when_o god_n have_v thus_o make_v the_o heart_n of_o man_n sensible_a he_o be_v convince_v confess_v accuse_v and_o condemn_v himself_o and_o though_o at_o the_o first_o the_o work_n begin_v with_o the_o apprehension_n and_o sense_n of_o one_o sin_n yet_o afterward_o he_o begin_v to_o see_v his_o sin_n to_o be_v many_o and_o heinous_a and_o so_o his_o condition_n to_o be_v very_o miserable_a and_o in_o this_o case_n a_o man_n may_v continue_v a_o long_o or_o a_o short_a time_n as_o it_o shall_v please_v god_n and_o this_o his_o sad_a condition_n be_v sometime_o make_v more_o sad_a by_o outward_a affliction_n or_o inward_a terror_n or_o both_o and_o all_o this_o while_n the_o sinful_a wretch_n be_v in_o danger_n of_o despair_n if_o god_n prevent_v it_o not_o by_o restrain_v satan_n rage_n who_o then_o will_v be_v very_o busy_a yet_o god_n give_v man_n no_o occasion_n to_o cast_v away_o all_o hope_n because_o he_o do_v not_o at_o the_o first_o represent_v sin_n as_o unpardonable_a but_o pardonable_a nor_o the_o punishment_n as_o unavoidable_a but_o avoidable_a some_o say_v this_o be_v do_v by_o the_o law_n and_o they_o mean_v the_o moral_a law_n discover_v unto_o man_n his_o sin_n by_o the_o precept_n and_o his_o misery_n by_o the_o commination_n but_o 1._o god_n do_v not_o use_v only_o the_o moral_a law_n but_o all_o other_o law_n or_o any_o law_n in_o force_n and_o he_o make_v use_v of_o the_o history_n of_o the_o first_o sin_n and_o â—all_n of_o man_n nay_o of_o the_o suffering_n and_o death_n of_o christ_n of_o his_o judgement_n execute_v upon_o other_o 2._o no_o man_n ought_v to_o preach_v the_o law_n of_o work_n unto_o sinful_a man_n as_o in_o force_n for_o that_o make_v sin_n unpardonable_a and_o be_v the_o high_a way_n to_o cause_n can_v break_v his_o stony_a heart_n without_o the_o spirit_n and_o power_n of_o the_o gospel_n that_o doctrine_n which_o use_v by_o god_n in_o this_o work_n be_v most_o effectual_a be_v the_o doctrine_n of_o christ_n jesus_n crucify_v for_o our_o sin_n and_o it_o must_v be_v the_o law_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o life_n that_o must_v free_v we_o from_o the_o law_n of_o sin_n and_o death_n in_o this_o sad_a condition_n §_o vi_o whilst_o man_n continue_v guilty_a and_o convict_v by_o his_o own_o conscience_n at_o the_o bar_n of_o divine_a justice_n he_o will_v begin_v to_o cast_v about_o and_o look_v on_o every_o side_n to_o see_v whether_o there_o be_v any_o help_n deliverance_n and_o hope_v of_o escape_n and_o he_o find_v nothing_o in_o himself_o nothing_o in_o any_o creature_n no_o not_o in_o angel_n to_o help_v he_o and_o so_o despair_n of_o any_o comfort_n in_o any_o thing_n except_v christ_n and_o so_o cast_v away_o all_o confidence_n in_o any_o other_o thing_n and_o with_o the_o jew_n prick_v in_o their_o heart_n cry_v out_o man_n and_o brethren_n what_o shall_v we_o do_v act_n 2._o 37._o and_o with_o the_o jailor_n sir_n what_o shall_v i_o do_v to_o be_v save_v act._n guilty_a person_n offer_v the_o sacrifice_n of_o a_o break_a heart_n and_o bruise_a spirit_n to_o the_o supreme_a judge_n and_o earnest_a suit_n be_v make_v not_o only_o for_o pardon_n of_o sin_n past_a but_o for_o power_n against_o sin_n for_o the_o time_n to_o come_v and_o though_o man_n desire_n and_o endeavour_n to_o repent_v and_o believe_v and_o quiet_a his_o mind_n in_o christ_n merit_n and_o god_n promise_n yet_o he_o can_v do_v these_o thing_n to_o purpose_n nor_o any_o man_n in_o the_o world_n can_v give_v he_o effectual_a comfort_n by_o the_o application_n of_o the_o promise_n till_o god_n put_v his_o law_n in_o his_o mind_n and_o write_v they_o in_o his_o heart_n by_o his_o divine_a spirit_n thus_o to_o do_v be_v a_o work_n of_o the_o divine_a spirit_n who_o alone_o can_v write_v immediate_o and_o imprint_v the_o divine_a precept_n and_o promise_n of_o the_o gospel_n upon_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n and_o so_o give_v he_o a_o divine_a power_n to_o repent_v to_o believe_v to_o understand_v to_o do_v the_o law_n of_o god_n and_o apply_v his_o promise_n the_o word_n now_o be_v no_o long_o only_o in_o book_n or_o in_o man_n mouth_n or_o in_o their_o ear_n but_o also_o in_o the_o heart_n yet_o it_o be_v here_o to_o be_v note_v 1._o that_o this_o great_a promise_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v not_o absolute_a as_o though_o god_n pre-required_n no_o duty_n to_o be_v perform_v by_o man_n 2._o that_o he_o do_v not_o this_o work_n without_o the_o word_n both_o teach_v hear_v and_o learned_a 3._o that_o this_o law_n be_v not_o full_o and_o perfect_o write_v in_o any_o man_n heart_n in_o this_o life_n 4._o that_o therefore_o the_o most_o illuminate_v and_o sanctify_a man_n in_o this_o life_n have_v need_n of_o the_o write_a word_n this_o be_v not_o any_o precept_n or_o promise_v of_o the_o law_n it_o be_v a_o performance_n of_o a_o promise_n upon_o some_o precept_n perform_v and_o so_o a_o act_n of_o judgement_n and_o the_o same_o not_o a_o bare_a sentence_n pronounce_v out_o of_o man_n but_o execute_v in_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n and_o not_o a_o punishment_n but_o a_o bless_a reward_n upon_o this_o follow_v another_o performance_n §_o vii_o and_o that_o be_v repentance_n and_o belief_n and_o the_o same_o of_o a_o far_o high_a degree_n than_o can_v be_v perform_v by_o any_o strength_n natural_a and_o moral_a they_o be_v divine_a and_o supernatural_a not_o perform_v by_o any_o acquire_v power_n but_o by_o a_o strength_n from_o heaven_n for_o in_o write_v these_o divine_a precept_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n god_n himself_o so_o immediate_o speak_v to_o man_n that_o he_o receive_v the_o word_n of_o god_n as_o the_o word_n of_o god_n indeed_o be_v teach_v of_o god_n draw_v to_o christ_n and_o come_v unto_o he_o never_o to_o depart_v from_o he_o again_o i_o will_v not_o deny_v but_o there_o may_v be_v some_o supernatural_a illumination_n and_o alteration_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n and_o some_o comfort_n thereupon_o
