into_o heaven_n he_o they_o in_o his_o book_n they_o he_o in_o the_o portraiture_n before_o his_o book_n but_o as_o be_v say_v before_o stage-work_n will_v not_o do_v it_o much_o less_o the_o justness_n of_o their_o cause_n wherein_o most_o frequent_o they_o die_v in_o a_o brutish_a fierceness_n with_o oath_n and_o other_o damn_v word_n in_o their_o mouth_n as_o if_o such_o have_v be_v all_o the_o oath_n they_o fight_v for_o which_o undoubted_o send_v they_o full_a sail_n on_o another_o voyage_n then_o to_o heaven_n in_o the_o mean_a while_o they_o to_o who_o god_n give_v victory_n never_o bring_v to_o the_o king_n at_o oxford_n the_o state_n of_o their_o conscience_n that_o he_o shall_v presume_v without_o confession_n more_o than_o a_o pope_n presume_v to_o tell_v abroad_o what_o conflict_n and_o accusation_n man_n who_o he_o never_o speak_v with_o have_v in_o their_o own_o thought_n we_o never_o read_v of_o any_o english_a king_n but_o one_o that_o be_v a_o confessor_n and_o his_o name_n be_v edward_n yet_o sure_o it_o pass_v his_o skill_n to_o know_v thought_n as_o this_o king_n take_v upon_o he_o but_o they_o who_o will_v not_o stick_v to_o slander_v man_n inward_a conscience_n which_o they_o can_v neither_o see_v nor_o know_v much_o less_o will_v care_v to_o slander_v outward_a action_n which_o they_o pretend_v to_o see_v though_o with_o sense_n never_o so_o vitiate_v to_o judge_v of_o his_o condition_n conquer_v and_o the_o manner_n of_o die_v on_o that_o side_n by_o the_o sober_a man_n that_o choose_v it_o will_v be_v his_o small_a advantage_n it_o be_v most_o notorious_a that_o they_o who_o be_v hot_a in_o his_o cause_n the_o most_o of_o they_o be_v man_n often_o drink_v then_o by_o their_o good_a will_n sober_a and_o very_o many_o of_o they_o so_o fight_v and_o so_o die_v and_o that_o the_o conscience_n of_o any_o man_n shall_v grow_v suspicious_a or_o be_v now_o convict_v by_o any_o pretension_n in_o the_o parliament_n which_o be_v now_o prove_v fall_v and_o unintended_a there_o can_v be_v no_o just_a cause_n for_o neither_o do_v they_o ever_o pretend_v to_o establish_v his_o throne_n without_o our_o liberty_n and_o religion_n nor_o religion_n without_o the_o word_n of_o god_n nor_o to_o judge_v of_o law_n by_o their_o be_v establish_v but_o to_o establish_v they_o by_o their_o be_v good_a and_o necessary_a he_o tell_v the_o world_n he_o often_o pray_v that_o all_o on_o his_o side_n may_v be_v as_o faithful_a to_o god_n and_o their_o own_o soul_n as_o to_o he_o but_o king_n above_o all_o other_o man_n have_v in_o their_o hand_n not_o to_o pray_v only_o but_o to_o do_v to_o make_v that_o prayer_n effectual_a he_o shall_v have_v govern_v as_o well_o as_o pray_v to_o pray_v and_o not_o to_o govern_v be_v for_o a_o monk_n and_o not_o a_o king_n till_o then_o he_o may_v be_v well_o assure_v they_o be_v more_o faithful_a to_o their_o lust_n and_o rapine_n then_o to_o he_o in_o the_o wont_a predication_n of_o his_o own_o virtue_n he_o go_v on_o to_o tell_v we_o that_o to_o conquer_v he_o never_o desire_v but_o only_o to_o restore_v the_o law_n and_o liberty_n of_o his_o people_n it_o have_v be_v happy_a then_o he_o have_v know_v at_o last_o that_o by_o force_n to_o restore_v law_n abrogate_a by_o the_o legislative_a parliament_n be_v to_o conquer_v absolute_o both_o they_o and_o law_n itself_o and_o for_o our_o liberty_n none_o ever_o oppress_v they_o more_o both_o in_o peace_n and_o war_n first_o like_o a_o master_n by_o his_o arbitrary_a power_n next_o as_o a_o enemy_n by_o hostile_a invasion_n and_o if_o his_o best_a friend_n fear_v he_o and_o he_o himself_o in_o the_o temptation_n of_o a_o absolute_a conquest_n it_o be_v not_o only_o pious_a but_o friendly_a in_o the_o parliament_n both_o to_o fear_v he_o and_o resist_v he_o since_o their_o not_o yield_v be_v the_o only_a mean_n to_o keep_v he_o out_o of_o that_o temptation_n wherein_o he_o doubt_v his_o own_o strength_n he_o take_v himself_o to_o be_v guilty_a in_o this_o war_n of_o nothing_o else_o but_o of_o confirm_v the_o power_n of_o some_o man_n thus_o all_o along_o he_o signify_v the_o parliament_n who_o to_o have_v settle_v by_o a_o act_n he_o count_v to_o be_v his_o only_a guiltiness_n so_o well_o he_o know_v that_o to_o continue_v a_o parliament_n be_v to_o raise_v a_o war_n against_o himself_o what_o be_v his_o action_n then_o and_o his_o government_n the_o while_n for_o never_o be_v it_o hear_v in_o all_o our_o story_n that_o parliament_n make_v war_n on_o their_o king_n but_o on_o their_o tyrant_n who_o modesty_n and_o gratitude_n be_v more_o want_v to_o the_o parliament_n then_o they_o to_o any_o of_o such_o king_n what_o he_o yield_v be_v his_o fear_n what_o he_o deny_v be_v his_o obstinacy_n have_v he_o yield_v more_o fear_n may_v perchance_o have_v save_v he_o have_v he_o grant_v less_o his_o obstinacy_n have_v perhaps_o the_o soon_o deliver_v we_o to_o review_v the_o occasion_n of_o this_o war_n will_v be_v to_o they_o never_o too_o late_o who_o will_v be_v warn_v by_o his_o example_n from_o the_o like_a evil_n but_o to_o wish_v only_o a_o happy_a conclusion_n will_v never_o expiate_v the_o fault_n of_o his_o unhappy_a beginning_n it_o be_v true_a on_o our_o side_n the_o sin_n of_o our_o life_n not_o seldom_o fight_v against_o we_o but_o on_o their_o side_n beside_o those_o the_o grand_a sin_n of_o their_o cause_n how_o can_v it_o be_v otherwise_o when_o he_o desire_v here_o most_o unreasonable_o and_o indeed_o sacrilegious_o that_o we_o shall_v be_v subject_a to_o he_o though_o not_o further_a yet_o as_o far_o as_o all_o of_o we_o may_v be_v subject_a to_o god_n to_o who_o this_o expression_n leave_v no_o precedency_n he_o who_o desire_v from_o man_n as_o much_o obedience_n and_o subjection_n as_o we_o may_v all_o pay_v to_o god_n desire_v not_o less_o then_o to_o be_v a_o god_n a_o sacrilege_n far_o worse_a than_o meddle_v with_o the_o bishop_n land_n as_o he_o esteem_v it_o his_o prayer_n be_v a_o good_a prayer_n and_o a_o glorious_a but_o glory_v be_v not_o good_a if_o it_o know_v not_o that_o a_o little_a leven_a leven_n the_o whole_a lump_n it_o shall_v have_v purge_v out_o the_o leven_a of_o untruth_n in_o tell_v god_n that_o the_o blood_n of_o his_o subject_n by_o he_o shed_v be_v in_o his_o just_a and_o necessary_a defence_n yet_o this_o be_v remarkable_a god_n have_v here_o so_o order_v his_o prayer_n that_o as_o his_o own_o lip_n acquit_v the_o parliament_n not_o long_o before_o his_o death_n of_o all_o the_o blood_n spill_v in_o this_o war_n so_o now_o his_o prayer_n unwitting_o draw_v it_o upon_o himself_o for_o god_n impute_v not_o to_o any_o man_n the_o blood_n he_o spill_v in_o a_o just_a cause_n and_o no_o man_n ever_o beg_v his_o not_o impute_v of_o that_o which_o he_o in_o his_o justice_n can_v not_o impute_v so_o that_o now_o whether_o purposely_o or_o unaware_o he_o have_v confess_v both_o to_o god_n and_o man_n the_o bloodguiltiness_n of_o all_o this_o war_n to_o lie_v upon_o his_o own_o head_n xx._n upon_o the_o reformation_n of_o the_o time_n this_o chapter_n can_v punctual_o be_v answer_v without_o more_o repetition_n than_o now_o can_v be_v excusable_a which_o perhaps_o have_v already_o be_v more_o humour_a than_o be_v needful_a as_o it_o present_v we_o with_o nothing_o new_a so_o with_o his_o exception_n against_o reformation_n pitiful_o old_a and_o totter_a with_o continual_a use_n not_o only_o in_o his_o book_n but_o in_o the_o word_n and_o write_n of_o every_o papist_n and_o popish_a king_n on_o the_o scene_n he_o thrust_v out_o first_o a_o antimasque_n of_o two_o bugbear_n novelty_n and_o perturbation_n that_o the_o ill_a look_n and_o noise_n of_o those_o two_o may_v as_o long_o as_o possible_a drive_v off_o all_o endeavour_n of_o a_o reformation_n thus_o seek_v pope_n adrian_n by_o represent_v the_o like_a vain_a terror_n to_o divert_v and_o that_o high_a court_n and_o by_o such_o a_o one_o command_v as_o make_v they_o no_o less_o doubtful_a of_o the_o guard_n itself_o which_o they_o therefore_o upon_o some_o ill_a effect_n thereof_o first_o find_v discharge_v deem_v it_o more_o safe_a to_o sit_v free_a though_o without_o a_o guard_n in_o open_a danger_n then_o enclose_v with_o a_o suspect_a safety_n the_o people_n therefore_o lest_o their_o worthy_a and_o most_o faithful_a patriot_n who_o have_v expose_v themselves_o for_o the_o public_a and_o who_o they_o see_v now_o leave_v naked_a shall_v want_v aid_n or_o be_v desert_v power_n in_o the_o first_o place_n and_o before_o the_o consideration_n of_o any_o right_n belong_v to_o the_o subject_a we_o expect_v therefore_o something_o more_o that_o must_v distinguish_v free_a government_n from_o slavish_a but_o in_o stead_n of_o that_o this_o king_n though_o ever_o talk_v and_o protest_v as_o smooth_a as_o now_o suffer_v it_o in_o his_o own_o hear_n to_o be_v preach_v when_o the_o parliament_n and_o in_o they_o the_o people_n have_v consent_v to_o divers_a law_n and_o according_a to_o our_o ancient_a right_n demand_v they_o he_o take_v upon_o he_o to_o have_v a_o though_o brief_o in_o regard_n so_o much_o on_o this_o subject_n have_v be_v write_v late_o it_o happen_v once_o as_o we_o find_v in_o esdras_n and_o josephus_n author_n not_o less_o believe_v than_o any_o under_o sacred_a to_o be_v a_o great_a and_o solemn_a debate_n in_o the_o court_n of_o darius_n what_o thing_n be_v to_o be_v count_v strong_a of_o all_o other_o he_o that_o can_v resolve_v this_o in_o reward_n of_o his_o excel_a wisdom_n shall_v be_v clad_v in_o purple_a drink_v in_o gold_n sleep_n on_o a_o bed_n of_o gold_n and_o sit_v next_o darius_n none_o but_o they_o doubtless_o who_o be_v repute_v wise_a have_v the_o question_n propound_v to_o they_o who_o after_o some_o respite_n give_v they_o by_o the_o king_n to_o consider_v in_o full_a assembly_n of_o all_o his_o lord_n and_o grave_a counsellor_n return_v several_o what_o they_o think_v the_o first_o hold_v that_o wine_n be_v strong_a another_o that_o the_o king_n be_v strong_a but_o zorobabel_n prince_n of_o the_o captive_a jew_n and_o heir_n to_o the_o crown_n of_o judah_n be_v one_o of_o they_o prove_v woman_n to_o be_v strong_a than_o the_o king_n for_o that_o he_o himself_o have_v see_v a_o concubine_n take_v his_o crown_n from_o off_o his_o head_n to_o set_v it_o upon_o her_o own_o and_o other_o beside_o he_o have_v late_o see_v the_o like_a feat_n do_v and_o not_o in_o jest_n yet_o he_o prove_v on_o and_o it_o be_v so_o yield_v by_o the_o king_n himself_o &_o all_o his_o sage_n that_o neither_o wine_n nor_o woman_n nor_o the_o king_n but_o truth_n of_o all_o other_o thing_n be_v the_o strong_a for_o i_o though_o neither_o ask_v nor_o in_o a_o nation_n that_o give_v such_o reward_n to_o wisdom_n i_o shall_v pronounce_v my_o sentence_n somewhat_o different_a from_o zorobabel_n and_o shall_v defend_v that_o either_o truth_n and_o justice_n be_v all_o one_o for_o truth_n be_v but_o justice_n in_o our_o knowledge_n and_o justice_n be_v but_o truth_n in_o our_o practice_n and_o he_o indeed_o so_o explain_v himself_o in_o say_v that_o with_o truth_n be_v no_o accept_n of_o person_n which_o be_v the_o property_n of_o justice_n or_o else_o if_o there_o be_v any_o odds_o that_o justice_n though_o not_o strong_a than_o truth_n yet_o by_o her_o office_n be_v to_o put_v forth_o and_o exhibit_v more_o strength_n in_o the_o affair_n of_o mankind_n for_o truth_n be_v proper_o no_o more_o than_o contemplation_n and_o her_o utmost_a efficiency_n be_v but_o teach_v but_o justice_n in_o her_o very_a essence_n be_v all_o strength_n and_o activity_n and_o have_v a_o sword_n put_v into_o her_o hand_n to_o use_v against_o all_o violence_n and_o oppression_n on_o the_o earth_n she_o it_o be_v most_o true_o who_o accept_v no_o person_n and_o exempt_v none_o from_o the_o severity_n of_o her_o stroke_n she_o never_o suffer_v injury_n to_o prevail_v but_o when_o fashood_n first_o prevail_v over_o truth_n and_o that_o also_o be_v a_o kind_n of_o justice_n do_v on_o they_o who_o be_v so_o delude_v though_o wicked_a king_n and_o tyrant_n counterfeit_v her_o sword_n as_o some_o do_v that_o buckler_n fable_v to_o fall_v from_o heaven_n into_o the_o capitol_n yet_o she_o communicate_v her_o power_n to_o none_o but_o such_o as_o like_v herself_o be_v just_a or_o at_o least_o will_v do_v justice_n for_o it_o be_v extreme_a partiality_n and_o injustice_n the_o flat_a denial_n and_o overthrow_n of_o herself_o to_o put_v she_o own_o authentic_a sword_n into_o the_o hand_n of_o a_o unjust_a and_o wicked_a man_n or_o so_o far_o to_o accept_v and_o exalt_v one_o mortal_a person_n above_o his_o equal_n that_o he_o alone_o shall_v have_v the_o punish_n of_o all_o other_o man_n transgress_v and_o not_o receive_v like_o punishment_n from_o man_n when_o he_o himself_o shall_v be_v find_v the_o high_a transgressor_n we_o may_v conclude_v therefore_o that_o justice_n above_o all_o other_o thing_n be_v and_o aught_o to_o be_v the_o strong_a she_o be_v the_o strength_n the_o kingdom_n the_o power_n and_o majesty_n of_o all_o age_n truth_n herself_o will_v subscribe_v to_o this_o though_o darius_n and_o all_o the_o monarch_n of_o the_o world_n shall_v king_n from_o which_o the_o strength_n and_o supreme_a sword_n of_o justice_n have_v deliver_v they_o i_o shall_v have_v do_v a_o work_n not_o much_o inferior_a to_o that_o of_o zorobabel_n who_o by_o well_o praise_v and_o extol_v the_o force_n of_o truth_n in_o that_o contemplative_a strength_n conquer_v darius_n and_o free_v his_o country_n and_o the_o people_n of_o god_n from_o the_o captivity_n of_o babylon_n which_o i_o shall_v yet_o not_o despair_v to_o do_v if_o they_o in_o this_o land_n who_o mind_n be_v yet_o captive_a be_v but_o as_o ingenuous_a to_o acknowledge_v the_o strength_n and_o supremacy_n of_o justice_n as_o that_o heathen_a king_n be_v to_o confess_v the_o strength_n of_o truth_n or_o let_v they_o but_o as_o he_o do_v grant_v that_o and_o they_o will_v soon_o perceive_v that_o truth_n resign_v all_o her_o outward_a strength_n to_o justice_n justice_n therefore_o must_v needs_o be_v strong_a both_o in_o she_o own_o and_o in_o the_o strength_n of_o truth_n but_o if_o a_o king_n may_v do_v among_o man_n whatsoever_o be_v his_o will_n and_o pleasure_n and_o notwithstanding_o be_v unaccountable_a to_o man_n then_o contrary_a to_o this_o magnify_v wisdom_n of_o zorobabel_n neither_o truth_n nor_o justice_n but_o the_o king_n be_v strong_a of_o all_o other_o thing_n which_o that_o persian_a monarch_n himself_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o all_o his_o pride_n
