be_v the_o fit_a to_o be_v bring_v to_o the_o mean_a betwixt_o both_o that_o be_v broken-heartednes_a and_o humility_n for_o as_o a_o log_n in_o the_o deep_a mire_n have_v long_o lie_v therein_o be_v so_o fasten_v to_o the_o place_n as_o it_o be_v impossible_a to_o remove_v or_o pluck_v it_o out_o unless_o it_o be_v loosen_v and_o turn_v into_o another_o place_n but_o be_v so_o handle_v it_o may_v with_o ease_n be_v take_v out_o even_o so_o if_o a_o man_n set_v upon_o his_o dregs_n i_o mean_v be_v rivet_v into_o his_o sin_n be_v not_o loosen_v from_o they_o by_o some_o terror_n and_o heart-smart_n though_o he_o be_v bring_v never_o the_o near_o to_o repentance_n thereby_o yet_o he_o shall_v if_o he_o be_v such_o a_o one_o as_o god_n will_v show_v mercy_n unto_o he_o shall_v i_o say_v much_o more_o easy_o be_v persuade_v thereto_o according_a to_o that_o which_o we_o say_v in_o our_o common_a speech_n and_o that_o true_o of_o a_o wicked_a man_n bend_v to_o his_o will_n and_o to_o live_v licentious_o that_o he_o be_v never_o like_a to_o amend_v and_o come_v to_o good_a unless_o the_o lord_n awake_v he_o by_o some_o great_a affliction_n this_o manner_n of_o god_n deal_v with_o man_n to_o bring_v they_o to_o so_o happy_a a_o estate_n by_o so_o unlikely_a mean_n and_o so_o far_o off_o shall_v teach_v the_o man_n of_o this_o age_n that_o wisdom_n have_v knowledge_n which_o the_o ignorant_a can_v learn_v that_o in_o their_o trouble_n and_o astonishment_n they_o shall_v not_o think_v that_o they_o be_v punish_v see_v god_n take_v delight_n therein_o and_o so_o wax_v harden_v but_o to_o know_v that_o they_o not_o humble_v their_o heart_n to_o seek_v the_o lord_n by_o preach_v and_o by_o god_n benefit_n they_o have_v need_v to_o be_v awake_v by_o his_o judgement_n and_o that_o he_o do_v therefore_o afflict_v they_o that_o they_o may_v know_v they_o be_v far_o go_v in_o their_o evil_a course_n that_o so_o they_o may_v lay_v sure_a hold_n of_o his_o word_n and_o take_v direction_n and_o counsel_n from_o thence_o to_o be_v bring_v to_o god_n but_o let_v we_o see_v how_o god_n wrought_v by_o the_o second_o mean_v that_o be_v far_o off_o and_o so_o how_o he_o bring_v he_o on_o by_o degree_n to_o true_a conversion_n life_n this_o second_o mean_n be_v paul_n care_n of_o he_o in_o his_o desperate_a estate_n to_o hinder_v and_o dissuade_v he_o from_o offer_v violence_n to_o himself_o and_o his_o kindness_n towards_o he_o in_o overcome_v evil_a with_o good_a for_o whereas_o the_o jailor_n have_v show_v himself_o cruel_a towards_o he_o 12.21_o when_o he_o have_v give_v he_o no_o cause_n so_o to_o do_v and_o therefore_o look_v for_o no_o good_a will_n at_o his_o hand_n if_o possible_o he_o shall_v stand_v in_o never_o so_o great_a need_n thereof_o behold_v he_o have_v no_o great_a friend_n than_o he_o who_o he_o have_v deserve_v to_o be_v his_o great_a enemy_n for_o even_o by_o he_o be_v his_o life_n preserve_v this_o when_o mark_v the_o beauty_n of_o virtue_n and_o grace_n in_o god_n servant_n how_o great_o it_o move_v the_o heart_n even_o of_o wicked_a man_n sure_o if_o they_o be_v careful_a that_o their_o light_n may_v shine_v in_o good_a conversation_n among_o man_n they_o shall_v not_o a_o little_a provoke_v they_o out_o of_o their_o bad_a course_n and_o to_o be_v in_o love_n with_o a_o better_a i_o do_v not_o deny_v but_o it_o most_o move_v they_o when_o it_o bring_v any_o benefit_n to_o they_o as_o here_o paul_n love_n and_o care_n do_v to_o the_o jailor_n they_o have_v double_a force_n to_o work_v upon_o he_o and_o although_o it_o help_v much_o i_o grant_v to_o the_o further_o draw_v he_o on_o towards_o goodness_n yet_o that_o only_o be_v not_o to_o be_v see_v in_o he_o but_o that_o do_v beat_v into_o he_o a_o persuasion_n that_o he_o be_v a_o good_a man_n and_o be_v able_a to_o do_v he_o good_a also_o and_o therefore_o a_o little_a after_o he_o desire_v to_o know_v of_o he_o how_o he_o may_v be_v save_v so_o that_o kindness_n and_o harmelesnes_n and_o other_o fruit_n of_o love_n if_o they_o be_v more_o usual_o and_o plentiful_o show_v forth_o by_o christian_n they_o will_v undoubted_o pierce_v the_o heart_n of_o many_o wicked_a man_n and_o cause_v they_o to_o think_v that_o they_o be_v far_o from_o the_o course_n which_o they_o shall_v walk_v in_o for_o though_o many_o scorner_n and_o profane_a person_n do_v trample_v goodness_n and_o good_a man_n under_o their_o foot_n yet_o the_o beauty_n of_o piety_n and_o christianity_n do_v much_o move_v and_o avail_v with_o many_o as_o we_o see_v by_o peter_n word_n to_o christian_a woman_n where_o he_o say_v let_v the_o wife_n be_v subject_a to_o their_o husband_n 3.1_o that_o even_o they_o that_o obey_v not_o the_o word_n may_v without_o the_o word_n be_v win_v by_o the_o conversation_n of_o their_o wife_n but_o especial_o if_o god_n servant_n will_v as_o opportunity_n be_v offer_v show_v their_o love_n in_o seek_v to_o win_v they_o to_o god_n and_o to_o help_v they_o towards_o eternal_a life_n much_o more_o shall_v they_o persuade_v they_o to_o forsake_v their_o bad_a course_n and_o to_o embrace_v a_o better_a as_o our_o saviour_n christ_n talk_v with_o that_o woman_n of_o samaria_n bring_v she_o to_o repentance_n 4._o and_o this_o be_v say_v of_o the_o second_o mean_v of_o the_o conversion_n of_o the_o jailor_n though_o far_o off_o which_o as_o it_o be_v a_o degree_n before_o the_o former_a so_o they_o who_o be_v move_v as_o he_o be_v be_v sensible_o set_v forward_o as_o he_o be_v though_o i_o deny_v not_o but_o that_o many_o come_n thus_o far_o and_o further_o from_o their_o evil_a course_n may_v yet_o be_v far_o enough_o off_o from_o true_a conversion_n but_o let_v we_o hear_v the_o three_o mean_v apostle_n which_o the_o second_o now_o speak_v of_o procure_v and_o bring_v forth_o and_o that_o be_v a_o near_a degree_n to_o goodness_n than_o the_o former_a and_o this_o it_o be_v that_o he_o conceive_v so_o well_o of_o they_o of_o paul_n and_o silas_n i_o mean_v that_o for_o all_o the_o commandment_n of_o the_o magistrate_n he_o bring_v they_o out_o of_o the_o prison_n and_o fall_v down_o before_o they_o in_o token_n of_o reverence_n to_o they_o and_o so_o fall_v to_o near_a acquaintance_n with_o they_o who_o be_v good_a man_n it_o give_v hope_n of_o his_o further_a good_a take_v by_o end_n that_o they_o may_v distaste_v their_o former_a course_n and_o bring_v they_o to_o hear_v the_o word_n preach_v and_o so_o in_o time_n to_o be_v change_v thus_o many_o become_v believer_n in_o christ_n by_o company_n and_o acquaintance_n with_o preacher_n who_o be_v appoint_v by_o christ_n to_o be_v fisher_n of_o man_n do_v show_v the_o love_n to_o they_o 21.15_o that_o christ_n show_v to_o themselves_o before_o that_o if_o they_o be_v man_n of_o god_n indeed_o they_o will_v lay_v open_a to_o they_o their_o treasure_n which_o they_o have_v gather_v out_o of_o the_o hoard_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o impart_v the_o same_o unto_o they_o for_o although_o many_o of_o that_o profession_n i_o mean_v the_o ministry_n
that_o be_v first_o such_o a_o heart_n as_o they_o may_v fear_v he_o for_o therefore_o their_o answer_n be_v dislike_v although_o their_o word_n be_v good_a because_o they_o proceed_v not_o from_o such_o a_o heart_n but_o this_o speech_n of_o the_o lord_n in_o this_o manner_n utter_v raise_v a_o doubt_n in_o the_o hearer_n what_o he_o shall_v mean_v by_o wish_v such_o a_o heart_n as_o though_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n can_v not_o grow_v in_o any_o heart_n and_o likewise_o come_v from_o it_o and_o if_o it_o be_v so_o what_o heart_n be_v that_o he_o wish_v unto_o they_o to_o the_o which_o may_v be_v answer_v that_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n and_o obedience_n to_o his_o commandment_n do_v not_o come_v from_o every_o heart_n neither_o do_v such_o fruit_n grow_v in_o every_o garden_n note_v heart_n and_o it_o must_v be_v such_o a_o heart_n indeed_o as_o can_v be_v match_v neither_o have_v any_o fellow_n or_o companion_n but_o what_o manner_n of_o heart_n be_v that_o you_o will_v say_v you_o do_v not_o understand_v what_o he_o mean_v i_o answer_v therefore_o further_o that_o by_o such_o a_o heart_n he_o mean_v in_o one_o word_n a_o heart_n convert_v to_o god_n more_o particular_o our_o saviour_n a_o good_a heart_n which_o only_o 6.46_o and_o no_o other_o can_v bring_v forth_o good_a thing_n for_o so_o he_o say_v a_o good_a man_n out_o of_o the_o good_a treasure_n of_o his_o heart_n bring_v forth_o good_a thing_n and_o contrariwise_o so_o that_o if_o the_o heart_n be_v good_a that_o be_v true_o turn_v to_o god_n than_o it_o be_v fit_v for_o that_o which_o god_n here_o wish_v to_o his_o people_n that_o be_v to_o fear_v he_o and_o keep_v his_o commandment_n and_o not_o else_o now_o for_o proof_n that_o it_o must_v be_v thus_o sin_n the_o scripture_n be_v clear_a and_o plentiful_a as_o first_o that_o the_o heart_n must_v be_v wound_v for_o sin_n and_o break_v with_o sorrow_n and_o fear_n till_o it_o be_v sick_a again_o be_v prove_v by_o the_o word_n of_o our_o saviour_n where_o he_o say_v the_o whole_a have_v no_o need_n of_o the_o physician_n but_o the_o sick_a 2.37_o and_o they_o in_o the_o act_n be_v prick_v in_o conscience_n for_o their_o woeful_a estate_n before_o they_o come_v to_o peter_n to_o ask_v how_o they_o may_v be_v heal_v but_o then_o they_o come_v to_o he_o and_o the_o other_o apostle_n though_o they_o have_v rail_v on_o they_o before_o and_o say_v man_n and_o brethren_n what_o shall_v we_o do_v as_o if_o they_o shall_v have_v say_v in_o this_o our_o distress_n and_o despair_v in_o ourselves_o what_o help_n can_v you_o minister_v unto_o we_o or_o ease_v unto_o our_o soul_n this_o contrition_n and_o sorrow_n be_v one_o of_o the_o three_o thing_n which_o help_v to_o make_v the_o evil_a heart_n good_a and_o yet_o hold_v of_o it_o in_o slavery_n and_o bondage_n for_o which_o cause_n it_o be_v call_v of_o the_o apostle_n the_o spirit_n of_o bondage_n 8.15_o but_o this_o be_v right_o use_v make_v a_o most_o direct_a way_n to_o the_o renew_v and_o change_v of_o the_o heart_n that_o it_o may_v be_v good_a adjoin_v to_o proceed_v therefore_o the_o second_o thing_n require_v to_o make_v the_o heart_n good_a be_v faith_n unfeigned_a that_o the_o afflict_a mind_n may_v see_v and_o believe_v the_o sin_n of_o it_o to_o be_v pardon_v to_o the_o ease_n and_o quiet_v of_o it_o which_o then_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o it_o and_o most_o earnest_o desire_v it_o and_o the_o lord_n have_v give_v a_o free_a grant_n of_o it_o unto_o such_o as_o be_v thus_o prepare_v for_o it_o by_o earnest_n desire_v it_o 31._o even_o as_o in_o the_o forementioned_a place_n the_o lord_n say_v i_o be_o a_o physician_n for_o the_o sick_a 7.37_o and_o in_o another_o place_n i_o will_v give_v the_o water_n of_o life_n unto_o such_o as_o thirst_n which_o the_o sick_a and_o trouble_a conscience_n hear_v count_v it_o the_o happy_a and_o welcome_a tiding_n that_o can_v be_v bring_v unto_o it_o and_o so_o by_o due_a and_o advise_v consider_v it_o lay_v hold_v of_o it_o though_o weak_o and_o by_o little_a and_o little_a the_o lord_n enable_v the_o party_n and_o so_o believe_v that_o it_o be_v as_o effectual_o offer_v to_o he_o as_o to_o any_o of_o god_n child_n that_o have_v already_o embrace_v it_o and_o this_o mighty_o work_v both_o to_o ease_v and_o quiet_a and_o also_o to_o quicken_v he_o who_o be_v before_o so_o cast_v down_o and_o trouble_v both_o and_o thus_o to_o pass_v to_o the_o three_o thing_n requisite_a to_o the_o reform_v and_o rectify_v of_o the_o heart_n that_o the_o true_a fear_n of_o god_n may_v proceed_v from_o thence_o the_o party_n be_v thus_o persuade_v of_o the_o love_n of_o god_n and_o the_o free_a remission_n of_o sin_n and_o what_o unlooked_v for_o contentment_n he_o have_v thereby_o break_v forth_o into_o the_o praise_n of_o god_n with_o admire_v his_o kindness_n and_o say_v what_o thanks_n shall_v i_o give_v unto_o the_o lord_n for_o his_o unspeakable_a mercy_n unto_o for_o the_o present_a only_a but_o come_v from_o so_o good_a a_o foundation_n and_o ground_n sanctify_v he_o effectual_o by_o work_v a_o dislike_n of_o evil_a because_o it_o be_v evil_a and_o a_o hearty_a and_o unfeigned_a love_n of_o all_o goodness_n which_o grace_n be_v thus_o wrought_v in_o he_o be_v the_o three_o thing_n require_v to_o the_o change_n of_o the_o heart_n and_o turn_v of_o it_o unto_o god_n and_o this_o must_v go_v with_o faith_n as_o we_o be_v teach_v in_o the_o epistle_n to_o the_o corinthian_n where_o he_o say_v 7.1_o see_v we_o have_v these_o promise_n let_v we_o cleanse_v ourselves_o from_o all_o filthiness_n of_o the_o flesh_n and_o spirit_n and_o grow_v up_o to_o full_a holiness_n in_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n with_o this_o agree_v that_o of_o saint_n john_n as_o god_n here_o wish_v the_o people_n when_o he_o say_v oh_o that_o there_o be_v such_o a_o heart_n in_o they_o now_o that_o the_o christian_a reader_n may_v not_o be_v deceive_v in_o judge_v whether_o he_o have_v such_o a_o heart_n or_o not_o i_o will_v add_v some_o caveat_n about_o these_o three_o property_n which_o make_v the_o heart_n good_a that_o he_o examine_v and_o observe_v they_o may_v see_v whether_o he_o have_v they_o or_o no._n and_o to_o begin_v let_v he_o know_v that_o about_o the_o first_o of_o they_o conscience_n which_o be_v prick_v or_o wound_v of_o conscience_n and_o fear_n of_o god_n displeasure_n for_o the_o same_o i_o give_v these_o two_o caveat_n or_o watchword_n the_o one_o be_v this_o that_o if_o god_n press_v our_o conscience_n with_o the_o powerful_a preach_n of_o his_o word_n note_v and_o accuse_v and_o arrest_v they_o thereby_o that_o we_o in_o no_o wise_n resist_v that_o work_n of_o grace_n but_o submit_v ourselves_o thereto_o see_v he_o use_v shall_v otherwise_o never_o know_v how_o exceed_o we_o be_v behold_v to_o he_o for_o the_o variety_n of_o grace_n and_o good_a thing_n which_o we_o receive_v thereby_o from_o he_o as_o faith_n patience_n the_o forgiveness_n of_o sin_n etc._n etc._n 27.7_o for_o so_o solomon_n say_v in_o the_o proverb_n the_o person_n that_o be_v full_a despise_v a_o honey_n comb_n but_o unto_o the_o to_o be_v enjoy_v or_o a_o sure_a grant_n of_o it_o if_o we_o can_v partake_v it_o here_o that_o in_o the_o life_n to_o come_v we_o shall_v have_v it_o and_o we_o be_v not_o to_o think_v that_o when_o we_o have_v obtain_v any_o gift_n or_o grace_n of_o god_n that_o we_o be_v command_v still_o to_o be_v ask_v of_o one_o and_o the_o same_o thing_n which_o to_o do_v be_v against_o common_a sense_n and_o reason_n but_o for_o a_o great_a measure_n of_o it_o as_o increase_v of_o faith_n love_n and_o patience_n when_o we_o have_v already_o receive_v a_o part_n in_o they_o and_o for_o such_o thing_n as_o we_o yet_o want_v with_o the_o like_a appetite_n to_o desire_n and_o thirst_n for_o they_o as_o at_o the_o first_o anguish_n of_o mind_n and_o wound_n of_o conscience_n we_o do_v long_o for_o the_o forgiveness_n of_o our_o sin_n and_o this_o of_o the_o time_n how_o long_o we_o ought_v to_o thirst_n which_o be_v the_o three_o point_n in_o this_o first_o part_n the_o four_o follow_v namely_o how_o we_o shall_v come_v to_o thirst_v and_o how_o it_o shall_v be_v uphold_v thirst_n which_o be_v such_o a_o worthy_a gift_n of_o god_n have_v not_o need_v to_o be_v neglect_v but_o as_o a_o appetite_n to_o bodily_a food_n for_o the_o preserve_n of_o health_n be_v by_o all_o mean_n to_o be_v maintain_v and_o seek_v the_o mean_n be_v neither_o costly_a nor_o hard_a to_o come_v by_o as_o in_o bodily_a dainty_n it_o fare_v but_o ready_a and_o at_o hand_n even_o to_o see_v our_o want_n in_o grace_n and_o emptiness_n thereof_o as_o how_o weak_a our_o faith_n be_v how_o faint_a our_o hope_n how_o cold_a our_o love_n and_o how_o hardly_o we_o have_v proof_n of_o our_o patience_n also_o to_o observe_v our_o corruption_n as_o touchinesse_n forwardness_n unclean_a desire_n wrath_n desire_v of_o revenge_n etc._n etc._n and_o in_o what_o bondage_n they_o hold_v us._n if_o we_o observe_v these_o in_o ourselves_o 2.2_o they_o will_v make_v we_o desire_v the_o sincere_a milk_n of_o the_o word_n to_o guide_v we_o aright_o also_o to_o watch_v and_o pray_v sigh_n and_o groan_n that_o we_o may_v resist_v the_o evil_a and_o nourish_v the_o good_a for_o as_o the_o husbandman_n by_o toil_v and_o sweat_v at_o hay_n and_o harvest_n provoke_v the_o bodily_a thirst_n so_o we_o labour_v with_o our_o heart_n to_o pluck_v up_o and_o to_o plant_v as_o there_o shall_v be_v cause_n shall_v thirst_v till_o we_o obtain_v that_o which_o we_o go_v about_o and_o desire_v and_o god_n who_o call_v we_o to_o it_o and_o promise_v large_o to_o satisfy_v we_o will_v not_o mock_v we_o but_o do_v as_o he_o have_v say_v that_o be_v to_o say_v satisfy_v our_o soul_n with_o good_a thing_n and_o thus_o we_o come_v to_o thirst_v but_o when_o we_o see_v our_o heart_n thus_o possess_v and_o take_v up_o with_o the_o fervent_a and_o constant_a desire_n of_o the_o good_a thing_n which_o we_o will_v have_v we_o must_v also_o be_v persuade_v to_o labour_v ready_o and_o willing_o as_o need_n shall_v require_v whether_o it_o be_v by_o prayer_n conference_n or_o the_o like_a to_o obtain_v they_o remember_v that_o which_o be_v say_v in_o the_o psalm_n 111.2_o that_o wisdom_n and_o so_o all_o the_o part_n thereof_o be_v to_o be_v seek_v out_o that_o be_v with_o all_o diligence_n of_o those_o that_o have_v pleasure_n therein_o but_o one_o objection_n here_o i_o will_v answer_v which_o trouble_v some_o and_o that_o be_v that_o they_o say_v in_o the_o beginning_n when_o man_n turn_v to_o god_n first_o they_o thirst_v and_o can_v be_v satisfy_v to_o their_o quiet_a and_o contentment_n but_o they_o see_v no_o such_o thing_n in_o they_o after_o i_o answer_v though_o all_o show_v it_o not_o after_o as_o they_o do_v at_o first_o by_o complain_v ask_v question_n and_o lament_v their_o want_n to_o other_o yet_o they_o long_v and_o thirst_v for_o that_o which_o they_o see_v needful_a for_o they_o and_o yet_o want_v but_o they_o do_v not_o show_v it_o so_o much_o and_o that_o be_v wisdom_n which_o other_o unexperienced_a and_o more_o weak_a in_o knowledge_n and_o faith_n can_v do_v but_o must_v show_v their_o thirst_a as_o i_o say_v and_o it_o may_v be_v perceive_v of_o themselves_o to_o be_v so_o by_o their_o daily_a care_n and_o diligence_n to_o nourish_v the_o old_a grace_n they_o have_v already_o and_o to_o obtain_v new_a and_o by_o the_o course_n of_o their_o life_n it_o may_v be_v perceive_v of_o other_o but_o if_o they_o grow_v full_a they_o be_v in_o ill_a case_n thus_o the_o first_o branch_n of_o the_o three_o in_o this_o first_o part_n have_v be_v handle_v namely_o who_o they_o be_v who_o god_n call_v out_o by_o the_o prophet_n from_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o people_n to_o take_v part_n in_o the_o best_a tiding_n that_o ever_o be_v or_o can_v be_v bring_v from_o he_o and_o that_o be_v thirst_n all_o such_o as_o thirst_v the_o second_o branch_n follow_v and_o that_o be_v what_o be_v the_o good_a thing_n that_o they_o shall_v have_v which_o thirst_n the_o benefit_n which_o they_o shall_v enjoy_v be_v answerable_a to_o their_o thirst_n
with_o affliction_n and_o those_o that_o they_o have_v lay_v on_o they_o be_v not_o sore_a nor_o grievous_a therefore_o when_o any_o come_v upon_o they_o of_o any_o weight_n indeed_o they_o cast_v well_o as_o to_o the_o jew_n the_o glad_a tiding_n of_o salvation_n even_o this_o sort_n of_o people_n may_v have_v no_o small_a encouragement_n by_o read_v these_o sermon_n and_o especial_o those_o among_o the_o rest_n which_o show_v how_o they_o that_o wander_v out_o of_o the_o right_a way_n may_v return_v and_o come_v home_o unto_o it_o again_o some_o of_o these_o sermon_n do_v aim_v at_o this_o to_o keep_v such_o as_o be_v draw_v out_o of_o their_o sinful_a course_n already_o to_o the_o certainty_n of_o salvation_n and_o to_o keep_v such_o steadfast_a in_o their_o faith_n hope_n and_o repentance_n and_o that_o they_o may_v not_o fall_v from_o they_o and_o other_o some_o of_o they_o serve_v to_o help_v forward_o all_o such_o so_o establish_v that_o they_o may_v grow_v in_o knowledge_n and_o grace_n and_o so_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n beseem_v the_o gospel_n and_o i_o will_v they_o may_v find_v no_o less_o favour_n and_o acceptation_n with_o the_o reader_n than_o i_o be_o sure_a they_o find_v with_o they_o who_o hear_v they_o preach_v i_o have_v show_v what_o the_o matter_n be_v that_o be_v handle_v in_o these_o sermon_n now_o i_o will_v show_v my_o reason_n why_o i_o have_v gather_v not_o one_o but_o sundry_a of_o the_o same_o argument_n together_o and_o set_v they_o forth_o so_o and_o after_o i_o will_v declare_v to_o thou_o in_o what_o order_n i_o place_v they_o in_o this_o treatise_n and_o why_o the_o first_o reason_n why_o i_o set_v down_o many_o in_o one_o book_n of_o the_o same_o argument_n and_o not_o of_o diverse_a be_v this_o for_o that_o this_o matter_n and_o doctrine_n of_o the_o conversion_n of_o a_o sinner_n be_v very_o hard_a to_o be_v perceive_v and_o discern_v of_o many_o hearer_n and_o especial_o so_o as_o they_o may_v clear_o see_v how_o to_o trace_v the_o way_n and_o go_v in_o it_o therefore_o that_o which_o can_v not_o so_o easy_o be_v perceive_v in_o one_o sermon_n i_o have_v think_v good_a to_o lay_v forth_o in_o many_o and_o out_o of_o diverse_a text_n of_o scripture_n which_o tend_v all_o to_o this_o end_n to_o wit_n to_o set_v down_o the_o conversion_n of_o a_o sinner_n to_o god_n do_v give_v more_o light_n in_o this_o matter_n and_o offer_v occasion_n of_o more_o thing_n about_o it_o than_o one_o alone_o can_v do_v these_o therefore_o be_v read_v with_o consideration_n may_v through_o god_n blessing_n make_v this_o point_n clear_a who_o how_o and_o when_o a_o man_n be_v convert_v and_o make_v he_o able_a to_o try_v whither_o he_o himself_o be_v so_o or_o no._n and_o if_o one_o be_v well_o ground_v in_o the_o doctrine_n that_o teach_v this_o and_o have_v the_o use_n of_o this_o he_o shall_v much_o the_o easy_o attain_v to_o further_a knowledge_n and_o consequent_o to_o the_o use_n thereof_o both_o which_o be_v mean_o and_o of_o few_o attain_v to_o see_v so_o few_o be_v well_o settle_v in_o the_o other_o the_o next_o reason_n of_o this_o my_o thus_o do_v be_v because_o this_o doctrine_n of_o the_o conversion_n of_o a_o sinner_n be_v but_o little_a and_o too_o seldom_o teach_v i_o mean_v all_o the_o part_n of_o it_o be_v seldom_o set_v down_o together_o especial_o at_o one_o time_n and_o in_o one_o sermon_n all_o which_o be_v meet_v to_o be_v do_v and_o oft_o the_o weak_a capacity_n slippery_a memory_n and_o many_o other_o defect_n in_o the_o most_o hearer_n require_v it_o and_o that_o they_o may_v see_v both_o how_o far_o they_o be_v from_o conversion_n while_o they_o be_v in_o their_o first_o condition_n of_o ignorance_n and_o unbelief_n and_o how_o they_o be_v to_o be_v bring_v to_o it_o and_o also_o how_o contrary_a their_o heart_n and_o life_n shall_v be_v to_o that_o they_o be_v before_o when_o they_o be_v convert_v these_o part_n of_o it_o be_v seldom_o handle_v altogether_o in_o preach_v though_o one_o sometime_o another_o of_o they_o another_o time_n be_v teach_v and_o deliver_v but_o it_o be_v a_o long_a time_n though_o the_o word_n be_v diligent_o preach_v as_o in_o few_o place_n it_o be_v before_o the_o most_o part_n of_o the_o hearer_n be_v able_a to_o lay_v one_o part_n and_o point_n of_o it_o with_o the_o other_o and_o to_o make_v the_o whole_a work_n of_o conversion_n of_o they_o all_o and_o to_o add_v the_o three_o reason_n see_v all_o that_o the_o people_n know_v and_o practice_v without_o conversion_n be_v nothing_o i_o mean_v either_o please_a to_o god_n or_o profitable_a to_o salvation_n unto_o themselves_o they_o may_v i_o deny_v not_o know_v many_o point_n and_o learn_v sundry_a instruction_n as_o concern_v the_o letter_n but_o to_o know_v so_o as_o they_o believe_v without_o which_o faith_n it_o be_v impossible_a for_o they_o to_o please_v god_n they_o can_v without_o conversion_n and_o to_o practice_v so_o in_o their_o life_n as_o that_o they_o may_v be_v say_v to_o repent_v and_o live_v holy_o without_o which_o they_o shall_v perish_v and_o never_o see_v the_o lord_n that_o be_v impossible_a without_o the_o same_o conversion_n for_o these_o cause_n and_o some_o other_o of_o which_o this_o be_v not_o the_o least_o that_o by_o experience_n i_o have_v see_v great_a fruit_n come_v of_o this_o doctrine_n diligent_o and_o much_o teach_v and_o little_a fruit_n where_o it_o have_v not_o be_v much_o in_o use_n for_o such_o cause_n i_o say_v i_o have_v of_o purpose_n set_v out_o many_o sermon_n of_o this_o argument_n desire_v that_o the_o people_n may_v be_v make_v better_o acquaint_v with_o it_o and_o that_o such_o preacher_n as_o think_v i_o worthy_a to_o be_v hear_v in_o this_o request_n will_v frame_v themselves_o to_o teach_v it_o in_o their_o own_o or_o in_o other_o place_n where_o they_o come_v as_o for_o they_o that_o fear_v they_o shall_v glut_v the_o people_n with_o beat_v thus_o upon_o the_o same_o thing_n as_o though_o they_o can_v preach_v no_o other_o i_o answer_v if_o we_o preach_v to_o the_o end_n the_o people_n may_v practice_v that_o which_o we_o teach_v and_o if_o the_o people_n also_o make_v use_n of_o that_o which_o they_o learn_v about_o this_o matter_n it_o shall_v be_v find_v so_o hard_a and_o precious_a to_o know_v themselves_o convert_v that_o they_o shall_v themselves_o desire_v that_o doctrine_n concern_v it_o to_o be_v teach_v again_o and_o again_o and_o namely_o of_o faith_n and_o repentance_n rather_o than_o to_o be_v weary_a of_o it_o for_o they_o shall_v see_v that_o when_o the_o same_o thing_n shall_v be_v teach_v out_o of_o new_a text_n even_o the_o old_a matter_n shall_v be_v in_o manner_n new_a to_o they_o now_o it_o follow_v to_o show_v why_o these_o text_n be_v set_v down_o in_o the_o order_n in_o which_o they_o be_v place_v in_o the_o treatise_n the_o first_o text_n be_v act_n 16.24_o and_o matth._n 24.12.13_o and_o the_o sermon_n on_o both_o tend_v direct_o to_o show_v how_o a_o sinner_n be_v convert_v except_o the_o begin_n of_o the_o sermon_n in_o the_o 16._o of_o the_o act_n which_o yet_o make_v a_o way_n to_o the_o doctrine_n of_o conversion_n in_o the_o story_n of_o the_o jailer_n and_o in_o those_o two_o sermon_n the_o reader_n may_v see_v the_o three_o part_n of_o conversion_n and_o diverse_a of_o
duty_n i_o say_v be_v not_o to_o be_v neglect_v even_o as_o the_o jailer_n here_o do_v as_o he_o can_v perform_v all_o these_o and_o where_o that_o help_n be_v minister_v mutual_o among_o christian_n as_o well_o in_o the_o best_a thing_n as_o in_o the_o mean_a much_o outward_a and_o inward_a peace_n be_v there_o enjoy_v good_a example_n show_v as_o a_o fruit_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o good_a hope_n that_o many_o shall_v be_v gain_v and_o bring_v thereby_o unto_o it_o note_n and_o here_o i_o do_v special_o desire_v all_o people_n of_o god_n to_o hear_v i_o in_o two_o thing_n most_o needful_a to_o this_o purpose_n the_o one_o that_o such_o as_o be_v of_o more_o hard_a froward_a austere_a and_o impatient_a disposition_n and_o yet_o religious_a will_v take_v a_o little_a pain_n to_o bridle_v and_o subdue_v the_o same_o and_o with_o gravity_n and_o integrity_n to_o be_v more_o amiable_a that_o so_o they_o may_v discourage_v none_o of_o the_o weak_a sort_n the_o second_o that_o such_o as_o receive_v help_n of_o their_o brethren_n will_v not_o burden_v they_o and_o weary_a and_o discourage_v they_o from_o such_o duty_n do_v by_o their_o undiscreet_a importunity_n look_v for_o that_o which_o be_v beyond_o their_o compass_n for_o they_o to_o ask_v or_o the_o other_o to_o grant_v and_o yet_o to_o judge_v and_o censure_v they_o for_o not_o yield_v unto_o they_o fruit_n now_o the_o last_o fruit_n of_o the_o jailers_n faith_n and_o that_o be_v touch_v his_o household_n follow_v that_o he_o rejoice_v that_o they_o also_o believe_v in_o the_o lord_n therein_o he_o declare_v himself_o to_o be_v a_o right_a kind_n and_o love_a master_n even_o as_o he_o be_v a_o sound_n and_o good_a christian_a and_o also_o that_o he_o be_v become_v a_o faithful_a friend_n unto_o christ_n his_o master_n 159.10_o who_o so_o count_v of_o all_o they_o that_o rejoice_v at_o the_o conversion_n of_o a_o sinner_n even_o so_o such_o master_n may_v have_v good_a hope_n of_o their_o true_a profit_v and_o rejoice_v that_o desire_v to_o have_v their_o household_n to_o be_v a_o little_a church_n and_o believer_n in_o christ_n and_o all_o other_o may_v know_v that_o christ_n account_v high_o of_o these_o who_o rejoice_v for_o they_o that_o of_o great_a sinner_n be_v convert_v to_o god_n and_o thus_o to_o make_v a_o end_n of_o the_o whole_a story_n as_o we_o will_v judge_v of_o the_o stature_n and_o proportion_n of_o a_o giant_n by_o his_o hand_n or_o leg_n so_o we_o may_v judge_v of_o the_o jailers_n whole_a course_n of_o life_n by_o these_o part_n of_o it_o that_o he_o be_v make_v a_o rare_a pattern_n in_o faith_n and_o godliness_n of_o a_o most_o barbarous_a and_o profane_a person_n now_o wherefore_o say_v i_o this_o but_o to_o the_o end_n that_o many_o who_o as_o yet_o be_v estrange_v from_o god_n and_o enemy_n to_o he_o even_o a_o far_o off_o may_v yet_o at_o least_o bethink_v and_o resolve_v themselves_o to_o return_v again_o unto_o he_o and_o never_o to_o leave_v off_o till_o they_o be_v true_o come_v home_o and_o have_v more_o in_o they_o than_o any_o reprobate_n that_o may_v fall_v away_o again_o can_v have_v two_o sermon_n upon_o matth_n 24.12.13_o preach_v by_o richard_n rogers_n verse_n 12_o and_o because_o iniquity_n shall_v be_v increase_v the_o love_n of_o many_o shall_v be_v cold_a but_o he_o that_o endure_v to_o the_o end_n he_o shall_v be_v save_v sermon_n as_o i_o use_v and_o think_v it_o expedient_a so_o to_o do_v in_o preach_v a_o sermon_n to_o acquaint_v the_o hearer_n first_o with_o the_o thing_n which_o most_o into_o their_o heart_n of_o which_o sort_n some_o have_v be_v discourage_v and_o have_v begin_v to_o faint_v and_o to_o wax_v cold_a and_o some_o hold_n on_o their_o course_n commendablie_o though_o these_o be_v the_o few_o therefore_o to_o all_o these_o three_o sort_n i_o will_v direct_v my_o speech_n that_o the_o first_o may_v repent_v betimes_o and_o return_v to_o the_o lord_n the_o second_o may_v rise_v out_o of_o their_o fall_n and_o stand_v fast_o in_o the_o good_a estate_n wherein_o they_o have_v begin_v and_o the_o last_o may_v hold_v on_o in_o their_o first_o love_n and_o continue_v obtain_v it_o and_o come_v out_o of_o they_o which_o be_v the_o right_a use_n of_o know_v it_o but_o if_o they_o still_o go_v forward_o in_o their_o evil_a course_n they_o may_v show_v themselves_o to_o be_v as_o they_o be_v that_o be_v contemner_n and_o that_o the_o world_n shall_v be_v full_a of_o iniquity_n in_o these_o latter_a day_n of_o we_o it_o be_v prove_v by_o two_o reason_n experience_n the_o one_o draw_v from_o scripture_n the_o other_o from_o experience_n the_o spirit_n of_o god_n speak_v thus_o in_o the_o scripture_n 24.37_o that_o as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o day_n of_o noah_n so_o shall_v it_o be_v in_o the_o come_n of_o the_o son_n of_o man_n for_o as_o before_o the_o flood_n come_v they_o do_v eat_v and_o drink_v marry_v and_o give_v in_o marriage_n until_o the_o day_n that_o noah_n enter_v into_o the_o ark_n and_o know_v nothing_o until_o the_o flood_n come_v and_o take_v they_o all_o away_o so_o shall_v it_o then_o be_v whereby_o christ_n show_v that_o in_o sex_n as_o man_n or_o woman_n and_o by_o their_o estate_n and_o condition_n as_o the_o rich_a and_o the_o poor_a the_o mighty_a and_o the_o mean_a to_o say_v a_o little_a of_o every_o one_o what_o stoutness_n pride_n disobedience_n be_v to_o be_v see_v every_o where_o in_o youth_n who_o be_v but_o as_o the_o flower_n that_o to_o morrow_n wither_v yet_o lift_v up_o their_o crest_n as_o though_o they_o be_v rivet_v into_o a_o long_a life_n and_o have_v a_o promise_n of_o eternity_n here_o which_o if_o it_o be_v yet_o have_v they_o but_o a_o estate_n in_o misery_n but_o i_o may_v not_o stay_v to_o make_v large_a discourse_n of_o every_o one_o man_n what_o ignorant_a senselesnes_n to_o conceive_v knowledge_n of_o heavenly_a thing_n be_v in_o the_o age_a and_o as_o much_o unwillingnes_n to_o learn_v and_o what_o else_o but_o forwardness_n malice_n and_o a_o insatiable_a desire_n of_o get_v while_o yet_o they_o have_v more_o than_o one_o leg_n in_o the_o grave_n in_o so_o much_o that_o he_o who_o shall_v hope_v of_o the_o salvation_n of_o the_o most_o of_o they_o must_v stretch_v out_o his_o charity_n beyond_o his_o warrant_n and_o ground_n as_o for_o the_o wealthy_a rich._n what_o be_v their_o occupation_n and_o practice_n but_o to_o seek_v with_o might_n and_o main_a to_o grow_v more_o wealthy_a mind_v that_o labour_n as_o if_o they_o seek_v after_o heaven_n itself_o in_o the_o mean_a while_n not_o regard_v the_o multitude_n of_o those_o that_o want_v to_o serve_v the_o necessity_n of_o they_o with_o their_o superfluity_n neither_o embrace_v the_o christian_a life_n ever_o the_o more_o for_o all_o the_o good_n they_o have_v but_o turn_v aside_o from_o it_o rather_o and_o as_o little_a longing_n after_o heaven_n itself_o which_o kind_n of_o life_n while_o they_o so_o please_v themselves_o in_o what_o wise_a man_n will_v judge_v any_o otherwise_o of_o they_o but_o that_o they_o think_v they_o shall_v never_o die_v or_o that_o they_o shall_v come_v again_o there_o in_o they_o to_o their_o flock_n what_o diligence_n in_o preach_v and_o private_a study_n and_o read_n and_o for_o their_o live_n with_o they_o if_o so_o be_v they_o do_v live_v with_o they_o what_o be_v their_o converse_v with_o they_o but_o either_o in_o hollow_a peace_n and_o feign_a love_n in_o game_a and_o carnal_a merry_a make_n or_o else_o they_o live_v among_o they_o in_o strangeness_n hate_v one_o another_o and_o in_o suit_n and_o controversy_n but_o what_o fellowship_n have_v the_o people_n with_o they_o for_o their_o instruction_n and_o edification_n but_o that_o to_o their_o exceed_a good_a like_v and_o so_o as_o in_o no_o other_o they_o can_v find_v the_o like_a by_o many_o degree_n and_o yet_o this_o be_v not_o to_o be_v understand_v of_o outward_a prosperity_n peace_n and_o welfare_n in_o riches_n honour_n and_o such_o like_a simple_o but_o conditional_o so_o far_o as_o they_o be_v good_a for_o god_n child_n whereof_o the_o godly_a for_o the_o most_o part_n be_v void_a and_o this_o hungry_a scramble_a world_n will_v keep_v they_o far_o enough_o off_o from_o they_o and_o yet_o this_o be_v no_o cause_n of_o grief_n to_o they_o neither_o god_n provide_v better_a for_o they_o that_o they_o shall_v be_v less_o wed_v to_o this_o world_n but_o god_n principal_o mean_v hereby_o that_o he_o will_v make_v their_o life_n please_v and_o practice_n for_o any_o other_o there_o be_v three_o especial_a cause_n repentance_n why_o all_o shall_v haste_v to_o repent_v at_o the_o first_o hear_n so_o soon_o as_o they_o can_v be_v able_a to_o discern_v the_o authority_n and_o power_n of_o the_o word_n the_o first_o be_v because_o if_o we_o do_v it_o not_o at_o the_o first_o perhaps_o we_o shall_v never_o after_n and_o especial_o if_o any_o such_o of_o we_o be_v caviller_n and_o resister_n of_o it_o i_o deny_v not_o 20.5.6_o but_o the_o lord_n call_v at_o the_o nine_o and_o eleven_o hour_n which_o refuse_v to_o come_v at_o the_o seven_o but_o who_o be_v so_o desperate_a as_o to_o jeopard_v his_o happiness_n by_o so_o bold_a a_o adventure_n see_v the_o wicked_a and_o the_o deceiver_n wax_v worse_o and_o worse_o 3.13_o and_o he_o that_o be_v not_o fit_a to_o be_v urge_v to_o day_n be_v like_a to_o be_v less_o fit_a to_o morrow_n for_o who_o know_v that_o he_o shall_v have_v mind_n or_o mean_n or_o if_o he_o have_v both_o yet_o whither_o he_o shall_v have_v opportunity_n by_o health_n and_o freedom_n from_o pain_n and_o disease_n to_o use_v and_o enjoy_v they_o and_o although_o he_o do_v yet_o whether_o the_o lord_n will_v bless_v they_o in_o all_o which_o respect_v the_o wise_a man_n adulse_v thus_o remember_v thy_o maker_n o_o man_n in_o the_o day_n of_o thy_o youth_n 12.1_o while_o the_o evil_a day_n come_v not_o scornful_a and_o the_o caviller_n who_o against_o his_o knowledge_n have_v resist_v the_o truth_n and_o strive_v against_o it_o i_o have_v rare_o in_o my_o observation_n see_v but_o their_o death_n have_v be_v like_o their_o life_n without_o any_o pregnant_a sign_n of_o repentance_n the_o second_o cause_n why_o man_n shall_v be_v desirous_a to_o convert_v true_o to_o god_n at_o the_o first_o hear_v of_o the_o gospel_n be_v this_o that_o though_o we_o may_v be_v sure_a to_o do_v it_o at_o the_o last_o whereas_o yet_o in_o all_o experience_n late_o repent_v be_v dangerous_a what_o wise_a man_n will_v be_v content_a to_o go_v without_o the_o fruit_n of_o it_o in_o the_o mean_a season_n no_o if_o it_o be_v but_o for_o one_o day_n when_o he_o may_v enjoy_v it_o 84.11_o see_v one_o day_n in_o the_o house_n of_o god_n be_v better_a than_o a_o thousand_o in_o any_o estate_n whatsoever_o out_o of_o a_o godly_a life_n and_o thus_o it_o shall_v be_v see_v thus_o it_o may_v be_v with_o a_o true_a or_o false_a they_o cry_v out_o in_o another_o manner_n thus_o oh_o these_o be_v your_o professor_n do_v you_o not_o see_v what_o fruit_n they_o bring_v forth_o so_o they_o who_o be_v purpose_v to_o take_v no_o good_a by_o they_o can_v always_o lay_v stop_n in_o their_o own_o way_n and_o while_o they_o be_v at_o that_o point_n it_o be_v no_o marvel_n though_o they_o set_v not_o much_o by_o repentance_n which_o be_v that_o whereof_o god_n people_n have_v their_o name_n that_o they_o be_v call_v repentant_a or_o godly_a the_o three_o reason_n why_o such_o have_v the_o godly_a life_n in_o no_o better_a account_n and_o reckon_n be_v for_o that_o they_o know_v little_a nay_o they_o be_v far_o off_o from_o it_o what_o joy_n and_o comfort_v it_o bring_v with_o it_o neither_o the_o sweet_a and_o holy_a peace_n which_o they_o who_o live_v godly_a do_v enjoy_v for_o solomon_n true_o set_v down_o that_o he_o that_o be_v a_o stranger_n from_o the_o life_n of_o god_n people_n 14.3_o shall_v not_o be_v partaker_n of_o their_o joy_n neither_o as_o s._n john_n say_v can_v any_o know_v what_o that_o song_n mean_v which_o make_v the_o godly_a merry_a and_o joyful_a but_o themselves_o which_o be_v the_o lord_n redeem_v one_o which_o if_o they_o do_v know_v they_o will_v as_o our_o saviour_n say_v to_o the_o woman_n of_o samaria_n first_o have_v ask_v it_o of_o he_o 4.10_o as_o the_o thing_n that_o be_v most_o precious_a 11.25_o and_o will_v have_v prefer_v it_o before_o the_o pleasure_n of_o sin_n which_o yet_o last_v but_o for_o a_o season_n and_o this_o be_v say_v of_o the_o second_o point_n in_o the_o second_o part_n namely_o of_o repent_v betimes_o now_o this_o repent_v which_o christ_n here_o speak_v of_o part_n what_o it_o be_v which_o be_v the_o last_o point_n in_o this_o second_o part_n this_z i_o say_v let_v we_o examine_v a_o little_a and_o so_o make_v a_o end_n his_o word_n be_v these_o they_o will_v have_v repent_v in_o sackcloth_n and_o ash_n this_o must_v needs_o be_v as_o we_o may_v well_o gather_v by_o his_o own_o word_n a_o matter_n of_o great_a importance_n and_o that_o the_o repent_v which_o man_n common_o so_o call_v be_v nothing_o less_o than_o that_o which_o he_o here_o mean_v and_o speak_v of_o for_o the_o lord_n jesus_n in_o say_v they_o will_v have_v repent_v in_o sackcloth_n and_o ash_n mean_v that_o they_o will_v have_v do_v it_o hearty_o and_o sound_o as_o these_o outward_a ceremony_n do_v testify_v such_o a_o thing_n and_o he_o speak_v so_o because_o it_o be_v well_o know_v to_o they_o to_o who_o he_o speak_v that_o they_o who_o repent_v unfeigned_o in_o time_n past_a show_v it_o that_o way_n though_o he_o do_v not_o thereby_o justify_v all_o to_o be_v
for_o god_n or_o any_o godly_a mirth_n to_o make_v they_o merry_a no_o need_n therefore_o to_o exhort_v the_o wicked_a to_o rejoice_v 22._o that_o be_v even_o surfeit_v already_o with_o joy_n and_o pleasure_n but_o the_o righteous_a that_o mourn_n the_o righteous_a that_o be_v heavy_a these_o have_v need_n to_o have_v god_n and_o his_o servant_n to_o comfort_n and_o cheer_v they_o up_o object_n 1_o but_o here_o it_o may_v be_v reply_v the_o righteous_a man_n have_v indeed_o need_v of_o this_o joy_n whereunto_o the_o apostle_n exhort_v they_o but_o how_o be_v it_o possible_a that_o the_o righteous_a so_o beset_v and_o compass_v with_o trouble_n can_v rejoice_v for_o this_o seem_v to_o be_v a_o strange_a paradox_n and_o opinion_n to_o the_o world_n that_o the_o righteous_a can_v in_o the_o midst_n of_o so_o many_o trouble_n and_o cross_n find_v any_o matter_n to_o take_v joy_n in_o answ_n but_o yet_o if_o we_o will_v but_o open_v our_o eye_n we_o shall_v easy_o see_v that_o the_o righteous_a man_n and_o he_o alone_o have_v cause_n even_o in_o his_o great_a trouble_n to_o rejoice_v and_o be_v merry_a and_o even_o to_o triumph_v for_o joy_n of_o heart_n for_o what_o though_o the_o world_n be_v bend_v and_o band_v with_o all_o the_o spite_n and_o hate_v it_o can_v against_o he_o yet_o even_o in_o this_o have_v he_o more_o cause_n of_o joy_n then_o of_o sorrow_n read_v and_o mark_v to_o that_o end_n the_o word_n of_o our_o saviour_n christ_n who_o be_v truth_n itself_o matth._n 5.2.12_o 5.2.12_o bless_a be_v you_o when_o man_n revile_v and_o persecute_v your_o and_o say_v all_o manner_n of_o evil_a against_o you_o for_o my_o sake_n false_o rejoice_v and_o be_v glad_a for_o great_a be_v your_o reward_n in_o heaven_n for_o so_o persecute_v they_o the_o prophet_n which_o be_v before_o you_o to_o be_v hate_v of_o the_o world_n to_o be_v revile_v rejoice_v persecute_v slander_v mark_v it_o be_v a_o sign_n y_fw-fr t_o we_o be_v bless_v and_o therefore_o a_o cause_n to_o make_v we_o to_o rejoice_v nay_o we_o see_v that_o all_o the_o hatred_n revile_v persecution_n and_o slander_n they_o can_v raise_v do_v help_n to_o increase_v our_o reward_n and_o the_o brightness_n of_o our_o glory_n and_o the_o weight_n of_o our_o crown_n in_o heaven_n nay_o hereby_o be_v we_o assure_v that_o we_o be_v in_o the_o straight_a and_o beat_a way_n to_o heaven_n for_o thus_o say_v our_o saviour_n they_o hate_v they_o revile_v they_o persecute_v the_o prophet_n which_o be_v before_o you_o as_o though_o he_o shall_v say_v by_o this_o you_o may_v know_v that_o you_o be_v in_o the_o direct_a way_n to_o heaven_n for_o thus_o have_v all_o the_o prophet_n before_o you_o pass_v thither_o and_o so_o we_o see_v since_o our_o saviour_n christ_n to_o have_v pass_v this_o way_n into_o glory_n and_o by_o the_o same_o to_o have_v carry_v to_o the_o same_o glory_n all_o his_o apostle_n martyr_n and_o holy_a man_n that_o have_v live_v and_o die_v under_o the_o gospel_n behold_v then_o in_o a_o word_n what_o joy_n even_o the_o hatred_n of_o the_o world_n and_o wicked_a man_n afford_v unto_o we_o and_o that_o be_v that_o our_o heavenly_a reward_n of_o glory_n be_v both_o increase_v and_o confirm_v and_o seal_v unto_o us._n and_o to_o this_o precept_n of_o our_o saviour_n â—_o well_o agree_v that_o of_o the_o apostle_n jam._n 1.2_o my_o brethren_n count_v it_o all_o joy_n when_o you_o fall_v into_o diverse_a affliction_n meaning_n as_o i_o take_v it_o of_o such_o as_o be_v inflict_v by_o the_o world_n which_o then_o be_v most_o usual_a we_o must_v then_o rejoice_v and_o that_o withal_o joy_n in_o the_o great_a measure_n we_o be_v able_a because_o thereby_o we_o attain_v to_o be_v patient_a and_o so_o shall_v be_v perfect_a and_o complete_a man_n in_o christ_n a_o example_n of_o this_o precept_n we_o have_v both_o in_o the_o example_n of_o all_o the_o apostle_n act._n 5._o in_o the_o end_n who_o be_v beat_v for_o profess_v christ_n 5.41_o go_v away_o rejoice_v from_o the_o counsel_n take_v it_o as_o a_o honour_n do_v to_o they_o and_o so_o of_o this_o our_o apostle_n 2._o 12.10_o cor._n 12.10_o i_o take_v pleasure_n say_v he_o in_o infirmity_n in_o reproach_n in_o necessity_n in_o persecution_n for_o christ_n sake_n for_o when_o i_o be_o weak_a then_o be_o i_o strong_a he_o take_v pleasure_n in_o these_o because_o he_o find_v that_o even_o by_o they_o god_n minister_v great_a strength_n and_o comfort_n to_o he_o object_n 2_o but_o here_o again_o i_o know_v that_o many_o good_a distress_a soul_n will_v be_v ready_a to_o soul_n to_o take_v they_o how_o can_v they_o be_v merry_a that_o be_v night_n and_o day_n besiege_v thus_o dangerous_o especial_o of_o legion_n of_o devil_n of_o spiritual_a wickedness_n that_o be_v diligent_a and_o watchful_a night_n and_o day_n to_o surprise_v and_o take_v their_o soul_n alas_o these_o be_v many_o and_o strong_a enemy_n and_o we_o be_v weak_a and_o in_o continual_a combat_n with_o they_o answ_n i_o answer_v true_a it_o be_v these_o enemy_n be_v many_o and_o of_o great_a power_n diligence_n and_o subtlety_n join_v with_o deadly_a hate_n and_o malice_n against_o us._n but_o consider_v again_o be_v they_o never_o so_o strong_a and_o powerful_a yet_o if_o we_o do_v but_o resist_v and_o stand_v out_o against_o they_o they_o will_v fly_v from_o us._n resist_v the_o devil_n say_v the_o apostle_n james._n 4.7_o 4.7_o and_o he_o will_v fly_v from_o you_o resist_v he_o though_o he_o be_v never_o so_o strong_a resist_v he_o though_o he_o have_v his_o legion_n of_o devil_n with_o he_o against_o thou_o and_o he_o shall_v fly_v from_o thou_o mark_v it_o he_o shall_v fly_v and_o that_o from_o thou_o note_n thou_o shall_v put_v he_o to_o flight_n be_v thou_o the_o weak_a christian_a in_o the_o world_n 6.16_o if_o thou_o will_v but_o resist_v he_o with_o the_o shield_n of_o faith_n the_o sword_n of_o the_o spirit_n etc._n etc._n here_o therefore_o we_o have_v great_a cause_n of_o joy_n and_o triumph_n then_o of_o sorrow_n for_o what_o cause_n have_v he_o but_o to_o rejoice_v that_o may_v every_o day_n so_o easy_o triumph_v over_o so_o great_a and_o so_o many_o enemy_n that_o be_v a_o poor_a weak_a man_n may_v put_v to_o flight_n whole_a army_n and_o legion_n of_o devil_n object_n 3_o but_o some_o man_n may_v except_v thus_o indeed_o i_o have_v a_o great_a promise_n from_o god_n i_o shall_v do_v this_o if_o i_o resist_v but_o alas_o many_o time_n through_o my_o weakness_n i_o be_o ready_a to_o slumber_v and_o to_o sleep_v and_o can_v be_v ever_o who_o shall_v deliver_v i_o from_o this_o body_n of_o sin_n end_n but_o yet_o we_o have_v also_o by_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n sufficient_a wherewithal_o to_o raise_v we_o up_o in_o this_o sorrow_n psalm_n for_o we_o have_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n within_o we_o to_o help_v our_o infirmity_n we_o have_v the_o angel_n of_o god_n night_n and_o day_n to_o pitch_v their_o tent_n about_o we_o to_o aid_v we_o against_o the_o evil_a angel_n we_o have_v god_n himself_o psalm_n who_o neither_o slumber_v nor_o sleep_v that_o watch_v and_o care_v for_o us._n be_v we_o never_o so_o weak_a and_o the_o devil_n never_o so_o strong_a god_n who_o be_v with_o we_o will_v uphold_v we_o and_o no_o devil_n shall_v pluck_v we_o from_o he_o or_o out_o of_o his_o hand_n if_o i_o shall_v further_o enter_v to_o lay_v down_o all_o the_o cause_n that_o may_v and_o aught_o to_o move_v the_o faithful_a unto_o joy_n i_o shall_v not_o easy_o find_v a_o end_n of_o so_o large_a and_o long_o a_o treatise_n joy_n i_o will_v therefore_o in_o a_o word_n only_o entreat_v every_o man_n who_o be_v desirous_a to_o learn_v what_o cause_n he_o have_v to_o rejoice_v be_v a_o righteous_a
to_o tear_v the_o wound_n that_o we_o ought_v to_o heal_v and_o to_o bind_v up_o but_o this_o do_v the_o wicked_a when_o they_o seek_v to_o vex_v and_o grieve_v the_o faithful_a that_o be_v already_o wound_v and_o cast_v down_o with_o sorrow_n in_o their_o soul_n yea_o and_o for_o that_o they_o carry_v corruption_n still_o about_o they_o i_o say_v not_o he_o be_v the_o happy_a that_o rejoice_v most_o for_o that_o no_o doubt_n many_o time_n he_o may_v do_v which_o be_v but_o in_o a_o very_a woeful_a case_n as_o our_o saviour_n christ_n say_v woe_n be_v to_o you_o that_o laugh_v but_o he_o i_o say_v be_v the_o happy_a man_n that_o have_v the_o great_a cause_n of_o joy_n joy_n for_o this_o be_v the_o argument_n of_o all_o those_o blessedness_n which_o our_o saviour_n christ_n pronounce_v matth._n 5._o the_o poor_a in_o spirit_n be_v pronounce_v bless_v because_o they_o have_v cause_n to_o rejoice_v so_o they_o that_o mourn_v they_o that_o be_v meek_a etc._n etc._n be_v bless_v because_o these_o though_o they_o do_v not_o rejoice_v yet_o they_o have_v every_o one_o of_o they_o just_a cause_n to_o rejoice_v but_o to_o proceed_v have_v the_o faithful_a and_o righteous_a alone_a just_a cause_n of_o joy_n then_o if_o thou_o desire_v sound_o to_o rejoice_v practise_v careful_o and_o constant_o a_o just_a and_o righteous_a life_n for_o without_o this_o faith_n and_o uprightness_n it_o be_v impossible_a though_o thou_o have_v make_v a_o beginning_n therein_o already_o ever_o to_o find_v any_o state_n that_o will_v give_v thou_o cause_n all_o thing_n well_o weigh_v to_o take_v any_o joy_n in_o it_o it_o be_v not_o the_o throne_n of_o a_o prince_n nor_o the_o treasure_n of_o the_o earth_n nor_o the_o pleasure_n of_o the_o world_n that_o can_v afford_v it_o use_v 4_o last_o have_v the_o righteous_a man_n cause_n to_o rejoice_v then_o ought_v he_o to_o stir_v up_o himself_o unto_o the_o duty_n follow_v namely_o that_o he_o do_v rejoice_v indeed_o this_o neither_o be_v we_o to_o ask_v joy_n simple_o for_o itself_o but_o that_o rejoice_v in_o god_n and_o in_o his_o goodness_n we_o may_v have_v cause_n and_o be_v the_o fit_a to_o bless_v god_n for_o good_a motion_n into_o thy_o heart_n be_v careful_a by_o all_o mean_v possible_a to_o entertain_v they_o to_o cherish_v and_o to_o make_v much_o of_o they_o so_o shall_v thou_o make_v glad_a the_o good_a spirit_n of_o god_n and_o he_o shall_v give_v peace_n and_o joy_n to_o thy_o soul_n but_o be_v this_o common_o practise_v nothing_o less_o for_o as_o it_o be_v say_v of_o the_o israelite_n forty_o year_n long_o they_o grieve_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n so_o may_v it_o be_v say_v of_o the_o most_o among_o we_o our_o whole_a life_n have_v be_v a_o continual_a grieve_v and_o provoke_v the_o good_a spirit_n of_o god_n for_o which_o of_o we_o can_v excuse_v ourselves_o but_o that_o we_o have_v have_v diverse_a good_a motion_n sometime_o from_o other_o sometime_o from_o ourselves_o and_o yet_o we_o have_v resist_v they_o sometime_o we_o have_v be_v move_v to_o hear_v the_o word_n of_o god_n yet_o either_o for_o some_o vain_a pleasure_n or_o small_a profit_n we_o have_v neglect_v it_o many_o time_n we_o have_v have_v a_o motion_n to_o leave_v swear_v curse_a lie_a and_o some_o especial_a sin_n we_o have_v be_v give_v unto_o yet_o have_v we_o not_o cherish_v these_o motion_n nay_o we_o have_v banish_v they_o away_o and_o shut_v as_o it_o be_v the_o door_n of_o our_o heart_n against_o they_o no_o marvel_n therefore_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n afford_v unto_o we_o so_o scanty_a measure_n of_o heavenly_a joy_n when_o we_o thus_o daily_o and_o continual_o grieve_v he_o when_o as_o fast_o as_o he_o kindle_v any_o grace_n or_o good_a thing_n in_o we_o we_o be_v ready_a to_o quench_v it_o and_o as_o it_o be_v to_o cast_v water_n upon_o it_o note_n if_o we_o will_v have_v joy_n we_o must_v make_v much_o of_o the_o spirit_n of_o joy_n that_o we_o shall_v do_v if_o we_o never_o cross_v any_o good_a motion_n but_o be_v ready_a with_o all_o cheerfulness_n and_o alacrity_n to_o foster_v and_o to_o cherish_v it_o in_o we_o so_o that_o of_o a_o good_a motion_n it_o may_v grow_v to_o be_v a_o settle_a and_o a_o constant_a affection_n in_o we_o otherwise_o look_v for_o no_o joy_n from_o that_o spirit_n who_o thou_o care_v not_o to_o grieve_v rather_o fear_v as_o just_o thou_o may_v that_o heavy_a sorrow_n or_o at_o least_o a_o deadly_a and_o senseless_a numbness_n will_v befall_v thou_o for_o experience_n have_v show_v most_o fearful_a example_n not_o only_o of_o they_o that_o have_v lose_v their_o joy_n for_o a_o while_n but_o of_o they_o that_o have_v die_v in_o most_o lamentable_a despair_n by_o resist_v these_o good_a motion_n and_o other_o that_o for_o all_o the_o time_n of_o their_o life_n with_o all_o the_o mean_n they_o can_v use_v be_v never_o able_a to_o recover_v the_o feel_n of_o their_o joy_n again_o lose_v by_o the_o resist_a sometime_o of_o one_o good_a motion_n quench_v not_o therefore_o the_o spirit_n that_o be_v the_o good_a motion_n of_o god_n spirit_n motion_n but_o yet_o if_o thou_o will_v keep_v thy_o joy_n remember_v and_o be_v careful_a to_o quench_v another_o spirit_n that_o be_v all_o the_o motion_n and_o suggestion_n that_o he_o seek_v to_o put_v into_o thy_o mind_n for_o as_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n be_v the_o spirit_n of_o joy_n and_o be_v cheer_v by_o thou_o will_v cheer_v thy_o heart_n in_o god_n so_o satan_n be_v a_o spirit_n of_o heaviness_n and_o a_o spirit_n of_o despair_n entertain_v he_o and_o follow_v his_o motion_n and_o thou_o fall_v into_o the_o way_n of_o despair_n and_o heaviness_n resist_v he_o and_o his_o suggestion_n and_o thou_o shall_v both_o cheer_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n and_o free_v thyself_o from_o all_o that_o sorrow_n and_o heaviness_n that_o the_o devil_n seek_v to_o bring_v into_o thy_o soul_n predominant_a again_o that_o thou_o may_v keep_v thy_o joy_n in_o god_n remember_v it_o be_v not_o sufficient_a for_o thou_o to_o keep_v some_o kind_n of_o joy_n and_o delight_n in_o good_a thing_n but_o thy_o joy_n in_o these_o thing_n must_v be_v a_o predominant_a note_v &_o a_o everlasting_a joy_n for_o if_o thou_o suffer_v the_o delight_n of_o any_o earthly_a matter_n to_o possess_v &_o to_o occupy_v the_o chief_a place_n in_o thy_o heart_n thy_o true_a joy_n be_v go_v herod_n he_o have_v some_o kind_n of_o joy_n in_o hear_v john_n baptist_n preach_v whereupon_o also_o he_o do_v many_o good_a thing_n but_o because_o his_o joy_n be_v not_o predominant_a
