part_n they_o be_v all_o vanish_v though_o he_o make_v a_o great_a noise_n for_o a_o time_n while_o the_o follower_n of_o jesus_n multiply_v and_o increase_v even_o by_o their_o persecution_n nor_o can_v apollonius_n afterward_o gain_v any_o proselyte_n that_o continue_v but_o his_o fame_n soon_o die_v together_o with_o himself_o whereas_o the_o authority_n of_o jesus_n bear_v up_o itself_o against_o all_o the_o opposition_n of_o the_o roman_a empire_n and_o not_o only_o be_v support_v but_o advance_v and_o prevail_v more_o and_o more_o their_o barbarous_a cruelty_n only_o make_v it_o grow_v the_o fast_o for_o herein_o as_o lactantius_n observe_v the_o faith_n and_o constancy_n of_o christian_n be_v brave_o display_v man_n think_v they_o do_v not_o without_o cause_n abhor_v the_o believe_v in_o jesus_n as_o those_o martyr_n do_v but_o it_o be_v time_n to_o put_v a_o end_n to_o this_o chapter_n which_o i_o shall_v conclude_v with_o a_o few_o remark_n upon_o some_o place_n of_o the_o holy_a book_n relate_v to_o the_o testimony_n of_o the_o apostle_n or_o those_o that_o follow_v they_o the_o first_o be_v in_o the_o 2_o cor._n vi_o 4_o 5_o 6_o etc._n etc._n where_o you_o read_v how_o the_o apostle_n approve_v themselves_o as_o the_o minister_n of_o god_n in_o much_o patience_n in_o affliction_n in_o necessity_n in_o distress_n in_o stripe_n in_o imprisonment_n in_o tumult_n in_o labour_n in_o watch_n in_o fasting_n by_o pureness_n by_o knowledge_n by_o long-suffering_a by_o kindness_n by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n by_o love_n unfeigned_a by_o the_o word_n of_o truth_n etc._n etc._n in_o which_o word_n if_o they_o be_v well_o consider_v you_o will_v find_v every_o one_o of_o these_o three_o witness_n which_o s._n john_n say_v give_v testimony_n to_o our_o saviour_n on_o earth_n so_o that_o he_o may_v be_v say_v to_o come_v in_o the_o ministry_n of_o the_o apostle_n by_o water_n and_o blood_n and_o the_o spirit_n they_o express_v the_o holiness_n of_o his_o life_n by_o their_o pureness_n by_o their_o long-suffering_a by_o their_o kindness_n by_o love_n unfeigned_a by_o the_o armour_n of_o righteousness_n on_o the_o right_a hand_n and_o on_o the_o left_a that_o be_v they_o be_v every_o way_n appoint_v and_o arm_v with_o integrity_n against_o all_o calumny_n there_o be_v none_o that_o can_v touch_v their_o reputation_n and_o say_v that_o these_o man_n have_v any_o worldly_a design_n and_o as_o they_o witness_v to_o he_o thus_o in_o their_o holy_a life_n so_o they_o do_v in_o their_o holy_a doctrine_n by_o knowledge_n and_o by_o the_o word_n of_o truth_n preach_v the_o gospel_n sincere_o as_o those_o that_o study_v not_o to_o please_v man_n but_o god_n who_o tri_v the_o heart_n and_o they_o be_v make_v conformable_a also_o to_o his_o death_n and_o thereby_o continue_v the_o witness_n of_o the_o blood_n in_o much_o patience_n in_o affliction_n in_o necessity_n in_o distress_n in_o imprisonment_n and_o all_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o hardship_n here_o mention_v which_o i_o need_v not_o transcribe_v again_o and_o last_o he_o forget_v not_o to_o remember_v they_o of_o the_o witness_n of_o the_o spirit_n which_o they_o bring_v along_o with_o they_o for_o he_o say_v they_o approve_v themselves_o as_o minister_n of_o god_n by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o by_o the_o power_n of_o god_n that_o be_v beside_o all_o the_o other_o divine_a gift_n wherewith_o they_o appear_v they_o confirm_v their_o doctrine_n by_o many_o miraculous_a work_n which_o can_v not_o be_v do_v but_o by_o the_o power_n of_o god_n thus_o they_o become_v not_o only_o his_o witness_n as_o our_o saviour_n say_v they_o shall_v xxiv_o luke_n 48._o but_o they_o witness_v to_o he_o after_o the_o very_a same_o manner_n that_o he_o have_v teach_v in_o his_o example_n by_o water_n by_o blood_n and_o by_o the_o spirit_n and_o therefore_o when_o he_o exhort_v timothy_n to_o preach_v the_o gospel_n and_o to_o be_v strong_a in_o the_o grace_n of_o jesus_n christ_n and_o to_o commit_v the_o charge_n of_o preach_v also_o to_o other_o faithful_a person_n he_o enforce_v his_o persuasion_n by_o this_o argument_n that_o the_o thing_n he_o be_v to_o deliver_v import_v that_o the_o whole_a body_n of_o christian_n who_o they_o instruct_v join_v with_o they_o in_o this_o testimony_n but_o still_o these_o great_a minister_n of_o jesus_n christ_n the_o guide_n and_o leader_n of_o those_o christian_n whosoever_o they_o be_v and_o in_o what_o time_n soever_o they_o live_v i_o meddle_v not_o with_o such_o difficulty_n be_v his_o most_o eminent_a witness_n who_o preach_v the_o gospel_n with_o such_o power_n that_o it_o excite_v against_o they_o the_o fury_n of_o unbeliever_n who_o can_v not_o endure_v that_o such_o witness_n shall_v speak_v for_o jesus_n for_o they_o testify_v to_o he_o these_o three_o way_n here_o mention_v which_o be_v all_o that_o i_o allege_v this_o place_n for_o not_o take_v upon_o i_o to_o interpose_v in_o the_o controversy_n there_o be_v about_o the_o explanation_n of_o this_o vision_n by_o water_n blood_n and_o the_o spirit_n first_o by_o water_n if_o
to_o prove_v the_o truth_n of_o that_o which_o the_o person_n that_o wrought_v they_o deliver_v and_o therefore_o as_o their_o miracle_n demonstrate_v the_o truth_n of_o that_o message_n which_o moses_n and_o the_o prophet_n bring_v from_o god_n so_o our_o saviour_n evince_v the_o truth_n of_o he_o which_o be_v that_o they_o be_v only_o the_o servant_n but_o he_o the_o son_n of_o god_n this_o be_v as_o strong_o attest_v by_o what_o he_o do_v as_o any_o thing_n the_o man_n of_o god_n teach_v in_o former_a time_n be_v by_o their_o work_n yea_o his_o miracle_n bear_v as_o fair_a a_o proportion_n in_o their_o bigness_n and_o number_n to_o this_o high_a and_o great_a thing_n which_o they_o be_v to_o prove_v that_o he_o be_v god_n son_n as_o the_o miracle_n of_o moses_n and_o the_o prophet_n bare_a to_o those_o lesser_a truth_n which_o they_o be_v bring_v to_o establish_v and_o here_o for_o to_o put_v a_o period_n to_o this_o part_n of_o my_o discourse_n it_o will_v be_v very_o useful_a to_o observe_v the_o different_a way_n of_o proceed_v for_o the_o establish_n and_o promote_a a_o religion_n institute_v by_o man_n and_o a_o religion_n who_o author_n be_v god_n this_o i_o find_v very_o well_o note_v to_o my_o hand_n in_o a_o learned_a writer_n of_o the_o jewish_a nation_n who_o i_o have_v already_o mention_v &c_n mention_v sepher_n cosri_n part_n 1._o sect_n 80_o &c_n &c_n when_o man_n say_v he_o make_v law_n and_o settle_v a_o religion_n who_o original_a be_v from_o their_o own_o mind_n and_o devise_v by_o themselves_o though_o they_o may_v pretend_v that_o it_o come_v from_o god_n yet_o they_o be_v not_o able_a to_o make_v it_o take_v place_n without_o the_o power_n of_o the_o sword_n or_o the_o countenance_n and_o assistance_n of_o some_o prince_n who_o by_o his_o authority_n shall_v cause_v it_o to_o be_v receive_v but_o a_o religion_n that_o be_v indeed_o divine_a be_v plant_v in_o a_o divine_a manner_n when_o law_n be_v derive_v from_o god_n he_o establish_v they_o by_o his_o power_n and_o might_n and_o overaws_a man_n by_o such_o wonder_n as_o without_o any_o humane_a force_n procure_v obedience_n thus_o say_v he_o our_o religion_n begin_v when_o the_o child_n of_o israel_n be_v in_o grievous_a servitude_n and_o when_o the_o land_n promise_v to_o their_o father_n be_v in_o the_o hand_n of_o potent_a king_n god_n send_v moses_n and_o aaron_n arm_v with_o no_o power_n but_o that_o of_o work_a miracle_n change_v the_o ordinary_a and_o usual_a course_n of_o nature_n and_o inflict_v in_o a_o moment_n grievous_a plague_n upon_o the_o water_n the_o earth_n the_o air_n the_o plant_n the_o beast_n and_o the_o body_n of_o man_n throughout_o all_o the_o land_n of_o egypt_n whereby_o the_o prince_n that_o keep_v they_o in_o bondage_n be_v force_v to_o let_v they_o go_v and_o in_o their_o journey_n they_o be_v conduct_v by_o the_o guidance_n of_o a_o bright_a cloud_n and_o they_o pass_v through_o the_o sea_n and_o they_o be_v feed_v with_o manna_n in_o the_o wilderness_n xl._n year_n and_o see_v one_o miracle_n after_o another_o which_o convince_v they_o they_o ought_v to_o submit_v to_o that_o word_n of_o the_o lord_n which_o moses_n speak_v unto_o they_o to_o this_o purpose_n that_o writer_n very_o rational_o discourse_n now_o just_a as_o he_o show_v that_o moses_n prove_v his_o mission_n from_o god_n so_o i_o have_v brief_o relate_v how_o our_o saviour_n likewise_o demonstrate_v that_o he_o be_v the_o royal_a prophet_n who_o moses_n foretell_v god_n will_v send_v into_o the_o world_n in_o a_o age_n when_o they_o not_o only_o groan_v under_o the_o roman_a yoke_n but_o be_v also_o superstitious_o enthral_v to_o a_o number_n of_o rite_n and_o ceremony_n devise_v by_o their_o elder_n superad_v to_o all_o the_o burden_n of_o the_o law_n of_o moses_n and_o moreover_o grievous_o oppress_v by_o the_o devil_n as_o all_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o world_n likewise_o be_v far_o more_o than_o they_o god_n raise_v up_o a_o mighty_a salvation_n to_o they_o out_o of_o the_o house_n of_o his_o servant_n david_n our_o lord_n that_o be_v on_o a_o sudden_a appear_v as_o a_o redeemer_n and_o deliverer_n from_o the_o bondage_n in_o which_o they_o lay_v not_o with_o any_o worldly_a policy_n or_o force_n but_o mere_o with_o the_o spirit_n and_o power_n of_o god_n 1_o cor._n two_o 5._o who_o send_v a_o herald_n but_o without_o the_o power_n of_o miracle_n to_o proclaim_v his_o come_n and_o as_o soon_o as_o he_o have_v do_v cry_v his_o mouth_n be_v stop_v by_o herod_n throw_v he_o into_o prison_n our_o lord_n present_o come_v forth_o shine_v most_o glorious_o in_o the_o illustrious_a work_n that_o he_o do_v every_o where_n which_o be_v such_o as_o that_o time_n call_v for_o as_o moses_n his_o miracle_n be_v proper_a to_o the_o occasion_n and_o necessity_n of_o his_o day_n and_o some_o of_o they_o be_v very_o like_o those_o wrought_v by_o moses_n and_o other_o bear_v as_o great_a a_o resemblance_n to_o they_o as_o twin_n be_v wont_a to_o do_v to_o each_o other_o who_o lie_v together_o in_o the_o same_o womb_n he_o heal_v more_o than_o moses_n kill_v he_o turn_v their_o water_n into_o wine_n as_o moses_n do_v the_o water_n of_o the_o river_n into_o blood_n he_o walk_v upon_o the_o very_a surface_n of_o the_o sea_n and_o call_v one_o of_o his_o disciple_n to_o accompany_v he_o there_o he_o feed_v multitude_n with_o a_o little_a quantity_n of_o bread_n as_o moses_n have_v feed_v the_o israelite_n in_o the_o wilderness_n this_o he_o do_v more_o than_o once_o and_o that_o in_o a_o desert_n miraculous_o at_o all_o many_o other_o miracle_n also_o declare_v that_o he_o have_v the_o same_o power_n in_o the_o air_n that_o he_o have_v on_o the_o earth_n and_o can_v as_o easy_o have_v bring_v bread_n from_o heaven_n as_o multiply_v the_o loaf_n which_o have_v now_o fill_v so_o many_o of_o they_o the_o very_a devil_n be_v as_o subject_v to_o he_o as_o the_o mean_a creature_n in_o the_o world_n and_o he_o raise_v the_o dead_a by_o his_o powerful_a word_n which_o moses_n never_o do_v all_o which_o be_v record_v by_o the_o apostle_n to_o show_v what_o cause_n they_o have_v to_o believe_v in_o jesus_n and_o how_o his_o religion_n be_v plant_v and_o propagate_v in_o the_o world_n as_o the_o other_o wonder_n be_v record_v by_o moses_n to_o show_v with_o what_o authority_n he_o come_v and_o how_o he_o settle_v the_o israelite_n in_o the_o belief_n of_o his_o law_n and_o there_o be_v no_o more_o cause_n to_o question_v whether_o jesus_n be_v the_o son_n of_o god_n the_o lord_n of_o the_o world_n who_o come_v with_o such_o a_o spirit_n than_o there_o be_v then_o to_o doubt_v whether_o moses_n be_v his_o servant_n and_o the_o lawgiver_n of_o that_o people_n among_o who_o he_o do_v such_o wonder_n nor_o so_o much_o neither_o for_o the_o great_a his_o pretence_n be_v the_o great_a reason_n there_o be_v that_o they_o shall_v have_v be_v discountenance_v by_o such_o a_o spirit_n as_o be_v in_o he_o if_o they_o have_v not_o be_v true_a it_o be_v incredible_a that_o god_n shall_v let_v the_o world_n be_v abuse_v so_o long_o by_o so_o many_o miracle_n and_o so_o great_a that_o never_o be_v the_o like_a without_o any_o the_o least_o confutation_n and_o abuse_v by_o a_o lie_n of_o so_o dangerous_a a_o nature_n and_o so_o reproachful_a to_o his_o name_n and_o so_o direct_o opposite_a to_o his_o government_n which_o this_o person_n if_o he_o be_v a_o impostor_n and_o say_v he_o be_v his_o son_n
therefore_o we_o ought_v to_o study_v this_o place_n of_o holy_a scripture_n and_o have_v it_o much_o in_o our_o thought_n that_o so_o our_o faith_n may_v stand_v in_o the_o power_n of_o god_n for_o otherwise_o how_o shall_v we_o be_v able_a to_o follow_v the_o apostolical_a precept_n which_o will_v have_v we_o when_o we_o be_v question_v to_o render_v a_o reason_n of_o the_o hope_n that_o be_v in_o we_o 1_o pet._n three_o 15._o we_o may_v be_v able_a to_o stand_v our_o ground_n though_o we_o be_v ignorant_a of_o the_o true_a cause_n of_o belief_n but_o the_o enemy_n of_o it_o will_v look_v upon_o it_o as_o a_o foolish_a obstinacy_n if_o we_o have_v not_o so_o much_o understanding_n as_o to_o give_v some_o other_o account_n of_o our_o faith_n than_o they_o give_v for_o they_o suppose_v they_o shall_v say_v why_o be_v you_o a_o christian_n whence_o be_v it_o that_o you_o look_v for_o a_o resurrection_n a_o glorious_a body_n and_o eternal_a life_n in_o another_o world_n will_v they_o not_o think_v we_o very_o stupid_a if_o we_o can_v say_v nothing_o to_o they_o but_o that_o so_o we_o have_v be_v always_o teach_v and_o be_v resolve_v to_o believe_v will_v not_o this_o be_v as_o good_a a_o reason_n for_o they_o as_o it_o be_v for_o we_o and_o make_v we_o unworthy_a of_o the_o name_n of_o christian_n who_o know_v our_o book_n no_o better_o which_o bid_v we_o give_v and_o furnish_v we_o with_o a_o reasonable_a account_n consider_v therefore_o what_o answer_v you_o will_v shape_v to_o they_o that_o shall_v make_v such_o a_o demand_n the_o apostle_n say_v it_o be_v fit_a they_o shall_v have_v a_o reason_n what_o be_v the_o best_a that_o you_o can_v offer_v for_o their_o satisfaction_n shall_v i_o tell_v you_o the_o plain_a answer_n be_v this_o that_o jesus_n who_o religion_n we_o follow_v be_v the_o son_n of_o god_n and_o therefore_o we_o believe_v these_o thing_n because_o the_o son_n of_o god_n teach_v we_o so_o who_o can_v deceive_v we_o and_o we_o will_v afterward_o the_o marvellous_a sanctity_n of_o his_o doctrine_n and_o life_n the_o confession_n he_o make_v at_o his_o bloody_a death_n the_o glory_n of_o his_o miraculous_a work_n his_o
