concern_v those_o that_o in_o trouble_n and_o anguish_n of_o conscience_n be_v ready_a to_o lay_v violent_a hand_n upon_o themselves_o to_o take_v away_o their_o life_n one_o will_v think_v this_o point_n thus_o open_v and_o apply_v might_n for_o ever_o keep_v back_o such_o a_o temptation_n for_o time_n to_o come_v what_o a_o infinite_a desperate_a folly_n be_v this_o that_o i_o that_o be_o make_v sensible_a of_o god_n wrath_n and_o be_o afraid_a of_o it_o shall_v yet_o do_v that_o which_o may_v put_v i_o irrecoverable_o into_o it_o and_o state_n i_o eternal_o in_o it_o as_o they_o do_v who_o lie_v violent_a hand_n upon_o themselves_o if_o any_o people_n in_o the_o world_n shall_v desire_v the_o continuance_n of_o their_o life_n and_o prize_v they_o at_o a_o high_a rate_n those_o that_o be_v trouble_v in_o conscience_n shall_v do_v it_o they_o shall_v pray_v david_n prayer_n psalm_n 39_o 13._o o_o spare_v i_o that_o i_o may_v recover_v strength_n before_o i_o go_v hence_o his_o mercy_n towards_o they_o and_o restore_v they_o again_o perhaps_o in_o this_o condition_n when_o thou_o see_v and_o have_v the_o judgement_n in_o thy_o own_o heart_n that_o thy_o time_n be_v go_v thou_o then_o make_v promise_n and_o say_v o_o if_o god_n will_v spare_v my_o life_n what_o a_o new_a man_n will_v i_o be_v i_o will_v be_v sure_a to_o make_v use_n of_o my_o time_n in_o another_o manner_n then_o ever_o heretofore_o well_o god_n have_v raise_v thou_o up_o again_o and_o what_o then_o why_o now_o thou_o will_v venture_v upon_o god_n patience_n and_o his_o wrath_n too_o shall_v be_v send_v by_o god_n to_o the_o gate_n of_o hell_n with_o this_o message_n o_o you_o damn_a spirit_n know_v from_o the_o lord_n that_o there_o be_v a_o possibility_n for_o you_o to_o be_v save_v certain_o they_o will_v with_o joyfulness_n hearken_v to_o such_o tiding_n now_o this_o can_v be_v preach_v to_o they_o but_o this_o may_v be_v this_o be_v preach_v to_o the_o vile_a and_o wicked_a wretch_n and_o enemy_n to_o god_n and_o goodness_n that_o be_v in_o the_o congregation_n and_o god_n declare_v this_o now_o to_o you_o but_o how_o long_o it_o will_v be_v before_o judgement_n come_v to_o state_n thou_o in_o another_o condition_n thou_o can_v not_o tell_v therefore_o know_v in_o this_o thy_o day_n the_o thing_n of_o thy_o eternal_a peace_n and_o who_o know_v what_o may_v depend_v upon_o one_o day_n yet_o prayer_n and_o tear_n may_v do_v thou_o good_a but_o stay_v a_o while_n and_o though_o stream_n of_o blood_n shall_v flow_v from_o thou_o and_o thou_o shall_v cry_v and_o howl_v to_o god_n to_o all_o eternity_n it_o will_v never_o do_v it_o therefore_o know_v your_o time_n it_o be_v a_o happy_a thing_n for_o a_o man_n to_o do_v a_o business_n in_o such_o a_o so_o after_o vanity_n if_o a_o man_n that_o be_v wild_a in_o his_o thought_n and_o that_o have_v his_o eye_n rove_a up_o and_o down_o shall_v have_v one_o say_v to_o he_o sir_n consider_v what_o you_o in_o this_o how_o he_o be_v above_o all_o thing_n and_o that_o there_o be_v none_o like_o to_o he_o i_o will_v therefore_o but_o brief_o name_v a_o few_o passage_n and_o apply_v this_o particular_a and_o pass_v to_o the_o second_o that_o we_o shall_v dwell_v long_o upon_o there_o be_v none_o like_o to_o god_n first_o in_o that_o whatever_o be_v in_o god_n be_v god_n himself_o this_o be_v a_o propriety_n of_o god_n there_o be_v no_o creature_n have_v any_o excellency_n in_o it_o that_o reach_v to_o this_o excellency_n that_o whatever_o be_v in_o that_o creature_n shall_v be_v the_o be_v of_o it_o all_o creature_n be_v make_v up_o of_o several_a thing_n but_o now_o whatever_o be_v in_o god_n be_v god_n himself_o again_o there_o be_v a_o universal_a goodness_n in_o god_n and_o there_o be_v none_o like_o to_o he_o in_o that_o one_o creature_n have_v one_o good_a in_o it_o and_o another_o another_z but_o god_n have_v all_o good_a in_o he_o there_o be_v all_o excellency_n and_o beauty_n in_o god_n in_o a_o eminent_a manner_n there_o be_v none_o like_o to_o he_o in_o that_o and_o then_o all_o being_n be_v but_o one_o excellency_n in_o god_n however_o we_o apprehend_v god_n in_o several_a excellency_n one_o attribute_n shine_v through_o one_o creature_n and_o another_o through_o another_o yet_o all_o be_v unite_v in_o god_n and_o all_o that_o be_v in_o he_o be_v primitive_o in_o he_o he_o be_v of_o himself_o and_o from_o himself_o and_o for_o himself_o and_o then_o none_o can_v communicate_v himself_o so_o as_o god_n can_v none_o can_v inflict_v evil_a or_o convey_v good_a so_o as_o god_n can_v and_o that_o this_o expression_n of_o god_n have_v reference_n too_o for_o it_o be_v peculiar_a to_o god_n to_o communicate_v as_o much_o of_o himself_o as_o he_o will_v which_o no_o creature_n can_v do_v though_o the_o creature_n have_v but_o little_a some_o drop_n only_o of_o goodness_n in_o comparison_n of_o the_o infinite_a ocean_n that_o be_v in_o god_n yet_o the_o creature_n can_v communicate_v of_o those_o drop_n as_o it_o will_v it_o be_v the_o propriety_n of_o god_n only_o to_o communicate_v of_o his_o goodness_n as_o he_o will_n and_o not_o only_o so_o but_o he_o can_v make_v the_o creature_n that_o he_o communicate_v his_o goodness_n to_o to_o be_v as_o sensible_a of_o his_o goodness_n as_o he_o please_v which_o none_o else_o can_v do_v though_o one_o creature_n can_v communicate_v good_a to_o another_o yet_o it_o can_v make_v that_o creature_n as_o sensible_a of_o that_o good_a as_o it_o will_v which_o god_n can_v do_v and_o so_o in_o inflict_v of_o evil_n there_o be_v none_o like_o to_o the_o lord_n in_o that_o the_o lord_n be_v able_a to_o let_v out_o all_o evil_a to_o bring_v all_o evil_a at_o once_o which_o none_o else_o can_v do_v and_o he_o be_v able_a to_o make_v the_o creature_n upon_o who_o he_o inflict_v a_o evil_a to_o be_v as_o sensible_a of_o that_o evil_a as_o he_o will_v one_o that_o hurt_v another_o yet_o can_v make_v he_o as_o sensible_a of_o that_o hurt_n as_o he_o please_v but_o this_o be_v the_o propriety_n of_o god_n as_o he_o can_v bring_v all_o evil_a together_o so_o he_o be_v able_a to_o make_v the_o creature_n as_o sensible_a of_o all_o as_o he_o will_v and_o god_n challenge_v this_o as_o his_o own_o propriety_n that_o he_o alone_o can_v do_v good_a and_o he_o alone_o can_v do_v evil_a and_o therefore_o there_o be_v none_o like_o to_o he_o from_o hence_o it_o follow_v then_o that_o there_o be_v none_o to_o be_v worship_v as_o the_o lord_n there_o be_v none_o to_o be_v honour_v as_o the_o lord_n the_o heathen_a god_n because_o they_o do_v but_o communicate_v some_o particular_a good_a therefore_o they_o challenge_v but_o particular_a service_n external_a worship_n and_o worship_n in_o some_o particular_n will_v serve_v the_o heathen_a god_n and_o they_o be_v satisfy_v with_o it_o and_o require_v no_o more_o and_o there_o be_v reason_n for_o it_o because_o they_o can_v not_o challenge_v to_o themselves_o a_o communication_n of_o a_o universal_a good_a for_o one_o god_n be_v for_o one_o particular_a good_a and_o another_o for_o another_o particular_a good_a and_o therefore_o they_o have_v but_o particular_a worship_n suitable_a thereunto_o but_o now_o there_o be_v none_o like_o to_o the_o lord_n he_o challenge_v a_o universal_a worship_n and_o obedience_n thou_o shall_v worship_v the_o lord_n thy_o god_n with_o all_o thy_o heart_n and_o soul_n and_o strength_n so_o that_o there_o be_v no_o such_o worship_n to_o be_v give_v to_o any_o as_o be_v give_v to_o god_n and_o all_o because_o there_o be_v none_o like_o to_o he_o in_o the_o excellency_n of_o his_o nature_n and_o in_o the_o way_n of_o communicate_v of_o himself_o unto_o his_o creature_n now_o this_o that_o i_o have_v speak_v be_v exceed_v useful_a in_o the_o whole_a course_n of_o our_o life_n in_o order_v of_o our_o way_n and_o thought_n towards_o god_n consider_v how_o useful_a this_o be_v thus_o it_o shall_v be_v our_o care_n in_o behold_v any_o beauty_n any_o good_a or_o excellency_n in_o the_o creature_n to_o keep_v still_o in_o our_o thought_n and_o heart_n the_o sense_n and_o apprehension_n of_o the_o infinite_a distance_n that_o there_o be_v between_o god_n and_o that_o creature_n the_o want_n of_o this_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o almost_o all_o the_o evil_a that_o there_o be_v in_o the_o world_n and_o the_o true_a apprehension_n of_o this_o be_v a_o special_a mean_n to_o enable_v we_o to_o glorify_v god_n as_o a_o god_n i_o say_v thus_o when_o thou_o behold_v any_o excellency_n beauty_n or_o comeliness_n in_o a_o creature_n and_o taste_v any_o sweetness_n in_o it_o be_v sure_a thou_o do_v then_o keep_v in_o thy_o heart_n the_o sense_n of_o this_o truth_n that_o though_o there_o be_v some_o sweetness_n here_o yet_o god_n be_v infinite_o above_o the_o creature_n and_o there_o be_v a_o infinite_a disproportion_n between_o that_o good_a and_o beauty_n and_o excellency_n that_o be_v in_o these_o creature_n and_o that_o which_o be_v in_o god_n himself_o god_n give_v we_o leave_v to_o let_v out_o our_o heart_n upon_o and_o to_o take_v the_o comfort_n of_o the_o creature_n when_o we_o see_v a_o beauty_n and_o excellency_n in_o it_o and_o that_o because_o it_o be_v his_o similitude_n upon_o the_o creature_n and_o it_o be_v god_n excellency_n that_o be_v there_o and_o a_o spiritual_a heart_n have_v more_o freedom_n to_o let_v out_o itself_o to_o the_o comfort_n of_o the_o creature_n than_o any_o in_o the_o world_n beside_o because_o he_o can_v meet_v with_o and_o taste_n god_n there_o but_o though_o god_n give_v we_o leave_v to_o do_v this_o yet_o evermore_o so_o that_o we_o be_v sure_a to_o reserve_v our_o heart_n to_o god_n to_o be_v sensible_a of_o the_o infinite_a excellency_n that_o be_v in_o god_n above_o any_o creature_n and_o if_o we_o be_v not_o careful_a of_o this_o we_o shall_v soon_o fall_v off_o from_o glorify_v god_n as_o god_n and_o our_o heart_n will_v stick_v in_o the_o creature_n and_o this_o have_v be_v the_o ground_n of_o all_o the_o outward_a idolatry_n and_o spiritual_a idolatry_n in_o the_o world_n of_o outward_a idolatry_n which_o do_v arise_v thus_o man_n at_o first_o see_v some_o excellency_n and_o worth_n in_o the_o creature_n as_o the_o sun_n and_o moon_n and_o star_n they_o do_v acknowledge_v god_n above_o they_o and_o that_o these_o be_v but_o creature_n and_o that_o there_o be_v more_o excellency_n in_o god_n then_o in_o any_o of_o these_o but_o at_o last_o come_v to_o look_v upon_o the_o creature_n too_o much_o and_o be_v take_v with_o the_o excellency_n they_o see_v there_o their_o heart_n stick_v in_o the_o creature_n and_o they_o lose_v the_o apprehension_n of_o the_o infinite_a
christ_n will_v not_o then_o be_v exercise_v in_o the_o work_n of_o his_o mediatorship_n to_o mediate_v any_o further_a for_o those_o for_o who_o he_o do_v not_o mediate_v in_o this_o life_n and_o present_o after_o the_o separation_n of_o the_o soul_n from_o the_o body_n the_o spirit_n of_o god_n whole_o depart_v from_o the_o soul_n and_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n be_v let_v out_o so_o full_o into_o it_o that_o it_o break_v the_o soul_n and_o fill_v up_o every_o faculty_n of_o it_o so_o that_o it_o be_v impossible_a in_o regard_n of_o the_o strong_a current_n of_o divine_a wrath_n that_o carry_v the_o soul_n along_o with_o it_o that_o ever_o it_o shall_v be_v exercise_v to_o all_o eternity_n any_o one_o moment_n in_o any_o thing_n but_o only_o in_o bear_v of_o torment_n and_o divine_a wrath_n as_o the_o saint_n shall_v be_v fill_v up_o with_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n and_o carry_v on_o with_o such_o a_o strong_a current_n of_o divine_a mercy_n that_o it_o shall_v be_v impossible_a that_o their_o soul_n shall_v ever_o to_o all_o eternity_n be_v exercise_v in_o any_o other_o thing_n but_o in_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o god_n and_o live_v to_o his_o praise_n so_o on_o the_o quite_o contrary_a be_v it_o with_o the_o wicked_a therefore_o after_o death_n there_o be_v a_o state_v of_o both_o i_o will_v enlarge_v myself_o no_o further_o in_o the_o open_n of_o this_o point_n but_o come_v present_o to_o apply_v it_o for_o this_o point_n be_v applicatory_a rather_o then_o doctrinal_a and_o i_o shall_v content_v myself_o with_o three_o or_o four_o branch_n of_o application_n and_o so_o conclude_v in_o the_o first_o place_n hence_o we_o may_v see_v what_o cause_n we_o have_v to_o bless_v god_n for_o the_o continuance_n of_o our_o life_n especial_o any_o that_o be_v here_o this_o day_n that_o have_v not_o thorough_o make_v their_o peace_n with_o god_n that_o be_v not_o upon_o certain_a and_o infallible_a term_n in_o this_o great_a business_n of_o provide_v for_o their_o eternal_a estate_n if_o there_o remain_v but_o any_o doubt_n in_o thy_o heart_n concern_v thy_o eternal_a condition_n and_o if_o the_o fear_n of_o eternity_n have_v be_v upon_o thy_o spirit_n thou_o will_v from_o this_o point_n that_o have_v be_v thus_o brief_o speak_v to_o see_v cause_n to_o bless_v god_n with_o thy_o face_n up_o on_o the_o ground_n adore_v the_o riches_n of_o his_o grace_n that_o thou_o be_v alive_a this_o day_n why_o because_o thy_o life_n it_o be_v the_o time_n of_o make_v up_o thy_o peace_n with_o god_n it_o be_v the_o time_n of_o provide_v for_o thy_o eternal_a condition_n if_o thy_o life_n be_v at_o a_o end_n and_o this_o work_v not_o do_v than_o all_o be_v go_v than_o judgement_n come_v and_o thou_o will_v be_v infallible_o and_o unalterable_o state_v in_o a_o lose_a and_o undo_v condition_n o_o therefore_o it_o be_v well_o that_o thou_o be_v alive_a this_o day_n if_o a_o man_n have_v a_o great_a business_n to_o do_v that_o concern_v his_o whole_a estate_n or_o life_n and_o it_o must_v be_v do_v in_o a_o very_a little_a time_n o_o what_o a_o favour_n will_v he_o count_v it_o to_o have_v his_o time_n lengthen_v out_o though_o but_o a_o little_a because_o his_o business_n be_v of_o great_a weight_n and_o he_o think_v with_o himself_o if_o i_o miscarry_v in_o it_o i_o be_o lose_v and_o undo_v for_o ever_o so_o all_o those_o that_o have_v ever_o have_v serious_a apprehension_n of_o the_o infinite_a consequence_n of_o what_o depend_v upon_o their_o life_n here_o they_o can_v but_o sit_v down_o and_o bless_v god_n
