contrariety_n and_o position_n of_o thing_n and_o their_o nature_n and_o quality_n must_v otherwise_o have_v be_v quite_o different_a and_o so_o our_o debate_n will_v be_v transfer_v quite_o to_o another_o world_n of_o another_o nature_n and_o constitution_n from_o that_o touch_v who_o eternity_n we_o now_o dispute_v the_o second_o proposition_n be_v this_o that_o whatsoever_o be_v subject_a to_o such_o alteration_n or_o corruption_n can_v possible_o be_v eternal_a at_o least_o unless_o we_o shall_v whole_o remove_v from_o it_o by_o a_o infinite_a duration_n that_o corruption_n or_o alteration_n to_o which_o it_o be_v thus_o necessary_o subject_a and_o so_o make_v it_o another_o thing_n than_o what_o indeed_o it_o be_v and_o because_o the_o due_a and_o clear_a explication_n of_o contrary_a active_a quality_n which_o mutual_o invade_v one_o another_o which_o position_n consider_v the_o frame_n and_o constitution_n at_o least_o of_o this_o inferior_a world_n be_v absolute_o necessary_a unless_o we_o shall_v make_v the_o world_n another_o thing_n and_o of_o another_o fabric_n than_o what_o it_o be_v as_o the_o moisture_n of_o the_o water_n be_v contiguous_a to_o the_o dryness_n of_o the_o earth_n and_o the_o heat_n of_o the_o sun_n be_v contiguous_a to_o the_o coldness_n and_o moisture_n of_o the_o water_n and_o can_v be_v otherwise_o in_o the_o constitution_n of_o the_o world_n as_o now_o it_o stand_v and_o consequent_o one_o must_v necessary_o work_v a_o alteration_n in_o the_o other_o i_o shall_v therefore_o pursue_v the_o same_o method_n and_o first_o consider_v such_o body_n as_o seem_v to_o have_v a_o intrinsic_a principle_n of_o alteration_n or_o corruption_n from_o the_o dissolubility_n of_o their_o part_n and_o the_o coadunition_n of_o several_a particle_n endue_v with_o contrary_a and_o destructive_a quality_n each_o to_o other_o or_o such_o as_o at_o least_o tend_v to_o a_o gradual_a alteration_n and_o second_o i_o shall_v prevalency_n and_o activity_n of_o the_o one_o or_o the_o other_o but_o before_o i_o come_v to_o either_o of_o the_o particular_n i_o shall_v premise_v some_o thing_n which_o will_v be_v of_o use_n in_o all_o that_o follow_v viz._n 1._o that_o precedaneous_a to_o all_o generation_n of_o any_o material_a be_v according_a to_o the_o course_n of_o nature_n which_o we_o see_v there_o must_v be_v a_o gradual_a preparation_n and_o alteration_n of_o the_o matter_n before_o there_o be_v a_o complete_a generation_n of_o any_o thing_n this_o we_o see_v in_o the_o casual_a production_n of_o infect_v and_o vegetable_n and_o in_o the_o natural_a production_n of_o mineral_n or_o meteor_n and_o in_o the_o regular_a production_n of_o animal_n and_o men._n 2._o that_o in_o thing_n which_o yet_o hold_v their_o essential_a consistency_n yet_o there_o be_v very_o many_o alteration_n not_o only_o accidental_a as_o where_o thing_n be_v rarify_v or_o condense_v or_o make_v hot_a from_o be_v cold_a or_o cold_a from_o be_v hot_a but_o also_o such_o as_o seem_v connatural_a to_o the_o species_n thus_o we_o see_v in_o a_o man_n first_o he_o be_v a_o weak_a little_a infant_n than_o a_o yâ—uâ—h_n than_o a_o man_n than_o he_o become_v a_o old_a man_n and_o yet_o continue_v still_o a_o man_n till_o his_o dissolution_n and_o to_o these_o various_a state_n of_o his_o age_n there_o seem_v to_o be_v various_a alteration_n accommodate_v as_o difference_n in_o stature_n bigness_n strength_n activity_n understanding_n and_o the_o same_o be_v observable_a in_o proportion_n to_o their_o capacity_n in_o animal_n vegetable_n mineral_n and_o the_o like_a 3._o that_o these_o alteration_n be_v necessary_o successive_a and_o gradual_a whether_o they_o be_v such_o as_o be_v preparative_n to_o generation_n or_o corruption_n of_o being_n or_o such_o as_o consist_v with_o the_o existence_n of_o the_o be_v they_o have_v as_o those_o alteration_n incident_a to_o the_o state_n of_o thing_n in_o their_o consistency_n yet_o they_o be_v not_o instantaneous_a but_o successive_a and_o gradual_a nay_o those_o very_a alteration_n that_o be_v wrought_v in_o thing_n by_o a_o external_a contrary_a agent_n yet_o they_o be_v not_o in_o a_o moment_n but_o gradual_a and_o successive_a which_o be_v partly_o by_o reason_n of_o the_o resistance_n in_o the_o patient_n and_o partly_o because_o the_o agent_n work_v upon_o the_o patient_n by_o a_o certain_a local_a motion_n of_o itself_o or_o part_n or_o of_o its_o virtue_n and_o activity_n which_o can_v be_v instantaneous_a and_o tota_fw-la simul_fw-la but_o gradual_a and_o successive_a thus_o the_o sun_n reduce_v the_o clay_n to_o its_o final_a degree_n of_o hardness_n and_o the_o wax_n to_o its_o final_a degree_n of_o softness_n successive_o and_o gradual_o the_o fire_n assimilate_v the_o stubble_n and_o convert_v it_o into_o fire_n not_o in_o a_o instant_n but_o by_o degree_n though_o soon_o or_o slow_o according_a to_o the_o vicinity_n of_o each_o and_o the_o precedaneous_a preparation_n of_o congruity_n of_o the_o stubble_n to_o be_v wrought_v upon_o by_o the_o fire_n 4._o that_o these_o alteration_n that_o be_v thus_o successive_a and_o gradual_a as_o they_o can_v be_v perfect_o instantaneous_a so_o it_o be_v impossible_a they_o can_v last_v or_o continue_v for_o a_o infinite_a or_o eternal_a duration_n the_o reason_n be_v because_o as_o they_o must_v have_v a_o inception_n of_o their_o motion_n so_o they_o must_v of_o necessity_n arrive_v to_o their_o compliment_n within_o the_o compass_n of_o time_n and_o can_v never_o hold_v out_o in_o their_o progress_n to_o a_o infinite_a duration_n let_v we_o suppose_v the_o fire_n and_o the_o stubble_n to_o have_v be_v create_v eternal_o contiguous_a one_o to_o another_o the_o fire_n can_v never_o have_v hold_v a_o infinite_a duration_n in_o consume_v that_o stubble_n for_o than_o it_o can_v never_o have_v be_v consume_v for_o that_o which_o have_v be_v burn_v a_o infinite_a time_n can_v never_o be_v burn_v no_o not_o so_o much_o as_o any_o part_n of_o it_o for_o if_o it_o have_v burn_v part_n after_o part_n the_o whole_a must_v needs_o be_v absume_v in_o a_o portion_n of_o time_n neither_o need_n we_o labour_v this_o for_o we_o see_v that_o the_o fire_n consume_v stubble_n or_o other_o combustible_a matter_n in_o a_o short_a portion_n of_o time_n and_o since_o if_o we_o talk_v of_o a_o eternity_n of_o the_o world_n or_o of_o any_o thing_n in_o it_o we_o must_v in_o common_a reason_n suppose_v it_o to_o be_v such_o as_o now_o it_o be_v we_o must_v necessary_o allow_v the_o like_a property_n activity_n nature_n and_o operation_n to_o thing_n as_o we_o find_v they_o now_o have_v and_o
eternal_a but_o must_v be_v do_v gradual_o and_o successive_o and_o from_o one_o degree_n of_o bigness_n to_o another_o and_o since_o that_o augmentation_n can_v never_o be_v of_o a_o infinite_a procedure_n but_o be_v successive_a we_o must_v come_v to_o the_o begin_n of_o that_o increase_n within_o the_o measure_n of_o such_o a_o portion_n of_o time_n as_o we_o now_o find_v sufficient_a for_o such_o a_o production_n or_o increase_n it_o may_v be_v two_o or_o three_o hundred_o year_n which_o be_v but_o a_o finite_a duration_n can_v never_o be_v eternal_a and_o this_o necessary_a supposition_n of_o a_o successive_a alteration_n or_o increase_n utter_o destroy_v the_o possibility_n of_o a_o eternal_a duration_n in_o any_o thing_n capable_a of_o such_o alteration_n 1._o be_v and_o what_o before_o it_o be_v not_o so_o that_o it_o have_v somewhat_o before_o its_o present_a state_n which_o state_v it_o to_o be_v what_o it_o now_o be_v namely_o that_o alteration_n or_o augmentation_n which_o so_o precede_v its_o present_a state_n and_o consequent_o that_o present_a state_n wherein_o it_o be_v can_v not_o be_v eternal_a for_o it_o have_v somewhat_o before_o it_o 2._o because_o that_o very_a alteration_n that_o antecede_v that_o state_n which_o it_o have_v can_v possible_o be_v eternal_a but_o must_v be_v perfect_v within_o a_o certain_a portion_n of_o time_n destine_v to_o it_o and_o consequent_o must_v have_v beginning_n within_o the_o compass_n of_o a_o determinate_a time_n and_o can_v be_v eternal_o move_v to_o its_o accomplishment_n and_o as_o this_o instance_n give_v the_o impossibility_n of_o a_o eternal_a existence_n in_o any_o thing_n essential_o alterable_a or_o corruptible_a so_o it_o will_v be_v possible_o more_o conspicuous_a in_o the_o contemplation_n of_o the_o humane_a nature_n if_o we_o shall_v suppose_v a_o man_n to_o have_v be_v eternal_a be_v that_o man_n ever_o a_o embryo_n a_o child_n a_o youth_n a_o ripe_a age_a man_n do_v he_o grow_v from_o a_o small_a stature_n to_o a_o great_a have_v he_o vicissitude_n of_o temperament_n and_o distemper_n do_v he_o eat_v digest_v etc._n etc._n if_o he_o do_v not_o than_o those_o eternal_a man_n be_v not_o of_o the_o same_o make_v with_o the_o man_n that_o be_v now_o but_o quite_o another_o thing_n which_o we_o know_v not_o what_o it_o be_v or_o where_o to_o find_v it_o but_o if_o he_o have_v all_o those_o change_n he_o can_v not_o be_v eternal_a he_o shall_v be_v eternal_o a_o child_n and_o eternal_o a_o man_n eternal_o young_a and_o eternal_o old_a yea_o eternal_o living_n and_o yet_o eternal_o dead_a for_o all_o these_o must_v fall_v within_o the_o compass_n of_o eternity_n 2._o but_o let_v we_o now_o consider_v how_o the_o case_n fall_v out_o in_o relation_n to_o alteration_n and_o corruption_n occasion_v ab_fw-la extrinseco_fw-la and_o we_o shall_v find_v 1._o that_o as_o the_o world_n be_v frame_v and_o as_o those_o that_o suppose_v it_o eternal_a must_v suppose_v it_o to_o have_v be_v always_o so_o frame_v there_o must_v necessary_o be_v incessant_a mutation_n alteration_n generation_n and_o corruption_n by_o the_o invasion_n and_o juxta-position_n of_o contrary_a nature_n agent_n patient_n quality_n motion_n the_o earth_n natural_o dry_a be_v moisten_v by_o the_o vicinity_n of_o the_o water_n and_o again_o dry_v by_o the_o heat_n of_o the_o sun_n the_o earth_n obstruct_v the_o fluidity_n of_o the_o water_n by_o mingle_v its_o grosser_n part_n with_o it_o all_o thing_n as_o it_o be_v in_o continual_a motion_n and_o agitation_n and_o mutual_a prey_v as_o it_o be_v one_o upon_o another_o which_o as_o necessary_o occasion_v mutation_n alteration_n generation_n and_o corruption_n as_o the_o very_o intrinsical_a dissolubility_n of_o the_o nature_n of_o mix_a body_n 2._o and_o as_o we_o find_v this_o now_o so_o we_o must_v suppose_v that_o this_o have_v be_v always_o so_o since_o the_o world_n have_v a_o be_v unless_o we_o shall_v suppose_v as_o i_o have_v often_o say_v another_o kind_n of_o world_n than_o what_o we_o see_v and_o although_o we_o be_v not_o acquaint_v with_o the_o state_n of_o thing_n out_o of_o or_o beyond_o this_o sublunary_a world_n in_o which_o we_o see_v this_o vicissitude_n of_o alteration_n yet_o whether_o there_o may_v not_o be_v some_o such_o mutation_n in_o the_o ethereal_a world_n we_o know_v not_o but_o there_o may_v be_v such_o though_o we_o can_v certain_o know_v they_o 3._o and_o yet_o it_o be_v most_o certain_a that_o it_o be_v impossible_a that_o any_o thing_n that_o be_v capable_a of_o these_o mutation_n and_o change_n can_v be_v eternal_o under_o they_o but_o must_v of_o necessity_n if_o it_o be_v eternal_a consist_v in_o such_o a_o state_n of_o fixedness_n and_o permanency_n that_o be_v not_o obnoxious_a to_o these_o change_n 4._o and_o since_o it_o be_v not_o possible_a for_o the_o inferior_a world_n at_o least_o to_o be_v de_fw-fr facto_fw-la one_o moment_n of_o time_n without_o these_o change_n and_o variation_n alteration_n generation_n and_o corruption_n which_o as_o before_o be_v not_o at_o all_o consistent_a with_o a_o eternal_a duration_n à _fw-la parte_fw-la ante_fw-la of_o that_o that_o be_v so_o subject_a to_o change_n we_o have_v just_a reason_n to_o deny_v and_o disesteem_v this_o imaginary_a eternity_n can_v belong_v at_o least_o to_o the_o sublunary_a world_n the_o late_a author_n of_o a_o book_n de_fw-fr aetate_fw-la mundi_fw-la have_v give_v we_o a_o instance_n herein_o that_o if_o it_o will_v hold_v we_o need_v not_o go_v far_o namely_o that_o the_o great_a rock_n in_o the_o sea_n be_v yet_o many_o of_o they_o eminent_o visible_a to_o this_o day_n and_o yet_o daily_a experience_n show_v we_o that_o those_o rock_n be_v gradual_o diminish_v by_o the_o beat_n of_o the_o sea_n against_o they_o which_o have_v they_o be_v so_o deal_v with_o from_o eternity_n though_o they_o lose_v but_o one_o grain_n in_o a_o million_o of_o million_o of_o year_n they_o will_v not_o have_v be_v but_o will_v have_v be_v consume_v a_o indefinite_a time_n long_o since_o elapse_v but_o the_o supposition_n fail_v because_o it_o may_v be_v that_o these_o rock_n have_v at_o least_o vicissitude_n of_o increase_n and_o diminution_n by_o the_o very_a alluvion_n of_o the_o sea_n or_o which_o seem_v far_o more_o easy_o suppose_v that_o the_o earth_n and_o sea_n may_v notwithstanding_o have_v be_v eternal_a but_o yet_o the_o sea_n may_v not_o have_v keep_v the_o same_o channel_n where_o these_o rock_n now_o be_v from_o eternity_n but_o gain_v it_o in_o time_n the_o ancient_n tell_v we_o that_o the_o great_a atlantic_a sea_n be_v for_o the_o most_o part_n of_o it_o ancient_o a_o continent_n or_o at_o least_o a_o great_a island_n as_o big_a as_o europe_n and_o asia_n and_o after_o swallow_v up_o and_o corrode_v into_o that_o vast_a sea_n call_v the_o atlantic_a ocean_n leave_v behind_o it_o coal_n rock_n especial_o of_o stone_n which_o from_o a_o sandy_a kind_n of_o earth_n gradual_o concoct_v into_o freestone_n when_o they_o be_v before_o earth_n as_o may_v be_v see_v in_o many_o simple_a natural_a earth_n without_o any_o such_o concretion_n or_o alteration_n in_o it_o if_o we_o shall_v say_v the_o latter_a we_o make_v the_o earth_n another_o thing_n than_o what_o in_o truth_n it_o now_o be_v which_o by_o the_o aid_n of_o the_o sun_n have_v these_o concretion_n and_o alteration_n even_o by_o a_o kind_n of_o necessity_n of_o nature_n wrought_v in_o it_o and_o beside_o if_o of_o god_n have_v be_v at_o so_o great_a a_o distance_n that_o they_o have_v not_o be_v perceptible_a by_o he_o he_o have_v want_v a_o great_a contribution_n to_o the_o perfect_a of_o his_o intellective_a faculty_n the_o divine_a wisdom_n and_o goodness_n have_v so_o order_v thing_n that_o he_o have_v not_o only_o that_o receptive_a faculty_n of_o sense_n especial_o that_o of_o sight_n but_o have_v also_o present_v to_o his_o view_n a_o great_a and_o considerable_a part_n of_o the_o universe_n with_o great_a advantage_n beauty_n and_o clearness_n the_o inferior_a or_o elementary_a world_n with_o all_o its_o variety_n and_o store_n and_o the_o prospect_n of_o the_o goodly_a celestial_a body_n their_o position_n motion_n beauty_n order_n and_o excellence_n and_o this_o goodly_a apparatus_fw-la of_o the_o universe_n thus_o objective_o derive_v to_o his_o understanding_n furnish_v it_o with_o a_o outward_a stock_n upon_o which_o it_o may_v trade_n and_o exercise_v itself_o be_v a_o object_n infinite_o too_o large_a for_o it_o but_o although_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o measure_n of_o his_o perfection_n he_o be_v a_o object_n unproportionate_a to_o a_o create_a understanding_n a_o light_n too_o bright_a and_o a_o ocean_n too_o large_a and_o too_o deep_a for_o it_o yet_o there_o be_v so_o much_o of_o his_o knowledge_n attainable_a by_o we_o as_o be_v sufficient_a for_o use_v nature_n and_o everlasting_a happiness_n and_o the_o knowledge_n of_o almighty_a god_n so_o far_o as_o it_o be_v attainable_a by_o our_o narrow_a create_a understanding_n high_o advance_v the_o humane_a understanding_n upon_o all_o account_n and_o infinite_o excel_v the_o knowledge_n of_o any_o other_o object_n in_o the_o world_n upon_o these_o ensue_a account_n among_o many_o other_o first_o it_o be_v a_o knowledge_n of_o such_o a_o object_n that_o have_v the_o great_a and_o most_o convince_a certainty_n in_o the_o world_n a_o certainty_n that_o he_o be_v be_v obvious_a to_o any_o person_n that_o have_v but_o the_o common_a use_n of_o reason_n and_o the_o honesty_n to_o use_v and_o exercise_v it_o sincere_o second_o it_o be_v the_o most_o noble_a and_o excellent_a object_n in_o the_o world_n and_o that_o may_v and_o do_v most_o ennoble_v and_o advance_v the_o intellective_a faculty_n he_o be_v the_o fountain_n of_o all_o be_v and_o of_o all_o nor_o overwhelm_v the_o understanding_n in_o its_o modest_a and_o due_a search_n into_o it_o and_o beside_o although_o the_o perfection_n of_o his_o essence_n and_o many_o of_o his_o attribute_n as_o infinitude_n immensity_n indivisibility_n etc._n etc._n do_v dazzle_v our_o understanding_n yet_o some_o of_o his_o attribute_n and_o the_o manifestation_n thereof_o be_v not_o only_o high_o etc._n etc._n if_o we_o attend_v to_o it_o and_o certain_o it_o be_v the_o great_a goodness_n and_o condescension_n of_o the_o glorious_a god_n unto_o his_o creature_n man_n that_o when_o he_o know_v all_o his_o own_o excellency_n be_v too_o great_a and_o too_o bright_a for_o we_o to_o see_v he_o have_v be_v please_v to_o discover_v so_o much_o of_o himself_o as_o be_v fit_a and_o necessary_a for_o we_o to_o know_v by_o mean_n that_o our_o faculty_n may_v use_v without_o dissipation_n distraction_n or_o too_o great_a astonishment_n namely_o first_o by_o his_o work_n reflect_v his_o man_n and_o without_o that_o tranquillity_n of_o mind_n that_o may_v make_v i_o a_o happy_a man_n but_o the_o true_a knowledge_n of_o god_n serious_o and_o real_o dwell_v and_o digest_v in_o the_o soul_n make_v a_o man_n a_o good_a man_n and_o a_o happy_a man_n it_o make_v a_o man_n to_o love_n fear_v honour_n and_o obey_v he_o that_o he_o thus_o know_v a_o man_n can_v true_o know_v he_o but_o receive_v and_o that_o measure_v of_o goodness_n that_o by_o the_o mean_n of_o that_o knowledge_n be_v wrought_v in_o the_o soul_n in_o this_o life_n shall_v then_o be_v improve_v to_o a_o high_a degree_n of_o excellence_n and_o reward_v with_o a_o weight_n of_o glory_n this_o knowledge_n therefore_o of_o all_o other_o knowledge_n be_v to_o be_v prefer_v and_o in_o all_o our_o busy_a inquisition_n touch_v other_o thing_n we_o must_v remember_v ourselves_o as_o our_o lord_n remember_v martha_n in_o the_o gospel_n we_o be_v busy_a about_o many_o thing_n and_o trouble_v ourselves_o
