that_o the_o life_n of_o a_o judge_n or_o magistrate_n be_v sincere_a and_o virtuous_a for_o as_o he_o judge_v open_o so_o shall_v he_o be_v judge_v of_o the_o people_n several_o not_o only_a in_o matter_n of_o weight_n and_o importance_n but_o in_o those_o of_o small_a consequence_n for_o always_o the_o rude_a people_n will_v find_v somewhat_o to_o reform_v as_o the_o lacedaemonian_n murmur_v at_o their_o lawmaker_n lycurgus_n for_o that_o he_o go_v always_o hold_v down_o his_o head_n the_o venetian_n defame_v wise_a cato_n in_o his_o eat_n and_o account_v pompeius_n uncivil_a for_o that_o he_o will_v scratch_v with_o one_o finger_n only_o yet_o these_o be_v but_o few_o in_o comparison_n of_o other_o good_a man_n that_o the_o common_a sort_n have_v persecute_v banish_a and_o in_o the_o end_n put_v to_o death_n if_o that_o great_a orator_n demosthenes_n be_v alive_a he_o can_v say_v some_o what_o who_o after_o he_o have_v a_o long_a time_n be_v a_o just_a and_o faithful_a governor_n of_o the_o commonwealth_n of_o athens_n be_v in_o the_o end_n without_o cause_n unjust_o banish_v moses_n and_o many_o other_o holy_a man_n have_v so_o many_o time_n taste_v the_o fury_n of_o the_o common_a people_n that_o if_o they_o be_v this_o day_n live_v they_o will_v pour_v out_o most_o grievous_a complaint_n against_o they_o now_o we_o have_v show_v and_o set_v forth_o the_o misery_n that_o procee_v from_o common_a people_n so_o must_v we_o in_o like_a sort_n put_v into_o the_o balance_n the_o error_n and_o corruption_n that_o be_v find_v in_o wicked_a judge_n of_o the_o which_o sort_n some_o be_v corrupt_v with_o fear_n for_o such_o fear_n they_o have_v that_o rather_o than_o they_o will_v displease_v a_o prince_n or_o a_o great_a lord_n they_o will_v violate_v justice_n like_o pilate_n that_o condemn_v christ_n for_o fear_n that_o he_o have_v to_o displease_v the_o emperor_n tiberius_n other_o magistrate_n be_v corrupt_v by_o love_n as_o be_v herod_n who_o for_o to_o please_v the_o foolish_a love_n of_o a_o damsel_n that_o dance_v condemn_v to_o death_n saint_n john_n baptist_n although_o he_o know_v he_o be_v just_a and_o innocent_a some_o be_v many_o time_n corrupt_v by_o hatred_n as_o be_v the_o chief_a priest_n that_o condemn_a saint_n paul_n to_o be_v stone_v to_o death_n though_o he_o deserve_v it_o not_o some_o magistrate_n be_v corrupt_v by_o silver_n and_o gold_n and_o other_o gift_n and_o present_n as_o be_v the_o child_n of_o the_o prophet_n samuel_n and_o this_o disease_n be_v so_o contagious_a that_o i_o fear_v at_o this_o day_n many_o be_v infect_v with_o it_o they_o all_o love_v reward_n say_v the_o prophet_n they_o all_o seek_v for_o gift_n they_o do_v not_o right_a to_o the_o orphan_n and_o the_o widow_n complaint_n come_v not_o before_o they_o and_o in_o a_o other_o place_n woe_n be_v to_o you_o that_o be_v corrupt_v by_o money_n by_o hatred_n or_o love_n and_o which_o judge_v the_o good_a to_o be_v evil_a and_o the_o evil_a good_a make_v the_o light_a darkness_n and_o the_o darkness_n light_n woe_n be_v to_o you_o that_o have_v not_o respect_n to_o the_o desert_n of_o thing_n but_o to_o the_o desert_n of_o man_n that_o regard_n not_o equity_n but_o gift_n that_o be_v give_v that_o regard_n not_o justice_n but_o money_n you_o be_v diligent_a in_o rich_a man_n cause_n but_o you_o defer_v the_o cause_n of_o the_o poor_a you_o be_v to_o they_o most_o cruel_a and_o rigorous_a judge_n but_o unto_o the_o rich_a kind_n and_o tractable_a the_o prophet_n jeremy_n cry_v out_o against_o wicked_a judge_n and_o say_v they_o be_v magnify_v and_o become_v rich_a they_o have_v leave_v the_o orphan_n and_o have_v not_o do_v justice_n for_o the_o poor_a shall_v not_o i_o therefore_o punish_v these_o thing_n say_v the_o lord_n and_o my_o soul_n take_v vengeance_n on_o such_o manner_n of_o people_n hear_v also_o the_o sentence_n that_o saint_n james_n pronounce_v against_o they_o at_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n you_o have_v condemn_v and_o kill_v the_o just_a you_o have_v live_v in_o wantonness_n in_o this_o world_n and_o take_v your_o ease_n now_o therefore_o say_v the_o lord_n of_o host_n weep_v and_o howl_v in_o your_o wretchedness_n that_o shall_v come_v upon_o you_o your_o garment_n be_v moth-eaten_a your_o gold_n and_o silver_n be_v canker_a and_o the_o rust_n thereof_o shall_v be_v a_o witness_n against_o you_o and_o it_o shall_v eat_v your_o flesh_n as_o it_o be_v fire_n for_o the_o complaint_n of_o the_o poor_a be_v ascend_v up_o to_o my_o throne_n these_o be_v the_o complaint_n that_o the_o prophet_n and_o apostle_n make_v against_o wicked_a judge_n and_o magistrate_n and_o likewise_o the_o censure_n that_o our_o good_a god_n have_v thunder_v against_o they_o and_o now_o i_o will_v speak_v of_o the_o misery_n of_o marriage_n with_o a_o discourse_n of_o the_o same_o chap._n vij_o of_o the_o praise_n of_o marriage_n and_o likewise_o the_o misery_n that_o ensue_v thereon_o there_o be_v no_o joy_n nor_o pleasure_n in_o the_o world_n which_o may_v be_v compare_v to_o marriage_n for_o there_o be_v such_o fellowship_n between_o the_o party_n couple_v that_o they_o seem_v two_o mind_n to_o be_v transform_v into_o one_o likewise_o both_o good_a fortune_n and_o bad_a be_v common_a to_o both_o their_o care_n equal_a and_o their_o joy_n equal_a and_o to_o be_v brief_a all_o thing_n be_v in_o common_a between_o they_o two_o if_o we_o account_v it_o pleasure_n to_o commit_v our_o secret_n to_o our_o friend_n and_o neighbour_n how_o much_o great_a be_v the_o joy_n when_o we_o may_v discover_v our_o thought_n to_o she_o that_o be_v join_v to_o we_o by_o such_o a_o knot_n of_o affinity_n that_o we_o put_v as_o much_o trust_n in_o she_o as_o in_o ourselves_o make_v she_o whole_o treasurer_n or_o faithful_a keeper_n of_o the_o secret_n of_o our_o mind_n what_o great_a witness_n of_o fervent_a love_n and_o undissoluble_a amity_n can_v there_o be_v than_o to_o forsake_v father_n mother_n sister_n and_o brother_n and_o general_o all_o their_o kindred_n till_o they_o become_v enemy_n to_o themselves_o for_o to_o follow_v a_o husband_n that_o do_v honour_n and_o reverence_v she_o and_o have_v all_o other_o thing_n in_o disdain_n she_o only_o cleave_v to_o he_o if_o he_o be_v rich_a she_o keep_v his_o good_n if_o he_o be_v poor_a she_o be_v companion_n with_o he_o in_o poverty_n if_o he_o be_v in_o prosperity_n his_o felicity_n be_v redouble_v in_o she_o if_o he_o be_v in_o adversity_n he_o bear_v but_o the_o one_o half_a of_o the_o grief_n and_o furthermore_o she_o comfort_v he_o assist_v and_o serve_v he_o if_o a_o man_n will_v remain_v solitary_a in_o his_o house_n his_o wife_n keep_v he_o company_n if_o he_o will_v go_v into_o the_o field_n she_o conduct_v he_o with_o her_o eye_n as_o far_o as_o she_o can_v see_v he_o she_o desire_v and_o honour_v he_o be_v absent_a she_o complain_v and_o sigh_v and_o wish_v his_o company_n be_v come_v home_o he_o be_v welcome_v and_o receive_v with_o the_o best_a show_n and_o token_n of_o love_n and_o for_o to_o speak_v truth_n it_o seem_v that_o a_o wife_n be_v a_o gift_n from_o heaven_n grant_v to_o a_o man_n as_o well_o for_o the_o contentation_n of_o youth_n as_o the_o rest_n and_o solace_n of_o age_n nature_n can_v give_v we_o but_o one_o father_n and_o one_o mother_n but_o marriage_n present_v many_o in_o our_o child_n the_o which_o do_v reverence_n and_o honour_v we_o and_o be_v more_o dear_a unto_o we_o than_o our_o own_o self_n for_o be_v young_a they_o play_v prattle_n laugh_v and_o show_v we_o many_o pretty_a toy_n they_o prepare_v we_o a_o infinite_a number_n of_o pleasure_n and_o it_o seem_v that_o they_o be_v give_v we_o by_o nature_n to_o pass_v away_o part_n of_o our_o miserable_a life_n if_o we_o be_v afflict_v with_o age_n they_o show_v the_o duty_n of_o child_n close_o up_o one_o eye_n and_o bring_v we_o to_o the_o earth_n from_o whence_o we_o come_v they_o be_v our_o bone_n our_o flesh_n and_o blood_n for_o in_o see_v they_o we_o see_v ourselves_o the_o father_n behold_v his_o child_n may_v be_v well_o assure_v that_o he_o see_v their_o lively_a youth_n renew_v in_o their_o face_n in_o who_o we_o be_v almost_o regenerate_v and_o bear_v again_o in_o such_o sort_n that_o age_n be_v most_o grievous_a unto_o we_o behold_v the_o mirror_n and_o similitude_n of_o ourselves_o the_o which_o do_v make_v our_o memory_n almost_o immortal_a many_o be_v the_o joy_n and_o sweet_a pleasure_n in_o marriage_n which_o for_o brevity_n sake_n i_o pass_v over_o but_o if_o we_o do_v well_o consider_v it_o and_o weigh_v it_o in_o a_o just_a balance_n we_o shall_v find_v that_o among_o these_o rose_n be_v many_o thorn_n grow_v and_o the_o chief_a work_n of_o nature_n of_o all_o other_o creature_n be_v most_o miserable_a in_o his_o birth_n for_o both_o beast_n and_o bird_n be_v bring_v into_o the_o world_n either_o cover_v with_o hair_n feather_n or_o wool_n not_o so_o much_o as_o the_o seed_n and_o corn_n of_o the_o ground_n but_o nature_n have_v clothe_v they_o with_o ear_n and_o husk_n man_n only_o except_v for_o he_o be_v once_o come_v from_o the_o prison_n of_o his_o mother_n womb_n seem_v no_o other_o thing_n but_o the_o similitude_n of_o a_o poor_a worm_n that_o come_v creep_v out_o of_o the_o earth_n with_o what_o clothing_n be_v he_o cover_v make_v his_o entry_n into_o the_o palace_n of_o this_o world_n but_o only_o with_o blood_n where_o in_o he_o be_v bathe_v and_o cover_v the_o which_o signify_v no_o other_o thing_n but_o the_o image_n and_o figure_n of_o sin_n what_o be_v the_o first_o song_n that_o he_o sing_v at_o his_o come_n into_o the_o world_n but_o only_a wéeping_n &_o wail_n which_o be_v as_o messenger_n and_o foreshewer_n of_o his_o calamity_n to_o come_v the_o which_o because_o he_o can_v express_v in_o word_n he_o witness_v by_o tear_n likewise_o pitiful_a cry_n in_o the_o begin_n of_o monarch_n emperor_n and_o king_n and_o other_o that_o cause_n so_o many_o tragedy_n to_o happen_v in_o the_o world_n but_o now_o contrariwise_o the_o worm_n be_v he_o never_o so_o little_a as_o soon_o as_o nature_n have_v bring_v he_o out_o of_o the_o earth_n begin_v to_o crawl_v and_o creep_v and_o to_o seek_v for_o food_n the_o little_a chicken_n so_o soon_o as_o he_o be_v out_o of_o the_o shell_n be_v find_v clean_o and_o need_v not_o to_o be_v wash_v like_o unto_o man_n but_o run_v after_o the_o hen_n and_o know_v when_o he_o be_v call_v he_o pick_v and_o eat_v he_o fear_v the_o kite_n without_o prove_v before_o her_o malice_n he_o fly_v danger_n only_o guide_v by_o nature_n but_o behold_v man_n so_o soon_o as_o he_o be_v come_v into_o the_o world_n be_v like_a unto_o a_o little_a monster_n and_o a_o lump_n of_o flesh_n which_o will_v let_v himself_o to_o be_v eat_v of_o other_o beast_n if_o he_o be_v not_o see_v unto_o and_o die_v for_o hunger_n before_o he_o can_v find_v his_o mother_n breast_n and_o will_v as_o soon_o eat_v poison_n as_o good_a meat_n and_o handle_v hot_a from_o before_o he_o can_v discern_v the_o good_a from_o the_o evil_a yet_o for_o all_o this_o he_o name_v himself_o the_o prince_n of_o all_o other_o creature_n thus_o man_n be_v bring_v into_o this_o miserable_a world_n and_o plunge_v in_o the_o gulf_n of_o misery_n he_o than_o require_v to_o have_v norishment_n and_o clothing_n to_o comfort_v the_o infirmity_n of_o his_o nature_n the_o office_n of_o which_o be_v appoint_v to_o mother_n in_o consideration_n whereof_o nature_n have_v give_v they_o breast_n which_o be_v like_o two_o little_a bottle_n very_o proper_a and_o necessary_a for_o their_o sustenance_n but_o now_o to_o speak_v of_o the_o misery_n of_o man_n in_o his_o nurriture_n how_o many_o mother_n be_v there_o at_o this_o day_n in_o the_o world_n nay_o rather_o we_o may_v true_o call_v they_o cruel_a stepmother_n who_o have_v according_o to_o nature_n bring_v their_o child_n forth_o into_o the_o world_n &_o because_o they_o will_v not_o take_v a_o little_a pain_n to_o nourish_v they_o themselves_o they_o send_v they_o to_o sorry_a village_n to_o be_v nurse_v of_o strange_a &_o unknown_a nurse_n which_o oftentimes_o do_v change_v their_o child_n &_o bring_v home_o other_o in_o their_o stead_n yet_o for_o all_o this_o they_o will_v not_o be_v ashamed_a to_o hold_v a_o little_a dog_n in_o their_o arm_n rather_o than_o the_o fruit_n that_o be_v engender_v in_o their_o womb_n this_o inhuman_a practice_n be_v not_o use_v among_o beast_n be_v they_o never_o so_o brutish_a for_o their_o nature_n be_v such_o that_o they_o never_o put_v their_o young_a one_o in_o the_o keep_v of_o other_o though_o nature_n give_v they_o never_o so_o many_o but_o they_o nourish_v they_o themselves_o and_o be_v such_o zealous_a protector_n of_o their_o young_a one_o that_o they_o keep_v they_o almost_o always_o in_o their_o presence_n till_o such_o time_n as_o they_o can_v avoid_v danger_n and_o that_o which_o be_v more_o to_o be_v marvel_v at_o there_o rise_v a_o certain_a strife_n between_o the_o male_a and_o the_o female_a which_o of_o they_o shall_v be_v the_o keeper_n and_o for_o that_o intent_n they_o many_o time_n quarrel_n and_o fight_v one_o with_o another_o the_o which_o may_v be_v see_v not_o only_o in_o ape_n but_o also_o in_o bear_n which_o in_o nature_n be_v fierce_a and_o cruel_a yet_o they_o have_v so_o great_a affection_n to_o their_o young_a one_o that_o they_o be_v not_o only_o content_a to_o nourish_v they_o with_o their_o milk_n but_o as_o soon_o as_o they_o be_v bring_v forth_o have_v almost_o no_o form_n or_o fashion_n they_o lick_v they_o and_o polish_v they_o to_o make_v they_o more_o perfect_a likewise_o the_o little_a bird_n cover_v five_o or_o six_o under_o their_o wing_n &_o have_v neither_o grain_n nor_o other_o seed_n for_o their_o sustenance_n notwithstanding_o they_o spare_v neither_o art_n nor_o diligence_n wherewith_o nature_n have_v endue_v they_o for_o their_o nourishment_n it_o be_v therefore_o a_o true_a witness_n of_o humane_a misery_n in_o that_o child_n be_v force_v against_o nature_n to_o suck_v the_o milk_n of_o a_o strange_a woman_n and_o many_o time_n of_o such_o a_o one_o as_o may_v be_v find_v best_o cheap_a what_o corruption_n or_o deformity_n soever_o she_o have_v the_o which_o many_o time_n be_v so_o contagious_a to_o their_o child_n that_o it_o be_v better_o for_o they_o to_o be_v nourish_v by_o some_o bruit_n beast_n in_o the_o wilderness_n than_o to_o be_v put_v into_o the_o custody_n of_o such_o a_o nurse_n as_o for_o example_n the_o cruelty_n and_o infamous_a life_n of_o caligula_n the_o four_o emperor_n of_o rome_n be_v not_o impute_v to_o father_n or_o mother_n but_o to_o the_o nurse_n that_o give_v he_o suck_v which_o woman_n be_v so_o cruel_a and_o barbarous_a of_o herself_o that_o she_o rub_v the_o nipple_n of_o her_o breast_n with_o blood_n cause_v the_o child_n to_o who_o she_o give_v milk_n to_o suck_v they_o the_o which_o thing_n be_v so_o well_o practise_v of_o he_o that_o he_o do_v not_o only_o commit_v a_o infinite_a number_n of_o murver_n but_o many_o time_n lick_v his_o sword_n and_o dagger_n be_v bathe_v and_o stain_v in_o blood_n and_o wish_v that_o all_o the_o world_n have_v but_o one_o head_n to_o the_o end_n that_o with_o one_o blow_n he_o may_v behead_v they_o and_o then_o reign_v alone_o upon_o the_o earth_n see_v then_o that_o the_o child_n have_v not_o feel_v or_o suffer_v sorrow_n enough_o in_o his_o mother_n womb_n but_o as_o soon_o as_o he_o be_v bear_v there_o be_v prepare_v a_o new_a sorrow_n for_o he_o by_o the_o ingratitude_n of_o such_o mother_n which_o be_v so_o delicate_a and_o tender_a of_o
sweet_a shower_n of_o rain_n we_o shall_v find_v that_o there_o fall_v much_o hail_n but_o with_o reverence_n now_o i_o crave_v pardon_n of_o all_o virtuous_a woman_n that_o with_o patience_n i_o may_v discover_v my_o intent_n and_o that_o my_o presumption_n may_v not_o gain_v the_o least_o frown_n from_o their_o chaste_a brow_n for_o to_o the_o vicious_a i_o speak_v and_o not_o to_o they_o who_o breast_n harbour_v the_o liberal_a fountain_n of_o virtue_n and_o wisdom_n the_o athenian_n be_v a_o people_n much_o commend_v for_o their_o prudence_n and_o wisdom_n see_v that_o husband_n and_o wife_n can_v not_o agree_v because_o of_o a_o infinite_a number_n of_o dissension_n that_o chance_v between_o they_o be_v constrain_v to_o ordain_v certain_a magistrate_n in_o their_o country_n who_o they_o call_v reconciler_n of_o marry_a one_o the_o office_n of_o who_o be_v to_o set_v agreement_n between_o the_o husband_n and_o the_o wife_n the_o spartan_n and_o roman_n have_v also_o such_o like_a law_n and_o order_n among_o they_o so_o great_a be_v the_o insolence_n and_o rashness_n of_o some_o woman_n towards_o their_o husband_n in_o this_o age_n there_o be_v but_o few_o i_o think_v can_v bear_v patient_o the_o charge_n of_o marriage_n or_o can_v endure_v the_o unbridled_a rage_n of_o some_o woman_n and_o to_o speak_v truth_n without_o flattery_n if_o thou_o take_v her_o rich_a thou_o make_v thyself_o a_o bondslave_n for_o think_v to_o marry_v thy_o equal_a thou_o marry_v a_o command_a mistress_n if_o thou_o take_v her_o foul_a thou_o can_v not_o love_v she_o if_o thou_o take_v her_o fair_a it_o be_v a_o image_n at_o thy_o gate_n to_o bring_v thou_o company_n beauty_n be_v a_o tower_n that_o be_v assail_v of_o all_o the_o world_n &_o therefore_o it_o be_v a_o hard_a thing_n to_o keep_v that_o where_o every_o one_o seek_v to_o have_v the_o key_n then_o this_o be_v the_o conclusion_n riches_n cause_n a_o woman_n to_o be_v proud_a beauty_n make_v she_o suspect_v and_o hard_a favour_n cause_v she_o to_o be_v hate_v therefore_o hyponacte_v have_v taste_v the_o martyrdom_n of_o marriage_n say_v that_o there_o be_v but_o two_o good_a day_n in_o all_o the_o life_n of_o marriage_n whereof_o the_o one_o be_v the_o wedding_n day_n upon_o which_o be_v make_v good_a cheer_n the_o bride_n fresh_a and_o fair_a and_o of_o all_o pleasure_n the_o beginning_n be_v most_o delectable_a the_o other_o good_a day_n be_v when_o the_o woman_n die_v for_o then_o the_o husband_n be_v out_o of_o bondage_n and_o thraldom_n yet_o for_o all_o this_o a_o woman_n be_v to_o man_n a_o necessary_a evil_n and_o one_o who_o he_o can_v well_o live_v without_o see_v that_o there_o be_v nothing_o more_o hard_a to_o find_v in_o this_o world_n than_o a_o good_a woman_n a_o good_a mule_n and_o a_o good_a goat_n who_o be_v three_o unhappy_a beast_n and_o to_o conclude_v there_o be_v nothing_o more_o light_a than_o a_o woman_n tongue_n unbridled_a more_o pierce_a than_o her_o outrageous_a word_n more_o to_o be_v fear_v than_o her_o boldness_n more_o cruel_a than_o her_o malice_n nor_o more_o dangerous_a than_o her_o fury_n beside_o many_o other_o hurtful_a discommodity_n of_o their_o housewifry_n which_o for_o this_o time_n i_o pass_v over_o and_o so_o return_v to_o our_o former_a discourse_n chhp._n viij_o of_o the_o world_n general_a misery_n and_o the_o vice_n of_o all_o sort_n in_o the_o communality_n of_o all_o the_o misery_n that_o happen_v to_o man_n in_o this_o pilgrimage_n of_o woe_n these_o hereafter_o follow_v be_v the_o great_a of_o which_o nature_n herself_o have_v complain_v unto_o god_n who_o say_v that_o man_n for_o every_o vice_n have_v a_o cloak_n of_o virtue_n to_o cover_v it_o as_o for_o example_n those_o that_o wound_n and_o kill_v one_o another_o we_o call_v they_o hardy_a and_o strong_a and_o we_o say_v that_o they_o have_v a_o regard_n to_o honour_n and_o therefore_o deserve_v commendation_n they_o that_o violate_v woman_n and_o ravish_v virgin_n we_o call_v that_o bear_n of_o love_n those_o that_o be_v proud_a and_o seek_v by_o all_o unlawful_a mean_n to_o climb_v up_o to_o high_a dignity_n we_o call_v they_o honourable_a grave_a and_o man_n of_o ripe_a judgement_n those_o that_o be_v covetous_a and_o beguile_v their_o neighbour_n by_o crafty_a subtlety_n and_o invention_n and_o so_o in_o short_a time_n become_v rich_a those_o they_o call_v good_a husband_n and_o man_n that_o will_v seek_v to_o live_v beside_o many_o other_o vice_n which_o be_v shadow_v under_o the_o mantle_n of_o virtue_n the_o which_o be_v one_o principal_a cause_n that_o so_o many_o misery_n do_v fall_v upon_o the_o world_n and_o to_o speak_v truth_n the_o whole_a earth_n be_v drown_v in_o sin_n that_o it_o seem_v to_o be_v the_o sink_n wherein_o all_o the_o wickedness_n of_o the_o former_a age_n have_v be_v empty_v who_o ever_o see_v the_o sin_n of_o covetousness_n more_o deep_a root_v in_o the_o world_n than_o at_o this_o present_a day_n for_o all_o the_o city_n province_n and_o kingdom_n of_o the_o earth_n be_v very_a shop_n and_o storehouse_n of_o covetousness_n and_o avarice_n this_o be_v the_o world_n which_o the_o prophet_n do_v foreshow_v that_o man_n join_v house_n to_o house_n and_o land_n to_o land_n as_o though_o themselves_o will_v alone_o dwell_v upon_o the_o earth_n covetousness_n be_v the_o well_o spring_v of_o misery_n for_o from_o thence_o proceed_v war_n and_o destruction_n and_o the_o great_a effusion_n of_o blood_n with_o the_o which_o the_o earth_n be_v overflow_v from_o covetousness_n procee_v murder_n treason_n theft_n usury_n forswearing_n the_o corruption_n of_o witness_n and_o pervert_v of_o judgement_n from_o covetousness_n the_o tedious_a delay_n in_o law_n and_o linger_a of_o suit_n do_v proceed_v and_o to_o be_v short_a from_o thence_o come_v all_o wickedness_n this_o grievous_a sin_n be_v grow_v so_o familiar_a among_o man_n that_o many_o live_v without_o mercy_n in_o such_o sort_n that_o now_o we_o may_v see_v the_o street_n full_a of_o poor_a beggar_n naked_a and_o clad_v with_o poverty_n with_o a_o infinite_a number_n of_o banish_a woman_n drive_v out_o of_o their_o country_n bear_v their_o child_n in_o their_o arm_n want_v that_o which_o covetous_a man_n hoard_v up_o with_o such_o care_n that_o they_o make_v it_o their_o god_n and_o will_v rather_o let_v a_o poor_a body_n die_v at_o their_o gate_n than_o refresh_v he_o with_o food_n therefore_o let_v we_o now_o leave_v these_o wicked_a man_n idolater_n of_o their_o treasure_n with_o the_o covetous_a rich_a man_n mention_v in_o the_o holy_a scripture_n and_o speak_v of_o a_o other_o vice_n which_o be_v call_v envy_n the_o malady_n wherewith_o many_o mind_n in_o this_o new_a world_n be_v grievous_o afflict_v the_o time_n be_v now_o come_v that_o the_o whole_a earth_n be_v nothing_o but_o a_o very_a place_n of_o the_o envious_a a_o vice_n which_o be_v the_o old_a of_o all_o vice_n &_o have_v be_v use_v in_o the_o world_n infancy_n the_o experience_n thereof_o be_v approve_v in_o the_o first_o age_n of_o adam_n and_o the_o serpent_n in_o abel_n and_o cain_n in_o jacob_n and_o esau_n in_o joseph_n and_o his_o brethren_n in_o saul_n and_o david_n in_o hammon_n and_o mardocheus_n the_o which_o pursue_v not_o one_o another_o for_o their_o riches_n but_o for_o the_o envy_n that_o the_o one_o bear_v to_o the_o other_o but_o all_o this_o be_v nothing_o to_o the_o envy_n which_o be_v use_v among_o man_n at_o this_o day_n which_o wicked_a vice_n not_o only_o reign_v among_o the_o common_a sort_n but_o also_o among_o the_o high_a for_o when_o they_o be_v mount_v to_o the_o top_n of_o fortune_n wheel_n and_o think_v peaceable_o to_o enjoy_v the_o favour_n of_o prince_n behold_v sudden_o the_o envy_n of_o some_o other_o conspire_v against_o they_o and_o cause_v they_o to_o be_v disdain_v &_o cast_v out_o of_o favour_n therefore_o i_o think_v there_o be_v no_o other_o mean_n for_o to_o avoid_v envy_n but_o to_o avoid_v dignity_n and_o rule_n the_o reason_n be_v that_o we_o be_v the_o child_n of_o envy_n and_o he_o that_o leave_v most_o good_n leave_v most_o enuy._n for_o this_o cause_n the_o elder_n counsel_v the_o rich_a that_o they_o shall_v not_o dwell_v near_o the_o poor_a nor_o the_o poor_a near_o the_o rich_a for_o the_o one_o be_v envy_v for_o their_o wealth_n and_o the_o other_o for_o their_o poverty_n here_o will_v we_o now_o leave_v this_o grievous_a sin_n of_o envy_n and_o a_o little_a glance_n at_o the_o ambitious_a pride_n that_o reign_v among_o us._n who_o ever_o see_v such_o excessive_a pride_n in_o all_o estate_n as_o we_o see_v at_o this_o present_a whereby_o we_o may_v well_o name_v this_o world_n a_o world_n of_o glister_a gold_n of_o silver_n and_o velvet_n of_o purple_a of_o silk_n with_o the_o
