spirit_n that_o be_v by_o regeneration_n which_o alone_o make_v the_o party_n that_o be_v enter_v into_o the_o church_n by_o baptism_n to_o be_v a_o live_a member_n of_o the_o body_n of_o christ._n second_o other_o answer_v that_o this_o place_n be_v to_o be_v understand_v not_o of_o baptism_n but_o simple_o of_o regeneration_n and_o that_o christ_n allude_v to_o the_o say_n of_o the_o prophet_n which_o speak_v of_o clean_a water_n and_o expound_v the_o same_o in_o 25._o this_o sort_n thou_o nicodemus_n be_v by_o profession_n a_o pharisie_n and_o use_v many_o outward_a wash_n but_o know_v this_o withal_o that_o unless_o thou_o be_v wash_v inward_o by_o clean_a water_n that_o be_v be_v regenerate_v and_o renew_v by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n thou_o can_v not_o enter_v into_o god_n kingdom_n last_o it_o be_v answer_v that_o the_o necessity_n of_o salvation_n lie_v not_o in_o both_o but_o only_o in_o the_o new_a birth_n by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n as_o if_o christ_n shall_v say_v except_o you_o be_v regenerate_v &_o bear_v a_o new_a of_o the_o spirit_n which_o as_o clean_a water_n purge_v and_o cleanse_v you_o from_o your_o sin_n you_o can_v be_v save_v the_o use_n by_o this_o doctrine_n touch_v the_o necessity_n of_o baptism_n be_v just_o challenge_v two_o sort_n of_o man_n the_o first_o be_v the_o popish_a sort_n who_o build_v the_o absolute_a necessity_n of_o baptism_n upon_o false_a and_o unstable_a ground_n for_o they_o teach_v in_o their_o write_n that_o all_o man_n be_v bear_v in_o sin_n and_o corruption_n and_o unless_o they_o be_v cleanse_v from_o it_o they_o can_v never_o be_v save_v now_o baptism_n they_o say_v be_v appoint_v by_o god_n as_o the_o only_a remedy_n and_o sole_a mean_n whereby_o they_o may_v be_v purge_v from_o sin_n and_o come_v to_o do_v not_o wilful_o contemn_v or_o neglect_v the_o same_o when_o it_o may_v be_v have_v again_o the_o serpent_n lift_v up_o by_o moses_n in_o itself_o and_o by_o it_o own_o virtue_n be_v a_o bare_a sign_n and_o be_v no_o remedy_n to_o cure_v the_o disease_a israelite_n but_o they_o be_v cure_v by_o their_o faith_n in_o the_o word_n of_o god_n promise_v annex_v unto_o the_o sign_n according_a to_o which_o david_n say_v he_o send_v his_o word_n and_o heal_v they_o psal._n 107._o 20._o and_o to_o the_o same_o effect_n augustine_n say_v that_o the_o cure_n and_o health_n of_o the_o israelite_n come_v not_o from_o the_o serpent_n etc._n but_o from_o god_n commandment_n obey_v and_o his_o promise_n believe_v and_o so_o be_v baptism_n a_o remedy_n and_o no_o otherwise_o the_o second_o be_v the_o common_a ignorant_a sort_n of_o people_n who_o think_v that_o a_o infant_n die_v without_o baptism_n die_v without_o christendom_n and_o that_o it_o can_v possible_o be_v a_o christian_n unless_o it_o be_v baptize_v this_o their_o opinion_n be_v very_o erroneous_a for_o by_o it_o they_o make_v baptism_n the_o seal_n of_o the_o covenant_n to_o be_v as_o necessary_a as_o the_o covenant_n itself_o whereas_o on_o the_o contrary_a baptism_n be_v not_o simple_o and_o absolute_o necessary_a so_o as_o the_o party_n die_v without_o it_o can_v not_o be_v save_v but_o only_o in_o part_n as_o it_o serve_v to_o distinguish_v the_o true_a church_n from_o the_o false_a to_o be_v a_o necessary_a sign_n of_o our_o admission_n and_o entrance_n into_o the_o church_n yea_o to_o confirm_v our_o faith_n in_o the_o promise_n of_o god_n neither_o be_v baptism_n of_o force_n to_o make_v a_o christian_n but_o only_o to_o signify_v and_o declare_v a_o man_n to_o be_v a_o christian_n by_o be_v within_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n ii_o question_n whether_o witness_n which_o we_o common_o call_v godfather_n and_o godmother_n be_v necessary_a to_o this_o there_o be_v give_v two_o answer_n first_o that_o the_o use_n of_o godfather_n and_o godmother_n be_v not_o simple_o necessary_a to_o the_o sacrament_n of_o baptism_n for_o first_o it_o seem_v that_o of_o ancient_a time_n the_o parent_n of_o child_n which_o be_v heathen_a and_o new_o convert_v to_o christian_a religion_n be_v either_o ignorant_a and_o can_v not_o or_o careless_a and_o will_v not_o qualify_v the_o other_o be_v not_o of_o such_o necessity_n second_o christ_n have_v institute_v and_o ordain_v in_o his_o word_n all_o thing_n fit_v convenient_a and_o necessary_a unto_o lawful_a answer_n to_o the_o question_v propound_v namely_o that_o the_o child_n of_o such_o person_n as_o be_v excommunicate_v be_v notwithstanding_o their_o excommunication_n to_o be_v baptize_v because_o such_o infant_n belong_v to_o the_o covenant_n and_o consequent_o keep_v they_o from_o the_o sacrament_n of_o baptism_n out_o of_o this_o question_n arise_v a_o second_o whether_o child_n bear_v in_o fornication_n have_v right_a to_o baptism_n ans._n they_o be_v not_o to_o be_v keep_v from_o it_o for_o the_o wickedness_n of_o the_o parent_n ought_v not_o to_o prejudice_n the_o child_n in_o thing_n that_o belong_v to_o his_o salvation_n yet_o in_o this_o case_n some_o caution_n be_v careful_o to_o be_v obscrue_v as_o first_o that_o the_o parent_n hold_v the_o true_a faith_n and_o religion_n be_v baptize_v three_o that_o their_o be_v some_o appoint_v to_o answer_v for_o the_o infant_n beside_o the_o parent_n and_o to_o make_v solemn_a promise_n open_o to_o the_o church_n that_o it_o shall_v be_v careful_o bring_v up_o and_o instruct_v in_o the_o faith_n and_o the_o same_o be_v to_o be_v observe_v and_o practise_v before_o the_o baptise_v of_o the_o child_n of_o parent_n conceive_v the_o bow_v of_o the_o head_n and_o knee_n the_o bend_n and_o prostrate_v of_o the_o body_n the_o lift_v up_o of_o the_o hand_n eye_n and_o such_o like_a adoration_n be_v twofold_a fellow-creature_n give_v one_o to_o another_o and_o this_o as_o the_o former_a have_v in_o it_o two_o thing_n the_o one_o be_v the_o intention_n of_o he_o that_o perform_v it_o which_o must_v be_v excellent_a gift_n and_o grace_v with_o authority_n beforenamed_n here_o we_o must_v remember_v that_o the_o bow_n of_o the_o body_n etc._n etc._n and_o in_o general_a all_o bodily_a gesture_n perform_v be_v one_o and_o the_o same_o both_o in_o religious_a and_o civil_a worship_n and_o the_o distinction_n stand_v only_o in_o the_o intent_n of_o the_o mind_n sect._n 2._o now_o the_o question_n about_o adoration_n be_v two_o 1._o question_n to_o what_o thing_n be_v adoration_n due_a and_o in_o what_o manner_n ans._n we_o must_v distinguish_v the_o thing_n that_o be_v and_o they_o
