darkness and his name shall be covered with darkness 5 Moreover he hath not seen the sun nor known any thing this hath more rest then the other 6 ¶ Yea though he live a thousand years twice told yet hath he seen no good do not all go to one place 7 All the labour of man is for his mouth and yet the †Heb. soul appetite is not filled 8 For what hath the wise more then the fool what hath the poor that knoweth to walk before the living 9 ¶ Better is the sight of the eyes †Heb. then the walking of the soul then the wandring of the desire this is also vanity and vexatioâ— of spirit 10 That which hath been is named already and it is known that it is man neither may he contend with him that is mightier then he 11 ¶ Seeing there be many things that increase vanity what is man the better 12 For who knoweth what is good for man in this life †Heb. the number of the days of the life of his vanity all the days of his vain life which he spendeth as * Ps 144.4 a shadow for who can tell a man what shall be after him under the sun CHAP. VII 1 Remedies against vanity are a good name 2 mortification 7 patients 11 wisdom 23 The difficulty of wisdom A * Prov. 25.30 22.1 Good name is better then precious ointment and the day of death then the day of ones birth 2 ¶ It is better to go to the house of mourning then to go to the house of feasting for that is the end of all men and the living will lay it to his heart 3 ‖ Or Anger Sorrow is better then laughter for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better 4 The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth 5 * Prov. 13.18 15.31.32 It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise then for a man to hear the song of fools 6 For as the †Heb. sound crackling of thorns under a pot so is the laughter of the fool this also is vanity 7 ¶ Surely oppression maketh a wise man mad * Deut. 16.19 and a gift destroyeth the heart 8 Better is the end of a thing then the beginning thereof and the patient in spirit is better then the proud in spirit 9 * Prov. 14.17 16.32 Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry for anger resteth in the bosom of fools 10 Say not thou What is the cause that the former days were better then these for thou dost not enquire †Heb. out of wisdom wisely concerning this 11 ¶ Wisdom ‖ Or as good at an inheritance yea better too is good with an inheritance and by it there is profit to them that see the sun 12 For wisdom is a †Heb. shadow defence and money is a defence but the excellency of knowledge is that wisdom giveth life to them that have it 13 Consider the work of God for * Ch. 1.15 who can make that straight which he hath made crooked 14 In the day of prosperity be joyful but in the day of adversity consider God also hath †Heb. made set the one over against the other to the end that man should finde nothing after him 15 All things have I seen in the days of my vanity there is a just man that perisheth in his righteousness and there is a wicked man that prolongeth his life in his wickedness 16 Be not righteous overmuch neither make thyself over-wise why shouldest thou †Heb. be desolate destroy thy self 17 Be not overmuch wicked neither be thou foolish why shouldest thou die †Heb. not in thy time before thy time 18 It is good that thou shouldest take hold of this yea also from this withdraw not thine hand for he that feareth God shall come forth of them all 19 * Prov. 21.22 24.5 Chap. 9.16 Wisdom strengthneth the wise more then ten mighty men which are in the city 20 * 1 King 8 46. XXXVI 1 The inconvenience of the inheritance of daughters 5 is remedied by marrying in their own tribes 7 lest the inheritance should be removed from the tribe 10 The daughters of Zelophehad marry their fathers brothers sons ANd the chief fathers of the families of the children of Gilead the son of Machir the son of Manasseh of the families of the sons of Joseph came near and spake before Moses and before the princes the chief fathers of the children of Israel 2 And they said * Ch 27 â— Jâ—â—h 17.3 The LORD commanded my lord to give the land for an inheritance by lot to the children of Israel and my lord was commanded by the LORD to give the inheritance of Zelophehad our brother unto his daughters 3 And if they be married to any of the sons of the other tribes of the children of Israel then shall their inheritance be taken from the inheritance of our fathers and shall be put to the inheritance of the tribe †Heb. unto whom they shall be whereunto they are received so shall it be taken from the lot of our inheritance 4 And when the jubile of the children of Israel shall be then shall their inheritance be put unto the inheritance of the tribe whereunto they are received so shall their inheritance be taken away from the inheritance of the tribe of our fathers 5 And Moses commanded the children of Israel according to the word of the LORD saying The tribe of the sons of Joseph hath said well 6 This is the thing which the LORD doth command concerning the daughters of Zelophehad saying let them †Heb. be wiveâ— marry to whom they think best * Tob. 1.9 onely to the family of the tribe of their father shall they marry 7 So shall not the inheritance of the children of Israel remove from tribe to tribe for every one of the children of Israel shall †Heb. cleaâ—e to the c. keep himself to the inheritance of the tribe of his fathers 8 And every daughter that possesseth an inheritance in any tribe of the children of Israel shall be wife unto one of the family of the tribe of her father that the children of Israel may enjoy every man the inheritance of his fathers 9 Neither shall the inheritance remove from one tribe to another tribe but every one of the tribes of the children of Israel shall keep himself to his own inheritance 10 Even as the LORD commanded Moses so did the daughters of Zelophehad 11 * Chap. 27.1 For Mahlah Tirzah and Hoglah and Milcah and Noah the daughters of Zelophehad were married unto their fathers brothers sons 12 And they were married †Heb. to some that were of the families into the families of the sons of Manasseh the son of Joseph and their inheritance remained in the tribe of the family of their father 13 These are the commandments and the judgements which the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses unto the children of Israel in the plains of Moab by Jordan near Jericho The fifth book of Moses called DEUTERONOMY CHAP. concubines and his wives turned away his heart 4 For it came to pass when Solomon was old that his wives turned away his heart after other gods and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God as was the heart of David his father 5 For Solomon went after * Judg. 2.13 Ashtoreth the goddess of the Zidonians and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites 6 And Solomon did evil in the sight of the LORD and †Heb. fulfilled not after went not fully after the LORD as did David his father 7 Then did Solomon build an high place for Chemosh the abomination of Moab in the hill that is before Jerusalem and for Molech the abomination of the children of Ammon 8 And likewise did he for all his strange wives which burnt incense and sacrificed unto their gods 9 ¶ And the LORD was angry with Solomon because his heart was turned from the LORD God of Israel * Ch. 3.5 9.2 which had appeared unto him twice 10 And * Ch. 6.12 had commanded him concerning this thing that he should not go after other gods but he kept not that which the LORD commanded 11 Wherefore the LORD said unto Solomon Forasmuch as this †Heb. is with thee is done of thee and thou hast not kept my covenant and my statutes which I have commanded thee * Ch. 12.15 I will surely rend the kingdom from thee and will give it to thy servant 12 Notwithstanding in thy days I will not do it for David thy fathers sake but I will rend it out of the hand of thy son 13 Howbeit I will not rend away all the kingdom but will give one tribe to thy son for David my servants sake and for Jerusalems sake which I have chosen 14 ¶ And the LORD stirred up an adversary unto Solomon Hadad the Edomite he was of the kings seed in Edom. 15 * 2 Sam. 8.14 For it came to pass when David was in Edom and Joab the captain of the host was gone up to bury the slain after he had smitten every male in Edom 16 For six moneths did Joab remain there with all Israel until he had cut off every male in Edom 17 That Hadad fled he and certain Edomites of his fathers servants with him to go into Egypt Hadad being yet a little childe 18 And they arose out of Midian and came to Paran and they took men with them out of Paran and they came to Egypt unto Pharaoh king of Egypt which gave him an house and appointed him victuals and gave him land 19 And Hadad found great favour in the sight of Pharaoh so that he gave him to wife the sister of his own wife the sister of Tahpenes the queen 20 And the sister of Tahpenes bare him Genubath his son whom Tahpenes weaned in Pharaohs house and Genubath was in Pharaohs houshold among the sons of Pharaoh 21 And when Hadad heard in Egypt that David slept with his fathers and that Joab the captain of the host was dead Hadad said to Pharaoh †Heb. II. 1 Isaiah prophesieth the coming of Christs kingdom â— Wickedness is the cause of Gods forsaking 10 He exhorteth to fear because of the powerful effect of Gods majesty THe word that Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem 2 And * Mic. 4 â— c. it shall come to pass in the last days that the mountain of the LORD house shall be ‖ Or prepared established in the top of the mountains and shall be exalted above the hills and all nations shall flow unto it 3 And many people shall go and say Come ye and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD to the house of the God of Jacob and he will teach us of his ways and we will walk in his paths for out of Zion shall go forth the law and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem 4 And he shall judge among the nations and shall rebuke many people and they shall beat their swords into plow-shares and their spears into ‖ Or sithes pruning-hooks nation shall not lift up sword against nation neither shall they learn war any more 5 O house of Jacob come ye and let us walk in the light of the LORD 6 Therefore thou hast forsaken thy people the house of Jacob because they be replenished ‖ Or more then the east from the east and are sooth-sayers like the Philistines and they ‖ Or abound with the children c. please themselves in the children of strangers 7 Their land also is full of silver and gold neither is there any end of their treasures their land is also full of horses neither is there any end of their chariots 8 Their land also is full of idols they worship the work of their own hands that which their own fingers have made 9 And the mean man boweth down and the great man humbleth himself therefore forgive them not 10 ¶ Enter into the rock and hide thee in the dust for fear of the LORD and for the glory of his majesty 11 The * Chap. 5.15 lofty looks of man shall be humbled and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day 12 For the day of the LORD of hosts shall be upon every one that is proud and lofty and upon every one that is lifted up and he shall be brought low 13 And upon all the cedars of Lebanon that are high and lifted up and upon all the oaks of Bashan 14 And upon all the high mountains and upon all the hills that are lifted up 15 And upon every high towre and upon every senced wall 16 And upon all the ships of Tarthish and upâ—n all †Heb. pictures of dâ—sire pleasant pictures 17 And the loftiness of man shall be bowed down and the haughtiness of men shall be made low and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day 18 And ‖ Or the idols shall utterly pass away the idols he shall utterly abolish 19 And they shall go into the * Hoâ— 10.8 Lu. 23.30 Rev. 6.16 9.6 holes of the rocks and into the caves of †Heb. the â—ust the earth for fear of the LORD and for the glory of his majesty when he ariseth to shake terribly the earth 20 In that day a man shall cast †Heb. the idols of his silvâ—r c. his idols of silver and his idols of gold ‖ Or which they made for him which they made each one for himself to worship to the moles and to the bats 21 To go into the clefts of the rocks and into the tops of the ragged rocks for fear of the LORD and for the glory of his majesty when he ariseth to shake terribly the earth 22 Cease ye from man whose breath is in his nostrils for wherein is he to be accounted of CHAP. Jerusalem and which see visions of peace for her and there is no peace saith the Lord GOD. 17 ¶ Likewise thou son of man set thy face against the daughters of thy people which prophesie out of their own heart and prophesie thou against them 18 And say Thus saith the Lord GOD Wo to the women that sew pillows to all ‖ Or â—hows arm-holes and make kerchiefs upon the head of every stature to hunt souls Will ye hunt the souls of my people and will ye save the souls alive that come unto you 19 And will ye pollute me among my people handfuls of barley and for pieces of bread to slay the souls that should not die and to save the souls a live that should not live by your lying to my people that hear your lies 20 Wherefore thus saith the Lord GOD Behold I am against your pillows wherewith ye there hunt the souls ‖ Or into gardens to make them flie and I will tear them from your arms and will let the souls go even the souls that ye hunt to make them flie 21 Your kerchiefs also will I tear and deliver my people out of your hand and they shall be no more in your hand to be hunted and ye shall know that I am the LORD 22 Because with lies ye have made the heart of the righteous sad whom I have not made sad and strengthned the hands of the wicked that he should not return from his wicked way ‖ Or that I shall save â—â—life †Heb. by quickâ—ing him by promising him life 23 Therefore ye shall see no more vanity nor divine divinations for I will deliver my people out of your hand and ye shall know that I am the LORD CHAP. XIV 1 God answereth idolaters according to their own hearth They are exhorted to repent for fear of judgements by means of seduced prophets 12 Gods irreâ—ocable sentence of famine 15 of notsom beasts 17 of the sword 19 and of pestilence 22 A remnant shall be reserved for example of others THen came certain of the elders of Israel unto me sat before me 2 And the word of the LORD came unto me saying 3 Son of man these men have set up their idols in their heart and put the stumbling-block of their iniquity before their face should I be enquired of at all by them 4 Therefore speak unto them and say unto them Thus saith the Lord GOD Every man of the house of Israel that setteth up his idols in his heart and putteth the stumbling-block of his iniquity before his face and cometh to the prophet I the LORD will answer him that cometh according to the multitude of his idols 5 That I may take the house of Israel in their own heart because they are all estranged from me through their idols 6 ¶ Therefore say unto the house of Israel Thus saith the Lord GOD Repent and turn ‖ Or others your selves from your idols and turn away your faces from all your abominations 7 For every one of the house of Israel or of the stranger that sojourneth in Israel which separateth himself from me and setteth up his idols in his heart and putteth the stumbling-block of his iniquity before his face and cometh to a prophet to enquire of him concerning me I the LORD will answer him by my self 8 And I will set my face against that man and will make him a * Deu 28.27 Ch. 5.15 signe and a proverb and I will cut him off from the midst of my people and ye shall know that I am the LORD 9 And if the prophet be deceived when he hath spoken a thing I the LORD * 1 Kin. 22.23 have deceived that prophet and I will stretch out my hand upon him and will destroy him from the midst of my people Israel 10 And they shall bear the punishment of their iniquity the punishment of the prophet shall be even as the punishment of him that seeketh unto him 11 That the house of Israel may go no more astray from me neither be polluted any more with all their transgressions but that they may be my people and I may be their God saith the Lord GOD. 12 ¶ The word of the LORD came again to me saying 13 Son of man when the land sinneth against me by trespassing grievously then will I stretch out mine hand upon it and will break the * Le. 25 2â— Ch. 4 1â— 5.16 staff of the bread thereof and will send famine upon it and will cut off man and beast from it 14 * Jer. 15.1 Though these three men Noah Daniel and Job were in it they should deliver but their own souls by their righteousness saith the Lord GOD. 15 ¶ It I cause noisom beasts to pass through the land and they ‖ Or here wâ—â— spoil it so that it be desolate that no man may Pass through because of the beasts 16 Though these three men were †Heb. in the midst of it in it as I live saith the Lord GOD they shall deliver neither sons nor daughters they onely shall be delivered but the land shall be desolate 17 ¶ Or if I bring a sword upon that land and say Sword go through the land so that I cut off man and beast from it 18 Though these three men were in it as I live saith the Lord GOD they shall deliver neither sons nor daughters but they onely shall be delivered themselves 19 ¶ Or if I send a pestilence into that land and pour out my fury upon it in bloud to cut off from it man and beast 20 Though Noah Daniel and Job were in it as I live faith the Lord GOD they shall deliver neither son not daughter they shall but deliver their own souls by their righteousness 21 For thus saith the Lord GOD ‖ Or Also â—â—beâ— How much more when I send my four sore judgements upon Jerusalem the sword and the famine and the noisom beast and the pestilence to cut off from it man and beast 22 ¶ Yet behold therein shall be left a remnant that shall be brought forth both sons and daughters behold they shall come forth unto you and ye shall see their way and their doings and ye shall be comforted concerning the evil that I have brought upon Jerusalem even concerning all that I have brought upon it 23 And they shall comfort you when ye see their ways and their doings and ye shall know that I have not done without cause all that I have done in it saith the Lord GOD. CHAP. XV. 3 By the unfitness of the vine-branch for any work 6 is shewed the rejection of Jerusalem ANd the word of the LORD came unto me saying 2 Son of man what is the vine-tree more then any tree or then a branch which is among the trees of the forest 3 Shall wood be taken thereof to do any work or will men take a pin of it to hang any vessel thereon 4

I. The maâ—â—sty of God in gâ—â—dness to his people and severity against his
oppress him that hath gotten the victory 46 I answered then and said This is my first and last saying That it had been better not to have given the earth unto Adam or else when it was given him to have restrained him from â—inning 47 For what profit is it for men now in this present time to live in heaviness and after death to look for punishment 48 O thou Adam what hast thou done for though it was * Rom. â— 18 thou that sinned thou art not fain alone but we all that come of thee 49 For what profit is it unto us if there be promised us an immortal time whereas we have done the works that bring death 50 And that there is promised us an everlasting hope whereas out selves being must wicked are made vain 51 And that there are laid up for us dwellings of health and safety whereas we have lived wickedly 52 And that the glory of the most High is kept to defend them which have led ‖ Or â—â—â—astâ— lise a wary life whereas we have walked in the most wicked ways of all 53 And that there should be shewed a paradise whose fruit endureth for ever wherein is ‖ Or fulness security and medicine sith we shall not enter into it 54 For we have walked in unpleasant places 55 And that the faces of them which have used abstinence shall shine above the stars whereas our faces shall be blacker then darkness 56 For while we lived and committed iniquity we considered not that we should begin to suffer for it after death 57 Then answered he me and said This is the ‖ Or intent condition of the battel which man that is born upon the earth shall fight 58 That if he be overcome he shall suffer as thou hast said but if he get the victory he shall receive the thing that I say 59 For this is the life whereof Moses spake unto the people while he lived saying * Deut. 3â— 19 Choose thee life that thou mayest live 60 Nevertheless they beleeved not him not yet the prophets after him no nor me which have spoken unto them 61 That there should not be such heaviness in their destruction as shall be joy over them that are perswaded to salvation 62 I answered then and said I know Lord that the most High is called merciful in that he hath mercy upon them which are not yet come into the world 63 And upon those also that turn to his law 64 And that * Rom. 1.4 he is patient and long suffereth those that have sinned as his creatures 65 And that he is bountiful for he is ready to give where it needeth 66 And that he is of great mercy for he multiplieth more and more mercies to them that are present and that are past and also to them which are to come 67 For if he shall not multiply his mercies the world would not continue with them that inherit therein 68 And he pardoneth for if he did not so of his goodness that they which have committed iniquities might be eased of them the ten thousandth part of men should not remain living 69 And being judge if he should not forgive them that are ‖ Or â—uâ—â—d cured with his word and put out the multitude of ‖ Or â—ontempts contentions 70 There should be very few left peradventure in an innumerable multitude CHAP. VIII 1 Many created but few saved 6 He asketh why God destroyeth his own work 26 and prayeth God to look upon the people which onely serve him 41 God answereth that all seed cometh not to good 52 and that glory is prepared for him and such like ANd he answered me saying The most High hath made this world for many but the world to come for few 2 I will tell thee a similitude Esdras As when thou askest the earth it shall say unto thee that it giveth much mold whereof earthen vessels are made but little dust that gold cometh of even so is the course of this present world 3 * Matth. â—0 16 There be many created but few shall be saved 4 So answered I and said Swallow then down O my soul understanding and devour wisdom 5 For thou hast agreed to give ear and art willing to prophesie for thou hast no songer space then onely to live 6 O Lord if thou suffer not thy servant that we may pray before thee and ‖ Or â—â—give us thou give us seed unto our heart and culture to our understanding that there may come fruit of it how shall each man live that is corrupt who beareth the place of a man 7 For thou art alone and we all one workmanship of thine hands like as thou hast said 8 For ‖ Or toâ—â— is the â—â—dy fashioned when the body is fashioned now in the mothers womb and thou givest it members thy creature is preserved in fire and water and nine moneths doth thy workmanship endure thy creature which is created in her 9 But that which keepeth and is kept shall both be preserved and when the time cometh the womb preserved delivereth up the things that grew in it 10 For thou hast commanded out of the parts of the body that into say out of the breasts milk to be given which is the fruit of the breasts 11 That the thing which is fashioned may be nourished for a time till thou disposest it to thy mercy 12 Thou broughtest it up with thy righteousness and nurturedst it in thy law and reforâ—â—â—dst it with thy judgement 13 And thou shalt mortify it as thy creature and quicken it as thy work 14 If therefore thou shalt destroy him which with so great * Job 10.8 Ps 139.14 〈◊〉 labour was fashioned it is an easie thing to be ordained by thy commandment that the thing which was made might he preserved 15 Now therefore Lord I will speak touching man in general thou knowest best but touching thy people for whose sake I am sorry 16 And for thine inheritance for whose cause I mourn and for Israel for whom I am heavy and for Jacob for whose sake I am troubled 17 Therefore will I begin to pray before thee for my self and for them for I see the falls of us that dwell in the land 18 But I have heard the swiftness of the judge which is to come 19 Therefore hear my voice and understand my words and I shall speak before thee this is the beginning of the words of Esdras before he was taken up and I said 20 O Lord thou that dwellest in everlastingness which beholdest from above things in the heaven and in the air 21 Whose throne is inestimable whose glory may not be comprehended before whom the hosts of angels stand with trembling 22 Whose service is conversant in wind and fire whose word is true and sayings constant whose commandment is strong and ordinance fearful 23 Whose look drieth up the depths and indignation maketh the mountains to melt away which
to help and for a good journey he asketh of that which cannot set a foot forward 19 And for gaining and getting and for good success of his hands asketh ability to do of him that is most â—â—â—le to do any thing CHAP. XIV 1 Though men do not pray to their ships 5 yet are they saved rather by them then by their idols 8 Idols are accursed and so are the makers of them 14 The beginning of idolatry 23 and the effects thereof 30 God will punish them that swear falsly by their idols AGain one preparing himself to sail and about to pass through the raging waves calleth upon a piece of wood more rotten then the ‖ Or ship vessel that carrieth him 2 For verily desire of gain devised ‖ Or vessel or ship that and the workman built it by his skill 3 But thy providence O Father governeth it for thou hast * Ex. 14.22 made a way in the sea and a safe path in the waves 4 Shewing that thou canst save from all danger yea though a man went to sea without art 5 Nevertheless thou wouldest not that the works of thy wisdom should be idle and therefore do men commit their lives to a small piece of wood and passing the rough sea in a weak vessel are saved 6 * Gen. 6.4 7.10 For in the old time also when the proud giants perished the hope of the world governed by thy hand escaped in a weak vessel and left to all ages a seed of generation 7 For blessed is the wood whereby righteousness cometh 8 But * Ps 115.8 Baruc. 6.4 that which is made with hands is cursed as well it as he that made it he because he made it and it because being corruptible it was called god 9 * Psal 5.5 For the ungodly and his ungodliness are both alike hateful unto God 10 For that which is made shall be punished together with him that made it 11 Therefore even ‖ Or to or by upon the idols of the Gentiles shall there be a visitation because in the creature of God they are become an abomination and * Jer. 10.8 Habak 2.18 †Gr. scandals stumbling-blocks to the souls of men and a ‖ Or trap snare to the feet of the unwise 12 For the devising of idols was the beginning of spiritual fornication and the invention of them the corruption of life 13 For neither were they from the beginning neither shall they be for ever 14 For by the vain glory of men they entred into the world and therefore shall they come shortly to an end 15 For a father afflicted with untimely mourning when he hath made an image of his childe soon taken away now honoured him as a god which was then a dead man and delivered to those that were under him ceremonies and sacrifices 16 Thus †Gr. in time in process of time an ungodly custom grown strong was kept as a saw and graven images were worshipped by the commandments of ‖ Or tyrants kings 17 Whom men could not honour ‖ Or in sight in presence because they dwelt far off they took the counterfeit of his visage from far and made an express image of a king whom they honoured to the end that by this their forwardness they might flatter him that was absent as if he were present 18 Also the singular diligence of the artificer did help to set forward the ignorant to more superstition 19 For he peradventure willing to please one in authority forced all his skill to make the resemblance †Gr. to the better of the best fashion 20 And so the multitude allured by the grace of the work took him now for a god which a little before was but honoured as a man 21 And this was an occasion to deceive the world for men serving either calamity or tyranny did ascribe unto stones and stocks the incommunicable ‖ Or of God name 22 Moreover this was not enough for them that they erred in the knowledge of God but whereas they lived in the great war of ignorance those so great plagues called they peace 23 For whilest they * Deut. 18.10 Jer. 7.9 19.4 slew their children in sacrifices or used secret ceremonies or made revellings of strange rites 24 They kept neither lives nor marriages any longer undefiled but either one slew another traiterously or grieved him by adultery 25 So that there reigned in all men ‖ Or â—onfusedly without exception bloud man-slaughter their and dissimulation corruption unfaithfulness tumults perjury 26 Disquieting of good men forgetfulness of good turns defiling of souls changing of ‖ Or six kinde disorder in marriages adultery and shameless uncleanness 27 For the worshipping of idols †Gr nanuless not to be named is the beginning the cause and the end of all evil 28 For either they are mad when they be merry or prophesie lies or live unjustly or else lightly forswear themselves 29 For insomuch as their trust is in idols which have no life though they swear falsly yet they look not to be hurt 30 Howbeit for both causes shall they be justly punished both because they thought not well of God ‖ Or devoted giving heed unto idols and also unjustly swore in deceit despising holiness 31 For it is not the power of them by whom they swear but it is the just vengeance of sinners that punisheth always the offence of the ungodly CHAP. XV. 1 We do acknowledge the true God 7 The folly of idol-makers 14 and of the enemies of Gods people 15 because besides the idols of the Gentiles 18 they worshipped vile beasts BUt thou O God art gracious and true long-suffering and in mercy ordering all things 2 For if we sin we are thine knowing thy power but we will not sin knowing that we are counted thine 3 For to know thee is perfect righteousness yea to know thy power is the root of immortality 4 For neither did the mischievous invention of men deceive us nor an image spotted with divers colours the painters fruitless labour 5 The sight whereof ‖ Or turnetha reproach to the foolish enticeth fools to lust after it and so they desire the form of a dead image that hath no breath 6 Both they that make them they that desire them and they that worship them are lovers of evil things and are worthy to have such things to trust upon 7 For the * Rom. 9.21 potter tempering soft earth fashioneth every vessel with much labour for our service yea of the same clay he maketh both the vessels that serve for clean uses and likewise also all such as serve to the contrary but what is the use of either sort the potter himself is the judge 8 And employing his labours lewdly he maketh a vain god of the same clay even he which a little before was made of earth himself and within a little while after returneth to the
we must prevent the sun to give thee thanks and at the day-spring pray unto thee 29 For the hope of the unthankfull shall melt away as the winters hoar-frost and shall run away as unprofitable water CHAP. XVII 1 Why the Egyptians were punished with darkness 4 The terrours of that darkness 11 The terrours of an ill conscience FOr great are thy judgements and cannot be expressed therefore ‖ Or souls that will not be reformed unnurtured souls have erred 2 For when unrighteous men thought to oppress the holy nation they being shut up ‖ Or under their roofs in their houses the prisoners of darkness and fettered with the bonds of a long night lay there ‖ Or fugitives exiled from the eternal providence 3 For while they supposed to lie hid in their secret sins they were scattered ‖ Or in undera dark vail of forgetfulness being horribly astonished and troubled with strange ‖ Or sights apparitions 4 For neither might the corner that held them keep them from fear but noises as of waters falling down sounded about them and sad visions appeared unto them with heavy countenances 5 No power of the fire might give them light neither could the bright flames of the stars endure to lighten that horrible night 6 Onely there appeared unto them a fire kindled of it self very dreadful for being much terrified they thought the things which they saw to be worse then the sight they saw not 7 * Ex. 7.12 8.7 19. As for the illusions of art magick they were put down and their vaunting in wisdom was reproved with disgrace 8 For they that promised to drive away terrours and troubles from a sick soul were sick themselves of fear worthy to be laughed at 9 For though no terrible thing did fear them yet being scared with beasts that passed by and hissing of serpents 10 They died for fear ‖ Or 〈◊〉 susing to look upon denying that they saw the air which could of no side be avoided 11 For wickedness condemned by her own witness is very timorous and being pressed with conscience always forecaâ—seth grievous things 12 For fear is nothing else but a betraying of the succours which reason offereth 13 And the expectation from within being less counteth the ignorance more then the cause which bringeth the torment 14 But they sleeping the same sleep that night ‖ Or wherein they could do nothing which was indeed intolerable and which came upon them out of the bottoms of inevitable hell 15 Were partly vexed with monstrous apparitions and partly fainted their heart failing them for a sudden fear and not looked for came upon them 16 So then whosoever there sell down was straitly kept shut up in a prison without iron bars 17 For whether he were husbandman or shepherd or a labourer in the ‖ Or desert field he was overtaken and endured that necessity which could not be avoided for they were all bound with one chain of darkness 18 Whether it were a whistling wind or a melodious noise of birds among the spreading branches or a pleasing fall of water running violently 19 Or a ‖ Or hideous terrible sound of stones cast down or a running that could not be seen of skipping beasts or a roaring voice of most savage wilde beasts or a rebounding eccho from the hollow mountains these things made them to swoon for fear 20 For the whole world shined with clear light and none were hindred in their labour 21 Over them onely was spread an heavy night an image of that darkness which should afterward receive them but yet were they unto themselves more grievous then the darkness CHAP. XVIII 4 Why Egypt was punished with darkness 5 and with the death of their children 18 They themselves saw the cause thereof 20 God also plagued his own people 21 By what means that plague was stayed NEvertheless thy saints had a very great * Exod. 20.23 light whose voice they hearing and not seeing their shape because they also had not suffered the same things they counted them happy 2 But for that they did not hurt them now of whom they had been wronged before they thanked them and besought them pardon for that they had been enemies 3 * Ex. 13.21 14.24 Ps 78.14 105.39 In stead whereof thou gavest them a burning pillar of fire both to be a guide of the unknown journey and an harmless sun to entertain them honourably 4 For they were worthy to be deprived of light and imprisoned in darkness who had kept thy sons shut up by whom the ‖ Or incorruptible uncorrupt light of the law was to be given unto the world 5 * Exod. 14 â—4 25. And when they had determined to slay the babes of the saints one childe being cast forth and saved to reprove them thou tookest away the multitude of their children and destroyedst them altogether in a mighty water 6 * Exod. 11.4 Of that night were our fathers certified afore that assuredly knowing unto what oaths they had given credence they might afterâ—ards be of good cheer 7 So of thy people was accepted both the salvation of the righteous and destruction of the enemies 8 For wherewith thou didst punish our adversaries by the same thou didst glorify us whom thou hadst called 9 * Exod. 10. For the righteous children of good men did sacrifice secretly and with one consent made ‖ Or a covenant of God or league See Psal 50.5 a holy law that the saints should be like partakers of the same good and evil the fathers now singing out the songs of praise 10 But on the other side there sounded an ill-according cry of the enemies and a lamentable noise was carried abroad for children that were bewailed 11 * Ex. 11.5 12.29 The master and the servant were punished after one manner and like as the king so suffered the common person 12 So they altogether had innumerable dead with one kinde of death neither were the living sufficient to bury them for in one moment the noblest offspring of them was destroyed 13 For whereas they would not beleeve any thing by reason of the inchantments upon the destruction of the first-born they acknowledged this people to be the sons of God 14 For while all things were in quiet silence and that night was in the midst of her swift course 15 Thine Almighty word leapt down from heaven out of thy royal throne as a fierce man of war into the midst of a land of destruction 16 And brought thine unfeigned commandment as a sharp sword and standing up filled all things with death and it touched the heaven but it stood upon the earth 17 Then suddenly ‖ Or imaginations visions of horrible dreams troubled them fore and terrours came upon them unlooked for 18 And one thrown here and another there half-dead shewed the cause of his death 19 For the dreams that troubled them did
and set a diadem on thine head of the glory of the Everlasting 3 For God will shew thy brightness unto every countrey under heaven 4 For thy name shall be called of God for ever The peace of righteousness and the glory of Gods worship 5 Arise O Jerusalem and stand on high and look about toward the east and behold thy children gathered from the west unto the east by the word of the holy One rejoycing in the remembrance of God 6 For they departed from thee on foot and were led away of their enemies but God bringeth them unto thee exalted with glory as children of the kingdom 7 For God hath appointed that every high hill and banks of long continuance should be cast down and valleys filled up to make even the ground that Israel may go safely in the glory of God 8 Moreover even the woods and every sweet-smelling tree shall overshadow Israel by the commandment of God 9 For God shall lead Israel I with joy in the light of his glory with the mercy and righteousness that cometh from him CHAP. VI. 1 The cause of their captivity is their sin 3 The place whereto they were carried is Babylon the vanity of whose idols and idolatry is set forth at larâ—e in this chapter ¶ A copy of an epistle which Jeremy sent unto them which were to be led captives into Babylon by the king of the Babylonians to certify them as it was commanded him of God BEcause of the sins which ye have committed before God ye shall be led away captives into Babylon by Nabuchodonosor king of the Babylonians 3 So when ye be come unto Babylon ye shall remain there many years and for a long season namely seven generations and after that I will bring you away peaceably from thence 4 * Ps 115.4 Isa 44.8 9 10. 46.5.7 Wisd 13.10 Now shall ye see in Babylon gods of silver and of gold and of wood born upon shoulders which cause the nations to fear 5 Beware therefore that ye in no wise be like to strangers neither be ye afraid of them when ye see the multitude before them and behinde them worshipping them 6 But say ye in your hearts O Lord we must worship thee 7 For mine angel is with you and I my self caring for your souls 8 As for their tongue it is polished by the workman and they themselves are gilded and laid over with gold yet are they but false and cannot speak 9 And taking gold as it were for a virgin that loves to go gay they make crowns for the herds of their gods 10 Sometimes also the priests convey from their gods gold and silver and bestow it upon themselves 11 Yea they will give thereof to the ‖ Or which prostitute themselves openly common harlots and deck them as men with garments being gods of silver and gods of gold and wood 12 Yet cannot these gods save themselves from rust and moths though they be covered with purple raiment 13 They wipe their faces because of the dust of the temple when there is much upon them 14 And he that cannot put to death one that offendeth him holdeth a sceptre as though he were a judge of the countrey 15 He hath also in his right hand a dagger and an ax but cannot deliver himself from war and theeves 16 Whereby they are known not to be gods therefore fear them not 17 For like as a vessel that a man useth is nothing worth when it is broken even so it is with their gods when they be set up in the temple their eyes be full of dust through the feet of them that come in 18 And as the ‖ Or courts doors are made sure on every side upon him that offendeth the king as being committed to suffer death even so the priests make fast their temples with doors with locks and bars lest their gods be spoiled with robbers 19 They light them candles yea more then for themselves whereof they cannot see one 20 They are as one of the beams of the temple yet they say their hearts are †Gr. licked gnawed upon by things creeping out of the earth and when they eat them and their clothes they feel it not 21 Their faces are blacked through the smoke that comes out of the temple 22 Upon their bodies and heads sit bats swallows and birds and the cats also 23 By this you may know that they are no gods therefore fear them not 24 Notwithstanding the gold that is about them to make them beautiful except they wipe off the rust they will not shine for neither when they were molten did they feel it 25 The things wherein there is no breath are bought for ‖ Or any price a most high price 26 * Isa 46.7 They are born upon shoulders having no feet whereby they declare unto men that they be nothing worth 27 They also that serve them are ashamed for if they fall to the ground at any time they cannot rise up again of themselves neither if one let them upright can they move of themselves neither if they be bowed down can they make themselves straight but they set ‖ Or offerings gifts before them as unto dead men 28 As for the things that are sacrificed unto them their priests sell and ‖ Or spend abuse in like manner their wives lay up part thereof in salt but unto the poor and impotent they give nothing of it 29 Menstruous women and women in childbed * Lev. 12.4 eat their sacrifices by these things ye may know that they are no gods fear them not 30 For how can they be called gods because women set meat before the gods of silver gold and wood 31 And the priests sit in their temples having their clothes rent and their heads and beards shaven and nothing upon their heads 32 They rore and cry before their gods as men do at the feast when one is dead 33 The priests also take off their garments and clothe their wives and children 34 Whether it be evil that one doeth unto them or good they are not able to recompense it they can neither set up a king nor put him down 35 In like manner they can neither give riches nor money though a man make a vow unto them and keep it not they will not require it 36 They can save no man from death neither deliver the weak from the mighty 37 They cannot restore a blinde man to his sight nor help any man in his distress 38 They can shew no mercy to the widow nor do good to the fatherless 39 Their gods of wood and which are overlaid with gold and silver are like the stones that be hewn out of the mountain they that worship them shall be confounded 40 How should a man then think and say that they are gods when even the Caldeans themselves dishonour them 41 Who if they shall see one dumb that cannot speak they ‖ Or bid
kings and gave them and their friends silver and gold and many presents and found favour in their sight 61 At that time certain pestilent fellows of Israel men of a wicked life assembled themselves against him to accuse him but the king would not hear them 62 Yea more then that the king commanded to take off his garments and clothe him in purple and they did so 63 Also he made him sit by himself and said unto his princes Go with him into the midst of the city and make proclamation that no man complain against him of any matter and that no man trouble him for any manner of cause 64 Now when his accusers saw that he was honoured according to the proclamation and clothed in purple they fled all away 65 So the king honoured him and wrote him amongst his chief friends and made him a duke and ‖ Or governour of a province partaker of his dominion 66 Afterward Jonathan returned to Jerusalem with peace gladness 67 Furthermore in the hundred threescore and fifth year came Demetrius son of Demetrius out of Crete into the land of his fathers 68 Whereof when king Alexander heard tell he was right sorry and returned into Antioch 69 Then Demetrius made Apollonius the governour of Celosyria his general who gathered together a great host and camped in Jamnia and sent unto Jonathan the high priest saying 70 Thou alone liftest up thy self against us and I am laughed to scorn for thy sake and reproached and why dost thou vaunt thy power against us in the mountains 71 Now therefore if thou trustest in thine own strength come down to us into the plain field and there let us trie the matter together for with me is the power of the cities 72 Ask and learn who I am and the rest that take our part and they shall tell thee that thy foot is not able to stand before our face for thy fathers have been twice put to flight in their own land 73 Wherefore now thou shalt not be able to abide the hors-men and so great a power in the plain where is neither stone nor flint nor place to flee unto 74 So when Jonathan heard these words of Apollonius he was moved in his minde and choosing ten thousand men he went out of Jerusalem where Simon his brother met him for to help him 75 And he pitched his tents against Joppe but they of Joppe shut him out of the city because Apollonius had a garison there 76 Then Jonathan laid siege unto it whereupon they of the city let him in for fear and so Jonathan wan Joppe 77 Whereof when Apollonius heard he took three thousand hors-men with a great host of footmen and went to Azotus ‖ Or as though be would pass through it as one that journeyed and therewithal ‖ Or led his company drew him forth into the plain because he had a great number of hors-men in whom he put his trust 78 Then Jonathan followed after him to Azotus where the armies joyned battel 79 Now Apollonius had left a thousand hors-men in ambush 80 And Jonathan knew that there was an ambushment behinde him for they had compassed in his host and cast darts at the people from morning till evening 81 But the people stood still as Jonathan had commanded them and so the ‖ Joseph Ant. lib. 13. cap. 8. enemies horses were tired 82 Then brought Simon forth his host and set them against the footmen for the hors-men were spent who were discomfited by him and fled 83 The hors men also being scattered in the field fled to Azotus and went into Beth-dagon their idols temple for safety 84 But Jonathan set fire on Azotus and the cities round about it and took their spoils and the temple of Dagon with them that were fled into it he burnt with sire 85 Thus there were burnt and slain with the sword welnigh eight thousand men 85 And from thence Jonathan removed his host and camped against Ascalon where the men of the cities came forth and met him with great pomp 87 After this returned Jonathan and his host unto Jerusalem having many spoils 88 Now when king Alexander heard these things he honoured Jonathan yet more 89 And sent him a buckle of gold as the use is to be given to such as are of the kings bloud he gave him also Accaron with the borders thereof in possession CHAP. XI 12 Ptolemeus taketh away his daughter from Alexander and entreth upon his kingdom 17 Alexander is slain and Ptolemeus dieth within three days 20 Jonathan besiegeth the towre at Jerusalem 26 The Jews and be are much honoured by Demetrius 48 who is rescued by the Jews from his own subjects in Antioch 57 Antiochus the younger honoureth Jonathan 61 His exploits in divers places ANd the king of Egypt gathered together a great host like the sand that lieth upon the sea-shore and many ships and went about through deceit to get Alexanders kingdom and joyn it to his own 2 Whereupon he took his journey into Syria in peaceable manner so as they of the cities opened unto him and met him for king Alexander had commanded them so to do because he was his father in law 3 Now as Ptolemee entred into the cities he set in every one of them a garison of souldiers to keep it 4 And when he came near to Azotus they shewed him the temple of Dagon that was burnt and Azotus and the suburbs thereof that were destroyed and the bodies that were cast abroad and them that he had burnt in the battel for they had made heaps of them by the way where he should pass 5 Also they told the king whatsoever Jonathan had done to the intent he might blame him but the king held his peace 6 Then Jonathan met the king with great pomp at Joppe where they saluted one another and †Gr. slept lodged 7 Afterward Jonathan when he had gone with the king to the river called Eleutherus returned again to Jerusalem 8 King Ptolemee therefore having gotten the dominion of the cities by the sea unto Seleucia upon the Sea cost imagined wicked counsels against Alexander 9 Whereupon he sent ambassadours unto king Demetrius saying Come let us make a league betwixt us and I will give thee my daughter whom Alexander hath and thou shalt reign in thy fathers kingdom 10 For I repent that I gave my daughter unto him for he sought to slay me 11 Thus did he slander him because he was desirous of his kingdom 12 Wherefore he took his daughter from him and gave her to Demetrius and forsook Alexander so the their hatred was openly known 13 Then Ptolemee entred into Antioch where he set two crowns upon his head the crown of Asia and of Egypt 14 In the mean season was king Alexander in Cilicia because those that dwelt in those parts had revolted from him 15 But when Alexander heard of this he came to war against him whereupon king
commaâ—dment but I will obey the commandment of the law that was given unto our fathers by Moses 31 And thou that hast been the authour of all mischief against the Hebrews shalt not escape the hands of God 32 For we suffer because of our sins 33 And though the living Lord be angry with us a little while for our chastning and correction yet shall he beat one again with his servants 34 But thou O godless man and of all other most wicked be not lifted up without a cause nor puffed up with uncertain hopes lifting up thy hand against the servants of God 35 For thou hast not yet escaped the judgement of almighty God who seeth all things 36 For our brethren who now have suffered a short pain are dead under Gods covenant of everlasting life but thou through the judgement of God shalt receive just punishment for thy pride 37 But I as my brethren offer up my body and life for the laws of our fathers beseeching God that he would speedily be merciful unto our nation and that thou by torments and plagues mayest confess that he alone is God 38 And that in me and my brethren the wrath of the Almighty which is justly brought upon all our nation may cease 39 Then the king being in a rage handled him worse then all the rest and took it grievously that he was mocked 40 So this man died undefiled and put his whole trust in the Lord. 41 Last of all after the sons the mother died 42 Let this be enough now to have spoken concerning the idolatrous feasts and the extreme tortures CHAP. VIII 1 Judas gathereth an host 9 Nicanor is sent against him who Presumeth to make much money of his prisoners 16 Judas encourageth his men and putteth Nicanor to flight 18 and divideth the spoils 30 Other enemies are also defeated 35 and Nicanor fleeth with grief to Antioch THen Judas Maccabeus and they that were with him went privily into the towns and called their kins folks together and took unto them all such as continued in the Jews religion and assembled about six thousand men 2 And they called upon the Lord that he would look upon the people that was troden down of all and also pity the temple profaned of ungodly men 3 And that he would have compassion upon the city sore defaced and ready to be made even with the ground and hear the bloud that cried unto him 4 And remember the wicked slaughter of harmless infants and the blasphemies committed against his name and that he would shew his hatred against the wicked 5 Now when Maccabeus had his company about him he could not be withstood by the heathen for the wrath of the Lord was turned into mercy 6 Therefore he came at unawares and burnt up towns and cities and got into his hands the most commodious places and overcame and put to flight no small number of his enemies 7 But specially took he advantage of the night for such privy attempts insomuch that the bruit of his manliness was spread every where 8 So when Philip saw that this man increased by little and little and that things prospered with him still more and more he wrote unto Ptolemeus the governour of Celosyria and Phenice to yeeld more aid to the kings affairs 9 Then forthwith choosing Nicanor the son of Patroclus one of his special friends he sent him with no fewer then twenty thousand of all nations under him to root out the whole generation of the Jews and with him he joyned also Gorgias a captain who in matters of war had great experience 10 So Nicanor undertook to make so much money of the captive Jews as should defray the tribute of two thousand talents which the king was to pay to the Romanes 11 Wherefore immediately he sent to the cities upon the sea-coast proclaiming a sale of the captive Jews and promising that they should have fourscore and ten bodies for one talent not expecting the vengeance that was to follow upon him from the almighty God 12 Now when word was brought unto Judas of Nicanors coming and he had imparted unto those that were with him that the army was at hand 13 They that were fearful and distrusted the justice of God fled and conveyed themselves away 14 Others sold all that they had left and withal besought the Lord to deliver them being sold by the wicked Nicanor before they met together 15 And if not for their own sakes yet for the covenants he had made with their fathers and for his holy and glorious name sake by which they were called 16 So Maccabeus called his men together unto the number of six thousand and exhorted them not to be stricken with terrour of the enemy nor to fear the great multitude of the heathen who came wrongfully against them but to fight manfully 17 And to set before their eyes the injury that they had unjustly done to the holy place and the cruel handling of the city whereof they made a mockery and also the taking away of the government of their forefathers 18 For they said he trust in their weapons and holdness but our confidence is in the almighty God who at a beck can cast down both them that come against us and also all the world 19 Moreover he recounted unto them what helps their forefathers had found and how they were delivered when under Sennacherib an hundred fourscore and five thousand perished 20 And he told them of the battel that they had in Babylon with the Galatians how they came but eight thousand in all to the business with four thousand Macedonians and that the Macedonians being perplexed the eight thousand destroyed an hundred and twenty thousand because of the help that they had from heaven and so received a great booty 21 Thus when he had made them bold with these words and ready to die for the laws and the countrey he divided his army into four parts 22 And joyned with himself his own brethren leaders of each band to wit Simon and Josepâ— and Jonathan giving each one fifteen hundred men 23 Also be appointed Eleazar to read the holy book and when he had given them this watch-word The help of God himself leading the first band he joyned battel with Nicanor 24 And by the help of the Almighty they slew above nine thousand of their enemies and wounded and maimed the most part of Nicanors host and so put all to flight 25 And took their money that came to buy them and pursued them far but lacking time they returned 26 For it was the day before the sabbath and therefore they would no longer pursue them 27 So when they had gathered ‖ That is the enemies armour their armour together and spoiled their enemies they occupied themselves about the sabbath yeelding exceeding praise and thanks to the Lord who had preserved them unto that day which was the beginning of mercy distilling upon them 28 And after the sabbath when they had

XXIII 1 Jesus is accused before Pilate and sent to Herod 8 Herod mocketh him 12 Herod and Pilate are made friends 18 Barabbas is desired of the people and is loosed by Pilate and Jesus is given to be crucifie i. 27 He telleth the women that lament him the destruction of Jerusalem 34 prayeth for his enemies 39 Two evil-doers are crue fieâ— with him 46 His death 50 His burial ANd the whole multitude of them arose and led him unto Pilate 2 And they began to accuse him saying We found this fellow perverting the nation and forbidding to give tribute to Cesar saying that he himself is Christ a king 3 * Mat. 27. â—1 And Pilate asked him saying Art thou the king of the Jews and he answered him and said Thou sayest it 4 Then said Pilate to the chief priests and to the people I finde no fault in this man 5 And they were the more fierce saying He stirreth up the people teaching throughout all Jury beginning from Galilee to this place 6 When Pilate heard of Galilee he asked whether the man were a Galilean 7 And assoon as he knew that he belonged unto Herods jurisdiction he sent him to Herod who himself was also at Jerusalem at that time 8 ¶ And when Herod saw Jesus he was exceeding glad for he was desirous to see him of a long season because he had heard many things of him and he hoped to have seen some miracle dome by him 9 Then he questioned with him in many words but he answered him nothing 10 And the chief priests scribes stood vehemently accused him 11 And Herod with his men of war set him at nought and mocked him and arayed him in a gorgeous robe and sent him again to Pilate 12 ¶ And the same day Pilate and Herod were made friends together for before they were at emnmity between themselves 13 ¶ * Mat. 27. â—3 And Pilate when he had called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people 14 Said unto them Ye have brought this man unto me as one that perverteth the people and behold I have examined him before you have found no fault in this man touching those things whereof ye accuse him 15 No nor yet Herod for I sent you to him and lo nothing worthy of death is done unto him 16 I will therefore chastise him and release him 17 For of necessity he must release one unto them at the feast 18 And they cried out all at once saying Away with this man and release unto us Barabbas 19 Who for a certain sedition made in the city and for murder was cast in prison 20 Pilate therefore willing to release jesus spake again to them 21 But they cried saying Crucifie him crucifie him 22 And he said unto them the third time Why what evil hath he done I have found no cause of death in him I will therefore chastise him and let him go 23 And they were instant with loud voices requiring that he might be crucified and the voices of them and of the chief priests prevailed 24 And Pilate ‖ Or assented gave sentence that it should be as they required 25 And he released unto them him that for sedition murder was cast into prison whom they had desired but he delivered Jesus to their-will 26 * Mat. 27.32 And as they led him away they laid hold upon one Simon a Cyrenian coming out of the countrey and on him they laid the cross that he might bear it after Jesus 27 ¶ And there followed him a great company of people and of women which also bewailed and lamented him 28 But Jesus turning unto them said Daughters of Jerusalem weep not for me but weep for your selves and for your children 29 For behold the days are coming in the which they shall say Blessed are the barren and the wombs that never bare and the paps which never gave suck 30 * Isâ— 2.19 â—â—os 1â— 8 Rev. 6.16 Then shall they begin to say to the mountains Fall on us and to the hills Cover us 31 * 1 Pet. 4.17 For if they do these things in a green tree what shall be done in the dry 32 * Mat. 27.38 And there were also two other malefactours led with him to be put to death 33 And when they were come to the place which is called ‖ Or the place of a â—â—ull Calvarie there they crucified him and the malefactours one on the right hand and the other on the left 34 ¶ Then said Jesus Father forgive them for they know not what they do And they parted his raiment and cast lots 35 And the people stood beholding and the rulers also with them derided him saying He saved others let him save himself if he be Chriâ—t the chosen of God 36 And the souldiers also mocked him coming to him and offering him vineger 37 And saying If thou be the king of the Jews save thy self 38 And a superscription also was written over him in letters of

XXVIII 1 Paul after his shipwrack is kindly entertained of the Barbarians 3 The viper on his hand hurteth him not 8 He healeth many diseases in the island 11 They depart towards Rome 17 He declareth to the Jews the cause of his coming 24 After his preaching some were perswaded and some beleeved not 30 Yet he preacheth there two years ANd when they were escaped then they knew that the island was called Melita 2 And the barbarous people shewed us no little kindness for they kindled a fire and received us every one because of the present rain and because of the cold 3 And when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks and laid them on the fire there came a viper out of the heat and fastned on his hand 4 And when the Barbarians law the venemous beast hang on his hand they said among themselves No doubt this man is a murderer whom though he hath escaped the sea yet vengeance suffereth not to live 5 And he shook off the beast into the fire and felt no harm 6 Howbeit they looked when he should have swoln or faln down dead suddenly but after they had looked a great while and saw no harm come to him they changed their minds and said that he was a God 7 In the same quarters were possessions of the chief man of the island whose name was Publius who received us and lodged us three days courteously 8 And it came to pass that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever and of a bloudy flux to whom Paul entred in and prayed and laid his hands on him and healed him 9 So when this was done others also which had diseases in the island came and were healed 10 Who also honoured us with many honours and when we departed they laded us with such things as were necessary 11 And after three moneths we departed in a ship of Alexandria which had wintred in the isle whose signe was Castor and Pollux 12 And landing at Syracuse we tarried there three days 13 And from thence we set a compass and came to Rhegium and after one day the south-wind blew and we came the next day to Puteoâ—â— 14 Where we found brethren and were desired to tarry with them seven days and so we went toward Rome 15 And from thence when the brethren heard of us they came to meet us as far as Appii-forum and the Three taverns whom when Paul saw he thanked God and took courage 16 And when we came to Rome the centurion delivered the prisoners to the captain of the guard but Paul was suffered to dwell by himself with a souldier that kept him 17 And it came to pass that after three days Paul called the chief of the Jews together And when they were come together he said unto them Men and brethren though I have committed nothing against the people or customs of our fathers yet was I delivered prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans 18 Who when they had examined me would have let me go because there was no cause of death in me 19 But when the Jews spake against it I was constrained to appeal unto Cesar not that I had ought to accuse my nation of 20 For this cause therefore have I called for you to see you and to speak with you because that for the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain 21 And they said unto him We neither received letters out of Judea concerning thee neither any of the brethren that came shewed or spake any harm of thee 22 But we desire to hear of thee what thou thinkest for as concerning this sect we know that every where it is spoken against 23 And when they had appointed him a day there came many to him into his lodging to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God perswading them concerning Jesus both out of the law of Moses and out of the prophets from morning till evening 24 And some beleeved the things which were spoken and some beleeved not 25 And when they agreed not among themselves they departed after that Paul had spoken one word Well spake the holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet unto our fathers 26 Saying * Isa 6.9 Mat. 13.14 Mar. 4.12 Luk. 8.10 Joh. 12.40 Rom. 11.8 Go unto this people and say Hearing ye shall hear and shall not understand and seeing ye shall see and not perceive 27 For the heart of this people is waxed gross and their ears are dull of hearing and their eyes have they closed lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and should be converted and I should heal them 28 Be it known therefore unto you that the salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles and that they will hear it 29 And when he had said these words the Jews departed and had great reasoning among themselves 30 And Paul dwelt two whole years in his own hired house and received all that came in unto him 31 Preaching the kingdom of God and teaching those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ with all confidence no man forbidding him ¶ The epistle of PAUL the Apostle to the ROMANS CHAP. I. 1 Paul commendeth his calling to the Romans 9 and his desire to come to them 16 What his gospel is and the righteousness which it sheweth 18 God is angry with all manner of sin 21 What were the sins of the Gentiles PAul a servant of Jesus Christ called to be an apostle * Act. 13.2 separated unto the gospel of God 2 Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures 3 Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh 4 And †Or. determined declared to be the Son of God with power according to the spirit of holiness by the resurrection from the dead 5 By whom we have received grace and apostleship ‖ Or to the obedience of faith for obedience to the faith among all nations for his name 6 Among whom are ye also the called of Jesus Christ 7 To all that be in Rome beloved of God called to be saints Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ 8 First I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world 9 For God is my witness whom I serve ‖ Or in my spirit with my spirit in the Gospel of his Son that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers
For * Wis 63. there is no power but of God the powers that be are ‖ Or ordered ordained of God 2 Whosoever therefore resisteth the power resisteth the ordinance of God and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation 3 For rulers are not a terrour to good works but to the evil Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power do that which is good and thou shalt have praise of the same 4 For he is the minister of God to thee for good But if thou do that which is evil be afraid for he beareth not the sword in vain for he is the minister of God a revenger to execute wrath upon him the doeth evil 5 Wherefore ye must needs be subject not onely for wrath but also for conscience sake 6 For for this cause pay you tribute also for they are Gods ministers attending continually upon this very thing 7 * Mat. 22.21 Render therefore to all their dues tribute to whom tribute is due custom to whom custom fear to whom fear honour to whom honour 8 Owe no man any thing but to love one another for he that â—oveth another hath fulfilled the law 9 For this * Ex. 20. XIV 3 Men may not contemn nor condemn one the other for things indifferent 13 but take heed that they give no offence in them 15 For that the apostle proveth unlawful by many reasons HIm that is weak in the faith receive you but ‖ Or not to judge his doubtful thoughts not to doubtful disputations 2 For one beleeveth that he may eat all things another who is weak eateth herbs 3 Let not him that eateth despise him that eateth not and let not him which eateth not judge him that eateth for God hath received him 4 * Jam. 4.12 Who art thou that judgest another mans servant to his own master he standeth or falleth Yea he shall be holden up for God is able to make him stand 5 One man esteemeth one day above another another esteemeth every day alike Let every man be ‖ Or fully assured fully perswaded in his own minde 6 He that ‖ Or obsâ—rveth regardeth the day regardeth it unto the Lord and he that regardeth not the day to the Lord he doth not regard it He that eateth eateth to the Lord for he giveth God thanks and he that eateth not to the Lord he eateth not and giveth God thanks 7 For none of us liveth to himself and no man dieth to himself 8 For whether we live we live unto the Lord and whether we die we die unto the Lord whether we live therefore or die we are the Loâ—ds 9 For to this end Christ both died and rose and revived that he might be Lord both of the dead and living 10 But why dost thou judge thy brother or why dost thou let at nought thy brother for * 2 Cor. 5.10 we shall all stand before the judgement-seat of Christ 11 For it is written * Isa 45.23 Phil. 2.10 As I live saith the Lord every knee shall bow to me and every tongue shall confess to God 12 So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God 13 Let us not therefore judge one another any more but judge this rather that no man put a stumbling-block or an accasion to fall in his brothers way 14 I know and am perswaded by the Lord Jesus that there is nothing †Gr. common unclean of it self but to him that esteemeth any thing to be †Gr. common unclean to him it is unclean 15 But if thy brother be grieved with thy meat now walkest thou not †Gr. auording to charity charitably * 1 Cor. 8.11 Destroy not him with thy meat for whom Christ died 16 Let not then your good be evil spoken of 17 For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink but righteousness and peace and joy in the holy Ghost 18 For he that in these things serveth Christ is acceptable to God and approved of men 19 Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace and things wherewith one may edifie another 20 For meat destroy not the work of God * Tit. 1.15 All things indeed are pure but it is evil for that man who eateth with offence 21 It is good neither to eat * 1 Cor. 8.13 flesh nor to drink wine nor any thing whereby thy brother stumbleth or is offended or is made weak 22 Hast thou faith have it to thy self before God Happy is he that condemneth not himself in that thing which he alloweth 23 And he that ‖ Or disearneth and putteth a difference between meats doubteth is damned if he eat because he eateth not of faith for whatsoever is not of faith is sin CHAP. XV. 1 The strong must hear with the weak 2 We may not please our selves 3 for Christ did not so 7 but receive one the other as Christ did us all 8 both Jews 9 and Gentiles 15 Paul excuseth his writing 28 and promiseth to see them 30 and requesteth their prayers WE then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak and not to please our selves 2 Let every one of us please his neighbour for his good to edification 3 For even Christ pleased not himself but as it is written * Psal 69.9 The reproaches of them that reproached thee fell on me 4 For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope 5 * 1 Cor. 1.10 Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be like-minded one towards another ‖ Or after the example of according to Christ Jesus 6 That ye may with one minde and one mouth glorifie God even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ 7 Wherefore receive ye one another as Christ also received us to

III. 1 Lest their false teachers should charge him with vain-glory he sheweth the faith and graces of the Corinthians to be a sufficient commendation of his ministery 6 Whereupon entring a comparison between the ministers of the law and of the gospel 12 he proveth that his ministery is so far the more excellent as the gospel of life and liberty is more glorious then the law of condemnation DO we begin again to commend our selves or need we as some others epistles of commendation to you or letters of commendation from you 2 Ye are our epistle written in our hearts known read of all men 3 For as much as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministred by us written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God not in tables of stone but in fleshly tables of the heart 4 And such trust have we through Christ to God-ward 5 Not that we are sufficient of our selves to think any thing as of our selves but our sufficiency is of God 6 Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament not of the letter but of the spirit for the letter killeth but the spirit ‖ Or quickneth giveth life 7 But if the ministration of death written and engraven in stones was glorious so that the children of Israel could not stedfastly behold the face of Moses for the glory of his countenance which glory was to be done away 8 How shall not the ministration of the spirit be rather glorious 9 For if the ministration of condemnation be glory much more doth the ministration of righteousness exceed in glory 10 For even that which was made glorious had no glory in this respect by reason of the glory that excelleth 11 For if that which is done away was glorious much more that which remaineth is glorious 12 Seeing then that we have such hope we use great ‖ Or boldness plainness of speech 13 And not as Moses * Exod. 34.33 which put a vail over his face that the children of Israel could not stedfastly look to the end of that which is abolished 14 But their mindes were blinded for until this day remaineth the same vail untâ—ken away in the reading of the old testament which vail is done away in Christ 15 But even unto this day when Moses is read the vail is upon their heart 16 Nevertheless when it shall turn to the Lord the vail shall be taken away 17 Now the Lord is that Spirit and where the Spirit of the Lord is there is liberty 18 But we all with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord are changed into the same image from glory to glory even as ‖ Or of the Lord the Spirit by the Spirit of the Lord. CHAP. IV. 1 He declareth how he hath used all sincerity and faithful diligence in preaching the â—ospel 7 and how the troubles and persecutions which be daily endureth for the same did redound to the praise of Gods power 12 to the benefit of the church 16 and to the apostle's own eternal glory THerefore seeing we have this ministery as we have received mercy we faint not 2 But have renounced the hidden things of †Or. shâ—me dishonesty not walking in craftiness nor handling the word of God deceitfully but by manifestation of the truth commending our selves to every mans conscience in the sight of God 3 But if our gospel be hid it is hid to them that are lost 4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which beleeve not lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ who is the image of God should shine unto them 5 For we preach not our selves but Christ Jesus the Lord and our selves your servants for Jesus sake 6 For God who commanded the light to shine out of darkness hath shined in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ 7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels that the excellency of the power may be of God and not of us 8 We are troubled on every side yet not distressed we are perplexed but ‖ Or not altogether without help or means not in despair 9 Persecuted but not forsaken cast down but not destroyed 10 Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body 11 For we which live are alway delivered unto death for Jesus sake that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh 12 So then death worketh in us but life in you 13 We having the same spirit of faith according as it is written * Psal 11â— 10 I beleeved and therefore have I spoken we also beleeve and therefore speak 14 Knowing that he which raised up the Lord Jesus shall raise up us also by Jesus and shall present us with you 15 For all things are for your sakes that the abundant grace might through the thanksgiving of many redound to the glory of God 16 For which cause we faint not but though our outward man perish yet the inward man is renewed day by day 17 For our light affliction which is but for a moment worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory 18 While we look not at the things which are seen but at the things which are not seen for the things which are seen are temporal but the things which are not seen are eternal CHAP. V. 1 That in his assured hope of immortal glory 9 and in expâ—ctance of it and of the general judgement he laboureth to keep a good conscirence 12 not that he may herein boast of himself 14 but as one that having received life from Christ endeavoureth to live as a new creature to Christ onely 18 and by his ministery of reconciliation to reconcile others also in Christ to God FOr we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved we have a building of God an house not made with hands eternal in the heavens 2 For in this we groan earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven 3 If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked 4 For we that are in this tabernacle do groan being burdened not for that we would be unclothed but clothed upon that mortality might be swallowed up of life 5 Now he that hath wrought us for the self same thing is God who also hath given unto us the earnest of

IV. 1 He exhorteth them to cease from sin by the example of Christ and the consideration of the general end that now approacheth 12 and comforteth them against persecution FOrasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh arm your selves likewise with the same minde for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin 2 That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men but to the will of God 3 For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles when we walked in lasciviousness lusts excess of wine revellings banquettings and abominable idolatries 4 Wherein they think it strange that you run not with them to the same excess of riot speaking evil of you 5 Who shall give account to him that is ready to judge the quick and the dead 6 For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead that they might be judged according to men in the flesh but live according to God in the spirit 7 But the end of all things is at hand be ye therefore sober and watch unto prayer 8 And above all things have fervent charity among your selves for * Pr. 1â— 12 charity ‖ Or will shall cover the multitude of sins 9 * Rom. 12.13 Heb. 13.2 Use hospitality one to another without grudging 10 * Rom. 12.6 As every man hath received the gift even so minister the same one to another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God 11 If any man speak let him speak as the oracles of God if any man minister let him do it as of the ability which God giveth that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever Amen 12 Beloved think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you as though some strange thing happened unto you 13 But rejoyce in as much as ye are partakers or Christs sufferings that when his glory shall be revealed ye may be glad also with exceeding joy 14 * Mat. â— 11 If ye be reproached for the name of Christ happy are ye for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you on their part he is evil spoken of but on your part he is glorified 15 But let none of you suffer as a murderer or as a thief or as an evil-doer or as a busie-body in other mens matters 16 Yet if any man suffer as a Christian let him not be ashamed but let him glorifie God on this behalf 17 For the time is come that judgement must begin at the house of God and if it first begin at us what shall the end be of them that obey not the Gospel of God 18 * Pr. 11.31 And if the righteous scarcely be saved where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear 19 Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well-doing as unto a faithful Creatour CHAP.
