over_o all_o and_o over_o the_o least_o as_o much_o as_o over_o the_o great_a because_o providence_n in_o every_o thing_n be_v so_o much_o the_o more_o perfect_a and_o more_o excellent_a by_o how_o much_o it_o further_o extend_v itself_o and_o take_v care_n of_o more_o thing_n see_v then_o that_o the_o providence_n of_o god_n must_v be_v acknowledge_v the_o most_o perfect_a of_o all_o it_o must_v also_o of_o necessity_n extend_v itself_o to_o all_o thing_n it_o must_v leave_v nothing_o unprovided_a for_o it_o must_v overpasse_v nothing_o we_o observe_v also_o in_o all_o cause_v a_o natural_a and_o vehement_a inclination_n as_o it_o be_v to_o govern_v and_o perfect_v their_o effect_n as_o for_o example_n in_o bruit_n beast_n what_o a_o admirable_a and_o great_a care_n have_v they_o of_o their_o young_a one_o see_v therefore_o that_o whatsoever_o good_a be_v in_o the_o second_o cause_n they_o have_v it_o from_o the_o first_o to_o which_o they_o do_v all_o natural_o desire_n so_o much_o as_o may_v be_v to_o assimilate_v themselves_o it_o be_v manifest_a that_o the_o first_o and_o general_a cause_n of_o all_o thing_n as_o it_o be_v a_o common_a parent_n must_v have_v a_o great_a and_o exact_a care_n over_o all_o particular_a effect_n see_v he_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o all_o beside_o if_o god_n have_v not_o providence_n over_o humane_a affair_n what_o be_v the_o reason_n be_v it_o because_o he_o can_v or_o because_o he_o know_v not_o how_o to_o govern_v they_o or_o last_o because_o he_o will_v not_o none_o of_o these_o can_v be_v imagine_v of_o god_n for_o shall_v we_o think_v of_o god_n that_o he_o can_v or_o know_v not_o how_o to_o execute_v that_o which_o man_n both_o know_v and_o also_o be_v able_a to_o do_v and_o if_o but_o a_o good_a man_n who_o have_v ability_n and_o skill_n to_o order_v affair_n be_v also_o ever_o willing_a of_o his_o own_o part_n to_o do_v it_o shall_v we_o think_v of_o god_n who_o be_v most_o able_a most_o skilful_a and_o wise_a and_o also_o infinite_o good_a that_o he_o shall_v be_v less_o willing_a again_o if_o god_n almighty_n have_v not_o care_n of_o humane_a affair_n why_o have_v he_o give_v man_n such_o a_o natural_a instinct_n and_o inclination_n to_o worship_v he_o god_n and_o nature_n we_o use_v to_o say_v do_v nothing_o in_o vain_a we_o conclude_v therefore_o that_o it_o be_v a_o argument_n only_o of_o madness_n or_o a_o distemper_a mind_n to_o say_v there_o be_v no_o god_n or_o that_o god_n be_v but_o have_v not_o providence_n or_o care_n over_o we_o man_n and_o that_o it_o be_v the_o part_n &_o duty_n of_o a_o wise_a man_n not_o only_o to_o know_v but_o continual_o to_o consider_v that_o there_o be_v a_o governor_n over_o the_o world_n who_o have_v the_o same_o particular_a providence_n over_o man_n that_o he_o have_v over_o other_o natural_a thing_n that_o be_v to_o conduct_v &_o guide_v they_o all_o by_o due_a mean_n unto_o their_o proper_a and_o last_o end_n and_o because_o it_o be_v his_o property_n to_o dispose_v all_o thing_n sweet_o he_o guide_v every_o one_o of_o they_o to_o their_o end_n in_o such_o man_n as_o be_v most_o congruous_a and_o agreeable_a to_o their_o several_a nature_n and_o man_n in_o particular_a free_o according_a to_o that_o liberty_n of_o his_o will_n which_o be_v natural_a to_o he_o from_o whence_o it_o be_v also_o that_o among_o man_n some_o be_v good_a and_o some_o be_v evil_a the_o good_a be_v they_o who_o life_n be_v agreeable_a to_o reason_n conform_v themselves_o to_o such_o illumination_n and_o inspiration_n as_o they_o have_v from_o god_n in_o all_o thing_n study_v and_o endeavour_v to_o please_v he_o the_o evil_a be_v those_o who_o follow_v not_o reason_n nor_o observe_v any_o rectitude_n or_o regularity_n of_o life_n if_o therefore_o the_o divine_a majesty_n have_v providence_n over_o humane_a affair_n and_o be_v just_a as_o he_o be_v he_o must_v certain_o have_v determine_v with_o himself_o both_o to_o reward_v the_o good_a and_o to_o punish_v such_o as_o be_v evil_a but_o this_o we_o see_v not_o do_v at_o least_o not_o exact_o not_o particular_o in_o this_o life_n therefore_o we_o must_v confess_v some_o other_o life_n to_o come_v wherein_o the_o reward_n of_o the_o just_a and_o punishment_n of_o the_o wicked_a shall_v be_v more_o eminent_o see_v which_o if_o it_o be_v so_o how_o much_o do_v it_o concern_v we_o to_o please_v god_n by_o a_o good_a life_n and_o see_v as_o we_o have_v elsewhere_o show_v that_o there_o can_v be_v no_o better_a life_n than_o the_o christian_a life_n be_v it_o be_v to_o no_o purpose_n for_o we_o to_o seek_v any_o where_o else_o how_o to_o live_v or_o how_o to_o please_v god_n for_o a_o life_n so_o lead_v can_v be_v without_o its_o due_a reward_n can_v be_v frustrate_v of_o that_o happiness_n which_o be_v promise_v to_o it_o if_o it_o can_v there_o be_v no_o life_n sure_a of_o happiness_n for_o the_o life_n of_o christian_n in_o many_o respect_n show_v that_o god_n have_v peculiar_a providence_n over_o they_o and_o therefore_o if_o their_o faith_n be_v not_o true_a neither_o can_v their_o life_n so_o much_o be_v govern_v by_o it_o nor_o will_v god_n sufter_o they_o long_o in_o that_o error_n who_o goodness_n it_o be_v to_o illuminate_v those_o which_o be_v good_a and_o right_a of_o heart_n and_o to_o harden_v and_o leave_v in_o blindness_n only_o those_o which_o be_v evil_a if_o therefore_o these_o thing_n be_v so_o let_v we_o believe_v in_o christ_n and_o let_v we_o live_v christianly_o for_o so_o do_v as_o be_v manifest_a by_o what_o have_v be_v say_v we_o can_v perish_v but_o must_v be_v happy_a in_o this_o world_n and_o in_o the_o next_o after_o a_o man_n have_v by_o this_o first_o consideration_n prepare_v himself_o and_o be_v resolve_v to_o do_v what_o he_o can_v to_o attain_v christian_a life_n the_o second_o precept_n to_o be_v give_v he_o be_v this_o viz._n that_o he_o serious_o consider_v what_o that_o thing_n be_v wherein_o christian_a life_n do_v as_o it_o be_v essential_o consist_v which_o be_v the_o grace_n of_o god_n i_o mean_v that_o grace_n which_o as_o we_o touch_v before_o do_v justify_v &_o make_v a_o man_n good_a in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n for_o we_o observe_v some_o man_n as_o soon_o as_o they_o begin_v to_o have_v a_o desire_n of_o live_v christianly_o they_o present_o apply_v themselves_o to_o the_o ceremony_n of_o religion_n and_o perform_v they_o exterior_o they_o imagine_v all_o on_o the_o sudden_a that_o they_o be_v become_v exceed_o good_a christian_n with_o which_o vanity_n many_o deceive_v themselves_o pretend_v to_o be_v christian_n but_o false_o be_v indeed_o a_o foolish_a lukewarm_a yet_o very_o arrogant_a sort_n of_o people_n man_n indeed_o look_v only_o on_o the_o outside_n praise_v what_o they_o see_v but_o god_n behold_v the_o heart_n and_o say_v to_o these_o man_n as_o our_o saviour_n say_v to_o the_o pharisee_n you_o be_v they_o who_o justify_v yourselves_o before_o man_n but_o god_n know_v your_o heart_n for_o many_o time_n that_o which_o be_v of_o high_a esteem_n with_o man_n be_v abomination_n before_o god_n he_o therefore_o that_o desire_v indeed_o to_o live_v christianly_o let_v he_o endeavour_v with_o the_o utmost_a of_o his_o power_n to_o obtain_v the_o grace_n of_o god_n not_o rest_v till_o by_o some_o good_a sign_n &_o argument_n he_o can_v probable_o persuade_v himself_o that_o he_o have_v obtain_v it_o and_o because_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n be_v give_v in_o and_o by_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n to_o all_o those_o who_o devout_o and_o worthy_o come_v unto_o they_o let_v he_o prepare_v himself_o in_o the_o second_o place_n to_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n with_o the_o best_a disposition_n and_o diligence_n he_o can_v in_o particular_a if_o he_o be_v a_o believer_n but_o yet_o not_o baptise_a let_v he_o prepare_v himself_o and_o come_v to_o the_o sacrament_n of_o baptism_n with_o atrue_a sincere_a faith_n and_o good_a intention_n if_o he_o be_v already_o a_o christian_a but_o guilty_a of_o sin_n let_v he_o come_v with_o true_a contrition_n pure_a confession_n and_o perfect_a satissaction_n and_o submit_v himself_o to_o the_o sacrament_n of_o penance_n and_o thereby_o also_o devout_o sit_v himself_o for_o the_o sacrament_n of_o the_o eucharist_n and_o in_o this_o course_n let_v he_o persist_v constant_o until_o by_o some_o good_a conjecture_n he_o find_v that_o he_o may_v have_v obtain_v the_o grace_n of_o god_n now_o the_o best_a of_o that_o sort_n especial_o for_o beginner_n seem_v to_o be_v these_o viz._n if_o he_o find_v in_o himself_o
end_n the_o perfect_a it_o grow_v for_o its_o end_n be_v its_o perfection_n if_o therefore_o blessedness_n consist_v in_o those_o sensitive_a delight_n a_o man_n shall_v become_v so_o much_o the_o more_o perfect_a by_o how_o much_o he_o live_v more_o sensual_o and_o give_v himself_o up_o to_o all_o kind_n of_o luxury_n and_o voluptuousness_n that_o be_v he_o shall_v be_v so_o much_o the_o more_o a_o man_n by_o how_o much_o he_o live_v more_o like_o a_o beast_n which_o be_v very_o absurd_a and_o so_o again_o as_o be_v touch_v in_o the_o precedent_a conclusion_n beast_n also_o will_v be_v find_v capable_a of_o happiness_n as_o well_o as_o man_n yea_o rather_o of_o a_o more_o perfect_a happiness_n then_o man_n for_o as_o much_o as_o they_o have_v no_o fear_n of_o death_n no_o apprehension_n of_o future_a misery_n no_o knowledge_n of_o god_n no_o fear_n of_o judgement_n no_o law_n no_o shame_n no_o repugnance_n of_o flesh_n and_o spirit_n in_o brief_a they_o have_v nothing_o which_o can_v either_o abate_v the_o sense_n or_o restrain_v the_o use_n of_o their_o present_a pleasure_n if_o therefore_o the_o felicity_n of_o man_n do_v consist_v in_o the_o pleasure_n of_o sense_n we_o shall_v all_o desire_n to_o be_v metamorphize_v and_o become_v beast_n why_o because_o beast_n upon_o this_o supposition_n be_v more_o happy_a than_o man_n but_o this_o be_v confess_v to_o be_v absurd_a before_o the_o vii_o conclusion_n that_o the_o happiness_n of_o man_n consist_v in_o such_o good_n as_o pertain_v unto_o the_o intellectual_a or_o superior_a part_n of_o the_o soul_n for_o as_o the_o body_n be_v ordain_v for_o the_o soul_n so_o of_o the_o soul_n the_o vegetative_a or_o low_a part_n be_v ordain_v for_o the_o sensitive_a and_o the_o sensitive_a for_o the_o intellectual_a see_v therefore_o that_o the_o intellect_n or_o rational_a part_n of_o the_o soul_n be_v as_o it_o be_v the_o end_n of_o the_o body_n and_o the_o thing_n whereunto_o both_o it_o and_o also_o the_o inferior_a part_n of_o the_o soul_n be_v subordinate_a and_o direct_v it_o be_v manifest_a that_o in_o the_o act_n or_o exercise_n of_o this_o intellect_n and_o in_o the_o good_n that_o be_v to_o say_v in_o the_o perfection_n thereto_o proper_o belong_v the_o final_a happiness_n of_o man_n do_v consist_v beside_o see_v that_o happiness_n belong_v only_o to_o a_o perfect_a man_n and_o that_o the_o perfection_n of_o man_n as_o man_n consist_v in_o such_o good_n as_o belong_v either_o to_o his_o understanding_n or_o will_n it_o be_v hence_o also_o manifest_a that_o in_o of_o the_o appetite_n of_o man_n as_o man_n be_v good_a in_o its_o latitude_n or_o the_o universal_a good_a for_o we_o find_v that_o as_o the_o understanding_n of_o man_n comprehend_v a_o infinity_n of_o particular_a verity_n that_o be_v to_o say_v it_o never_o comprehend_v actual_o so_o many_o but_o it_o be_v still_o apt_a and_o capable_a to_o comprehend_v more_o successive_o even_o in_o infinitum_fw-la so_o also_o we_o find_v that_o the_o will_n of_o man_n be_v as_o able_a to_o desire_v and_o effect_v a_o infinity_n of_o particular_a good_n that_o be_v to_o say_v that_o it_o also_o never_o actual_o desire_v so_o many_o but_o it_o be_v still_o ready_a to_o accept_v and_o embrace_v more_o whensoever_o offer_v and_o this_o successive_o in_o infinitum_fw-la and_o that_o therefore_o it_o can_v never_o be_v full_o satisfy_v until_o it_o attain_v to_o some_o universal_a or_o infinite_a good_a which_o be_v not_o to_o be_v find_v in_o any_o create_a thing_n for_o the_o goodness_n of_o every_o thing_n create_v be_v at_o best_a but_o derivative_n particular_a and_o finite_a therefore_o in_o no_o create_v good_a can_v the_o felicity_n of_o man_n consist_v the_o ix_o conclusion_n that_o the_o happiness_n of_o man_n consist_v sole_o in_o the_o contemplation_n and_o fruition_n of_o god_n we_o say_v before_o that_o the_o understanding_n of_o man_n rest_v not_o that_o be_v be_v not_o satisfy_v in_o the_o knowledge_n of_o particular_a verity_n nor_o his_o will_n in_o the_o fruition_n of_o particular_a good_n the_o last_o end_n therefore_o of_o they_o both_o must_v be_v truth_n and_o goodness_n universal_a or_o in_o its_o full_a latitude_n which_o god_n only_o be_v therefore_o in_o the_o contemplation_n and_o fruition_n of_o god_n alone_o the_o beatitude_n of_o man_n consist_v beside_o man_n be_v what_o he_o be_v viz._n a_o creature_n natural_o desirous_a to_o know_v and_o that_o our_o knowledge_n of_o every_o particular_a thing_n seem_v then_o to_o be_v complete_a when_o we_o comprehend_v its_o proper_a and_o true_a cause_n hence_o it_o follow_v that_o whensoever_o we_o observe_v any_o thing_n to_o be_v that_o be_v to_o say_v any_o effect_n we_o until_o he_o attain_v perfect_a knowledge_n thereof_o for_o that_o be_v natural_a viz._n for_o every_o thing_n that_o be_v imperfect_a to_o desire_v perfection_n and_o see_v that_o felicity_n as_o we_o have_v say_v be_v the_o perfection_n of_o man_n and_o the_o full_a satisfaction_n of_o his_o intellectual_a appetite_n it_o be_v manifest_a that_o by_o such_o imperfect_a knowledge_n of_o any_o thing_n he_o can_v become_v happy_a but_o if_o he_o know_v the_o thing_n perfect_o suppose_v it_o be_v some_o one_o singular_a or_o many_o yea_o perhaps_o all_o particular_a thing_n that_o be_v yet_o he_o can_v but_o apprehend_v they_o still_o as_o effect_n that_o be_v as_o depend_v in_o their_o very_a being_n upon_o some_o other_o cause_n see_v therefore_o as_o we_o say_v that_o man_n observe_v the_o effect_n do_v natural_o desire_v to_o know_v the_o cause_n it_o be_v manifest_a that_o this_o appetite_n of_o he_o can_v be_v complete_o satisfy_v with_o the_o knowledge_n even_o of_o all_o particular_a thing_n that_o be_v but_o still_o it_o will_v be_v endeavour_v and_o desire_v to_o see_v also_o the_o cause_n of_o they_o all_o and_o that_o so_o much_o the_o more_o earnest_o by_o how_o much_o it_o find_v the_o effect_n themselves_o to_o be_v more_o excellent_a or_o that_o itself_o apprehend_v they_o more_o perfect_o for_o so_o it_o be_v always_o see_v that_o every_o natural_a motion_n the_o nearor_n it_o draw_v to_o its_o period_n or_o proper_a term_n the_o strong_a and_o strong_a it_o grow_v in_o the_o sole_a knowledge_n therefore_o and_o fruition_n of_o god_n who_o be_v the_o universal_a and_o first_o cause_n of_o all_o thing_n do_v man_n blessedness_n consist_v according_a as_o s._n augustine_n have_v excellent_o well_o observe_v thou_o have_v make_v we_o o_o lord_n say_v he_o for_o thyself_o and_o our_o heart_n be_v restless_a and_o unquiet_a until_o it_o find_v its_o repose_n in_o thou_o the_o x._o conclusion_n that_o this_o beatitude_n formal_o and_o as_o it_o or_o in_o that_o ineffable_a pleasure_n and_o delight_n which_o be_v enjoy_v by_o the_o knowledge_n and_o contemplaton_n of_o he_o the_o act_n of_o the_o will_v always_o presuppose_v the_o act_n of_o the_o understanding_n because_o the_o object_n thereof_o be_v always_o some_o know_v or_o imaginary_a good_a see_v therefore_o that_o beatitude_n formal_o and_o in_o its_o own_o nature_n be_v nothing_o else_o but_o the_o attain_n of_o our_o last_o end_n as_o soon_o as_o ever_o a_o man_n attain_v that_o he_o be_v happy_a but_o man_n attain_v his_o last_o end_n which_o be_v god_n so_o soon_o as_o ever_o he_o see_v that_o be_v perfect_o know_v he_o therefore_o in_o the_o knowledge_n and_o by_o the_o knowledge_n of_o his_o last_o end_n man_n become_v essential_o happy_a but_o yet_o because_o this_o knowledge_n or_o contemplation_n of_o the_o divine_a majesty_n be_v inseparable_o accompany_v with_o a_o certain_a infinite_a and_o ineffable_a joy_n or_o pleasure_n conceive_v upon_o that_o
that_o be_v in_o a_o due_a and_o congruous_a subordination_n of_o they_o unto_o superior_a good_n for_o the_o christian_a life_n be_v as_o it_o be_v a_o life_n of_o wisdom_n a_o life_n of_o most_o perfect_a prudence_n and_o discretion_n when_o we_o see_v that_o the_o thing_n which_o the_o world_n so_o much_o admire_v riches_n honour_n pleasure_n etc._n etc._n be_v by_o they_o viz._n good_a christian_n in_o a_o manner_n neglect_v we_o can_v but_o conclude_v that_o they_o find_v themselves_o satisfy_v otherwise_o that_o be_v possess_v of_o riches_n honour_n pleasure_n etc._n etc._n of_o a_o more_o noble_a and_o more_o excellent_a nature_n than_o those_o be_v which_o they_o seem_v to_o despise_v for_o have_v the_o grace_n of_o god_n and_o our_o saviour_n christ_n himself_o dwell_v in_o they_o by_o faith_n they_o conceive_v themselves_o thereby_o in_o possession_n of_o so_o great_a a_o good_a that_o in_o comparison_n thereof_o there_o be_v little_a else_o worthy_a of_o their_o desire_n they_o have_v also_o hereby_o a_o assure_a hope_n to_o recover_v in_o the_o resurrection_n whatsoever_o beauty_n or_o other_o ornament_n of_o the_o body_n here_o they_o may_v seem_v to_o want_v yea_o in_o that_o degree_n of_o excellency_n and_o glory_n which_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n can_v now_o conceive_v and_o to_o enjoy_v with_o christ_n for_o ever_o that_o life_n and_o endless_a be_v present_o satisfy_v with_o but_o a_o small_a provision_n but_o the_o desire_n of_o man_n be_v without_o end_n his_o heart_n be_v restless_a inscrutable_o perverse_a and_o miserable_a with_o all_o last_o beast_n have_v no_o thought_n of_o any_o future_a life_n nor_o of_o the_o immortality_n of_o soul_n about_o which_o man_n be_v extreme_o perplex_v almost_o in_o continual_a dread_n and_o
