the_o more_o full_a handle_n of_o this_o point_n believe_v i_o will_v enter_v into_o the_o three_o branch_n of_o this_o first_o part_n that_o be_v to_o say_v what_o god_n require_v of_o they_o who_o thirst_n he_o will_v quench_v and_o that_o be_v that_o they_o come_v to_o he_o for_o it_o that_o be_v believe_v that_o he_o will_v do_v in_o deed_n as_o he_o promise_v even_o satisfy_v the_o soul_n of_o he_o that_o thirst_v with_o the_o thing_n that_o he_o desire_v and_o therefore_o with_o remission_n of_o sin_n and_o salvation_n if_o that_o be_v the_o thing_n he_o thirst_v after_o this_o faith_n be_v that_o which_o the_o prophet_n require_v when_o he_o speak_v of_o come_v require_v it_o of_o they_o that_o they_o come_v even_o as_o our_o saviour_n also_o in_o saint_n john_n mean_v the_o same_o by_o come_v to_o he_o where_o he_o make_v come_v and_o believe_v â—â—_o both_o one_o he_o that_o come_v to_o i_o shall_v not_o hunger_n and_o he_o that_o believe_v in_o i_o shall_v never_o thirst_v meaning_n he_o shall_v never_o want_v spiritual_a nourishment_n namely_o that_o which_o his_o soul_n long_v for_o who_o believe_v in_o he_o so_o that_o we_o see_v it_o be_v require_v here_o that_o the_o thirsty_a person_n who_o be_v by_o the_o prophet_n call_v out_o from_o all_o other_o to_o drink_v and_o to_o be_v refresh_v shall_v believe_v that_o god_n mean_v as_o he_o speak_v and_o will_v do_v it_o indeed_o which_o stand_v with_o great_a reason_n that_o they_o shall_v do_v so_o for_o although_o the_o lord_n bequeath_v and_o free_o grant_v it_o unto_o they_o yet_o if_o they_o weigh_v it_o not_o and_o so_o give_v no_o credit_n to_o it_o how_o can_v they_o be_v the_o better_a for_o it_o neither_o need_v they_o fear_v that_o they_o shall_v presume_v and_o be_v too_o bold_a in_o clasp_v about_o and_o believe_v it_o for_o while_o they_o desire_v it_o 8.33_o and_o god_n promise_v to_o grant_v they_o their_o desire_n who_o shall_v take_v it_o from_o they_o no_o if_o god_n will_v justify_v none_o shall_v be_v able_a to_o condemn_v believe_v and_o if_o you_o ask_v why_o will_v god_n have_v they_o believe_v it_o i_o say_v to_o the_o end_n they_o may_v see_v the_o love_a kindness_n of_o god_n towards_o they_o who_o have_v be_v so_o low_o bring_v by_o the_o sight_n of_o their_o unworthiness_n that_o be_v even_o to_o hell_n gate_n in_o their_o own_o persuasion_n shall_v the_o more_o wonder_n to_o see_v the_o height_n of_o glory_n that_o they_o be_v by_o he_o exalt_v to_o and_o this_o they_o believe_v and_o consider_v â—_o do_v as_o saint_n peter_n say_v love_v he_o and_o rejoice_v with_o joy_n unspeakable_a and_o glorious_a whereas_o otherwise_o they_o can_v do_v neither_o and_o do_v we_o not_o see_v by_o this_o that_o there_o be_v great_a reason_n why_o god_n require_v of_o all_o his_o that_o they_o shall_v believe_v in_o his_o son_n even_o that_o they_o may_v see_v his_o love_a kindness_n which_o be_v before_o hide_v from_o they_o and_o be_v make_v joyful_a thereby_o more_o than_o they_o can_v be_v bring_v unto_o by_o the_o voice_n of_o a_o angel_n they_o may_v love_v he_o and_o be_v zealous_a in_o his_o service_n which_o by_o no_o other_o mean_n they_o can_v be_v bring_v unto_o therefore_o let_v they_o labour_v above_o all_o thing_n that_o they_o may_v have_v this_o persuasion_n of_o god_n savour_n and_o let_v they_o see_v that_o they_o have_v no_o less_o than_o this_o unfeigned_a faith_n in_o they_o though_o weak_a because_o so_o great_a and_o weighty_a matter_n be_v thereby_o wrought_v and_o uphold_v in_o they_o but_o here_o one_o thing_n more_o i_o must_v add_v faith_n though_o afterward_o i_o shall_v say_v somewhat_o of_o it_o and_o that_o be_v how_o a_o man_n may_v prove_v that_o he_o have_v this_o faith_n see_v it_o be_v easy_o doubt_v of_o and_o most_o of_o all_o by_o they_o who_o have_v least_o cause_n and_o this_o proof_n of_o their_o faith_n and_o testimony_n thereof_o i_o think_v it_o most_o fit_a to_o stay_v they_o up_o withal_o that_o they_o may_v not_o waver_v as_o they_o who_o have_v it_o not_o shall_v do_v and_o must_v needs_o though_o they_o speak_v great_a word_n about_o it_o and_o i_o can_v brieflier_n nor_o more_o pithy_o do_v it_o then_o by_o tell_v they_o that_o if_o they_o hold_v fast_o this_o precious_a promise_n of_o salvation_n by_o christ_n they_o must_v know_v that_o they_o receive_v the_o spirit_n of_o sanctification_n also_o which_o cry_v in_o they_o abba_n father_n and_o sanctify_v they_o and_o more_o plain_o thus_o that_o as_o they_o desire_v the_o forgiveness_n of_o their_o sin_n they_o desire_v and_o endeavour_n after_o the_o reformation_n of_o their_o life_n and_o the_o wean_n of_o their_o heart_n from_o evil_a also_o and_o this_o where_o it_o be_v wrought_v that_o i_o say_v no_o more_o of_o it_o in_o this_o place_n shall_v ever_o prove_v that_o there_o be_v this_o effectual_a faith_n this_o i_o have_v say_v of_o this_o first_o part_n and_o the_o three_o branch_n thereof_o and_o namely_o of_o this_o one_o kind_n of_o their_o thirst_v for_o remission_n of_o sin_n and_o eternal_a life_n for_o there_o be_v other_o thirsting_n then_o for_o these_o as_o i_o give_v the_o reader_n to_o understand_v before_o whereof_o i_o will_v give_v you_o a_o taste_n though_o more_o brief_o in_o the_o next_o sermon_n see_v i_o have_v large_o handle_v this_o in_o the_o forementioned_a instance_n that_o it_o may_v give_v light_n to_o the_o reader_n that_o whatsoever_o good_a thing_n he_o thirst_v for_o he_o may_v be_v as_o sure_a that_o he_o shall_v obtain_v they_o the_o second_o sermon_n upon_o the_o same_o text_n life_n now_o to_o proceed_v where_o i_o leave_v we_o be_v to_o know_v that_o god_n people_n be_v never_o full_o satisfy_v while_o they_o wander_v here_o on_o earth_n but_o be_v ever_o thirst_v after_o one_o good_a thing_n or_o other_o or_o some_o new_a measure_n of_o grace_n whatsoever_o they_o have_v be_v satisfy_v in_o already_o for_o otherwise_o they_o can_v not_o be_v include_v among_o they_o to_o who_o this_o promise_n be_v make_v neither_o have_v they_o their_o part_n in_o it_o when_o it_o be_v say_v ho_o all_o you_o that_o thirst_n come_v to_o the_o water_n and_o drink_n from_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o some_o have_v attain_v to_o true_a faith_n yet_o as_o fervent_o desire_v to_o preserve_v and_o strengthen_v the_o same_o as_o they_o desire_v when_o they_o be_v before_o in_o great_a fear_n and_o doubt_v to_o have_v any_o measure_n at_o all_o thereof_o and_o so_o the_o lord_n require_v that_o we_o high_o esteem_v desire_v and_o long_o after_o the_o same_o and_o the_o salvation_n which_o we_o wait_v for_o thereby_o even_o as_o at_o the_o first_o acquaintance_n with_o they_o we_o do_v in_o like_a manner_n god_n faithful_a people_n know_v that_o he_o be_v as_o a_o flow_a fountain_n rich_a in_o all_o good_a thing_n and_o never_o draw_v dry_a they_o thirst_v still_o after_o other_o particular_a grace_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n when_o he_o have_v satisfy_v they_o with_o the_o former_a and_o namely_o hope_v love_n patience_n meekness_n humbleness_n strength_n to_o bear_v affliction_n and_o such_o like_a and_o he_o do_v no_o soon_o stir_v up_o in_o they_o the_o desire_n and_o longing_n after_o these_o but_o he_o do_v withal_o give_v they_o his_o word_n and_o promise_n that_o he_o will_v bestow_v the_o same_o upon_o they_o even_o as_o he_o here_o speak_v say_v he_o all_o you_o that_o thirst_n come_v to_o the_o water_n and_o drink_n and_o in_o like_a manner_n he_o speak_v in_o hosea_n 14.6.7_o when_o he_o have_v say_v that_o he_o will_v forgive_v all_o their_o iniquity_n and_o love_v they_o free_o he_o add_v i_o will_v be_v as_o the_o dew_n to_o israel_n he_o shall_v grow_v as_o the_o lily_n and_o fasten_v his_o root_n as_o the_o tree_n of_o lebanon_n his_o branch_n shall_v spread_v and_o his_o beauty_n shall_v be_v as_o the_o olive_n tree_n and_o his_o smell_n as_o lebanon_n by_o all_o which_o the_o lord_n mean_v that_o when_o his_o people_n turn_v to_o he_o and_o long_v for_o his_o mercy_n shall_v obtain_v it_o to_o cover_v their_o sin_n they_o shall_v as_o the_o dry_a ground_n thirst_v for_o the_o dew_n and_o rain_n and_o be_v satisfy_v therewith_o so_o shall_v they_o i_o say_v be_v refresh_v with_o the_o dew_n of_o his_o grace_n to_o grow_v up_o out_o of_o their_o old_a sin_n flourish_v in_o his_o church_n as_o the_o plant_n constant_o settle_v therein_o as_o the_o tree_n deep_o root_v and_o provoke_v other_o to_o follow_v and_o
many_o other_o of_o like_a sort_n which_o where_o they_o be_v entertain_v can_v it_o be_v choose_v but_o that_o iniquity_n shall_v abound_v there_o so_o that_o this_o second_o sort_n do_v also_o fill_v the_o world_n with_o sin_n and_o see_v this_o kind_n of_o people_n be_v so_o common_a every_o where_o that_o they_o go_v for_o honest_a man_n and_o good_a christian_n and_o they_o walk_v uncontrolled_a and_o unpunished_a and_o thereby_o be_v the_o less_o note_v to_o be_v so_o evil_a as_o they_o be_v the_o lord_n do_v oft_o take_v the_o matter_n into_o his_o own_o hand_n to_o detect_v and_o bewray_v they_o so_o as_o either_o they_o fall_v to_o some_o sin_n for_o which_o the_o magistrate_n take_v they_o in_o hand_n such_o be_v achan_n 24.10_o and_o he_o that_o blaspheme_v in_o leviticus_fw-la who_o both_o be_v put_v to_o death_n and_o thrust_v out_o from_o among_o their_o neighbour_n or_o else_o god_n punish_v their_o sin_n himself_o direct_o by_o let_v they_o lay_v violent_a hand_n on_o themselves_o as_o do_v ahitophel_n the_o three_o sort_n who_o cause_n iniquity_n to_o abound_v sort_n be_v the_o hypocrite_n proper_o so_o call_v who_o profess_v religion_n and_o take_v the_o word_n of_o god_n into_o their_o mouth_n but_o they_o hate_v to_o be_v reform_v and_o bold_o affirm_v that_o they_o know_v god_n 7.21_o but_o in_o their_o deed_n they_o deny_v he_o and_o say_v lord_n lord_n but_o do_v nothing_o less_o then_o go_v about_o to_o fulfil_v the_o will_n of_o the_o lord_n these_o cause_n the_o holy_a word_n of_o god_n to_o be_v ill_o speak_v of_o which_o they_o hear_v and_o talk_v of_o more_o than_o the_o most_o of_o other_o do_v and_o will_v not_o stick_v to_o commit_v sin_n the_o more_o bold_o under_o a_o colour_n and_o cloak_n of_o holiness_n which_o behaviour_n of_o they_o be_v a_o practice_n and_o common_a course_n of_o live_v with_o they_o so_o that_o daily_o much_o evil_n be_v wrought_v by_o they_o all_o that_o list_n may_v see_v that_o these_o also_o as_o the_o two_o former_a sort_n that_o i_o say_v no_o more_o of_o they_o as_o be_v so_o well_o know_v do_v cause_n iniquity_n to_o abound_v sort_n the_o four_o sort_n be_v they_o who_o be_v not_o proper_o call_v hypocrite_n with_o the_o former_a although_o hypocrisy_n bear_v much_o sway_n in_o they_o but_o they_o in_o many_o thing_n do_v obey_v god_n and_o the_o course_n of_o their_o life_n be_v much_o more_o frame_v after_o god_n word_n than_o all_o the_o former_a if_o they_o be_v put_v together_o also_o they_o do_v more_o straight_o urge_v good_a order_n in_o other_o as_o their_o place_n will_v give_v they_o leave_v &_o yet_o in_o some_o thing_n they_o will_v not_o be_v bring_v within_o compass_n but_o be_v wed_v to_o their_o will_n and_o know_v that_o they_o do_v ill_a some_o sin_n they_o entertain_v and_o take_v liberty_n to_o commit_v be_v not_o willing_a to_o search_v their_o heart_n nor_o to_o look_v into_o their_o way_n and_o so_o they_o deal_v also_o about_o faith_n they_o hold_v a_o confuse_a persuasion_n and_o hope_n that_o they_o shall_v be_v save_v but_o they_o can_v be_v bring_v to_o try_v it_o and_o therefore_o they_o be_v destitute_a both_o of_o it_o and_o good_a life_n now_o these_o also_o howsoever_o they_o come_v near_o a_o godly_a life_n then_o any_o of_o the_o former_a and_o that_o by_o many_o degree_n yet_o because_o they_o in_o some_o thing_n give_v themselves_o leave_v to_o offend_v and_o dishonour_n god_n and_o do_v not_o fear_v the_o lord_n with_o all_o their_o heart_n and_o in_o one_o thing_n as_o well_o as_o in_o another_o seek_v to_o please_v he_o therefore_o god_n abhor_v their_o sacrifice_n of_o praise_n and_o prayer_n and_o curse_v the_o obedience_n which_o they_o offer_v unto_o he_o and_o therefore_o the_o apostle_n s_o james_n have_v to_o deal_v with_o such_o people_n say_v unto_o they_o whosoever_o shall_v keep_v the_o whole_a law_n 2.10.11_o and_o yet_o fail_v in_o one_o point_n he_o be_v guilty_a of_o all_o for_o he_o that_o say_v thou_o shall_v not_o commit_v adultery_n say_v also_o thou_o shall_v not_o kill_v now_o then_o though_o thou_o do_v none_o adultery_n yet_o if_o thou_o kill_v thou_o be_v a_o transgressor_n of_o the_o law_n and_o thus_o while_o they_o have_v all_o their_o do_n reckon_v against_o they_o for_o sin_n as_o it_o have_v be_v prove_v that_o the_o best_a of_o they_o be_v no_o better_o they_o come_v within_o the_o rank_n of_o they_o who_o multiply_v iniquity_n and_o cause_n sin_n to_o be_v increase_v object_n and_o if_o it_o be_v object_v that_o there_o be_v other_o sort_n of_o people_n beside_o these_o four_o who_o increase_n sin_n in_o the_o land_n answ_n i_o answer_v that_o some_o of_o god_n child_n by_o their_o infirmity_n be_v in_o show_n like_o the_o former_a 8.46_o yet_o because_o they_o will_v not_o sin_n and_o do_v break_v out_o rather_o of_o infirmity_n then_o wilful_o and_o witting_o to_o lie_v therein_o and_o do_v manifest_a use_n who_o they_o be_v that_o fill_v the_o world_n with_o sin_n that_o none_o can_v be_v ignorant_a of_o it_o who_o be_v not_o wilful_o blind_a now_o it_o remain_v what_o these_o shall_v do_v that_o be_v before_o all_o thing_n that_o they_o repent_v and_o seek_v mercy_n and_o hold_v it_o by_o faith_n both_o which_o as_o they_o have_v sufficient_a cause_n to_o look_v after_o with_o all_o speed_n because_o without_o the_o one_o it_o be_v impossible_a to_o please_v god_n that_o be_v faith_n 11.6_o and_o without_o the_o other_o i_o mean_v repentance_n and_o amendment_n of_o life_n 8._o the_o vengeance_n of_o god_n can_v be_v avoid_v so_o they_o have_v two_o great_a encouragement_n to_o set_v they_o forward_o to_o seek_v both_o this_o be_v add_v repentance_n if_o they_o feel_v far_o from_o they_o the_o first_o be_v that_o the_o lord_n have_v other_o sheep_n first_o which_o be_v not_o yet_o of_o his_o fold_n and_o he_o count_v many_o to_o be_v his_o people_n who_o be_v not_o yet_o call_v to_o know_v that_o they_o be_v his_o 10.16_o who_o may_v by_o the_o preach_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v add_v to_o his_o faithful_a one_o and_o in_o hope_n hereof_o they_o shall_v give_v all_o diligence_n to_o wait_v upon_o the_o lord_n in_o his_o ordinance_n for_o this_o blessing_n second_o the_o second_o be_v this_o that_o they_o search_v and_o try_v their_o way_n what_o be_v amiss_o in_o they_o though_o they_o shall_v never_o find_v out_o the_o hundred_o part_n of_o the_o sin_n that_o be_v in_o they_o and_o then_o consider_v the_o woe_n they_o be_v in_o thereby_o which_o if_o they_o can_v be_v persuade_v to_o do_v it_o be_v the_o most_o direct_a way_n to_o make_v they_o turn_v to_o the_o lord_n both_z in_o embrace_v god_n promise_v of_o mercy_n which_o then_o belong_v to_o they_o by_o god_n free_a grant_n and_o also_o in_o reform_v their_o life_n from_o the_o which_o by_o their_o sin_n they_o be_v estrange_v both_o these_o kind_n of_o turn_v to_o god_n the_o prophet_n joel_n exhort_v the_o people_n unto_o say_v read_v your_o heart_n that_o be_v 2.13_o by_o search_v into_o they_o to_o see_v the_o foulnes_n of_o they_o and_o not_o your_o garment_n and_o turn_v to_o the_o lord_n your_o god_n and_o jeremy_n in_o his_o lamentation_n do_v the_o same_o 3.40_o when_o he_o say_v search_v your_o way_n and_o turn_v again_o unto_o the_o lord_n and_o this_o be_v the_o only_a way_n for_o such_o as_o have_v bring_v themselves_o out_o of_o favour_n with_o god_n and_o draw_v down_o his_o wrath_n upon_o themselves_o by_o multiply_a iniquity_n to_o recover_v world_n with_o iniquity_n who_o lest_o they_o shall_v too_o slight_o regard_v that_o which_o have_v be_v say_v to_o persuade_v they_o to_o faith_n and_o repentance_n i_o think_v it_o not_o amiss_o while_o some_o that_o take_v upon_o they_o to_o preach_v be_v unsound_a in_o religion_n some_o ignorant_a account_n some_o stuff_n their_o sermon_n with_o authority_n of_o man_n whereas_o it_o be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n that_o have_v authority_n over_o man_n conscience_n 4.12_o some_o go_v above_o the_o people_n capacity_n and_o reach_v few_o preach_v diligent_o constant_o and_o careful_o that_o i_o speak_v not_o of_o the_o lose_v and_o dissolute_a behaviour_n that_o be_v not_o tolerable_a among_o their_o hearer_n how_o shall_v preach_a keep_v the_o credit_n that_o it_o ought_v to_o be_v in_o and_o be_v like_a to_o draw_v or_o persuade_v people_n to_o faith_n and_o repentance_n nay_o what_o great_a cause_n be_v there_o of_o the_o general_a ignorance_n carelessness_n and_o profane_v of_o life_n in_o the_o people_n than_o these_o and_o such_o like_a abuse_n see_v in_o the_o ministry_n and_o while_o they_o he_o thus_o far_o out_o of_o the_o way_n themselves_o they_o be_v yet_o more_o bold_a to_o open_v their_o mouth_n against_o the_o diligenter_fw-la sort_n who_o know_v that_o christ_n require_v it_o at_o their_o hand_n that_o as_o they_o love_v he_o they_o shall_v feed_v his_o sheep_n and_o his_o lamb_n 21.15_o do_v of_o conscience_n seek_v to_o discharge_v their_o duty_n and_o they_o be_v therefore_o cry_v one_o of_o as_o do_v more_o than_o they_o need_v and_o recreation_n if_o it_o be_v not_o of_o faith_n as_o it_o can_v be_v if_o thou_o be_v not_o in_o christ_n it_o be_v sin_n and_o therefore_o not_o in_o the_o lord_n and_o by_o this_o we_o see_v that_o only_o the_o righteous_a man_n can_v be_v true_o joyful_a the_o worldly_a and_o the_o carnal_a he_o may_v rejoice_v in_o lawful_a thing_n but_o he_o can_v rejoice_v lawful_o but_o in_o a_o carnal_a and_o fleshly_a manner_n this_o joy_n neither_o proceed_v from_o god_n nor_o tend_v to_o god_n but_o rest_v in_o the_o matter_n neither_o be_v it_o rule_v by_o the_o direction_n of_o god_n word_n but_o be_v disorder_o carry_v by_o the_o sway_n of_o his_o profane_a and_o wicked_a heart_n and_o as_o i_o have_v say_v that_o we_o must_v believe_v in_o christ_n and_o know_v that_o our_o name_n be_v write_v in_o heaven_n before_o we_o can_v rejoice_v in_o the_o lord_n so_o there_o be_v other_o sign_n whereby_o we_o may_v know_v it_o for_o it_o be_v a_o thing_n of_o such_o worth_a and_o excellency_n i_o think_v it_o good_a to_o set_v down_o more_o evidence_n of_o it_o we_o shall_v therefore_o better_o know_v that_o our_o joy_n be_v in_o the_o lord_n if_o we_o love_v god_n great_o that_o be_v more_o than_o all_o that_o be_v precious_a in_o the_o world_n for_o the_o perfection_n of_o love_n be_v joy_n and_o therefore_o be_v careful_a to_o obey_v he_o and_o if_o we_o love_v our_o brethren_n for_o his_o sake_n and_o further_o if_o we_o sigh_v to_o be_v unburden_v 5.1_o and_o long_o to_o be_v with_o christ_n which_o be_v best_a of_o all_o for_o by_o our_o rejoice_v that_o we_o joy_n now_o i_o come_v to_o the_o time_n when_o and_o how_o long_o this_o our_o joy_n be_v to_o be_v in_o god_n and_o that_o be_v always_o the_o lord_n so_o that_o we_o will_v be_v content_v but_o to_o limit_v our_o joy_n within_o those_o bound_n we_o have_v see_v be_v liberal_a and_o bountiful_a for_o the_o time_n he_o do_v not_o stint_v and_o limit_v we_o to_o any_o set_n and_o certain_a time_n but_o he_o will_v have_v we_o to_o rejoice_v in_o he_o evermore_o herein_o differ_v the_o joy_n of_o the_o faithful_a from_o the_o joy_n of_o the_o world_n that_o worldly_a joy_n be_v never_o hope_n how_o cold_a our_o love_n and_o how_o hardly_o we_o have_v proof_n of_o our_o patience_n also_o to_o observe_v our_o corruption_n as_o touchinesse_n forwardness_n unclean_a desire_n wrath_n liberty_n and_o multiply_v his_o blessing_n upon_o they_o they_o shall_v not_o as_o the_o man_n of_o the_o world_n do_v eat_v and_o drink_v and_o sleep_v and_o play_v as_o though_o they_o shall_v never_o be_v call_v to_o their_o account_n for_o the_o mispending_a of_o their_o time_n and_o the_o ill_a use_v of_o his_o benefit_n but_o rather_o they_o shall_v know_v first_o that_o all_o god_n but_o in_o pleasure_n &_o profit_n but_o another_o duty_n belong_v unto_o they_o which_o the_o apostle_n s_o 5.1_o james_n exhort_v they_o unto_o bid_v they_o to_o weep_v &_o howl_v though_o they_o be_v rich_a man_n if_o they_o be_v oppressor_n and_o wicked_a &_o be_v not_o rich_a in_o god_n and_o again_o chap._n 4._o vers_fw-la 9_o wail_v and_o sorrow_n you_o sinner_n and_o weep_v 4.9_o let_v your_o laughter_n be_v turn_v into_o mourning_n &_o your_o joy_n into_o heaviness_n faithful_a the_o reason_n of_o the_o restraint_n and_o limit_v of_o it_o to_o the_o faithful_a be_v easy_a and_o yet_o very_o worthy_a to_o be_v stand_v upon_o for_o as_o for_o the_o righteous_a they_o have_v both_o great_a cause_n to_o rejoice_v and_o great_a need_n to_o be_v stir_v up_o to_o this_o duty_n whereas_o the_o wicked_a have_v neither_o any_o true_a cause_n of_o sound_a joy_n neither_o feel_v they_o any_o need_n of_o it_o that_o the_o faithful_a have_v need_v to_o be_v stir_v to_o this_o duty_n we_o can_v be_v ignorant_a if_o we_o consider_v that_o which_o the_o psalmist_n write_v psalm_n 34.19_o and_o the_o whole_a scripture_n accord_v with_o that_o many_o be_v the_o trouble_n of_o the_o righteous_a 34.19_o and_o whosoever_o will_v follow_v christ_n he_o must_v forsake_v father_n mother_n good_n land_n brethren_n sister_n life_n &_o all_o and_o take_v up_o his_o cross_n daily_o &_o follow_v he_o for_o such_o be_v the_o rage_n of_o satan_n &_o the_o malice_n of_o the_o wicked_a as_o against_o the_o whole_a church_n in_o general_a so_o against_o all_o the_o godly_a that_o they_o never_o can_v have_v as_o it_o be_v peaceable_a hour_n but_o so_o soon_o as_o they_o have_v give_v their_o name_n to_o christ_n and_o be_v enter_v into_o his_o school_n they_o have_v one_o trouble_n and_o vexation_n or_o other_o to_o wrestle_v withal_o they_o see_v matter_n of_o grief_n sorrow_n within_o they_o without_o they_o and_o round_o about_o they_o within_o they_o they_o have_v wicked_a rebellion_n of_o their_o own_o heart_n to_o be_v as_o it_o be_v prick_n and_o thorn_n in_o their_o flesh_n to_o gall_v and_o vex_v and_o disquiet_v they_o they_o have_v satan_n continual_o cast_v his_o deadly_a and_o fiery_a dart_n of_o tentation_n into_o their_o soul_n and_o all_o the_o world_n in_o a_o manner_n they_o shall_v see_v to_o be_v as_o it_o be_v band_v and_o combine_v together_o against_o they_o in_o mock_n in_o taunt_n in_o slander_n in_o whatsoever_o injury_n and_o ill_a turn_n and_o mischief_n they_o can_v do_v unto_o they_o alas_o any_o one_o of_o these_o be_v cause_n sufficient_a to_o make_v the_o child_n of_o god_n heavy_a pensive_a and_o sorrowful_a for_o their_o strength_n be_v not_o the_o strength_n of_o stone_n nor_o their_o flesh_n of_o brosse_n as_o job_n speak_v of_o himself_o 12_o in_o the_o six_o of_o his_o book_n but_o these_o pierce_v and_o wound_v they_o deep_o to_o their_o very_a soul_n great_a need_n therefore_o the_o faithful_a have_v to_o be_v raise_v up_o from_o this_o sorrow_n and_o heaviness_n of_o heart_n to_o rejoice_v and_o be_v make_v merry_a in_o the_o lord_n for_o shall_v they_o have_v no_o joy_n to_o help_v to_o countervail_v their_o sorrow_n note_v the_o life_n of_o the_o christian_a be_v too_o tedious_a and_o grievous_a to_o be_v endure_v by_o any_o the_o most_o patient_a sufferer_n in_o the_o world_n the_o trouble_n that_o accompany_v it_o be_v so_o many_o and_o the_o sorrow_n so_o grievous_a that_o they_o will_v eat_v out_o the_o very_a heart_n of_o the_o faithful_a quickly_a if_o it_o be_v not_o that_o joy_n mix_v and_o intermedle_v withal_o do_v mitigate_v the_o sense_n and_o ease_n and_o lighten_v the_o burden_n of_o they_o rejoice_v as_o for_o wicked_a man_n they_o have_v no_o such_o burden_n of_o trouble_n and_o sorrow_n to_o be_v ease_v of_o the_o devil_n be_v not_o grievous_a unto_o they_o with_o his_o tentation_n be_v the_o tentation_n what_o they_o will_v be_v they_o like_v they_o well_o they_o entertain_v they_o they_o make_v much_o of_o they_o they_o be_v the_o welcome_a guest_n that_o can_v come_v unto_o they_o for_o their_o be_v no_o suggestion_n of_o satan_n but_o it_o be_v evil_a there_o be_v no_o kind_n of_o evil_n but_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o wicked_a man_n be_v prone_a unto_o it_o if_o the_o devil_n provoke_v he_o to_o wrath_n and_o anger_n the_o heart_n be_v before_o stray_v after_o it_o if_o to_o uncleanness_n to_o profaneness_n to_o swear_v etc._n etc._n these_o be_v all_o please_a motion_n unto_o the_o unregenerate_a person_n sin_n also_o and_o corruption_n that_o dwell_v and_o reign_v in_o he_o be_v not_o troublesome_a and_o grievous_a unto_o the_o wicked_a man_n nay_o he_o be_v so_o far_o from_o sorrow_v because_o of_o this_o corruption_n that_o it_o be_v his_o darling_n and_o his_o delight_n it_o be_v as_o his_o right_a hand_n as_o his_o use_n as_o his_o life_n and_o soul_n so_o dear_a be_v it_o unto_o he_o yea_o rather_o he_o can_v endure_v to_o have_v his_o good_n his_o delight_n yea_o his_o very_a life_n take_v away_o rather_o than_o to_o forgo_v this_o sin_n and_o corruption_n of_o his_o heart_n as_o for_o the_o world_n they_o and_o it_o be_v in_o a_o very_a quiet_a and_o friendly_a league_n for_o because_o they_o be_v of_o the_o world_n the_o world_n can_v at_o but_o love_n it_o own_o 15.19_o as_o our_o saviour_n teach_v we_o joh._n 15.19_o so_o that_o the_o wicked_a have_v no_o such_o enemy_n no_o trouble_n nor_o sorrow_n as_o the_o righteous_a have_v but_o they_o live_v at_o peace_n with_o their_o sin_n at_o peace_n with_o the_o devil_n and_o at_o peace_n with_o the_o world_n they_o have_v mirth_n enough_o and_o too_o much_o for_o they_o they_o need_v not_o as_o they_o think_v neither_o care_n they_o
man_n to_o consider_v first_o thorough_a with_o himself_o how_o fearful_a a_o thing_n it_o be_v to_o fall_v into_o the_o hand_n of_o the_o live_a god_n 10.31_o and_o how_o terrible_a a_o thing_n the_o wrath_n of_o god_n be_v which_o shall_v be_v reveal_v upon_o the_o wicked_a and_o disobedient_a even_o this_o shall_v give_v he_o great_a cause_n to_o rejoice_v that_o by_o the_o pardon_n of_o his_o sin_n he_o have_v escape_v the_o wrath_n that_o be_v to_o come_v and_o second_o let_v he_o consider_v how_o great_a be_v the_o glory_n provide_v for_o all_o they_o that_o fear_v the_o lord_n in_o further_a reason_n which_o be_v many_o to_o enlarge_v the_o proof_n of_o this_o point_n that_o the_o righteous_a as_o they_o have_v need_v to_o be_v stir_v up_o to_o joy_n so_o they_o have_v just_a cause_n notwithstanding_o all_o that_o may_v seem_v to_o make_v to_o the_o contrary_a to_o be_v merry_a and_o glad_a in_o heart_n it_o be_v not_o thus_o with_o the_o wicked_a joy_n for_o though_o they_o have_v peace_n with_o satan_n and_o peace_n with_o the_o corruption_n of_o their_o own_o heart_n yet_o want_v they_o the_o pardon_n of_o their_o sin_n and_o therefore_o be_v at_o war_n and_o enmity_n with_o god_n though_o they_o labour_v to_o forget_v the_o same_o and_o all_o that_o fearful_a wrath_n to_o come_v hang_v over_o their_o head_n and_o may_v fall_v they_o know_v not_o how_o soon_o upon_o they_o second_o they_o want_v that_o imputation_n of_o christ_n righteousness_n to_o cover_v their_o shame_n before_o god_n so_o that_o they_o can_v assure_v themselves_o that_o they_o have_v any_o part_n or_o portion_n in_o the_o glory_n of_o the_o son_n of_o god_n that_o be_v to_o be_v reveal_v they_o can_v behold_v god_n as_o a_o love_a father_n as_o their_o redeemer_n in_o christ_n jesus_n they_o be_v whole_o possess_v with_o the_o spirit_n of_o fear_n and_o bondage_n that_o they_o can_v with_o boldness_n call_v upon_o god_n they_o have_v no_o promise_n nor_o assurance_n that_o god_n will_v hear_v they_o 9_o nay_o his_o ear_n be_v stop_v that_o he_o will_v not_o hear_v they_o his_o eye_n be_v turn_v from_o they_o that_o he_o will_v not_o regard_v and_o pity_v their_o misery_n he_o will_v have_v no_o communion_n no_o society_n company_n nor_o fellowship_n with_o they_o i_o cease_v to_o speak_v of_o those_o hellish_a terror_n of_o a_o accuse_a conscience_n that_o can_v but_o expel_v all_o joy_n and_o comfort_v forth_o so_o oft_o as_o their_o sleepy_a conscience_n be_v awaken_v and_o omit_v many_o other_o thing_n which_o may_v be_v add_v to_o this_o purpose_n by_o this_o little_a which_o have_v be_v say_v the_o truth_n of_o this_o point_n be_v clear_a that_o the_o righteous_a and_o they_o alone_a have_v both_o need_n and_o just_a cause_n wherefore_o to_o rejoice_v we_o will_v now_o come_v brief_o to_o some_o few_o use_n of_o this_o point_n and_o pass_v to_o the_o next_o in_o order_n use_v 1_o first_o therefore_o if_o the_o righteous_a only_o and_o the_o faithful_a have_v need_n of_o this_o joy_n duty_n as_o we_o have_v show_v it_o be_v not_o for_o the_o minister_n of_o god_n to_o comfort_n and_o cheer_v up_o any_o but_o these_o for_o we_o know_v the_o minister_n be_v a_o physician_n of_o the_o soul_n to_o cure_v the_o disease_n and_o a_o chirurgeon_n to_o cure_v the_o wound_n of_o the_o soul_n now_o it_o be_v not_o for_o a_o physician_n to_o prescribe_v to_o the_o whole_a but_o to_o the_o sick_a nor_o for_o the_o chirurgeon_n to_o plaster_n that_o which_o be_v sound_a but_o that_o which_o be_v hurt_v and_o wound_v the_o wicked_a be_v whole_a they_o be_v not_o sick_a or_o wound_v with_o sorrow_n no_o need_n therefore_o have_v they_o of_o the_o chirurgeon_n to_o bind_v up_o that_o which_o be_v break_v neither_o of_o the_o physician_n to_o restore_v health_n when_o none_o be_v lose_v but_o the_o righteous_a man_n and_o he_o that_o true_o fear_v god_n he_o be_v cast_v down_o with_o sorrow_n and_o have_v need_n therefore_o to_o be_v raise_v up_o when_o he_o be_v sick_a of_o sorrow_n and_o have_v need_n of_o heavenly_a cheer_v to_o restore_v he_o he_o be_v wound_v in_o soul_n every_o day_n and_o therefore_o have_v need_n to_o have_v the_o oil_n of_o gladness_n to_o be_v pour_v into_o his_o wound_n use_v 2_o again_o have_v the_o faithful_a and_o they_o only_o just_a cause_n to_o be_v merry_a let_v the_o bad_a learn_fw-mi then_o to_o magnify_v the_o life_n of_o the_o faithful_a as_o the_o most_o happy_a and_o bless_a life_n for_o this_o be_v certain_a he_o be_v most_o happy_a and_o most_o bless_a who_o have_v in_o deed_n and_o in_o truth_n great_a cause_n of_o joy_n and_o to_o reverence_v their_o gift_n that_o they_o may_v have_v a_o part_n in_o they_o use_v 3_o three_o have_v the_o godly_a alone_a need_n of_o comfort_n and_o cheer_v because_o they_o be_v sick_a and_o wound_v already_o with_o sorrow_n then_o mark_v the_o tyger-like_a cruelty_n of_o the_o wicked_a that_o be_v so_o far_o from_o comfort_v and_o relieve_v they_o as_o they_o ought_v that_o they_o add_v sorrow_n to_o their_o sorrow_n and_o affliction_n to_o affliction_n what_o they_o can_v this_o be_v beside_o all_o bound_n of_o common_a humanity_n as_o we_o know_v and_o savour_v of_o a_o devilish_a nature_n to_o rend_v and_o
to_o tear_v the_o wound_n that_o we_o ought_v to_o heal_v and_o to_o bind_v up_o but_o this_o do_v the_o wicked_a when_o they_o seek_v to_o vex_v and_o grieve_v the_o faithful_a that_o be_v already_o wound_v and_o cast_v down_o with_o sorrow_n in_o their_o soul_n yea_o and_o for_o that_o they_o carry_v corruption_n still_o about_o they_o i_o say_v not_o he_o be_v the_o happy_a that_o rejoice_v most_o for_o that_o no_o doubt_n many_o time_n he_o may_v do_v which_o be_v but_o in_o a_o very_a woeful_a case_n as_o our_o saviour_n christ_n say_v woe_n be_v to_o you_o that_o laugh_v but_o he_o i_o say_v be_v the_o happy_a man_n that_o have_v the_o great_a cause_n of_o joy_n joy_n for_o this_o be_v the_o argument_n of_o all_o those_o blessedness_n which_o our_o saviour_n christ_n pronounce_v matth._n 5._o the_o poor_a in_o spirit_n be_v pronounce_v bless_v because_o they_o have_v cause_n to_o rejoice_v so_o they_o that_o mourn_v they_o that_o be_v meek_a etc._n etc._n be_v bless_v because_o these_o though_o they_o do_v not_o rejoice_v yet_o they_o have_v every_o one_o of_o they_o just_a cause_n to_o rejoice_v but_o to_o proceed_v have_v the_o faithful_a and_o righteous_a alone_a just_a cause_n of_o joy_n then_o if_o thou_o desire_v sound_o to_o rejoice_v practise_v careful_o and_o constant_o a_o just_a and_o righteous_a life_n for_o without_o this_o faith_n and_o uprightness_n it_o be_v impossible_a though_o thou_o have_v make_v a_o beginning_n therein_o already_o ever_o to_o find_v any_o state_n that_o will_v give_v thou_o cause_n all_o thing_n well_o weigh_v to_o take_v any_o joy_n in_o it_o it_o be_v not_o the_o throne_n of_o a_o prince_n nor_o the_o treasure_n of_o the_o earth_n nor_o the_o pleasure_n of_o the_o world_n that_o can_v afford_v it_o use_v 4_o last_o have_v the_o righteous_a man_n cause_n to_o rejoice_v then_o ought_v he_o to_o stir_v up_o himself_o unto_o the_o duty_n follow_v namely_o that_o he_o do_v rejoice_v indeed_o this_o nature_n itself_o teach_v even_o natural_a man_n that_o if_o they_o see_v just_a cause_n why_o they_o shall_v be_v glad_a they_o will_v stir_v themselves_o up_o to_o be_v joyful_a and_o merry_a and_o tend_v to_o our_o own_o joy_n and_o comfort_v 8.64_o if_o the_o king_n or_o prince_n command_v their_o subject_n to_o be_v merry_a as_o solomon_n 1._o king_n 8.64_o ester_n 5.1_o this_o alone_a stir_v the_o manner_n of_o it_o that_o it_o must_v be_v in_o the_o lord_n and_o then_o second_o enlarge_v by_o the_o time_n that_o it_o may_v be_v always_o to_o rejoice_v in_o the_o lord_n be_v to_o rejoice_v for_o that_o we_o know_v he_o to_o be_v our_o god_n alsufficient_a and_o christ_n jesus_n our_o lord_n also_o to_o rejoice_v for_o the_o lord_n cause_n 17.3_o who_o alone_o give_v &_o minister_v unto_o we_o cause_n of_o rejoice_v as_o 1._o sam._n 21._o in_o the_o thanksgiving_n of_o hanna_n my_o heart_n rejoice_v in_o the_o lord_n my_o horn_n be_v exalt_v in_o the_o lord_n so_o other_o sort_n of_o joy_n which_o be_v many_o for_o some_o there_o be_v who_o rejoice_v in_o themselves_o and_o in_o that_o serve_v of_o god_n that_o like_v they_o and_o not_o in_o the_o lord_n as_o first_o many_o natural_a man_n if_o they_o have_v a_o good_a meaning_n and_o live_v quiet_o and_o civil_o among_o man_n they_o think_v they_o can_v choose_v but_o be_v save_v these_o man_n joy_n but_o all_o the_o ground_n of_o their_o joy_n be_v not_o from_o god_n but_o from_o themselves_o from_o their_o own_o blind_a reason_n and_o the_o presumption_n of_o their_o own_o heart_n second_o papist_n and_o such_o as_o follow_v the_o ancient_a pharisy_n these_o man_n not_o only_o do_v many_o civil_a good_a duty_n but_o they_o fast_o they_o pray_v they_o pay_v tithe_n of_o all_o they_o have_v they_o give_v alm_n they_o abstain_v from_o injustice_n extortion_n etc._n etc._n they_o be_v very_o strict_a and_o very_a precise_a in_o many_o thing_n they_o will_v not_o marry_v they_o will_v not_o eat_v such_o and_o such_o meat_n and_o at_o such_o time_n these_o man_n they_o rejoice_v also_o yea_o and_o boast_v themselves_o not_o only_o before_o man_n but_o before_o god_n as_o the_o pharisie_n do_v
