tooth_n when_o the_o disease_n be_v in_o the_o head_n or_o heart_n they_o cry_v out_o o_o i_o have_v such_o wander_a thought_n in_o prayer_n and_o such_o a_o bad_a memory_n and_o so_o hard_a a_o it_o over_o if_o they_o will_v i_o beseech_v you_o in_o the_o name_n of_o god_n to_o know_v and_o consider_v what_o it_o be_v that_o god_n require_v of_o you_o he_o do_v not_o desire_v your_o over_o your_o fault_n or_o mince_v they_o and_o tell_v you_o of_o they_o in_o extenuate_a language_n which_o may_v hinder_v conviction_n and_o repentance_n much_o less_o silence_v they_o for_o fear_n of_o displease_v you_o but_o that_o they_o will_v deal_v free_o and_o faithful_o with_o you_o and_o see_v that_o you_o distaste_n they_o not_o and_o discountenance_v not_o their_o plain_a deal_n lest_o you_o discourage_v they_o and_o deprive_v your_o soul_n of_o so_o great_a a_o benefit_n think_v best_a of_o those_o as_o your_o great_a friend_n who_o be_v least_o friend_n to_o your_o sin_n and_o do_v most_o for_o your_o recovery_n very_o from_o it_o if_o you_o say_v alas_o i_o be_o not_o able_a to_o mortify_v my_o sin_n it_o be_v not_o in_o my_o power_n i_o answer_v 1._o i_o speak_v tenor_n of_o the_o new_a covenant_n can_v you_o doubt_v whether_o god_n be_v willing_a to_o give_v you_o christ_n and_o life_n when_o he_o have_v give_v they_o already_o even_o by_o a_o deed_n of_o that_o you_o frequent_o see_v a_o strong_a probability_n of_o your_o sincerity_n and_o may_v not_o that_o be_v a_o very_a great_a stay_n and_o comfort_n to_o your_o soul_n nay_o may_v it_o not_o draw_v out_o your_o heart_n in_o love_n delight_n and_o thankfulness_n suppose_v that_o your_o name_n be_v write_v in_o a_o piece_n of_o paper_n and_o put_v among_o a_o hundred_o or_o fifty_o or_o but_o twenty_o other_o like_a paper_n into_o a_o lottery_n and_o you_o be_v certain_a that_o you_o shall_v be_v the_o owner_n of_o this_o whole_a land_n except_o your_o name_n be_v draw_v the_o first_o time_n and_o if_o it_o be_v draw_v you_o shall_v die_v will_v your_o joy_n or_o your_o sorrow_n for_o this_o be_v the_o great_a nay_o if_o it_o be_v but_o ten_o to_o one_o or_o but_o two_o perish_v but_o have_v everlasting_a life_n he_o have_v no_o where_o except_v late_a believer_n or_o repenter_n show_v any_o such_o exception_n if_o you_o can_v 2._o the_o second_o sense_n in_o which_o under_o the_o most_o search_a lively_a sermon_n do_v continue_v secure_a and_o wilful_a in_o know_a wickedness_n either_o hate_v godliness_n and_o godly_a person_n and_o all_o that_o do_v reprove_v they_o or_o at_o least_o be_v â—â—â—â—pified_v that_o they_o feel_v no_o more_o than_o a_o post_n the_o force_n of_o god_n terror_n or_o the_o sweetness_n of_o his_o promise_n but_o make_v a_o jest_n go_v down_o to_o the_o heart_n and_o work_n on_o the_o will_n and_o so_o from_o command_v the_o action_n of_o the_o body_n this_o may_v befall_v a_o godly_a man_n and_o moreover_o god_n may_v withdraw_v his_o grace_n as_o he_o do_v from_o peter_n and_o david_n in_o their_o sin_n and_o then_o our_o consideration_n will_v work_v but_o faint_o and_o sensuality_n and_o sinful_a passion_n void_a of_o sound_a knowledge_n as_o he_o do_v in_o james_n and_o john_n when_o they_o will_v have_v call_v for_o fire_n from_o heaven_n but_o know_v not_o what_o spirit_n they_o be_v of_o for_o the_o doleful_a case_n of_o christ_n church_n in_o this_o age_n have_v put_v quite_o beyond_o dispute_n that_o none_o do_v the_o devil_n work_v more_o effectual_o nor_o oppose_v the_o kingdom_n of_o christ_n more_o desperate_o than_o they_o that_o have_v the_o hot_a zeal_n with_o the_o weak_a judgement_n and_o as_o fire_n be_v most_o excellent_a and_o necessary_a in_o the_o chimney_n but_o in_o the_o thatch_n it_o be_v worse_a than_o the_o vile_a dung_n so_o be_v zeal_n most_o excellent_a when_o guide_v by_o sound_a judgement_n but_o more_o destructive_a than_o profane_a sensuality_n when_o it_o be_v let_v loose_a and_o misguided_a on_o the_o other_o side_n you_o may_v decay_v much_o in_o feeling_n and_o fervour_n of_o affection_n and_o yet_o grow_v in_o grace_n if_o you_o do_v but_o grow_v in_o the_o understanding_n and_o the_o will._n and_o indeed_o this_o be_v the_o common_a growth_n which_o christian_n have_v in_o their_o age_n examine_v therefore_o whether_o you_o have_v this_o or_o no._n do_v you_o not_o understand_v the_o thing_n of_o the_o spirit_n better_o than_o you_o former_o do_v do_v you_o not_o value_n god_n christ_n glory_n and_o grace_n at_o high_a rate_n grow_v first_o in_o bulk_n and_o quantity_n and_o then_o in_o mellow_a sweetness_n be_v not_o you_o less_o censorious_a and_o more_o peaceable_a than_o heretofore_o i_o tell_v you_o that_o be_v a_o more_o noble_a growth_n than_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o austere_a and_o bitter_a youthful_a censorious_a divide_v zeal_n of_o many_o will_v prove_v mark_v most_o age_a experience_a christian_n that_o walk_v upright_o and_o you_o will_v find_v that_o they_o quite_o outstrip_v the_o young_a 1._o in_o experience_n knowledge_n prudence_n and_o foundness_n of_o judgement_n 2._o in_o well-setled_n resolution_n for_o christ_n his_o truth_n and_o cause_n 3._o in_o a_o love_n of_o peace_n especial_o in_o the_o church_n and_o a_o hatred_n of_o dissension_n perverse_a contending_n and_o division_n if_o you_o can_v show_v this_o growth_n say_v not_o that_o you_o do_v not_o grow_v 3._o but_o suppose_v you_o do_v not_o grow_v shall_v you_o therefore_o deny_v the_o sincerity_n of_o your_o grace_n i_o will_v not_o persuade_v any_o soul_n that_o they_o grow_v when_o they_o do_v not_o but_o if_o you_o do_v not_o be_v humble_v for_o it_o and_o endeavour_v it_o for_o the_o future_a make_v it_o your_o desire_n and_o daily_a business_n and_o spare_v not_o lie_v not_o still_o complain_v but_o rouse_v up_o your_o soul_n and_o see_v what_o be_v amiss_o and_o set_v upon_o neglect_a duty_n and_o of_o itself_o 2._o and_o that_o this_o shall_v be_v do_v to_o your_o pastor_n i_o will_v show_v you_o further_o anon_o 2._o but_o you_o must_v understand_v well_o when_o this_o be_v your_o duty_n 1._o not_o in_o every_o small_a infirmity_n which_o accompany_v christian_n in_o their_o daily_a most_o watchful_a conversation_n nor_o yet_o in_o every_o lesser_a doubt_n which_o may_v be_v otherways_o physician_n 2._o if_o the_o case_n be_v weighty_a and_o dangerous_a for_o than_o none_o but_o the_o more_o prudent_a advice_n be_v to_o be_v trust_v if_o you_o be_v strike_v with_o a_o dangerous_a disease_n i_o will_v not_o have_v you_o delay_v so_o long_o nor_o wrong_v yourself_o so_o much_o as_o to_o stay_v while_o you_o tamper_v with_o every_o woman_n medicine_n but_o go_v present_o to_o the_o physician_n so_o if_o you_o either_o fall_n into_o any_o grievous_a sin_n or_o any_o terrible_a pang_n of_o conscience_n or_o any_o great_a straits_n and_o difficulty_n about_o matter_n of_o doctrine_n or_o practice_n go_v present_o to_o your_o pastor_n for_o advice_n the_o devil_n and_o pride_n and_o bashfulness_n will_v do_v their_o utmost_a to_o hinder_v you_o but_o see_v that_o they_o ignorant_a be_v they_o never_o so_o honest_a else_o they_o may_v deceive_v you_o not_o know_v what_o they_o do_v either_o for_o want_v of_o understand_v the_o scripture_n and_o the_o nature_n of_o grace_n and_o sin_n or_o for_o want_v of_o skill_n to_o deal_v with_o both_o weak_a conscience_n and_o deep_a deceitful_a heart_n 2._o they_o must_v be_v true_o fear_v god_n and_o of_o experience_n in_o this_o great_a work_n for_o a_o trouble_a soul_n be_v seldom_o well_o resolve_v and_o comfort_v mere_o out_o of_o a_o book_n but_o from_o the_o book_n and_o experience_n both_o together_o carnal_a or_o formal_a man_n will_v but_o make_v a_o jest_n at_o the_o doubt_n of_o a_o trouble_a christian_n or_o at_o least_o will_v give_v you_o such_o formal_a remedy_n as_o will_v prove_v no_o cure_n either_o they_o will_v persuade_v you_o as_o the_o antinomian_o do_v that_o you_o shall_v trust_v god_n with_o your_o soul_n and_o never_o question_v your_o faith_n or_o that_o you_o do_v ill_a to_o trouble_v yourself_o about_o such_o thing_n or_o they_o will_v direct_v you_o only_o to_o the_o comfort_n of_o general_a grace_n and_o tell_v you_o only_o that_o god_n be_v merciful_a and_o christ_n die_v for_o sinner_n which_o be_v the_o necessary_a foundation_n of_o our_o peace_n but_o will_v not_o answer_v particular_a doubt_n of_o our_o own_o sincerity_n and_o of_o our_o interest_n in_o christ_n or_o else_o they_o will_v make_v you_o believe_v that_o holiness_n of_o heart_n and_o life_n which_o be_v the_o thing_n you_o look_v after_o be_v it_o that_o trouble_v you_o and_o breed_v all_o your_o scruple_n or_o else_o with_o the_o papist_n they_o will_v send_v you_o to_o your_o merit_n for_o comfort_n or_o to_o some_o vindictive_a penance_n in_o fast_n pilgrimage_n or_o the_o like_a or_o to_o some_o saint_n depart_v or_o angel_n or_o to_o the_o pardon_n or_o indulgency_n of_o the_o pope_n or_o to_o a_o certain_a formal_a carnal_a devotion_n to_o make_v god_n amends_o 3._o they_o must_v be_v man_n of_o downright_a faithfulness_n that_o will_v deal_v plain_o and_o free_o though_o not_o cruel_o and_o not_o like_o those_o tender_a surgeon_n that_o will_v leave_v the_o cure_n undo_v for_o fear_n of_o hurt_v meddle_v not_o with_o men-pleasers_a and_o dauber_n that_o will_v present_o speak_v comfort_n to_o you_o as_o confident_o as_o if_o they_o have_v know_v you_o twenty_o year_n when_o perhaps_o they_o know_v
