rod_n make_v more_o fearful_a to_o offend_v god_n and_o careful_a to_o please_v he_o and_o minister_v great_a and_o just_a cause_n of_o patient_a contentedness_n under_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n for_o who_o will_v not_o quiet_o and_o thankful_o put_v up_o that_o blow_n that_o shall_v beat_v he_o into_o heaven_n and_o keep_v he_o back_o from_o hell_n apollo_n you_o say_v right_a but_o how_o much_o do_v this_o bind_v chastisement_n they_o to_o all_o good_a patience_n and_o thankfulness_n in_o all_o their_o heavy_a chastening_n that_o over_o and_o above_o all_o which_o we_o have_v say_v it_o themselves_o this_o vice_n be_v not_o yet_o so_o mortify_v in_o the_o godly_a but_o though_o that_o it_o reign_v not_o yet_o it_o remain_v and_o dwell_v in_o they_o be_v ground_v upon_o and_o nourish_v by_o the_o good_a gift_n of_o god_n bestow_v on_o they_o which_o be_v the_o matter_n and_o food_n of_o pride_n we_o be_v so_o prone_a to_o pride_n and_o satan_n be_v such_o a_o cunning_a spirit_n of_o god_n work_v as_o by_o a_o instrument_n for_o the_o weaken_n and_o take_v down_o our_o fierce_a and_o haughty_a stomach_n for_o by_o our_o correction_n we_o be_v make_v to_o see_v our_o inbred_a pride_n whereupon_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o christian_a be_v move_v not_o only_o to_o confess_v 〈◊〉_d and_o 〈◊〉_d pardon_n for_o it_o and_o so_o to_o have_v it_o hide_v and_o cover_v by_o forgiveness_n but_o from_o the_o love_n and_o inordinate_a 〈◊〉_d which_o they_o bear_v unto_o themselves_o and_o their_o own_o endowment_n of_o nature_n and_o grace_n they_o be_v bring_v to_o have_v in_o themselves_o but_o mere_a beggary_n and_o want_v of_o all_o good_a and_o that_o to_o god_n alone_o belong_v all_o praise_n of_o all_o our_o goodness_n whatsoever_o and_o thus_o by_o their_o punishment_n they_o be_v humble_v in_o truth_n not_o in_o show_v only_o aquila_n i_o have_v hear_v yourself_o and_o some_o other_o speak_v high_o to_o the_o praise_n of_o humility_n as_o that_o it_o with_o their_o god_n and_o towards_o man_n all_o their_o life_n after_o for_o it_o be_v a_o consideration_n which_o sink_v deep_a into_o the_o child_n of_o god_n when_o they_o will_v bethink_v themselves_o that_o they_o be_v beat_v and_o by_o such_o a_o one_o as_o the_o great_a and_o good_a god_n &_o deserve_o too_o for_o just_a cause_n yea_o and_o so_o as_o other_o see_v their_o stripe_n and_o take_v knowledge_n that_o god_n be_v angry_a with_o they_o this_o make_v they_o hang_v down_o their_o head_n and_o abate_v their_o courage_n even_o as_o a_o ingenious_a scholar_n beat_v for_o a_o fault_n before_o all_o his_o fellow_n be_v much_o abash_v therewith_o so_o it_o fare_v with_o god_n child_n who_o yet_o be_v so_o humble_v and_o abase_v in_o their_o own_o eye_n by_o their_o blow_n and_o stroke_n as_o they_o learn_v great_a patience_n and_o thankfulness_n as_o well_o as_o humility_n because_o they_o receive_v all_o their_o chastisement_n as_o correction_n of_o a_o most_o admonish_v they_o of_o their_o sin_n past_a that_o they_o may_v turn_v and_o be_v more_o obedient_a for_o time_n to_o come_v and_o to_o abase_v the_o pride_n of_o their_o heart_n that_o they_o may_v carry_v themselves_o in_o all_o humbleness_n but_o withal_o he_o do_v take_v trial_n of_o the_o faith_n patience_n and_o love_n of_o his_o child_n and_o sometime_o it_o please_v he_o to_o inflict_v some_o grievous_a judgement_n upon_o they_o without_o any_o such_o respect_n at_o all_o as_o to_o correct_v their_o sin_n but_o mere_o for_o probation_n sake_n thus_o he_o deal_v with_o job_n whole_a affliction_n be_v not_o chastisement_n of_o his_o sin_n but_o trial_n of_o his_o faith_n and_o patience_n of_o this_o kind_n be_v such_o adversity_n and_o trouble_n as_o happen_v to_o abraham_n as_o when_o they_o fall_v into_o they_o they_o be_v will_v to_o 〈◊〉_d exceed_a joy_n because_o they_o serve_v for_o trial_n of_o their_o faith_n and_o therefore_o be_v call_v temptation_n 〈◊〉_d 1._o 2._o it_o be_v the_o pleasure_n of_o god_n as_o man_n try_v gold_n in_o a_o furnace_n so_o to_o try_v his_o child_n by_o affliction_n it_o stand_v with_o very_o good_a reason_n that_o god_n shall_v at_o his_o pleasure_n make_v trial_n of_o man_n to_o see_v what_o be_v in_o they_o see_v man_n do_v at_o their_o pleasure_n make_v trial_n of_o such_o thing_n and_o person_n as_o be_v in_o their_o power_n their_o horse_n their_o dog_n their_o servant_n their_o child_n and_o albeit_o time_n of_o prosperity_n be_v time_n of_o trial_n for_o therein_o both_o evil_a man_n make_v proof_n of_o their_o pride_n security_n and_o presumption_n and_o also_o the_o godly_a declare_v their_o modesty_n watchfulness_n and_o piety_n yet_o time_n of_o affliction_n be_v mere_a time_n of_o trial_n because_o as_o on_o the_o one_o side_n many_o vice_n be_v cover_v in_o the_o day_n of_o prosperity_n and_o peace_n which_o be_v lay_v open_a in_o the_o evil_a day_n as_o self-love_n love_n of_o this_o world_n impatiency_n vain_a confidence_n fear_n distrust_n and_o sundry_a other_o which_o affliction_n bring_v to_o light_v so_o on_o the_o other_o side_n there_o be_v sundry_a virtue_n of_o good_a man_n as_o their_o faith_n love_n obedience_n to_o god_n patience_n fear_v of_o god_n hope_v etc._n etc._n which_o be_v more_o better_o see_v and_o more_o manifest_v by_o affliction_n than_o out_o of_o affliction_n it_o be_v a_o easy_a thing_n when_o man_n have_v rest_n and_o riches_n to_o make_v profession_n and_o semblance_n of_o faith_n and_o piety_n now_o that_o it_o may_v be_v manifest_v who_o do_v it_o in_o truth_n who_o otherwise_o therefore_o god_n use_v to_o send_v affliction_n as_o touchstone_n to_o try_v the_o currant_n from_o the_o counterfeit_n and_o as_o fire_n to_o sever_v the_o dross_n from_o the_o pure_a silver_n there_o be_v much_o money_n look_v as_o fair_a as_o any_o currant_n money_n which_o yet_o be_v find_v to_o be_v vicious_a when_o it_o be_v bring_v to_o the_o touch_n to_o be_v try_v likewise_o very_a many_o there_o be_v who_o in_o the_o day_n of_o peace_n have_v face_n and_o appearance_n of_o good_a and_o faithful_a man_n who_o be_v make_v know_v in_o the_o hour_n of_o tribulation_n to_o be_v far_o otherwise_o then_o they_o seem_v to_o be_v the_o cross_n pluck_v the_o vizard_n of_o hypocrisy_n from_o their_o face_n and_o have_v unmask_v they_o make_v they_o to_o show_v what_o they_o be_v god_n himself_o need_v not_o to_o help_v his_o knowledge_n by_o these_o trial_n for_o he_o perfect_o know_v what_o be_v in_o we_o search_v our_o very_a heart_n and_o reins_n and_o indeed_o how_o shall_v he_o that_o make_v we_o be_v ignorant_a of_o we_o therefore_o these_o trial_n serve_v to_o lay_v we_o open_a not_o to_o his_o all-seeing_a eye_n leave_v without_o excuse_n such_o as_o find_v they_o have_v great_a strength_n of_o faith_n which_o think_v they_o have_v but_o a_o small_a faith_n and_o they_o also_o that_o presume_v of_o more_o then_o by_o experience_n they_o see_v in_o themselves_o the_o one_o shall_v be_v provoke_v to_o more_o thankfulness_n and_o joy_n the_o other_o to_o more_o humbleness_n and_o fear_n and_o both_o to_o a_o great_a patience_n consider_v the_o good_a that_o come_v to_o they_o by_o such_o trial_n for_o it_o be_v a_o great_a mercy_n of_o god_n in_o the_o trial_n of_o his_o child_n to_o enable_v they_o to_o know_v themselves_o better_a and_o to_o behold_v more_o clear_o both_o what_o they_o already_o have_v and_o what_o they_o want_v that_o they_o may_v so_o joy_v for_o the_o one_o as_o by_o the_o other_o they_o may_v be_v stir_v to_o a_o holy_a fear_n and_o earnest_a prayer_n for_o increase_v it_o be_v the_o great_a wisdom_n to_o know_v ourselves_o and_o our_o trial_n do_v teach_v we_o this_o wisdom_n for_o which_o cause_n they_o be_v with_o all_o patience_n to_o be_v endure_v especial_o since_o to_o they_o which_o be_v try_v and_o do_v endure_v there_o be_v promise_v a_o crown_n of_o glory_n in_o the_o life_n to_o come_v jame_v 1._o 12._o and_o even_o in_o this_o life_n the_o godly_a in_o trial_n and_o affliction_n have_v stick_v to_o god_n and_o follow_v his_o truth_n without_o shrink_v and_o so_o conceive_v better_a than_o before_o their_o trouble_n that_o their_o faith_n be_v strong_a and_o their_o love_n to_o god_n it_o be_v not_o for_o his_o benefit_n but_o for_o himself_o they_o be_v by_o this_o experience_n much_o encourage_v to_o praise_n god_n and_o to_o proceed_v more_o cheerful_o in_o the_o rest_n of_o their_o course_n and_o more_o and_o more_o to_o despise_v the_o wicked_a suggestion_n of_o satan_n call_v their_o faith_n and_o love_n in_o question_n both_o be_v prove_v to_o be_v sound_a inasmuch_o as_o even_o in_o great_a trial_n they_o still_o trust_v in_o god_n and_o their_o heart_n be_v still_o towards_o he_o to_o love_v and_o obey_v he_o as_o david_n say_v prince_n arise_v and_o speak_v against_o i_o yet_o do_v i_o not_o forget_v thy_o law_n psal._n 119._o again_o the_o proud_a have_v i_o in_o derision_n yet_o do_v i_o not_o decline_v from_o thy_o word_n of_o trial_n by_o conflict_n of_o conscience_n with_o sin_n aquila_n of_o all_o the_o trial_n of_o god_n child_n which_o do_v you_o hold_v to_o be_v great_a and_o full_a of_o difficulty_n to_o endure_v and_o glory_n to_o overcome_v apollo_n among_o the_o trial_n of_o god_n child_n some_o be_v but_o easy_a as_o to_o keep_v some_o earthly_a good_a thing_n from_o they_o which_o other_o have_v and_o they_o desire_v or_o to_o deny_v success_n to_o their_o labour_n or_o to_o grant_v but_o small_a success_n or_o to_o defer_v the_o hear_n of_o their_o prayer_n for_o a_o time_n and_o some_o less_o reproach_n and_o hindrance_n in_o their_o name_n &_o estate_n other_o trial_n be_v yet_o hard_o as_o the_o spoil_n of_o their_o good_n loss_n of_o liberty_n by_o imprisonment_n or_o banishment_n strange_a and_o long_a sickness_n in_o all_o which_o they_o have_v for_o ground_n of_o their_o patience_n the_o will_n of_o god_n who_o allot_v these_o thing_n to_o they_o his_o promise_n of_o turn_v all_o thing_n to_o the_o best_a for_o they_o &_o the_o example_n of_o the_o saint_n which_o have_v be_v put_v to_o endure_v the_o 〈◊〉_d and_o also_o have_v be_v both_o sustain_v in_o they_o and_o well_o bring_v through_o they_o but_o of_o all_o the_o trial_n their_o patience_n be_v most_o prove_v and_o approve_v by_o their_o endure_v the_o conflict_n of_o conscience_n for_o sin_n and_o the_o suffering_n of_o mattyrdome_n for_o the_o golpell_n this_o double_a trial_n for_o their_o sharpness_n and_o fierceness_n may_v well_o be_v call_v the_o fiery_a trial_n when_o either_o the_o conscience_n within_o be_v fright_v and_o astonish_v with_o fear_n of_o hell_n fire_n for_o the_o offence_n of_o god_n by_o sin_n or_o the_o body_n without_o be_v put_v to_o abide_v the_o flame_n of_o a_o temporary_a material_a fire_n for_o the_o name_n of_o jesus_n and_o sure_o the_o former_a invisible_a trial_n be_v almost_o unsupportable_a it_o be_v wondrous_a uncomfortable_a when_o the_o poor_a conscience_n have_v sin_n to_o surcharge_n and_o sting_n it_o satan_n to_o accuse_v the_o law_n to_o threaten_v god_n also_o appear_v as_o a_o bitter_a enemy_n show_v himself_o in_o great_a wrath_n as_o a_o severe_a judge_n to_o condemn_v the_o merciful_a promise_n and_o all_o thing_n else_o that_o shall_v breed_v comfort_n withdraw_v from_o the_o eye_n of_o faith_n or_o faith_n so_o dim_v and_o daunt_v that_o it_o can_v look_v up_o to_o christ._n this_o be_v indeed_o a_o heavy_a trial_n while_o a_o man_n spirit_n be_v firm_a and_o strong_a it_o bear_v out_o all_o affliction_n but_o when_o the_o spirit_n itself_o be_v wound_v who_o can_v bear_v that_o christ_n
