gal._n 5._o 17._o 2._o the_o flesh_n lust_v against_o the_o spirit_n and_o the_o spirit_n against_o 17._o the_o flesh_n and_o these_o be_v contrary_a one_o to_o the_o other_o so_o that_o you_o can_v it_o be_v not_o thus_o with_o a_o unregenerate_a man_n sin_n take_v possession_n and_o keep_v possession_n of_o his_o heart_n the_o three_o consectary_n or_o use_n stand_v thus_o see_v the_o apostle_n say_v mortify_v that_o be_v do_v not_o only_o abstain_v from_o the_o 3_o outward_a action_n of_o sin_n but_o from_o the_o thought_n of_o the_o heart_n for_o mortification_n be_v a_o slay_v of_o the_o little_a sin_n as_o well_o as_o great_a sin_n here_o may_v a_o question_n be_v ask_v quest._n why_o man_n do_v abstain_v from_o murder_n and_o idolatry_n the_o answer_n be_v because_o god_n do_v lay_v upon_o thou_o not_o to_o entangle_v thyself_o with_o the_o thing_n of_o this_o world_n be_v it_o not_o forty_o soul_n health_n to_o keep_v it_o from_o a_o consumption_n if_o man_n will_v be_v persuade_v of_o the_o benefit_n that_o come_v by_o this_o heavenly_a mindedness_n and_o that_o it_o be_v but_o a_o change_n of_o the_o desire_n not_o to_o their_o loss_n but_o their_o great_a this_o do_v not_o so_o tie_v a_o man_n from_o the_o world_n that_o he_o must_v not_o have_v any_o thing_n to_o do_v with_o it_o but_o it_o order_v a_o man_n in_o the_o world_n it_o keep_v he_o from_o all_o inordinate_a care_n of_o the_o world_n and_o all_o inordinate_a desire_n of_o earthly_a thing_n it_o set_v all_o the_o faculty_n of_o the_o soul_n in_o order_n and_o it_o set_v the_o body_n in_o order_n now_o if_o man_n do_v but_o know_v the_o benefit_n of_o this_o change_n they_o will_v be_v more_o easy_o persuade_v to_o leave_v earthly_a mindedness_n the_o second_o motive_n to_o move_v all_o man_n to_o leave_v earthly_a thing_n mindedness_n be_v because_o there_o be_v no_o sweetness_n in_o these_o earthly_a member_n there_o be_v a_o insufficiency_n in_o they_o they_o can_v give_v any_o true_a content_n to_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o man_n and_o that_o they_o can_v do_v it_o this_o be_v clear_a by_o two_o particular_n first_o this_o arise_v from_o the_o mutability_n of_o the_o lord_n will_v be_v sure_a to_o meet_v with_o he_o and_o whip_v he_o home_o for_o it_o as_o we_o see_v in_o david_n and_o ely_n if_o david_n will_v set_v his_o heart_n upon_o absalon_n the_o lord_n will_v be_v sure_a to_o meet_v with_o his_o absalon_n above_o all_o the_o rest_n if_o ely_n will_v not_o correct_v his_o son_n but_o let_v they_o dishonour_v the_o worship_n &_o service_n of_o god_n god_n will_v correct_v they_o himself_o and_o this_o arise_v from_o the_o nature_n of_o god_n for_o god_n have_v a_o fatherly_a care_n over_o his_o child_n and_o therefore_o will_v not_o suffer_v they_o to_o soil_n themselves_o with_o the_o thing_n of_o the_o
divers_a sort_n of_o affection_n so_o there_o be_v divers_a sort_n of_o distemper_n as_o the_o affection_n of_o anger_n have_v its_o distemper_n and_o this_o be_v more_o visible_a when_o anger_n be_v go_v it_o be_v daily_o see_v and_o therefore_o be_v of_o no_o great_a difficulty_n to_o be_v discern_v there_o be_v other_o kind_n of_o affection_n which_o do_v continue_v in_o a_o man_n when_o his_o heart_n be_v habitual_o carry_v to_o a_o inordinate_a lust_n as_o to_o pride_n vainglory_n love_v of_o the_o world_n no_o such_o affection_n can_v be_v well_o discern_v while_o that_o continue_v in_o a_o man_n take_v a_o man_n that_o have_v a_o continue_a affection_n it_o be_v hard_o for_o he_o to_o discern_v it_o because_o it_o do_v with_o its_o continuance_n habitual_o corrupt_v the_o judgement_n and_o blind_a the_o reason_n and_o yet_o you_o be_v to_o labour_v to_o discern_v it_o and_o that_o you_o may_v two_o way_n first_o bring_v your_o affection_n to_o the_o rule_n and_o touchstone_n lust_n second_o that_o you_o may_v better_o know_v their_o aberration_n from_o the_o rule_n consider_v whether_o the_o affection_n have_v any_o stop_n a_o affection_n be_v like_o a_o river_n if_o you_o let_v it_o run_v without_o any_o stop_n or_o resistance_n it_o 1._o run_v quiet_o but_o if_o you_o hinder_v its_o course_n it_o run_v more_o violent_o so_o it_o be_v with_o your_o affection_n if_o you_o do_v not_o observe_v to_o know_v the_o stop_n and_o let_v of_o they_o you_o shall_v not_o observe_v the_o violence_n of_o they_o so_o well_o so_o then_o the_o first_o way_n for_o a_o man_n to_o come_v to_o know_v his_o affection_n be_v to_o observe_v they_o in_o any_o extraordinary_a accident_n if_o any_o loss_n come_v to_o a_o man_n in_o his_o estate_n or_o if_o he_o therefore_o another_o can_v better_o judge_v of_o it_o as_o a_o man_n that_o be_v sick_a of_o a_o fever_n he_o can_v judge_v aright_o of_o taste_n because_o he_o have_v lose_v the_o sense_n of_o taste_v that_o which_o be_v sweet_a may_v seem_v bitter_a unto_o he_o but_o he_o that_o be_v in_o health_n simile_n can_v judge_v of_o taste_n as_o they_o be_v therefore_o it_o be_v good_a to_o make_v as_o silver_n and_o silver_n vessel_n as_o earthen_a the_o one_o will_v serve_v for_o use_v as_o well_o as_o the_o other_o so_o in_o the_o thing_n of_o the_o world_n he_o that_o be_v strong_a in_o reason_n and_o wise_a be_v they_o represent_v to_o he_o as_o they_o be_v he_o will_v use_v a_o great_a estate_n without_o set_v his_o heart_n upon_o it_o more_o than_o if_o it_o be_v a_o mean_a one_o touch_v they_o too_o familiar_o they_o will_v burn_v &_o scorch_v we_o but_o if_o we_o use_v they_o for_o our_o necessity_n and_o so_o use_v they_o as_o if_o we_o do_v not_o we_o shall_v find_v great_a benefit_n and_o comfort_n by_o they_o this_o be_v the_o difference_n between_o earthly_a and_o spiritual_a thing_n you_o must_v have_v knowledge_n of_o these_o and_o this_o knowledge_n must_v look_v upon_o thing_n that_o be_v noble_a and_o not_o upon_o the_o rubbish_n and_o trash_n of_o the_o world_n we_o will_v choose_v the_o princpal_a stone_n for_o our_o spiritual_a building_n but_o if_o otherwise_o we_o strive_v to_o find_v contentment_n in_o the_o creature_n we_o care_v not_o how_o we_o come_v by_o they_o that_o be_v any_o rubbish_n will_v serve_v the_o turn_n to_o get_v riches_n withal_o and_o honour_n and_o preferment_n in_o the_o world_n but_o if_o ever_o you_o will_v set_v your_o affection_n straight_o pitch_v they_o upon_o god_n the_o four_o cause_n of_o inordinate_a affection_n be_v that_o 4._o confusion_n that_o rise_v in_o the_o heart_n at_o the_o first_o rise_v of_o they_o and_o they_o be_v the_o vapour_n and_o mist_n that_o blind_v the_o reason_n
