because_o natural_a man_n can_v raise_v their_o mind_n unto_o the_o apprehension_n of_o spiritual_a truth_n which_o beget_v in_o the_o soul_n a_o new_a life_n and_o far_o less_o can_v they_o act_v any_o thing_n thereby_o without_o special_a grace_n yet_o if_o the_o intellectual_n of_o a_o man_n true_o rational_a in_o nature_n which_o be_v not_o altogether_o impossible_a be_v raise_v so_o far_o by_o the_o right_a use_n of_o common_a illumination_n as_o to_o perceive_v the_o proportion_n which_o be_v between_o such_o performance_n as_o these_o be_v and_o the_o principle_n from_o whence_o they_o flow_v he_o will_v find_v no_o just_a cause_n to_o contradict_v any_o thing_n therein_o although_o his_o heart_n will_v not_o be_v able_a thereupon_o to_o close_v with_o the_o duty_n themselves_o for_o a_o true_a christian_a be_v a_o spiritual_a man_n be_v not_o enable_v to_o close_v hearty_o with_o these_o duty_n either_o because_o he_o be_v convict_v of_o the_o rationalitie_n and_o give_v up_o to_o walk_v thus_o with_o god_n in_o christ_n by_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n for_o through_o the_o law_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o life_n and_o love_n which_o be_v in_o christ_n jesus_n whereby_o he_o be_v free_v from_o the_o law_n of_o sin_n and_o of_o death_n he_o be_v make_v conformable_a unto_o the_o image_n of_o the_o son_n of_o god_n and_o the_o righteousness_n of_o do_v all_o our_o matter_n with_o charity_n 1_o cor._n 16._o 14._o for_o we_o be_v oblige_v by_o the_o love_n of_o god_n to_o we_o as_o his_o dear_a child_n to_o be_v follower_n of_o god_n and_o to_o walk_v in_o love_n as_o christ_n also_o have_v love_v we_o ephes_n 5._o 1_o 2._o and_o if_o we_o walk_v not_o thus_o it_o be_v evident_a that_o we_o be_v none_o of_o his_o child_n but_o have_v renounce_v his_o love_n and_o be_v destitute_a of_o the_o life_n of_o god_n in_o all_o our_o undertake_n for_o he_o that_o love_v not_o know_v not_o god_n for_o god_n be_v love_n 1_o joh._n 4._o 8._o of_o a_o perfect_a way_n be_v compare_v with_o the_o nature_n &_o motion_n of_o a_o magistrate_n place_n for_o the_o place_n of_o a_o magistrate_n be_v whole_o relative_a and_o towards_o other_o except_o therefore_o his_o way_n be_v perfect_a against_o evil_n and_o for_o good_a in_o teference_n to_o other_o it_o do_v not_o answer_v his_o place_n and_o except_o it_o be_v so_o as_o well_o in_o private_a as_o in_o public_a it_o be_v not_o perfect_a for_o although_o a_o good_a man_n may_v be_v a_o ill_a magistrate_n for_o want_n of_o rule_v part_n yet_o no_o man_n that_o be_v ill_o can_v be_v a_o good_a magistrate_n though_o his_o part_n be_v never_o so_o eminent_a because_o a_o evil_a man_n as_o he_o make_v no_o conscience_n of_o sin_n in_o private_a so_o he_o will_v never_o be_v they_o incorrigible_a by_o cut_v off_o the_o incorrigible_a 8._o that_o by_o oppose_a vice_n in_o other_o private_o and_o public_o magistrate_n do_v not_o enough_o to_o remove_v the_o wicked_a from_o place_n of_o trust_n and_o to_o show_v their_o dislike_n of_o man_n except_o also_o they_o use_v mean_n to_o cut_v they_o off_o from_o the_o society_n over_o which_o they_o be_v set_v and_o especial_o if_o they_o be_v find_v incorrigible_a this_o be_v plain_o david_n resolution_n in_o his_o perfect_a way_n of_o walk_v as_o appear_v by_o ver_fw-la 5._o 7._o &_o 8._o sort_n especial_o of_o four_o sort_n 9_o that_o magistrate_n walk_v in_o their_o place_n in_o a_o perfect_a way_n shall_v take_v notice_n as_o well_o of_o those_o that_o plot_n perverse_a design_n as_o of_o those_o that_o put_v make_v it_o a_o unalterable_a maxim_n of_o state_n to_o reject_v all_o suitor_n for_o place_n and_o to_o admit_v of_o none_o but_o who_o they_o themselves_o shall_v choose_v and_o call_v upon_o the_o discovery_n of_o their_o ability_n and_o of_o these_o character_n find_v in_o they_o namely_o that_o they_o be_v faithful_a in_o the_o land_n and_o perfect_a in_o their_o way_n he_o be_v faithful_a in_o the_o land_n who_o be_v true_a to_o the_o public_a good_a thereof_o who_o have_v not_o seek_v his_o own_o private_a advantage_n before_o the_o interest_n of_o the_o commonwealth_n such_o a_o one_o may_v be_v trust_v with_o a_o public_a place_n that_o he_o will_v not_o abuse_v it_o for_o his_o own_o end_n and_o he_o be_v perfect_a in_o his_o way_n who_o course_n of_o life_n be_v sincere_a and_o conscionable_a and_o who_o be_v careful_a to_o maintain_v his_o integrity_n without_o offence_n towards_o all_o if_o none_o but_o such_o be_v seek_v out_o for_o public_a place_n the_o affair_n of_o state_n and_o commonwealth_n will_v indeed_o be_v successful_a but_o as_o long_o as_o the_o maxim_n and_o interest_n of_o faction_n and_o party_n which_o all_o along_o destroy_v humane_a society_n be_v follow_v and_o private_a aim_n bear_v rule_v over_o the_o spirit_n of_o those_o that_o rule_n in_o a_o state_n these_o character_n of_o man_n fit_a for_o place_n will_v never_o be_v regard_v nor_o the_o course_n to_o choose_v and_o call_v thereunto_o take_v up_o by_o any_o 12._o that_o the_o aim_n of_o a_o godly_a and_o wise_a magistrate_n be_v not_o to_o serve_v himself_o in_o his_o place_n but_o other_o nor_o his_o ultimate_a end_n to_o serve_v other_o so_o much_o in_o their_o temporal_a convenience_n as_o to_o protect_v the_o city_n of_o god_n and_o free_v it_o from_o sin_n but_o rather_o our_o trial_n and_o through_o the_o lot_n of_o our_o affliction_n the_o way_n to_o a_o blessing_n if_o we_o behave_v ourselves_o as_o christian_n ought_v to_o do_v therein_o for_o change_n take_v we_o not_o off_o from_o the_o way_n of_o christianity_n which_o be_v unchangeable_a we_o have_v just_a cause_n to_o believe_v that_o by_o the_o increase_n of_o virtue_n and_o grace_n that_o can_v obstruct_v the_o enjoyment_n of_o this_o consolation_n but_o the_o discomposure_n of_o our_o spirit_n and_o the_o disorderlinesse_n of_o our_o behaviour_n in_o the_o work_n of_o our_o employment_n and_o lest_o by_o these_o mean_v we_o may_v be_v deprive_v of_o our_o comfort_n and_o lose_v the_o fruit_n of_o our_o labour_n which_o be_v undertake_v for_o the_o reparation_n of_o that_o which_o be_v lay_v waste_n among_o we_o let_v we_o point_v at_o the_o chief_a distemper_n and_o disorder_n which_o obstruct_v our_o work_n that_o they_o may_v be_v remove_v and_o the_o course_n suitable_a to_o the_o rule_n of_o our_o holy_a profession_n heretofore_o set_v down_o serious_o take_v up_o and_o sincere_o follow_v i_o have_v already_o give_v you_o my_o sense_n of_o several_a distemper_n and_o disorderly_a carriage_n of_o some_o particular_a man_n in_o their_o distinct_a way_n which_o have_v a_o special_a influence_n upon_o our_o spiritual_a affair_n to_o make_v we_o as_o the_o confuse_a bvilder_n of_o babylon_n the_o author_n of_o our_o own_o dissipation_n and_o ruin_n i_o shall_v now_o mention_v a_o few_o disorderly_a course_n which_o be_v incident_a unto_o all_o man_n more_o or_o less_o and_o seem_v to_o discompose_v the_o healthful_a constitution_n of_o our_o whole_a society_n in_o the_o management_n of_o all_o outward_a affair_n and_o here_o although_o i_o be_o not_o ignorant_a that_o the_o distemper_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o the_o disorder_n of_o the_o behaviour_n be_v thing_n very_o far_o distant_a in_o their_o nature_n and_o distinct_a in_o their_o property_n yet_o because_o in_o matter_n of_o outward_a concernment_n they_o be_v seldom_o separate_a and_o go_v hand_n in_o hand_n they_o beget_v interchangeable_o and_o be_v beget_v by_o each_o other_o therefore_o and_o for_o brevity_n sake_n i_o shall_v not_o heed_v their_o distinction_n at_o this_o time_n but_o leave_v it_o to_o every_o one_o thought_n in_o that_o which_o i_o shall_v offer_v here_o then_o let_v i_o speak_v of_o the_o distemper_n and_o disorderlinesse_n proceed_v from_o these_o follow_a root_n of_o bitterness_n viz_o from_o envy_n from_o jealousy_n and_o fear_n from_o tale_n bear_v and_o private_a censure_v &_o from_o revenge_n which_o i_o conceive_v to_o be_v the_o chief_a cause_n of_o our_o present_a disease_n and_o of_o all_o these_o this_o be_v to_o be_v say_v in_o the_o general_a that_o as_o no_o man_n can_v exempt_v himself_o from_o the_o danger_n of_o these_o sinful_a motion_n so_o those_o that_o be_v most_o remarkable_o engage_v either_o by_o their_o place_n or_o proceed_n in_o the_o management_n of_o public_a affair_n be_v most_o liable_a to_o the_o temptation_n thereof_o which_o be_v so_o much_o the_o more_o hurtful_a to_o the_o society_n of_o mankind_n by_o how_o much_o the_o person_n upon_o who_o they_o seize_v be_v find_v more_o eminent_a in_o part_n or_o place_n and_o the_o affair_n upon_o which_o they_o reflect_v be_v more_o important_a and_o by_o how_o much_o the_o complication_n of_o these_o distemper_n in_o those_o that_o be_v act_v by_o they_o be_v more_o powerful_a less_o corrigible_a and_o less_o discernible_a by_o the_o chief_a cause_n of_o our_o disease_n but_o let_v we_o come_v to_o the_o particular_n of_o these_o evil_n to_o see_v the_o symptom_n of_o our_o public_a malady_n therein_o and_o find_v the_o cure_n thereof_o whereof_o envy_n be_v the_o first_o first_o concern_v envy_n the_o spirit_n of_o god_n by_o the_o apostle_n james_n discover_v the_o nature_n of_o it_o unto_o we_o in_o his_o 4._o chapter_n where_o he_o show_v that_o all_o our_o war_n and_o fight_n come_v from_o our_o inbred_a lust_n chap._n 4._o v._n 1._o that_o these_o beget_v a_o extreme_a disorder_n in_o question_n thus_o do_v the_o spirit_n which_o dwell_v in_o we_o lust_n to_o envy_v as_o if_o he_o have_v say_v it_o be_v evident_a that_o your_o friendship_n with_o the_o world_n be_v enmity_n with_o our_o aim_n be_v never_o so_o good_a and_o commendable_a yet_o not_o to_o proceed_v any_o further_a than_o with_o modesty_n we_o can_v measure_v out_o the_o undertake_n as_o proportionable_a unto_o our_o place_n and_o ability_n that_o we_o may_v keep_v within_o compass_n and_o not_o suffer_v our_o attempt_n to_o go_v beyond_o our_o line_n these_o be_v summary_o the_o head_n of_o matter_n contain_v in_o the_o second_o duty_n which_o be_v neglect_v make_v man_n guilty_a of_o manifold_a private_a and_o public_a miscarriage_n &_o offence_n and_o will_v to_o god_n the_o brethren_n who_o have_v teach_v other_o to_o demur_v and_o make_v a_o scruple_n of_o conscience_n about_o concur_v with_o the_o present_a power_n in_o lawful_a thing_n tend_v to_o the_o public_a good_a have_v serious_o before_o they_o take_v that_o work_n in_o hand_n reflect_v upon_o these_o rule_n to_o make_v straight_o path_n unto_o their_o foot_n thereby_o for_o that_o hitherto_o they_o have_v not_o do_v this_o there_o be_v just_a cause_n to_o complain_v but_o if_o they_o yet_o will_v begin_v before_o it_o be_v too_o late_a to_o reflect_v thus_o upon_o their_o way_n and_o follow_v this_o council_n perhaps_o our_o breach_n may_v be_v heal_v it_o be_v evident_a that_o we_o be_v out_o of_o the_o way_n of_o peace_n and_o that_o we_o can_v come_v into_o it_o again_o except_o we_o apply_v ourselves_o to_o the_o way_n of_o righteousness_n i_o suppose_v it_o be_v undeniable_a if_o we_o seek_v this_o way_n by_o these_o rule_n undoubted_o we_o shall_v find_v it_o the_o lord_n grant_v we_o eye_n both_o to_o see_v it_o and_o also_o to_o observe_v our_o own_o straying_n from_o it_o and_o as_o we_o have_v discover_v the_o way_n so_o it_o will_v be_v no_o difficult_a matter_n if_o it_o and_o swiftness_n whence_o also_o this_o inconvenience_n do_v follow_v the_o lameness_n of_o a_o member_n that_o it_o may_v soon_o be_v turn_v out_o of_o the_o way_n either_o by_o its_o own_o unequal_a motion_n if_o the_o way_n wherein_o it_o walk_v be_v rugged_a and_o narrow_a or_o by_o the_o uncharitableness_n of_o other_o who_o be_v strong_a may_v justle_v it_o out_o of_o the_o way_n although_o it_o be_v neither_o rugged_a nor_o narrow_a now_o that_o there_o be_v among_o we_o many_o lameness_n and_o that_o the_o lame_a be_v turn_v out_o of_o the_o way_n as_o well_o by_o their_o own_o weak_a innocent_a and_o irregular_a motion_n as_o by_o the_o evil_a will_n of_o other_o who_o justle_n with_o they_o can_v be_v deny_v therefore_o this_o duty_n of_o heal_a and_o of_o keep_v the_o lame_a in_o the_o way_n which_o be_v the_o effect_n of_o love_n and_o righteousness_n must_v be_v apply_v unto_o this_o symptom_n of_o our_o disease_n here_o the_o work_n of_o love_n as_o every_o where_o else_o must_v have_v the_o first_o place_n and_o the_o influence_n which_o it_o have_v towards_o the_o weak_a be_v by_o way_n of_o compassion_n whereof_o the_o effect_n be_v a_o desire_n and_o endeavour_v to_o ease_v they_o of_o the_o evil_a wherewith_o they_o be_v afflict_v the_o work_n of_o righteousness_n have_v the_o second_o place_n whereof_o the_o influence_n be_v by_o way_n of_o innocency_n and_o the_o effect_n be_v to_o be_v no_o way_n accessary_a to_o the_o cause_n of_o beget_v or_o continue_v any_o lameness_n among_o we_o or_o of_o disturb_v any_o good_a design_n by_o turn_v the_o lame_a out_o of_o the_o way_n and_o thus_o by_o this_o three_o rule_n when_o we_o have_v make_v our_o own_o work_n straight_o for_o ourselves_o our_o step_n towards_o other_o be_v to_o be_v regulate_v that_o we_o may_v also_o walk_v straight_o therein_o towards_o all_o man_n be_v useful_a towards_o they_o and_o harmless_a where_o the_o usefullnesse_n of_o our_o wash_n be_v to_o be_v make_v straight_o by_o the_o law_n of_o love_n which_o do_v cover_v and_o heal_v that_o which_o be_v amiss_o and_o the_o harmlesnes_n thereof_o be_v to_o be_v make_v straight_o by_o the_o law_n of_o indemnity_n that_o if_o we_o can_v make_v their_o condition_n better_o to_o be_v sure_a not_o to_o wrong_v they_o by_o make_v it_o worse_o if_o the_o brethren_n who_o in_o opposition_n to_o the_o present_a power_n refuse_v to_o act_v with_o other_o in_o good_a and_o lawful_a thing_n that_o which_o in_o itself_o be_v acceptable_a to_o god_n and_o approve_a of_o man_n usurpation_n and_o abuse_n of_o power_n and_o trust_v in_o those_o that_o be_v servant_n to_o make_v themselves_o master_n yea_o or_o no_o or_o what_o title_n soever_o else_o may_v be_v give_v to_o their_o roll_a state_n and_o power_n it_o make_v no_o matter_n to_o i_o in_o respect_n of_o christianity_n and_o those_o forenamed_a duty_n because_o in_o christianity_n those_o be_v duty_n which_o i_o must_v intend_v without_o respect_n of_o person_n at_o all_o time_n and_o towards_o all_o man_n except_o i_o can_v true_o judge_v that_o they_o have_v sin_v the_o sin_n unto_o death_n which_o i_o hope_v none_o will_v judge_v of_o these_o for_o suppose_v as_o to_o man_n that_o their_o stand_v have_v no_o place_n and_o shall_v be_v think_v not_o only_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o nationall_n but_o
