be_v no_o cause_n of_o salvation_n neither_o efficient_a principal_a nor_o conseruant_a nor_o yet_o material_a formal_a or_o final_a as_o have_v elsewhere_o be_v show_v the_o three_o opinion_n be_v the_o truth_n that_o good_a work_n be_v necessary_a not_o as_o cause_n of_o salvation_n or_o justification_n but_o as_o inseparable_a consequent_n of_o save_v faith_n in_o christ_n whereby_o we_o be_v justify_v and_o save_v or_o as_o a_o way_n be_v necessary_a to_o the_o go_v to_o a_o place_n the_o dignity_n of_o good_a work_n work_n be_v express_v in_o this_o that_o they_o be_v call_v good_a now_o they_o be_v good_a only_o in_o part_n not_o perfect_o as_o i_o show_v thus_o such_o as_o the_o tree_n be_v such_o be_v the_o friute_v but_o every_o one_o regenerate_v be_v partly_o spirit_n and_o partly_o flesh_n that_o be_v in_o part_n regenerate_v and_o in_o part_n natural_a and_o corrupt_a this_o be_v true_a of_o his_o mind_n will_n and_o affection_n which_o be_v the_o fountain_n of_o all_o his_o action_n and_o therefore_o the_o work_n that_o proceed_v thence_o must_v needs_o be_v answerable_a that_o be_v in_o part_n corrupt_v as_o they_o come_v from_o nature_n and_o yet_o good_a in_o part_n as_o they_o come_v from_o grace_n quest._n but_o how_o can_v god_n approve_v of_o they_o if_o they_o be_v evil_a ans._n we_o must_v consider_v good_a work_n two_o way_n first_o in_o themselves_o as_o they_o be_v compare_v with_o the_o law_n and_o the_o rigour_n thereof_o and_o so_o they_o be_v sin_n because_o they_o answer_v not_o to_o that_o perfection_n which_o the_o law_n require_v for_o there_o be_v two_o degree_n of_o sin_n rebellion_n which_o be_v action_n flat_o against_o the_o law_n and_o defect_n when_o a_o man_n do_v those_o thing_n that_o the_o law_n command_v but_o yet_o fail_v in_o the_o manner_n of_o do_v and_o so_o be_v man_n very_a best_a work_n sin_n second_o consider_v good_a work_n as_o do_v by_o a_o person_n regenerate_v and_o reconcile_v to_o god_n in_o christ_n and_o so_o god_n accept_v of_o they_o for_o in_o christ_n the_o want_v thereof_o be_v cover_v but_o here_o we_o must_v take_v heed_n of_o the_o romish_a doctrine_n â—7_n which_o teach_v that_o good_a work_n be_v so_o far_o forth_o good_a that_o there_o be_v no_o sin_n in_o they_o their_o reason_n be_v many_o to_o prove_v this_o point_n but_o they_o have_v be_v heretofore_o confute_v first_o they_o say_v good_a work_n have_v god_n for_o their_o author_n and_o therefore_o be_v perfect_o good_a answ._n this_o be_v true_a if_o he_o alone_o be_v the_o author_n of_o they_o but_o man_n be_v another_o author_n thereof_o from_o who_o they_o take_v their_o imperfection_n they_o say_v again_o that_o here_o they_o be_v call_v good_a but_o if_o they_o have_v any_o sin_n in_o they_o they_o shall_v be_v call_v evil_a for_o every_o sin_n be_v perfect_o evil_a ans._n where_o sin_n be_v unremit_v it_o be_v perfect_o evil_a but_o when_o it_o be_v pardon_v in_o our_o saviour_n doctrine_n man_n be_v bind_v to_o abstain_v from_o all_o good_a work_n answer_n that_o which_o be_v evil_a must_v not_o be_v do_v so_o far_o forth_o as_o it_o be_v evil_a now_o good_a work_n be_v not_o simple_o and_o absolute_o evil_a they_o be_v good_a in_o themselves_o and_o in_o we_o in_o part_n come_v from_o grace_n and_o therefore_o they_o must_v be_v do_v because_o god_n require_v they_o at_o our_o hand_n and_o for_o the_o imperfection_n of_o they_o we_o must_v pray_v for_o pardon_n in_o our_o saviour_n christ._n and_o here_o by_o the_o way_n we_o may_v just_o tax_v the_o proud_a doctrine_n of_o the_o papist_n who_o teach_v that_o man_n may_v be_v justify_v by_o good_a work_n when_o as_o the_o best_a work_n of_o any_o man_n in_o this_o life_n be_v taint_v with_o sin_n and_o be_v far_o unanswerable_a â—_o to_o that_o perfection_n which_o the_o law_n require_v we_o must_v be_v of_o a_o far_a other_o mind_n namely_o that_o for_o our_o best_a work_n god_n may_v just_o condemn_v we_o because_o we_o have_v not_o do_v they_o as_o we_o ought_v therefore_o christ_n bid_v we_o say_v of_o ourselves_o that_o when_o we_o have_v do_v all_o that_o we_o can_v we_o be_v god_n and_o therefore_o be_v acceptable_a they_o be_v only_o free_a in_o regard_n in_o the_o time_n of_o offer_v they_o but_o for_o the_o manner_n how_o and_o the_o place_n where_o they_o must_v be_v the_o gift_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n but_o there_o be_v no_o large_a promise_n than_o this_o in_o all_o the_o scripture_n where_o the_o gift_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n be_v promise_v to_o the_o exercise_n of_o the_o gift_n of_o prayer_n in_o faith_n which_o we_o can_v do_v by_o nature_n but_o by_o grace_n and_o beside_o when_o we_o ask_v in_o faith_n by_o grace_n this_o be_v no_o cause_n of_o the_o gift_n of_o the_o spirit_n which_o we_o receive_v but_o only_o a_o discharge_n of_o our_o duty_n in_o the_o exercise_n of_o the_o mean_n which_o god_n have_v appoint_v whereupon_o follow_v the_o increase_n of_o grace_n yet_o no_o way_n of_o our_o merit_n but_o from_o god_n free_a mercy_n and_o his_o bounty_n verse_n 12._o therefore_o whatsoever_o you_o will_v that_o man_n shall_v do_v for_o the_o profession_n and_o embrace_v of_o the_o gospel_n of_o christ_n for_o the_o world_n do_v hate_n god_n church_n and_o will_v do_v to_o the_o end_n there_o must_v be_v enmity_n between_o the_o seed_n of_o the_o serpent_n and_o the_o seed_n of_o the_o 3._o woman_n as_o than_o he_o that_o be_v bear_v of_o the_o flesh_n persecute_v he_o that_o be_v bear_v after_o the_o spirit_n so_o be_v it_o now_o gal._n 4._o 29._o second_o observe_v that_o this_o hatred_n of_o the_o world_n be_v not_o only_o against_o the_o member_n of_o god_n church_n but_o even_o against_o christ_n holy_a religion_n so_o christ_n say_v for_o my_o sake_n or_o for_o my_o religion_n sake_n this_o be_v to_o be_v mark_v as_o a_o most_o excellent_a argument_n to_o persuade_v our_o conscience_n that_o the_o gospel_n of_o christ_n which_o we_o profess_v be_v the_o true_a and_o bless_a doctrine_n of_o god_n because_o the_o wicked_a world_n do_v always_o hate_v it_o yea_o it_o hate_v we_o also_o for_o the_o gospel_n sake_n now_o if_o it_o be_v a_o doctrine_n of_o man_n it_o will_v fit_v their_o nature_n well_o and_o they_o will_v love_v it_o for_o the_o world_n do_v love_v his_o own_o joh._n 15._o 19_o three_o if_o they_o be_v bless_v that_o suffer_v persecution_n then_o how_o may_v any_o man_n lawful_o fly_v in_o persecution_n answer_n a_o man_n may_v fly_v in_o persecution_n with_o good_a conscience_n these_o two_o thing_n observe_v first_o that_o he_o be_v persecution_n not_o hinder_v by_o his_o particular_a call_n second_o that_o he_o have_v liberty_n offer_v by_o god_n providence_n in_o they_o be_v the_o fruit_n of_o justice_n god_n not_o know_v they_o they_o know_v not_o god_n and_o the_o fruit_n of_o this_o knowledge_n as_o love_v and_o give_v their_o heart_n unto_o god_n in_o their_o vain_a persuasion_n a_o three_o point_n here_o to_o be_v observe_v be_v this_o that_o such_o as_o profess_v christ_n 〈◊〉_d name_n here_o on_o earth_n &_o yet_o after_o shall_v be_v conden_v never_o have_v true_a faith_n nor_o true_a repentance_n sound_a love_n nor_o hope_n they_o may_v have_v some_o kind_n of_o faith_n i_o confess_v &_o many_o other_o excellent_a gift_n but_o repentance_n rom._n 11._o 29._o four_o here_o it_o be_v plain_a that_o those_o who_o christ_n will_v not_o save_v he_o never_o know_v hence_o it_o follow_v that_o who_o he_o know_v to_o be_v he_o they_o he_o will_v know_v to_o be_v his_o for_o ever_o this_o point_n must_v be_v remember_v because_o it_o be_v the_o true_a foundation_n and_o ground_n of_o the_o salvation_n of_o man_n soul_n we_o be_v say_v to_o be_v save_v by_o faith_n and_o by_o the_o word_n of_o god_n yet_o only_o as_o by_o mean_n not_o as_o cause_n but_o the_o only_a cause_n of_o our_o salvation_n and_o of_o the_o mean_n that_o bring_v we_o thereto_o be_v this_o knowledge_n of_o god_n whereby_o he_o accept_v and_o approve_v we_o to_o be_v his_o own_o hence_o we_o may_v gather_v that_o those_o who_o be_v elect_v unto_o salvation_n shall_v away_o never_o perish_v for_o who_o god_n once_o know_v to_o be_v his_o they_o he_o know_v to_o be_v his_o for_o ever_o &_o therefore_o mat._n 24._o 24._o it_o be_v make_v a_o terrible_a for_o if_o his_o word_n be_v thus_o powerful_a in_o his_o base_a estate_n of_o humility_n what_o force_n will_v they_o then_o have_v when_o he_o shall_v come_v in_o glory_n and_o majesty_n in_o the_o cloud_n accompany_v with_o thousand_o of_o angel_n when_o as_o his_o sight_n shall_v be_v so_o terrible_a that_o man_n shall_v call_v to_o the_o mountain_n to_o fall_v upon_o they_o and_o make_v to_o his_o disciple_n may_v be_v verify_v joh._n 14._o 12._o which_o be_v that_o they_o shall_v do_v great_a work_n than_o christ_n do_v whereof_o this_o questionless_a be_v one_o to_o convert_v more_o in_o their_o ministry_n then_o christ_n do_v and_o the_o cause_n hereof_o be_v two_o i._o that_o our_o saviour_n christ_n may_v show_v himself_o willing_a to_o undergo_v that_o base_a though_o in_o regard_n of_o his_o person_n he_o be_v the_o prophet_n of_o the_o whole_a catholic_a church_n yet_o at_o this_o time_n in_o this_o action_n he_o be_v preacher_n only_o to_o the_o church_n of_o the_o jew_n in_o which_o regard_n he_o perform_v this_o duty_n as_o man_n only_o and_o so_o can_v do_v no_o more_o but_o deliver_v his_o father_n will_n unto_o they_o and_o show_v himself_o willing_a to_o convert_v they_o and_o in_o this_o manner_n he_o speak_v unto_o jerusalem_n matth._n 23._o 37._o o_o jerusalem_n jerusalem_n how_o often_o will_v i_o have_v gather_v thy_o yet_o they_o be_v silent_a all_o that_o while_n and_o show_v no_o sign_n of_o their_o affection_n till_o the_o sermon_n be_v end_v and_o this_o good_a order_n ought_v to_o be_v observe_v of_o all_o god_n people_n in_o the_o public_a ministry_n of_o the_o word_n in_o the_o build_n of_o the_o material_a temple_n there_o be_v no_o noise_n or_o knock_v hear_v so_o much_o as_o of_o a_o hammer_n whereby_o be_v signify_v that_o in_o the_o assembly_n of_o the_o saint_n where_o god_n spiritual_a temple_n be_v building_n there_o shall_v be_v the_o like_a heavenly_a order_n observe_v man_n shall_v here_o note_v be_v the_o person_n who_o be_v thus_o astonish_v to_o wit_n the_o people_n or_o the_o multitude_n for_o after_o the_o sermon_n be_v end_v they_o gather_v themselves_o into_o company_n and_o make_v know_v one_o to_o another_o the_o affection_n of_o their_o heart_n towards_o christ_n doctrine_n hence_o we_o may_v gather_v that_o our_o saviour_n christ_n deliver_v his_o dostrine_n plain_o plain_o unto_o the_o conscience_n of_o the_o mean_a and_o to_o the_o capacity_n of_o the_o simple_a else_o they_o can_v not_o thereby_o have_v be_v bring_v to_o wonder_v and_o this_o be_v a_o
