and_o there_o may_v be_v good_a reason_n for_o it_o i_o have_v hear_v that_o there_o be_v bring_v a_o petition_n to_o some_o privy_a counselor_n with_o a_o thousand_o hand_n to_o it_o and_o be_v bring_v only_o with_o six_o man_n they_o be_v answer_v that_o they_o six_o may_v write_v those_o thousand_o hand_n if_o there_o be_v a_o thousand_o that_o join_v in_o the_o petition_n why_o do_v they_o not_o come_v too_o and_o we_o hear_v it_o object_v but_o the_o other_o day_n in_o this_o house_n against_o the_o minister_n petition_v that_o there_o be_v indeed_o seven_o or_o eight_o hundred_o name_n to_o it_o but_o two_o hand_n only_o therefore_o it_o be_v not_o without_o cause_n that_o a_o considerable_a number_n shall_v come_v with_o a_o petition_n sign_v by_o so_o many_o but_o for_o any_o disorder_n in_o their_o carriage_n i_o see_v none_o for_o upon_o a_o intimation_n in_o one_o word_n from_o this_o house_n they_o forthwith_o retire_v to_o their_o dwelling_n as_o for_o the_o subject_a matter_n of_o the_o petition_n three_o exception_n be_v take_v against_o it_o first_o that_o divers_a thing_n be_v contemptible_a in_o it_o as_o that_o about_o ovid_n de_fw-fr amore_n set_v forth_o in_o english_a and_o other_o such_o thing_n second_o that_o in_o many_o thing_n their_o discourse_n be_v altogether_o irrational_a for_o that_o they_o argue_v from_o personal_a fault_n of_o bishop_n against_o the_o office_n itself_o of_o bishop_n and_o in_o other_o thing_n argue_v from_o effect_n that_o proceed_v from_o it_o by_o accident_n as_o if_o they_o do_v fly_v out_o of_o it_o and_o in_o the_o last_o place_n that_o their_o prayer_n and_o conclusion_n be_v bold_a and_o presumptuous_a desire_v so_o bold_o a_o abolition_n of_o stand_a law_n to_o the_o first_o i_o answer_v that_o some_o thing_n may_v seem_v contemptible_a in_o themselves_o which_o be_v not_o so_o in_o their_o cause_n nor_o in_o their_o effect_n as_o the_o suffering_n of_o such_o lascivious_a pamphlet_n to_o be_v print_v and_o publish_v when_o other_o profitable_a writing_n be_v suppress_v do_v discover_v a_o principle_n that_o looseness_n and_o prophanesse_n which_o will_v help_v to_o bring_v in_o superstition_n be_v more_o suitable_a to_o their_o hierarchy_n than_o the_o contrary_n which_o make_v they_o connive_v at_o such_o thing_n as_o be_v apt_a to_o produce_v looseness_n and_o lewdness_n and_o this_o be_v no_o contemptible_a effect_n nor_o do_v it_o proceed_v from_o a_o contemptible_a cause_n in_o the_o next_o place_n for_o that_o which_o seem_v irrational_a in_o the_o way_n of_o their_o discovery_n divers_a thing_n may_v seem_v to_o be_v personal_a fault_n which_o indeed_o be_v derive_v unto_o the_o person_n from_o the_o office_n or_o from_o the_o circumstance_n thereof_o i_o mean_v their_o revenue_n and_o dignity_n on_o the_o one_o side_n and_o the_o ceremony_n on_o the_o other_o side_n for_o most_o of_o the_o thing_n complain_v of_o as_o silence_v and_o thrust_v out_o of_o godly_a and_o painful_a preacher_n bring_v in_o innovation_n in_o doctrine_n and_o worship_n and_o the_o like_a although_o they_o may_v seem_v personal_a and_o accidental_a fault_n yet_o if_o we_o follow_v they_o to_o their_o last_o resort_n we_o shall_v find_v that_o their_o worldly_a wealth_n and_o dignity_n stir_v they_o up_o to_o do_v this_o that_o their_o sole_a and_o arbitrary_a power_n over_o the_o clergy_n and_o in_o matter_n ecclesiastical_a enable_v they_o to_o effect_v it_o and_o the_o ceremony_n both_o new_a and_o old_a serve_v as_o instrument_n and_o mean_n whereby_o they_o effect_v it_o in_o the_o last_o place_n that_o their_o prayer_n in_o the_o conclusion_n of_o their_o petition_n be_v bold_a or_o presumptuous_a i_o do_v not_o see_v there_o be_v any_o reason_n so_o to_o esteem_v of_o it_o for_o if_o they_o have_v take_v upon_o they_o to_o have_v alter_v any_o thing_n upon_o their_o own_o authority_n or_o have_v imperious_o require_v the_o parliament_n to_o burdensome_a unto_o they_o and_o that_o of_o the_o parliament_n where_o and_o wherein_o only_o old_a law_n may_v be_v repeal_v and_o new_a law_n may_v be_v make_v they_o come_v in_o the_o right_a manner_n to_o their_o right_n and_o proper_a place_n and_o therefore_o have_v do_v nothing_o bold_o or_o presumptuous_o but_o orderly_o and_o regular_o and_o therefore_o ought_v not_o to_o receive_v any_o check_n or_o discouragement_n in_o the_o way_n that_o they_o have_v take_v now_o sir_n concern_v the_o government_n of_o the_o church_n by_o arch-bishop_n bishop_n etc._n etc._n which_o also_o of_o bishop_n i_o shall_v apply_v my_o discourse_n particular_o to_o that_o point_n but_o first_o i_o shall_v crave_v leave_n to_o say_v a_o word_n or_o two_o in_o answer_n to_o what_o have_v be_v allege_v for_o the_o credit_n of_o the_o government_n by_o bishop_n first_o that_o it_o be_v as_o ancient_a as_o christian_a religion_n and_o that_o it_o have_v continue_v ever_o since_o the_o time_n work_n to_o devise_v and_o do_v mischief_n against_o our_o kirk_n and_o country_n no_o other_o cause_n of_o his_o malice_n can_v we_o conceive_v but_o first_o his_o pride_n and_o supercilious_a disdain_n of_o the_o kirk_n of_o scotland_n which_o in_o his_o opinion_n declare_v by_o his_o speech_n have_v not_o in_o it_o almost_o any_o thing_n of_o a_o kirk_n although_o the_o reform_a kirk_n and_o many_o worthy_a divine_n of_o england_n have_v give_v ample_a testimony_n to_o the_o reformation_n of_o the_o kirk_n of_o scotland_n second_o our_o open_a opposition_n against_o the_o dangerous_a innovation_n of_o religion_n intend_v and_o very_o far_o promove_v in_o all_o his_o majesty_n dominion_n of_o which_o he_o have_v show_v himself_o in_o his_o own_o way_n no_o less_o when_o he_o find_v that_o the_o reformation_n begin_v in_o scotland_n do_v stand_v in_o his_o way_n he_o leave_v no_o mean_n unassay_v to_o rub_v disgrace_n upon_o we_o and_o our_o cause_n the_o remedy_n be_v provide_v and_o for_o remedy_n suggest_v his_o own_o wicked_a invention_n to_o present_v unto_o he_o and_o his_o own_o wicked_a council_n a_o petition_n which_o he_o cause_v to_o be_v
