison_n of_o about_o eight_o hundred_o soldier_n yet_o we_o be_v not_o only_o deny_v entrance_n but_o in_o a_o warlike_a manner_n oppose_v by_o sir_n john_n hotham_n the_o arm_a man_n be_v place_v in_o all_o the_o port_n and_o about_o all_o the_o wall_n of_o the_o town_n allege_v though_o false_o for_o his_o excuse_n the_o command_n of_o the_o parliament_n and_o be_v press_v by_o we_o to_o show_v such_o a_o order_n in_o writing_n he_o can_v not_o do_v it_o for_o we_o be_v ever_o very_o confident_a that_o there_o be_v never_o any_o public_a order_n of_o they_o that_o can_v so_o much_o as_o imply_v a_o denial_n to_o our_o admission_n we_o know_v well_o enough_o that_o he_o be_v entrust_v by_o they_o for_o a_o guard_n and_o security_n of_o that_o place_n against_o foreign_a enemy_n or_o those_o at_o home_n who_o be_v disaffect_v in_o religion_n and_o not_o against_o his_o natural_a sovereign_n which_o hostile_a opposition_n and_o adtuall_a levy_n of_o war_n against_o our_o person_n be_v by_o the_o statute_n of_o 25_o ed._n 3._o enact_v high_a treason_n which_o statute_n consider_v and_o that_o for_o the_o avoid_n of_o all_o jealousy_n as_o we_o have_v say_v we_o be_v content_a to_o have_v be_v admit_v with_o so_o very_o small_a a_o number_n in_o our_o company_n we_o be_v thereupon_o constrain_v to_o proclaim_v the_o say_a sir_n john_n hotham_n and_o all_o those_o that_o shall_v adhere_v to_o or_o assist_v he_o traitor_n of_o all_o which_o abovesaid_a passage_n we_o have_v acquaint_v our_o parliament_n demand_v justice_n to_o be_v do_v upon_o he_o that_o they_o may_v thereby_o have_v opportunity_n to_o vindicate_v the_o imputation_n lay_v on_o they_o by_o sir_n john_n hotham_n and_o wethe_v easy_a way_n to_o chastise_v according_a to_o the_o law_n so_o high_a a_o treason_n and_o lest_o a_o misunderstand_n of_o our_o intention_n or_o of_o the_o law_n may_v misguide_v any_o of_o our_o loyal_a and_o well-affected_a subject_n the_o inhabitant_n captain_n officer_n or_o soldier_n in_o that_o town_n we_o have_v think_v fit_a to_o commend_v to_o your_o consideration_n the_o aforenamed_a statute_n with_o that_o of_o the_o 11._o of_o hen._n 7._o cha._n 1_o wherein_o it_o be_v dec●ared_v by_o the_o unanimous_a assent_n of_o parliament_n that_o the_o subject_n of_o this_o realm_n be_v bind_v by_o the_o duty_n of_o allegiance_n to_o serve_v the_o king_n for_o the_o time_n be_v for_o the_o defence_n of_o his_o person_n and_o the_o land_n against_o every_o rebellion_n may_v or_o power_n raise_v against_o he_o and_o with_o his_o majesty_n to_o ente_fw-la or_o abide_v in_o service_n in_o battle_n if_o cause_n so_o require_v and_o it_o be_v therefore_o then_o enact_v that_o from_o thenceforth_o no_o person_n whatsoever_o that_o shall_v attend_v upon_o the_o king_n or_o be_v in_o place_n by_o his_o command_n within_o or_o without_o the_o land_n that_o for_o the_o same_o deed_n and_o true_a service_n of_o allegiance_n he_o and_o they_o be_v no_o way_n attaint_v or_o convict_v of_o high_a treason_n or_o of_o other_o offence_n for_o that_o cause_n by_o any_o process_n of_o law_n whereby_o he_o or_o any_o of_o they_o the_o law_n on_o the_o one_o side_n and_o the_o security_n of_o such_o as_o shall_v adhere_v to_o we_o on_o the_o other_o they_o be_v not_o mislead_v through_o ignorance_n to_o decline_v their_o allegiance_n and_o that_o the_o soldier_n may_v lay_v down_o their_o arm_n and_o admit_v our_o entrance_n in_o a_o peaceable_a way_n in_o so_o do_v you_o shall_v both_o discharge_v your_o duty_n and_o
