people_n in_o city_n and_o country_n everywhere_o 3._o to_o our_o army_n which_o maintain_v our_o cause_n and_o the_o cause_n of_o religion_n and_o our_o law_n and_o liberty_n and_o all_o that_o be_v god_n make_v it_o evident_a that_o it_o be_v otherwise_o consideration_n and_o that_o the_o sin_n of_o those_o that_o be_v god_n people_n by_o more_o special_a profession_n and_o sometime_o even_o of_o his_o most_o faithful_a servant_n as_o david_n number_v the_o people_n and_o hezekiah_n pride_n and_o vainglory_n undeniable_o have_v especial_a influence_n to_o bring_v national_a judgement_n 2._o and_o we_o have_v very_o great_a cause_n to_o judge_v so_o at_o this_o time_n and_o to_o be_v humble_v in_o a_o special_a manner_n in_o that_o regard_n for_o if_o we_o consider_v that_o the_o stroke_n of_o god_n displeasure_n light_v not_o only_o upon_o our_o enemy_n the_o enemy_n of_o god_n and_o his_o true_a religion_n nor_o only_o upon_o the_o profane_a sort_n of_o the_o people_n of_o the_o land_n but_o general_o upon_o all_o and_o in_o some_o respect_n more_o heavy_o upon_o the_o well-affected_a party_n of_o the_o kingdom_n b._n we_o must_v needs_o acknowledge_v unless_o we_o will_v disparage_v at_o once_o both_o god_n mercy_n and_o his_o justice_n too_o that_o not_o only_o the_o enemy_n and_o the_o profane_a sort_n have_v provoke_v he_o with_o their_o invention_n but_o even_o those_o that_o have_v give_v up_o their_o name_n to_o he_o in_o a_o peculiar_a manner_n have_v give_v he_o just_a occasion_n to_o take_v vengeance_n on_o their_o invention_n too_o and_o to_o punish_v all_o sort_n one_o with_o another_o and_o one_o by_o another_o it_o can_v not_o else_o be_v that_o god_n shall_v so_o long_o and_o so_o much_o appear_v to_o be_v angry_a with_o his_o people_n that_o pray_v to_o overlook_v so_o much_o so_o many_o solemn_a fast_n and_o seek_n of_o he_o to_o regard_v no_o more_o such_o beginning_n of_o reformation_n as_o be_v among_o we_o none_o therefore_o can_v be_v excuse_v of_o any_o of_o these_o sort_n and_o they_o that_o be_v or_o seem_v to_o be_v best_a be_v most_o hopeful_a to_o take_v this_o to_o heart_n and_o to_o help_v consequent_o to_o reform_v themselves_o and_o other_o too_o by_o be_v thus_o put_v in_o mind_n of_o the_o evil_n that_o even_o the_o religious_a party_n be_v guilty_a of_o and_o here_o let_v i_o begin_v with_o this_o question_n first_o that_o whereas_o my_o reverend_a brother_n that_o speak_v in_o the_o morning_n put_v it_o to_o our_o conscience_n that_o we_o shall_v not_o rest_v in_o the_o enquiry_n whether_o and_o observation_n and_o of_o divers_a very_o judicious_a and_o observant_a man_n who_o complain_v much_o and_o often_o of_o it_o that_o a_o number_n of_o those_o that_o profess_v god_n name_n very_o forward_o in_o some_o thing_n be_v yet_o grow_v worse_o rather_o thâ—n_v better_a in_o divers_a other_o pride_n 1._o that_o apparel_n those_o fashion_n and_o those_o garb_n of_o behaviour_n that_o will_v have_v be_v account_v abomination_n 7._o or_o 10._o year_n ago_o be_v now_o take_v up_o without_o scruple_n by_o those_o that_o will_v go_v for_o religious_a people_n and_o if_o pride_n do_v testify_v to_o man_n and_o woman_n
we_o not_o see_v the_o like_a in_o the_o other_o sacrament_n because_o very_o many_o even_o the_o most_o have_v have_v little_a regard_n to_o prepare_v themselves_o for_o the_o lord_n supper_n and_o have_v come_v many_o a_o time_n undue_o abuse_v unworthy_o without_o examination_n of_o themselves_o and_o now_o be_v it_o not_o come_v to_o that_o pass_n neglect_v that_o great_a number_n fall_v off_o from_o it_o altogether_o and_o question_n whether_o they_o may_v come_v with_o such_o and_o such_o person_n as_o they_o like_v not_o and_o if_o any_o thing_n be_v there_o do_v which_o they_o like_v not_o of_o and_o so_o because_o they_o never_o get_v any_o good_a by_o come_v as_o some_o have_v not_o stick_v to_o confess_v they_o make_v amends_o by_o stay_v away_o altogether_o and_o so_o be_v want_v still_o to_o the_o honour_n of_o christ_n and_o the_o good_a of_o their_o own_o soul_n to_o the_o augmentation_n of_o which_o that_o sacrament_n be_v ordain_v and_o to_o which_o it_o be_v effectual_a in_o all_o those_o that_o come_v with_o faithful_a and_o prepare_a heart_n to_o it_o what_o ever_o become_v of_o other_o man_n 2._o task_n as_o we_o find_v moses_n unwilling_a to_o venture_v himself_o upon_o the_o wrath_n of_o pharaoh_n and_o to_o undertake_v a_o troublesome_a and_o difficult_a work_n so_o may_v we_o not_o find_v among_o we_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o guilt_n in_o out_o of_o his_o life_n so_o be_v not_o these_o the_o usual_a complaint_n of_o many_o of_o we_o in_o our_o several_a business_n though_o go_v about_o at_o the_o undoubted_a command_n of_o god_n do_v we_o not_o often_o wish_v that_o we_o have_v never_o undertake_v they_o how_o many_o speak_v so_o of_o this_o most_o necessary_a defence_n which_o their_o own_o conscience_n still_o tell_v they_o be_v the_o command_n of_o god_n and_o frequent_o cry_v that_o thing_n grow_v every_o day_n worse_o and_o worse_o and_o that_o we_o be_v not_o able_a to_o abide_v it_o if_o it_o continue_v thus_o with_o we_o but_o a_o while_n long_o and_o we_o will_v glad_o run_v any_o whether_o if_o we_o know_v whether_o and_o sometime_o wish_v we_o can_v run_v out_o of_o the_o world_n so_o impatient_a be_v we_o of_o the_o frowardness_n of_o the_o generation_n with_o which_o god_n will_v have_v we_o to_o wrestle_v even_o though_o his_o word_n and_o all_o experience_n proclaim_v to_o we_o that_o every_o work_n and_o every_o generation_n have_v its_o difficulty_n and_o that_o reproach_n have_v ever_o attend_v the_o most_o noble_a erterprise_n and_o the_o special_a nature_n of_o those_o we_o be_v set_v about_o do_v oftentimes_o forewarn_v of_o special_a difficulty_n to_o be_v vndergonâ—_z as_o certain_o as_o foul_a way_n in_o the_o depth_n of_o winter_n but_o when_o these_o come_v upon_o we_o do_v we_o not_o very_o often_o express_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o discontent_n and_o impatience_n in_o our_o family_n and_o to_o other_o and_o scarce_o forbear_v repine_v at_o god_n own_o deal_n with_o we_o or_o know_v how_o to_o make_v a_o compose_a prayer_n to_o god_n so_o disquiet_v be_v our_o mind_n with_o disturbance_n 4._o action_n again_o as_o we_o find_v moses_n distrust_v god_n the_o rather_o because_o the_o perverseness_n of_o the_o people_n provoke_v his_o spirit_n so_o that_o he_o discover_v passion_n and_o some_o unbelief_n both_o together_o even_o before_o the_o people_n which_o be_v manifest_a unbelief_n and_o distrust_n and_o upon_o this_o venture_n upon_o action_n which_o god_n have_v not_o allow_v we_o and_o if_o we_o find_v these_o thing_n in_o ourselves_o as_o very_o few_o be_v able_a to_o plead_v not_o guilty_a we_o have_v sure_o great_a cause_n to_o humble_v ourselves_o for_o they_o this_o day_n and_o hereafter_o and_o the_o rather_o because_o of_o the_o vengeance_n some_o vengeance_n take_v on_o those_o fail_n b._n yet_o seldom_o do_v any_o of_o his_o servant_n break_v out_o into_o fault_n before_o the_o eye_n of_o bystander_n but_o some_o kind_n of_o those_o that_o send_v they_o forth_o there_o they_o ever_o prevail_v and_o never_o be_v they_o foil_v but_o you_o shall_v readâ—_z either_o before_o hand_n or_o short_o after_o the_o mention_n of_o the_o defeat_n the_o sin_n that_o so_o provoke_v god_n to_o take_v vengeance_n therefore_o as_o we_o fear_v any_o overthrow_n and_o pray_v against_o it_o we_o must_v acknowledge_v both_o our_o own_o sin_n and_o they_o who_o be_v engage_v to_o fight_v for_o we_o and_o if_o we_o consider_v the_o matter_n right_o it_o be_v a_o fearful_a thing_n that_o among_o those_o who_o profess_v to_o maintain_v own_o honour_n and_o advantage_n that_o they_o that_o fight_v for_o the_o liberty_n of_o the_o nation_n shall_v commit_v so_o many_o outrage_n and_o practice_v such_o rapine_n and_o spoil_n as_o it_o be_v most_o certain_a many_o of_o they_o do_v and_o it_o be_v say_v sin_n there_o be_v little_a difference_n between_o their_o plunder_n and_o the_o enemy_n who_o all_o cry_n out_o upon_o as_o very_o barbarous_a that_o among_o those_o who_o pretend_v to_o have_v take_v arm_n to_o defend_v religion_n and_o the_o gospel_n there_o shall_v be_v a_o loud_a noise_n of_o their_o swear_n and_o drunkenness_n and_o profaneness_n of_o whoredom_n and_o of_o do_v injury_n to_o our_o own_o friend_n and_o special_o to_o those_o that_o be_v great_a friend_n and_o best_a affect_a to_o the_o gospel_n and_o religion_n as_o if_o they_o be_v gage_v to_o fight_v against_o it_o and_o to_o eat_v they_o up_o if_o these_o thing_n be_v so_o as_o there_o be_v nothing_o more_o certain_a than_o that_o they_o be_v too_o too_o common_a in_o our_o army_n if_o our_o army_n go_v forth_o and_o manage_v the_o war_n as_o there_o be_v too_o evident_a sign_n of_o it_o with_o very_a much_o carnal_a confidence_n in_o themselves_o and_o their_o strength_n and_o worldly_a advantage_n the_o common_a fault_n of_o we_o all_o in_o a_o great_a measure_n and_o if_o there_o be_v among_o they_o man_n that_o desire_v and_o design_n to_o prolong_v our_o trouble_n and_o lengthen_v out_o the_o war_n that_o they_o may_v make_v the_o better_a purchase_n of_o their_o employment_n and_o charge_n of_o which_o there_o be_v but_o too_o much_o cause_n of_o suspicion_n we_o can_v just_o wonder_v that_o our_o army_n prosper_v no_o better_o we_o may_v rather_o wonder_v god_n have_v take_v no_o more_o vengeance_n hitherto_o upon_o their_o sin_n and_o we_o together_o and_o we_o can_v expect_v that_o god_n shall_v go_v forth_o with_o they_o any_o more_o except_o we_o and_o they_o be_v true_o and_o sad_o humble_v for_o their_o sin_n and_o we_o and_o on_o all_o hand_n there_o be_v a_o endeavour_n of_o amendment_n of_o which_o more_o by_o and_o by_o mean_a time_n sin_n i_o have_v a_o word_n to_o add_v of_o the_o three_o sort_n of_o sin_n which_o require_v our_o present_a humiliation_n namely_o our_o own_o be_v guilty_a of_o other_o siâ—s_n of_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o nation_n of_o which_o whatsoever_o we_o find_v lie_v upon_o we_o ought_v very_o much_o to_o press_v we_o down_o and_o increase_v our_o humiliation_n before_o god_n and_o our_o fear_n of_o his_o vengeance_n upon_o our_o untowardness_n and_o here_o true_o i_o doubt_v we_o must_v all_o lay_v our_o hand_n upon_o our_o heart_n and_o acknowledge_v a_o great_a deal_n more_o guilt_n than_o we_o use_v to_o take_v notice_n of_o even_o therefore_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o guilt_n in_o ourselves_o both_o because_o we_o use_v to_o take_v so_o little_a notice_n of_o much_o of_o that_o national_a guilt_n that_o oppress_v we_o as_o also_o because_o we_o be_v so_o little_o affect_v with_o godly_a sorrow_n for_o those_o evil_n which_o we_o seem_v to_o take_v some_o notice_n of_o much_o i_o know_v that_o by_o fit_n we_o all_o abound_v in_o complaint_n of_o the_o general_a depravation_n and_o overspreading_a corruption_n of_o all_o sort_n and_o rank_n among_o we_o and_o that_o there_o be_v much_o hear_n and_o little_a practise_v much_o outward_a humiliation_n and_o little_a reformation_n that_o one_o know_v not_o who_o to_o employ_v and_o who_o to_o trust_v that_o all_o seek_v their_o own_o and_o not_o the_o thing_n of_o jesus_n christ_n that_o there_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o pretence_n of_o conscience_n and_o plead_v for_o reformation_n and_o very_o little_a sign_n of_o conscience_n or_o of_o real_a intention_n or_o desire_n of_o any_o reformation_n more_o than_o of_o thâ—se_o thing_n that_o have_v be_v or_o be_v like_a to_o be_v troublesome_a to_o themselves_o these_o and_o many_o such_o like_a complaint_n with_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o more_o bitterness_n and_o many_o sharp_a accent_n worse_a to_o
so_o much_o as_o any_o show_n by_o his_o discourse_n that_o his_o thought_n be_v settle_v towards_o the_o humble_n of_o himself_o when_o woman_n dare_v come_v hither_o with_o their_o bare_a breast_n and_o spot_a face_n and_o garish_a apparel_n be_v not_o this_o as_o it_o be_v to_o outface_v god_n and_o tell_v he_o they_o mean_v nothing_o less_o than_o to_o be_v humble_v in_o heart_n before_o he_o while_o people_n sit_v here_o before_o the_o public_a service_n begin_v and_o in_o the_o space_n between_o show_v pleasantness_n in_o their_o look_n and_o their_o word_n savour_v of_o nothing_o but_o worldly_a matter_n and_o as_o soon_o as_o they_o be_v go_v hence_o what_o ever_o they_o have_v hear_v or_o make_v show_n of_o in_o public_a their_o language_n at_o home_n and_o all_o their_o behaviour_n even_o the_o same_o night_n and_o much_o more_o next_o morning_n have_v no_o tincture_n of_o any_o such_o thing_n as_o affliction_n of_o spirit_n what_o can_v we_o believe_v but_o that_o they_o do_v not_o so_o much_o as_o that_o which_o the_o prophet_n mention_v and_o reject_v isa._n 58._o afflict_v themselves_o for_o a_o day_n and_o bow_v down_o their_o head_n like_o bulrush_n for_o with_o they_o it_o be_v but_o a_o few_o hour_n and_o not_o a_o whole_a day_n and_o when_o they_o be_v over_o than_o they_o be_v as_o jolly_a again_o and_o hold_v their_o head_n as_o high_a as_o they_o do_v before_o and_o all_o their_o pretend_a humiliation_n be_v go_v and_o forget_v and_o not_o a_o shadow_n of_o it_o remain_v belove_a if_o we_o do_v thus_o we_o may_v please_v ourselves_o with_o call_v this_o a_o day_n of_o fast_n and_o humiliation_n but_o i_o be_o sure_a there_o be_v little_a humiliation_n in_o that_o soul_n that_o behave_v itself_o after_o this_o manner_n there_o be_v a_o happy_a and_o pious_a exhortation_n to_o humiliation_n set_v forth_o some_o month_n ago_o by_o the_o authority_n of_o the_o parliament_n i_o can_v hearty_o wish_v it_o may_v be_v enjoin_v to_o be_v read_v everywhere_o every_o fastday_n in_o the_o beginning_n of_o the_o day_n and_o that_o to_o this_o be_v add_v a_o charge_n that_o one_o of_o the_o sermon_n at_o least_o in_o every_o congregatiâ—n_n may_v be_v express_o make_v to_o move_v to_o humiliation_n and_o repentance_n for_o i_o must_v needs_o profess_v that_o i_o much_o fear_v that_o the_o great_a part_n even_o in_o the_o great_a and_o best_a congregation_n can_v scarce_o instruct_v themselves_o sufficient_o in_o the_o business_n of_o such_o a_o day_n therefore_o profitable_a if_o when_o we_o come_v to_o humble_v ourselves_o there_o be_v not_o only_o solemn_a confession_n of_o sin_n by_o the_o minister_n but_o some_o earnest_n and_o vehement_a exhortation_n to_o mourn_v for_o the_o sin_n confess_v and_o to_o be_v confess_v this_o may_v perhaps_o fasten_v some_o better_a thought_n in_o the_o mind_n of_o most_o man_n than_o now_o i_o doubt_v do_v ever_o so_o much_o as_o comecrosse_a their_o mind_n for_o though_o we_o call_v the_o business_n of_o such_o a_o day_n prayer_n and_o fast_v yet_o i_o very_o believe_v the_o most_o of_o man_n do_v much_o more_o mind_n the_o sermon_n and_o exhortation_n than_o they_o do_v the_o prayer_n b._n and_o man_n very_a countenance_n declare_v it_o and_o their_o demeanour_n to_o any_o one_o that_o do_v but_o cast_v his_o eye_n upon_o they_o some_o be_v plain_o gaze_v up_o and_o down_o and_o other_o put_v themselves_o into_o such_o a_o posture_n as_o if_o they_o be_v not_o extraordinary_o zealous_a must_v needs_o dispose_v they_o much_o to_o fall_v asleep_a they_o can_v not_o do_v otherwise_o but_o if_o they_o be_v attentive_a at_o all_o they_o make_v some_o show_n of_o it_o during_o the_o sermon_n and_o therefore_o if_o some_o serious_a thought_n of_o humiliation_n be_v offer_v to_o they_o in_o the_o sermon_n each_o day_n it_o may_v put_v every_o one_o spirit_n into_o a_o much_o better_a frame_n than_o now_o usual_o they_o be_v in_o let_v i_o conceit_n be_v terrible_a enough_o all_o which_o require_v we_o to_o be_v great_o humble_v for_o our_o offence_n this_o day_n for_o to_o which_o purpose_n let_v i_o chief_o touch_v upon_o three_o thing_n 1._o some_o personal_a sin_n that_o we_o may_v be_v remember_v of_o 2._o some_o national_a sin_n 3._o how_o far_o any_o of_o we_o may_v be_v charge_v with_o be_v guilty_a of_o these_o national_a sin_n first_o general_n for_o our_o personal_a sin_n i_o will_v wish_v all_o but_o to_o remember_v general_o our_o covenant_n and_o inquire_v about_o breach_n of_o that_o and_o particular_o to_o see_v whether_o we_o be_v not_o guilty_a of_o such_o kind_n of_o sin_n as_o we_o have_v note_v before_o in_o any_o of_o the_o person_n who_o the_o text_n speak_v of_o when_o we_o enter_v into_o our_o solemn_a national_a covenant_n we_o even_o in_o it_o public_o profess_v that_o we_o have_v a_o serious_a apprehension_n of_o our_o own_o sin_n and_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o nation_n call_v for_o god_n wrath_n against_o we_o and_o there_o be_v mention_v make_v of_o some_o special_a sin_n as_o that_o we_o have_v not_o as_o we_o ought_v value_v the_o inestimable_a jewel_n of_o the_o gospel_n that_o we_o have_v not_o labour_v for_o the_o purity_n and_o power_n thereof_o that_o we_o have_v not_o endeavour_v to_o receive_v christ_n in_o our_o heart_n nor_o to_o walk_v worthy_a of_o he_o in_o our_o life_n and_o we_o there_o also_o undertake_v many_o thing_n which_o i_o be_o afraid_a we_o have_v much_o forget_v and_o i_o be_o persuade_v that_o there_o be_v many_o b._n that_o never_o so_o much_o as_o read_v it_o over_o once_o since_o they_o take_v it_o so_o little_a regard_n have_v they_o of_o it_o and_o that_o they_o can_v name_v so_o much_o as_o any_o one_o sin_n that_o they_o have_v those_o kind_n of_o sin_n text_n that_o the_o worthy_n in_o the_o text_n be_v find_v faulty_a in_o and_o ask_v every_o conscience_n whether_o it_o have_v not_o somewhat_o to_o charge_n upon_o itself_o in_o one_o or_o other_o of_o those_o error_n sacrament_n 1._o we_o find_v moses_n neglectful_a of_o the_o seal_n of_o the_o covenant_n for_o his_o child_n omit_v the_o circumcision_n of_o his_o son_n i_o know_v not_o why_o he_o do_v so_o unless_o it_o be_v to_o please_v his_o wife_n for_o he_o have_v a_o zipporah_n in_o his_o bosom_n a_o midianitish_a wife_n but_o however_o he_o be_v too_o blame_v in_o it_o in_o not_o dedicate_a his_o child_n to_o god_n not_o value_v the_o seal_n of_o his_o covenant_n as_o he_o shall_v have_v do_v abuse_v now_o be_v there_o not_o among_o we_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o guilt_n in_o this_o kind_n the_o little_a use_n that_o most_o have_v make_v or_o do_v make_v of_o their_o own_o be_v baptise_v and_o be_v make_v partaker_n themselves_o of_o that_o seal_n of_o god_n covenant_n in_o their_o childhood_n which_o succeed_v circumcision_n under_o the_o gospel_n and_o carry_v themselves_o never_o a_o whit_n the_o better_a towards_o god_n for_o his_o receive_v they_o as_o his_o so_o long_o ago_o in_o that_o sacrament_n be_v it_o not_o unhappy_o punish_v in_o more_o than_o a_o few_o neglect_v with_o their_o call_n in_o question_n whether_o child_n shall_v be_v so_o dedicate_v to_o god_n and_o partake_v of_o that_o seal_n of_o his_o covenant_n and_o so_o because_o they_o have_v themselves_o abuse_v god_n goodness_n to_o themselves_o they_o come_v to_o deny_v their_o own_o and_o other_o child_n to_o have_v any_o right_n to_o that_o pledge_n of_o his_o goodness_n and_o so_o make_v amends_o for_o one_o sin_n with_o another_o supper_n and_o do_v
face_n in_o former_a time_n it_o do_v much_o more_o now_o when_o so_o many_o solemn_a day_n of_o humiliation_n keep_v by_o they_o public_o and_o private_o have_v wrought_v no_o amendment_n but_o while_o many_o complain_v of_o their_o being_n poor_a every_o one_o may_v see_v they_o as_o proud_a as_o ever_o sabbath_n if_o not_o rather_o more_o 2._o those_o that_o some_o year_n ago_o make_v great_a conscience_n of_o the_o sabbath_n and_o of_o family-duty_n be_v now_o many_o of_o they_o come_v even_o to_o question_n whether_o the_o sabbath_n be_v at_o all_o to_o be_v observe_v or_o no_o many_o error_n practice_n and_o strange_a opinion_n be_v there_o to_o be_v find_v even_o among_o such_o as_o be_v all_o pretender_n to_o the_o way_n of_o truth_n beside_o many_o usurp_a ministerial_a office_n and_o exercise_v ministerial_a act_n without_o any_o call_v and_o not_o a_o few_o without_o so_o much_o as_o a_o show_n of_o any_o competent_a gift_n they_o 6._o be_v there_o not_o extreme_a censoriousness_n and_o a_o spirit_n of_o bitterness_n in_o very_a many_o seem_a good_a against_o all_o those_o that_o agree_v not_o with_o they_o in_o every_o one_o of_o their_o opinion_n even_o so_o far_o as_o to_o throw_v they_o off_o as_o no_o christian_n how_o much_o soever_o they_o evidence_n of_o virtue_n and_o piety_n in_o other_o respect_n certain_o this_o be_v not_o according_a to_o the_o word_n of_o christ_n nor_o be_v these_o behaviour_n become_v a_o people_n that_o desire_v to_o honour_n that_o royal_a name_n by_o which_o they_o be_v call_v and_o therefore_o these_o call_n for_o special_a humiliation_n at_o our_o hand_n in_o conclusion_n this_o i_o be_o force_v to_o say_v with_o the_o great_a grief_n of_o my_o soul_n that_o so_o far_o as_o i_o be_o able_a to_o judge_v by_o all_o that_o i_o see_v and_o hear_v where_o ever_o i_o come_v the_o religion_n and_o devotion_n of_o a_o great_a many_o even_o of_o those_o who_o former_o give_v better_a hope_n of_o their_o be_v sincere_a do_v now_o empty_a itself_o into_o formality_n solemn_a fast_n and_o speak_v for_o the_o public_a cause_n and_o withal_o be_v violent_a for_o their_o own_o opinion_n and_o interest_n and_o those_o that_o maintain_v they_o with_o they_o but_o withal_o this_o i_o must_v needs_o add_v that_o the_o more_o any_o of_o we_o be_v convince_v that_o this_o be_v true_a the_o more_o cause_n have_v we_o and_o all_o that_o true_o fear_v god_n to_o be_v humble_v before_o he_o for_o these_o general_a evil_n of_o the_o religious_a part_n of_o our_o nation_n and_o the_o more_o cause_n to_o be_v afraid_a that_o we_o be_v not_o so_o near_o a_o deliverance_n as_o we_o sometime_o will_v glad_o think_v but_o rather_o to_o be_v persuade_v that_o before_o god_n will_v deliver_v we_o he_o will_v put_v we_o into_o another_o frame_n and_o temper_n of_o spirit_n than_o we_o be_v now_o in_o that_o he_o will_v mar_v our_o pride_n and_o tame_v our_o wildness_n and_o curb_v we_o in_o our_o pursuit_n of_o self-respect_n quell_v our_o scandalous_a behaviour_n and_o as_o he_o promise_v more_o than_o once_o by_o his_o prophet_n give_v we_o one_o heart_n and_o one_o way_n all_o which_o as_o yet_o after_o all_o warning_n and_o show_n of_o humiliation_n and_o blow_n and_o favour_n we_o seem_v very_o far_o from_o and_o therefore_o still_o it_o be_v fit_a to_o call_v we_o to_o sad_a humiliation_n for_o these_o provocation_n in_o the_o first_o place_n the_o second_o consideration_n of_o national_a sin_n generality_n refer_v to_o the_o body_n of_o the_o nation_n of_o who_o sin_n i_o will_v not_o now_o take_v upon_o i_o to_o give_v you_o a_o large_a catalogue_n but_o they_o general_o empty_v themselves_o into_o these_o three_o capital_a evil_n ignorance_n ignorance_n covetousness_n and_o profaneness_n of_o the_o first_o i_o confess_v i_o can_v never_o think_v serious_o without_o tremble_v and_o scarce_o with_o any_o patience_n that_o no_o more_o be_v do_v anywhere_o to_o dispel_v that_o horrid_a mist_n of_o darkness_n that_o cover_v the_o face_n and_o heart_n of_o very_a many_o thousand_o in_o these_o day_n of_o light_n while_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n they_o themselves_o scorn_n and_o hate_n knowledge_n special_o because_o they_o see_v they_o may_v be_v let_v alone_o in_o it_o covetousness_n for_o the_o second_o it_o be_v apparent_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o country_n and_o of_o the_o city_n too_o and_o the_o general_a sin_n that_o at_o least_o all_o man_n well_o nigh_o be_v accuse_v of_o and_o cry_v out_o upon_o for_o and_o apparent_o in_o the_o most_o there_o be_v too_o much_o reason_n for_o such_o a_o cry_n go_v but_o into_o any_o place_n and_o what_o be_v the_o great_a business_n that_o you_o find_v every_o one_o almost_o set_v upon_o study_v how_o to_o be_v a_o gainer_n even_o by_o other_o loss_n at_o least_o to_o ease_v himself_o in_o public_a payment_n and_o taxation_n and_o lay_v great_a load_n upon_o other_o special_o upon_o those_o that_o be_v faithful_a if_o they_o can_v but_o get_v into_o a_o office_n have_v any_o thing_n to_o do_v in_o sequestration_n what_o be_v the_o improvement_n that_o be_v make_v of_o it_o by_o too_o many_o alas_o but_o to_o fill_v their_o own_o purse_n with_o extortion_n oppression_n delay_v and_o pervert_v justice_n and_o withal_o ordinary_o to_o favour_v malignant_n and_o overburden_v the_o best_a affect_a and_o most_o forward_o for_o the_o public_a service_n and_o above_o all_o other_o set_v themselves_o to_o make_v the_o faithful_a minister_n that_o be_v among_o they_o bear_v the_o great_a load_n
