a_o respective_a sense_n according_a to_o the_o interpretation_n of_o the_o jew_n who_o take_v these_o without_o christ_n make_v it_o a_o kill_a letter_n even_o as_o if_o we_o shall_v the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o gospel_n without_o the_o grace_n of_o christ_n and_o certain_o if_o any_o jew_n have_v stand_v up_o and_o say_v to_o moses_n why_o do_v you_o say_v you_o give_v we_o the_o doctrine_n of_o life_n it_o be_v nothing_o but_o a_o kill_a letter_n and_o the_o ministry_n of_o death_n will_v he_o not_o have_v be_v judge_v a_o blasphemer_n against_o the_o law_n of_o moses_n the_o apostle_n therefore_o must_v understand_v it_o as_o separate_v yea_o and_o oppose_v to_o christ_n and_o his_o grace_n and_o last_o we_o be_v still_o to_o retain_v that_o distinction_n of_o the_o law_n in_o a_o more_o large_a sense_n as_o deliver_v by_o moses_n and_o a_o more_o strict_a sense_n as_o it_o consist_v in_o precept_n threaten_n and_o promise_n upon_o a_o condition_n impossible_a to_o we_o which_o be_v the_o fulfil_n of_o the_o law_n in_o a_o perfect_a manner_n lecture_n xxv_o rome_n 3._o 27._o where_o be_v boast_v then_o it_o be_v exclude_v by_o what_o law_n of_o work_n nay_o but_o of_o faith_n the_o apostle_n deliver_v in_o the_o word_n before_o most_o compendious_o and_o full_o the_o whole_a doctrine_n of_o justification_n in_o the_o open_v several_a cause_n of_o it_o from_o whence_o in_o this_o verse_n he_o infer_v a_o conclusion_n against_o all_o boast_n in_o a_o man_n self_n which_o he_o manage_v by_o short_a interrogation_n that_o so_o he_o may_v the_o more_o subdue_v that_o self_n confidence_n in_o we_o where_o be_v boast_v say_v he_o this_o be_v to_o be_v apply_v universal_o both_o to_o jew_n and_o gentile_n but_o especial_o to_o the_o jew_n who_o glory_v most_o herein_o and_o chrysostome_n make_v this_o the_o reason_n why_o christ_n defer_v so_o long_o &_o put_v off_o his_o come_n in_o the_o flesh_n viz._n that_o our_o humane_a pride_n may_v be_v debase_v for_o if_o at_o first_o he_o have_v come_v unto_o we_o man_n will_v not_o have_v find_v such_o a_o absolute_a necessity_n of_o a_o saviour_n the_o second_o question_n be_v by_o what_o law_n boast_v be_v exclude_v and_o this_o be_v answer_v first_o negative_o not_o by_o the_o law_n of_o work_n second_o positive_o by_o the_o law_n of_o faith_n the_o apostle_n by_o the_o law_n of_o work_n mean_v the_o doctrine_n of_o work_n prescribe_v they_o as_o the_o condition_n of_o our_o justification_n and_o salvation_n and_o he_o say_v work_n in_o the_o plural_a number_n because_o one_o or_o two_o good_a work_n though_o perfect_o do_v if_o that_o be_v possible_a will_v not_o satisfy_v the_o law_n for_o our_o acceptation_n unless_o there_o be_v a_o continual_a and_o universal_a practice_n of_o they_o both_o for_o part_n and_o degree_n and_o he_o call_v the_o doctrine_n of_o faith_n the_o law_n of_o faith_n either_o because_o as_o chrysostome_n say_v he_o will_v sweeten_v and_o endear_v the_o gospel_n to_o the_o jew_n by_o give_v it_o a_o name_n which_o they_o love_v or_o as_o beza_n he_o speak_v here_o mimetical_o according_a to_o the_o sense_n of_o the_o jew_n as_o when_o john_n 6._o he_o call_v faith_n a_o work_n because_o the_o jew_n ask_v what_o shall_v they_o do_v now_o we_o have_v in_o the_o scripture_n two_o lively_a comment_n upon_o both_o these_o part_n of_o the_o text._n the_o pharisee_n mention_v what_o he_o do_v reckon_v
