if_o you_o be_v much_o discourage_v it_o be_v our_o duty_n to_o behold_v thing_n as_o god_n present_v they_o and_o to_o take_v thing_n as_o god_n do_v give_v they_o what_o god_n have_v join_v together_o no_o man_n may_v put_v asunder_o if_o you_o consider_v the_o sweetness_n of_o a_o object_n or_o condition_n without_o the_o sowrness_n of_o it_o than_o you_o may_v grow_v too_o wanton_a if_o you_o consider_v the_o terror_n of_o a_o object_n or_o condition_n without_o the_o sweetness_n of_o it_o than_o you_o may_v be_v too_o fearful_a but_o if_o you_o think_v on_o both_o together_o than_o you_o will_v fear_v and_o believe_v and_o believe_v and_o fear_v and_o so_o be_v keep_v from_o discouragement_n five_o if_o you_o will_v not_o be_v discourage_v whatever_o your_o condition_n be_v labour_n more_o and_o more_o to_o get_v your_o self-love_n mortify_v even_o religious_a self-love_n all_o your_o dscouragement_n be_v from_o self-love_n not_o from_o the_o venom_n of_o your_o condition_n but_o from_o the_o poison_n of_o self-love_n o_o but_o i_o be_o discourage_v because_o i_o have_v no_o assurance_n well_o but_o suppose_v you_o have_v assurance_n what_o then_o then_o i_o shall_v have_v comfort_n and_o be_v not_o here self_o o_o but_o i_o be_o discourage_v about_o my_o everlasting_a condition_n and_o be_v not_o that_o self_n do_v not_o that_o word_n condition_n sound_v one_o self_n i_o dare_v bold_o say_v there_o be_v no_o tumult_n or_o immoderate_a discouragement_n in_o the_o soul_n but_o have_v self_n at_o the_o bottom_n can_v i_o leave_v myself_o and_o my_o condition_n with_o god_n and_o christ_n and_o mind_n his_o service_n glory_n and_o honour_n more_o god_n will_v take_v care_n of_o my_o comfort_n but_o when_o i_o mind_v myself_o and_o my_o condition_n so_o much_o and_o his_o service_n glory_n and_o honour_n so_o little_a no_o wonder_n that_o i_o be_o so_o much_o discourage_v therefore_o labour_n more_o and_o more_o to_o mortify_v self-love_n and_o so_o shall_v you_o never_o be_v discourage_v whatever_o your_o condition_n be_v six_o in_o case_n that_o temptation_n press_v in_o upon_o you_o and_o urge_v you_o to_o sad_a discouragement_n speak_v to_o this_o purpose_n unto_o your_o own_o soul_n why_o shall_v i_o buy_v my_o repentance_n at_o so_o dear_a a_o rate_n there_o be_v none_o of_o all_o these_o doubt_n unbelieved_a fear_n and_o discouragement_n but_o you_o will_v be_v ashamed_a and_o repent_v of_o afterward_o you_o know_v how_o it_o be_v with_o the_o traveller_n he_o think_v the_o sun_n be_v not_o when_o christ_n be_v satisfy_v in_o the_o redemption_n of_o man_n from_o their_o iniquity_n and_o vain_a conversation_n the_o conversion_n of_o a_o sinner_n be_v the_o fruit_n of_o christ_n travel_n wherein_o he_o rejoice_v and_o be_v delight_v with_o a_o great_a delight_n and_o do_v it_o grieve_v you_o to_o see_v a_o sinner_n turn_v from_o the_o evil_n of_o his_o way_n take_v heed_n how_o you_o why_o shall_v you_o not_o be_v content_v and_o satisfy_v with_o christ_n alone_o all_o his_o delight_n be_v in_o you_o why_o shall_v not_o all_o your_o delight_n be_v in_o he_o be_v he_o satisfy_v in_o you_o why_o then_o shall_v not_o you_o be_v satisfy_v with_o he_o and_o with_o that_o condition_n which_o he_o carve_v for_o you_o through_o he_o the_o father_n be_v satisfy_v for_o your_o sin_n and_o in_o time_n of_o presumption_n to_o look_v upon_o he_o as_o our_o example_n to_o trust_v in_o christ_n as_o if_o we_o have_v no_o work_n and_o yet_o to_o work_v as_o if_o we_o have_v no_o christ_n i_o mean_v for_o a_o man_n to_o be_v so_o obedient_a to_o the_o commandment_n as_o if_o he_o will_v be_v save_v by_o the_o law_n and_o yet_o to_o rest_v on_o the_o promise_n as_o if_o he_o will_v be_v save_v by_o grace_n and_o in_o all_o our_o service_n to_o god_n in_o christ_n to_o walk_v by_o a_o law_n without_o we_o and_o yet_o by_o a_o law_n within_o we_o by_o a_o law_n without_o we_o as_o our_o rule_n and_o by_o a_o law_n within_o we_o as_o our_o principle_n these_o be_v excellent_a thing_n in_o regard_n of_o christ_n and_o his_o service_n as_o for_o the_o ordinance_n and_o mean_n of_o grace_n it_o be_v a_o excellent_a thing_n so_o to_o use_v the_o public_a ordinance_n as_o we_o may_v be_v more_o fit_a for_o private_a exercise_n and_o so_o to_o use_v our_o private_a exercise_n as_o we_o may_v be_v the_o more_o fit_a for_o public_a ordinance_n to_o wait_v upon_o god_n in_o the_o use_n of_o all_o mean_n yet_o not_o to_o tie_v the_o working_n of_o the_o spirit_n unto_o any_o one_o particular_a to_o observe_v what_o that_o ordinance_n be_v that_o be_v most_o decry_v and_o despise_v by_o the_o world_n and_o to_o advance_v and_o honour_v that_o to_o worship_n christ_n in_o a_o manger_n these_o be_v excellent_a thing_n in_o regard_n of_o the_o ordinance_n and_o mean_n of_o grace_n as_o for_o your_o grace_n gift_n and_o comfort_n a_o excellent_a thing_n it_o be_v for_o a_o man_n so_o to_o exercise_v one_o grace_n as_o he_o may_v be_v fit_a for_o another_o so_o to_o exercise_v his_o faith_n as_o he_o may_v be_v fit_a for_o repentance_n and_o so_o to_o exercise_v his_o repentance_n as_o he_o may_v grow_v up_o into_o more_o assurance_n to_o make_v all_o your_o grace_n parent_n to_o your_o comfort_n and_o your_o comfort_n handmaid_n to_o your_o grace_n that_o your_o gift_n may_v beautify_v your_o grace_n and_o your_o grace_n sanctify_v your_o gift_n to_o be_v of_o high_a part_n and_o a_o low_a spirit_n to_o know_v much_o and_o yet_o to_o love_v respect_n and_o honour_v those_o that_o know_v less_o these_o be_v excellent_a thing_n in_o regard_n of_o our_o gift_n grace_n and_o comfort_n as_o for_o your_o condition_n it_o be_v a_o excellent_a thing_n for_o a_o man_n to_o be_v thankful_a for_o his_o present_a condition_n and_o yet_o not_o to_o be_v in_o love_n therewith_o nor_o to_o live_v thereon_o it_o be_v ill_a to_o murmur_v a_o man_n so_o to_o use_v his_o particular_a call_v as_o he_o may_v be_v fit_a for_o his_o general_n and_o so_o to_o use_v his_o general_n as_o he_o may_v be_v fit_a for_o his_o particular_a to_o make_v your_o sail_n fit_a for_o your_o
your_o own_o condition_n and_o pitch_n upon_o sin_n as_o a_o breach_n of_o god_n law_n a_o transgression_n of_o the_o law_n of_o god_n a_o dishonour_n do_v to_o god_n and_o as_o a_o breach_n of_o the_o law_n of_o love_n between_o christ_n and_o you_o thus_o i_o say_v if_o you_o will_v be_v humble_v and_o not_o discourage_v rather_o mourn_v over_o your_o condition_n in_o order_n to_o your_o sin_n than_o for_o your_o sin_n in_o order_n to_o your_o condition_n answ_n 4_o four_o in_o your_o humiliation_n take_v heed_n that_o you_o do_v not_o meddle_v too_o much_o with_o god_n prerogative_n and_o with_o god_n peculiar_a in_o humiliation_n a_o man_n be_v to_o meddle_v with_o that_o which_o belong_v to_o man_n some_o thing_n there_o be_v that_o be_v peculiar_a to_o god_n and_o be_v his_o prerogative_n you_o see_v how_o it_o be_v with_o the_o bird_n of_o the_o air_n so_o long_o as_o the_o bird_n fly_v up_o and_o down_o here_o in_o the_o air_n they_o do_v live_v comfortable_o but_o if_o the_o bird_n do_v fly_v up_o to_o the_o element_n of_o fire_n it_o will_v burn_v their_o wing_n and_o they_o will_v fall_v down_o headlong_o so_o here_o so_o long_o as_o a_o man_n in_o his_o humiliation_n keep_v within_o his_o own_o compass_n and_o element_n he_o may_v walk_v comfortable_o there_o but_o if_o a_o man_n in_o humiliation_n will_v soar_v up_o unto_o god_n prerogative_n certain_o his_o soul_n will_v fall_v down_o upon_o the_o earth_n and_o be_v much_o discourage_v now_o i_o pray_v what_o be_v more_o the_o prerogative_n and_o peculiar_a of_o god_n than_o this_o to_o know_v who_o be_v a_o reprobate_n and_o who_o be_v not_o when_o a_o man_n be_v humble_v and_o grieve_v about_o his_o sin_n and_o he_o find_v that_o he_o have_v sin_v much_o against_o god_n and_o thereupon_o he_o conclude_v himself_o to_o be_v a_o reprobate_n be_v not_o this_o â—o_o come_v upon_o god_n prerogative_n the_o scripture_n tell_v a_o man_n indeed_o what_o he_o be_v for_o the_o present_a that_o a_o man_n for_o the_o present_a be_v a_o drunkard_n or_o a_o swearer_n or_o a_o sabbath-breaker_n or_o a_o adulterer_n and_o therefore_o the_o scripture_n tell_v he_o for_o the_o present_a that_o he_o be_v in_o the_o state_n of_o nature_n and_o under_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n but_o do_v the_o scripture_n tell_v he_o that_o he_o be_v a_o reprobate_n that_o he_o can_v never_o be_v convert_v and_o turn_v to_o god_n sure_o this_o be_v god_n great_a prerogative_n to_o know_v his_o secret_n which_o he_o reserve_v to_o himself_o and_o therefore_o when_o a_o man_n go_v to_o be_v humble_v before_o god_n and_o conclude_v o_o i_o be_o a_o reprobate_n and_o there_o be_v no_o hope_n for_o i_o and_o i_o shall_v never_o be_v convert_v this_o be_v to_o soar_v too_o high_a into_o god_n prerogative_n and_o he_o will_v burn_v his_o wing_n and_o he_o will_v fall_v down_o into_o great_a discouragement_n therefore_o in_o all_o your_o humiliation_n take_v heed_n that_o you_o do_v not_o fall_v upon_o any_o thing_n that_o be_v the_o peculiar_a and_o prerogative_n of_o god_n for_o than_o you_o will_v not_o be_v humble_v but_o discourage_v answ_n 5_o five_o the_o more_o you_o be_v father_n also_o do_v you_o present_v the_o lord_n unto_o your_o soul_n only_o under_o the_o notion_n or_o attribute_n of_o his_o greatness_n or_o under_o the_o notion_n and_o attribute_n of_o his_o goodness_n also_o luther_n say_v thus_o when_o my_o heart_n be_v brisk_a and_o jolly_a i_o present_v god_n unto_o myself_o under_o the_o notion_n of_o his_o greatness_n but_o when_o my_o heart_n be_v low_a and_o fear_v than_o i_o present_v god_n to_o i_o under_o the_o notion_n of_o his_o goodness_n one_o while_o i_o consider_v christ_n as_o my_o example_n another_o while_n as_o my_o gift_n when_o my_o heart_n be_v too_o high_a than_o i_o consider_v christ_n as_o my_o example_n when_o my_o spirit_n be_v too_o low_a i_o consider_v christ_n as_o my_o gift_n so_o do_v you_o also_o i_o know_v you_o will_v say_v i_o can_v sometime_o present_v the_o lord_n unto_o my_o soul_n under_o the_o notion_n of_o a_o father_n because_o i_o have_v no_o assurance_n of_o his_o love_n yet_o you_o may_v consider_v the_o lord_n as_o gracious_a in_o himself_o as_o good_a in_o himself_o and_o love_v in_o himself_o and_o say_v i_o have_v thus_o and_o thus_o sin_v against_o a_o gracious_a god_n and_o although_o thou_o have_v not_o assurance_n of_o god_n love_n to_o thou_o in_o particular_a yet_o if_o you_o can_v present_v god_n to_o your_o soul_n under_o the_o notion_n of_o his_o general_a goodness_n as_o good_a in_o himself_o you_o will_v never_o be_v discourage_v but_o be_v humble_v answ_n 6_o six_o and_o last_o if_o you_o will_v be_v true_o humble_v and_o not_o be_v discourage_v not_o discourage_v and_o yet_o humble_v then_o beat_v and_o drive_v up_o all_o your_o sin_n to_o your_o unbeleef_n and_o lay_v the_o stress_n and_o weight_n of_o all_o your_o sorrow_n upon_o that_o sin_n as_o in_o matter_n of_o thankfulness_n if_o a_o man_n do_v run_v up_o every_o mercy_n unto_o the_o fountain_n mercy_n the_o blood_n of_o jesus_n christ_n he_o will_v be_v most_o thankful_a so_o in_o the_o matter_n of_o humiliation_n if_o a_o man_n do_v run_v up_o every_o sin_n unto_o the_o fountain_n the_o head_n sin_n he_o will_v be_v most_o humble_v now_o what_o be_v the_o great_a sin_n the_o fountain_n sin_n the_o head_n sin_n of_o all_o your_o sin_n but_o unbelief_n and_o believe_v it_o he_o be_v never_o far_o from_o faith_n that_o be_v humble_v for_o his_o unbeleef_n and_o he_o will_v never_o be_v discourage_v that_o be_v not_o far_o from_o faith_n now_o therefore_o if_o at_o any_o time_n you_o find_v your_o soul_n in_o any_o sin_n then_o say_v this_o have_v my_o unbeleef_n do_v i_o do_v not_o think_v that_o i_o have_v have_v such_o a_o unbelieved_a heart_n o_o what_o a_o unbelieved_a heart_n have_v i_o this_o even_o all_o this_o sin_n have_v my_o unbeleef_n bring_v humble_v in_o truth_n for_o sin_n because_o he_o be_v humble_v for_o his_o unbeleef_n which_o be_v the_o mother_n sin_n yet_o he_o will_v not_o be_v discourage_v because_o he_o be_v humble_v for_o that_o which_o do_v cause_n all_o discouragement_n lay_v therefore_o the_o weight_n of_o your_o sorrow_n upon_o this_o sin_n and_o you_o shall_v be_v true_o humble_v without_o unjust_a
