justify_v a_o sinner_n as_o to_o the_o meritorious_a cause_n of_o it_o the_o knit_n of_o these_o two_o together_o he_o shall_v see_v of_o the_o travel_n of_o his_o soul_n and_o shall_v be_v satisfy_v and_o by_o his_o knowledge_n shall_v my_o righteous_a servant_n justify_v many_o do_v hold_v it_o forth_o to_o be_v christ_n death_n and_o purchase_n the_o travel_n of_o his_o soul_n be_v and_o must_v be_v the_o ground_n on_o which_o a_o lose_a sinner_n be_v justify_v before_o the_o throne_n of_o god_n this_o both_o confirm_v what_o we_o former_o propose_v concern_v this_o doctrine_n and_o also_o show_v that_o the_o justification_n of_o a_o sinner_n be_v not_o by_o inherent_a holiness_n whence_o come_v it_o i_o pray_v that_o make_v a_o sinner_n acceptable_a before_o god_n it_o be_v not_o from_o habitual_a nor_o actual_a inherent_a grace_n but_o from_o christ_n righteousness_n lay_v hold_v on_o by_o faith_n that_o grip_v and_o adher_v to_o it_o but_o from_o the_o latter_a part_n of_o the_o word_n we_o will_v have_v more_o particular_a occasion_n to_o speak_v to_o this_o where_o these_o two_o be_v knit_v together_o by_o his_o knowledge_n shall_v my_o righteous_a servant_n justify_v many_o for_o he_o shall_v bear_v their_o iniquity_n therefore_o we_o do_v now_o pass_v it_o the_o object_n of_o this_o benefit_n be_v many_o many_z ordinary_o in_o scripture_n imply_v these_o two_o thing_n 1._o a_o great_a number_n and_o so_o it_o show_v the_o extent_n of_o the_o object_n that_o be_v that_o christ_n shall_v purchase_v and_o redeem_v many_o or_o by_o his_o death_n procure_v justification_n to_o many_o 2._o a_o restriction_n and_o thus_o many_o be_v oppose_v to_o all_o and_o so_o the_o meaning_n be_v there_o shall_v many_o be_v justify_v by_o christ_n death_n but_o not_o all_o and_o therefore_o as_o none_o can_v from_o these_o word_n plead_v for_o a_o universality_n in_o justification_n so_o neither_o can_v they_o in_o redemption_n for_o he_o only_o bear_v their_o iniquity_n who_o by_o his_o knowledge_n he_o justify_v look_v on_o these_o many_o in_o these_o twofold_a consideration_n we_o may_v take_v these_o observation_n from_o it_o 1._o take_v it_o extensive_o observe_v 1._o that_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n be_v of_o itself_o able_a to_o justify_v many_o it_o be_v a_o righteousness_n that_o can_v satisfy_v for_o the_o sin_n of_o many_o or_o thus_o that_o in_o the_o covenant_n of_o redemption_n there_o be_v a_o intend_a application_n of_o christ_n righteousness_n and_o purchase_v to_o many_o 2._o that_o there_o be_v many_o who_o shall_v indeed_o partake_v of_o christ_n righteousness_n and_o be_v justify_v by_o it_o it_o be_v not_o one_o or_o two_o or_o a_o thousand_o but_o as_o it_o be_v intend_v to_o justify_v many_o so_o it_o shall_v be_v actual_o apply_v to_o many_o for_o their_o justification_n 3._o compare_v the_o former_a word_n he_o shall_v see_v of_o the_o travel_n of_o his_o soul_n and_o shall_v be_v satisfy_v with_o these_o word_n by_o his_o knowledge_n shall_v my_o righteous_a servant_n justify_v many_o observe_v that_o christ_n be_v not_o satisfy_v for_o the_o travel_n of_o his_o soul_n except_o many_o be_v justify_v or_o thus_o it_o be_v christ_n satisfaction_n how_o many_o there_o be_v that_o make_v use_v of_o he_o and_o that_o by_o make_v use_n of_o he_o come_v to_o be_v justify_v by_o he_o as_o afterward_o we_o will_v see_v these_o many_o be_v all_o these_o that_o believe_v all_o these_o that_o have_v this_o true_a and_o save_a knowledge_n of_o he_o and_o do_v right_o acknowledge_v he_o the_o make_v out_o of_o one_o of_o these_o doctrine_n will_v make_v they_o all_o out_o that_o christ_n righteousness_n be_v able_a to_o justify_v many_o that_o many_o shall_v be_v justify_v by_o it_o and_o that_o it_o be_v his_o satisfaction_n and_o delight_n that_o many_o be_v justify_v and_o get_v this_o good_a of_o it_o it_o be_v say_v matth._n 20.28_o that_o he_o come_v to_o lay_v down_o his_o life_n a_o ransom_n for_o many_o and_o rom._n 5.15_o that_o the_o gift_n of_o grace_n which_o be_v by_o one_o man_n jesus_n christ_n have_v abound_v unto_o many_o and_o v._o 19_o as_o by_o one_o man_n disobedience_n many_o be_v make_v sinner_n so_o by_o the_o obedience_n of_o one_o shalâ—_n many_o be_v make_v righteous_a let_v but_o these_o four_o thing_n be_v put_v together_o and_o consider_v and_o it_o will_v be_v find_v that_o there_o be_v no_o just_a ground_n to_o quarrel_v these_o doctrine_n 1._o the_o native_a worth_n and_o intrinsic_a value_n that_o be_v in_o the_o satisfaction_n of_o christ_n it_o be_v the_o blood_n of_o god_n of_o the_o person_n that_o be_v god_n it_o be_v a_o offer_v that_o flow_v from_o a_o willing_a and_o cheerful_a giver_n which_o make_v it_o the_o more_o acceptable_a he_o be_v content_a with_o delight_n to_o pay_v the_o price_n there_o can_v be_v a_o limit_v or_o bound_v of_o this_o worth_a and_o value_n because_o there_o can_v be_v any_o bound_a or_o limit_v of_o the_o person_n that_o give_v the_o value_n to_o it_o if_o it_o be_v consider_v in_o itself_o 2._o consider_v the_o freeness_n of_o the_o offer_n which_o take_v in_o many_o our_o lord_n communicat_o very_o free_o what_o he_o have_v buy_v very_o dear_a and_o it_o be_v do_v with_o respect_n to_o his_o take_n in_o of_o many_o to_o take_v away_o all_o exception_n from_o the_o poor_a and_o needy_a and_o from_o they_o that_o want_v money_n 3._o as_o the_o term_n be_v
doctrine_n that_o ever_o you_o hear_v it_o have_v be_v in_o some_o respect_n better_o that_o you_o have_v hear_v that_o it_o be_v but_o two_o or_o three_o that_o will_v come_v to_o heaven_n because_o the_o hear_n of_o many_n come_v thither_o will_v great_o aggravat_fw-la your_o guilt_n who_o neglect_v so_o great_a a_o salvation_n therefore_o take_v two_o or_o three_o caveat_n of_o this_o doctrine_n and_o 1._o beware_v of_o be_v secure_a because_o there_o be_v many_o that_o shall_v be_v justify_v there_o be_v many_o more_o that_o will_v perish_v compare_v these_o that_o perish_v with_o these_o that_o will_v be_v save_v and_o it_o will_v be_v find_v that_o they_o be_v but_o a_o handful_n that_o will_v be_v save_v and_o that_o swarm_n and_o multitude_n will_v go_v to_o hell_n therefore_o when_o you_o hear_v that_o the_o door_n be_v open_v to_o many_o let_v it_o encourage_v you_o to_o enter_v in_o but_o remember_v this_o that_o more_o will_v be_v exclude_v and_o perish_v then_o will_v enter_v in_o and_o be_v save_v the_o scripture_n say_v many_o be_v call_v but_o few_o be_v choose_v even_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o call_v within_o the_o visible_a church_n 2._o consider_v that_o grace_n enlarge_n of_o this_o benefit_n to_o take_v in_o many_o will_v be_v your_o great_a challenge_n and_o aggravation_n that_o shall_v miss_v and_o come_v short_a of_o it_o and_o north_n and_o shall_v sit_v down_o with_o abraham_n isaac_n and_o jacob_n in_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n what_o weep_v and_o gnash_n of_o tooth_n will_v it_o cause_v to_o they_o who_o shall_v be_v seclude_v and_o therefore_o 3_o beware_v of_o think_v that_o there_o be_v the_o less_o diligence_n or_o fear_v require_v because_o we_o say_v that_o many_o will_v be_v justify_v for_o you_o lay_v weight_n either_o on_o many_o or_o few_n be_v justify_v except_o by_o way_n of_o motive_n but_o on_o the_o way_n that_o you_o take_v to_o come_v by_o the_o end_n though_o a_o great_a and_o shut_v himself_o out_o when_o grace_n do_v make_v use_n of_o such_o expression_n to_o bring_v he_o in_o and_o it_o will_v be_v ground_n of_o conviction_n to_o all_o that_o have_v so_o wide_a a_o door_n open_v to_o they_o and_o do_v not_o strive_v to_o enter_v in_o it_o may_v be_v many_o of_o you_o think_v little_a of_o this_o now_o but_o in_o that_o day_n when_o many_o shall_v be_v take_v a_o great_a matter_n to_o have_v the_o solid_a impression_n of_o christ_n fullness_n on_o our_o spirit_n and_o to_o be_v thorough_o persuade_v that_o there_o be_v a_o rigteousness_n to_o be_v have_v in_o he_o yet_o the_o consolation_n be_v not_o full_a unless_o there_o be_v clearness_n in_o the_o way_n how_o this_o righteousness_n be_v apply_v and_o come_v by_o and_o a_o kind_o yield_v to_o follow_v that_o way_n for_o though_o we_o know_v that_o christ_n die_v and_o that_o there_o be_v a_o righteousness_n purchase_v yet_o there_o be_v many_o that_o be_v never_o justify_v and_o that_o shall_v never_o be_v save_v by_o it_o and_o therefore_o it_o will_v not_o be_v so_o much_o to_o know_v that_o there_o be_v such_o a_o thing_n if_o he_o have_v not_o lay_v down_o a_o way_n how_o we_o may_v be_v partaker_n of_o it_o which_o way_n can_v no_o more_o fail_v and_o misgive_v than_o christ_n righteousness_n can_v and_o these_o word_n hold_v out_o the_o way_n by_o his_o knowledge_n shall_v my_o righteous_a servant_n justify_v many_o that_o be_v through_o faith_n in_o christ_n many_o shall_v be_v make_v righteous_a his_o satisfaction_n shall_v be_v account_v the_o believer_n whereby_o it_o shall_v come_v to_o pass_v that_o they_o shall_v be_v as_o real_o justify_v as_o if_o they_o have_v bear_v their_o own_o iniquity_n because_o his_o bear_n of_o they_o shall_v be_v account_v they_o we_o speak_v 1._o of_o this_o general_a that_o there_o be_v such_o a_o thing_n as_o justification_n or_o god_n absolve_v of_o a_o sinner_n who_o by_o his_o own_o iniquity_n be_v liable_a to_o the_o curse_n 2._o that_o this_o justification_n be_v the_o proper_a effect_n of_o christ_n death_n 3._o from_o the_o object_n of_o it_o that_o they_o be_v many_o yet_o not_o all_o who_o be_v justify_v many_o be_v put_v as_o a_o mid_n betwixt_o two_o extreme_n neither_o include_v all_o nor_o only_o take_v in_o a_o very_a few_o have_v put_v by_o these_o more_o general_a doctrine_n we_o will_v now_o speak_v a_o little_a to_o this_o great_a benefit_n of_o justification_n in_o reference_n to_o the_o particular_a cause_n that_o concur_v to_o the_o attain_n of_o it_o which_o will_v lead_v we_o to_o a_o more_o distinct_a uptake_n of_o it_o there_o be_v ground_n for_o they_o all_o in_o the_o text_n and_o therefore_o we_o shall_v put_v they_o together_o that_o you_o may_v have_v a_o short_a view_n of_o this_o great_a benefit_n complex_o there_o be_v common_o six_o cause_n assign_v to_o or_o make_v necessary_a to_o concur_v in_o justification_n though_o we_o know_v not_o that_o be_v faith_n 5._o the_o formal_a cause_n or_o that_o wherein_o justification_n consist_v and_o that_o be_v imputation_n of_o christ_n righteousness_n to_o the_o sinner_n upon_o his_o acceptation_n of_o it_o and_o the_o absolve_a of_o the_o sinner_n by_o virtue_n of_o his_o righteousness_n 6._o the_o external_n instrumental_a cause_n and_o that_o be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n by_o which_o this_o justification_n be_v reveal_v and_o wherein_o god_n declare_v and_o pass_v the_o sentence_n for_o the_o first_o you_o will_v for_o clear_v of_o it_o remember_v what_o we_o speak_v in_o our_o enter_v on_o this_o doctrine_n
in_o his_o justice_n and_o mercy_n they_o do_v what_o they_o can_v that_o god_n shall_v neither_o be_v just_a nor_o gracious_a but_o he_o shall_v be_v just_o in_o condemn_v they_o whether_o they_o will_v or_o not_o though_o he_o be_v not_o glorify_v in_o his_o grace_n as_o to_o they_o they_o set_v themselves_o what_o they_o can_v to_o let_v it_o yet_o in_o his_o justice_n he_o shall_v most_o jesus_n and_o this_o arise_v from_o the_o text_n on_o these_o two_o consideration_n 1._o because_o this_o justification_n be_v lay_v down_o as_o a_o effect_n of_o christ_n soul-travel_n and_o suffer_v justify_n of_o he_o it_o be_v christ_n merit_n his_o soul-travel_n and_o suffer_v papist_n deny_v this_o and_o make_v the_o next_o immediate_a cause_n to_o be_v the_o grace_n infuse_v in_o we_o that_o of_o our_o iniquity_n hence_o 1_o cor._n 1.30_o christ_n be_v call_v our_o righteousness_n he_o be_v say_v the_o apostle_n make_v of_o god_n unto_o we_o wisdom_n righteousness_n etc._n etc._n not_o only_o by_o christ_n have_v we_o a_o righteousness_n that_o make_v we_o acceptable_a to_o god_n but_o his_o righteousness_n be_v we_o and_o god_n respect_v of_o we_o in_o or_o through_o it_o make_v we_o acceptable_a 2_o not_o only_o be_v his_o righteousness_n the_o meritorious_a cause_n but_o it_o be_v the_o only_a meritorious_a or_o the_o alone_a meritorious_a cause_n and_o herein_o papist_n and_o we_o differ_v they_o grant_v that_o christ_n satisfaction_n be_v the_o meritorious_a cause_n but_o remot_o only_o as_o it_o procure_v inward_a or_o inherent_a grace_n by_o which_o we_o merit_v but_o they_o will_v not_o have_v it_o to_o be_v the_o only_a meritorious_a cause_n but_o will_v needs_o have_v our_o own_o work_n to_o merit_v also_o and_o that_o proper_o whereas_o the_o prophet_n speak_v of_o justification_n as_o the_o effect_n of_o christ_n soul-travel_n only_o and_o if_o so_o then_o there_o can_v be_v no_o other_o thing_n admit_v for_o there_o can_v be_v two_o social_a or_o joint_a meritorious_a cause_n therefore_o throughout_o the_o scripture_n when_o the_o merit_n of_o justification_n be_v attribute_v to_o christ_n it_o exclude_v all_o other_o thing_n and_o be_v oppose_v to_o our_o own_o work_n which_o be_v the_o three_o thing_n 3_o then_o we_o say_v that_o christ_n righteousness_n be_v the_o meritorious_a cause_n of_o our_o justification_n as_o vvn_n from_o procure_v ability_n to_o we_o to_o pay_v our_o own_o debt_n i_o shall_v clear_v this_o four_o branch_n a_o little_a further_o because_o it_o will_v serve_v to_o clear_v the_o rest_n that_o be_v thâ—t_v christ_n righteousness_n as_o it_o be_v in_o he_o and_o impute_v to_o we_o be_v he_o only_o meritorious_a cause_n of_o our_o justification_n and_o if_o we_o consider_v 1_o the_o way_n of_o shall_v allege_v that_o such_o a_o person_n be_v owe_v so_o much_o and_o he_o shall_v say_v i_o can_v be_v charge_v with_o it_o and_o upon_o what_o ground_n not_o because_o i_o be_v not_o owe_v the_o debt_n but_o because_o such_o anon_o have_v pay_v it_o for_o i_o so_o say_v the_o apostle_n rom._n 8.34_o who_o shall_v lay_v any_o thing_n to_o the_o charge_n of_o god_n elect_v it_o be_v god_n justify_v in_o tâ—e_v covenant_n of_o grace_n must_v be_v different_a from_o the_o account_n whereon_o one_o be_v justify_v in_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n otherways_o they_o will_v not_o be_v opposite_a the_o covenant_n of_o work_n respect_n inherent_a righteousness_n as_o the_o condition_n the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n respect_v faith_n take_v hold_n of_o the_o righteousness_n of_o righteousness_n become_v we_o as_o our_o sin_n become_v he_o then_o certain_o his_o righteousness_n be_v the_o cause_n of_o our_o justification_n as_o it_o be_v in_o he_o inherent_o and_o in_o we_o who_o have_v pay_v their_o ransom_n which_o proclamation_n of_o pardon_n run_v on_o these_o term_n whoever_o will_v lay_v down_o arm_n and_o come_v in_o and_o accept_v of_o the_o king_n pardon_v that_o be_v procure_v and_o make_v offer_v of_o shall_v be_v acquit_v of_o the_o guilt_n of_o rebellion_n and_o receive_v into_o favour_n who_o when_o ever_o they_o be_v challenge_v will_v plead_v gross_a mistake_n in_o this_o be_v remediless_a when_o we_o come_v before_o god_n even_o before_o the_o tribunal_n of_o man_n if_o we_o make_v a_o wrong_a defence_n it_o hazard_v our_o cause_n so_o be_v it_o here_o for_o to_o have_v a_o hide_v place_n in_o christ_n and_o under_o the_o covert_n of_o his_o righteousness_n be_v our_o only_a defence_n before_o the_o dreadful_a tribunal_n of_o god_n 3._o because_o it_o serve_v much_o to_o clear_v this_o truth_n for_o we_o will_v have_v you_o know_v that_o it_o be_v not_o enough_o to_o speak_v of_o christ_n merit_n as_o the_o cause_n of_o our_o friendship_n with_o god_n a_o papist_n will_v do_v that_o who_o yet_o lean_v not_o to_o christ_n merit_n alone_o but_o to_o his_o own_o at_o least_o in_o part_n and_o in_o conjunction_n with_o christ_n and_o therefore_o we_o will_v now_o and_o then_o speak_v of_o this_o because_o there_o be_v such_o horrible_a ignorance_n of_o it_o though_o a_o fundamental_a truth_n how_o many_o gay_a honest_a folk_n as_o they_o be_v call_v and_o account_v be_v there_o among_o we_o that_o can_v tell_v how_o they_o come_v to_o be_v justify_v or_o what_o be_v the_o ground_n which_o they_o have_v to_o rest_v on_o if_o they_o be_v go_v to_o die_v be_v it_o not_o absurd_a that_o man_n shall_v be_v call_v protestant_n and_o live_v so_o long_o under_o the_o clear_a light_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o yâ—t_v be_v ignorant_a of_o this_o main_a point_n of_o the_o protestant_a religion_n therefore_o 1._o make_v this_o use_n of_o it_o to_o inform_v yourselves_o in_o the_o cause_n of_o your_o justification_n and_o to_o turn_v they_o over_o into_o question_n and_o answer_n to_o yourselves_o â—o_o that_o if_o you_o ask_v what_o be_v the_o efficient_a cause_n of_o justification_n it_o be_v god_n the_o party_n offend_v what_o be_v the_o final_a cause_n of_o it_o it_o be_v hâ—s_n glory_n what_o be_v the_o mâ—ritorious_a cause_n it_o be_v christ_n merit_n or_o his_o righteousness_n impute_v to_o we_o what_o be_v the_o inward_a instrumental_a cause_n it_o be_v faith_n etc._n etc._n according_a to_o the_o solid_a answer_n give_v in_o our_o chatechisme_n to_o that_o question_n word_n of_o our_o catechism_n in_o the_o description_n of_o faith_n as_o he_o be_v offer_v to_o we_o in_o the_o gospel_n all_o these_o cause_n must_v in_o ordinary_a dispensation_n concur_v to_o our_o justification_n and_o the_o pardon_v of_o our_o sin_n the_o second_o use_n serve_v to_o teach_v we_o to_o be_v on_o our_o guard_n against_o the_o popish_a error_n of_o justification_n by_o work_n make_v you_o all_o to_o look_v well_o about_o you_o and_o upon_o this_o account_n to_o abhor_v it_o it_o as_o one_o of_o the_o great_a delusion_n of_o the_o man_n of_o sin_n which_o be_v once_o admit_v will_n with_o your_o own_o consent_n bring_v you_o again_o in_o bondage_n to_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n use_v 3_o follow_v this_o way_n in_o your_o practice_n in_o your_o seek_n after_o justification_n renunce_v your_o own_o righteousness_n and_o lean_a to_o christ_n righteousness_n alone_o what_o better_o be_v many_o of_o we_o in_o our_o practice_n than_o papist_n if_o you_o ask_v many_o what_o be_v it_o that_o satisfy_v the_o justice_n of_o god_n some_o will_v answer_v 1._o their_o good_a prayer_n or_o their_o good_a work_n and_o if_o they_o have_v do_v a_o fault_n they_o but_o by_o one_o or_o other_o of_o these_o way_n they_o delude_v themselves_o and_o that_o but_o very_o few_o have_v christ_n righteousness_n as_o the_o immediate_a ground_n of_o their_o justification_n and_o defence_n before_o god_n be_v ashamed_a therefore_o that_o you_o be_v so_o ignorant_a of_o this_o point_n and_o be_v exhort_v to_o study_v it_o as_o the_o main_a thing_n if_o make_v in_o the_o room_n of_o sinner_n as_o the_o next_o word_n hold_v out_o for_o he_o shall_v bear_v their_o iniquity_n and_o v._o ult_n he_o bear_v the_o sin_n of_o many_o nay_o this_o be_v the_o great_a scope_n of_o the_o chapter_n therefore_o it_o be_v say_v that_o he_o have_v bear_v our_o grief_n and_o carry_v our_o sorrow_n and_o that_o the_o lord_n have_v lay_v on_o he_o the_o iniquity_n his_o suffering_n can_v be_v accept_v for_o we_o for_o suppose_v if_o such_o a_o supposition_n may_v warrantable_o be_v make_v christ_n to_o have_v suffer_v yet_o it_o be_v free_a for_o god_n to_o have_v accept_v that_o as_o a_o satisfaction_n for_o our_o debt_n or_o not_o but_o the_o consideration_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o redemption_n remove_v that_o doubt_v and_o give_v faith_n a_o ground_n to_o lay_v hold_n on_o christ_n suffering_n as_o satisfactory_a to_o the_o justice_n of_o god_n because_o in_o the_o covenant_n of_o redemption_n it_o be_v so_o transact_v and_o agree_v upon_o betwixt_o god_n and_o the_o mediator_n therefore_o the_o apostle_n speak_v heb._n 10.8_o 9_o and_o forward_o from_o psal_n 40._o of_o this_o covenant_n show_v that_o when_o sacrifice_n and_o become_v man_n be_v much_o but_o to_o bear_v the_o burden_n of_o our_o sin_n be_v more_o angel_n wonder_v at_o this_o that_o he_o who_o be_v their_o head_n shall_v become_v so_o low_a as_o to_o fist_n himself_o before_o god_n tribunal_n and_o to_o undergo_v the_o suffer_v of_o death_n and_o to_o take_v on_o the_o weighty_a burden_n of_o the_o elect_v debt_n and_o to_o satisfy_v for_o it_o if_o we_o be_v in_o a_o right_a frame_n of_o spirit_n we_o can_v not_o hear_v this_o word_n but_o it_o will_v ravish_v our_o heart_n and_o put_v we_o to_o a_o pause_n and_o holy_a nonplus_n but_o the_o most_o satisfaction_n mention_v and_o contain_v in_o the_o sinner_n discharge_v even_o so_o be_v it_o here_o it_o be_v christ_n righteousness_n that_o concur_v as_o the_o meritorious_a cause_n of_o the_o sinner_n absolution_n and_o faith_n concurre_v as_o the_o instrumental_a cause_n in_o the_o plead_n of_o that_o defence_n whereon_o justification_n follow_v as_o a_o effect_n of_o
such_o a_o end_n and_o yet_o so_o as_o he_o must_v flee_v into_o it_o ere_o he_o can_v plead_v for_o the_o benefit_n of_o the_o city_n so_o suppose_v a_o sinner_n to_o be_v flee_v to_o jesust_n christ_n by_o faith_n he_o may_v plead_v for_o exemption_n from_o wrath_n by_o god_n determine_v and_o appoint_v a_o mediator_n for_o such_o a_o end_n and_o the_o mediator_n jesus_n christ_n have_v this_o privilege_n confer_v on_o he_o that_o he_o that_o thus_o flee_v unto_o he_o shall_v be_v safe_a yet_o it_o be_v also_o suppose_v that_o such_o a_o sinner_n have_v flee_v to_o he_o else_o he_o can_v not_o expect_v safety_n through_o he_o notwithstanding_o of_o god_n determine_v the_o mediator_n for_o safety_n thus_o we_o will_v have_v these_o three_o put_v together_o and_o yet_o as_o we_o say_v they_o differ_v for_o god_n determination_n be_v the_o efficient_a cause_n &_o fountain_n of_o all_o christ_n satisfaction_n be_v the_o meritorious_a cause_n and_o our_o believe_v be_v the_o ground_n on_o which_o we_o have_v right_a to_o plead_v for_o the_o benefit_n of_o his_o satisfaction_n even_o as_o the_o man_n that_o flee_v to_o the_o city_n of_o refuge_n his_o safety_n be_v not_o by_o any_o virtue_n in_o his_o run_n but_o by_o god_n determination_n yet_o his_o run_v to_o the_o city_n be_v requisite_a as_o the_o mid_n and_o except_o he_o run_v or_o flee_v to_o it_o he_o can_v not_o plead_v for_o the_o benefit_n of_o the_o city_n so_o our_o believe_v give_v we_o ground_n to_o plead_v a_o right_n and_o title_n to_o christ_n and_o his_o satisfaction_n without_o which_o we_o can_v not_o have_v that_o right_n but_o two_o because_o one_o will_v take_v up_o this_o under_o one_o notion_n and_o another_o under_o another_o to_o clear_v it_o therefore_o a_o little_a further_o we_o shall_v again_o consider_v in_o this_o covenant_n these_o three_o step_n 1._o the_o determination_n of_o it_o as_o it_o be_v enact_v in_o the_o council_n of_o the_o godhead_n which_o in_o sum_n be_v this_o that_o such_o and_o such_o person_n shall_v be_v satisfy_v for_o by_o the_o mediator_n and_o his_o satisfaction_n accept_v for_o they_o 2._o the_o execution_n of_o this_o covenant_n where_o we_o take_v in_o all_o our_o lord_n suffering_n all_o the_o stroke_n and_o wound_n that_o justice_n pursue_v he_o with_o as_o cautioner_n for_o the_o elect_n and_o god_n accept_n and_o justify_v of_o he_o and_o declare_v his_o accept_n of_o he_o and_o be_v well_o satisfy_v with_o what_o he_o do_v and_o suffer_v by_o his_o raise_v he_o from_o dead_a 3._o the_o application_n of_o his_o purchase_n by_o his_o accept_a satisfaction_n which_o consist_v in_o these_o 1._o that_o these_o that_o be_v give_v to_o christ_n on_o this_o condition_n that_o his_o satisfaction_n shall_v stand_v good_a for_o they_o shall_v be_v justify_v and_o save_v that_o be_v that_o in_o due_a time_n application_n of_o his_o satisfaction_n shall_v be_v make_v to_o the_o person_n give_v he_o to_o to_o be_v save_v by_o he_o which_o take_v in_o christ_n make_v intercession_n that_o renewing-grace_n faith_n etc._n etc._n may_v be_v give_v to_o such_o person_n 2._o that_o the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n who_o as_o the_o sanctifier_n beget_v faith_n and_o persuade_v to_o embrace_v jesus_n christ_n shall_v be_v give_v they_o then_o 3._o follow_v the_o believer_n actual_a come_n to_o christ_n be_v sweet_o and_o powerful_o draw_v to_o rest_v on_o he_o and_o his_o satisfaction_n whereupon_o follow_v the_o application_n of_o the_o sentence_n of_o justification_n and_o absolution_n that_o result_v from_o the_o former_a so_o that_o whereas_o it_o be_v before_o curse_a be_v he_o that_o continue_v not_o in_o all_o thing_n write_v in_o the_o law_n now_o it_o be_v he_o that_o believe_v on_o jesus_n christ_n have_v eternal_a life_n and_o shall_v never_o come_v into_o condemnation_n all_o these_o go_v and_o agree_v well_o together_o the_o covenant_n as_o the_o ground_n christ_n satisfaction_n as_o the_o meritorious_a cause_n and_o the_o application_n of_o his_o satisfaction_n by_o faith_n which_o entitle_v and_o give_v the_o believer_n a_o right_a to_o it_o the_o reason_n why_o we_o have_v so_o much_o insist_v on_o this_o be_v that_o we_o may_v teach_v you_o to_o join_v respect_n to_o the_o covenant_n of_o redemption_n christ_n suffering_n and_o your_o believe_v together_o it_o will_v not_o be_v faith_n that_o will_v justify_v that_o be_v without_o respect_n to_o the_o covenant_n neither_o will_v the_o covenant_n and_o christ_n satisfaction_n justify_v without_o faith_n yet_o you_o will_v so_o put_v they_o together_o as_o the_o glory_n of_o salvation_n through_o grace_n may_v not_o lie_v on_o faith_n but_o on_o god_n everlasting_a love_n and_o on_o christ_n satisfaction_n and_o indeed_o it_o be_v no_o little_a practic_n for_o a_o soul_n sensible_a of_o sin_n in_o the_o exercise_n of_o faith_n so_o to_o lay_v the_o weight_n of_o its_o salvation_n on_o christ_n and_o the_o covenant_n as_o it_o neglect_v not_o run_v to_o christ_n by_o faitâ—_n and_o so_o to_o lay_v hold_n on_o christ_n by_o faith_n as_o it_o lay_v not_o the_o weight_n on_o faith_n but_o on_o christ_n and_o the_o covenant_n as_o in_o the_o comparison_n before_o use_v suppose_v a_o man_n that_o have_v kill_v another_o unaware_o have_v be_v take_v before_o he_o win_v to_o the_o city_n of_o refuge_n god_n determination_n be_v not_o the_o cause_n of_o that_o but_o his_o not_o run_v or_o his_o not_o come_v at_o the_o city_n so_o it_o may_v be_v that_o some_o be_v apprehend_v by_o the_o justice_n of_o god_n that_o be_v less_o sinful_a than_o other_o yet_o the_o reason_n or_o câ—uâ—e_n be_v not_o in_o god_n covenant_n nor_o in_o câ—rists_n want_n of_o worth_n but_o in_o the_o person_n not_o run_v or_o not_o flee_v to_o christ_n as_o to_o the_o city_n of_o refuge_n and_o therefore_o they_o be_v not_o hear_v to_o plead_v for_o immunity_n by_o virtue_n of_o that_o satisfaction_n before_o the_o bar_n of_o god_n a_o second_o sort_n of_o uses_n be_v for_o exhort_v and_o encourage_v sinner_n to_o come_v to_o christ_n there_o be_v here_o then_o 1._o a_o clear_a ground_n to_o our_o our_o faith_n and_o a_o plain_a way_n open_v to_o heaven_n and_o a_o mighty_a encouragement_n to_o persuade_v sinner_n to_o lay_v hold_n on_o christ_n and_o to_o take_v this_o way_n for_o obtain_v of_o life_n this_o text_n open_v as_o it_o be_v the_o gate_n of_o the_o city_n of_o refuge_n and_o point_n out_o the_o way_n how_o to_o eshew_v the_o wrath_n which_o be_v to_o come_v there_o be_v a_o way_n here_o lay_v down_o in_o the_o wisdom_n justice_n go_v dness_n and_o grace_n of_o god_n which_o be_v make_v offer_n of_o in_o the_o gospel_n and_o since_o it_o be_v so_o we_o beseech_v you_o that_o you_o will_v not_o receive_v this_o grace_n in_o vain_a but_o see_v there_o be_v a_o covenant_n well_o order_v and_o sure_a a_o mediator_n and_o a_o ransom_n provide_v and_o a_o way_n lay_v down_o how_o to_o come_v to_o christ_n by_o faith_n let_v all_o of_o you_o who_o come_v under_o the_o conviction_n of_o sin_n and_o apprehension_n of_o wrath_n step_v to_o and_o close_o with_o he_o and_o plead_v for_o pardon_n by_o virtue_n of_o his_o wound_n and_o for_o heal_v through_o his_o stripe_n with_o respect_n to_o the_o covenant_n there_o be_v these_o four_o thing_n here_o that_o will_v serve_v to_o give_v ground_n for_o this_o application_n if_o we_o consider_v 1._o the_o great_a ground_n of_o faith_n that_o be_v here_o 2._o the_o great_a reason_n we_o have_v to_o make_v use_n of_o this_o ground_n 3._o the_o great_a encouragement_n we_o have_v so_o to_o do_v and_o 4_o the_o great_a necessity_n we_o have_v to_o make_v this_o application_n a_o little_a to_o each_o of_o these_o but_o we_o shall_v premit_fw-la one_o word_n to_o all_o and_o it_o be_v this_o that_o consider_v you_o be_v all_o in_o tryft_a term_n with_o god_n whether_o you_o live_v at_o a_o distance_n from_o he_o the_o uâ—e_v will_n by_o way_n of_o exhortation_n reach_v you_o or_o whether_o you_o be_v bring_v to_o great_a nearness_n under_o the_o sense_n of_o sin_n and_o have_v some_o seriousness_n in_o seek_v after_o god_n it_o will_v reach_v you_o for_o consolation_n in_o a_o word_n we_o will_v exhort_v all_o and_o it_o may_v convince_v some_o &_o comfort_v other_o but_o to_o the_o first_o thing_n we_o propose_v we_o declare_v and_o proclaim_v this_o as_o a_o true_a and_o faithful_a say_n that_o there_o be_v here_o a_o everlasting_a covenant_n wherein_o the_o salvation_n of_o the_o elect_n be_v conclude_v through_o christ_n satisfaction_n to_o justice_n for_o they_o and_o a_o way_n lay_v down_o for_o make_v peace_n betwixt_o god_n and_o all_o they_o that_o will_v thorough_o renounce_v their_o own_o righteousness_n and_o lay_v hold_v
of_o patience_n and_o obedience_n to_o they_o but_o the_o efficacy_n of_o his_o death_n be_v from_o the_o begin_n of_o the_o world_n he_o be_v still_o in_o that_o sense_n the_o lamb_n slay_v before_o his_o incarnation_n as_o well_o as_o since_o and_o if_o it_o be_v not_o meritorious_a in_o procure_v salvation_n to_o elect_a infant_n what_o influence_n or_o advantage_n can_v it_o have_v as_o to_o they_o either_o they_o be_v not_o take_v to_o heaven_n at_o all_o or_o they_o be_v take_v to_o heaven_n and_o yet_o not_o in_o the_o least_o oblige_v to_o christ_n for_o their_o be_v bring_v thither_o or_o if_o they_o be_v oblige_v to_o he_o it_o be_v certain_o by_o virtue_n of_o the_o merit_n of_o his_o suffering_n for_o expiate_v the_o sin_n of_o his_o people_n 4._o it_o be_v clear_a from_o this_o that_o in_o this_o same_o chapter_n and_o throughout_o the_o gospel_n all_o the_o benefit_n that_o come_v to_o god_n people_n as_o namely_o justification_n and_o pardon_n of_o sin_n they_o be_v attribute_v to_o this_o as_o the_o cause_n of_o they_o as_o vers_n 11._o by_o his_o knowledge_n shall_v my_o righteous_a servant_n justify_v many_o and_o if_o all_o the_o spiritual_a benefit_n that_o through_o faith_n in_o his_o blood_n to_o declare_v his_o righteousness_n and_o that_o he_o may_v be_v just_a and_o the_o justifier_n of_o they_o which_o believe_v in_o jesus_n by_o this_o god_n profession_n to_o deal_v with_o yet_o we_o have_v two_o sort_n that_o be_v socinian_n in_o heart_n among_o we_o 1._o these_o that_o secure_o sin_n on_o still_o and_o yet_o hope_v to_o get_v mercy_n and_o who_o will_v confess_v that_o they_o be_v sinner_n but_o that_o for_o make_v a_o amends_o they_o will_v pray_v and_o mend_v their_o life_n and_o they_o will_v speak_v of_o a_o number_n of_o thing_n but_o it_o may_v be_v not_o one_o word_n of_o christ_n or_o of_o his_o purchase_n or_o of_o their_o natural_a inclination_n to_o presume_v and_o to_o slight_a christ_n as_o if_o they_o have_v nothing_o yet_o to_o look_v to_o but_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n without_o a_o saviour_n or_o as_o if_o god_n have_v remove_v or_o will_v remove_v the_o curse_n threaten_v without_o a_o satisfaction_n so_o that_o christ_n satisfaction_n be_v not_o know_v nor_o rest_v on_o by_o the_o multitude_n of_o hypocrite_n that_o live_v in_o the_o visible_a church_n and_o this_o be_v easy_o prove_v from_o this_o that_o there_o be_v but_o very_o few_o who_o make_v use_v of_o he_o or_o stand_v in_o awe_n to_o sin_n if_o it_o be_v believe_v that_o justice_n require_v and_o will_v have_v heaven_n or_o be_v more_o in_o christ_n common_a and_o that_o so_o many_o mantain_n the_o hope_n of_o heaven_n without_o a_o due_a consideration_n of_o a_o satisfaction_n to_o justice_n by_o christ_n and_o without_o employ_v of_o he_o it_o declare_v plain_o that_o they_o be_v drunken_a with_o this_o error_n a_o second_o sort_n be_v these_o who_o be_v waken_v in_o conscience_n and_o sensible_a of_o sin_n yet_o be_v as_o heartless_a hesitate_v and_o hopeless_a to_o get_v peace_n through_o he_o as_o if_o he_o have_v not_o satisfy_v what_o else_o do_v the_o doubt_v and_o despondency_n of_o such_o for_o to_o that_o you_o must_v be_v deny_v and_o endeavour_v to_o make_v this_o sure_a and_o sick_a therefore_o let_v not_o this_o grace_n be_v offer_v to_o you_o in_o vain_a if_o you_o slight_a it_o christ_n etc._n etc._n now_o it_o can_v be_v eternal_a life_n to_o know_v by_o a_o mere_a notional_a or_o speculative_a knowledge_n for_o several_a reprobat_fw-la man_n exceed_v many_o believer_n in_o this_o but_o it_o be_v to_o know_v so_o as_o to_o believe_v in_o god_n and_o to_o rest_v on_o the_o mediator_n for_o life_n through_o he_o as_o it_o be_v 2_o pet._n 1.3_o he_o have_v give_v unto_o we_o all_o thing_n that_o pertain_v to_o life_n and_o godliness_n through_o the_o knowledge_n of_o he_o etc._n etc._n mere_a speculative_a knowledge_n can_v be_v the_o condition_n of_o the_o promise_n for_o they_o be_v make_v to_o the_o man_n that_o believe_v which_o believe_v take_v in_o not_o only_o the_o act_n of_o the_o mind_n know_v and_o assent_v but_o of_o the_o will_n consent_v and_o close_v with_o the_o object_n know_v and_o this_o will_v be_v the_o more_o clear_a from_o these_o two_o 1._o that_o by_o knowledge_n here_o be_v mean_v that_o by_o which_o justification_n be_v make_v we_o or_o apply_v to_o we_o and_o that_o which_o entitle_v we_o to_o it_o now_o mere_a speculative_a knowledge_n do_v not_o that_o but_o it_o be_v faith_n embrace_v he_o who_o be_v make_v know_v 2._o if_o we_o compare_v that_o which_o be_v attribute_v to_o knowledge_n here_o with_o that_o which_o be_v attribute_v to_o faith_n else_o where_o rom._n 5.1_o be_v justify_v by_o faith_n we_o have_v peace_n with_o god_n and_o rom._n 3.25_o he_o be_v the_o justifier_n of_o he_o which_o believe_v in_o jesus_n we_o will_v find_v that_o what_o be_v call_v knowledge_n here_o be_v call_v faith_n we_o be_v tell_v rom._n 9_o they_o take_v much_o pain_n to_o come_v by_o righteousness_n but_o they_o attain_v it_o not_o because_o they_o seek_v it_o not_o by_o faith_n but_o as_o it_o be_v by_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n for_o they_o stumble_v at_o that_o stumble_a stone_n when_o they_o have_v go_v part_n of_o the_o way_n as_o it_o be_v and_o come_v to_o the_o stone_n of_o believe_v there_o they_o fall_v and_o break_v their_o neck_n hence_o there_o be_v many_o who_o promise_v heaven_n to_o themselves_o and_o think_v that_o they_o have_v do_v something_o for_o it_o who_o yet_o iniquity_n of_o many_o even_o of_o all_o his_o own_o people_n yet_o not_o the_o iniquity_n of_o all_o man_n and_o woman_n but_o only_o the_o iniquity_n of_o they_o that_o shall_v be_v justify_v and_o
