to_o reason_n yet_o be_v they_o in_o truth_n injurious_a to_o religion_n who_o will_v allow_v nothing_o to_o be_v moral_a but_o what_o they_o can_v prove_v to_o be_v natural_a for_o the_o positive_a law_n of_o god_n do_v constitute_v morality_n to_o the_o christian_a as_o well_o as_o the_o inbred_a law_n of_o nature_n do_v constitute_v morality_n to_o the_o man_n this_o appear_v plain_o in_o the_o sacrament_n which_o be_v not_o to_o be_v account_v as_o ceremony_n because_o they_o come_v not_o under_o the_o authority_n of_o the_o church_n either_o for_o their_o institution_n or_o alteration_n or_o abolition_n and_o must_v therefore_o be_v account_v as_o morality_n though_o they_o be_v not_o at_o all_o command_v by_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n but_o only_o by_o the_o law_n of_o god_n that_o these_o sacrament_n be_v a_o part_n of_o the_o church_n trust_v be_v unquestionable_a because_o the_o gospel_n be_v for_o the_o vocal_a word_n and_o the_o visible_a word_n verbum_fw-la vocale_n &_o verbum_fw-la visibile_fw-la both_o alike_o be_v duty_n of_o the_o christian_a religion_n for_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n and_o of_o the_o christian_a communion_n for_o the_o edification_n of_o man_n but_o all_o the_o duty_n both_o of_o religion_n and_o communion_n be_v commit_v to_o the_o church_n trust_v god_n have_v appoint_v his_o own_o minister_n as_o his_o special_a trustee_n both_o for_o preach_v his_o word_n and_o for_o administer_a his_o sacrament_n so_o that_o no_o man_n can_v administer_v a_o sacrament_n but_o in_o the_o person_n of_o god_n and_o he_o have_v not_o license_v every_o one_o that_o will_v to_o take_v upon_o he_o his_o person_n but_o only_o such_o to_o who_o he_o have_v give_v his_o special_a deputation_n and_o this_o be_v more_o peculiarly_a manifest_a concern_v the_o two_o sacrament_n proper_o so_o call_v that_o be_v baptism_n and_o the_o lord_n holy_a supper_n for_o our_o bless_a saviour_n say_v only_o to_o his_o apostle_n go_v you_o therefore_o and_o baptize_v in_o respect_n of_o the_o one_o and_o do_v you_o this_o in_o remembrance_n of_o i_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o other_o as_o for_o the_o five_o additional_a sacrament_n they_o be_v never_o look_v upon_o as_o integral_a part_n of_o god_n ordinary_a public_a worship_n and_o therefore_o though_o they_o can_v be_v prove_v sacrament_n yet_o they_o will_v not_o come_v under_o our_o present_a discourse_n but_o in_o truth_n they_o can_v be_v prove_v sacrament_n according_a to_o the_o proper_a definition_n of_o a_o sacrament_n which_o be_v this_o a_o sacrament_n be_v a_o outward_a visible_a sign_n of_o a_o inward_a spiritual_a grace_n give_v to_o we_o and_o ordain_v by_o christ_n himself_o as_o a_o mean_n to_o convey_v that_o grace_n and_o as_o a_o pledge_n to_o assure_v we_o thereof_o let_v we_o examine_v this_o definition_n by_o its_o cause_n and_o we_o shall_v easy_o perceive_v that_o it_o belong_v only_o to_o baptism_n and_o the_o holy_a eucharist_n and_o therefore_o they_o two_o only_o be_v to_o be_v call_v sacrament_n first_o by_o its_o efficient_a cause_n give_v and_o ordain_v by_o christ_n himself_o which_o be_v clear_a of_o these_o two_o for_o they_o be_v institute_v by_o he_o and_o have_v his_o precept_n and_o promise_n in_o the_o very_a word_n of_o their_o institution_n which_o can_v be_v assert_v concern_v any_o of_o the_o other_o second_o by_o its_o material_a cause_n outward_a visible_a sign_n inward_a spiritual_a grace_n which_o be_v both_o manifest_o know_v in_o baptism_n and_o the_o holy_a eucharist_n but_o neither_o in_o any_o of_o the_o rest_n for_o penance_n have_v no_o outward_a visible_a sign_n at_o all_o and_o matrimony_n order_n confirmation_n extreme_a unction_n have_v no_o outward_a visible_a sign_n of_o christ_n appoint_v and_o much_o less_o have_v any_o of_o these_o that_o inward_a spiritual_a grace_n which_o be_v annex_v to_o baptism_n and_o the_o holy_a eucharist_n to_o wit_n christ_n with_o all_o his_o merit_n and_o mercy_n whereby_o of_o god_n he_o be_v make_v unto_o we_o wisdom_n and_o righteousness_n and_o sanctification_n and_o redemption_n 1_o cor._n 1._o 30._o for_o we_o dare_v not_o say_v that_o any_o man_n be_v by_o any_o of_o these_o five_o either_o bear_v and_o initiate_v or_o nourish_v and_o confirm_v in_o christ_n three_o by_o its_o formal_a cause_n an_o outward_a visible_a sign_n of_o a_o inward_a spiritual_a grace_n whereby_o it_o appear_v that_o the_o internal_a and_o proper_a form_n of_o a_o sacrament_n be_v the_o necessary_a conjunction_n or_o connexion_n of_o the_o sign_n and_o the_o thing_n signify_v which_o conjunction_n be_v so_o undeniable_a in_o our_o two_o sacrament_n that_o baptism_n be_v call_v the_o wash_n of_o regeneration_n tit._n 3._o 5._o and_o the_o holy_a eucharist_n the_o communion_n of_o the_o body_n and_o blood_n of_o christ_n 1_o cor._n 10._o 16._o for_o that_o these_o two_o be_v not_o only_a sign_n and_o seal_n but_o also_o conveyance_n of_o grace_n unto_o the_o soul_n whereas_o the_o other_o five_o though_o they_o have_v something_o of_o the_o sign_n yet_o they_o have_v nothing_o at_o all_o of_o the_o seal_n or_o of_o the_o conveyance_n of_o grace_n last_o by_o its_o final_a cause_n as_o a_o mean_n to_o convey_v grace_n and_o as_o a_o pledge_n to_o assure_v we_o thereof_o the_o end_n of_o a_o sacrament_n be_v partly_o our_o communion_n with_o christ_n and_o partly_o our_o acknowledgement_n of_o that_o communion_n this_o twofold_a end_n be_v very_o apparent_a in_o baptism_n and_o in_o the_o holy_a eucharist_n which_o do_v procure_v our_o communion_n with_o christ_n and_o also_o require_v our_o acknowledgement_n of_o that_o communion_n but_o in_o the_o rest_n either_o the_o one_o be_v without_o the_o other_o or_o there_o be_v a_o want_n of_o both_o for_o either_o there_o be_v no_o communion_n with_o christ_n or_o there_o be_v no_o acknowledgement_n of_o that_o communion_n whereas_o a_o sacrament_n be_v a_o seal_n of_o god_n covenant_n and_o therefore_o in_o its_o own_o nature_n be_v a_o double_a pledge_n to_o wit_n of_o god_n grace_n and_o favour_n to_o man_n and_o of_o man_n duty_n and_o thankfulness_n to_o god_n for_o as_o it_o be_v a_o sign_n of_o god_n grace_n to_o we_o so_o it_o shall_v be_v a_o sign_n of_o god_n grace_n in_o we_o for_o in_o the_o very_a signification_n of_o a_o sacrament_n there_o be_v a_o mutual_a respect_n one_o on_o god_n part_n offer_v grace_n another_o on_z man_n part_n promise_v obedience_n if_o either_o of_o these_o be_v want_v the_o holy_a rite_n may_v be_v a_o mystery_n but_o it_o can_v be_v a_o sacrament_n proper_o so_o call_v since_o a_o sacrament_n be_v the_o seal_n of_o a_o covenant_n and_o a_o covenant_n be_v a_o mutual_a engagement_n of_o two_o party_n which_o in_o this_o case_n be_v god_n and_o man._n therefore_o a_o sacrament_n be_v from_o the_o very_a end_n of_o its_o institution_n perpetual_a in_o its_o continuance_n and_o common_a in_o its_o use_n perpetual_a in_o its_o continuance_n because_o god_n covenant_n be_v not_o for_o a_o day_n but_o for_o ever_o it_o be_v a_o everlasting_a covenant_n and_o common_a in_o its_o use_n because_o god_n covenant_n be_v not_o for_o one_o but_o for_o all_o it_o be_v a_o general_a a_o universal_a covenant_n non_fw-la enim_fw-la propter_fw-la unius_fw-la seculi_fw-la homines_fw-la
