effect_n but_o it_o seem_v that_o the_o ground_n of_o this_o opinion_n in_o some_o though_o not_o in_o all_o be_v build_v upon_o this_o that_o they_o esteem_v our_o righteousness_n to_o consist_v in_o the_o very_a act_n of_o believe_a which_o may_v be_v more_o just_o say_v of_o our_o adoption_n albeit_o in_o a_o circumspect_a meaning_n chapter_n xvi_o touch_v the_o benefit_n itself_o which_o christ_n bestow_v upon_o those_o that_o receyve_v he_o although_o we_o shall_v grant_v it_o to_o be_v the_o same_o in_o sense_n which_o they_o expound_v it_o to_o be_v yet_o it_o will_v never_o jesus_n christ_n in_o which_o sense_n we_o deny_v not_o but_o this_o place_n may_v be_v commodious_o interpret_v although_o it_o seem_v that_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n do_v mean_a somewhat_o more_o be_v separate_v yet_o in_o both_o they_o be_v still_o to_o be_v distinguish_v and_o never_o to_o be_v confound_v if_o ever_o we_o think_v to_o have_v a_o clear_a and_o unconfused_a sight_n of_o these_o great_a work_n of_o grace_n which_o they_o perform_v in_o us._n now_o in_o this_o place_n the_o work_n of_o the_o father_n and_o the_o work_n of_o the_o son_n in_o our_o adoption_n be_v clear_o and_o distinct_o set_v down_o like_o as_o in_o other_o part_n the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n

our_o salvation_n neither_o can_v it_o be_v put_v in_o place_n of_o our_o salvation_n but_o we_o confess_v to_o this_o end_n that_o we_o may_v attain_v to_o salvation_n know_v that_o he_o that_o god_n therefore_o in_o god_n work_v the_o scripture_n still_o join_v these_o three_o together_o to_o wit_n grace_n christ_n and_o faith_n i'faith_o as_o the_o instrument_n whereby_o we_o apprehend_v and_o his_o obedience_n whole_o from_o our_o righteousness_n as_o likewise_o the_o law_n and_o the_o work_v thereof_o so_o they_o give_v to_o god_n the_o work_n of_o justify_v but_o the_o matter_n of_o their_o righteousness_n they_o whole_o ascribe_v to_o their_o own_o work_n and_o act_n in_o believe_v and_o place_n grace_n in_o nothing_o but_o in_o god_n gracious_a accept_n of_o man_n imperfect_a faith_n in_o place_n of_o the_o perfect_a righteousness_n of_o the_o law_n and_o attribute_n unto_o the_o merit_n of_o christ_n obedience_n this_o gracious_a acceptation_n of_o our_o grace_n give_v we_o faith_n and_o unto_o faith_n the_o gospel_n so_o that_o they_o attribute_v the_o whole_a praise_n of_o the_o justification_n unto_o god_n and_o place_n the_o whole_a matter_n of_o righteousness_n in_o the_o obedience_n of_o christ_n seclude_v all_o work_n of_o man_n either_o of_o the_o law_n or_o of_o the_o gospel_n and_o acknowledge_v the_o grace_n of_o god_n to_o be_v the_o only_a cause_n move_v god_n to_o justify_v we_o by_o christ_n obedience_n as_o likewise_o of_o the_o give_v of_o we_o faith_n to_o apprehend_v it_o and_o this_o opinion_n only_o agree_v with_o the_o truth_n chapter_n xxi_o now_o we_o come_v to_o these_o thing_n wherein_o especial_o stand_v the_o chief_a controversy_n whereby_o the_o truth_n of_o justification_n be_v most_o darken_a which_o we_o will_v reduce_v all_o to_o these_o four_o point_n the_o first_o shall_v be_v touch_v the_o efficient_a cause_n of_o justification_n the_o second_o shall_v be_v touch_v the_o material_a cause_n of_o it_o the_o three_o shall_v be_v touch_v the_o formal_a cause_n the_o four_o shall_v be_v touch_v the_o subject_n that_o be_v justify_v under_o these_o four_o be_v comprehend_v the_o chief_a controversy_n touch_v this_o matter_n for_o touch_v the_o final_a cause_n there_o be_v no_o great_a disagreement_n therefore_o we_o have_v no_o need_n to_o speak_v much_o of_o it_o yet_o notwithstanding_o because_o it_o serve_v to_o clear_v that_o which_o we_o have_v so_o much_o insist_v in_o before_o touch_v the_o order_n of_o adoption_n and_o justification_n we_o will_v speak_v something_o thereof_o after_o the_o other_o four_o first_o then_o touch_v the_o efficient_a cause_n of_o justification_n the_o controversy_n be_v only_o with_o the_o papist_n for_o in_o this_o point_n albeit_o they_o agree_v with_o we_o in_o part_n or_o rather_o in_o show_n yet_o they_o disagree_v from_o we_o in_o the_o chief_a substance_n of_o this_o question_n for_o we_o say_v that_o god_n only_o do_v justify_v but_o they_o albeit_o they_o grant_v the_o first_o justification_n to_o god_n in_o part_n yet_o they_o asscribe_v the_o second_o justification_n wherein_o they_o place_v the_o merit_n of_o eternal_a life_n whole_o to_o man_n himself_o now_o for_o discuss_v this_o controversy_n we_o have_v three_o thing_n that_o may_v sufficient_o clear_v our_o judgement_n therein_o the_o first_o be_v the_o manner_n and_o form_n of_o the_o scripture_n phrase_n touch_v the_o justification_n of_o a_o man_n the_o second_o be_v the_o testimony_n of_o the_o scripture_n declare_v who_o it_o be_v that_o
partly_o faith_n and_o partly_o christ_n obedience_n be_v the_o matter_n of_o our_o righteousness_n the_o four_o and_o last_o be_v that_o only_a christ_n in_o his_o obedience_n be_v the_o whole_a matter_n of_o our_o righteousness_n the_o vanity_n of_o the_o first_o 3._o opinion_n will_v more_o full_o appear_v when_o we_o speak_v of_o the_o formal_a cause_n of_o justification_n &_o when_o we_o shall_v treat_v of_o justification_n itself_o as_o likewise_o when_o we_o shall_v clear_v the_o truth_n of_o the_o four_o opinion_n therefore_o we_o will_v speak_v the_o more_o short_o of_o they_o now_o against_o all_o three_o this_o ground_n general_o serve_v to_o wit_n that_o no_o man_n be_v justify_v before_o god_n by_o any_o work_n inherent_a in_o himself_o or_o do_v by_o himself_o whether_o it_o be_v of_o nature_n or_o of_o grace_n or_o whether_o it_o be_v a_o work_n of_o the_o law_n or_o of_o the_o gospel_n the_o reason_n be_v if_o man_n be_v justify_v in_o any_o sort_n by_o work_n justification_n can_v not_o be_v by_o grace_n according_a as_o say_v the_o apostle_n rom._n 11._o 6._o if_o it_o be_v of_o grace_n it_o be_v no_o more_o of_o work_n else_o be_v grace_n no_o more_o grace_n and_o if_o it_o be_v of_o work_n it_o be_v no_o more_o grace_n else_o be_v work_v no_o more_o work_n thus_o none_o of_o these_o three_o foremost_a opinion_n can_v stand_v except_o we_o will_v destroy_v the_o grace_n of_o god_n and_o abolish_v it_o altogether_o from_o the_o work_n of_o justification_n for_o grace_n and_o work_n even_o though_o they_o be_v of_o grace_n can_v never_o stand_v together_o in_o the_o work_n of_o our_o justification_n which_o also_o manifest_v the_o gross_a impiety_n of_o all_o these_o three_o opinion_n in_o place_v faith_n either_o in_o whole_a or_o in_o part_n in_o our_o righteousness_n as_o it_o be_v our_o own_o work_n see_v by_o no_o work_n of_o his_o own_o can_v man_n possible_o be_v justify_v for_o otherwise_o it_o can_v be_v but_o christ_n must_v have_v die_v in_o vain_a second_o our_o righteousness_n consist_v not_o in_o god_n acceptation_n of_o any_o thing_n that_o proceed_v from_o we_o to_o godward_o but_o in_o god_n imputation_n of_o that_o that_o come_v from_o he_o to_o usward_n by_o his_o gift_n as_o be_v clear_a rom._n 5._o 15._o 16._o 17._o where_o our_o righteousness_n be_v still_o call_v the_o gift_n of_o god_n &_o we_o be_v say_v to_o receyve_v righteousness_n as_o a_o gift_n whereby_o it_o be_v most_o evident_a that_o no_o work_n of_o the_o law_n nor_o faith_n as_o it_o be_v the_o work_n of_o our_o heart_n can_v possible_o be_v our_o righteousness_n for_o our_o act_n of_o believe_a be_v a_o action_n pass_v from_o we_o to_o god-ward_o and_o be_v attribute_v as_o it_o be_v by_o they_o to_o man_n free_a will_n be_v no_o less_o the_o work_n of_o man_n than_o any_o other_o work_n of_o the_o law_n what_o soever_o but_o our_o righteousness_n be_v call_v in_o the_o scripture_n the_o righteousness_n of_o god_n and_o not_o of_o man_n because_o it_o go_v not_o from_o we_o towards_o he_o but_o it_o come_v from_o he_o to_o us._n three_o it_o be_v manifest_a by_o the_o scripture_n that_o no_o man_n be_v just_a in_o himself_o but_o in_o another_o for_o among_o man_n there_o be_v none_o righteous_a no_o not_o one_o psal_n 14._o but_o if_o that_o whereby_o he_o be_v justify_v &_o which_o be_v the_o matter_n of_o his_o righteousness_n be_v in_o himself_o he_o must_v not_o only_o be_v just_a but_o just_a in_o himself_o which_o both_o do_v plain_o contradict_v the_o truth_n of_o god_n which_o plain_o deny_v that_o there_o be_v any_o man_n righteous_a and_o that_o any_o man_n be_v make_v righteous_a in_o himself_o but_o who_o soever_o god_n justify_v he_o justify_v they_o in_o christ_n and_o make_v they_o the_o righteousness_n of_o god_n in_o he_o 2._o corinth_n 5._o 21._o four_o the_o nature_n of_o justification_n consist_v in_o the_o remission_n of_o sin_n it_o can_v not_o possible_o stand_v in_o that_o that_o be_v the_o direct_a contrary_n but_o all_o these_o three_o opinion_n make_v it_o stand_v in_o the_o contrary_a that_o be_v in_o god_n acceptation_n of_o obedience_n for_o whether_o the_o lord_n justify_v we_o for_o do_v the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n or_o for_o fulfil_v the_o condition_n of_o the_o gospel_n require_v by_o god_n of_o we_o unto_o justification_n it_o be_v always_o for_o and_o by_o our_o obedience_n that_o he_o justify_v us._n so_o that_o justification_n shall_v never_o consist_v in_o pardon_v of_o sin_n and_o cover_v of_o iniquity_n but_o by_o the_o contrary_a in_o the_o acceptation_n of_o obedience_n which_o say_v be_v so_o impious_a that_o nothing_o can_v be_v devise_v more_o contrary_a to_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n and_o man_n salvation_n these_o ground_n serve_v general_o to_o show_v the_o wickedness_n of_o all_o these_o three_o opinion_n now_o we_o come_v to_o speak_v somewhat_o concern_v the_o first_o alone_a against_o which_o these_o ground_n be_v justify_v by_o work_n he_o have_v wherein_o to_o glory_v rom._n chap._n 4._o vers_fw-la 2._o and_o the_o reason_n here_o of_o be_v declare_v in_o the_o four_o verse_n say_v that_o to_o he_o that_o work_v the_o wage_n be_v not_o count_v by_o favour_n but_o by_o debt_n whereupon_o it_o follow_v that_o if_o man_n be_v justify_v by_o work_n he_o have_v wherein_o to_o glory_v because_o he_o be_v not_o justify_v by_o grace_n but_o by_o deservinge_v and_o god_n justify_v of_o he_o be_v not_o a_o work_n of_o his_o favour_n but_o a_o work_n which_o he_o be_v indebt_v to_o do_v and_o this_o be_v the_o same_o very_a thing_n which_o the_o romish_a church_n do_v mean_a by_o their_o merit_n ex_fw-la condigno_fw-la whereby_o god_n free_a grace_n iniustification_n be_v quite_o overthrow_v in_o itself_o perfect_a righteousness_n in_o deed_n so_o that_o if_o their_o other_o ground_n can_v hold_v wherein_o also_o the_o other_o sort_n do_v agree_v with_o they_o that_o be_v that_o it_o be_v in_o man_n power_n to_o fulfil_v the_o law_n certaynlie_o they_o shall_v be_v justify_v by_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n for_o the_o doer_n of_o the_o law_n shall_v be_v justify_v rom._n 2._o 13._o and_o if_o there_o have_v be_v a_o law_n give_v which_o can_v have_v give_v life_n sure_o righteousness_n shall_v have_v be_v by_o the_o law_n say_v the_o same_o apostle_n gal._n 3._o 21._o but_o these_o other_o man_n do_v place_n their_o righteousness_n in_o that_o which_o they_o themselves_o confess_v to_o be_v imperfect_a and_o not_o to_o contain_v in_o itself_o perfect_a righteousness_n
