than_o be_v yet_o to_o be_v do_v against_o our_o brethren_n and_o if_o other_o judge_n have_v turn_v the_o edge_n of_o the_o law_n against_o protestant_n our_o magistrate_n have_v not_o be_v forward_o to_o take_v the_o hilt_n and_o lay_v on_o how_o many_o thousand_o by_o their_o presumption_n upon_o lenity_n have_v be_v more_o open_a than_o they_o will_v haven_n be_v but_o suppose_v they_o spare_v the_o sheep_n and_o take_v away_o the_o shepherd_n the_o destruction_n will_v be_v great_a all_z the_o most_o of_o they_o have_v will_v not_o satisfy_v this_o debt_n to_o the_o law_n be_v it_o not_o enough_o for_o they_o to_o be_v dispossess_v of_o their_o preferment_n to_o be_v drive_v from_o place_n to_o place_n but_o once_o more_o they_o must_v be_v undo_v without_o regard_n to_o age_n more_o undo_v their_o suffering_n will_v not_o terminate_v upon_o they_o who_o shall_v set_v they_o up_o again_o bring_v up_o their_o child_n feed_v and_o clothe_v they_o their_o ruin_n will_v be_v a_o intolerable_a oppression_n upon_o many_o part_n of_o the_o kingdom_n 2._o will_v not_o this_o unsettle_v the_o affection_n wherein_o the_o strength_n of_o government_n do_v consist_v together_o with_o religion_n and_o conscience_n of_o thousand_o more_o than_o can_v be_v spare_v if_o other_o danger_n arise_v and_o if_o religion_n and_o conscience_n oblige_v they_o to_o love_v their_o persecutor_n and_o pray_v for_o they_o they_o will_v never_o dare_v to_o trust_v they_o a_o mutual_a trust_n and_o confidence_n be_v a_o great_a strength_n in_o time_n of_o common_a danger_n when_o we_o be_v distract_v in_o affection_n we_o shall_v be_v distract_v in_o reason_n and_o counsel_n and_o when_o we_o be_v so_o then_o be_v the_o time_n for_o a_o popish_a army_n to_o unsettle_v all_o it_o be_v well_o know_v that_o the_o dissenter_n be_v a_o great_a and_o a_o active_a part_n of_o the_o kingdom_n and_o if_o they_o suffer_v by_o protestant_n they_o will_v be_v afraid_a to_o unite_v with_o they_o and_o therefore_o to_o persecute_v they_o be_v as_o ill_a a_o service_n as_o to_o cut_v off_o a_o great_a and_o potent_a part_n of_o religious_a and_o industrious_a man_n from_o our_o main_a strength_n when_o we_o most_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o increase_a friendship_n confidence_n and_o strength_n the_o unsettle_v of_o affection_n move_v of_o passion_n which_o religion_n can_v subdue_v in_o all_o be_v a_o effectual_a way_n to_o unsettle_v all_o 3._o the_o prosecution_n of_o dissent_v protestant_n tend_v to_o no_o other_o end_n but_o to_o disunite_v affection_n it_o be_v to_o use_v force_n without_o reason_n or_o persuasion_n the_o reason_n of_o the_o dissent_v brethren_n be_v as_o far_o from_o satisfaction_n as_o to_o our_o conformity_n as_o ever_o and_o their_o satisfaction_n in_o their_o dissent_n do_v daily_o increase_v to_o use_v force_n without_o reason_n be_v not_o reasonable_a and_o that_o force_v which_o be_v use_v to_o suppress_v and_o cut_v off_o must_v needs_o be_v to_o disunite_v the_o heart_n of_o men._n to_o suppress_v they_o signify_v plain_o they_o have_v no_o value_n for_o they_o that_o they_o hate_v they_o as_o unworthy_a to_o dwell_v in_o any_o place_n but_o a_o goal_n or_o to_o lie_v upon_o any_o ped_n but_o straw_n they_o be_v first_o exile_v from_o their_o good_a thought_n and_o opinion_n next_o from_o their_o affection_n next_o they_o be_v judge_v insufferable_a and_o they_o that_o will_v drive_v they_o out_o of_o all_o will_v proceed_v to_o banishment_n and_o then_o he_o that_o be_v not_o think_v worthy_a to_o live_v with_o we_o in_o the_o same_o land_n be_v repute_v next_o he_o that_o be_v not_o worthy_a to_o live_v at_o all_o and_o be_v this_o the_o way_n to_o win_v their_o affection_n and_o if_o they_o shall_v force_v any_o to_o abjure_v his_o native_a country_n they_o force_v he_o against_o nature_n and_o that_o be_v to_o root_v out_o affection_n now_o suppose_v the_o dissenter_n be_v not_o whole_o you_o yet_o if_o you_o care_v for_o they_o at_o all_o you_o will_v nourish_v some_o inclination_n in_o they_o and_o not_o thrust_v they_o from_o you_o but_o drive_v in_o those_o inclination_n to_o peace_n with_o you_o 4._o it_o be_v plain_o the_o make_n of_o a_o breach_n among_o protestant_n the_o more_o weak_a and_o passionate_a will_v be_v far_o more_o out_o with_o the_o bishop_n than_o they_o be_v before_o 1._o because_o they_o at_o the_o first_o refuse_v to_o condescend_v and_o procure_v that_o act_n of_o uniformity_n by_o which_o they_o must_v needs_o know_v a_o vast_a breach_n will_v follow_v 2._o because_o they_o can_v look_v upon_o the_o suffer_a of_o protestant_n without_o compassion_n so_o much_o as_o not_o to_o make_v intercession_n for_o they_o the_o brethren_n and_o all_o that_o suffer_v in_o they_o will_v be_v tempt_v to_o hate_v the_o bishop_n and_o say_v this_o do_v proceed_v from_o they_o or_o some_o of_o they_o and_o this_o be_v another_o way_n to_o unsettle_v all_o beside_o it_o tend_v to_o divide_v the_o heart_n of_o the_o ignorant_a and_o rash_a censorious_a multitude_n from_o their_o fellow-christians_a as_o if_o they_o be_v worse_o than_o papist_n as_o enemy_n to_o the_o king_n and_o government_n as_o disturber_n of_o order_n by_o their_o preach_a and_o preciseness_n it_o will_v alienate_v abundance_n of_o people_n that_o either_o actual_o suffer_v or_o have_v any_o compassion_n to_o they_o that_o suffer_v from_o abundance_n of_o conform_v minister_n who_o help_v on_o the_o work_n of_o pull_v down_o of_o conventicle_n and_o this_o be_v another_o mean_n that_o will_v cooperate_v to_o our_o unsettlement_n of_o all_o 5._o this_o be_v the_o way_n to_o unsettle_v all_o by_o undo_v what_o have_v be_v do_v towards_o a_o accommodation_n or_o a_o union_n both_o by_o late_a honour_a and_o ever_o to_o be_v honour_v parliament_n from_o the_o year_n 1673_o to_o the_o last_o at_o westminster_n and_o all_o the_o endeavous_a of_o our_o reverend_a father_n protestant_n divine_v and_o gentleman_n towards_o a_o desirable_a union_n as_o a_o treaty_n of_o peace_n tend_v to_o a_o settlement_n so_o the_o break_n of_o a_o treaty_n tend_v to_o a_o unsettlement_n this_o zealous_a prosecution_n be_v like_o a_o vow_v there_o shall_v be_v no_o peace_n for_o it_o plain_o break_v off_o the_o treaty_n 6._o this_o tend_v to_o unsettle_v all_o as_o it_o be_v a_o open_a violent_a rush_v against_o the_o reason_n of_o our_o late_a protestant_a parliament_n as_o their_o reason_n and_o debate_n do_v determine_v in_o a_o resolve_v for_o settlement_n so_o these_o out_o of_o enmity_n against_o they_o and_o their_o proceed_n labour_v to_o unsettle_v all_o before_o they_o can_v have_v time_n to_o meet_v to_o offer_v any_o thing_n towards_o a_o happy_a settlement_n to_o divide_v the_o king_n from_o his_o parliament_n to_o undo_v what_o many_o parliament_n have_v resolve_v to_o do_v to_o prosecute_v protestant_n against_o the_o mind_n of_o protestant_n to_o disgrace_v the_o name_n and_o to_o break_v and_o weaken_v the_o thing_n be_v also_o the_o way_n to_o unsettle_v all_o 7._o except_o they_o deal_v worse_o by_o our_o protestant_a nonconformist_n than_o they_o will_v deal_v with_o papist_n they_o can_v but_o drive_v they_o to_o their_o private_a hou'e_n and_o corner_n and_o keep_v they_o to_o they_o and_o another_o argument_n from_o this_o head_n do_v offer_v itself_o will_v be_v a_o great_a evil_n than_o what_o the_o church_n or_o state_n can_v ever_o suffer_v from_o open_a meeting_n and_o that_o as_o operate_a more_o way_n than_o one_o 1._o because_o our_o heart_n will_v be_v more_o divide_v man_n passion_n incense_v man_n reason_n sharpen_v and_o all_o way_n of_o reconciliation_n stop_v the_o conquer_a churchman_n will_v not_o offer_v treaty_n the_o break_a and_o oppress_a church_n will_v not_o be_v hear_v all_o their_o argument_n and_o book_n will_v operate_v no_o more_o than_o the_o tear_n of_o the_o afflict_a soften_v the_o heart_n of_o they_o that_o afflict_v they_o 2._o the_o schism_n than_o will_v so_o far_o be_v protect_v that_o this_o law_n against_o conventicle_n can_v touch_v they_o and_o i_o do_v hubble_o conceive_v that_o this_o act_n against_o conventicle_n be_v never_o intend_v for_o the_o good_a or_o growth_n of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n other_o i_o mean_v the_o oxford_n act_n and_o the_o other_o or_o the_o protestant_a cause_n 1._o because_o they_o that_o move_v in_o it_o be_v move_v by_o a_o spirit_n of_o popery_n be_v notorious_o know_v who_o be_v sir_n tho._n cl._n and_o the_o rest_n abovenamed_a 2._o it_o be_v as_o cunning_a a_o subterraneous_a conveyance_n for_o popery_n as_o can_v be_v think_v of_o to_o be_v make_v by_o a_o law_n
and_o latter_a time_n in_o their_o controversial_n that_o sure_o these_o man_n be_v a_o excellent_a part_n of_o the_o church_n inspire_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o grace_n and_o truth_n and_o deserve_v better_a usage_n and_o a_o high_a place_n than_o a_o barn_n or_o a_o hall_n to_o preach_v in_o in_o speak_v well_o of_o the_o nonconformist_n i_o have_v follow_v the_o example_n of_o they_o that_o i_o reckon_v among_o the_o chief_a of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n and_o if_o my_o affection_n to_o they_o and_o in_o they_o to_o christian_a and_o protestant_a name_n and_o religion_n have_v prevail_v upon_o i_o to_o a_o unusual_a undertake_n if_o it_o be_v not_o pardonable_a with_o some_o if_o it_o be_v acceptable_a to_o jesus_n christ_n and_o suitable_a to_o the_o mind_n of_o many_o good_a man_n in_o the_o church_n and_o do_v some_o tolerable_a service_n to_o the_o suffer_a part_n i_o doubt_v not_o but_o i_o shall_v be_v save_v without_o the_o pardon_n of_o they_o that_o can_v pardon_v the_o virtue_n of_o moderation_n any_o more_o than_o the_o aggravate_v offence_n of_o nonconformity_n i_o have_v go_v no_o further_o than_o to_o plead_v a_o trample_a cause_n which_o they_o that_o hold_v it_o think_v too_o good_a and_o precious_a to_o be_v tread_v on_o by_o the_o proud_a foot_n as_o sit_v to_o be_v take_v into_o consideration_n by_o the_o wisdom_n and_o authority_n of_o the_o nation_n i_o have_v not_o presume_v to_o make_v proposal_n or_o demand_n that_o be_v leave_v to_o wise_a and_o great_a men._n but_o if_o some_o of_o our_o eminent_a separation_n eminent_a dr._n still_v preface_n to_o the_o vnreasonab_n of_o separation_n churchman_n have_v make_v proposal_n of_o abatement_n and_o have_v not_o violate_v their_o subscription_n not_o to_o endeavour_v any_o alteration_n of_o the_o government_n in_o church_n or_o state_n i_o hope_v i_o have_v not_o forfeit_v my_o sonship_n or_o break_a faith_n by_o do_v far_o less_o and_o keep_v within_o the_o bound_n of_o a_o well-meaning_a man._n and_o so_o much_o and_o perhaps_o too_o much_o by_o way_n of_o apology_n i_o have_v open_v in_o the_o plea_n the_o hardness_n of_o the_o case_n greatness_n of_o the_o suffering_n worthiness_n of_o the_o person_n of_o the_o nonconformist_n and_o the_o loss_n to_o the_o church_n by_o their_o exclusion_n or_o suppression_n i_o may_v infer_v conclusion_n from_o every_o of_o those_o head_n of_o the_o argument_n and_o drive_v the_o plea_n more_o home_n but_o now_o because_o their_o suffering_n be_v like_a to_o be_v more_o and_o great_a and_o they_o be_v to_o be_v a_o carcase_n to_o the_o eagle_n i_o will_v take_v leave_n to_o discuss_v this_o seasonable_a and_o necessary_a question_n q._n whether_o it_o be_v not_o better_o that_o the_o penal_a law_n against_o the_o nonconformist_n to_o which_o they_o be_v obnoxious_a by_o their_o preach_a and_o pray_v and_o other_o religious_a exercise_n shall_v not_o be_v execute_v but_o forbear_v rather_o than_o put_v in_o execution_n until_o such_o time_n as_o our_o gracious_a king_n and_o parliament_n in_o time_n to_o come_v shall_v mature_o take_v the_o state_n of_o divide_a protestant_n into_o their_o wise_a think_v high_a presumption_n in_o a_o private_a person_n to_o determine_v which_o be_v the_o better_a but_o i_o conceive_v that_o because_o the_o civil_a magistrate_n be_v not_o omniscient_a but_o out_o of_o warrant_n but_o if_o there_o be_v a_o preacher_n among_o they_o and_o any_o solemnity_n in_o the_o duty_n of_o religion_n this_o become_v offensive_a and_o liable_a to_o the_o law_n it_o be_v the_o exercise_n of_o religion_n that_o give_v the_o offence_n and_o make_v the_o company_n guilty_a and_o how_o punishment_n fall_v upon_o such_o when_o meet_v without_o weapon_n or_o quarrel_v or_o disturbance_n of_o the_o peace_n to_o make_v it_o a_o riot_n but_o for_o religion_n be_v not_o to_o be_v think_v there_o be_v no_o question_n to_o be_v make_v but_o many_o justice_n have_v be_v guilty_a of_o gross_a persecution_n abuse_v the_o law_n to_o the_o service_n of_o their_o anger_n and_o revenge_n and_o have_v go_v beyond_o the_o law_n when_o they_o have_v want_v sufficient_a evidence_n either_o of_o preach_v pray_v or_o expound_v or_o of_o any_o preacher_n be_v in_o company_n but_o have_v tell_v the_o informer_n if_o they_o hear_v but_o a_o tone_n like_o preach_v it_o be_v sufficient_a it_o can_v be_v prove_v of_o one_o justice_n that_o without_o any_o other_o proof_n send_v out_o his_o warrant_n to_o levy_v upon_o the_o good_n of_o they_o that_o be_v present_a and_o i_o have_v see_v a_o copy_n of_o another_o warrant_n for_o levy_v of_o 20_o l._n when_o it_o be_v not_o prove_v that_o there_o be_v a_o preacher_n in_o the_o house_n if_o these_o be_v true_a than_o such_o executioner_n of_o justice_n do_v execute_v for_o religion_n and_o for_o no_o other_o offence_n such_o also_o as_o threaten_v they_o will_v not_o leave_v a_o meetinghouse_n stand_v who_o know_v bo_z h_o the_o preacher_n and_o their_o auditor_n to_o be_v peaceable_a person_n and_o can_v pretend_v any_o cause_n of_o fear_n from_o their_o assembly_n do_v threaten_v as_o displease_v with_o their_o religious_a exercise_n and_o for_o no_o other_o cause_n for_o if_o they_o can_v suffer_v many_o lazy_a irreligious_a person_n to_o absent_a from_o church_n and_o not_o punish_v they_o though_o they_o have_v no_o lawful_a cause_n of_o their_o absence_n and_o threaten_v to_o punish_v they_o that_o be_v religious_a but_o in_o another_o way_n it_o be_v not_o conscience_n and_o zeal_n of_o duty_n to_o the_o public_a worship_n that_o move_v they_o for_o than_o they_o will_v punish_v the_o lazy_a 〈◊〉_d idle_a or_o profane_a and_o say_v they_o will_v not_o suffer_v any_o person_n to_o be_v absent_a from_o the_o common-prayer_n but_o be_v zealous_a against_o some_o as_o against_o other_o but_o this_o be_v not_o the_o temper_n of_o all_o therefore_o i_o will_v not_o bring_v in_o a_o charge_n of_o persecution_n against_o all_o but_o i_o will_v endeavour_v to_o show_v what_o be_v require_v of_o a_o man_n that_o can_v be_v say_v to_o persecute_v and_o leave_v it_o to_o the_o examination_n and_o sentence_n of_o every_o man_n conscience_n 1._o he_o must_v be_v a_o know_a man_n not_o in_o christian_a religion_n in_o general_a only_o but_o in_o these_o controvert_v point_n about_o religion_n he_o must_v not_o be_v so_o senseless_a as_o to_o call_v religion_n sedition_n nor_o to_o make_v a_o different_a form_n to_o be_v a_o different_a religion_n or_o that_o religion_n be_v subvert_v by_o a_o difference_n from_o some_o humane_a constitution_n he_o must_v be_v a_o know_a man_n lest_o he_o rush_v ignorant_o upon_o the_o servant_n of_o christ_n paul_n be_v a_o persecuter_n when_o he_o be_v ignorant_a ignorance_n do_v excuse_v he_o from_o the_o malice_n but_o not_o from_o the_o persecution_n he_o must_v not_o only_o think_v he_o do_v god_n good_a service_n for_o so_o do_v other_o who_o for_o all_o their_o thought_n do_v persecute_v the_o disciple_n but_o be_v sure_a he_o do_v god_n good_a service_n 2._o he_o must_v be_v a_o sincere_a lover_n of_o jesus_n christ_n of_o his_o holy_a ordinance_n of_o all_o that_o believe_v on_o he_o and_o that_o worship_v he_o for_o if_o he_o hate_v christ_n hate_v his_o gospel_n preach_v pray_v and_o religious_a duty_n or_o hate_v the_o disciple_n of_o christ_n he_o must_v needs_o be_v a_o persecutor_n and_o of_o the_o grosser_n sort_n 3._o he_o must_v be_v sincere_a in_o what_o he_o do_v for_o the_o thing_n which_o he_o do_v he_o must_v be_v satisfy_v that_o he_o do_v well_o and_o he_o must_v intend_v the_o glory_n of_o god_n and_o the_o honour_n and_o preservation_n of_o religion_n in_o it_o if_o he_o pretend_v in_o his_o warrant_n sedition_n or_o evil_a design_n when_o there_o be_v none_o he_o act_v false_o and_o pretend_v that_o to_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o his_o command_n which_o he_o very_o know_v be_v not_o the_o cause_n as_o not_o be_v as_o much_o as_o allege_a or_o prove_v if_o he_o thus_o proceed_v he_o strike_v at_o religion_n under_o pretence_n of_o sedition_n and_o rebellion_n 4._o he_o must_v consider_v the_o circumstance_n of_o the_o person_n both_o preacher_n and_o hearer_n the_o time_n of_o their_o meeting_n the_o need_n they_o have_v in_o their_o place_n and_o other_o circumstance_n but_o if_o without_o examination_n or_o make_v any_o difference_n for_o his_o information_n he_o follow_v the_o story_n of_o the_o informer_n then_o
