the_o world_n but_o prove_v too_o offensive_a to_o their_o call_n for_o see_v the_o best_a man_n can_v live_v with_o the_o best_a people_n but_o they_o shall_v receive_v some_o contagion_n from_o they_o how_o careful_o ought_v ordinary_a minister_n to_o make_v difference_n of_o man_n and_o meeting_n time_n and_o place_n and_o not_o diffuse_o and_o careless_o to_o thrust_v themselves_o into_o all_o so_o do_v shall_v they_o keep_v their_o call_n from_o much_o reproach_n and_o preserve_v themselves_o from_o much_o pollution_n which_o otherwise_o from_o their_o pollute_a people_n they_o people_n be_v among_o who_o he_o live_v the_o more_o careful_a must_v he_o be_v to_o keep_v himself_o clear_a from_o their_o pollution_n last_o here_o people_n be_v teach_v not_o to_o be_v too_o sharp_a condemner_n of_o those_o minister_n who_o conversation_n be_v not_o so_o unblameable_a as_o be_v to_o be_v wish_v for_o if_o they_o live_v ill_a general_o the_o cause_n be_v because_o they_o live_v among_o a_o ill_a people_n why_o then_o shall_v they_o so_o much_o condemn_v they_o for_o such_o fault_n as_o wherein_o themselves_o have_v make_v they_o faulty_a i_o say_v not_o but_o our_o church_n and_o state_n and_o ministry_n be_v to_o censure_v such_o man_n and_o it_o be_v good_a they_o do_v it_o more_o but_o it_o be_v against_o all_o reason_n the_o people_n shall_v do_v so_o the_o minister_n general_o be_v not_o clear_a from_o the_o same_o pollution_n and_o it_o be_v see_v that_o the_o best_a minister_n and_o most_o careful_a of_o all_o do_v complain_v bitter_o of_o the_o pollution_n of_o their_o people_n for_o that_o howsoever_o it_o may_v be_v they_o escape_v partake_v with_o their_o sin_n yet_o they_o always_o find_v at_o the_o least_o a_o dull_n and_o decay_v of_o god_n grace_n in_o themselves_o where_o the_o people_n be_v untoward_a and_o disobedient_a if_o therefore_o a_o minister_n live_v with_o such_o a_o people_n his_o case_n be_v pitiful_a and_o honour_n as_o be_v both_o a_o zealous_a minister_n and_o a_o holy_a man_n but_o he_o who_o god_n have_v bless_v with_o a_o good_a and_o tractable_a people_n and_o well_o affect_v to_o the_o word_n and_o yet_o himself_o live_v loose_o and_o scandalous_o among_o they_o a_o heavy_a burden_n and_o a_o hard_a account_n lie_v on_o that_o minister_n and_o no_o rebuke_n be_v too_o rough_a no_o punishment_n too_o great_a no_o censure_n too_o sharp_a for_o he_o and_o if_o this_o holy_a prophet_n fear_v so_o much_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n for_o his_o small_a pollution_n and_o yet_o live_v among_o so_o wicked_a and_o pollute_v a_o people_n than_o what_o heaviness_n and_o horror_n shall_v be_v heap_v on_o his_o soul_n who_o care_v not_o with_o how_o foul_a pollution_n his_o life_n be_v that_o they_o be_v something_o touch_v with_o their_o people_n pollution_n sin_n be_v not_o only_o as_o a_o poison_n spread_v from_o the_o heart_n to_o all_o part_n from_o the_o minister_n to_o the_o people_n but_o as_o a_o gangreve_v if_o it_o begin_v in_o the_o foot_n will_v without_o speedy_a prevention_n spread_v privy_o to_o the_o hart_n so_o sin_n show_v itself_o even_o from_o the_o people_n to_o the_o minister_n so_o great_a cause_n be_v there_o for_o all_o man_n to_o stop_v sin_n in_o the_o beginning_n to_o break_v it_o in_o the_o egg_n to_o give_v water_n no_o passage_n no_o not_o a_o little_a for_o let_v this_o gangreve_v begin_v at_o the_o foot_n it_o will_v not_o rest_v till_o it_o be_v in_o the_o heart_n for_o our_o confirmation_n we_o be_v here_o teach_v first_o if_o a_o minister_n by_o reason_n of_o the_o corruption_n of_o his_o own_o nature_n and_o the_o creep_a nature_n of_o sin_n be_v in_o such_o danger_n to_o be_v stain_v with_o the_o people_n pollution_n then_o let_v all_o minister_n desire_v and_o use_v all_o good_a mean_n to_o dwell_v with_o a_o people_n as_o little_o pollute_v as_o may_v be_v otherwise_o let_v he_o assure_v himself_o to_o be_v pollute_v with_o they_o which_o be_v both_o a_o great_a discomfort_n to_o his_o own_o conscience_n as_o here_o it_o be_v to_o the_o prophet_n and_o disgrace_n to_o his_o profession_n for_o if_o it_o be_v a_o duty_n of_o every_o good_a professor_n of_o religion_n to_o keep_v himself_o unspotted_a of_o the_o world_n 1.17_o then_o how_o much_o more_o be_v it_o the_o minister_n duty_n so_o to_o do_v and_o how_o foul_a a_o stain_n be_v it_o to_o the_o honour_n of_o his_o call_n to_o be_v pollute_v in_o the_o common_a pollution_n of_o his_o people_n it_o may_v be_v therefore_o good_a counsel_n to_o all_o godly_a minister_n in_o the_o place_n and_o dispose_n of_o themselves_o not_o to_o inquire_v only_o how_o good_a a_o live_n such_o and_o such_o a_o place_n be_v how_o well_o seat_v how_o healthful_a and_o beneficial_a it_o will_v be_v which_o be_v alas_o the_o common_a and_o almost_o the_o only_a question_n now_o adays_o but_o principal_o to_o regard_v what_o a_o people_n they_o be_v and_o how_o affect_v among_o who_o they_o be_v to_o live_v if_o godly_a and_o well_o dispose_v or_o at_o least_o tractable_a and_o gentle_a and_o willing_a to_o be_v teach_v then_o less_o to_o regard_v other_o incommodity_n but_o if_o wicked_a &_o profane_a or_o which_o be_v worse_o stubborn_a froward_a &_o untractable_a then_o less_o to_o regard_v the_o great_a commodity_n and_o certain_o if_o this_o point_n be_v well_o consider_v of_o and_o how_o bitter_a it_o have_v be_v in_o the_o end_n to_o many_o who_o have_v not_o regard_v it_o it_o will_v appear_v that_o this_o be_v the_o best_a encouragement_n or_o discouragement_n the_o great_a commodity_n or_o discommodity_n and_o the_o best_a reason_n either_o to_o win_v a_o man_n to_o a_o place_n or_o to_o draw_v he_o from_o it_o how_o good_a soever_o it_o be_v otherways_o they_o that_o neglect_v this_o duty_n and_o be_v lead_v or_o mislead_v rather_o with_o carnal_a and_o worldly_a respect_n how_o just_a be_v it_o upon_o they_o when_o they_o be_v make_v to_o cry_v in_o the_o sorrow_n of_o their_o soul_n woe_n be_v i_o i_o dwell_v in_o the_o midst_n of_o a_o people_n of_o pollute_a lip_n and_o here_o such_o minister_n as_o have_v poor_a live_n but_o good_a people_n let_v they_o not_o faint_v nor_o be_v discourage_v they_o have_v more_o cause_n to_o bless_v god_n then_o to_o be_v grieve_v for_o doubtless_o they_o be_v far_o better_o than_o those_o who_o have_v great_a live_n and_o a_o evil_a people_n but_o as_o for_o those_o to_o who_o god_n have_v be_v so_o good_a as_o to_o bestow_v upon_o they_o competent_a live_n and_o a_o willing_a and_o well_o dispose_v people_n let_v they_o think_v themselves_o double_o bless_v of_o god_n and_o treble_v bind_v to_o honour_n god_n and_o to_o do_v good_a in_o his_o themselves_o from_o all_o society_n with_o their_o people_n which_o be_v rather_o a_o cimical_a and_o fantastical_a than_o any_o way_n a_o religious_a practice_n so_o of_o all_o man_n be_v they_o to_o worthy_a the_o labour_n of_o king_n and_o prince_n to_o reform_v it_o and_o be_v a_o king_n evil_a nor_o to_o be_v heal_v but_o by_o the_o power_n of_o a_o king_n for_o as_o long_o as_o there_o be_v so_o few_o and_o mean_a preferment_n for_o painful_a minister_n there_o will_v never_o want_v abundance_n of_o such_o minister_n as_o do_v want_v either_o conscience_n or_o ability_n to_o discharge_v their_o duty_n in_o the_o mean_a time_n till_o god_n put_v into_o the_o heart_n of_o parliament_n and_o prince_n to_o look_v to_o this_o great_a and_o needful_a work_n let_v we_o minister_n learn_v our_o duty_n and_o first_o we_o who_o be_v in_o the_o university_n be_v here_o admonish_v to_o look_v to_o ourselves_o by_o god_n blessing_n we_o be_v many_o and_o daily_o grow_v more_o and_o more_o let_v we_o therefore_o so_o furnish_v ourselves_o as_o that_o when_o god_n or_o his_o church_n shall_v say_v who_o shall_v go_v for_o we_o and_o who_o shall_v i_o send_v then_o he_o may_v find_v many_o among_o we_o who_o he_o may_v send_v to_o that_o great_a work_n of_o the_o ministry_n and_o let_v we_o fear_v to_o be_v such_o as_o that_o god_n may_v affirm_v of_o we_o as_o in_o the_o day_n themselves_o and_o not_o for_o his_o sake_n or_o be_v minister_n do_v feed_v themselves_o and_o not_o their_o flock_n or_o preach_v themselves_o and_o not_o christ_n then_o have_v he_o not_o need_v to_o have_v make_v this_o proclamation_n for_o all_o age_n have_v yield_v store_n of_o such_o but_o contrariwise_o he_o that_o be_v painful_a and_o faithful_a in_o this_o function_n let_v he_o know_v be_v scarce_o to_o be_v find_v one_o of_o many_o who_o for_o his_o learning_n &_o other_o gift_n be_v fit_a to_o be_v send_v to_o the_o work_n of_o god_n nay_o their_o ignorance_n be_v palpable_a and_o ridiculous_a to_o the_o world_n until_o of_o late_a be_v by_o luther_n and_o other_o of_o our_o church_n make_v ashamed_a thereof_o they_o have_v labour_v especial_o the_o jesuit_n to_o become_v learn_v how_o foul_a a_o thing_n be_v it_o that_o among_o so_o many_o the_o lord_n shall_v have_v cause_n to_o complain_v who_o shall_v we_o send_v the_o jesuit_n indeed_o many_a of_o they_o be_v learn_v but_o for_o other_o quality_n they_o be_v fit_a to_o be_v plotter_n &_o practiser_n in_o state_n matter_n spy_n or_o intelligencer_n reconciler_n seducer_n and_o subverter_n than_o minister_n few_o out_o of_o many_o millionsâ—_n &_o then_o even_o for_o learning_n also_o god_n may_v cry_v and_o call_v &_o proclaim_v in_o their_o monastery_n who_o shall_v i_o send_v and_o if_o it_o be_v a_o shame_n and_o misery_n to_o a_o church_n to_o want_v such_o as_o god_n may_v send_v or_o to_o have_v but_o a_o few_o than_o the_o romish_a church_n be_v shameless_a which_o shame_v not_o to_o have_v so_o many_o and_o yet_o among_o they_o all_o who_o god_n may_v send_v almost_o none_o in_o the_o next_o place_n by_o this_o inquiry_n and_o question_v make_v by_o god_n who_o shall_v i_o send_v and_o who_o shall_v go_v for_o we_o the_o lord_n will_v teach_v we_o that_o no_o man_n be_v to_o undertake_v this_o function_n unless_o god_n call_v and_o send_v he_o therefore_o here_o be_v condemn_v the_o profane_a fancy_n of_o the_o anabaptist_n and_o all_o like_o they_o who_o think_v that_o any_o man_n upon_o a_o private_a motion_n may_v step_v forth_o and_o undertake_v the_o duty_n of_o a_o he_o even_o so_o all_o good_a minister_n be_v to_o stay_v god_n call_v if_o any_o ask_v how_o he_o shall_v know_v when_o god_n call_v he_o i_o answer_v god_n call_v ordinary_o by_o his_o church_n her_o voice_n be_v he_o therefore_o whensoever_o the_o church_n of_o god_n say_v unto_o thou_o thou_o shall_v be_v send_v and_o thou_o shall_v go_v for_o we_o even_o than_o do_v the_o lord_n call_v of_o season_n to_o preach_v and_o exhort_v to_o comfort_v and_o rebuke_v public_o and_o private_o to_o good_a to_o bad_a when_o it_o be_v well_o take_v when_o it_o be_v ill_o take_v when_o they_o willing_o receive_v it_o and_o when_o they_o stubborn_o resist_v it_o when_o they_o commend_v he_o and_o reward_v he_o and_o when_o they_o rail_v at_o he_o and_o persecute_v he_o for_o it_o thus_o must_v he_o be_v diligent_a in_o season_n &_o out_o of_o season_n for_o the_o least_o negligence_n in_o his_o duty_n or_o omit_v the_o least_o opportunity_n of_o do_v good_a will_v when_o god_n visit_v his_o conscience_n be_v a_o burden_n and_o vexation_n to_o he_o as_o it_o be_v here_o to_o the_o prophet_n and_o furthermore_o if_o these_o small_a sin_n thus_o afflict_v the_o prophet_n then_o alas_o what_o be_v to_o be_v think_v of_o those_o minister_n who_o make_v no_o conscience_n of_o foul_a &_o scandalous_a sin_n how_o shall_v simony_n incontinency_n usury_n inhospitality_n covetousness_n ignorance_n idleness_n careless_a nonresidencie_n how_o shall_v these_o i_o say_v and_o other_o like_o grievous_a crime_n oppress_v and_o burden_n the_o soul_n when_o as_o the_o small_a sin_n do_v so_o affright_v this_o holy_a man_n sure_o when_o god_n shall_v visit_v they_o their_o state_n will_v be_v most_o fearful_a nor_o shall_v any_o man_n case_n be_v so_o miserable_a as_o a_o unconscionable_a minister_n and_o though_o now_o such_o loose_a and_o licentious_a minister_n seem_v to_o live_v in_o jolitie_n &_o without_o â—ny_a fear_n yet_o when_o god_n shall_v appear_v â—nto_o their_o conscience_n then_o will_v they_o cry_v out_o in_o fearful_a anguish_n woe_n be_v i_o i_o be_o undo_v and_o again_o if_o these_o small_a fault_n so_o affright_v this_o holy_a prophet_n and_o burden_v his_o conscience_n then_o what_o pitiful_a conscience_n have_v those_o minister_n who_o daily_a negligence_n and_o unconscionable_a carelessness_n in_o their_o place_n be_v such_o as_o all_o man_n speak_v of_o and_o yet_o they_o be_v not_o touch_v sure_o these_o man_n be_v not_o of_o so_o tender_a conscience_n as_o the_o prophet_n be_v and_o either_o the_o prophet_n here_o be_v much_o more_o nice_a than_o need_v or_o else_o these_o man_n will_v prove_v to_o be_v in_o a_o miserable_a estate_n last_o let_v minister_n of_o care_n and_o conscience_n be_v here_o comfort_v in_o the_o examble_n of_o the_o prophet_n who_o be_v there_o but_o may_v find_v imperfection_n and_o blemish_n in_o himself_o which_o will_v often_o make_v he_o cry_v out_o woe_n be_v i_o but_o let_v not_o that_o discomfort_n they_o but_o rather_o rejoice_v that_o they_o can_v see_v their_o own_o weakness_n as_o the_o prophet_n do_v here_o if_o they_o have_v cause_n to_o exclaim_v against_o themselves_o they_o be_v not_o alone_o as_o be_v this_o and_o all_o other_o holy_a prophet_n case_n before_o they_o in_o have_v imperfection_n in_o themselves_o they_o be_v no_o more_o miserable_a than_o the_o prophet_n be_v but_o let_v they_o labour_n to_o be_v as_o bless_v in_o see_v &_o complain_v of_o themselves_o as_o he_o be_v and_o let_v every_o minister_n assure_v himself_o that_o the_o more_o he_o make_v conscience_n even_o of_o the_o least_o sin_n of_o all_o the_o more_o he_o resemble_v the_o ancient_a holy_a prophet_n &_o the_o more_o likely_a be_v he_o to_o work_v effectual_o in_o his_o ministry_n for_o his_o duty_n be_v to_o work_v in_o his_o people_n a_o conscience_n not_o of_o great_a sin_n only_o but_o even_o of_o all_o but_o how_o can_v he_o do_v that_o to_o they_o if_o he_o have_v not_o first_o of_o all_o do_v it_o in_o himself_o hence_o it_o be_v therefore_o that_o godly_a minister_n find_v fault_n with_o themselves_o when_o other_o man_n can_v and_o cry_v out_o against_o themselves_o for_o their_o pollution_n with_o the_o prophet_n here_o when_o no_o other_o man_n can_v accuse_v they_o of_o the_o least_o crime_n nay_o when_o other_o do_v magnify_v god_n for_o his_o grace_n on_o they_o and_o praise_v their_o gift_n and_o commend_v their_o good_a life_n even_o then_o do_v they_o condemn_v themselves_o and_o exclaim_v against_o their_o own_o corruption_n and_o their_o own_o small_a negligence_n or_o omission_n be_v great_a wound_n to_o their_o conscience_n &_o their_o last_o sin_n and_o their_o most_o pardonable_a infirmity_n be_v sore_a of_o his_o pollution_n particular_o he_o exclaim_v against_o the_o pollution_n of_o his_o â—ippes_n but_o why_o will_v some_o say_v complain_v he_o of_o the_o pollution_n of_o his_o â—ippes_n rather_o than_o of_o his_o heart_n or_o his_o hand_n or_o any_o other_o part_n of_o he_o be_v they_o not_o all_o pollute_a yes_o all_o in_o some_o measure_n and_o be_v not_o he_o grieve_v at_o they_o all_o yes_o assure_o we_o must_v grant_v that_o also_o but_o the_o reason_n be_v he_o be_v a_o prophet_n his_o duty_n be_v to_o use_v his_o tongue_n the_o practice_n of_o his_o call_n consist_v in_o the_o use_n of_o his_o tongue_n for_o a_o minister_n be_v a_o interpeter_n as_o he_o be_v call_v job._n 33.23_o that_o be_v the_o people_n to_o god_n by_o prayer_n and_o god_n to_o the_o people_n by_o preach_v he_o be_v god_n mouth_n and_o the_o people_n mouth_n so_o that_o the_o tongue_n of_o a_o minister_n be_v that_o part_n of_o his_o body_n which_o be_v to_o be_v use_v as_o a_o principal_a instrument_n of_o god_n glory_n and_o more_o to_o the_o setttng_a forth_o of_o his_o honour_n then_o any_o other_o now_o every_o man_n be_v to_o be_v try_v what_o he_o be_v by_o his_o call_n rather_o than_o by_o any_o other_o accidental_a or_o collateral_a course_n therefore_o the_o honour_n or_o dishonour_n of_o a_o minister_n be_v the_o use_n or_o the_o abuse_n of_o his_o tongue_n and_o his_o comfort_n or_o discomfort_n be_v the_o well_o use_v or_o not_o use_v of_o it_o the_o prophet_n therefore_o here_o affright_v at_o god_n presence_n and_o therefore_o retire_v into_o himself_o present_o his_o conscience_n check_n he_o for_o his_o most_o proper_a sin_n nam_o for_o some_o fault_n or_o negligence_n in_o his_o ministry_n which_o be_v the_o proper_a sin_n of_o that_o call_n and_o therefore_o be_v it_o that_o he_o exclaim_v against_o the_o pollution_n of_o his_o lip_n out_o of_o which_o practice_n of_o his_o we_o may_v learn_v first_o the_o vanity_n of_o the_o papist_n who_o far_o from_o a_o conceit_n of_o his_o own_o worth_n that_o he_o cry_v out_o woe_n be_v i_o i_o be_o undo_v how_o then_o can_v we_o who_o be_v no_o better_o but_o rather_o worse_a than_o he_o stand_v before_o god_n in_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n in_o the_o great_a appear_v of_o his_o infinite_a justice_n and_o glory_n rather_o doubtless_o as_o here_o the_o small_a pollution_n of_o his_o lip_n and_o negligence_n in_o his_o call_n drive_v he_o out_o of_o all_o conceit_n of_o merit_n when_o once_o he_o come_v into_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n so_o the_o due_a consideration_n of_o our_o so_o many_o and_o foul_a pollution_n above_o he_o shall_v beat_v down_o all_o proud_a
conceit_n of_o our_o own_o goodness_n when_o we_o appear_v before_o god._n it_o be_v therefore_o to_o be_v fear_v that_o the_o papist_n who_o thus_o magnify_v their_o own_o merit_n do_v seldom_o or_o never_o enter_v into_o earnest_a consideration_n of_o their_o own_o infirmity_n and_o do_v seldom_o present_v themselves_o in_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n majesty_n for_o if_o they_o do_v then_o doubtless_o the_o least_o sight_n of_o their_o least_o pollution_n will_v make_v they_o far_o from_o ever_o think_v of_o their_o own_o merit_n they_o also_o tell_v we_o of_o work_n of_o superrerogation_n but_o it_o seem_v here_o this_o holy_a prophet_n have_v none_o of_o they_o and_o they_o teach_v a_o man_n may_v in_o this_o life_n perfect_o fulfil_v the_o law_n but_o who_o can_v do_v it_o if_o not_o minister_n and_o what_o minister_n if_o not_o extraordinary_a prophet_n and_o yet_o isaiah_n the_o first_o and_o chief_a of_o they_o exclaim_v here_o in_o pitiful_a manner_n against_o his_o pollution_n doubtless_o if_o the_o papist_n will_v cease_v flatter_a â—orâ—mselues_n and_o not_o examine_v their_o conscience_n by_o their_o own_o please_a corruption_n but_o present_v themselves_o in_o the_o face_n and_o presence_n of_o god_n majesty_n they_o will_v be_v far_o from_o these_o conceit_n in_o the_o next_o place_n whereas_o the_o prophet_n complain_v of_o the_o pollution_n of_o his_o lip_n as_o of_o the_o peculiar_a sin_n of_o his_o place_n minister_n be_v here_o teach_v to_o avoid_v that_o sin_n above_o all_o other_o and_o to_o labour_v in_o that_o duty_n above_o any_o other_o for_o the_o do_n of_o it_o be_v his_o most_o comfort_n the_o want_n of_o it_o be_v his_o most_o vexation_n his_o tongue_n be_v the_o instrument_n give_v he_o to_o honour_n god_n if_o he_o use_v it_o well_o it_o yield_v he_o comfort_n more_o than_o any_o other_o duty_n but_o if_o he_o use_v not_o or_o abuse_v his_o tongue_n the_o pollution_n of_o his_o lip_n will_v be_v the_o heavy_a burden_n of_o all_o they_o therefore_o be_v great_o deceive_v who_o think_v a_o minister_n to_o discharge_v sufficient_o his_o duty_n though_o he_o preach_v not_o if_o he_o keep_v good_a hospitality_n and_o make_v peace_n among_o his_o 〈◊〉_d and_o perform_v other_o work_n of_o charity_n and_o good_a life_n for_o if_o a_o minister_n have_v not_o this_o virtue_n he_o have_v none_o if_o he_o preach_v not_o if_o heâ—_n abuse_v his_o lip_n or_o if_o he_o open_v they_o not_o he_o have_v no_o conscience_n nor_o can_v have_v any_o comfort_n for_o that_o be_v the_o principal_a duty_n of_o a_o minister_n though_o all_o the_o other_o be_v require_v to_o make_v â—him_n complete_a the_o want_n of_o they_o may_v condemn_v he_o before_o man_n but_o it_o be_v the_o pollution_n of_o his_o lip_n which_o present_o check_n he_o before_o god_n as_o we_o see_v here_o in_o this_o holy_a prophet_n the_o conclusion_n than_o be_v to_o every_o minister_n that_o if_o he_o have_v all_o the_o virtue_n and_o good_a property_n that_o can_v commend_v a_o man_n in_o the_o world_n yet_o if_o his_o lip_n be_v pollute_v either_o by_o not_o preach_v or_o by_o negligent_a idle_a or_o careless_a preach_n this_o pollution_n will_v so_o stain_v his_o conscience_n and_o so_o burden_n he_o in_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n that_o the_o time_n will_v come_v notwithstanding_o all_o his_o other_o good_a quality_n he_o will_v cry_v out_o in_o far_o more_o pitiful_a manner_n then_o here_o the_o prophet_n do_v woe_n be_v i_o i_o be_o undo_v because_o i_o be_o a_o man_n of_o pollute_a lip_n it_o follow_v and_o i_o dwell_v in_o the_o midst_n of_o a_o people_n of_o pollute_a lip_n the_o prophet_n not_o only_a complaineâ—_n of_o his_o own_o pollution_n but_o of_o his_o people_n also_o among_o who_o he_o live_v and_o this_o he_o do_v for_o these_o cause_n first_o to_o teach_v we_o that_o it_o be_v the_o minister_n duty_n to_o confess_v not_o only_o his_o own_o sin_n but_o the_o sin_n of_o his_o people_n and_o to_o complain_v of_o they_o to_o god_n for_o as_o he_o be_v the_o people_n interperter_n to_o god_n he_o must_v not_o think_v it_o enough_o to_o put_v up_o their_o petition_n to_o unfold_v their_o want_n and_o to_o crave_v relief_n for_o they_o at_o god_n hand_n but_o he_o must_v further_o take_v knowledge_n of_o the_o sin_n of_o his_o people_n and_o make_v both_o public_a and_o private_a confession_n of_o they_o to_o god_n and_o the_o more_o particular_o he_o can_v do_v this_o the_o better_a and_o this_o he_o be_v to_o do_v both_o for_o the_o people_n good_a and_o for_o his_o own_o also_o because_o it_o can_v be_v but_o that_o the_o sin_n of_o his_o people_n be_v in_o some_o sort_n he_o for_o this_o be_v the_o peculiar_a danger_n of_o the_o magistrate_n and_o minister_n call_v that_o general_o the_o sin_n of_o their_o people_n be_v they_o i_o mean_v that_o they_o be_v accessary_a to_o the_o sin_n of_o their_o people_n either_o by_o provoke_v they_o by_o their_o evil_a 〈◊〉_d or_o by_o not_o reprove_v or_o not_o hinder_v or_o suffer_v or_o wink_v or_o cover_v and_o conceal_v or_o not_o punish_v they_o or_o not_o careful_o enough_o use_v mean_n to_o prevent_v they_o by_o all_o which_o mean_n and_o many_o more_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o the_o people_n sin_n be_v the_o minister_n by_o communication_n so_o that_o as_o well_o for_o his_o own_o sake_n as_o they_o he_o be_v to_o confess_v to_o god_n their_o sin_n as_o well_o as_o his_o own_o now_o if_o a_o minister_n must_v confess_v his_o people_n sin_n than_o it_o follow_v consequent_o that_o he_o must_v know_v they_o and_o take_v notice_n of_o they_o for_o else_o he_o can_v confess_v they_o and_o this_o be_v one_o cause_n why_o the_o holy_a ghost_n command_v a_o pastor_n to_o know_v his_o flock_n 27.23_o he_o must_v not_o only_o have_v a_o flock_n and_o know_v which_o be_v his_o flock_n or_o have_v a_o general_a eye_n over_o it_o but_o he_o must_v have_v a_o particular_a and_o distinct_a knowledge_n of_o the_o state_n of_o it_o and_o the_o more_o particular_a the_o better_o and_o if_o the_o minister_n ought_v to_o know_v his_o people_n sin_n than_o it_o follow_v first_o that_o it_o be_v best_o for_o a_o minister_n to_o be_v present_a with_o his_o people_n that_o so_o he_o may_v better_o know_v they_o and_o their_o state_n and_o certain_o if_o it_o be_v a_o minister_n duty_n to_o confess_v to_o god_n the_o pollution_n of_o his_o people_n then_o wilful_a and_o careless_a nonresidency_n and_o all_o absence_n without_o just_a and_o conscionable_a cause_n must_v needs_o be_v a_o foul_a and_o fearful_a sin_n for_o how_o can_v isayah_n have_v confess_v he_o dwell_v in_o the_o midst_n of_o a_o people_n of_o pollute_a lip_n but_o that_o he_o dwell_v among_o they_o nay_o say_v the_o prophet_n he_o dwell_v in_o the_o midst_n among_o they_o indeed_o well_o may_v he_o know_v and_o confess_v his_o people_n pollution_n that_o dwell_v in_o the_o midst_n among_o they_o again_o if_o the_o minister_n be_v to_o confess_v his_o people_n sin_n and_o therefore_o must_v needs_o know_v they_o than_o it_o follow_v also_o that_o they_o must_v discover_v &_o confess_v they_o unto_o he_o or_o else_o it_o be_v not_o possible_a he_o shall_v perfect_o know_v their_o estate_n the_o want_n of_o this_o be_v a_o great_a fault_n in_o our_o church_n for_o however_o we_o condemn_v auricular_a confession_n as_o a_o very_a policy_n in_o the_o deviser_n and_o as_o a_o rack_n to_o the_o conscience_n of_o poor_a christian_n yet_o we_o not_o only_o allow_v but_o call_v different_a nature_n and_o property_n of_o sin_n and_o holiness_n sin_n even_o the_o least_o sin_n nay_o a_o very_a sinfulness_n of_o nature_n make_v a_o man_n afraid_a of_o god_n presence_n that_o sin_n unrepented_a of_o do_v so_o appear_v in_o adam_n who_o as_o in_o his_o integrity_n he_o speak_v and_o converse_v even_o in_o a_o familiar_a sort_n with_o god_n so_o no_o soon_o have_v he_o sin_v but_o he_o run_v from_o god_n and_o hide_v himself_o and_o that_o even_o the_o least_o sin_n not_o repent_v of_o do_v so_o also_o appear_v in_o this_o prophet_n who_o be_v a_o holy_a man_n yet_o his_o conscience_n be_v privy_a to_o itself_o of_o some_o small_a omission_n or_o negligence_n in_o his_o call_n he_o cry_v out_o he_o be_v undo_v because_o he_o see_v the_o lord_n of_o host_n but_o contrariwise_o the_o state_n of_o perfect_a holiness_n and_o the_o want_n of_o all_o sin_n make_v a_o man_n bold_a in_o god_n presence_n and_o rather_o desirous_a then_o afraid_a to_o behold_v god_n glory_n which_o shall_v be_v most_o apparent_a at_o the_o last_o day_n for_o when_o the_o wicked_a shall_v desire_v rather_o to_o be_v cover_v with_o the_o hill_n 6.16_o and_o ground_n to_o dust_n by_o the_o mountain_n then_o to_o appear_v before_o the_o face_n of_o god_n 26.27_o then_o shall_v the_o godly_a who_o holiness_n shall_v then_o be_v perfect_a look_v up_o and_o â—ift_v up_o their_o head_n because_o their_o redemption_n be_v so_o nigh_o and_o job_n testify_v of_o himself_o that_o he_o know_v his_o redeemer_n live_v &_o that_o he_o shall_v stand_v before_o he_o and_o look_v upon_o he_o with_o his_o eye_n thus_o as_o guiltiness_n drive_v a_o man_n from_o the_o king_n presence_n but_o innocence_n make_v he_o bold_a before_o he_o so_o sinfulness_n make_v a_o man_n avoid_v god_n presence_n but_o holiness_n make_v he_o draw_v near_o unto_o god_n and_o to_o rejoice_v in_o his_o presence_n then_o for_o a_o conclusion_n of_o this_o point_n let_v all_o man_n here_o learn_v the_o way_n to_o true_a courage_n and_o boldness_n before_o god_n namely_o to_o repent_v daily_o of_o their_o sin_n and_o labour_n to_o grow_v in_o true_a holiness_n wealth_n nor_o wit_n learning_n nor_o authoâ—itie_n can_v do_v this_o for_o thou_o but_o only_o a_o good_a conscience_n which_o must_v be_v make_v good_a by_o grace_n &_o by_o repentance_n then_o shall_v thou_o rejoice_v in_o god_n presence_n in_o this_o world_n and_o delight_n to_o think_v of_o god_n to_o speak_v of_o god_n to_o pray_v unto_o he_o to_o meet_v he_o in_o his_o word_n and_o sacrament_n and_o at_o the_o last_o day_n shall_v thou_o stand_v with_o confidence_n before_o the_o throne_n of_o his_o glory_n hithereto_o of_o the_o fear_n and_o astonishment_n of_o the_o prophet_n and_o of_o the_o cause_n thereof_o matter_n of_o the_o consolation_n be_v last_o in_o order_n let_v we_o therefore_o first_o speak_v of_o the_o circumstance_n the_o first_o circumstance_n time_n be_v the_o time_n when_o this_o prophet_n be_v comfort_v and_o raise_v from_o his_o fear_n then_o say_v the_o text_n that_o be_v after_o his_o fear_n and_o astonishment_n but_o not_o afore_o thus_o deal_v god_n always_o with_o all_o his_o saint_n he_o bestow_v no_o grace_n on_o they_o pertain_v to_o salvation_n but_o after_o he_o have_v by_o some_o mean_n or_o other_o bring_v they_o to_o true_a humiliation_n in_o themselves_o and_o to_o sorrow_n for_o their_o sin_n humiliation_n be_v the_o preparative_n for_o grace_n for_o when_o by_o sight_n and_o sense_n of_o their_o sin_n and_o their_o own_o misery_n by_o sin_n he_o have_v even_o drive_v
