inquire_v a_o little_a into_o the_o reason_n and_o cause_n why_o this_o pravity_n of_o sin_n and_o discrepancy_n from_o the_o holiness_n of_o god_n be_v such_o a_o defilement_n of_o our_o nature_n be_v blind_a and_o obdurate_a it_o fill_v they_o with_o shame_n i_o speak_v not_o of_o such_o as_o be_v little_a or_o not_o at_o all_o spiritual_o sensible_a of_o sin_n or_o any_o of_o its_o propertye_n who_o fear_v not_o because_o of_o its_o gild_n nor_o be_v disquiet_v by_o its_o power_n not_o acquaint_v with_o its_o foam_n or_o disposition_n to_o evil_n and_o so_o not_o ashamed_a of_o its_o filth_n much_o less_o of_o such_o as_o be_v give_v over_o to_o all_o uncleanness_n with_o delight_n and_o greediness_n wallow_v in_o the_o pollution_n of_o it_o like_o the_o sow_n in_o the_o mire_n who_o not_o only_o do_v the_o thing_n which_o god_n abhor_v but_o also_o have_v pleasure_n in_o they_o that_o do_v they_o but_o those_o i_o intend_v who_o have_v the_o least_o real_a conviction_n of_o the_o nature_n and_o tendency_n of_o sin_n who_o be_v all_o in_o one_o degree_n or_o other_o ashamed_a of_o it_o as_o a_o filthy_a thing_n and_o a_o cast_v off_o of_o outward_a shame_n that_o be_v so_o from_o its_o object_n or_o shame_n with_o respect_n unto_o the_o conscience_n and_o judgement_n of_o humane_a kind_a as_o those_o do_v who_o proclaim_v their_o sin_n as_o their_o own_o sorrow_n and_o repentance_n and_o tear_n of_o contrition_n and_o that_o sorry_a amendment_n of_o life_n they_o can_v attain_v unto_o shall_v do_v this_o work_n for_o they_o and_o every_o especial_a defile_n act_n or_o every_o renew_a sense_n of_o it_o shall_v have_v a_o especial_a act_n of_o duty_n for_o its_o cleanse_n but_o though_o these_o thing_n be_v good_a in_o themselves_o yet_o there_o be_v require_v more_o wisdom_n to_o the_o right_n state_v of_o they_o as_o to_o their_o cause_n respect_n end_n and_o use_v than_o they_o be_v furnish_v withal_o hence_o be_v they_o so_o frequent_o abuse_v and_o turn_v into_o a_o effectual_a mean_v not_o only_o of_o keep_v man_n off_o and_o at_o a_o distance_n from_o christ_n but_o also_o from_o a_o due_a and_o acceptable_a performance_n of_o the_o very_a duty_n themselves_o pretend_v unto_o for_o legal_a sorrow_n or_o repentance_n or_o mere_a legal_a conviction_n be_v trust_v unto_o will_v infallible_o keep_v the_o soul_n from_o come_v up_o unto_o that_o evangelical_n repentance_n which_o alone_o god_n accept_v and_o mere_a reformation_n of_o life_n rest_v in_o prove_v opposite_a to_o endeavour_n for_o the_o renovation_n of_o our_o nature_n but_o let_v these_o duty_n be_v perform_v however_o in_o what_o manner_n you_o please_v they_o be_v utter_o insufficient_a of_o themselves_o to_o cleanse_v our_o natural_a defilement_n nor_o will_v any_o seek_v due_o for_o that_o which_o alone_o be_v effectual_a unto_o this_o purpose_n until_o they_o be_v full_o convince_v hereof_o let_v therefore_o sinner_n hear_v and_o know_v whether_o they_o will_v or_o will_v not_o believe_v it_o that_o as_o by_o nature_n they_o be_v whole_o desile_v and_o pollute_v with_o those_o abomination_n of_o sin_n which_o render_v they_o loathsome_a in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n so_o they_o have_v no_o power_n by_o any_o endeavour_n or_o duty_n of_o their_o own_o to_o cleanse_v themselves_o but_o by_o all_o they_o do_v to_o this_o end_n they_o do_v but_o far_o plunge_v themselves_o into_o the_o ditch_n and_o increase_v their_o own_o defilement_n yet_o be_v all_o those_o duty_n necessary_a in_o their_o proper_a dark_a unbelieving_a and_o superstitious_a mind_n and_o in_o like_a manner_n when_o he_o design_v to_o draw_v man_n off_o from_o christ_n and_o the_o gospel_n under_o the_o papacy_n he_o do_v it_o principal_o by_o the_o suggestion_n of_o such_o present_a and_o future_a purgatory_n of_o sin_n as_o may_v comply_v with_o their_o lust_n and_o ignorance_n of_o so_o great_a importance_n be_v it_o therefore_o to_o be_v acquaint_v with_o the_o only_a true_a real_a way_n and_o means_n hereof_o and_o there_o be_v two_o consideration_n that_o be_v suit_v to_o excite_v the_o diligence_n of_o much_o hide_v from_o the_o eye_n of_o all_o live_a man_n the_o sense_n of_o what_o the_o scripture_n propose_v what_o i_o believe_v and_o what_o i_o desire_v a_o experience_n of_o that_o i_o shall_v endeavour_v to_o declare_v but_o as_o we_o be_v not_o in_o this_o life_n perfect_a in_o the_o duty_n of_o holiness_n no_o more_o be_v we_o in_o the_o knowledge_n of_o its_o nature_n first_o
