captivity_n be_v apply_v to_o three_o other_o thing_n as_o type_n of_o they_o first_o to_o the_o natural_a estate_n of_o all_o man_n who_o be_v in_o spiritual_a bondage_n as_o they_o be_v in_o outward_a second_o to_o the_o captivity_n of_o the_o church_n under_o antichrist_n three_o to_o the_o servile_a condition_n which_o the_o jew_n be_v in_o now_o these_o three_o be_v not_o thing_n so_o different_a in_o nature_n that_o they_o can_v sometime_o meet_v all_o together_o in_o one_o they_o be_v but_o as_o so_o many_o several_a degree_n of_o one_o and_o the_o same_o natural_a estate_n first_o some_o be_v mere_o natural_a and_o no_o more_o as_o not_o have_v go_v so_o far_o as_o to_o defile_v themselves_o with_o the_o abomination_n of_o the_o whore_n of_o rome_n second_o other_o have_v proceed_v further_o and_o dally_v with_o that_o strumpet_n and_o go_v in_o unto_o she_o and_o have_v drink_v of_o the_o wine_n of_o her_o fornication_n three_o other_o have_v go_v further_a than_o both_o the_o former_a even_o to_o the_o execrable_a malice_n of_o the_o jew_n so_o as_o to_o hate_v and_o malign_v the_o way_n of_o christ_n as_o the_o jew_n do_v accurse_v his_o name_n at_o this_o day_n now_o whether_o we_o consider_v one_o or_o other_o of_o these_o they_o be_v all_o but_o so_o many_o several_a degree_n of_o the_o same_o estate_n of_o nature_n and_o so_o there_o be_v the_o pit_n this_o their_o estate_n may_v fit_o be_v apply_v to_o all_o man_n that_o be_v in_o the_o same_o natural_a estate_n except_v only_o the_o particular_a degree_n as_o be_v before_o express_v their_o height_n and_o excellency_n belong_v to_o they_o alone_o and_o yet_o the_o same_o promise_n in_o the_o substance_n of_o they_o do_v belong_v unto_o all_o the_o faithful_a so_o it_o be_v concern_v their_o sin_n and_o misery_n which_o lie_v upon_o they_o a_o particular_a degree_n thereof_o may_v be_v proper_a unto_o they_o but_o the_o same_o estate_n be_v common_a to_o all_o so_o then_o draw_v we_o unto_o ourselves_o that_o which_o be_v here_o speak_v of_o the_o jew_n and_o then_o the_o sum_n of_o this_o text_n be_v this_o that_o even_o as_o they_o so_o we_o be_v natural_o in_o the_o prison_n pit_n till_o we_o be_v bring_v forth_o by_o the_o blood_n of_o the_o covenant_n apply_v unto_o we_o let_v i_o explain_v the_o word_n a_o little_a and_o so_o make_v way_n for_o the_o observation_n what_o be_v mean_v by_o the_o pit_n here_o speak_v of_o so_o far_o as_o concern_v the_o jew_n it_o note_v out_o the_o present_a outward_a thraldom_n in_o which_o they_o be_v hold_v under_o the_o nation_n among_o which_o they_o live_v as_o also_o that_o spiritual_a captivity_n in_o which_o they_o lie_v be_v shut_v up_o under_o sin_n and_o unbelief_n as_o it_o be_v express_v rom._n 11.32_o and_o in_o this_o latter_a respect_n it_o be_v common_a to_o we_o with_o they_o we_o be_v all_o of_o we_o captive_n under_o the_o dominion_n of_o our_o spiritual_a enemy_n as_o well_o as_o they_o what_o be_v the_o water_n here_o speak_v of_o the_o pit_n wherein_o there_o be_v no_o water_n the_o idle_a toy_n and_o friar-like_a conceit_n about_o purgatory_n draw_v from_o hence_o i_o pass_v by_o as_o not_o worthy_a spend_v time_n about_o they_o water_n in_o scripture_n signify_v two_o thing_n sometime_o they_o signify_v affliction_n sorrow_n danger_n trouble_n and_o perplexity_n as_o we_o may_v see_v in_o psal_n 18.16_o psal_n 32.6_o and_o 69_o 1_o 2._o sometime_o again_o they_o be_v take_v in_o a_o quite_o contrary_a sense_n signify_v joy_n comfort_n and_o refresh_v as_o in_o psal_n 23.2_o isai_n 12.3_o jer._n 2.13_o where_o the_o lord_n compare_v himself_o to_o a_o fountain_n of_o live_a water_n which_o give_v plenteous_a refresh_n and_o consolation_n in_o this_o latter_a sense_n it_o be_v take_v here_o in_o this_o text_n for_o joy_n or_o comfort_n so_o that_o the_o meaning_n be_v that_o as_o the_o jew_n so_o we_o one_o and_o other_o of_o we_o we_o be_v shut_v up_o as_o prisoner_n in_o the_o dungeon_n and_o pit_n of_o the_o prison_n where_o there_o be_v no_o water_n of_o comfort_n to_o refresh_v our_o soul_n withal_o we_o may_v find_v dirt_n and_o mire_n there_o in_o which_o we_o may_v stick_v fast_o as_o jeremiah_n do_v in_o his_o prison_n but_o there_o be_v no_o water_n of_o comfort_n to_o be_v find_v there_o the_o lose_n or_o send_v forth_o of_o the_o pit_n be_v the_o deliverance_n and_o freedom_n which_o come_v by_o the_o blood_n of_o jesus_n christ_n call_v here_o the_o blood_n of_o the_o covenant_n first_o because_o it_o ratifi_v the_o covenant_n betwixt_o god_n and_o we_o as_o we_o shall_v see_v afterward_o second_o because_o the_o covenant_n direct_v we_o to_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n to_o seek_v our_o freedom_n from_o it_o etc._n etc._n thus_o have_v the_o sense_n we_o may_v in_o the_o word_n consider_v these_o two_o thing_n 1._o the_o natural_a estate_n of_o man_n set_v forth_o in_o two_o degree_n 1._o we_o be_v prisoner_n in_o the_o pit_n captives_z 2._o destitute_a of_o all_o comfort_n be_v in_o a_o pit_n wherein_o be_v no_o water_n 2._o the_o promise_n of_o deliverance_n i_o have_v loose_v that_o be_v will_v loose_v i_o will_v grant_v a_o deliverance_n and_o this_o be_v set_v forth_o first_o by_o the_o move_a cause_n namely_o god_n free_a grace_n not_o express_v but_o employ_v in_o this_o when_o it_o be_v say_v by_o thy_o covenant_n i_o will_v send_v forth_o etc._n etc._n q._n d._n by_o that_o free_a goodness_n and_o grace_n of_o i_o by_o which_o i_o first_o enter_v into_o a_o covenant_n with_o thou_o and_o for_o thou_o will_v i_o send_v thou_o deliverance_n out_o of_o this_o misery_n second_o by_o the_o merit_a cause_n of_o it_o the_o blood_n of_o the_o covenant_n the_o blood_n of_o christ_n for_o though_o the_o deliverance_n be_v free_a to_o we_o by_o free_a grace_n in_o respect_n of_o any_o thing_n do_v by_o we_o yet_o it_o be_v obtain_v for_o we_o by_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n from_o all_o together_o observe_v these_o four_o thing_n 1._o that_o we_o be_v all_o natural_o in_o a_o state_n of_o bondage_n as_o prisoner_n in_o the_o pit_n 2._o that_o so_o long_o as_o we_o continue_v in_o this_o estate_n nothing_o that_o we_o do_v enjoy_v can_v give_v we_o any_o sound_a comfort_n there_o be_v no_o water_n in_o the_o pit_n 3._o that_o though_o our_o condition_n be_v thus_o miserable_a and_o comfortless_a yet_o there_o be_v both_o freedom_n from_o this_o bondage_n and_o comfort_n to_o be_v obtain_v by_o the_o blood_n of_o the_o covenant_n in_o christ_n there_o be_v both_o a_o open_n of_o the_o prison_n â—o_o those_o that_o be_v bind_v and_o fountain_n of_o live_a water_n to_o refresh_v the_o thirsty_a soul_n 4._o that_o whatsoever_o salvation_n and_o deliverance_n god_n give_v unto_o his_o people_n in_o set_v they_o free_a from_o this_o misery_n he_o do_v it_o by_o virtue_n of_o and_o according_a to_o his_o covenant_n these_o be_v the_o sum_n of_o all_o these_o four_o point_n the_o text_n offer_v to_o our_o consideration_n all_o which_o though_o handle_v public_o and_o intend_v to_o have_v be_v publish_v with_o that_o â—hich_v now_o come_v the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n which_o he_o have_v make_v with_o we_o in_o christ_n they_o be_v not_o so_o unto_o the_o wicked_a who_o be_v not_o in_o covenant_n with_o the_o lord_n but_o to_o the_o saint_n they_o be_v in_o gen._n 33.5_o when_o jacob_n speak_v of_o his_o child_n these_o say_v he_o be_v the_o child_n which_o god_n of_o his_o grace_n have_v give_v thy_o servant_n jacob_n see_v grace_n in_o this_o so_o shall_v we_o see_v grace_n in_o every_o outward_a blessing_n we_o enjoy_v object_n but_o these_o outward_a blessing_n be_v common_a to_o good_a and_o bad_a and_o no_o man_n can_v know_v love_n or_o hatred_n by_o these_o thing_n which_o be_v before_o he_o how_o then_o may_v i_o know_v that_o god_n give_v i_o these_o thing_n out_o of_o grace_n and_o love_v answ_n 1._o if_o we_o come_v by_o they_o in_o the_o way_n of_o the_o covenant_n we_o walk_v before_o god_n in_o the_o way_n of_o holy_a obedience_n and_o dependence_n upon_o he_o it_o be_v certain_a they_o do_v then_o come_v to_o we_o as_o blessing_n and_o be_v give_v we_o by_o virtue_n of_o his_o covenant_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v that_o in_o deut._n 28.1_o 2_o 8_o 12._o if_o thou_o shall_v diligent_o observe_v the_o commandment_n of_o the_o lord_n thy_o god_n say_v moses_n then_o shall_v he_o command_v the_o blessing_n to_o come_v upon_o thou_o and_o all_o these_o blessing_n shall_v overtake_v thou_o etc._n etc._n he_o do_v not_o say_v thus_o shall_v thou_o be_v enrich_v thus_o shall_v thou_o increase_v in_o good_n etc._n etc._n but_o thus_o shall_v the_o lord_n bless_v thou_o and_o these_o unto_o we_o they_o come_v as_o a_o blessing_n the_o lord_n not_o only_o give_v the_o blessing_n itself_o but_o he_o give_v it_o as_o a_o blessing_n and_o a_o blessing_n of_o grace_n come_v through_o his_o covenant_n 2._o if_o they_o be_v as_o band_n and_o cord_n of_o love_n betwixt_o god_n and_o we_o as_o band_n to_o draw_v we_o near_o unto_o he_o and_o as_o cord_n to_o tie_v we_o fast_o unto_o he_o cause_v we_o to_o love_v he_o more_o and_o to_o honour_v he_o in_o the_o use_n of_o those_o good_a thing_n which_o we_o have_v receive_v from_o he_o doubtless_o they_o do_v then_o come_v from_o his_o grace_n towards_o we_o and_o be_v blessing_n of_o the_o covenant_n i_o have_v love_v thou_o say_v the_o lord_n in_o jer._n 31.3_o and_o with_o mercy_n have_v i_o draw_v thou_o if_o god_n draw_v we_o unto_o he_o by_o any_o mean_n there_o be_v mercy_n in_o it_o and_o there_o be_v a_o blessing_n in_o it_o take_v this_o as_o a_o rule_n for_o ever_o what_o ever_o bring_v we_o to_o god_n be_v a_o blessing_n as_o contrariwise_o whatever_o separate_v we_o from_o god_n be_v a_o curse_n and_o that_o which_o cause_v love_n come_v from_o love_n if_o these_o thing_n work_v love_n in_o our_o heart_n towards_o god_n then_o do_v they_o come_v from_o his_o love_n towards_o we_o consider_v then_o be_v our_o heart_n carry_v away_o from_o god_n by_o the_o thing_n we_o enjoy_v this_o be_v dangerous_a but_o be_v our_o heart_n thereby_o more_o draw_v and_o knit_v unto_o he_o then_o own_v they_o as_o blessing_n of_o the_o covenant_n as_o spring_v from_o the_o fountain_n of_o grace_n which_o god_n have_v open_v to_o we_o in_o christ_n 2._o see_v these_o outward_a good_a thing_n be_v give_v to_o god_n people_n by_o covenant_n as_o blessing_n and_o as_o spring_v from_o grace_n this_o must_v teach_v we_o to_o be_v content_a with_o such_o a_o measure_n of_o they_o as_o our_o father_n see_v meet_a for_o we_o though_o we_o have_v less_o in_o outward_a thing_n yet_o there_o be_v the_o same_o grace_n in_o that_o little_a as_o if_o we_o have_v a_o hundred_o fold_n sometime_o there_o be_v much_o love_n see_v in_o a_o little_a thing_n and_o so_o it_o be_v in_o these_o gift_n which_o god_n give_v to_o his_o child_n the_o gift_n may_v be_v small_a but_o the_o love_n be_v great_a from_o which_o it_o come_v this_o love_n shall_v satisfy_v whether_o the_o gift_n we_o receive_v from_o it_o be_v less_o or_o more_o as_o a_o young_a child_n which_o his_o father_n love_v tender_o though_o he_o have_v not_o so_o large_a allowance_n and_o liberal_a maintenance_n as_o his_o elder_a brother_n that_o be_v grow_v to_o year_n yet_o he_o comfort_v himself_o in_o this_o he_o say_v in_o his_o heart_n i_o know_v my_o father_n love_v i_o as_o well_o as_o any_o child_n he_o have_v and_o thus_o satisfy_v himself_o in_o his_o father_n love_n though_o his_o yearly_a allowance_n be_v not_o equal_a with_o some_o other_o so_o shall_v we_o though_o we_o have_v not_o so_o much_o wheat_n and_o wine_n and_o oil_n etc._n etc._n yet_o we_o may_v satiate_v our_o soul_n with_o the_o lord_n goodness_n jer._n 31.12_o 14._o that_o goodness_n of_o his_o be_v the_o same_o towards_o we_o in_o our_o little_a as_o if_o our_o portion_n be_v much_o more_o abundant_a and_o this_o contentation_n we_o shall_v the_o rather_o labour_v for_o because_o if_o we_o be_v not_o satisfy_v with_o that_o lesser_a portion_n which_o the_o lord_n bestow_v upon_o we_o until_o we_o abound_v it_o be_v suspicious_a and_o we_o have_v cause_n to_o doubt_v whether_o our_o contentment_n be_v not_o more_o in_o the_o gift_n then_o in_o the_o grace_n and_o love_n of_o the_o giver_n for_o if_o it_o be_v his_o love_n that_o satisfy_v we_o why_o be_v we_o not_o satisfy_v when_o we_o have_v less_o as_o if_o we_o have_v more_o if_o we_o have_v food_n and_o raiment_n have_v they_o from_o the_o gift_n of_o his_o grace_n let_v we_o therewith_o be_v content_a satisfy_v we_o with_o thy_o mercy_n say_v moses_n psal_n 90.14_o moses_n can_v be_v satisfy_v with_o mercy_n though_o he_o have_v but_o little_a else_o there_o be_v a_o satisfy_a sufficiency_n in_o it_o if_o we_o can_v but_o see_v it_o and_o relish_v it_o in_o the_o thing_n we_o enjoy_v let_v we_o make_v sure_a of_o this_o that_o what_o we_o have_v it_o may_v come_v from_o the_o hand_n of_o grace_n and_o then_o let_v we_o be_v content_v with_o it_o
