as_o sometime_o from_o satan_n who_o cast_v they_o into_o our_o head_n sometime_o from_o a_o evil_a custom_n when_o man_n willing_o hearken_v to_o lewd_a and_o curse_a speech_n which_o immediate_o tend_v to_o the_o dishonour_n of_o god_n or_o to_o the_o wilful_a abuse_n of_o his_o word_n judgement_n or_o mercy_n and_o upon_o hear_v approve_v of_o they_o or_o at_o least_o seek_v not_o to_o hinder_v they_o so_o much_o as_o in_o they_o lie_v sometime_o they_o creep_v into_o man_n heart_n by_o degree_n when_o they_o wax_v cold_a in_o god_n service_n and_o make_v little_a conscience_n of_o those_o duty_n which_o immediate_o concern_v god_n glory_n or_o that_o accustom_v themselves_o too_o often_o to_o causeless_o swear_v forswear_v curse_v etc._n etc._n now_o the_o danger_n of_o it_o be_v very_o great_a what_o cause_n soever_o it_o proceed_v from_o especial_o in_o those_o that_o look_v towards_o heaven_n and_o apply_v their_o heart_n to_o serve_v god_n and_o fear_v his_o name_n for_o it_o often_o bring_v forth_o desperation_n and_o manifold_a horror_n and_o trouble_n of_o mind_n so_o that_o often_o they_o be_v tempt_v to_o make_v away_o themselves_o judge_v themselves_o to_o be_v firebrand_n of_o hell_n quest._n what_o course_n be_v to_o be_v take_v for_o the_o cure_n of_o this_o grievous_a malady_n answ._n first_o enquiry_n must_v be_v make_v into_o the_o next_o cause_n of_o this_o tentation_n as_o 1._o we_o must_v inquire_v whether_o it_o have_v its_o beginning_n from_o the_o thought_n of_o our_o own_o mind_n or_o from_o the_o suggestion_n of_o the_o devil_n quest._n how_o shall_v we_o know_v from_o whether_o of_o these_o two_o they_o arise_v answ._n first_o by_o the_o entrance_n of_o they_o into_o the_o mind_n for_o those_o which_o come_v from_o the_o devil_n come_v speedy_o like_o lightning_n and_o after_o a_o sort_n be_v force_v in_o so_o that_o we_o can_v avoid_v they_o and_o they_o come_v so_o often_o that_o they_o weaken_v the_o memory_n dull_a the_o sense_n and_o weary_a and_o confound_v the_o brain_n second_o they_o may_v be_v know_v to_o come_v from_o the_o devil_n because_o they_o be_v direct_o against_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n the_o spark_n whereof_o be_v not_o quite_o extinct_a in_o we_o by_o sin_n three_o at_o the_o first_o conceive_v such_o thought_n the_o party_n be_v smite_v with_o extraordinary_a fear_n and_o his_o flesh_n be_v so_o trouble_v that_o many_o time_n sickness_n and_o faint_n do_v follow_v 4_o remember_v that_o blaspemous_a thought_n can_v ordinary_o proceed_v from_o any_o but_o such_o as_o be_v give_v up_o to_o reprobate_a mind_n but_o such_o as_o come_v from_o the_o devil_n be_v usual_o cast_v into_o such_o man_n mind_n as_o be_v civil_a and_o such_o as_o profess_v the_o gospel_n at_o least_o in_o show_n and_o sometime_o into_o such_o as_o be_v the_o true_a member_n of_o christ._n second_o enquiry_n must_v be_v make_v whether_o thou_o love_v and_o approve_v of_o such_o thought_n or_o no._n to_o which_o thou_o will_v answer_v that_o thou_o abhor_v they_o as_o the_o devil_n himself_o quest._n after_o such_o inquiry_n make_v to_o find_v out_o the_o cause_n what_o remedy_n must_v be_v apply_v answ._n first_o such_o must_v be_v inform_v that_o these_o thought_n come_v from_o the_o devil_n be_v not_o thy_o sin_n but_o thy_o cross_n for_o they_o be_v the_o devil_n sin_n who_o shall_v answer_v for_o they_o but_o not_o we_o except_o we_o approve_v and_o give_v consent_n to_o they_o satan_n cast_v such_o thought_n into_o christ_n himself_o when_o he_o tempt_v he_o to_o infidelity_n covetousness_n and_o idolatry_n yet_o be_v christ_n free_a from_o sin_n because_o his_o holy_a heart_n consent_v not_o to_o but_o abhor_v and_o repel_v they_o again_o we_o must_v let_v else_o but_o a_o continual_a combat_n between_o the_o unregenerate_a part_n the_o flesh_n with_o the_o lust_n thereof_o and_o the_o part_n regenerate_v the_o spirit_n with_o all_o the_o holy_a
