and_o prophannesse_n pride_n oppression_n and_o such_o like_a and_o they_o do_v not_o seek_v private_o to_o humble_v themselves_o before_o god_n for_o they_o when_o they_o break_v out_o and_o be_v just_o by_o god_n minister_n reprove_v for_o they_o but_o rather_o they_o go_v on_o obstinate_o and_o stand_v in_o the_o defence_n of_o the_o same_o they_o do_v not_o i_o say_v after_o some_o extraordinary_a manner_n of_o fast_v and_o prayer_n seek_v fervent_o unto_o the_o lord_n and_o so_o his_o judgement_n break_v out_o against_o they_o and_o some_o plague_n or_o other_o enter_v into_o their_o house_n which_o with_o their_o sin_n they_o have_v defile_v that_o as_o the_o canaanite_n be_v spew_v out_o of_o that_o fruitful_a land_n for_o their_o wickedness_n 18.28_o leu._n 18.28_o so_o be_v they_o by_o sickness_n and_o death_n cast_v out_o of_o their_o goodly_a house_n which_o kind_n of_o wickedness_n commit_v close_o in_o house_n as_o it_o be_v the_o principal_a cause_n that_o this_o late_a plague_n first_o enter_v into_o they_o so_o in_o that_o respect_n some_o have_v just_a cause_n to_o begin_v soon_o an_o to_o continue_v long_o their_o private_a fast_n then_o by_o and_o may_v further_o learn_v out_o of_o many_o other_o place_n of_o scripture_n beside_o as_o 50.15_o psal_n 50.15_o call_v upon_o i_o in_o the_o time_n of_o thy_o trouble_n and_o i_o will_v hear_v thou_o and_o deliver_v thou_o and_o many_o other_o but_o he_o have_v set_v down_o no_o time_n when_o we_o shall_v see_v and_o perceive_v that_o he_o have_v hear_v we_o save_v that_o it_o be_v say_v i_o will_v hear_v thou_o in_o due_a time_n 10.1_o psal_n 10.1_o even_o in_o affliction_n now_o which_o be_v the_o most_o convenient_a time_n for_o god_n to_o help_v we_o in_o 1.7_o act._n 1.7_o that_o we_o the_o more_o fit_a for_o prayer_n but_o when_o the_o body_n be_v pinch_v with_o hunger_n and_o the_o want_n of_o other_o necessary_a help_n meet_v for_o it_o the_o feel_n of_o our_o want_n shall_v be_v a_o mean_n to_o set_v a_o sharp_a edge_n upon_o our_o prayer_n to_o make_v they_o more_o pierce_v and_o as_o it_o be_v to_o give_v a_o wing_n unto_o they_o to_o fly_v aloft_o above_o make_v no_o difference_n or_o choice_n of_o time_n but_o without_o all_o discretion_n appoint_v the_o time_n of_o lent_n and_o all_o ember_n week_n as_o they_o call_v they_o and_o every_o saint_n eeven_a yearly_a to_o be_v fast_v let_v the_o time_n be_v then_o as_o they_o will_v be_v not_o consider_v whether_o the_o time_n be_v or_o shall_v be_v a_o time_n of_o joy_n or_o sorrow_n of_o weep_v or_o of_o rejoice_v as_o a_o time_n of_o peace_n or_o of_o war_n a_o time_n of_o sickness_n or_o of_o health_n a_o time_n of_o dearth_n or_o of_o plenty_n or_o general_o a_o time_n of_o prosperity_n or_o of_o adversity_n &_o this_o they_o do_v not_o for_o civil_a policy_n as_o we_o keep_v they_o but_o of_o mere_a consciene_n injoin_v all_o man_n under_o the_o pain_n of_o sin_n and_o fearful_a may_v remember_v what_o be_v write_v concern_v fast_v in_o the_o book_n of_o leviticus_fw-la and_o namely_o how_o there_o it_o be_v say_v that_o the_o lord_n command_v the_o jew_n once_o a_o year_n that_o every_o soul_n shall_v humble_v itself_o with_o fast_v before_o the_o lord_n in_o one_o of_o the_o great_a assembly_n where_o moses_n show_v or_o rather_o the_o lord_n by_o he_o that_o this_o fast_n shall_v be_v keep_v perpetual_o once_o a_o year_n and_o in_o what_o month_n and_o what_o day_n of_o the_o month_n and_o to_o what_o end_n namely_o to_o humble_v themselves_o for_o their_o sin_n and_o therefore_o what_o must_v then_o be_v do_v viz._n that_o they_o must_v abstain_v from_o all_o work_n and_o worldly_a business_n and_o be_v occupy_v in_o all_o exercise_n of_o god_n worship_n as_o upon_o the_o sabbath_n day_n and_o that_o the_o priest_n shall_v make_v atonement_n by_o prayer_n to_o obtain_v remission_n of_o their_o sin_n and_o the_o same_o commandment_n be_v set_v down_o again_o in_o as_o many_o word_n in_o the_o 23._o 23.2_o leu._n 23.2_o chapter_n of_o the_o same_o book_n where_o he_o show_v that_o all_o be_v bind_v to_o it_o and_o that_o they_o shall_v then_o lay_v their_o labour_n and_o in_o these_o place_n though_o there_o be_v no_o mention_n of_o abstain_v from_o meat_n and_o drink_v and_o so_o they_o may_v seem_v not_o to_o appertain_v to_o this_o argument_n of_o fast_v yet_o beside_o that_o all_o learned_a man_n do_v thus_o take_v they_o that_o this_o be_v a_o day_n of_o yearly_a fast_n even_o the_o very_a circumstance_n also_o of_o the_o text_n do_v necessary_o lead_v we_o unto_o this_o interpretation_n for_o when_o he_o not_o only_o make_v it_o a_o day_n of_o abstain_v from_o all_o work_n and_o spend_v it_o whole_o in_o god_n service_n public_o but_o also_o that_o the_o end_n of_o it_o shall_v be_v that_o they_o may_v be_v humble_v for_o their_o sin_n &_o so_o reconcile_v unto_o god_n &_o this_o humble_v of_o their_o soul_n be_v principal_o urge_v and_o we_o know_v that_o the_o humble_v of_o the_o body_n be_v a_o mean_n to_o humble_a the_o soul_n and_o the_o body_n be_v special_o humble_v and_o bring_v down_o by_o abstain_v from_o meat_n and_o drink_v and_o other_o comfort_n of_o it_o and_o beside_o we_o find_v by_o practice_n in_o the_o scripture_n that_o in_o other_o time_n of_o great_a humiliation_n the_o servant_n of_o god_n have_v abstain_v from_o these_o thing_n therefore_o we_o may_v be_v assure_v that_o this_o be_v mean_v in_o these_o place_n and_o that_o this_o be_v their_o practice_n that_o upon_o this_o day_n they_o abstain_v from_o meat_n and_o drink_n do_v thus_o also_o cease_v from_o work_n and_o be_v occupy_v in_o god_n worship_n to_o this_o end_n even_o to_o the_o humble_v of_o themselves_o before_o the_o lord_n and_o so_o this_o be_v the_o thing_n that_o be_v command_v they_o yearly_o to_o do_v even_o to_o keep_v a_o day_n of_o fast_o and_o there_o be_v great_a reason_n of_o it_o it_o there_o be_v great_a reasâ—_n of_o it_o for_o in_o the_o year_n many_o great_a sin_n may_v be_v commit_v of_o all_o sort_n which_o may_v just_o provoke_v god_n wrath_n against_o they_o and_o so_o they_o have_v great_a cause_n to_o be_v humble_v for_o they_o and_o once_o in_o the_o year_n god_n may_v show_v some_o token_n of_o his_o displeasure_n in_o some_o of_o his_o punishment_n as_o by_o raise_v up_o some_o enemy_n against_o they_o by_o send_v sickness_n scarcity_n unseasonable_a weather_n and_o such_o like_a therefore_o they_o may_v think_v that_o once_o in_o the_o year_n at_o the_o least_o there_o be_v cause_n for_o they_o thus_o to_o humble_v themselves_o especial_o when_o god_n have_v command_v they_o so_o to_o do_v for_o though_o they_o shall_v thus_o humble_v themselves_o continual_o for_o their_o sin_n as_o they_o sell_v out_o yet_o to_o help_v their_o infirmity_n â—hey_n have_v a_o set_a time_n appoint_v for_o it_o 〈◊〉_d do_v it_o more_o thorough_o for_o as_o theâ—_n have_v a_o solemn_a day_n appoint_v for_o this_o purpose_n that_o the_o time_n itself_o may_v not_o only_o put_v they_o in_o mind_n of_o that_o which_o otherwise_o will_v have_v be_v forget_v of_o the_o most_o or_o not_o so_o serious_o think_v upon_o but_o also_o further_o they_o therein_o and_o as_o we_o find_v by_o experience_n how_o needful_a it_o be_v to_o have_v a_o sabbath_n to_o put_v we_o in_o mind_n of_o and_z to_z further_o we_o in_o god_n service_n for_o how_o few_o do_v it_o at_o all_o or_o as_o they_o shall_v upon_o the_o week_n day_n and_o then_o what_o will_v they_o do_v if_o there_o be_v no_o sabbath_n at_o all_o so_o the_o godly_a no_o doubt_n in_o those_o day_n do_v find_v by_o their_o own_o experience_n that_o though_o they_o have_v oftentimes_o cause_n in_o respect_n of_o their_o sin_n and_o the_o punishment_n of_o they_o to_o fast_v public_o and_o private_o yet_o if_o they_o have_v have_v no_o set_a time_n appoint_v for_o it_o they_o shall_v very_o often_o have_v fail_v in_o so_o necessary_a a_o duty_n even_o as_o we_o see_v among_o ourselves_o that_o because_o we_o have_v no_o such_o time_n appoint_v for_o we_o that_o very_o few_o though_o they_o have_v great_a cause_n do_v practice_v it_o at_o any_o time_n therefore_o this_o be_v god_n goodness_n to_o that_o people_n to_o give_v they_o such_o a_o commandment_n us._n how_o far_o he_o we_o be_v contagious_a and_o so_o may_v easy_o spread_v even_o unto_o we_o quick_o by_o they_o that_o come_v from_o the_o place_n infect_v as_o thus_o it_o have_v come_v to_o many_o place_n a_o far_o off_o already_o therefore_o in_o respect_n of_o all_o these_o we_o be_v bind_v by_o god_n law_n to_o give_v ourselves_o to_o fast_v and_o prayer_n as_o well_o as_o the_o jew_n be_v though_o we_o be_v not_o tie_v to_o that_o month_n and_o to_o that_o day_n still_o â—ugh_o the_o â—moniall_a 〈◊〉_d of_o the_o â—es_v fast_o â—brogaâ—_n yet_o faâ—g_v remaiâ—_n still_o for_o even_o as_o though_o the_o jewish_a sabbath_n be_v take_v away_o which_o be_v upon_o the_o saturday_n yet_o whether_o we_o consider_v the_o end_n of_o fast_v or_o of_o sanctify_v a_o day_n of_o rest_n we_o be_v still_o bind_v to_o keep_v one_o in_o seven_o and_o this_o one_o that_o we_o do_v and_o we_o have_v as_o much_o need_n of_o it_o as_o the_o jew_n have_v so_o we_o may_v say_v of_o the_o day_n of_o fast_v though_o that_o prescript_n day_n be_v take_v away_o yet_o if_o we_o consider_v the_o end_n and_o cause_n of_o it_o namely_o to_o humble_v we_o for_o our_o sin_n we_o be_v bind_v to_o it_o still_o upon_o some_o day_n and_o have_v as_o much_o need_n of_o it_o as_o ever_o they_o have_v therefore_o we_o must_v be_v persuade_v that_o now_o god_n do_v require_v it_o of_o we_o and_o not_o only_o the_o king_n and_o so_o let_v we_o do_v it_o in_o obedience_n unto_o he_o principal_o and_o conscience_n of_o our_o duty_n thus_o we_o see_v also_o what_o we_o ought_v to_o have_v do_v and_o what_o god_n require_v of_o we_o often_o heretofore_o though_o we_o have_v neglect_v it_o when_o we_o have_v see_v sin_n abound_v threaten_v god_n judgement_n yea_o when_o we_o have_v see_v and_o feel_v his_o and_o such_o like_a which_o if_o we_o have_v use_v more_o as_o we_o have_v occasion_n and_o the_o time_n call_v we_o unto_o it_o we_o may_v have_v look_v for_o great_a blessing_n and_o many_o punishment_n have_v not_o lie_v so_o loâ—g_v upon_o the_o people_n but_o that_o that_o we_o haâ—e_v fail_v in_o before_o let_v we_o now_o make_v a_o supply_n of_o and_o to_o that_o end_n let_v we_o far_o consider_v what_o proof_n we_o have_v more_o that_o god_n require_v it_o of_o us._n if_o this_o yearly_a day_n upon_o these_o ground_n that_o we_o have_v hear_v be_v not_o sufficient_a to_o bind_v we_o then_o let_v we_o remember_v that_o beside_o it_o they_o have_v other_o mooveable_a &_o uncertain_a fast_n occasion_n the_o jew_n have_v other_o mooveable_a fast_n upon_o sundry_a occasion_n which_o be_v hold_v at_o diverse_a time_n upon_o sundry_a occasion_n that_o we_o see_v how_o we_o have_v the_o like_a occasion_n among_o we_o may_v know_v that_o we_o haâ—e_v the_o like_a commandment_n from_o god_n to_o do_v as_o they_o do_v and_o so_o shall_v fall_v into_o the_o like_a practice_n and_o not_o to_o think_v it_o to_o be_v a_o thing_n command_v only_o by_o man_n and_o so_o indifferent_a and_o therefore_o that_o a_o man_n may_v choose_v whether_o he_o will_v use_v it_o or_o leave_v it_o to_o this_o end_n consider_v what_o be_v write_v by_o the_o prophet_n joel_n whole_o rest_v from_o all_o the_o work_n of_o their_o ordinary_a call_n from_o evening_n to_o evening_n and_o must_v spend_v that_o time_n in_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n they_o can_v not_o at_o father_n with_o a_o angry_a countenance_n come_v towards_o he_o with_o the_o rod_n in_o his_o hand_n so_o they_o have_v not_o tarry_v till_o they_o have_v feel_v the_o smart_n of_o god_n correction_n upon_o themselves_o but_o the_o very_a show_n of_o his_o wrath_n come_v against_o they_o have_v be_v sufficient_a to_o move_v they_o to_o humble_v themselves_o before_o he_o and_o to_o crave_v his_o pardon_n in_o which_o respect_n also_o beside_o that_o that_o we_o speak_v of_o before_o we_o must_v needs_o confess_v that_o we_o have_v great_a cause_n to_o fast_o and_o pray_v public_o for_o beside_o that_o great_a wrath_n of_o god_n that_o have_v be_v a_o long_a time_n upon_o our_o brethren_n fast_n in_o respect_n of_o god_n wrath_n likely_a yet_o further_o to_o come_v upon_o uâ—_n to_o eat_v and_o to_o drink_v even_o as_o a_o arrow_n do_v often_o hurt_v by_o glance_v at_o a_o thing_n beside_o the_o place_n where_o it_o light_v moreover_o such_o be_v the_o nature_n of_o this_o disease_n that_o we_o may_v get_v hurt_v not_o only_o by_o man_n live_v and_o die_v but_o even_o by_o other_o creature_n which_o shall_v go_v to_o or_o come_v from_o such_o place_n as_o be_v infect_v as_o cat_n &_o dog_n most_o of_o all_o and_o therefore_o in_o time_n of_o common_a plague_n there_o be_v order_n take_v in_o all_o city_n or_o town_n corporate_a which_o be_v well_o govern_v to_o kill_v up_o all_o dog_n that_o be_v not_o shut_v up_o but_o run_v abroad_o of_o what_o nature_n or_o kind_n or_o quality_n or_o price_n soever_o they_o be_v least_o by_o come_v into_o man_n company_n they_o shall_v spread_v abroad_o the_o infection_n and_o we_o read_v that_o some_o only_a but_o buy_v a_o dog_n skin_n in_o the_o market_n and_o bring-in_a it_o home_n they_o have_v bring_v the_o pestilence_n into_o their_o house_n to_o the_o overthrow_n and_o destruction_n of_o the_o whole_a family_n see_v then_o that_o it_o be_v &_o have_v be_v a_o long_a time_n in_o so_o many_o place_n there_o be_v no_o place_n so_o far_o off_o from_o it_o or_o so_o free_a but_o have_v just_a cause_n to_o fear_v it_o more_o or_o less_o come_v and_o therefore_o there_o be_v no_o place_n so_o clear_a whether_o it_o may_v not_o speedy_o come_v because_o there_o be_v so_o many_o open_a and_o secret_a way_n to_o bring_v it_o and_o so_o in_o the_o ordinary_a course_n of_o god_n providence_n all_o that_o have_v wisdom_n may_v think_v it_o likely_a to_o come_v upon_o they_o in_o this_o time_n if_o the_o lord_n be_v not_o merciful_a unto_o they_o therefore_o in_o respect_n of_o god_n wrath_n manifest_o appear_v in_o this_o grievous_a pestilence_n though_o not_o yet_o upon_o we_o through_o the_o infinite_a goodness_n and_o mercy_n of_o god_n yet_o just_o to_o be_v fear_v as_o we_o have_v providence_n as_o a_o sufficient_a cause_n of_o public_a fast_n homil_n ix_o the_o nine_o homily_n continue_v to_o show_v the_o cause_n of_o public_a fast_n namely_o when_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n to_o come_v have_v be_v just_o fear_v in_o respect_n of_o the_o great_a sin_n that_o have_v abound_v and_o of_o the_o judgement_n of_o god_n denounce_v against_o the_o same_o open_o by_o the_o minister_n of_o god_n and_o when_o god_n wrath_n have_v not_o only_o be_v upon_o themselves_o but_o upon_o other_o of_o their_o brethren_n the_o child_n of_o god_n the_o last_o day_n we_o enter_v into_o this_o treatise_n of_o the_o consideration_n of_o the_o cause_n of_o public_a fasting_n have_v hitherto_o proceed_v thus_o far_o to_o show_v that_o the_o servant_n of_o god_n have_v be_v move_v thereunto_o not_o only_a when_o some_o great_a punishment_n as_o a_o testimony_n of_o god_n displeasure_n have_v be_v upon_o they_o fast_n the_o wrath_n of_o god_n to_o come_v consider_v in_o sin_n that_o have_v abound_v have_v be_v cause_n of_o public_a fast_n but_o when_o in_o the_o course_n of_o nature_n or_o of_o ordinary_a mean_n to_o serve_v god_n providence_n by_o there_o have_v be_v some_o likelihood_n of_o it_o it_o remain_v that_o i_o shall_v proceed_v therefore_o secondary_o they_o have_v consider_v of_o god_n displeasure_n likely_a to_o come_v upon_o they_o by_o see_v and_o observe_v diligent_o the_o manifold_a great_a sin_n and_o notorious_a offence_n which_o in_o their_o time_n have_v be_v commit_v for_o which_o they_o true_o judge_v and_o fear_v that_o god_n must_v from_o the_o constant_a truth_n of_o god_n threaten_n reveal_v in_o his_o holy_a law_n and_o from_o the_o continual_a execution_n of_o the_o same_o upon_o other_o from_o time_n to_o time_n see_v then_o that_o the_o lord_n be_v just_a and_o true_a and_o that_o he_o have_v threaten_v to_o punish_v sin_n so_o and_o so_o as_o be_v large_o set_v down_o in_o the_o law_n and_o the_o prophet_n their_o life_n by_o reason_n of_o this_o great_a plague_n 91.5_o psal_n 91.5_o which_o as_o a_o arrow_n fly_v by_o day_n and_o walk_v in_o the_o darkness_n and_o destroy_v at_o noon_n day_n so_o that_o neither_o day_n nor_o night_n they_o be_v in_o safety_n or_o without_o fear_n and_o be_v as_o deadly_a as_o the_o sword_n for_o it_o cause_v a_o thousand_o to_o fall_v on_o the_o one_o side_n and_o ten_o thousand_o on_o the_o other_o and_o so_o they_o have_v many_o fearful_a day_n and_o take_v little_a rest_n in_o the_o night_n neither_o can_v they_o eat_v their_o meat_n quiet_o or_o with_o any_o comfort_n so_o that_o unless_o we_o will_v be_v addict_v and_o live_v whole_o to_o ourselves_o and_o care_n for_o none_o other_o this_o great_a wrath_n upon_o our_o brethren_n so_o long_o and_o so_o heavy_a shall_v drive_v we_o to_o weep_v with_o they_o to_o fast_o and_o pray_v for_o they_o and_o see_v they_o be_v so_o great_o humble_v in_o themselves_o we_o shall_v some_o way_n cast_v down_o ourselves_o with_o they_o therefore_o let_v we_o set_v their_o lamentable_a estate_n estate_n to_o that_o end_n we_o shall_v serious_o think_v of_o their_o lamentable_a estate_n before_o our_o eye_n and_o let_v it_o be_v a_o look_a glass_n unto_o we_o let_v we_o in_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n think_v of_o it_o serious_o and_o in_o good_a earnest_n as_o if_o it_o be_v our_o own_o case_n that_o dead_a and_o rot_a member_n or_o rather_o clean_o cut_v off_o from_o the_o body_n that_o we_o shall_v daily_o hear_v of_o many_o thousand_o of_o our_o brethren_n &_o sister_n in_o christ_n to_o be_v in_o so_o great_a heaviness_n and_o sorrow_n for_o themselves_o and_o for_o their_o friend_n and_o not_o to_o be_v move_v with_o it_o and_o yet_o count_v our_o soul_n member_n of_o that_o body_n when_o we_o shall_v have_v little_a or_o no_o feel_n at_o all_o of_o their_o estate_n that_o part_n of_o the_o body_n be_v dead_a that_o be_v without_o feeling_n not_o only_o of_o it_o own_o self_n
