denounce_v judgement_n he_o think_v every_o word_n a_o sentence_n every_o threat_v a_o thrave_a of_o judgement_n and_o every_o period_n to_o contain_v in_o it_o a_o exceed_a mass_n and_o hell_n of_o misery_n and_o woe_n this_o prick_v his_o heart_n in_o such_o sort_n that_o he_o know_v not_o what_o to_o do_v and_o make_v he_o to_o cry_v with_o paul_n though_o not_o with_o the_o like_a hope_n o_o wretched_a man_n that_o i_o be_o 7.24_o rom._n 7.24_o who_o shall_v deliver_v i_o from_o this_o body_n of_o sin_n and_o death_n unto_o this_o sight_n of_o sin_n be_v add_v the_o weakness_n faith_n 2._o the_o second_o cause_n be_v the_o weakness_n or_o want_n of_o faith_n and_o many_o time_n the_o want_n of_o faith_n for_o when_o they_o see_v and_o remember_v the_o sweet_a and_o comfortable_a to_o heal_v up_o the_o most_o pestilent_a sore_n and_o to_o cure_v the_o most_o contagious_a and_o deadly_a wound_n of_o sin_n and_o withal_o look_v into_o themselves_o and_o find_v there_o a_o defect_n and_o want_n to_o receive_v and_o apply_v the_o same_o unto_o themselves_o be_v they_o never_o so_o sweet_a and_o precious_a because_o they_o have_v not_o faith_n which_o be_v the_o only_a hand_n to_o retain_v and_o hold_v they_o they_o be_v more_o distress_v and_o affright_v then_o if_o they_o never_o hear_v or_o think_v upon_o they_o insomuch_o that_o as_o satan_n be_v ready_a always_o to_o cast_v something_o in_o their_o way_n thereby_o to_o further_o they_o in_o the_o way_n of_o desperation_n so_o be_v they_o as_o ready_a so_o soon_o as_o it_o shall_v be_v offer_v to_o catch_v it_o and_o accept_v it_o at_o his_o hand_n and_o therefore_o never_o think_v of_o god_n order_n and_o course_n of_o call_v which_o be_v in_o some_o soon_o in_o some_o late_a and_o not_o alike_o in_o all_o because_o they_o feel_v not_o the_o present_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n within_o they_o and_o the_o pulse_n of_o faith_n to_o move_v and_o beat_v in_o their_o heart_n they_o stick_v not_o peremptory_o and_o without_o exception_n to_o conclude_v upon_o themselves_o say_v i_o have_v no_o faith_n i_o can_v believe_v and_o therefore_o i_o can_v be_v save_v my_o sin_n can_v be_v pardon_v i_o be_o but_o a_o reprobate_n and_o a_o damn_a castaway_n so_o that_o this_o motion_n be_v not_o only_o find_v in_o such_o as_o have_v a_o utter_a defect_n and_o want_n of_o faith_n but_o also_o oftentimes_o in_o those_o which_o have_v a_o faith_n who_o although_o as_o i_o have_v say_v they_o have_v a_o faith_n in_o deed_n yet_o it_o be_v but_o a_o weak_a and_o a_o faint_a faith_n and_o such_o a_o one_o as_o for_o infirmity_n be_v not_o able_a to_o move_v and_o stir_v itself_o for_o as_o the_o man_n that_o be_v in_o a_o swoon_n swoon_n such_o who_o faith_n be_v weak_a compare_v to_o a_o man_n in_o a_o swoon_n or_o he_o who_o part_n be_v benumb_v with_o some_o extreme_a cold_a or_o sudden_a stroke_n though_o there_o be_v a_o life_n still_o remain_v in_o they_o yet_o such_o be_v their_o infirmity_n that_o they_o seem_v as_o dead_a and_o be_v unable_a to_o perform_v the_o function_n that_o belong_v unto_o a_o live_a body_n even_o so_o this_o faith_n though_o in_o truth_n it_o be_v a_o faith_n and_o have_v a_o life_n in_o it_o yet_o it_o be_v so_o benumb_a with_o the_o chill_a cold_a of_o sin_n and_o astonish_v with_o the_o stroke_n of_o our_o natural_a imperfection_n that_o it_o seem_v to_o be_v dead_a and_o utter_o void_a of_o vital_a motion_n so_o that_o sin_n unto_o this_o weak_a and_o waver_a soul_n be_v even_o as_o meat_n be_v oftentimes_o to_o he_o that_o surfete_v he_o eat_v it_o with_o delight_n and_o take_v pleasure_n in_o it_o yet_o when_o his_o stomach_n come_v to_o digest_v and_o work_v upon_o it_o the_o strength_n of_o nature_n be_v not_o able_a to_o overcome_v the_o abundance_n of_o unconcoct_v humour_n the_o whole_a body_n be_v sick_a and_o weaken_a in_o every_o part_n and_o faculty_n so_o the_o soul_n that_o be_v glut_v and_o
to_o walk_v in_o righteousness_n but_o now_o lest_o that_o in_o give_v sentence_n and_o judgement_n upon_o this_o sorrow_n we_o shall_v be_v deceive_v it_o be_v here_o again_o to_o be_v call_v to_o mind_n which_o have_v before_o be_v somewhat_o touch_v viz._n that_o sorow_v for_o sin_n be_v prove_v to_o be_v of_o two_o sort_n one_o proper_a to_o the_o elect_a of_o god_n and_o the_o other_o to_o the_o reprobate_n for_o it_o be_v manifest_a that_o even_o these_o i_o mean_v such_o as_o have_v be_v evident_o prove_v reprobate_n have_v be_v find_v to_o have_v have_v a_o certain_a sorrow_n sigh_v and_o mourn_v in_o they_o as_o do_v appear_v by_o the_o example_n of_o cain_n saul_n ahab_n and_o judas_n and_o yet_o nothing_o partaker_n but_o clean_o void_a of_o that_o true_a repentance_n which_o have_v be_v find_v in_o the_o godly_a sort_n and_o choose_a people_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o this_o sorrow_n of_o such_o wicked_a one_o be_v the_o same_o which_o before_o be_v mention_v to_o have_v his_o original_n only_o from_o the_o law_n of_o god_n without_o any_o taste_n or_o touch_v of_o the_o gospel_n but_o that_o other_o sorrow_n which_o we_o use_v in_o this_o place_n as_o a_o mark_n of_o true_a repentance_n and_o which_o i_o account_v as_o the_o forerunner_n of_o repentance_n be_v only_o incident_a and_o do_v proper_o appertain_v to_o the_o elect_a and_o choose_a of_o the_o lord_n and_o be_v find_v to_o have_v a_o far_o further_a step_n than_o have_v the_o former_a and_o therefore_o lest_o we_o deceive_v ourselves_o herein_o as_o hypocrite_n often_o do_v let_v we_o in_o a_o word_n or_o two_o as_o brief_o as_o we_o may_v observe_v the_o difference_n betwixt_o these_o two_o kind_n of_o sorrow_n this_o counterfeit_a and_o hypocritical_a sorrow_n sorrow_n counterf_n it_o and_o hypocritical_a sorrow_n which_o as_o i_o say_v be_v find_v in_o hypocrite_n arise_v from_o the_o law_n and_o that_o only_a in_o consideration_n of_o the_o heavy_a and_o terrible_a judgement_n in_o the_o same_o denounce_v against_o the_o transgressor_n thereof_o and_o hereupon_o it_o be_v that_o they_o mourn_v and_o sigh_v only_o for_o that_o they_o see_v and_o perceive_v themselves_o by_o reason_n of_o their_o great_a sin_n and_o wiekedness_n by_o force_n and_o by_o the_o sentence_n of_o the_o law_n to_o be_v bring_v into_o a_o dangerous_a or_o a_o damnable_a estate_n but_o as_o for_o the_o sin_n itself_o which_o by_o they_o be_v commit_v day_n by_o day_n although_o it_o be_v in_o the_o proper_a nature_n thereof_o never_o so_o filthy_a or_o abominable_a yet_o do_v they_o not_o mourn_v for_o it_o but_o remain_v still_o in_o they_o with_o as_o great_a love_n and_o take_v as_o great_a pleasure_n therein_o and_o have_v as_o great_a a_o desire_n to_o commit_v the_o same_o still_o as_o ever_o they_o have_v at_o any_o time_n before_o so_o small_a a_o alteration_n be_v find_v to_o follow_v in_o they_o upon_o this_o their_o sorrow_n and_o so_o far_o off_o be_v they_o from_o have_v even_o this_o first_o mark_n of_o true_a repentance_n but_o it_o be_v far_o otherwise_o with_o the_o man_n regenerate_v regenerate_v difference_n betwixt_o the_o sorrow_n of_o the_o unregenerate_a and_o regenerate_v for_o although_o his_o sorrow_n begin_v in_o deed_n in_o the_o law_n for_o that_o thereby_o he_o come_v to_o the_o knowledge_n first_o of_o his_o sin_n and_o second_o of_o the_o heavy_a judgement_n by_o the_o law_n due_a unto_o the_o same_o yet_o do_v not_o his_o sorrow_n there_o stay_v and_o make_v a_o end_n but_o end_v indeed_o in_o the_o gospel_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v that_o he_o be_v find_v to_o be_v sad_a &_o heavy_a not_o only_o in_o respect_n or_o regard_n of_o the_o danger_n whereinto_o by_o sin_n he_o be_v bring_v but_o also_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o sin_n itself_o which_o he_o now_o utter_o hate_v and_o detest_v for_o that_o he_o see_v and_o find_v it_o to_o be_v so_o odious_a and_o loathsome_a in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n not_o only_o because_o he_o be_v a_o severe_a judge_n ready_a to_o take_v revenge_n for_o the_o breach_n of_o his_o law_n as_o do_v the_o reprobate_n but_o also_o because_o they_o find_v and_o feel_v he_o to_o be_v so_o good_a so_o gracious_a so_o love_v and_o so_o merciful_a a_o father_n against_o who_o he_o so_o ungracious_o and_o unnatural_o like_o a_o rebellious_a child_n have_v transgress_v and_o although_o that_o this_o his_o sorrow_n in_o these_o respect_n be_v find_v and_o prove_v to_o be_v great_a yet_o be_v he_o not_o therein_o leave_v comfortless_a but_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o sorrow_n find_v comfort_n as_o shall_v appear_v hereafter_o again_o this_o sorrow_n proceed_v of_o the_o fear_n of_o punishment_n of_o sin_n by_o the_o law_n bring_v forth_o desperation_n in_o the_o reprobate_n as_o appear_v in_o cain_n and_o judas_n and_o other_o if_o it_o stay_v only_o in_o the_o law_n and_o have_v no_o regard_n unto_o the_o gospel_n for_o the_o law_n bring_v nothing_o else_o but_o terror_n and_o judgement_n the_o law_n indeed_o will_v justify_v and_o upon_o instification_n minister_v unto_o man_n great_a consolation_n but_o it_o must_v in_o all_o point_n according_a to_o the_o purity_n thereof_o be_v fulfil_v which_o we_o through_o our_o weakness_n be_v not_o able_a to_o do_v and_o therefore_o instead_o of_o justify_v we_o reap_v a_o curse_n and_o instead_o of_o consolation_n do_v gain_v sorrow_n which_o sorrow_n be_v wrought_v and_o effect_v in_o the_o heart_n by_o the_o spirit_n indeed_o but_o it_o be_v by_o that_o spirit_n which_o the_o apostle_n call_v the_o spirit_n of_o bondage_n 8._o rom._n 8._o which_o bring_v forth_o nought_o but_o fear_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v by_o the_o same_o apostle_n call_v not_o simple_o a_o sorrow_n but_o a_o have_v always_o the_o hope_n of_o remission_n and_o forgiveness_n of_o the_o same_o join_v therewith_o for_o they_o see_v and_o plain_o perceive_v that_o god_n show_v himself_o to_o them-ward_n as_o a_o kind_n and_o love_a father_n and_o therefore_o if_o at_o any_o time_n he_o afflict_v and_o chastise_v they_o they_o do_v and_o be_v bold_a to_o confess_v the_o same_o also_o that_o he_o do_v it_o for_o their_o good_a that_o they_o shall_v not_o perish_v with_o the_o world_n and_o that_o these_o his_o chastisement_n notwithstanding_o upon_o their_o repentance_n he_o will_v be_v ever_o ready_a the_o selfsame_o person_n sorrow_n that_o so_o good_a a_o god_n shall_v be_v offend_v and_o joy_n that_o all_o their_o sin_n be_v notwithstanding_o pardon_v and_o all_o this_o be_v doubtless_o himself_o now_o as_o these_o thing_n hitherto_o have_v be_v utter_v for_o direction_n so_o some_o thing_n also_o be_v to_o be_v annex_v partly_o out_o of_o that_o which_o go_v before_o and_o partly_o over_o and_o beside_o the_o same_o to_o instruct_v and_o teach_v the_o man_n in_o conscience_n trouble_v and_o disquiet_v with_o the_o weakness_n of_o repentance_n and_o the_o manifold_a imperfection_n which_o he_o find_v in_o himself_o how_o he_o may_v use_v and_o demean_v himself_o in_o view_n and_o meditation_n of_o they_o and_o that_o he_o may_v do_v it_o with_o great_a comfort_n &_o less_o distrust_n first_o therefore_o i_o will_v wish_v and_o advise_v such_o a_o man_n not_o to_o pass_v over_o every_o thing_n light_o in_o a_o slight_a manner_n trial_n not_o rest_n in_o fear_n without_o due_a trial_n without_o a_o due_a and_o deliberate_a consideration_n as_o be_v the_o common_a use_n of_o the_o sorrowful_a soul_n but_o rather_o to_o grow_v to_o a_o thorough_a trial_n and_o examination_n of_o himself_o for_o oftentimes_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o for_o want_v hereof_o there_o arise_v many_o great_a discomfort_n unto_o man_n when_o man_n either_o utter_o refuse_v or_o else_o by_o reason_n of_o some_o light_a cause_n defer_v the_o matter_n do_v not_o search_v so_o deep_o into_o themselves_o as_o they_o shall_v and_o so_o through_o this_o default_n they_o do_v bereave_v themselves_o of_o the_o sight_n and_o knowledge_n of_o those_o good_a motion_n of_o faith_n and_o the_o comfort_n thereof_o come_v which_o other_o man_n do_v enjoy_v and_o in_o this_o point_n it_o fall_v out_o with_o man_n refuse_v or_o delay_v to_o make_v this_o trial_n as_o it_o do_v with_o a_o man_n disease_v with_o a_o sore_n and_o grievous_a imposthume_n who_o if_o he_o do_v look_v only_o upon_o the_o outward_a appearance_n find_v nothing_o but_o such_o matter_n as_o still_o threaten_v grief_n and_o anguish_n but_o if_o he_o pierce_v into_o it_o and_o lance_n it_o feel_v present_a ease_n so_o while_o the_o sorrowful_a soul_n look_v only_o upon_o the_o outward_a appearance_n of_o his_o imperfection_n he_o shall_v find_v nothing_o but_o matter_n to_o move_v and_o lead_v he_o to_o despair_v but_o if_o he_o pierce_v into_o himself_o and_o into_o the_o secret_a chamber_n of_o his_o heart_n by_o due_a trial_n and_o examination_n of_o himself_o and_o be_v not_o too_o austere_a a_o judge_n over_o himself_o he_o shall_v find_v at_o one_o time_n or_o other_o that_o which_o may_v serve_v unto_o he_o as_o a_o cause_n of_o great_a and_o exceed_a comfort_n second_o i_o the_o accuser_n and_o in_o this_o the_o conscience_n be_v as_o a_o judge_n the_o silly_a soul_n now_o as_o a_o offender_n in_o woeful_a case_n stand_v at_o the_o bar_n hold_v up_o the_o hand_n to_o be_v try_v and_o find_v either_o guilty_a or_o not_o guilty_a this_o as_o i_o have_v say_v the_o silly_a soul_n be_v no_o doubt_n the_o principal_a part_n of_o man_n and_o most_o to_o be_v account_v of_o as_o a_o most_o precious_a jewel_n for_o although_o a_o man_n have_v never_o so_o great_a abundance_n of_o earthly_a treasure_n yet_o be_v it_o nothing_o in_o comparison_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o to_o gain_v and_o get_v the_o whole_a world_n it_o profit_v not_o at_o all_o to_o a_o man_n 9.25_o luk._n 9.25_o if_o he_o lose_v his_o own_o soul_n and_o therefore_o though_o our_o post_a and_o of_o god_n against_o these_o so_o malicious_a and_o envious_a accuser_n advocate_n i'faith_o his_o advocate_n still_o urge_v the_o heinousness_n of_o thy_o iniquity_n faith_n as_o a_o wise_a and_o scant_o be_v hear_v and_o hereupon_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o the_o conscience_n of_o man_n give_v care_n most_o to_o the_o evidence_n of_o the_o accuser_n and_o not_o attendant_a to_o that_o spend_v their_o life_n very_o dissolute_o and_o die_v to_o the_o outward_a appearance_n very_o miserable_o that_o therefore_o these_o be_v judgement_n proceed_v of_o god_n hatred_n and_o token_n of_o his_o eternal_a resection_n of_o they_o we_o may_v read_v of_o many_o both_o in_o the_o old_a &_o late_a time_n in_o foreign_a and_o also_o in_o our_o own_o country_n which_o have_v tyrannous_o oppress_v and_o cruel_o persecute_v the_o poor_a member_n and_o faithful_a servant_n of_o our_o saviour_n jesus_n christ_n which_o die_v strange_a and_o unwonted_a death_n and_o suffer_v in_o their_o end_n most_o terrible_a and_o unspeakle_n torment_v yet_o since_o the_o time_n and_o manner_n of_o god_n call_v be_v so_o secret_a and_o unknown_a unto_o we_o shall_v i_o say_v that_o therefore_o they_o be_v condemn_v let_v other_o use_v their_o judgement_n i_o dare_v not_o do_v it_o for_o my_o opinion_n be_v that_o extremity_n be_v no_o reason_n and_o strange_a torment_n be_v no_o argument_n to_o convince_v so_o great_a a_o matter_n they_o rest_v unto_o the_o judgement_n of_o the_o lord_n to_o who_o they_o either_o stand_v or_o fall_v and_o yet_o for_o the_o comfort_n of_o all_o god_n child_n be_v it_o also_o add_v that_o oftentimes_o in_o these_o extremity_n and_o agony_n even_o in_o the_o very_a suffering_n and_o endure_v of_o they_o the_o elect_a of_o god_n shall_v find_v many_o undoubted_a reasous_n whereupon_o they_o may_v certain_o and_o without_o all_o doubt_n conclude_v their_o salvation_n and_o that_o they_o be_v in_o the_o number_n of_o god_n elect_n and_o choose_a and_o this_o be_v by_o the_o fruit_n and_o effect_n of_o true_a and_o lively_a faith_n work_v and_o move_v in_o they_o which_o effect_n sometime_o again_o be_v so_o suppress_v and_o sinother_v under_o the_o violence_n of_o their_o pain_n and_o misery_n that_o they_o seem_v oftentimes_o yea_o and_o many_o of_o they_o also_o even_o in_o the_o very_a point_n of_o death_n and_o be_v ready_a to_o yield_v up_o the_o ghost_n unto_o the_o judgement_n of_o man_n to_o have_v no_o feel_n of_o comfort_n in_o christ_n and_o to_o savour_n only_o of_o despair_n and_o yet_o for_o all_o this_o depart_v hence_o the_o elect_a of_o god_n and_o in_o the_o number_n of_o his_o faithful_a servant_n chap._n xxiii_o of_o the_o five_o position_n these_o thing_n be_v thus_o conclude_v as_o we_o have_v answer_v satan_n objection_n and_o in_o answer_v remove_v his_o discomfort_n whereinto_o he_o seek_v to_o cast_v the_o child_n of_o god_n so_o now_o let_v we_o gather_v as_o it_o be_v into_o a_o brief_a sum_n the_o comfort_n before_o entreat_v of_o and_o also_o further_o see_v what_o comfort_v more_o we_o can_v make_v against_o this_o temptation_n and_o what_o spiritual_a diet_n be_v herein_o fit_a and_o most_o convevient_a for_o the_o afflict_a &_o distress_a soul_n to_o use_v for_o the_o preservation_n of_o his_o soul_n health_n the_o first_o comfort_n comfort_n 1._o comfort_n be_v the_o consideration_n of_o the_o motive_n cause_n in_o god_n of_o these_o affliction_n and_o that_o be_v love_n and_o mercy_n which_o he_o bear_v unto_o these_o his_o servant_n who_o he_o do_v vouchsafe_v thus_o to_o afflict_v and_o chasten_v for_o this_o serve_v if_o it_o be_v well_o consider_v as_o a_o rein_n to_o hold_v back_o and_o restrain_v the_o violence_n of_o despair_a thought_n when_o as_o we_o call_v to_o mind_n and_o remember_v that_o he_o that_o lay_v and_o inflict_v these_o thing_n upon_o we_o be_v love_o affect_v and_o dispose_v towards_o we_o and_o therefore_o will_v sure_o herein_o proceed_v no_o further_o then_o shall_v be_v for_o our_o good_a and_o benefit_n comfort_n 2._o comfort_n unto_o this_o let_v we_o add_v for_o the_o second_o comfort_n the_o consideration_n of_o the_o sinall_z cause_n or_o end_v wherefore_o god_n do_v thus_o correct_v and_o chasten_v his_o child_n and_o that_o be_v to_o work_v in_o they_o amendment_n to_o quicken_v stir_v up_o increase_v his_o grace_n in_o they_o that_o they_o may_v shine_v &_o appear_v more_o bright_a and_o clear_a and_o to_o deliver_v we_o from_o the_o danger_n of_o those_o thing_n as_o sin_n and_o death_n whereinto_o by_o reason_n of_o the_o weakness_n and_o exceed_a frailty_n of_o our_o nature_n we_o be_v ready_a every_o day_n to_o slip_v and_o fall_v if_o by_o these_o his_o fatherly_a and_o gentle_a correction_n we_o be_v not_o restrain_v oftentimes_o also_o comfort_n 3._o comfort_n we_o must_v herein_o call_v to_o mind_n the_o great_a care_n of_o god_n which_o he_o have_v for_o his_o servant_n in_o inflict_v &_o lay_v these_o correction_n upon_o they_o in_o that_o at_o all_o time_n and_o in_o every_o several_a person_n he_o have_v a_o special_a respect_n and_o regard_n that_o they_o exceed_v not_o measure_n but_o still_o do_v limit_n and_o order_v they_o according_a to_o our_o ability_n in_o tolerate_v the_o
as_o belong_v and_o appertain_v to_o themselves_o true_a faith_n therefore_o have_v always_o though_o not_o ever_o in_o the_o high_a measure_n this_o apply_v virtue_n annex_v with_o it_o as_o a_o essential_a property_n so_o that_o as_o in_o two_o member_n the_o one_o be_v dead_a the_o other_o quick_a and_o lively_a thou_o may_v easy_o discern_v which_o be_v lively_a by_o the_o live_n and_o vital_a motion_n in_o minister_a and_o serve_v unto_o the_o necessary_a use_n of_o the_o body_n so_o by_o this_o lively_a motion_n wherein_o the_o life_n of_o faith_n in_o part_n appear_v thou_o may_v discern_v &_o know_v thy_o faith_n to_o be_v quick_a and_o live_a in_o that_o it_o do_v thus_o minister_v unto_o thy_o soul_n by_o apply_v the_o merit_n of_o christ_n and_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o gospel_n to_o the_o consolation_n and_o comfort_n thereof_o for_o which_o cause_n also_o this_o motion_n of_o faith_n be_v call_v sometime_o phronesis_n prudence_n or_o understanding_n because_o herein_o our_o faith_n do_v show_v forth_o and_o manifest_v a_o skill_n and_o discretion_n in_o make_v the_o use_n of_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o gospel_n who_o knowledge_n we_o have_v attain_v as_o for_o that_o other_o faith_n of_o hypocrite_n hypecrite_n the_o faith_n of_o hypecrite_n that_o be_v inst_o compare_v to_o the_o dead_a member_n for_o that_o it_o want_v this_o motion_n of_o life_n it_o have_v not_o this_o strength_n to_o apprehend_v nor_o force_n and_o power_n to_o apply_v though_o otherwise_o he_o that_o have_v it_o seem_v to_o be_v sufficient_o instruct_v in_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o mystery_n of_o the_o death_n and_o passion_n of_o christ_n for_o this_o faith_n indeed_o consist_v only_o in_o a_o bare_a and_o naked_a knowledge_n without_o any_o further_a use_n and_o therefore_o christ_n our_o saviour_n speak_v of_o this_o faith_n say_v indeed_o it_o receive_v the_o seed_n and_o the_o seed_n sprout_v and_o spring_v out_o again_o but_o yet_o it_o never_o bear_v fruit_n for_o these_o kind_n of_o man_n be_v know_v to_o be_v endue_v with_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o word_n and_o of_o the_o gospel_n and_o seem_v to_o have_v profit_v and_o proceed_v therein_o that_o they_o can_v discourse_v and_o reason_n of_o the_o same_o and_o that_o oftentimes_o very_o profound_o and_o learned_o but_o yet_o all_o this_o be_v nothing_o at_o all_o to_o the_o purpose_n for_o all_o this_o while_n they_o want_v the_o principal_a which_o be_v the_o fruit_n and_o use_v of_o these_o thing_n in_o particular_a application_n thereof_o unto_o their_o soul_n and_o if_o it_o so_o fall_v out_o that_o they_o find_v any_o joy_n within_o themselves_o in_o regard_n hereof_o as_o oftentimes_o they_o do_v right_n the_o joy_n of_o hypocrite_n compare_v to_o the_o joy_n of_o one_o that_o have_v find_v some_o treasure_n to_o which_o he_o have_v no_o good_a right_n yet_o it_o be_v but_o like_o the_o joy_n of_o one_o that_o walk_v forth_o have_v find_v a_o treasure_n or_o precious_a jewel_n that_o be_v lose_v he_o be_v glad_a and_o rejoice_v in_o himself_o at_o such_o a_o precious_a accident_n as_o though_o it_o be_v his_o own_o and_o that_o he_o have_v a_o good_a interest_n unto_o the_o same_o and_o yet_o he_o can_v in_o no_o wise_n assure_v himself_o that_o it_o be_v or_o shall_v be_v his_o good_n because_o be_v a_o thing_n lose_v it_o be_v likely_a the_o owner_n will_v make_v inquisition_n after_o it_o and_o then_o his_o conscience_n as_o good_a as_o a_o thousand_o witness_n in_o this_o case_n tell_v he_o that_o if_o the_o matter_n be_v well_o consider_v of_o there_o be_v no_o reason_n or_o cause_n of_o joy_n at_o all_o howsoever_o thus_o foolish_o and_o rash_o he_o conceive_v of_o it_o before_o so_o likewise_o the_o hypocrite_n have_v attain_v unto_o this_o knowledge_n of_o the_o mystery_n of_o life_n and_o thus_o light_v upon_o this_o most_o precious_a and_o most_o costly_a jewel_n of_o man_n redemption_n by_o and_o through_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n seem_v therein_o to_o joy_n and_o delight_v himself_o and_o yet_o when_o he_o have_v thorough_o try_v and_o examine_v himself_o he_o find_v that_o in_o very_a deed_n this_o jewel_n do_v not_o of_o right_a appertain_v unto_o he_o but_o to_o other_o and_o that_o not_o he_o but_o other_o may_v claim_v a_o right_n and_o interest_n unto_o the_o same_o chap._n xxxii_o of_o the_o effect_n whereby_o the_o truth_n of_o faith_n may_v be_v know_v as_o by_o the_o nature_n effect_n 2._o true_a faith_n know_v by_o the_o effect_n so_o by_o the_o effect_n also_o the_o truth_n of_o faith_n may_v be_v discern_v and_o know_v in_o treat_v whereof_o my_o purpose_n be_v to_o fetch_v the_o ground_n of_o my_o discourse_n from_o the_o word_n of_o the_o apostle_n write_v in_o the_o begin_n of_o the_o sift_n chapter_n of_o the_o epistle_n to_o the_o roman_n 5._o rom._n 5.1_o 2_o 3_o 4_o 5._o where_o we_o read_v in_o this_o manner_n then_o be_v justify_v by_o faith_n we_o have_v peace_n towards_o god_n through_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n by_o who_o also_o we_o have_v access_n through_o faith_n unto_o his_o grace_n wherein_o we_o stand_v and_o rejoice_v under_o the_o hope_n of_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n neither_o do_v we_o so_o only_o but_o we_o rejoice_v in_o tribulation_n know_v that_o tribulation_n bring_v forth_o patience_n etc._n etc._n unto_o the_o sixth_o verse_n of_o the_o same_o chapter_n in_o which_o word_n the_o apostle_n paul_n as_o we_o may_v plain_o see_v set_v down_o six_o notable_a fruit_n and_o effect_n of_o a_o true_a and_o justify_v faith_n for_o of_o such_o a_o faith_n only_o do_v the_o apostle_n there_o speak_v and_o this_o also_o may_v very_o well_o be_v prove_v and_o confirm_v by_o this_o namely_o that_o these_o fruit_n be_v such_o as_o do_v follow_v those_o that_o be_v justify_v and_o at_o that_o time_n only_o when_o as_o they_o be_v now_o already_o justify_v for_o so_o do_v the_o apostle_n word_n import_n be_v justify_v by_o faith_n than_o we_o have_v peace_n etc._n etc._n so_o that_o these_o fruit_n and_o effect_n can_v never_o befall_v unto_o a_o counterfeit_n and_o false_a faith_n of_o the_o hypocrite_n and_o therefore_o be_v good_a and_o undoubted_a mark_n and_o token_n whereby_o we_o may_v know_v that_o faith_n to_o be_v a_o true_a faith_n and_o those_o to_o have_v a_o lively_a and_o a_o justify_n faith_n in_o who_o they_o do_v appear_v the_o first_o fruit_n and_o effect_n of_o this_o true_a and_o justify_v faith_n faith_n 1._o fruit_n of_o true_a faith_n be_v peace_n with_o god_n for_o be_v justify_v by_o faith_n say_v the_o apostle_n we_o have_v peace_n with_o god_n whereby_o be_v mean_v not_o only_o a_o reconcilement_n make_v in_o that_o god_n have_v remit_v and_o forgive_v our_o sin_n but_o also_o a_o inward_a and_o joyful_a sense_n and_o feel_n of_o the_o same_o in_o our_o heart_n and_o soul_n 1._o a_o twofold_a peace_n 1._o there_o be_v in_o the_o scripture_n a_o double_a peace_n from_o god_n set_v set_v down_o the_o one_o be_v that_o reconciliation_n and_o atonement_n wherewith_o god_n be_v pacify_v towards_o we_o and_o this_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o the_o remission_n of_o our_o sin_n and_o our_o justification_n in_o christ_n and_o in_o this_o respect_n christ_n be_v say_v to_o preach_v peace_n 2.17_o ephes_n 2.17_o to_o they_o that_o be_v afar_o off_o and_o to_o they_o that_o be_v nigh_o and_o this_o be_v that_o peace_n which_o the_o angel_n bring_v news_n of_o unto_o the_o shepherd_n luke_n 2._o saying_n glory_n be_v to_o god_n on_o high_a 2.24.2_o luke_n 2.24.2_o and_o peace_n on_o earth_n the_o other_o peace_n be_v that_o which_o issue_v and_o proceed_v as_o a_o effect_n from_o the_o former_a and_o that_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o the_o feel_n and_o inward_a taste_n and_o assurance_n of_o the_o former_a peace_n and_o reconcilement_n and_o of_o this_o it_o be_v that_o the_o apostle_n here_o speak_v conscience_n peace_n of_o conscience_n this_o peace_n be_v common_o call_v the_o peace_n of_o conscience_n for_o the_o conscience_n that_o before_o be_v trouble_v and_o disquiet_v with_o the_o sight_n and_o horror_n of_o sin_n do_v now_o feel_v a_o certain_a peace_n and_o ease_n in_o that_o it_o have_v a_o certain_a taste_n and_o persuasion_n of_o the_o love_n of_o god_n and_o of_o pardon_n and_o remission_n of_o the_o same_o sin_n in_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n of_o this_o manner_n of_o peace_n speak_v our_o saviour_n christ_n in_o the_o fourteen_o of_o john_n my_o peace_n give_v i_o unto_o you_o 4.7_o joh._n 14.27_o phil._n 4.7_o and_o likewise_o the_o apostle_n paul_n phil._n 4.7_o the_o peace_n of_o god_n which_o pass_v all_o understanding_n shall_v preserve_v your_o heart_n and_o mind_n in_o christ_n jesus_n in_o which_o last_o word_n in_o christ_n jesus_n this_o be_v
consider_v we_o may_v plain_o see_v that_o it_o be_v a_o thing_n of_o no_o difficulty_n for_o the_o person_n regenerate_v to_o make_v a_o true_a difference_n betwixt_o himself_o and_o a_o hypocrite_n and_o betwixt_o his_o own_o work_n and_o the_o work_n of_o a_o hypocrite_n and_o so_o in_o himself_o he_o may_v be_v assure_v that_o if_o his_o work_n be_v do_v in_o faith_n in_o humility_n and_o love_n and_o to_o those_o good_a and_o godly_a end_n as_o i_o have_v declare_v how_o near_o so_o ever_o they_o appear_v to_o the_o work_n of_o hypocrite_n in_o matter_n yet_o differ_v so_o far_o from_o they_o in_o manner_n they_o be_v doubtless_o the_o true_a fruit_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o sanctification_n and_o therefore_o himself_o also_o undoubted_o to_o be_v in_o the_o tale_n and_o number_n of_o god_n adopt_a child_n chap._n xxxvi_o of_o the_o second_o objection_n hitherto_o we_o have_v show_v how_o the_o man_n regenerate_v may_v be_v assure_v of_o his_o adoption_n now_o we_o be_v come_v to_o the_o other_o objection_n which_o be_v that_o the_o righteous_a man_n and_o regenerate_a may_v fall_v again_o and_o therefore_o that_o all_o this_o which_o have_v be_v say_v be_v not_o to_o any_o purpose_n or_o effect_n for_o that_o he_o be_v not_o assure_v of_o his_o continuance_n and_o perseverance_n unto_o the_o end_n to_o this_o i_o answer_v that_o this_o doctrine_n thus_o urge_v the_o final_a fall_n of_o the_o faithful_a be_v indeed_o as_o far_o from_o the_o truth_n as_o truth_n itself_o be_v say_v to_o be_v from_o falsehood_n for_o what_o a_o dangerous_a point_n of_o doctrine_n be_v it_o that_o i_o speak_v no_o hardly_o that_o any_o man_n shall_v once_o think_v that_o they_o which_o be_v once_o renew_v and_o regenerate_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o sanctification_n can_v afterward_o relapse_n and_o fall_v away_o without_o recovery_n this_o doctrine_n i_o may_v very_o well_o call_v dangerous_a because_o it_o be_v a_o doctrine_n first_o broach_v by_o satan_n himself_o the_o author_n of_o all_o mischief_n &_o therefore_o very_o prejudicial_a unto_o man_n salvation_n and_o not_o in_o any_o hand_n to_o be_v of_o we_o receive_v or_o hearken_v unto_o yea_o which_o be_v more_o it_o be_v find_v to_o be_v very_o injurious_a even_o to_o all_o the_o person_n in_o the_o deity_n in_o that_o their_o eternal_a decree_n be_v thereby_o as_o far_o as_o satan_n can_v prevail_v falsify_v &_o make_v frustrate_a &_o void_a nay_o this_o rather_o ought_v to_o be_v write_v and_o register_v for_o a_o undoubted_a and_o everlasting_a truth_n in_o the_o heart_n &_o upon_o the_o table_n of_o every_o faithful_a &_o christian_a soul_n that_o they_o that_o be_v once_o thorough_o and_o effectual_o call_v &_o regenerate_v can_v never_o fall_v away_o for_o ever_o but_o shall_v &_o must_v continue_v &_o persevere_v unto_o the_o end_n once_o regenerate_v &_o in_o the_o state_n of_o grace_n and_o ever_o so_o whatsoever_o satan_n &_o thy_o sinful_a flesh_n can_v devise_v &_o practice_v against_o thou_o my_o reason_n to_o prove_v this_o my_o assertion_n be_v as_o follow_v the_o first_o reason_n be_v bring_v from_o the_o certainty_n and_o immutability_n of_o the_o decree_n of_o god_n election_n reason_n 1._o reason_n for_o this_o decree_n can_v by_o any_o mean_n which_o satan_n can_v devise_v be_v alter_v and_o change_v for_o they_o that_o be_v predestinate_a unto_o life_n shall_v never_o be_v conden_v and_o contrariwise_o they_o that_o be_v ordain_v unto_o death_n shall_v out_o of_o doubt_n be_v never_o save_v the_o reason_n be_v because_o that_o god_n who_o be_v the_o author_n of_o this_o decree_n do_v never_o alter_v or_o change_v &_o therefore_o his_o decree_n &_o purpose_n can_v be_v alter_v or_o change_v if_o it_o be_v so_o that_o his_o counsel_n can_v be_v change_v in_o this_o point_n these_o inconvenience_n will_v then_o follow_v that_o either_o god_n can_v not_o perform_v what_o he_o have_v decree_v and_o determine_v or_o else_o that_o in_o continuance_n of_o time_n the_o same_o decree_n may_v be_v better_v &_o amend_v both_o which_o be_v far_o from_o the_o nature_n of_o god_n either_o not_o to_o be_v able_a to_o perform_v his_o will_n or_o not_o to_o see_v even_o at_o first_o and_o before_o all_o time_n what_o be_v agreeable_a to_o his_o own_o nature_n and_o most_o behooveful_a for_o his_o own_o glory_n this_o be_v most_o certain_a and_o of_o all_o the_o faithful_a to_o be_v receive_v as_o a_o undoubted_a verity_n that_o as_o god_n have_v be_v most_o wise_a and_o prudent_a before_o all_o beginning_n in_o his_o counsel_n and_o decree_n so_o he_o be_v and_o shall_v continue_v most_o powerful_a even_o for_o all_o eternity_n in_o perform_v and_o effect_v of_o the_o same_o wherefore_o since_o the_o election_n of_o every_o one_o of_o god_n faithful_a child_n be_v a_o thing_n so_o certain_a and_o so_o immutable_a that_o it_o can_v never_o change_v and_o since_o it_o be_v also_o prove_v that_o every_o one_o of_o the_o elect_n in_o his_o due_a time_n may_v assure_v himself_o that_o he_o be_v elect_v it_o also_o follow_v of_o necessity_n that_o he_o may_v in_o like_a sort_n assure_v himself_o of_o his_o continuance_n and_o perseverance_n unto_o the_o end_n nay_o i_o add_v further_o that_o he_o ought_v to_o do_v no_o less_o because_o that_o otherwise_o he_o shall_v make_v god_n to_o be_v variable_a and_o uncertain_a in_o his_o decree_n and_o purpose_n as_o one_o want_v either_o wisdom_n sufficient_a beforehand_o to_o decree_n and_o purpose_n or_o power_n in_o time_n appoint_v to_o perform_v his_o will_n in_o who_o the_o scripture_n have_v teach_v we_o to_o account_v both_o these_o namely_o his_o wisdom_n and_o power_n and_o also_o all_o other_o his_o essential_a property_n to_o be_v in_o the_o high_a degree_n of_o all_o perfection_n yea_o beyond_o all_o measure_n and_o account_n the_o second_o reason_n be_v bring_v from_o the_o motive_n cause_n of_o this_o election_n reason_n 2_o reason_n whole_o and_o alone_o in_o god_n love_n and_o in_o his_o glory_n for_o because_o of_o himself_o he_o love_v we_o therefore_o he_o elect_v we_o and_o because_o he_o will_v in_o this_o sort_n be_v glorify_v in_o we_o he_o so_o decree_v of_o us._n the_o cause_n be_v durable_a continual_a and_o subject_a to_o no_o change_n and_o how_o can_v then_o our_o election_n cease_v to_o be_v perpetual_a god_n love_n be_v limit_v with_o no_o time_n but_o who_o he_o love_v he_o love_v with_o a_o everlasting_a love_n and_o when_o think_v you_o shall_v that_o time_n be_v ever_o find_v
