learning_n wit_n knowledge_n read_v write_n sermon_n prayer_n godliness_n policy_n valour_n strength_n riches_n honour_n birth_n beauty_n authority_n for_o god_n have_v not_o give_v such_o gift_n unto_o man_n to_o the_o end_n they_o shall_v make_v sale-ware_n of_o they_o and_o set_v they_o a_o sunshining_a to_o behold_v seek_v only_a themselves_o with_o their_o gift_n the_o vain_a praise_n of_o the_o multitude_n and_o applause_n of_o the_o people_n so_o rob_v god_n of_o his_o honour_n and_o proud_o arrogate_a to_o themselves_o that_o which_o be_v due_a unto_o god_n which_o be_v the_o praise_n of_o his_o gift_n but_o he_o have_v give_v his_o gift_n to_o a_o other_o end_n namely_o that_o we_o shall_v use_v they_o to_o his_o glory_n and_o the_o good_a of_o other_o either_o in_o church_n or_o commonwealth_n especial_o of_o those_o which_o do_v most_o concern_v us._n phila._n yet_o we_o see_v common_o man_n of_o great_a gift_n be_v most_o proud_a theol._n true_a indeed_o for_o the_o fine_a cloth_n be_v soon_o stain_v and_o as_o worm_n engender_v soon_o in_o soft_a and_o tender_a wood_n than_o in_o that_o which_o be_v more_o hard_a and_o knotty_a and_o as_o moth_n do_v breed_v soon_o in_o fine_a wool_n then_o in_o course_n flock_n even_o so_o pride_n and_o vainglory_n do_v soon_o assault_v a_o excellent_a and_o rare_a man_n in_o all_o kind_n of_o knowledge_n &_o virtue_n than_o a_o other_o of_o mean_a gift_n and_o therefore_o pride_n be_v say_v to_o spring_v out_o of_o the_o ash_n of_o all_o virtue_n for_o man_n will_v be_v proud_a because_o they_o be_v wise_a learned_a godly_a patient_a humble_a etc._n etc._n pride_n therefore_o may_v very_o fit_o be_v compare_v to_o the_o crab-stock_n spein_n which_o grow_v out_o of_o the_o root_n of_o the_o very_o best_a apple-trée_n therefore_o to_o say_v the_o truth_n this_o be_v one_o of_o the_o last_o engine_n and_o weapon_n which_o the_o devil_n use_v for_o the_o overthrow_v of_o god_n own_o child_n even_o to_o blow_v they_o up_o with_o pride_n as_o it_o be_v with_o gunpowder_n for_o as_o we_o see_v it_o come_v to_o pass_v in_o the_o siege_n of_o strong_a hold_n when_o no_o battery_n or_o force_n of_o shot_n will_v prevail_v the_o last_o remedy_n and_o policy_n be_v to_o undermine_v it_o and_o blow_v it_o up_o with_o train_n of_o gunpowder_n so_o when_o satan_n can_v no_o way_n prevail_v against_o some_o excellent_a servant_n of_o god_n his_o last_o device_n be_v to_o blow_v they_o up_o with_o pride_n as_o it_o be_v with_o gunpowder_n phila._n i_o see_v it_o be_v a_o special_a grace_n of_o god_n for_o man_n of_o great_a gift_n to_o be_v humble_a mind_v &_o he_o be_v a_o old_a man_n of_o a_o thousand_o which_o excel_v in_o gift_n do_v excel_v in_o humility_n &_o the_o more_o gift_n he_o have_v the_o more_o humble_o he_o walk_v not_o contemn_v other_o but_o esteem_v they_o better_a than_o himself_o for_o common_o we_o be_v the_o worse_a for_o god_n gift_n because_o we_o have_v not_o the_o right_a use_n of_o they_o and_o again_o because_o they_o engender_v so_o much_o proud_a flesh_n in_o we_o that_o we_o have_v need_v daily_o to_o be_v corzy_v therefore_o god_n show_v great_a favour_n &_o mercy_n to_o that_o man_n who_o he_o humble_v and_o take_v down_o by_o any_o affliction_n or_o infirmity_n whatsoever_o for_o otherwise_o it_o be_v sure_a proud_a flesh_n will_v altogether_o overgrow_v us._n theol._n you_o have_v speak_v the_o truth_n for_o the_o apostle_n 11._o himself_o confess_v that_o he_o be_v tempt_v and_o trouble_v this_o way_n &_o have_v like_a to_o have_v be_v puff_v up_o out_o of_o measure_n with_o the_o abundance_n of_o his_o revelation_n but_o that_o god_n in_o great_a mercy_n send_v he_o a_o cool_a and_o a_o rebate_a to_o wit_n a_o prick_n in_o the_o flesh_n which_o he_o call_v the_o messenger_n of_o sathan_n whereby_o the_o lord_n cure_v he_o of_o his_o pride_n and_o even_o so_o do_v he_o cure_v many_o of_o we_o of_o our_o pride_n by_o throw_v we_o to_o sathan_n leave_v we_o to_o ourselves_o and_o give_v we_o over_o to_o commit_v some_o gross_a evil_n even_o to_o fall_v down_o and_o break_v our_o neck_n and_o all_o to_o the_o end_n he_o may_v humble_v we_o tame_v we_o and_o pull_v down_o our_o pride_n which_o he_o see_v we_o be_v heartsick_a of_o it_o be_v good_a for_o we_o therefore_o to_o be_v humble_a in_o the_o abundance_n of_o grace_n that_o we_o be_v not_o proud_a of_o that_o which_o we_o have_v or_o that_o which_o we_o have_v do_v for_o humility_n in_o sin_n be_v better_a than_o pride_n in_o well_o do_v phila._n herein_o sure_o appear_v the_o great_a wisdom_n and_o mercy_n of_o god_n that_o he_o so_o gracious_o wringe_v good_a out_o of_o evil_a and_o turn_v our_o afflictious_a infirmity_n fall_n and_o
