learned_a sort_n of_o those_o which_o flourish_v in_o sanctity_n but_o it_o be_v common_o find_v in_o the_o simple_a and_o ignorant_a as_o well_o man_n as_o woman_n and_o even_o in_o all_o those_o who_o have_v learned_a to_o lead_v a_o christian_a life_n by_o this_o effect_n therefore_o we_o may_v prove_v the_o verity_n of_o out_o faith_n almighty_a god_n be_v a_o pure_a act_n the_o first_o affair_n what_o be_v the_o reason_n be_v it_o because_o he_o can_v or_o because_o he_o know_v not_o how_o to_o govern_v they_o or_o last_o because_o he_o will_v not_o none_o of_o these_o can_v be_v imagine_v of_o god_n for_o shall_v we_o think_v of_o god_n that_o he_o can_v or_o know_v not_o how_o to_o execute_v that_o which_o man_n both_o know_v and_o also_o be_v able_a to_o do_v and_o if_o but_o a_o good_a man_n who_o have_v ability_n and_o skill_n to_o order_v affair_n be_v also_o ever_o willing_a of_o his_o own_o part_n to_o do_v it_o shall_v we_o think_v of_o god_n who_o be_v most_o able_a most_o skilful_a and_o wise_a and_o also_o infinite_o good_a that_o he_o shall_v be_v less_o willing_a again_o if_o god_n almighty_n have_v not_o care_n of_o humane_a affair_n why_o have_v he_o give_v man_n such_o a_o natural_a instinct_n and_o inclination_n to_o worship_v he_o god_n and_o nature_n we_o use_v to_o say_v do_v nothing_o in_o vain_a we_o conclude_v therefore_o that_o it_o be_v a_o argument_n only_o of_o madness_n or_o a_o distemper_a mind_n to_o say_v there_o be_v no_o god_n or_o that_o god_n be_v but_o have_v not_o providence_n or_o care_n over_o we_o man_n and_o that_o it_o be_v the_o part_n &_o duty_n of_o a_o wife_n man_n not_o only_o to_o know_v but_o continual_o to_o consider_v that_o there_o be_v a_o governor_n over_o the_o world_n who_o have_v the_o same_o particular_a providence_n over_o man_n that_o he_o have_v over_o other_o natural_a thing_n that_o be_v to_o conduct_v &_o guide_v they_o all_o by_o due_a mean_n unto_o their_o proper_a and_o last_o end_n and_o because_o it_o be_v his_o property_n to_o dispose_v all_o thing_n sweet_o he_o guide_v every_o one_o of_o they_o to_o their_o end_n in_o such_o manner_n as_o be_v most_o congruous_a and_o agreeable_a to_o their_o several_a nature_n and_o man_n in_o particular_a free_o according_a to_o that_o liberty_n of_o his_o will_n which_o be_v natrnall_a to_o he_o from_o whence_o it_o be_v also_o that_o among_o man_n some_o be_v good_a and_o some_o be_v evil_a the_o good_a be_v they_o who_o life_n be_v agreeable_a to_o reason_n conform_v themselves_o to_o such_o illumination_n and_o inspiration_n as_o they_o have_v from_o god_n in_o all_o thing_n study_v and_o endeavour_v to_o please_v he_o the_o evil_a be_v those_o who_o follow_v not_o reason_n nor_o observe_v any_o rectitude_n or_o regularity_n of_o life_n if_o therefore_o the_o divine_a majesty_n have_v providence_n over_o humane_a affair_n and_o be_v just_a as_o he_o be_v he_o must_v certain_o have_v determine_v with_o himself_o both_o to_o reward_v the_o good_a and_o to_o punish_v such_o as_o be_v evil_a but_o this_o we_o see_v not_o do_v at_o least_o not_o exact_o not_o particular_o in_o this_o life_n therefore_o we_o must_v confess_v some_o other_o life_n to_o come_v wherein_o the_o reward_n of_o the_o just_a and_o punishment_n of_o the_o wicked_a shall_v be_v more_o eminent_o see_v which_o if_o it_o be_v so_o how_o much_o do_v it_o concern_v we_o to_o please_v god_n by_o a_o good_a life_n and_o see_v as_o we_o have_v elsewhere_o show_v that_o there_o can_v be_v no_o better_a life_n than_o the_o christian_a life_n be_v it_o be_v to_o no_o purpose_n for_o we_o to_o seek_v any_o where_o else_o how_o to_o live_v or_o how_o to_o please_v god_n for_o a_o life_n so_o lead_v can_v be_v without_o its_o due_a reward_n can_v be_v frustrate_v of_o that_o happiness_n which_o be_v promise_v to_o it_o if_o it_o can_v there_o be_v no_o life_n sure_a of_o happiness_n for_o the_o life_n of_o christian_n in_o many_o respect_n show_v that_o god_n have_v peculiar_a providence_n over_o they_o and_o therefore_o if_o their_o faith_n be_v not_o true_a neither_o can_v their_o life_n so_o much_o be_v govern_v by_o it_o nor_o will_v god_n suffer_v they_o long_o in_o that_o error_n who_o goodness_n it_o be_v to_o illuminate_v those_o which_o be_v good_a and_o right_a of_o heart_n and_o to_o harden_v and_o leave_v in_o blindness_n only_o those_o which_o be_v evil_a if_o therefore_o these_o thing_n be_v so_o let_v we_o believe_v in_o christ_n and_o let_v we_o live_v christianly_o for_o so_o do_v as_o be_v manifest_a by_o what_o have_v be_v say_v we_o can_v perish_v but_o must_v be_v happy_a in_o this_o world_n and_o in_o the_o next_o after_o a_o man_n have_v by_o this_o first_o serious_o consider_v what_o that_o thing_n be_v wherein_o christian_a life_n do_v as_o it_o be_v essential_o consist_v which_o be_v the_o grace_n of_o god_n i_o mean_v that_o grace_n which_o as_o we_o touch_v before_o do_v justify_v &_o make_v a_o man_n good_a in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n for_o we_o observe_v some_o man_n as_o soon_o as_o they_o begin_v to_o have_v a_o desire_n of_o live_v christianly_o they_o present_o apply_v themselves_o to_o the_o ceremony_n of_o religion_n and_o perform_v they_o exterior_o they_o imagine_v all_o on_o the_o sudden_a that_o they_o be_v become_v exceed_o good_a christian_n with_o which_o vanity_n many_o deceive_v themselves_o pretend_v to_o be_v christian_n but_o false_o be_v indeed_o a_o foolish_a lukewarm_a yet_o very_o arrogant_a sort_n of_o people_n man_n indeed_o look_v only_o on_o the_o outside_n praise_v what_o they_o see_v but_o god_n behold_v the_o heart_n and_o say_v to_o these_o man_n as_o our_o saviour_n say_v to_o the_o pharisee_n you_o be_v they_o who_o justify_v yourselves_o before_o man_n but_o god_n know_v your_o heart_n for_o many_o time_n that_o which_o be_v of_o high_a esteem_n with_o man_n be_v abomination_n before_o god_n he_o therefore_o that_o desire_v indeed_o to_o live_v christianly_o let_v he_o endeavour_v with_o the_o utmost_a of_o his_o power_n to_o obtain_v the_o grace_n of_o god_n not_o rest_v society_n then_o which_o degree_n and_o step_n towards_o heaven_n nothing_o can_v be_v find_v more_o firm_a and_o stable_a very_o such_o be_v the_o force_n and_o efficacy_n of_o this_o reason_n that_o i_o can_v resist_v it_o for_o how_o can_v i_o say_v that_o nothing_o ought_v to_o be_v believe_v unless_o it_o be_v know_v beside_o all_o friendship_n be_v take_v away_o unless_o something_o may_v understanding_n belief_n and_o opinion_n we_o have_v show_v already_o how_o without_o offence_n we_o may_v follow_v those_o that_o command_v we_o to_o believe_v it_o remain_v that_o we_o consider_v for_o what_o cause_n they_o be_v not_o to_o be_v follow_v that_o promise_n to_o conduct_v and_o lead_v we_o by_o reason_n some_o be_v of_o opinion_n that_o they_o can_v hearken_v and_o give_v ear_n to_o these_o promiser_n of_o reason_n not_o only_o without_o any_o blame_n or_o dispraise_v but_o also_o with_o some_o commendation_n and_o praise_n but_o it_o be_v not_o so_o for_o there_o be_v two_o sort_n of_o person_n that_o deserve_v praise_n in_o point_n of_o religion_n the_o one_o which_o have_v already_o find_v out_o the_o true_a religion_n which_o we_o ought_v to_o judge_v most_o happy_a and_o bless_a the_o other_o which_o with_o the_o great_a care_n and_o after_o the_o right_a manner_n do_v seek_v after_o it_o the_o first_o sort_n be_v now_o in_o possession_n of_o it_o the_o second_o perceive_v their_o own_o ignorance_n but_o do_v not_o so_o seek_v that_o they_o may_v find_v the_o three_o be_v of_o those_o that_o neither_o think_v they_o know_v nor_o have_v any_o will_n or_o desire_v to_o seek_v there_o be_v also_o three_o thing_n in_o the_o mind_n of_o man_n near_o as_o it_o be_v the_o one_o unto_o the_o other_o most_o worthy_a to_o be_v distinguish_v to_o understand_v to_o believe_v and_o to_o think_v of_o which_o if_o they_o be_v consider_v by_o themselves_o the_o first_o be_v always_o without_o offence_n the_o second_o sometime_o faulty_a the_o three_o never_o without_o a_o fault_n and_o this_o we_o ought_v to_o reserve_v to_o the_o same_o beatitude_n and_o felicity_n for_o in_o this_o life_n how_o much_o soever_o a_o man_n know_v his_o knowledge_n do_v not_o as_o yet_o make_v he_o most_o bless_a for_o that_o there_o be_v incomparable_o more_o thing_n whereof_o he_o be_v ignorant_a for_o to_o understand_v great_a and_o worthy_a and_o divine_a thing_n it_o be_v a_o most_o bless_a thing_n but_o it_o be_v not_o hurt_v full_a to_o understand_v superfluous_a thing_n but_o perhaps_o it_o be_v prejudicial_a to_o learn_v they_o when_o as_o they_o take_v up_o the_o time_n of_o necessary_a thing_n also_o it_o be_v not_o a_o miserable_a thing_n to_o understand_v hurtful_a thing_n but_o to_o do_v or_o suffer_v they_o for_o if_o any_o one_o understand_v how_o his_o enemy_n may_v be_v slay_v without_o endanger_v himself_o he_o become_v not_o guilty_a by_o understand_v it_o if_o he_o desire_v it_o not_o yea_o if_o he_o be_v free_a from_o such_o a_o desire_n who_o be_v more_o innocent_a and_o guiltless_a than_o he_o in_o believe_v a_o man_n be_v then_o to_o blame_v when_o either_o he_o believe_v some_o unworthy_a thing_n of_o god_n or_o give_v too_o facile_a and_o easy_a credit_n unto_o the_o thing_n report_v of_o man_n but_o in_o other_o thing_n if_o a_o man_n believe_v any_o thing_n he_o commit_v no_o fault_n by_o believe_v though_o he_o but_o have_v its_o foulness_n and_o deformity_n wherefore_o that_o we_o understand_v we_o attribute_v it_o to_o reason_n that_o we_o believe_v to_o authority_n and_o that_o we_o be_v opinative_a to_o error_n and_o mistake_n but_o every_o one_o that_o understand_v do_v also_o believe_v and_o so_o do_v every_o one_o that_o be_v opinative_a but_o not_o every_o one_o that_o believe_v understand_v those_o that_o be_v happy_a do_v believe_v truth_n itself_o and_o that_o the_o second_o kind_n which_o be_v those_o that_o be_v desirous_a and_o lover_n of_o truth_n do_v believe_v authority_n in_o both_o which_o kind_n the_o believer_n deserve_v praise_n but_o in_o the_o first_o of_o the_o vicious_a kind_n that_o be_v of_o those_o that_o think_v they_o know_v that_o which_o they_o know_v not_o there_o be_v indeed_o a_o faulty_a credulity_n the_o other_o two_o disallow_v kind_n that_o be_v both_o those_o that_o seek_v after_o truth_n with_o a_o despair_n of_o find_v it_o out_o and_o they_o that_o seek_v not_o after_o it_o do_v believe_v nothing_o and_o this_o be_v only_o in_o thing_n belong_v to_o some_o doctrine_n or_o discipline_n for_o how_o a_o man_n can_v believe_v nothing_o in_o the_o other_o action_n of_o his_o life_n i_o understand_v not_o albeit_o even_o among_o those_o that_o affirm_v that_o in_o their_o action_n they_o follow_v probable_a opinion_n some_o there_o be_v that_o will_v seem_v rather_o not_o able_a to_o know_v any_o thing_n then_o to_o believe_v nothing_o for_o who_o do_v not_o believe_v that_o which_o he_o do_v approve_v or_o how_o be_v that_o which_o they_o follow_v profitable_a if_o it_o be_v not_o approve_v wherefore_o there_o may_v be_v two_o kind_n of_o those_o that_o oppose_v the_o truth_n the_o one_o that_o oppose_v knowledge_n only_o and_o not_o faith_n the_o other_o that_o condemn_v both_o the_o one_o and_o the_o other_o but_o whither_o any_o can_v be_v find_v that_o use_n such_o proceed_n in_o humane_a affair_n i_o be_o whole_o ignorant_a these_o thing_n be_v speak_v that_o we_o may_v understand_v that_o believe_v the_o

rather_o to_o be_v as_o it_o be_v comfort_n of_o the_o live_n than_o any_o help_n for_o the_o dead_a for_o certain_o if_o a_o stately_a burial_n can_v of_o itself_o any_o thing_n advantage_n a_o wicked_a man_n to_o be_v poor_o bury_v or_o not_o bury_v at_o all_o will_v be_v some_o prejudice_n to_o a_o good_a which_o we_o know_v to_o be_v false_a for_o doubtless_o that_o rich_a glutton_n in_o the_o gospel_n 16._o luc._n 16._o who_o be_v clothe_v in_o purple_a and_o fare_v so_o delicious_o every_o day_n when_o he_o die_v have_v a_o very_a sumptuous_a funeral_n make_v he_o by_o his_o kindred_n and_o servant_n but_o yet_o far_o more_o glorious_a in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n be_v that_o give_v unto_o the_o poor_a beggar_n by_o the_o hand_n of_o angel_n who_o carry_v he_o out_o not_o unto_o any_o tomb_n of_o marble_n but_o to_o the_o place_n where_o he_o desire_v to_o be_v into_o the_o bosom_n of_o abraham_n it_o be_v true_a those_o against_o who_o we_o have_v undertake_v to_o defend_v the_o city_n of_o god_n laugh_v at_o these_o thing_n nevertheless_o even_o their_o own_o philosopher_n oftentimes_o have_v seem_v to_o make_v as_o little_a account_n of_o the_o rite_n of_o sepulture_n and_o whole_a army_n of_o man_n when_o they_o come_v into_o the_o field_n with_o resolution_n to_o die_v for_o their_o temporal_a country_n of_o all_o thing_n mind_v least_o where_o their_o body_n fall_v or_o what_o beast_n shall_v devour_v they_o yea_o the_o poet_n themselves_o not_o without_o applause_n have_v be_v hear_v to_o say_v heaven_n cover_v he_o who_o have_v no_o cofin_n lucan_n lucan_n how_o much_o less_o ought_v they_o then_o to_o insult_v over_o christians_n concern_v their_o body_n lie_v unbury_v to_o who_o they_o can_v but_o know_v restauration_n of_o ornament_n or_o any_o extrinsecall_a help_n but_o to_o the_o very_a substance_n of_o our_o nature_n whence_o it_o be_v also_o that_o the_o funeral_n of_o just_a man_n in_o old_a time_n be_v perform_v with_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o piety_n &_o
care_n their_o exequy_n solemn_o celebrate_v and_o the_o place_n of_o their_o burial_n with_o much_o diligence_n provide_v yea_o themselves_o in_o their_o life_n time_n 23.47.49.50_o gen._n 23.47.49.50_o will_v frequent_o give_v command_n concern_v the_o bury_n and_o remove_v of_o their_o body_n after_o their_o death_n as_o there_o be_v cause_n 2.12_o tob._n 2.12_o and_o tobias_n be_v commend_v by_o no_o less_o testimony_n then_o of_o a_o angel_n to_o have_v merit_v with_o god_n for_o that_o he_o be_v diligent_a to_o bury_v the_o dead_a yea_o our_o lord_n himself_o although_o he_o great_a reward_n there_o may_v be_v for_o such_o alm_n as_o we_o give_v unto_o live_a people_n when_o even_o that_o which_o be_v bestow_v upon_o the_o dead_a and_o liveless_a member_n be_v not_o lose_v with_o god_n there_o be_v indeed_o some_o other_o particular_n which_o the_o holy_a patriarch_n who_o speak_v they_o will_v have_v to_o be_v understand_v concern_v the_o burial_n and_o translate_n of_o their_o body_n after_o death_n as_o speak_v by_o a_o prophetical_a spirit_n but_o this_o be_v no_o place_n to_o treat_v of_o they_o see_v that_o which_o we_o have_v deliver_v apparel_n etc._n etc._n yet_o do_v never_o when_o they_o be_v want_v violate_v or_o overthrow_v the_o virtue_n of_o patience_n in_o good_a people_n nor_o extirpate_v piety_n quite_o out_o of_o the_o mind_n but_o rather_o exercise_v and_o revive_v it_o much_o less_o doubtless_o can_v those_o thing_n which_o be_v usual_o expend_v in_o funeral_n &_o exequy_n upon_o decease_a person_n when_o they_o happen_v to_o be_v want_v make_v those_o person_n miserable_a who_o be_v already_o settle_v and_o at_o rest_n in_o those_o secret_a tabernacle_n of_o the_o just_a and_o therefore_o when_o it_o so_o fall_v out_o in_o the_o devastation_n of_o that_o great_a city_n and_o of_o the_o adjacent_a town_n that_o the_o body_n of_o good_a christian_n have_v not_o burial_n we_o may_v not_o present_o charge_v either_o the_o live_n with_o any_o crime_n thereabouts_o who_o can_v not_o help_v it_o nor_o yet_o the_o dead_a with_o any_o great_a misfortune_n who_o be_v as_o little_a sensible_a of_o it_o this_o be_v my_o opinion_n concern_v the_o matter_n of_o sepulture_n in_o general_a which_o i_o have_v therefore_o translate_v into_o this_o book_n out_o of_o that_o other_o of_o the_o city_n of_o god_n in_o regard_n it_o be_v something_o more_o easy_a for_o i_o to_o repeat_v it_o in_o this_o then_o to_o deliver_v it_o in_o a_o new_a manner_n chap._n four_o now_o if_o this_o be_v so_o sure_o also_o the_o provision_n of_o place_n for_o the_o burial_n of_o body_n at_o the_o monument_n of_o saint_n must_v have_v something_o in_o it_o it_o must_v be_v at_o least_o a_o argument_n of_o some_o good_a humane_a affection_n towards_o our_o friend_n who_o funeral_n we_o celebrate_v and_o if_o it_o be_v some_o kind_n of_o religion_n to_o bury_v they_o at_o all_o certain_o to_o have_v care_n in_o what_o place_n we_o bury_v they_o can_v but_o be_v of_o like_a merit_n but_o yet_o when_o such_o comfort_n as_o these_o be_v procure_v by_o the_o live_n by_o which_o indeed_o their_o pious_a affection_n towards_o their_o decease_a friend_n be_v sufficient_o declare_v to_o survive_v yet_o i_o say_v i_o perceive_v not_o for_o my_o part_n any_o advantage_n come_v thereby_o unto_o the_o dead_a unless_o it_o be_v in_o this_o only_a respect_n namely_o that_o when_o man_n remember_v where_o the_o body_n of_o their_o decease_a friend_n be_v place_v they_o may_v in_o their_o prayer_n recommend_v they_o unto_o god_n more_o effectual_o by_o the_o intercession_n of_o those_o saint_n unto_o who_o patronage_n they_o may_v seem_v by_o the_o place_n of_o their_o burial_n desire_a patronage_n of_o saint_n profitable_a when_o desire_a to_o be_v receive_v which_o yet_o also_o they_o may_v if_o they_o please_v very_o well_o do_v suppose_v they_o be_v not_o inter_v in_o such_o place_n neither_o be_v those_o more_o eminent_a sepulcher_n of_o the_o dead_a call_v memory_n or_o monument_n for_o any_o other_o reason_n then_o because_o they_o do_v as_o it_o be_v renew_v or_o preserve_v the_o remembrance_n of_o such_o person_n as_o be_v by_o death_n withdraw_v from_o the_o common_a conversation_n of_o man_n and_o so_o hinder_v that_o they_o perish_v not_o altogether_o as_o much_o in_o the_o mind_n of_o their_o friend_n as_o they_o seem_v lose_v to_o their_o eye_n for_o the_o very_a name_n of_o memory_n import_v this_o clear_o and_o a_o monument_n be_v so_o call_v because_o it_o admonish_v or_o as_o it_o be_v prompt_v the_o mind_n to_o something_o which_o be_v fit_a to_o be_v think_v on_o for_o which_o reason_n also_o the_o same_o thing_n which_o we_o call_v a_o memory_n or_o monument_n the_o greek_n call_v 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d from_o 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d which_o in_o their_o language_n be_v as_o much_o as_o remembrance_n with_o we_o whensoever_o therefore_o the_o mind_n of_o a_o man_n remember_v where_o the_o body_n of_o some_o dear_a friend_n be_v bury_v if_o the_o place_n which_o come_v to_o mind_n be_v also_o venerable_a and_o renown_v for_o the_o name_n of_o some_o martyr_n instant_o without_o more_o ado_n the_o good_a affection_n of_o he_o that_o remember_v this_o tyr_n soul_n recommen_v unto_o the_o mar._n tyr_n in_o his_o prayer_n recommend_v the_o soul_n it_o love_v unto_o the_o same_o martyr_n which_o affection_n yet_o when_o it_o be_v exhibit_v by_o faithful_a and_o dear_a friend_n unto_o people_n depart_v they_o themselves_o before_o their_o departure_n merit_v that_o it_o shall_v be_v available_a to_o they_o and_o therefore_o where_o necessity_n suffer_v not_o either_o that_o body_n be_v bury_v at_o all_o or_o not_o in_o such_o place_n as_o these_o depart_v prayer_n for_o the_o soul_n depart_v yet_o prayer_n for_o the_o soul_n depart_v be_v never_o pretermit_v which_o the_o church_n of_o god_n as_o it_o be_v engage_v herself_o to_o perform_v at_o least_o under_o a_o general_a commemoration_n without_o particular_a mention_n of_o name_n in_o behalf_n of_o all_o those_o who_o be_v depart_v in_o the_o christian_n catholic_n communion_n to_o the_o intent_n that_o by_o the_o care_n of_o one_o pious_a &_o common_a mother_n unto_o all_o supply_n may_v be_v make_v of_o such_o good_a office_n wherein_o possible_o our_o friend_n kindred_n child_n or_o parent_n may_v be_v defective_a towards_o we_o so_o that_o indeed_o in_o case_n these_o supplication_n we_o speak_v of_o which_o be_v usual_o do_v in_o right_a faith_n and_o piety_n for_o the_o dead_a shall_v be_v want_v or_o not_o make_v at_o all_o i_o for_o my_o part_n suppose_v it_o will_v not_o much_o profit_n a_o man_n soul_n to_o have_v his_o body_n bury_v in_o a_o holy_a place_n chap._n v._n wherefore_o to_o return_v to_o our_o purpose_n when_o as_o this_o faithful_a mother_n desire_v to_o have_v the_o body_n of_o her_o faithful_a child_n put_v in_o the_o church_n of_o a_o martyr_n this_o desire_n of_o she_o be_v a_o kind_n of_o prayer_n for_o as_o much_o as_o she_o believe_v his_o soul_n may_v receive_v help_n by_o the_o merit_n of_o the_o martyr_n strong_o soul_n receive_v help_n by_o the_o merit_n of_o the_o martyr_n s._n aug._n assure_v we_o that_o prayer_n for_o the_o dead_a be_v very_o profitable_a though_o he_o be_v not_o certain_a whither_o the_o burial_n in_o any_o particular_a place_n be_v so_o available_a yet_o he_o much_o incline_v to_o that_o also_o and_o prove_v it_o very_o strong_o and_o this_o be_v that_o which_o profit_v if_o any_o thing_n do_v profit_n at_o all_o so_o when_o the_o mother_n afterward_o remember_v the_o same_o sepulchre_n
