the_o bishop_n of_o worcester_n letter_n to_o a_o friend_n for_o vindication_n of_o himself_o from_o mr._n baxter_n calumny_n tenet_n insanabile_fw-la multos_fw-la scribendi_fw-la cacoethes_n london_n print_v by_o r._n norton_n for_o timothy_n garthwait_n at_o the_o little_a north-door_n of_o st._n paul_n church_n 1662._o mr._n baxter_n have_v late_o print_v a_o book_n call_v the_o mischief_n of_o self-ignorance_n and_o the_o benefit_n of_o self-acquaintance_n in_o the_o address_n of_o which_o book_n to_o his_o dear_o belove_v the_o inhabitant_n of_o kidderminster_n he_o have_v this_o ensue_a passage_n relate_v to_o the_o bishop_n of_o worcester_n in_o a_o disputation_n by_o writing_n those_o of_o the_o other_o part_n form_v a_o argument_n who_o major_a proposition_n be_v to_o this_o sense_n for_o i_o have_v no_o copy_n whatsoever_o book_n enjoin_v nothing_o but_o what_o be_v of_o itself_o lawful_a and_o by_o lawful_a authority_n enjoin_v nothing_o that_o be_v sinful_a we_o deny_v this_o proposition_n and_o at_o last_o give_v divers_a reason_n of_o our_o denial_n among_o which_o one_o be_v that_o it_o may_v be_v unlawful_a by_o accident_n and_o therefore_o sinful_a you_o now_o know_v my_o crime_n it_o be_v my_o concur_v with_o learned_a reverend_a brethren_n to_o give_v this_o reason_n of_o our_o denial_n of_o a_o proposition_n yet_o they_o be_v not_o forbid_v to_o preach_v for_o it_o and_o i_o hope_v shall_v not_o be_v but_o only_o i._o you_o have_v public_o hear_v from_o a_o mouth_n that_o shall_v speak_v nothing_o but_o the_o word_n of_o charity_n truth_n and_o soberness_n especial_o there_o that_o this_o be_v a_o desperate_a shift_n that_o man_n at_o the_o last_o be_v force_v to_o and_o infer_v that_o than_o neither_o god_n nor_o man_n can_v enjoin_v without_o sin_n in_o city_n and_o country_n this_o sound_v forth_o to_o my_o reproach_n i_o shall_v take_v it_o for_o a_o act_n of_o clemency_n to_o have_v be_v smite_v profess_o for_o nothing_o and_o that_o it_o may_v not_o have_v be_v think_v necessary_a to_o afflict_v i_o by_o a_o defamation_n that_o so_o i_o may_v seem_v just_o afflict_v by_o a_o prohibition_n to_o preach_v the_o gospel_n but_o indeed_o be_v there_o in_o these_o word_n of_o we_o so_o great_a a_o crime_n though_o we_o doubt_v not_o but_o they_o know_v that_o our_o assertion_n make_v not_o every_o evil_a accident_n to_o be_v such_o as_o make_v a_o imposition_n unlawful_a yet_o we_o express_v this_o by_o word_n to_o they_o at_o that_o time_n for_o fear_v of_o be_v misreport_v and_o i_o tell_v it_o to_o the_o right_n reverend_a bishop_n when_o he_o forbid_v i_o to_o preach_v and_o give_v this_o as_o a_o reason_n and_o i_o must_v confess_v i_o be_o still_o guilty_a of_o so_o much_o weakness_n as_o to_o be_v confident_a that_o some_o thing_n not_o evil_a of_o themselves_o may_v have_v accident_n so_o evil_a as_o may_v make_v it_o a_o sin_n to_o he_o that_o shall_v command_v they_o be_v this_o opinion_n inconsistent_a with_o all_o government_n yea_o i_o must_v confess_v myself_o guilty_a of_o so_o much_o great_a weakness_n as_o that_o i_o think_v i_o shall_v never_o have_v find_v a_o man_n on_o earth_n that_o have_v the_o ordinary_a reason_n of_o a_o man_n that_o have_v make_v question_n of_o it_o yea_o i_o shall_v say_v more_o than_o that_o which_o have_v offend_v viz._n that_o whensoever_o the_o command_a or_o forbid_v of_o a_o thing_n indifferent_a be_v like_a to_o occasion_v more_o hurt_n than_o good_a and_o this_o may_v be_v foresee_v the_o command_a or_o forbid_v it_o be_v a_o sin_n but_o yet_o this_o be_v not_o the_o assertion_n that_o i_o be_o chargeable_a with_o but_o that_o some_o accident_n there_o may_v be_v that_o may_v make_v the_o imposition_n sinful_a if_o i_o may_v ask_v it_o without_o accuse_v of_o other_o how_o will_v my_o crime_n have_v be_v denominate_v if_o i_o have_v say_v the_o contrary_a shall_v i_o not_o have_v be_v judge_v unmeet_a to_o live_v in_o any_o govern_a society_n it_o be_v not_o unlawful_a of_o itself_o to_o command_v out_o a_o navy_n to_o sea_n but_o if_o it_o be_v foresee_v that_o they_o will_v fall_v into_o the_o enemy_n hand_n or_o be_v like_a to_o perish_v by_o any_o accident_n and_o the_o necessity_n of_o send_v they_o be_v small_a or_o none_o it_o be_v a_o sin_n to_o send_v they_o it_o be_v not_o unlawful_a of_o itself_o to_o sell_v poison_n or_o give_v a_o knife_n to_o another_o or_o to_o bid_v another_o to_o do_v it_o but_o if_o it_o be_v foresee_v that_o they_o will_v be_v use_v to_o poison_v or_o kill_v the_o buyer_n it_o be_v unlawful_a and_o i_o think_v the_o law_n will_v make_v he_o believe_v it_o that_o be_v guilty_a it_o be_v not_o of_o itself_o unlawful_a to_o light_v a_o candle_n or_o set_v fire_n on_o a_o straw_n but_o if_o it_o may_v be_v foreknow_v that_o by_o another_o negligence_n or_o wilfulness_n it_o be_v like_a to_o set_v fire_n on_o the_o city_n or_o give_v fire_n to_o a_o train_n or_o store_n of_o gunpowder_n that_o be_v under_o the_o parliament_n house_n when_o the_o king_n and_o parliament_n be_v there_o i_o crave_v the_o bishop_n pardon_n for_o believe_v that_o it_o be_v sinful_a to_o do_v it_o or_o command_v it_o yea_o or_o not_o to_o hinder_v it_o in_o any_o such_o case_n when_o qui_n non_fw-la vetat_fw-la peccare_fw-la cum_fw-la potest_fw-la jubet_fw-la yea_o though_o go_v to_o god_n public_a worship_n be_v of_o itself_o so_o far_o from_o be_v a_o sin_n that_o it_o be_v a_o duty_n yet_o i_o think_v it_o be_v a_o sin_n to_o command_v it_o to_o all_o in_o time_n of_o a_o rage_a pestilence_n or_o when_o they_o shall_v be_v defend_v the_o city_n against_o the_o assault_n of_o a_o enemy_n it_o may_v rather_o than_o be_v a_o duty_n to_o prohibit_v it_o i_o think_v paul_n speak_v not_o any_o thing_n inconsistent_a with_o the_o government_n of_o god_n or_o man_n when_o he_o bid_v both_o the_o ruler_n and_o the_o people_n of_o the_o church_n not_o to_o destroy_v he_o with_o their_o mea●_n for_o who_o christ_n die_v and_o when_o he_o say_v he_o have_v not_o his_o power_n to_o destruction_n but_o to_o edification_n yea_o there_o be_v evil_a accident_n of_o a_o thing_n not_o evil_a of_o itself_o that_o be_v cause_v by_o the_o commander_n and_o it_o be_v my_o opinion_n that_o they_o may_v prove_v his_o command_n unlawful_a but_o what_o need_v i_o use_v any_o other_o instance_n then_o that_o which_o be_v the_o matter_n of_o our_o dispute_n suppose_v it_o never_o so_o lawful_a of_o itself_o to_o kneel_v in_o the_o reception_n of_o the_o sacrament_n if_o it_o be_v impose_v by_o a_o penalty_n that_o be_v incomparable_o beyond_o the_o proportion_n of_o the_o offence_n that_o penalty_n be_v a_o accident_n of_o the_o command_n and_o make_v it_o by_o accident_n sinful_a in_o the_o commander_n if_o a_o prince_n shall_v have_v subject_n so_o weak_a as_o that_o all_o of_o they_o think_v it_o a_o sin_n against_o the_o example_n of_o christ_n and_o the_o canon_n of_o the_o general_a counsel_n and_o many_o hundred_o year_n practice_n of_o the_o church_n to_o kneel_v in_o the_o act_n of_o receive_v on_o the_o lord_n day_n if_o he_o shall_v make_v a_o law_n that_o all_o shall_v be_v put_v to_o death_n that_o will_v not_o kneel_v when_o he_o foreknow_v that_o their_o conscience_n will_v command_v they_o all_o or_o most_o of_o they_o to_o die_v rather_o than_o obey_v will_v any_o man_n deny_v his_o command_n to_o be_v unlawful_a by_o this_o accident_n whether_o the_o penalty_n of_o eject_v minister_n that_o dare_v not_o put_v away_o all_o that_o do_v not_o kneel_v and_o of_o cast_v out_o all_o the_o people_n that_o scruple_n it_o from_o the_o church_n be_v too_o great_a for_o such_o a_o circumstance_n and_o so_o in_o the_o rest_n and_o whether_o this_o with_o the_o lamentable_a estate_n of_o many_o congregation_n and_o the_o division_n that_o will_v follow_v be_v all_o foresee_v do_v prove_v the_o imposition_n unlawful_a which_o be_v then_o in_o question_n be_v a_o case_n that_o i_o have_v then_o a_o clear_a call_n to_o speak_v to_o than_o i_o have_v now_o only_o i_o may_v say_v that_o the_o eject_v of_o the_o servant_n of_o christ_n from_o the_o communion_n of_o his_o church_n and_o of_o his_o faithful_a minister_n from_o their_o sacred_a work_n when_o too_o many_o congregation_n have_v none_o but_o insufficient_a or_o scandalous_a teacher_n or_o no_o preach_a minister_n at_o all_o will_v appear_v a_o matter_n of_o very_o great_a moment_n in_o the_o day_n of_o our_o account_n and_o such_o as_o shall_v not_o be_v do_v upon_o any_o but_o a_o necessary_a cause_n where_o the_o benefit_n be_v great_a than_o this_o hurt_n and_o all_o the_o rest_n amount_v to_o have_v give_v you_o to_o who_o i_o owe_v it_o
this_o account_n of_o the_o cause_n for_o which_o i_o be_o forbid_v the_o exercise_n of_o my_o ministry_n in_o that_o country_n i_o now_o direct_v these_o sermon_n to_o your_o hand_n that_o see_v i_o can_v teach_v you_o as_o i_o will_v i_o may_v teach_v you_o as_o i_o can_v and_o if_o i_o much_o long_o enjoy_v such_o liberty_n as_o this_o it_o will_v be_v much_o above_o my_o expectation_n the_o bishop_n of_o worcester_n letter_n to_o a_o friend_n for_o vindication_n of_o himself_o from_o mr._n baxter_n calumny_n sir_n i_o have_v receive_v that_o letter_n of_o you_o whereby_o you_o inform_v i_o that_o mr._n baxter_n have_v late_o write_v and_o print_a something_o with_o such_o a_o reflection_n upon_o i_o that_o i_o be_o oblige_v to_o take_v notice_n of_o it_o i_o thank_v you_o for_o your_o care_n of_o my_o reputation_n which_o next_o to_o conscience_n ought_v to_o be_v the_o dear_a of_o all_o thing_n to_o all_o man_n especial_o to_o man_n of_o my_o profession_n and_o order_n who_o the_o more_o they_o be_v vilify_v whether_o just_o or_o unjust_o the_o less_o good_a they_o will_v be_v able_a to_o do_v especial_o among_o those_o that_o have_v industrious_o be_v prepossess_v with_o prejudice_n either_o against_o their_o person_n or_o their_o function_n this_o be_v st._n paul_n case_n when_o there_o be_v some_o that_o do_v what_o they_o can_v to_o make_v the_o corinthian_n to_o undervalue_v his_o person_n that_o thereby_o they_o may_v discredit_v his_o doctrine_n and_o weaken_v his_o authority_n who_o therefore_o he_o think_v he_o may_v without_o breach_n of_o charity_n call_v false_a apostle_n and_o deceitful_a worker_n nay_o this_o be_v our_o saviour_n own_o case_n who_o while_o he_o live_v here_o upon_o the_o earth_n be_v ever_o and_o anon_o traduce_v and_o slander_v by_o the_o scribe_n and_o pharisee_n those_o proud_a hypocrite_n who_o be_v the_o great_a pretender_n to_o holiness_n and_o yet_o the_o great_a seducer_n of_o the_o people_n and_o the_o gross_a falsifyer_n of_o god_n word_n that_o ever_o be_v in_o the_o world_n until_o these_o our_o time_n which_o have_v bring_v forth_o a_o generation_n of_o man_n st._n johnaptist_n will_v have_v call_v they_o a_o generation_n of_o viper_n who_o in_o the_o art_n of_o holy_a juggle_n and_o malicious_a slander_v have_v outdo_v the_o pharisee_n themselves_o and_o all_o that_o go_v before_o they_o witness_v their_o so_o often_o wrest_v and_o pervert_v the_o scripture_n in_o their_o sermon_n to_o stir_v up_o the_o people_n to_o sedition_n and_o their_o as_o often_o libel_v the_o king_n in_o their_o prayer_n in_o order_n to_o the_o make_n of_o his_o subject_n first_o to_o hate_v he_o then_o to_o fight_v against_o he_o and_o at_o last_o to_o take_v away_o his_o crown_n and_o his_o life_n from_o he_o and_o be_v it_o any_o wonder_n that_o those_o that_o be_v such_o enemy_n to_o king_n shall_v not_o be_v friend_n to_o bishop_n or_o that_o one_o who_o have_v do_v what_o he_o can_v to_o make_v the_o late_a king_n odious_a unto_o his_o people_n shall_v do_v what_o he_o can_v likewise_o to_o make_v the_o pastor_n odious_a unto_o his_o flock_n to_o his_o flock_n i_o say_v for_o it_o be_v the_o bishop_n of_o worcester_n and_o not_o mr._n baxter_n that_o be_v pastor_n of_o kidderminster_n as_o well_o as_o of_o all_o other_o parochial_a church_n in_o that_o diocese_n neither_o do_v i_o or_o any_o other_o bishop_n of_o worcester_n ever_o commit_v the_o care_n of_o soul_n in_o that_o or_o any_o other_o parish_n of_o that_o diocese_n to_o mr_n baxter_n though_o by_o that_o preface_n of_o he_o to_o those_o of_o kidderminster_n he_o will_v make_v the_o world_n believe_v that_o they_o be_v his_o flock_n and_o not_o i_o and_o that_o therefore_o he_o have_v the_o more_o reason_n to_o complain_v of_o my_o defamation_n of_o he_o as_o he_o call_v it_o in_o that_o place_n and_o before_o that_o people_n whereas_o the_o truth_n be_v that_o mr._n baxter_n be_v never_o either_o parson_n vicar_n or_o curate_n there_o or_o any_o where_o else_o in_o my_o diocese_n for_o he_o never_o come_v in_o by_o the_o door_n that_o be_v by_o any_o legal_a right_n or_o lawful_a admission_n into_o that_o sheepfold_n but_o climb_v up_o some_o other_o way_n namely_o by_o violence_n and_o intrusion_n and_o therefore_o by_o christ_n own_o inference_n he_o be_v a_o thief_n and_o a_o robber_n and_o indeed_o he_o do_v rob_v he_o that_o be_v then_o and_o be_v now_o again_o the_o lawful_a vicar_n of_o that_o church_n he_o rob_v he_o i_o say_v first_o of_o his_o reputation_n among_o his_o flock_n and_o then_o of_o his_o mean_n and_o maintenance_n by_o take_v away_o the_o fleece_n as_o well_o as_o the_o flock_n from_o he_o though_o as_o mr._n baxter_n himself_o have_v confess_v to_o i_o he_o be_v a_o man_n of_o a_o unblamable_a life_n and_o conversation_n though_o not_o of_o such_o part_n say_v mr._n baxter_n as_o be_v fit_a to_o qualify_v he_o for_o the_o cure_n of_o so_o great_a a_o congregation_n which_o whether_o it_o be_v so_o or_o no_o i_o be_o sure_a mr._n baxter_n be_v not_o to_o be_v the_o judge_n but_o in_o that_o case_n the_o bishop_n that_o be_v then_o live_a shall_v and_o will_v have_v provide_v he_o a_o coadjutor_n as_o i_o have_v do_v since_o and_o such_o a_o one_o as_o i_o hope_v will_v feed_v that_o flock_n with_o much_o more_o wholesome_a doctrine_n then_o mr._n baxter_n do_v when_o he_o sow_v the_o seed_n of_o schism_n and_o sedition_n and_o blow_v the_o trumpet_n of_o rebellion_n among_o they_o for_o which_o cause_n i_o think_v it_o my_o duty_n as_o be_v their_o pastor_n in_o chief_a not_o only_o to_o forbid_v mr._n baxter_n to_o preach_v there_o any_o more_o which_o by_o the_o way_n he_o have_v do_v without_o my_o licence_n but_o likewise_o to_o preach_v there_o myself_o and_o to_o do_v what_o i_o can_v to_o undeceive_v that_o poor_a seduce_v and_o miserable_o delude_v people_n which_o be_v not_o to_o be_v do_v as_o long_o as_o they_o have_v the_o person_n of_o their_o seducer_n in_o so_o great_a admiration_n and_o therefore_o by_o the_o example_n of_o st._n paul_n who_o in_o order_n to_o the_o same_o end_n do_v take_v the_o same_o course_n with_o alexander_n the_o coppersmith_n with_o demas_n philetus_n and_o hymeneus_n as_o likewise_o by_o the_o example_n of_o christ_n himself_o who_o in_o order_n to_o the_o same_o end_n do_v take_v the_o same_o course_n with_o the_o scribe_n and_o pharisee_n i_o think_v it_o necessary_a to_o let_v they_o know_v that_o one_o that_o be_v of_o great_a authority_n among_o they_o mean_v indeed_o though_o not_o name_v mr._n baxter_n be_v not_o the_o man_n they_o take_v he_o for_o that_o he_o have_v not_o deal_v faithful_o with_o they_o nor_o preach_v the_o word_n of_o god_n sincere_o to_o they_o when_o he_o make_v they_o believe_v it_o be_v lawful_a for_o they_o to_o take_v up_o arm_n against_o the_o king_n nor_o in_o suffer_v if_o not_o make_v they_o to_o scruple_n at_o these_o thing_n as_o unlawful_a which_o he_o himself_o confess_v to_o be_v lawful_a and_o afterward_o make_v use_n of_o those_o scruple_n of_o they_o which_o he_o himself_o have_v infuse_v into_o they_o or_o not_o endeavour_v to_o take_v from_o they_o as_o the_o only_a argument_n why_o those_o thing_n they_o do_v so_o scruple_n at_o shall_v not_o be_v enjoin_v by_o lawful_a authority_n though_o lawful_a in_o themselves_o because_o forsooth_o the_o enjoin_v of_o thing_n lawful_a by_o lawful_a authority_n if_o they_o may_v by_o accident_n be_v the_o occasion_n of_o sin_n be_v sinful_a which_o assertion_n of_o his_o as_o i_o then_o say_v and_o must_v still_o maintain_v be_v destructive_a of_o humane_a society_n in_o take_v away_o the_o authority_n of_o command_v and_o the_o obligation_n of_o obey_v together_o with_o the_o whole_a legislative_a power_n civil_a as_o well_o as_o ecclesiastical_a and_o divine_a as_o well_o as_o humane_a and_o thus_o much_o as_o mr._n baxter_n himself_o say_v i_o tell_v he_o before_o in_o my_o own_o house_n neither_o do_v he_o then_o deny_v the_o assertion_n or_o endeavour_v to_o disprove_v what_o i_o infer_v from_o it_o by_o any_o of_o those_o distinction_n or_o instance_n he_o now_o use_v and_o that_o this_o be_v true_a the_o reverend_n dr._n warmstry_n now_o dean_n of_o worcester_n will_v witness_v for_o i_o who_o i_o desire_v to_o be_v by_o while_o i_o confer_v with_o mr._n baxter_n foresee_v what_o misreport_n a_o man_n of_o mr._n baxters_n principle_n and_o temper_n be_v like_a enough_o to_o make_v of_o what_o shall_v pass_v betwixt_o we_o and_o it_o be_v very_o well_o i_o do_v so_o for_o i_o find_v that_o the_o presbyter_n aswell_o as_o the_o papist_n will_v serve_v themselves_o as_o often_o as_o they_o be_v put_v to_o it_o of_o
