this_o be_v well_o consider_v what_o care_n and_o diligence_n shall_v it_o stir_v up_o in_o the_o minister_n to_o pity_v this_o miserable_a condition_n of_o the_o people_n and_o with_o all_o earnestness_n and_o love_n to_o make_v the_o same_o know_v unto_o they_o and_o to_o dissuade_v they_o from_o it_o as_o much_o as_o in_o they_o lie_v for_o if_o god_n may_v just_o challenge_v saul_n for_o this_o serve_v he_o by_o half_n and_o slight_o what_o shall_v he_o have_v against_o they_o who_o a_o few_o thing_n except_v and_o those_o yet_o to_o small_a purpose_n serve_v he_o not_o at_o all_o in_o their_o common_a action_n and_o course_n of_o life_n and_o yet_o that_o this_o may_v be_v no_o defence_n for_o they_o that_o they_o go_v with_o other_o to_o the_o public_a place_n to_o worship_n god_n it_o may_v be_v true_o say_v that_o many_o of_o they_o do_v that_o more_o for_o love_n then_o for_o conscience_n and_o yet_o many_o here_o think_v that_o for_o that_o very_a action_n they_o be_v to_o be_v take_v for_o right_v good_a christian_n but_o now_o that_o i_o have_v prove_v that_o the_o most_o part_n come_v behind_o saul_n for_o the_o practice_n of_o religion_n professor_n and_o obedience_n to_o god_n give_v i_o leave_v to_o go_v a_o little_a further_o and_o by_o this_o occasion_n of_o saul_n sin_n to_o show_v they_o their_o face_n as_o it_o be_v in_o a_o glass_n who_o can_v in_o no_o wise_n prove_v themselves_o better_a than_o he_o be_v of_o this_o second_o sort_n therefore_o a_o little_a for_o i_o will_v be_v loath_a while_o i_o be_o speak_v against_o the_o serve_a of_o god_n by_o half_n to_o be_v just_o charge_v in_o this_o so_o weighty_a a_o matter_n to_o do_v my_o duty_n but_o by_o halse_n by_o speak_v but_o of_o the_o one_o half_a of_o they_o who_o the_o text_n concern_v to_o pass_v therefore_o from_o this_o sort_n of_o man_n to_o another_o which_o more_o near_o resemble_v saul_n and_o in_o outward_a appearance_n go_v far_o beyond_o the_o former_a in_o religious_a duty_n i_o make_v no_o doubt_n but_o that_o the_o great_a part_n who_o have_v any_o uprightnes_n of_o judgement_n and_o gift_n to_o discern_v will_v ready_o agree_v with_o i_o in_o that_o i_o have_v say_v of_o the_o former_a kind_n there_o will_v be_v great_a question_n about_o this_o latter_a not_o for_o that_o it_o be_v so_o doubtful_a but_o for_o that_o many_o be_v so_o blind_a in_o particular_a cause_n and_o so_o partial_a in_o judgement_n for_o otherwise_o even_o this_o may_v determine_v the_o question_n if_o in_o this_o time_n of_o clear_a light_n man_n can_v have_v no_o great_a proof_n of_o their_o godliness_n and_o sincerity_n than_o saul_n have_v in_o a_o time_n of_o grosser_n and_o deep_a darkness_n i_o hope_v none_o will_v deny_v but_o that_o they_o be_v as_o deep_a in_o the_o punishment_n and_o be_v as_o guilty_a of_o it_o and_o so_o continue_v shall_v as_o certain_o go_v under_o it_o as_o he_o do_v and_o to_o bewray_v those_o two_o sort_n of_o man_n i_o do_v as_o i_o say_v in_o the_o beginning_n unfold_v this_o scripture_n now_o therefore_o this_o i_o say_v if_o god_n can_v bear_v saul_n no_o long_o but_o give_v he_o over_o to_o be_v vex_v with_o a_o evil_a spirit_n as_o appear_v he_o do_v in_o the_o next_o chapter_n and_o that_o for_o his_o halt_n and_o obey_v god_n by_o half_n and_o for_o that_o he_o do_v it_o not_o in_o sincerity_n and_o faithful_o what_o hope_n have_v they_o to_o god-ward_o which_o do_v the_o like_a therefore_o if_o many_o now_o among_o we_o not_o only_a worship_n god_n public_o but_o also_o private_o take_v his_o word_n into_o their_o mouth_n so_o that_o outward_o and_o open_o they_o show_v themselves_o to_o be_v good_a christian_n yea_o if_o in_o many_o thing_n they_o do_v after_o the_o doctrine_n which_o they_o learn_v out_o of_o the_o word_n yet_o if_o they_o do_v it_o but_o in_o some_o thing_n and_o endeavour_v not_o in_o all_o well_o what_o uprightnes_n can_v be_v in_o they_o according_a to_o that_o of_o saint_n lame_v 2._o he_o that_o keep_v all_o the_o commandment_n and_o break_v some_o one_o of_o they_o be_v guilty_a of_o all_o meaning_n that_o he_o that_o will_v not_o be_v subject_a to_o god_n in_o one_o thing_n as_o well_o as_o in_o another_o shall_v show_v his_o contempt_n of_o god_n majesty_n who_o be_v the_o law_n giver_n even_o as_o he_o do_v who_o shall_v declare_v it_o in_o many_o thing_n which_o say_v of_o the_o apostle_n agree_v with_o that_o of_o the_o prophet_n ezechiell_n 18._o if_o a_o man_n be_v a_o thief_n or_o a_o shedder_n of_o blood_n or_o have_v defile_v his_o neighbour_n wife_n or_o if_o he_o do_v any_o one_o of_o these_o thing_n though_o he_o do_v not_o all_o of_o they_o but_o have_v oppress_v the_o poor_a or_o have_v give_v forth_o upon_o usury_n he_o shall_v die_v the_o death_n and_o his_o blood_n shall_v be_v upon_o he_o what_o can_v be_v more_o plain_a than_o this_o 10._o which_o the_o prophet_n speak_v to_o prove_v that_o these_o forename_a scripture_n that_o he_o which_o die_v with_o less_o than_o this_o and_o have_v not_o repent_v for_o it_o nor_o obtain_v pardon_n of_o it_o die_v in_o the_o displeasure_n of_o god_n and_o can_v be_v save_v and_o this_o be_v most_o fearful_a if_o we_o consider_v doctrine_n that_o if_o any_o believe_v this_o do_v address_v themselves_o to_o this_o care_n and_o practice_v they_o be_v by_o and_o by_o scorn_a and_o scoff_v at_o scorn_v and_o reproachful_o taunt_v and_o taw_v with_o odious_a and_o reproachful_a name_n of_o hypocrite_n and_o such_o like_a as_o if_o they_o will_v bold_o contend_v with_o and_o set_v themselves_o against_o god_n in_o their_o so_o do_v when_o he_o say_v on_o the_o one_o side_n to_o man_n except_o they_o live_v thus_o they_o be_v indeed_o hypocrite_n and_o can_v be_v save_v and_o they_o direct_o contrary_a answer_n and_o say_v if_o they_o do_v live_v thus_o they_o be_v dissembler_n fool_n and_o troublesome_a in_o which_o estate_n they_o can_v be_v save_v for_o let_v he_o that_o think_v himself_o wise_a of_o these_o contemner_n and_o discourager_n of_o their_o brethren_n speak_v be_v it_o for_o any_o other_o cause_n that_o be_v they_o will_v not_o say_v they_o do_v wicked_o and_o that_o they_o will_v do_v so_o still_o for_o then_o it_o may_v be_v hope_v that_o they_o may_v be_v make_v ashamed_a of_o so_o great_a be_v true_o humble_v they_o will_v do_v therefore_o let_v it_o be_v take_v for_o a_o clear_a note_n of_o rank_a hypocrisy_n when_o any_o be_v just_o charge_v and_o accuse_v of_o manifest_a and_o confess_v and_o for_o that_o here_o be_v other_o thing_n of_o weight_n to_o be_v consider_v of_o i_o will_v stay_v a_o while_n and_o refer_v that_o which_o i_o have_v to_o say_v about_o this_o matter_n of_o saul_n confession_n to_o these_o four_o point_n first_o i_o will_v show_v the_o odiousness_n of_o this_o sin_n in_o that_o he_o have_v so_o oft_o and_o bold_o deny_v his_o be_v in_o fault_n yet_o do_v now_o confess_v it_o second_o i_o will_v declare_v how_o and_o by_o what_o mean_n he_o be_v bring_v to_o confess_v it_o three_o see_v he_o do_v so_o which_o he_o be_v very_o unlike_a to_o come_v to_o whether_o in_o confess_v he_o repent_v also_o and_o four_a because_o it_o shall_v appear_v that_o he_o do_v not_o therefore_o even_o his_o very_a confession_n shall_v be_v see_v to_o be_v another_o note_n of_o hypocrisy_n in_o he_o doct._n 21._o a_o hypocrite_n make_v no_o conscience_n of_o lie_v concern_v the_o first_o of_o the_o foulness_n of_o his_o sin_n in_o that_o say_v he_o have_v fulfil_v the_o commandment_n of_o the_o lord_n when_o yet_o samuel_n charge_v he_o from_o god_n that_o he_o have_v break_v it_o and_o who_o almost_o may_v a_o man_n believe_v if_o he_o may_v not_o be_v rest_v in_o and_o give_v credit_n unto_o this_o be_v therefore_o to_o teach_v we_o that_o it_o be_v a_o most_o shameful_a and_o grievous_a offence_n when_o man_n hyd_fw-we to_o we_o when_o god_n shall_v pluck_v we_o out_o of_o our_o den_n and_o corner_n wherein_o we_o have_v hide_v ourselves_o and_o thus_o david_n who_o have_v not_o accuse_v himself_o for_o his_o foul_a and_o gross_a adultery_n and_o murder_n till_o nathan_n the_o prophet_n from_o god_n have_v challenge_v he_o for_o it_o yet_o after_o that_o cry_v out_o of_o his_o imborne_a corruption_n and_o affirm_v that_o to_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o the_o other_o say_v i_o be_v bear_v in_o sin_n and_o by_o that_o be_v carry_v to_o sin_n against_o thou_o in_o secret_a and_o so_o tell_v to_o shameful_a and_o open_a sin_n in_o the_o fight_n of_o man_n the_o use_n of_o this_o doctrine_n be_v use_v that_o we_o shall_v be_v wary_a against_o willing_a offending_n and_o if_o yet_o through_o frailty_n we_o prophet_n indeed_o i_o must_v needs_o say_v etc._n that_o this_o and_o such_o like_a example_n do_v teach_v that_o there_o be_v much_o falsehood_n and_o deceit_n in_o man_n heart_n and_o that_o further_a than_o we_o have_v proof_n and_o experience_n of_o man_n truth_n and_o sincerity_n in_o good_a conscience_n keep_v we_o ought_v not_o to_o be_v too_o credulous_a nor_o too_o ready_a to_o believe_v they_o in_o their_o own_o case_n when_o they_o pretend_v to_o tell_v a_o truth_n and_o go_v about_o to_o clear_v themselves_o from_o accusation_n and_o most_o of_o all_o if_o it_o be_v in_o a_o matter_n concern_v their_o profit_n or_o pleasure_n aswell_o as_o their_o credit_n for_o man_n will_v lie_v most_o gross_o to_o enrich_v themselves_o and_o to_o seek_v their_o pleasure_n and_o estimation_n and_o therefore_o when_o these_o be_v in_o jeopardy_n and_o can_v be_v uphold_v but_o by_o a_o lie_n he_o be_v a_o rare_a man_n which_o in_o such_o a_o case_n will_v not_o strain_v his_o conscience_n yea_o and_o go_v direct_o against_o it_o both_o secret_o in_o do_v and_o open_o in_o defend_v evil_a such_o a_o sway_n sin_n bear_v in_o a_o man_n and_o so_o dear_a it_o be_v to_o he_o to_o light_n or_o force_v they_o to_o confess_v their_o guiltiness_n at_o length_n even_o as_o we_o see_v it_o come_v to_o pass_v here_o in_o saul_n and_o daily_o do_v and_o have_v do_v in_o sundry_a other_o but_o the_o devil_n hold_v they_o at_o this_o point_n as_o long_o as_o he_o can_v in_o the_o hide_v or_o deny_v of_o the_o same_o till_o a_o strong_a than_o he_o who_o they_o be_v not_o able_a to_o resist_v constrain_v they_o to_o say_v we_o have_v sin_v and_o thus_o it_o be_v with_o saul_n themselves_o the_o lord_n will_v have_v the_o secret_n of_o his_o heart_n disclose_v who_o have_v so_o long_o and_o stiff_o deny_v his_o sin_n and_o therefore_o he_o will_v bring_v he_o to_o confession_n of_o it_o though_o to_o no_o benefit_n of_o his_o own_o yet_o for_o the_o instruction_n of_o his_o church_n to_o the_o world_n end_n it_o be_v neither_o wring_v from_o he_o by_o force_n for_o what_o man_n may_v constrain_v he_o neither_o be_v he_o bring_v to_o it_o by_o flattery_n for_o he_o that_o deal_v with_o he_o to_o confess_v be_v samuel_n the_o lord_n faithful_a prophet_n no_o neither_o do_v the_o most_o weighty_a convince_a he_o by_o the_o same_o prophet_n prevail_v with_o he_o nor_o persuade_v he_o to_o repentance_n nor_o so_o much_o as_o to_o knowledge_n his_o sin_n for_o that_o he_o have_v do_v in_o the_o verse_n go_v before_o but_o saul_n wash_v off_o all_o as_o we_o the_o lord_n therefore_o that_o draw_v he_o to_o confess_v and_o it_o may_v teach_v we_o that_o god_n who_o do_v wonderful_a thing_n he_o also_o force_v liar_n dissembler_n and_o such_o as_o none_o can_v wring_v from_o they_o the_o least_o acknowledgement_n of_o sin_n which_o yet_o be_v well_o know_v that_o they_o be_v guilty_a of_o it_o and_o do_v with_o tooth_n and_o nail_n as_o they_o say_v deny_v it_o yet_o after_o all_o this_o the_o lord_n will_v make_v even_o themselves_o to_o bring_v it_o to_o light_n &_o confess_v it_o and_o this_o he_o do_v for_o these_o end_n 1._o first_o that_o all_o may_v know_v how_o bad_a and_o vile_a the_o heart_n of_o man_n be_v and_o how_o stiff_o wilful_a and_o subtle_a it_o be_v yea_o and_o harden_v which_o will_v not_o easy_o be_v believe_v except_o the_o lord_n shall_v by_o some_o mean_n bewray_v it_o no_o other_o being_n more_o available_a hereto_o than_o the_o party_n own_o confession_n which_o be_v more_o than_o many_o witness_n second_o 2._o the_o lord_n do_v it_o to_o this_o end_n that_o we_o shall_v not_o hide_v deny_v or_o extenuate_v our_o sin_n when_o we_o be_v convict_v of_o they_o or_o when_o we_o ought_v free_o to_o confess_v they_o for_o by_o so_o do_v
as_o to_o make_v they_o see_v and_o confess_v as_o saul_n here_o do_v somewhat_o yet_o at_o time_n we_o have_v they_o in_o never_o the_o better_a case_n for_o all_o that_o but_o they_o deceive_v we_o still_o yea_o themselves_o rather_o &_o frustrate_v our_o hope_n that_o we_o shall_v seem_v to_o have_v do_v no_o good_a inweary_v ourselves_o about_o they_o so_o that_o the_o pprophecy_n be_v reap_v by_o their_o pain_n and_o travel_n they_o now_o may_v or_o be_v to_o be_v look_v for_o but_o yet_o to_o speak_v of_o the_o multitude_n and_o great_a number_n even_o where_o there_o be_v faithful_a labour_a yet_o there_o be_v small_a profit_v for_o though_o many_o come_v to_o confess_v of_o their_o sin_n as_o they_o do_v in_o the_o time_n of_o john_n baptist_n many_o than_o come_v yet_o become_v slave_n to_o it_o again_o this_o be_v in_o no_o wise_a tolerable_a such_o by_o custom_n and_o long_o lie_v therein_o provide_v that_o when_o they_o will_v show_v themselves_o best_o of_o all_o yet_o they_o can_v then_o deal_v plain_o but_o they_o shall_v bewray_v themselves_o to_o such_o as_o can_v judge_v that_o they_o do_v but_o halt_v and_o deal_v hollow_o as_o saul_n here_o much_o under_o the_o cross_n but_o by_o constraint_n and_o violence_n not_o willing_o and_o humble_o to_o justify_v god_n in_o his_o punish_n of_o they_o nor_o for_o that_o they_o be_v persuade_v he_o love_v they_o and_o therefore_o they_o can_v show_v none_o to_o he_o again_o and_o therefore_o if_o man_n can_v do_v no_o more_o but_o so_o idest_fw-la confess_v in_o theit_n affliction_n some_o
