be_v true_a which_o s._n ambrose_n write_v that_o the_o ignorance_n of_o order_n and_o manner_n whereby_o thing_n be_v to_o be_v do_v do_v much_o trouble_n and_o deface_v the_o quality_n of_o one_o slow_a from_o the_o supreme_a artificer_n god_n and_o many_o be_v enlight_v with_o his_o goodness_n and_o prevent_v with_o the_o blessing_n of_o sweetness_n yet_o be_v we_o not_o for_o that_o cause_n to_o omit_v our_o duty_n nor_o be_v the_o obligation_n of_o do_v what_o be_v in_o our_o power_n dissolve_v in_o search_v into_o his_o precept_n and_o will_n and_o such_o thing_n as_o be_v necessary_a for_o we_o to_o the_o end_n that_o we_o may_v do_v what_o be_v pleasant_a in_o his_o sight_n to_o which_o purpose_n this_o present_a method_n be_v necessary_a whereby_o we_o may_v know_v and_o be_v able_a to_o put_v in_o practice_v all_o those_o excellent_a thing_n which_o the_o holy_a scripture_n teach_v us._n nor_o let_v any_o man_n think_v it_o superfluous_a that_o we_o shall_v have_v instruction_n give_v we_o help_v to_o the_o service_n of_o god_n see_v the_o whole_a scripture_n witness_v it_o and_o the_o apostle_n express_o that_o we_o be_v god_n fellowlabourer_n 3._o 1._o cor._n 3._o but_o we_o can_v say_v that_o he_o do_v true_o or_o sufficient_o help_v that_o do_v not_o help_v so_o much_o as_o he_o can_v and_o aught_o to_o help_v nor_o be_v it_o any_o thing_n else_o for_o we_o to_o be_v helper_n unto_o god_n then_o to_o move_v the_o soul_n in_o all_o our_o work_n as_o much_o as_o we_o can_v to_o repair_v the_o grievous_a loss_n which_o sin_n have_v bring_v into_o the_o soul_n and_o pure_o to_o love_n god_n above_o all_o beside_o there_o be_v no_o cause_n why_o any_o shall_v excuse_v themselves_o in_o that_o the_o anoint_v of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n do_v teach_v all_o thing_n and_o so_o there_o shall_v be_v no_o use_n nor_o need_n of_o any_o art_n or_o method_n whereby_o to_o learn_v the_o serve_v of_o god_n for_o that_o be_v true_a but_o yet_o so_o as_o that_o we_o be_v not_o want_v unto_o the_o spirit_n and_o to_o ourselves_o in_o search_v and_o labour_v by_o all_o holy_a mean_n to_o come_v to_o that_o knowledge_n for_o the_o holy_a ghost_n teach_v not_o those_o that_o be_v altogether_o unwilling_a much_o less_o such_o as_o reluct_v and_o strive_v against_o it_o nor_o let_v any_o think_v this_o sweet_a yoke_n of_o the_o lord_n to_o be_v heavy_a in_o spend_v so_o much_o time_n to_o attain_v so_o high_a and_o heavenly_a wisdom_n whereby_o to_o use_v this_o method_n of_o serve_v god_n aright_o for_o if_o usual_o man_n spend_v three_o four_o or_o more_o year_n in_o grammar_n logic_n and_o other_o inferior_a art_n nay_o sometime_o all_o their_o life_n if_o they_o study_v to_o be_v perfect_a in_o it_o how_o much_o better_a shall_v he_o bestow_v his_o whole_a life_n to_o learn_v perfect_o this_o most_o heavenly_a art_n to_o teach_v we_o which_o our_o most_o dear_a and_o heavenly_a master_n jesus_n christ_n come_v down_o from_o heaven_n unto_o we_o and_o with_o so_o much_o labour_n and_o pain_n perform_v it_o therefore_o let_v not_o any_o be_v discourage_v in_o follow_v this_o course_n if_o he_o find_v in_o himself_o many_o disability_n for_o herein_o it_o chance_v to_o he_o as_o to_o a_o infant_n for_o he_o have_v a_o soul_n have_v not_o yet_o the_o use_n of_o reason_n and_o have_v a_o body_n foot_n and_o leg_n yet_o can_v go_v but_o when_o he_o begin_v to_o grow_v and_o to_o move_v the_o member_n of_o the_o body_n he_o can_v go_v yet_o for_o all_o that_o with_o much_o difficulty_n and_o often_o fall_v until_o increase_v in_o year_n and_o by_o continual_a exercise_n he_o go_v so_o free_o that_o when_o he_o list_v he_o can_v run_v the_o same_o thing_n fall_v out_o in_o holy_a exercise_n whilst_o one_o begin_v pure_o to_o serve_v god_n for_o albeit_o the_o soul_n be_v find_v yet_o it_o be_v so_o bind_v and_o burden_v &_o so_o without_o power_n whereby_o to_o move_v itself_o in_o this_o journey_n to_o god_n as_o the_o whole_a scripture_n declare_v that_o we_o can_v walk_v at_o all_o and_o if_o we_o be_v move_v something_o towards_o it_o yet_o it_o be_v with_o such_o difficulty_n faintness_n and_o fall_n as_o that_o our_o walk_n be_v but_o a_o very_a stand_v still_o if_o not_o rather_o a_o very_a go_v backwards_o but_o when_o we_o shall_v have_v practise_v this_o method_n and_o mean_n of_o serve_v god_n for_o some_o short_a time_n we_o shall_v grow_v to_o such_o strength_n therein_o that_o we_o shall_v do_v thing_n which_o before_o we_o dare_v not_o hope_v for_o and_o shall_v so_o run_v through_o these_o high_a and_o heavenly_a journey_n as_o that_o our_o motion_n may_v rather_o be_v call_v the_o motion_n of_o angel_n fly_v then_o of_o man_n walk_v on_o the_o earth_n and_o it_o be_v much_o to_o be_v forewarn_v that_o no_o man_n make_v any_o pretext_n or_o excuse_n of_o serve_v god_n in_o this_o ensue_a manner_n as_o content_v himself_o with_o the_o ordinary_a manner_n of_o serve_v god_n to_o be_v sufficient_a to_o bring_v he_o to_o salvation_n for_o it_o be_v the_o will_n of_o god_n even_o our_o sanctification_n 4._o 1._o thess_n 4._o and_o not_o our_o sanctification_n for_o some_o short_a time_n or_o in_o some_o one_o part_n of_o body_n or_o soul_n but_o during_o the_o whole_a life_n and_o throughout_o the_o whole_a spirit_n soul_n and_o body_n see_v then_o that_o the_o lover_n of_o the_o world_n be_v never_o satisfy_v with_o riches_n honour_n and_o pleasure_n but_o still_o wish_v and_o seek_v for_o more_o yea_o god_n command_v the_o contrary_a neither_o let_v we_o be_v content_a with_o present_a grace_n and_o virtue_n but_o labour_n for_o a_o increase_n of_o all_o grace_n and_o of_o that_o crown_n of_o glory_n which_o we_o daily_o expect_v see_v god_n so_o earnest_o desire_v that_o we_o shall_v obtain_v it_o and_o if_o so_o be_v our_o mind_n and_o appetite_n be_v not_o therefore_o set_v
impossible_a that_o ever_o any_o doctrine_n with_o his_o use_n shall_v be_v apply_v without_o the_o special_a direct_a hand_n of_o god_n now_o god_n do_v apply_v the_o doctrine_n with_o the_o use_n as_o seem_v best_a to_o his_o heavenly_a wisdom_n and_o good_a pleasure_n 2._o in_o time_n the_o holy_a spirit_n of_o god_n have_v apply_v do_v apply_v and_o unto_o the_o end_n of_o the_o world_n will_v apply_v free_o the_o doctrine_n with_o their_o use_n that_o be_v to_o who_o when_o and_o in_o what_o measure_v it_o think_v fit_a and_o that_o by_o the_o mean_n hereafter_o follow_v and_o these_o thing_n which_o i_o have_v speak_v of_o the_o application_n which_o be_v make_v by_o god_n be_v fit_o remember_v in_o the_o first_o place_n first_o because_o neither_o be_v the_o preacher_n application_n or_o hearer_n of_o any_o moment_n without_o it_o second_o because_o so_o we_o meet_v with_o a_o twofold_a error_n first_o the_o opinion_n of_o opus_fw-la operatum_fw-la that_o be_v that_o it_o suffice_v to_o go_v to_o sermon_n and_o hear_v they_o and_o that_o for_o the_o work_v sake_n god_n will_v respect_v we_o second_o the_o most_o dangerous_a opinion_n and_o persuasion_n of_o some_o hearer_n who_o think_v it_o in_o their_o power_n to_o apprehend_v wholesome_a doctrine_n and_o to_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n worthy_a thereof_o 2_o the_o preacher_n as_o the_o ambassador_n hearer_n all_o those_o thing_n in_o which_o true_a application_n consist_v of_o which_o we_o shall_v present_o speak_v second_o after_o sermon_n the_o preacher_n apply_v the_o doctrine_n with_o the_o use_n and_o that_o 1._o public_o 2._o private_o first_o public_o not_o only_o exhort_v to_o thanksgiving_n for_o the_o great_a benefit_n of_o the_o will_n of_o god_n manifest_v in_o his_o word_n unto_o we_o and_o touch_v the_o doctrine_n which_o be_v to_o his_o glory_n and_o many_o way_n to_o our_o own_o comfort_n and_o benefit_n and_o to_o the_o destruction_n of_o the_o kingdom_n of_o by_o give_v of_o thanks_n and_o call_v upon_o god_n for_o a_o blessing_n to_o give_v a_o holy_a example_n of_o they_o both_o to_o the_o hearer_n and_o second_o more_o private_o after_o the_o sermon_n the_o minister_n apply_v the_o doctrine_n with_o the_o use_n if_o by_o private_a prayer_n he_o intercede_v with_o god_n not_o only_o for_o himself_o and_o his_o family_n but_o also_o pray_v unto_o god_n for_o his_o hearer_n that_o his_o labour_n may_v not_o be_v in_o vain_a if_o by_o application_n of_o the_o doctrine_n and_o use_n he_o by_o his_o own_o example_n go_v before_o they_o and_o become_v the_o type_n of_o his_o flock_n if_o he_o diligent_o observe_v every_o a_o and_o person_n under_o his_o charge_n and_o by_o other_o do_v inquire_v of_o they_o how_o they_o carry_v themselves_o in_o the_o application_n and_o practice_n of_o the_o doctrine_n and_o use_n that_o if_o they_o do_v well_o he_o may_v stir_v they_o up_o by_o commend_v their_o godly_a care_n to_o go_v a_o joyful_a thanksgiving_n together_o with_o the_o preacher_n and_o the_o assembly_n he_o praise_v the_o name_n of_o god_n for_o his_o singular_a and_o in_o estimable_a favour_n of_o the_o revelation_n of_o his_o save_a truth_n unto_o he_o and_o by_o serious_a and_o ardent_a supplication_n entreat_v of_o god_n that_o by_o the_o work_n of_o his_o holy_a spirit_n he_o will_v be_v please_v with_o the_o use_n in_o every_o condition_n of_o life_n as_o well_o in_o adverse_a as_o prosperous_a time_n and_o that_o both_o before_o among_o and_o after_o all_o his_o action_n but_o chief_o when_o law_n by_o admonition_n and_o exhortation_n stir_v they_o up_o to_o their_o duty_n but_o if_o yet_o neither_o by_o this_o course_n of_o invitation_n and_o excitation_n any_o thing_n be_v effect_v by_o the_o godly_a christian_a magistrate_n then_o at_o length_n they_o must_v descend_v unto_o this_o mean_n that_o the_o subject_n be_v compel_v to_o the_o hear_n of_o sermous_n not_o that_o he_o may_v just_o affect_v any_o lordship_n over_o their_o conscience_n but_o first_o that_o the_o ecclesiastical_a and_o political_a discipline_n may_v be_v safe_a and_o sound_a second_o lest_o scandal_n and_o offence_n be_v give_v to_o other_o three_o that_o the_o subject_n may_v be_v judge_v concern_v the_o doctrine_n four_o that_o if_o god_n be_v so_o please_v they_o may_v be_v bring_v into_o the_o way_n of_o truth_n and_o salvation_n the_o second_o thing_n to_o be_v observe_v in_o fruitful_a hear_n of_o the_o word_n preach_v be_v the_o sound_a knowledge_n of_o the_o thing_n which_o be_v hear_v for_o it_o be_v not_o enough_o to_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n and_o salvation_n of_o man_n that_o they_o be_v present_a at_o sermon_n hear_v they_o but_o beside_o it_o be_v require_v that_o they_o do_v sound_o perceive_v and_o understand_v the_o thing_n hear_v and_o here_o as_o in_o the_o former_a duty_n i_o must_v first_o declare_v the_o nature_n of_o it_o second_o remove_v the_o impediment_n three_o show_v the_o advancement_n and_o help_n of_o it_o 1_o this_o sound_a knowledge_n and_o understanding_n of_o the_o thing_n hear_v be_v the_o second_o duty_n of_o hear_v be_v that_o whereby_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n do_v plant_v the_o thing_n hear_v in_o the_o brain_n of_o the_o hearer_n and_o so_o inform_v his_o understanding_n and_o this_o have_v his_o beginning_n from_o hear_v and_o be_v the_o foundation_n of_o the_o other_o two_o duty_n ensue_v namely_o of_o the_o right_a affection_n of_o the_o heart_n towards_o the_o thing_n hear_v and_o of_o a_o serious_a purpose_n of_o practise_v the_o thing_n understand_v and_o affect_v whence_o it_o be_v evident_a that_o this_o duty_n have_v respect_n chief_o to_o thing_n themselves_o and_o doctrine_n teach_v albeit_o the_o note_n of_o thing_n the_o use_n and_o application_n be_v not_o exclude_v from_o this_o duty_n but_o i_o do_v for_o this_o cause_n call_v this_o duty_n a_o sound_a knowledge_n and_o understanding_n of_o the_o thing_n hear_v because_o there_o be_v another_o knowledge_n very_o superficial_a and_o imperfect_a which_o deceive_v many_o man_n for_o you_o shall_v find_v many_o hearer_n who_o do_v hear_v and_o apprehend_v certain_a phrase_n or_o speech_n in_o the_o sermon_n and_o sometime_o not_o with_o a_o mind_n to_o learn_v but_o rather_o to_o cavil_n but_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n be_v not_o attentive_a to_o the_o whole_a sermon_n and_o therefore_o become_v very_o injurious_a judge_n and_o censurer_n of_o the_o sermon_n for_o see_v at_o one_o breath_n all_o can_v be_v deliver_v no_o man_n can_v right_o judge_v of_o sermon_n that_o hear_v not_o the_o whole_a nor_o do_v fond_o observe_v and_o confer_v together_o every_o member_n of_o the_o sermon_n antecedent_n and_o consequent_a beside_o some_o hearer_n there_o be_v that_o understand_v the_o principal_a head_n of_o the_o sermon_n and_o their_o member_n and_o part_n but_o regard_v not_o their_o foundation_n and_o cause_n and_o such_o do_v not_o sound_o perceive_v the_o thing_n hear_v for_o it_o suffice_v not_o to_o understand_v the_o thing_n hear_v superficial_o and_o slight_o but_o it_o be_v require_v that_o sound_o and_o fundamental_o it_o be_v understand_v together_o with_o the_o cause_n upon_o which_o it_o depend_v unto_o which_o even_o the_o knowledge_n of_o circumstance_n do_v appertain_v 2_o the_o impediment_n and_o hindrance_n must_v be_v remove_v which_o lie_n in_o the_o way_n of_o sound_o understand_v of_o sermon_n and_o they_o be_v twenty_o 1._o the_o neglect_n of_o prayer_n and_o inward_a groan_n of_o the_o spirit_n 2._o if_o the_o minister_n do_v not_o his_o duty_n in_o teach_v perspicuous_o and_o plain_o as_o also_o judicious_o and_o sound_o it_o be_v a_o great_a impediment_n for_o how_o shall_v the_o hearer_n hear_v well_o and_o learn_v aright_o if_o he_o be_v not_o teach_v aright_o sure_o the_o blind_a lead_n blind_a 3._o if_o the_o preacher_n do_v his_o duty_n yet_o if_o the_o hearer_n fail_v in_o he_o u.g._n if_o a_o holy_a preparation_n to_o the_o hear_n of_o sermon_n have_v not_o go_v before_o nor_o a_o attentive_a hear_n than_o a_o sound_a knowledge_n and_o understanding_n can_v be_v at_o all_o for_o the_o precede_a duty_n be_v the_o foundation_n of_o they_o that_o follow_v 4._o but_o chief_o it_o hinder_v the_o fruit_n of_o hear_v much_o if_o the_o hearer_n do_v nor_o understand_v the_o method_n and_o order_n of_o hear_v sermous_n which_o be_v the_o same_o with_o that_o of_o make_v sermon_n and_o be_v no_o more_o but_o this_o to_o lay_v up_o in_o memory_n the_o part_n of_o the_o division_n the_o doctrine_n of_o every_o part_n with_o their_o confirmation_n use_v and_o application_n 5._o if_o he_o come_v with_o
