life_n they_o be_v oblige_v to_o their_o own_o trade_n which_o be_v in_o word_n to_o pretend_a grace_n but_o real_o to_o put_v our_o own_o work_n and_o righteousness_n in_o the_o room_n of_o christ_n righteousness_n as_o the_o ground_n or_o meritorious_a cause_n of_o justification_n for_o the_o grace_n give_v to_o we_o enable_v we_o to_o work_n be_v not_o christ_n righteousness_n but_o our_o own_o because_o give_v to_o we_o and_o work_v in_o we_o and_o so_o it_o be_v always_o ourselves_o and_o our_o own_o righteousness_n not_o christ_n and_o his_o righteousness_n that_o we_o rest_v upon_o a_o second_o instance_n of_o some_o folk_n that_o speak_v of_o christ_n and_o of_o attain_v life_n through_o he_o yet_o it_o be_v not_o in_o respect_n of_o his_o merit_n but_o in_o respect_n of_o his_o strength_n for_o such_o will_v say_v we_o hope_v through_o christ_n strength_n to_o come_v to_o heaven_n their_o meaning_n wherein_o be_v that_o he_o will_v help_v they_o so_o to_o repent_v and_o believe_v so_o to_o be_v holy_a and_o resist_v tentation_n as_o they_o shall_v come_v to_o heaven_n thereby_o as_o the_o deserve_a cause_n of_o their_o come_n thither_o it_o be_v true_a there_o be_v something_o right_a here_o when_o in_o its_o own_o place_n if_o whole_a christ_n be_v rest_v upon_o justification_n be_v put_v in_o the_o first_o place_n and_o his_o merit_n rest_v upon_o for_o that_o it_o be_v good_a that_o his_o strength_n be_v lean_v to_o and_o make_v use_v of_o for_o perform_v the_o duty_n of_o sanctification_n but_o when_o his_o strength_n be_v rest_v upon_o as_o the_o alone_a thing_n and_o when_o we_o look_v not_o to_o christ_n purchase_n and_o merit_n as_o the_o ground_n of_o our_o acceptation_n but_o to_o christ_n as_o enable_v we_o to_o do_v duty_n to_o the_o end_n they_o hope_v to_o be_v save_v this_o be_v the_o doctrinal_a error_n of_o the_o galatian_n who_o attribute_v justification_n to_o christ_n and_o to_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n joint_o this_o way_n ascrib_n to_o christ_n righteousness_n this_o much_o that_o it_o make_v our_o own_o righteousness_n to_o be_v accept_v as_o the_o ground_n of_o our_o justification_n before_o god_n which_o in_o some_o respect_n be_v worse_a than_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n for_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n seek_v a_o perfect_a righteousness_n but_o this_o way_n offer_v a_o imperfect_a righteousness_n and_o to_o mend_v and_o to_o eke_o out_o our_o imperfect_a righteousness_n it_o take_v in_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n but_o there_o be_v no_o such_o covenant_n or_o way_n of_o justification_n in_o scripture_n for_o god_n make_v but_o two_o covenant_n for_o man_n to_o attain_v life_n by_o one_o of_o work_n which_o be_v now_o impossible_a the_o other_o of_o grace_n by_o which_o only_o it_o be_v possible_a to_o attain_v justification_n and_o life_n this_o make_v a_o three_o covenant_n or_o contrivance_n by_o a_o mixture_n party_n of_o some_o work_n in_o we_o and_o partly_o of_o some_o grace_n in_o christ_n to_o make_v up_o what_o be_v inlake_v in_o our_o work_n and_o yet_o this_o way_n be_v very_o please_v to_o our_o nature_n and_o that_o to_o which_o we_o be_v much_o incline_v for_o justification_n for_o man_n be_v natural_o dispose_v to_o think_v that_o they_o give_v christ_n enough_o when_o they_o allow_v his_o righteousness_n to_o make_v up_o what_o be_v defective_a in_o the_o great_a intendment_n of_o it_o his_o suffering_n and_o soul-travel_n be_v undergo_v to_o procure_v justification_n to_o many_o so_o that_o if_o we_o will_v know_v what_o be_v the_o fruit_n of_o christ_n soul-travel_n here_o it_o be_v by_o his_o knowledge_n shall_v many_o be_v justify_v therefore_o rom._n 5.9_o it_o be_v attribute_v to_o his_o blood_n be_v justify_v by_o his_o blood_n we_o lay_v down_o such_o a_o way_n as_o make_v it_o possible_a to_o all_o to_o be_v justify_v and_o yet_o such_o a_o way_n as_o make_v it_o possible_a that_o none_o at_o all_o shall_v be_v justify_v for_o it_o hirg_v justification_n on_o the_o free_a will_n of_o the_o creature_n &_o so_o in_o strive_v to_o make_v grace_n broad_a than_o god_n allow_v they_o come_v to_o make_v it_o none_o at_o all_o by_o leave_v it_o on_o man_n freewill_n whether_o it_o shall_v be_v effectual_a or_o not_o but_o bless_v be_v god_n the_o covenant_n of_o god_n be_v not_o on_o these_o term_n for_o it_o be_v say_v here_o that_o by_o his_o knowledge_n he_o shall_v justify_v many_o 2._o it_o give_v we_o these_o two_o practical_a uses_n 1._o it_o show_v what_o shall_v be_v our_o intendment_n in_o our_o usemaking_a of_o christ_n death_n and_o that_o be_v that_o we_o may_v be_v justify_v and_o absolve_v by_o it_o even_o to_o make_v use_n of_o it_o for_o attain_v to_o pardon_n of_o sin_n and_o peace_n with_o god_n if_o this_o be_v over-looked_n and_o neglect_v all_o
in_o his_o justice_n and_o mercy_n they_o do_v what_o they_o can_v that_o god_n shall_v neither_o be_v just_a nor_o gracious_a but_o he_o shall_v be_v just_o in_o condemn_v they_o whether_o they_o will_v or_o not_o though_o he_o be_v not_o glorify_v in_o his_o grace_n as_o to_o they_o they_o set_v themselves_o what_o they_o can_v to_o let_v it_o yet_o in_o his_o justice_n he_o shall_v most_o certain_o be_v glorify_v o_o that_o man_n and_o woman_n believe_v how_o deep_o their_o gild_n draw_v who_o be_v find_v stand_v in_o the_o way_n of_o the_o glorify_v of_o god_n grace_n it_o will_v be_v find_v in_o some_o respect_n to_o draw_v deep_a than_o the_o gild_n of_o these_o abominable_a sin_n of_o adultery_n and_o murder_n in_o the_o day_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o yet_o many_o of_o you_o will_v be_v find_v to_o have_v do_v this_o and_o to_o have_v come_v short_a of_o righteousness_n for_o the_o 3d._a thâ—t_n be_v the_o meritorious_a cause_n take_v it_o in_o this_o doctrine_n that_o the_o meritorious_a cause_n that_o procure_v our_o justification_n and_o with_o respect_n to_o which_o god_n justify_v a_o sinner_n be_v the_o alone_a merit_n and_o satisfaction_n of_o christ_n jesus_n and_o this_o arise_v from_o the_o text_n on_o these_o two_o consideration_n 1._o because_o this_o justification_n be_v lay_v down_o as_o a_o effect_n of_o christ_n soul-travel_n and_o suffer_v and_o if_o justification_n be_v the_o proper_a and_o immediate_a effect_n of_o christ_n suffering_n then_o his_o soul-suffering_n must_v be_v the_o meritorious_a cause_n of_o it_o we_o can_v imagine_v another_o he_o purpose_v by_o his_o suffering_n for_o the_o elect_a that_o they_o shall_v by_o his_o knowledge_n be_v justify_v therefore_o they_o must_v be_v absolve_v and_o justify_v by_o his_o only_o by_o christ_n have_v we_o a_o righteousness_n that_o make_v we_o acceptable_a to_o god_n but_o his_o righteousness_n be_v we_o and_o god_n respect_v of_o we_o in_o or_o through_o it_o make_v we_o acceptable_a 2_o not_o only_o be_v his_o righteousness_n the_o meritorious_a cause_n but_o it_o be_v the_o only_a meritorious_a or_o the_o alone_a meritorious_a cause_n and_o herein_o papist_n and_o we_o differ_v they_o grant_v that_o christ_n satisfaction_n be_v the_o meritorious_a cause_n but_o remot_o only_o as_o it_o procure_v inward_a or_o inherent_a grace_n by_o which_o we_o merit_v but_o they_o will_v not_o have_v it_o to_o be_v the_o only_a meritorious_a cause_n but_o will_v needs_o have_v our_o own_o work_n to_o merit_v also_o and_o that_o proper_o whereas_o the_o prophet_n speak_v of_o justification_n as_o the_o effect_n of_o christ_n soul-travel_n only_o and_o if_o so_o then_o there_o can_v be_v no_o other_o thing_n admit_v for_o there_o can_v be_v two_o social_a or_o joint_a meritorious_a cause_n therefore_o throughout_o the_o scripture_n when_o the_o merit_n of_o justification_n be_v attribute_v to_o christ_n it_o exclude_v all_o other_o thing_n and_o be_v oppose_v to_o our_o own_o work_n which_o be_v the_o three_o thing_n 3_o then_o we_o say_v that_o christ_n righteousness_n be_v the_o meritorious_a cause_n of_o our_o justification_n as_o vvn_n from_o repentance_n or_o of_o faith_n in_o its_o exercise_n of_o conviction_n and_o challenge_n for_o sin_n of_o communion_n with_o god_n of_o the_o work_n of_o god_n spirit_n in_o the_o regenerate_v or_o of_o the_o fruit_n of_o the_o spirit_n they_o have_v not_o a_o mouth_n to_o speak_v a_o word_n of_o these_o thing_n and_o if_o they_o speak_v any_o thing_n o_o but_o it_o look_v wersh_fw-mi tasteless_a and_o thieveless_a like_o put_v they_o to_o discourse_v of_o religion_n it_o have_v no_o gust_n to_o say_v so_o it_o relish_v not_o they_o have_v no_o understanding_n of_o it_o at_o least_o that_o be_v experimental_a do_v this_o look_n like_o folk_n that_o have_v hear_v and_o receive_v the_o gospel_n let_v i_o say_v it_o the_o wisdom_n of_o this_o world_n and_o the_o knowledge_n of_o christ_n be_v far_o different_a thing_n and_o if_o some_o of_o you_o go_v that_o length_n as_o to_o get_v the_o question_n of_o the_o catechism_n which_o be_v well_o do_v in_o itself_o if_o we_o this_o object_n which_o be_v not_o a_o bare_a speculative_a knowledge_n or_o a_o mere_a historical_a faith_n but_o something_o that_o real_o act_v on_o christ_n with_o respect_n to_o his_o suffering_n 4._o the_o effect_n of_o this_o faith_n take_v hold_n on_o christ_n and_o his_o suffering_n and_o that_o be_v justification_n which_o be_v not_o the_o make_v a_o sinner_n to_o be_v just_o by_o know_v that_o you_o shall_v believe_v and_o receive_v the_o offer_n of_o christ_n in_o the_o gospel_n renunce_v your_o own_o righteousness_n and_o betake_v you_o to_o christ_n righteousness_n otherways_o you_o can_v on_o good_a ground_n expect_v to_o be_v justify_v 2._o other_o will_v set_v about_o many_o thing_n that_o be_v good_a but_o the_o work_n of_o believe_v they_o can_v never_o be_v bring_v to_o mind_n or_o own_o they_o will_v make_v a_o sort_n of_o conscience_n of_o prayer_n of_o keep_v the_o church_n of_o read_v the_o scripture_n etc._n etc._n but_o to_o give_v obedience_n to_o the_o command_n of_o believe_v they_o mind_v it_o not_o they_o can_v live_v and_o die_v without_o it_o this_o be_v the_o woeful_a and_o soul-ruining_a practice_n of_o the_o jew_n of_o old_a as_o we_o be_v tell_v rom._n 9_o they_o take_v much_o pain_n to_o come_v by_o righteousness_n but_o they_o attain_v it_o not_o because_o they_o seek_v it_o not_o by_o faith_n but_o as_o it_o be_v by_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n for_o they_o stumble_v at_o that_o stumble_a stone_n when_o they_o have_v go_v part_n of_o the_o way_n as_o it_o be_v and_o come_v to_o the_o stone_n of_o believe_v there_o they_o fall_v and_o break_v their_o neck_n hence_o there_o be_v many_o who_o promise_v heaven_n to_o themselves_o and_o think_v that_o they_o have_v do_v something_o for_o it_o who_o yet_o never_o lay_v hold_v on_o christ_n for_o their_o justification_n but_o let_v i_o tell_v you_o that_o though_o you_o can_v go_v the_o great_a length_n in_o holiness_n that_o ever_o any_o do_v since_o adam_n fall_n it_o will_v not_o avail_v you_o if_o you_o neglect_v faith_n in_o christ_n i_o say_v not_o this_o to_o dissuade_v you_o from_o the_o duty_n of_o holiness_n god_n forbid_v but_o to_o divert_v you_o from_o seek_v justification_n by_o they_o study_v the_o duty_n of_o holiness_n but_o seek_v always_o by_o any_o mean_n to_o be_v find_v in_o christ_n and_o in_o his_o righteousness_n and_o not_o in_o the_o righteousness_n of_o your_o duty_n as_o to_o your_o justification_n it_o be_v true_a none_o that_o have_v any_o tolerable_a measure_n of_o knowledge_n will_v profess_v down_o that_o give_v his_o son_n and_o of_o the_o mediator_n that_o come_v to_o buy_v and_o redeem_v elect_a sinner_n at_o so_o dear_a a_o rate_n and_o to_o take_v on_o such_o a_o weighty_a burden_n to_o ease_v they_o of_o it_o be_v there_o any_o here_o as_o we_o hope_v there_o be_v that_o know_v the_o weight_n of_o sin_n o_o but_o they_o will_v think_v much_o of_o this_o even_o of_o christ_n take_v on_o the_o burden_n of_o sin_n and_o cast_v it_o by_o have_v satisfy_v justice_n for_o it_o and_o loose_v the_o knot_n of_o the_o law_n and_o of_o the_o curse_n that_o tie_v it_o to_o they_o to_o become_v man_n be_v much_o but_o to_o bear_v the_o burden_n of_o our_o sin_n be_v more_o angel_n wonder_v at_o this_o that_o he_o who_o be_v their_o head_n shall_v become_v so_o low_a as_o to_o fist_n himself_o before_o god_n tribunal_n and_o to_o undergo_v the_o suffer_v of_o death_n and_o to_o take_v on_o the_o weighty_a burden_n of_o the_o elect_v debt_n and_o to_o satisfy_v for_o it_o if_o we_o be_v in_o a_o right_a frame_n of_o spirit_n we_o can_v not_o hear_v this_o word_n but_o it_o will_v ravish_v our_o heart_n and_o put_v we_o to_o a_o pause_n and_o holy_a nonplus_n but_o the_o most_o part_n alace_o walk_v light_o under_o the_o burden_n of_o sin_n without_o ever_o consider_v what_o christ_n have_v do_v to_o remove_v it_o from_o off_o his_o people_n nay_o i_o be_o afraid_a that_o believer_n who_o have_v ground_n to_o be_v lighten_v through_o christ_n condescend_v to_o bear_v their_o burden_n do_v not_o as_o they_o ought_v acknowledge_v he_o who_o have_v take_v the_o burden_n when_o we_o say_v faith_n be_v our_o righteousness_n and_o be_v impute_v to_o we_o for_o righteousness_n we_o be_v not_o to_o look_v on_o faith_n proper_o as_o a_o grace_n in_o we_o and_o divide_v or_o abstract_v from_o the_o object_n no_o by_o no_o mean_n but_o as_o it_o be_v a_o lay_v hold_n on_o the_o object_n it_o be_v faith_n in_o he_o that_o justify_v and_o through_o his_o knowledge_n shall_v many_o be_v justify_v because_o he_o shall_v bear_v their_o iniquity_n faith_n justify_v by_o virtue_n of_o christ_n satisfaction_n and_o as_o take_v hold_n of_o it_o faith_n do_v not_o justify_v as_o it_o be_v a_o act_n of_o grace_n in_o the_o sinner_n but_o as_o close_n with_o christ_n the_o object_n of_o it_o even_o as_o in_o the_o similitude_n we_o make_v use_v of_o before_o it_o sinner_n absolution_n and_o faith_n concurre_v as_o the_o instrumental_a cause_n in_o the_o plead_n of_o that_o defence_n whereon_o justification_n follow_v as_o a_o effect_n of_o
justification_n but_o here_o be_v a_o way_n for_o the_o most_o profane_a and_o graceless_a to_o be_v justify_v which_o we_o do_v not_o mention_v to_o foster_v profanity_n or_o a_o indifferency_n as_o to_o the_o have_v or_o want_v of_o inherent_a gâ—ace_n and_o holiness_n god_n forbid_v we_o shall_v but_o to_o hold_v out_o the_o excellency_n of_o this_o way_n of_o justification_n by_o grâ—ce_n and_o believer_n in_o he_o may_v be_v full_o assure_v of_o their_o justification_n through_o his_o impute_a righteousness_n not_o that_o which_o be_v his_o essential_a but_o cautionary_a righteousness_n therefore_o through_o in_o to_o make_v use_n of_o it_o and_o let_v god_n himself_o bless_v through_o christ_n what_o have_v be_v say_v to_o you_o to_o this_o purpose_n sermon_n lvi_o that_o be_v by_o his_o knowledge_n which_o hold_v out_o the_o instrumental_a cause_n of_o our_o justification_n it_o be_v ordinary_o so_o call_v and_o we_o see_v no_o cogent_a reason_n induce_v we_o to_o a_o change_n of_o the_o designation_n faithâ—here_o â—here_z be_v call_v knowedge_n not_o as_o if_o it_o be_v a_o bare_a speculative_a notion_n such_o as_o devil_n may_v have_v but_o because_o knowledge_n be_v a_o notable_a antecedent_n to_o faith_n and_o faith_n be_v consequent_a to_o and_o suppose_v precede_v knowledge_n as_o we_o may_v see_v rom._n 10._o how_o shall_v they_o believe_v in_o he_o of_o who_o they_o have_v not_o hear_v thus_o faith_n be_v express_v by_o knowledge_n john_n 17.3_o this_o be_v life_n eternal_a to_o know_v thou_o the_o only_a true_a god_n and_o jesus_n christ_n etc._n etc._n now_o it_o can_v be_v eternal_a life_n to_o know_v by_o a_o mere_a notional_a or_o speculative_a knowledge_n for_o several_a reprobat_fw-la man_n exceed_v many_o believer_n in_o this_o but_o it_o be_v to_o know_v so_o as_o to_o believe_v in_o god_n and_o to_o rest_v on_o the_o mediator_n for_o life_n through_o he_o as_o it_o be_v 2_o pet._n 1.3_o he_o have_v give_v unto_o we_o all_o thing_n that_o pertain_v to_o life_n and_o godliness_n through_o the_o knowledge_n of_o he_o etc._n etc._n mere_a speculative_a knowledge_n can_v be_v the_o condition_n of_o the_o promise_n for_o they_o be_v make_v to_o the_o man_n that_o believe_v which_o believe_v take_v in_o not_o only_o the_o act_n of_o the_o mind_n know_v and_o assent_v but_o of_o the_o will_n consent_v and_o close_v with_o the_o object_n know_v and_o this_o will_v be_v the_o more_o clear_a from_o these_o two_o 1._o that_o by_o knowledge_n here_o be_v mean_v that_o by_o which_o justification_n be_v make_v we_o or_o apply_v to_o we_o and_o that_o which_o entitle_v we_o to_o it_o now_o mere_a speculative_a knowledge_n do_v not_o that_o but_o it_o be_v faith_n embrace_v he_o who_o be_v make_v know_v 2._o if_o we_o compare_v that_o which_o be_v attribute_v to_o knowledge_n here_o with_o that_o which_o be_v attribute_v to_o faith_n else_o where_o rom._n 5.1_o be_v justify_v by_o faith_n we_o have_v peace_n with_o god_n and_o rom._n 3.25_o he_o be_v the_o justifier_n of_o he_o which_o believe_v in_o jesus_n we_o will_v find_v that_o what_o be_v call_v knowledge_n here_o be_v call_v faith_n there_o so_o that_o we_o may_v without_o hesitation_n take_v the_o meaning_n of_o thâ—_n word_n thus_o my_o righteous_a servant_n shall_v by_o faith_n in_o he_o justify_v many_o who_o by_o his_o bear_n of_o their_o iniquity_n shall_v be_v absolve_v and_o set_v free_a therefore_o what_o be_v speak_v of_o knowledge_n in_o the_o doctrine_n we_o may_v look_v on_o it_o as_o agree_v to_o and_o mean_v of_o faith_n we_o shall_v here_o insist_v a_o little_a on_o this_o doctrine_n which_o be_v employ_v in_o the_o word_n that_o justification_n through_o faith_n or_o the_o obtain_n of_o the_o pardon_n of_o sin_n through_o christ_n righteousness_n take_v hold_v of_o by_o faith_n do_v necessary_o presuppose_v knowledge_n in_o the_o person_n that_o may_v expect_v it_o or_o thus_o faith_n where_o it_o be_v save_v and_o such_o as_o justify_v have_v always_o knowledge_n go_v along_o with_o it_o other_o way_n faith_n can_v not_o be_v call_v knowledge_n there_o may_v be_v knowledge_n without_o faith_n but_o there_o can_v be_v no_o faith_n without_o knowledge_n and_o so_o consequent_o a_o sinner_n can_v expect_v justification_n without_o knowledge_n for_o make_v out_o of_o this_o you_o may_v consider_v these_o thing_n 1._o faith_n be_v of_o itself_o nothing_o but_o as_o it_o lay_v hold_v on_o some_o object_n how_o can_v faith_n lay_v hold_v on_o a_o object_n except_o it_o know_v it_o as_o the_o word_n be_v rom._n 10._o how_o can_v they_o believe_v except_o they_o hear_v can_v any_o person_n rest_n on_o a_o unknown_a mediator_n that_o sure_o be_v not_o faith_n but_o a_o blind_a guiss_n it_o be_v just_a as_o if_o you_o shall_v say_v that_o you_o believe_v such_o a_o thing_n when_o yet_o you_o can_v at_o all_o tell_v what_o it_o be_v which_o be_v not_o faith_n but_o as_o i_o say_v blind_a guiss_n and_o presumption_n 2._o faith_n as_o justify_v be_v always_o hold_v forth_o as_o make_v use_n of_o and_z giving_z credit_n to_o that_o which_o be_v reveal_v in_o the_o word_n hence_o we_o that_o hear_v the_o gospel_n have_v that_o reveal_v to_o we_o therein_o bind_v we_o to_o the_o belief_n of_o it_o that_o heathen_n have_v not_o as_o it_o be_v rom._n 1.17_o i_o be_o not_o ashamed_a of_o the_o gospel_n of_o christ_n for_o therein_o be_v the_o righteousness_n of_o god_n reveal_v from_o faith_n to_o faith_n where_o it_o be_v necessary_o presuppose_v that_o the_o reveal_n of_o the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o gospel_n which_o here_o comprehend_v the_o know_v of_o it_o must_v go_v before_o faith_n and_o as_o a_o person_n grow_v in_o faith_n he_o grow_v in_o the_o knowledge_n of_o it_o hence_o also_o they_o be_v say_v to_o be_v strong_a in_o faith_n who_o be_v strong_a in_o knowledge_n and_o they_o be_v say_v to_o be_v weak_a in_o knowledge_n who_o be_v weak_a in_o faith_n rom_n 14.1_o and_o 15.1_o because_o they_o know_v not_o that_o the_o cerimonial_a law_n be_v take_v away_o and_o particular_o the_o difference_n of_o meat_n and_o so_o dare_v not_o hazard_v on_o some_o thing_n which_o their_o christian_a liberty_n give_v they_o access_n to_o 3._o consider_v that_o in_o justification_n god_n will_v have_v a_o sinner_n to_o proceed_v as_o a_o man_n do_v who_o table_n his_o defence_n before_o a_o earthly_a tribunal_n of_o justice_n who_o if_o he_o plead_v well_o and_o on_o relevant_a ground_n he_o come_v the_o better_a to_o and_o as_o
