natural_a enmity_n and_o rebellion_n of_o their_o own_o heart_n and_o the_o necessity_n of_o receive_v those_o from_o heaven_n and_o therefore_o in_o the_o use_n of_o all_o other_o mean_n to_o be_v most_o dependent_a on_o that_o influence_n and_o most_o in_o that_o mean_n which_o open_v the_o heart_n most_o to_o that_o influence_n and_o draw_v it_o down_o upon_o thâ—_n heartâ—_n and_o that_o be_v prayer_n of_o all_o the_o evil_n of_o our_o corrupt_a nature_n there_o be_v none_o more_o connatural_a and_o universal_a than_o pride_n the_o grand_a wickedness_n self-exalting_a in_o our_o own_o and_o other_o opinion_n though_o i_o will_v not_o contest_v what_o be_v the_o first_o step_n in_o that_o complicate_v first_o sin_n yet_o certain_o this_o of_o pride_n be_v one_o a_o main_a ingredient_n in_o it_o that_o which_o the_o unbelief_n conceive_v go_v before_o and_o the_o disobedience_n follow_v after_o be_v both_o servant_n to_o and_o ever_o since_o it_o stick_v still_o deep_a in_o our_o nature_n and_o st._n augustine_n say_v true_o that_o that_o first_o overcome_v man_n be_v the_o last_o he_o overcome_v some_o sin_n comparative_o may_v die_v before_o we_o but_o this_o have_v life_n in_o it_o sensible_o as_o long_o as_o we_o be_v as_o the_o heart_n of_o all_o the_o first_o live_v and_o the_o last_o die_v and_o have_v this_o advantage_n that_o whereas_o other_o sin_n be_v foment_v by_o one_o another_o this_o feed_v even_o on_o virtue_n and_o grace_n as_o a_o moth_n that_o breed_v in_o they_o and_o consume_v they_o even_o in_o the_o fine_a of_o they_o if_o it_o be_v not_o careful_o look_v to_o this_o hydra_n as_o one_o head_n of_o it_o be_v cut_v off_o another_o rises_z up_o it_o will_v secret_o cleave_v to_o the_o best_a action_n and_o prey_n upon_o they_o and_o therefore_o so_o much_o need_v that_o we_o continual_o watch_v and_o fight_v and_o pray_v against_o it_o and_o be_v restless_a in_o the_o pursuit_n daily_o seek_v to_o gain_v further_o in_o real_a and_o deep_a humiliation_n to_o be_v nothing_o and_o desire_v to_o be_v nothing_o not_o only_o bear_v but_o to_o love_v our_o own_o abasement_n and_o the_o thing_n that_o procure_v and_o help_v it_o to_o take_v pleasure_n in_o they_o so_o far_o as_o may_v be_v without_o sâ—n_n yea_o even_o of_o our_o sinful_a fail_n when_o they_o be_v discover_v to_o love_v the_o bring_n low_o of_o ourselves_o by_o they_o while_o we_o hate_v and_o grieve_v for_o the_o sin_n of_o they_o and_o above_o all_o to_o watch_v ourselves_o in_o our_o best_a thing_n that_o self_n get_v not_o in_o or_o if_o it_o break_v in_o or_o steal_v in_o at_o any_o time_n that_o it_o be_v present_o find_v out_o and_o cast_v out_o again_o to_o have_v that_o establish_v within_o we_o to_o do_v all_o for_o god_n to_o to_o take_v this_o lesson_n from_o he_o and_o be_v it_o not_o most_o reasonable_a he_o the_o most_o fair_a the_o most_o excellent_a and_o complete_a of_o all_o man_n and_o yet_o the_o most_o humble_a he_o more_o than_o a_o man_n and_o yet_o willing_o become_v in_o some_o sort_n less_o than_o a_o man_n as_o it_o be_v express_v a_o worm_n and_o no_o man_n and_o when_o majesty_n itself_o empty_v itself_o and_o descend_v so_o low_a shall_v a_o worm_n swell_v and_o be_v high_a conceit_v then_o consider_v it_o be_v for_o we_o all_o his_o humble_v to_o expiate_v our_o pride_n and_o therefore_o the_o more_o just_a that_o we_o follow_v a_o pattern_n which_o be_v both_o so_o great_a in_o itself_o and_o so_o near_o concern_v we_o o_o humility_n the_o virtue_n of_o christ_n that_o which_o he_o so_o peculiar_o espouse_v how_o do_v thou_o confound_v the_o vanity_n of_o our_o pride_n 2._o consider_v the_o safety_n of_o grace_n under_o this_o clothing_n it_o be_v that_o which_o keep_v it_o unexpose_v to_o a_o thousand_o hazard_n humility_n do_v grace_n no_o prejudice_n in_o cover_v it_o but_o indeed_o shelter_n it_o from_o violence_n and_o wrong_a therefore_o they_o do_v just_o call_v the_o wind_n without_o a_o cover_n 3._o consider_v the_o increase_n of_o grace_n by_o it_o and_o that_o be_v here_o express_v the_o perfect_a enmity_n against_o pride_n and_o bounty_n towards_o humility_n he_o reâ—isteth_v the_o proud_a and_o give_v grace_n to_o the_o humble_a he_o resist_v single_v it_o out_o for_o his_o grand_a enemy_n and_o set_v himself_o in_o battle_n against_o it_o
