the_o love_n of_o truth_n and_o goodness_n and_o the_o hatred_n of_o falsehood_n and_o wickedness_n yet_o their_o heart_n be_v not_o upright_o three_o other_o do_v think_v that_o if_o they_o carry_v the_o truth_n and_o virtue_n hide_v in_o their_o heart_n albeit_o in_o word_n and_o deed_n they_o carry_v themselves_o otherwise_o that_o they_o can_v be_v accuse_v of_o the_o un-uprightnesse_n and_o pravity_n of_o their_o heart_n but_o these_o have_v not_o a_o right_a hart_n four_o there_o be_v some_o that_o albeit_o they_o understand_v not_o sound_o and_o full_o the_o thing_n hear_v yet_o be_v angry_a with_o the_o true_a and_o good_a thing_n and_o be_v delight_v with_o the_o false_a and_o wicked_a thing_n nor_o yet_o have_v these_o man_n any_o right_a affection_n five_o some_o on_o the_o other_o side_n albeit_o they_o do_v sound_o know_v the_o thing_n they_o hear_v insomuch_o that_o they_o can_v say_v nothing_o against_o it_o yet_o have_v thing_n false_a and_o evil_o take_v such_o deep_a root_n in_o they_o and_o so_o prevail_v by_o the_o long_a custom_n they_o have_v have_v with_o they_o that_o they_o have_v rather_o quite_o forsake_v that_o which_o be_v true_a and_o good_a then_o cast_v away_o their_o inveterate_a and_o ancient_a error_n and_o manner_n and_o who_o can_v say_v that_o these_o man_n have_v a_o right_a affection_n six_o but_o other_o be_v so_o take_v up_o with_o the_o care_n of_o the_o belly_n and_o worldly_a thing_n and_o be_v so_o much_o estrange_v from_o suffer_a persecution_n for_o the_o profession_n of_o the_o truth_n and_o virtue_n that_o they_o will_v in_o no_o wise_n entertain_v either_o virtue_n or_o truth_n and_o these_o man_n affection_n be_v much_o less_o right_a than_o the_o rest_n and_o therefore_o a_o right_a affection_n and_o good_a heart_n towards_o the_o thing_n which_o be_v hear_v be_v a_o most_o necessary_a duty_n of_o hear_v 2_o there_o be_v some_o impediment_n and_o hindrance_n of_o this_o right_a affection_n unto_o thing_n and_o of_o evil_a thing_n as_o of_o calumny_n condemnation_n and_o persecution_n and_o so_o to_o be_v withdraw_v from_o a_o right_a affection_n towards_o truth_n and_o virtue_n and_o incline_v to_o a_o affection_n towards_o lie_n and_o vice_n or_o to_o hypocritical_a dissimulation_n then_o be_v the_o affection_n of_o the_o heart_n much_o blur_v and_o dis-ordered_n and_o so_o be_v the_o thing_n they_o hear_v not_o right_o affect_v 3_o the_o advancement_n and_o help_n of_o this_o duty_n be_v no_o other_o but_o such_o as_o be_v prescribe_v in_o the_o help_n of_o the_o two_o former_a duty_n this_o respect_n that_o the_o hearer_n heart_n may_v be_v well_o affect_v god_n be_v to_o be_v call_v upon_o with_o prayer_n and_o sigh_n in_o the_o beginning_n midst_n and_o end_n of_o sermon_n to_o give_v they_o this_o right_a affection_n of_o heart_n towards_o the_o love_n of_o the_o know_a truth_n and_o virtue_n and_o the_o hatred_n of_o know_a falsehood_n and_o vice_n 4_o the_o last_o duty_n require_v in_o a_o hearer_n that_o he_o may_v come_v to_o the_o full_a scope_n and_o drift_n of_o hear_v sermon_n which_o be_v the_o glory_n of_o god_n good_a of_o his_o church_n and_o his_o own_o eternal_a salvation_n be_v a_o resolve_a purpose_n of_o the_o practice_n of_o such_o thing_n as_o he_o have_v hear_v understand_v and_o be_v affect_v withal_o and_o that_o in_o the_o course_n of_o his_o whole_a life_n and_o sure_o it_o be_v a_o most_o weighty_a exhortation_n which_o the_o holy_a spirit_n use_v to_o stir_v up_o man_n to_o the_o hear_n of_o the_o word_n 1.22.23.24.25.26_o jam._n 1.22.23.24.25.26_o be_v you_o doer_n of_o the_o word_n and_o not_o hearer_n only_o deceive_v your_o own_o self_n etc._n etc._n where_o he_o admonish_v that_o it_o be_v not_o sufficient_a to_o hear_v and_o understand_v sermon_n and_o to_o be_v affect_v towards_o they_o with_o a_o changeable_a and_o temporary_a affection_n except_o there_o be_v add_v withal_o a_o firm_a and_o fast_o purpose_n of_o the_o practice_n of_o they_o in_o our_o whole_a life_n therefore_o as_o we_o have_v in_o the_o former_a duty_n so_o here_o we_o will_v brief_o show_v first_o the_o nature_n of_o this_o settle_a purpose_n of_o practice_n second_o the_o impediment_n of_o it_o three_o the_o advancement_n and_o help_n of_o it_o 1_o this_o serious_a purpose_n of_o the_o practice_n of_o good_a thing_n hear_v know_v and_o approve_a be_v a_o grace_n give_v whereby_o the_o hearer_n do_v not_o only_o resolve_v with_o a_o faithful_a heart_n that_o he_o will_v apply_v unto_o himself_o and_o the_o use_n and_o edification_n of_o other_o in_o every_o sermon_n and_o in_o the_o whole_a course_n of_o his_o life_n every_o profitable_a doctrine_n hear_v know_v and_o approve_a in_o every_o state_n as_o well_o prosperity_n as_o adversity_n before_o in_o and_o after_o all_o his_o action_n but_o chief_o in_o perplex_a and_o intricate_a question_n and_o objection_n most_o of_o all_o in_o the_o stratagem_n and_o temptation_n of_o satan_n so_o that_o it_o appear_v this_o part_n of_o the_o hearer_n duty_n belong_v to_o the_o information_n of_o life_n and_o practice_n and_o have_v his_o original_n from_o the_o other_o three_o duty_n and_o not_o without_o cause_n be_v it_o call_v a_o serious_a and_o resolute_a purpose_n of_o practice_n see_v so_o many_o vice_n do_v main_o oppose_v it_o as_o first_o our_o inbred_a hypocrisy_n second_o transitory_a and_o temporary_a application_n in_o time_n of_o prosperity_n three_o vain_a boast_n of_o our_o christian_a profession_n without_o amendment_n of_o life_n four_o too_o much_o love_n of_o our_o corrupt_a nature_n fift_o rash_a break_n into_o the_o handle_n of_o business_n sixthly_a carnal_a security_n and_o such_o other_o evil_n as_o do_v control_v our_o purpose_n of_o holiness_n whereof_o there_o will_v follow_v a_o plentiful_a remembrance_n hereafter_o when_o we_o shall_v discourse_v of_o the_o hindrance_n of_o application_n 2._o &_o 3_o the_o impediment_n and_o advancement_n of_o the_o holy_a practice_n of_o thing_n hear_v understand_v and_o approve_v be_v the_o same_o which_o hinder_v or_o advance_v the_o attentive_a hear_n sound_v know_v and_o affectionate_a approve_v of_o sermon_n and_o may_v fit_o be_v refer_v to_o either_o but_o because_o this_o resolute_a purpose_n of_o practice_n and_o care_n of_o application_n in_o the_o whole_a life_n of_o man_n as_o it_o be_v of_o all_o other_o the_o difficult_a part_n of_o the_o hearer_n duty_n so_o it_o be_v the_o chief_a and_o most_o proper_a unto_o a_o christian_a therefore_o the_o great_a care_n be_v to_o be_v have_v about_o they_o both_o for_o which_o cause_n it_o will_v be_v very_o fit_v to_o set_v the_o same_o before_o our_o eye_n more_o particular_o that_o every_o hearer_n may_v know_v what_o be_v the_o necessity_n of_o this_o application_n and_o wherein_o it_o consist_v it_o be_v a_o thing_n most_o undoubted_a that_o the_o use_n and_o application_n of_o the_o doctrine_n we_o here_o deliver_v be_v of_o singular_a benefit_n to_o the_o hearer_n for_o without_o due_a use_n and_o application_n the_o best_a sermon_n that_o ever_o be_v be_v but_o the_o value_n of_o it_o and_o the_o use_n as_o christ_n his_o benefit_n and_o faith_n by_o which_o they_o be_v apply_v now_o as_o there_o be_v no_o benefit_n come_v by_o the_o tree_n without_o fruit_n no_o benefit_n of_o fruit_n if_o not_o gather_v as_o no_o good_a come_v by_o physic_n if_o it_o have_v no_o power_n nor_o virtue_n nor_o help_n come_v by_o the_o virtue_n of_o a_o medicine_n if_o not_o apply_v as_o there_o be_v no_o good_a come_v by_o money_n if_o we_o know_v not_o the_o value_n of_o it_o nor_o do_v the_o value_n of_o it_o avail_v we_o if_o we_o use_v it_o not_o as_o christ_n profit_n we_o not_o without_o his_o benefit_n nor_o his_o benefit_n without_o faith_n to_o apply_v they_o so_o doctrine_n profit_n nothing_o except_o we_o know_v the_o use_n of_o it_o and_o the_o upon_o this_o course_n of_o godliness_n because_o it_o be_v profitable_a for_o we_o to_o salvation_n yet_o let_v they_o for_o this_o cause_n enlarge_v themselves_o to_o the_o high_a extent_n of_o serve_v god_n because_o they_o know_v it_o be_v the_o will_n of_o god_n that_o in_o all_o thing_n we_o may_v be_v magnify_v as_o the_o son_n of_o such_o a_o eternal_a father_n who_o be_v in_o heaven_n and_o admonish_v we_o say_v 19_o leu._n 19_o beâ—_n you_o holy_a because_o i_o the_o lord_n your_o god_n and_o father_n be_o holy_a have_v promise_v thus_o much_o concern_v the_o harm_n which_o ensue_v the_o ignorance_n of_o a_o certain_a method_n in_o serve_v of_o god_n i_o will_v now_o descend_v to_o the_o first_o part_n which_o be_v the_o general_a instruction_n direct_v we_o in_o all_o our_o action_n wherein_o we_o must_v observe_v these_o seven_o several_a instruction_n and_o help_n 1._o instruction_n that_o know_v ourselves_o to_o be_v naked_a miserable_a and_o of_o all_o good_a thing_n indigent_a we_o shall_v labour_v ever_o by_o all_o mean_n to_o procure_v the_o grace_n and_o help_v of_o god_n that_o there_o may_v be_v such_o a_o change_n make_v in_o our_o soul_n whereby_o all_o those_o which_o for_o their_o last_o rest_n and_o good_a do_v desire_n that_o the_o divine_a majesty_n may_v have_v so_o great_a glory_n as_o it_o have_v and_o this_o be_v to_o be_v one_o spirit_n with_o god_n and_o be_v the_o sum_n of_o all_o christian_a perfection_n for_o it_o be_v a_o doctrine_n clear_a by_o the_o sacred_a scripture_n and_o holy_a father_n that_o we_o be_v all_o bring_v forth_o into_o this_o world_n not_o to_o rest_v and_o settle_v upon_o the_o brittle_a good_a thing_n of_o this_o life_n and_o in_o they_o to_o solace_v ourselves_o see_v they_o be_v the_o least_o low_a and_o vile_a of_o the_o good_a thing_n of_o god_n but_o that_o use_v they_o so_o far_o forth_o as_o they_o serve_v for_o our_o necessity_n according_a to_o god_n ordinance_n we_o spend_v our_o whole_a life_n in_o the_o sublime_a and_o high_a work_n of_o our_o great_a god_n who_o to_o this_o end_n create_v we_o that_o he_o may_v make_v we_o bless_v and_o the_o enjoyer_n of_o his_o own_o self_n who_o be_v a_o infinite_a good_a in_o who_o we_o shall_v far_o more_o eminent_o and_o abundant_o possess_v all_o good_a thing_n than_o we_o be_v able_a to_o magine_v again_o we_o may_v herein_o to_o know_v and_o love_v the_o wonderful_a thing_n of_o god_n take_v exceed_v great_a joy_n thereat_o and_o in_o the_o gospel_n he_o say_v be_v you_o perfect_a 5._o math._n 5._o as_o your_o heavenly_a father_n be_v also_o perfect_a sure_o it_o be_v most_o meet_a that_o he_o be_v holy_a who_o be_v the_o son_n of_o he_o who_o seraphines_n incessant_o call_v holy_a holy_a holy_a that_o necessary_a that_o we_o give_v ourselves_o whole_o to_o virtue_n thereby_o to_o gather_v strength_n or_o else_o to_o flee_v the_o persecution_n while_o our_o power_n do_v no_o more_o suffice_v to_o we_o shall_v be_v judge_v so_o much_o more_o grievous_o by_o how_o much_o we_o have_v be_v find_v more_o unthankful_a for_o benefit_n heap_v upon_o us._n therefore_o in_o this_o case_n it_o be_v a_o with_o strength_n beauty_n agility_n and_o other_o gift_n but_o also_o with_o our_o riches_n dignity_n and_o authority_n to_o glorify_v god_n and_o do_v he_o due_a and_o meet_a obedience_n so_o that_o whatsoever_o good_a thing_n we_o can_v do_v in_o heart_n soul_n mind_n and_o strength_n god_n require_v of_o every_o one_o under_o the_o necessity_n of_o a_o commandment_n yea_o when_o all_o be_v do_v that_o be_v command_v we_o we_o may_v say_v we_o be_v unprofitable_a servant_n if_o he_o be_v worthy_a of_o reprehension_n who_o go_v about_o to_o do_v some_o necessary_a and_o profitable_a thing_n well_o the_o manner_n as_o matter_n 4_o instruction_n that_o the_o cruel_a slaughter_n which_o sin_n have_v make_v in_o man_n soul_n be_v the_o cause_n of_o such_o
great_a difficulty_n in_o serve_v god_n after_o this_o sublime_a and_o heavenly_a manner_n for_o this_o purpose_n those_o that_o will_v serve_v god_n aright_o must_v consider_v their_o own_o disposition_n that_o they_o may_v be_v able_a aright_o to_o meet_v with_o their_o own_o defect_n therefore_o they_o must_v know_v that_o the_o evil_a whereby_o they_o be_v draw_v from_o serve_v god_n after_o this_o most_o divine_a manner_n proceed_v from_o sin_n which_o have_v weaken_v the_o soul_n and_o subdue_v it_o to_o itself_o for_o if_o sin_n have_v not_o interpose_v itself_o we_o shall_v have_v do_v every_o good_a thing_n with_o much_o facility_n but_o sin_n once_o arryve_v in_o the_o soul_n all_o our_o desire_n will_n and_o appetite_n be_v become_v so_o dissolute_a disorder_a and_o rebellious_a by_o that_o grievous_a special_a disease_n arise_v from_o sin_n that_o now_o loathe_v that_o which_o be_v good_a we_o scarce_o love_v affect_v or_o desire_v any_o thing_n save_o the_o most_o abject_a worth_a less_o and_o vicious_a thing_n forget_v that_o infinite_a good_a unto_o which_o we_o be_v create_v as_o the_o thing_n wherein_o we_o have_v neither_o relish_n nor_o savour_n and_o hence_o proceed_v the_o confusion_n and_o perturbation_n of_o the_o soul_n which_o we_o feel_v in_o ourselves_o so_o much_o distract_v from_o the_o true_a god_n whereunto_o we_o be_v create_v that_o the_o thing_n which_o be_v absolute_o and_o only_o good_a be_v cast_v off_o we_o incline_v ever_o and_o greedy_o follow_v that_o which_o be_v evil_a yet_o must_v we_o know_v that_o howsoever_o all_o good_a thing_n with_o great_a difficulty_n yet_o do_v it_o not_o make_v we_o altogether_o so_o impotent_a but_o that_o we_o be_v capable_a of_o grace_n and_o divine_a favour_n whereby_o to_o repair_v this_o our_o former_a overthrow_n and_o destruction_n beside_o we_o must_v observe_v that_o by_o so_o much_o more_o do_v we_o grow_v to_o a_o admirable_a disposition_n of_o serve_v god_n aright_o which_o disposition_n have_v ever_o remain_v in_o the_o soul_n unto_o all_o good_a thing_n if_o sin_n have_v not_o disease_v it_o by_o how_o much_o more_o we_o shall_v have_v our_o appetite_n and_o desire_n repair_v and_o dispose_v which_o by_o sin_n be_v former_o indispose_v and_o he_o shall_v have_v they_o repair_v who_o with_o a_o attentive_a care_n and_o profound_a consideration_n of_o the_o thing_n we_o speak_v of_o shall_v direct_v they_o all_o to_o the_o lord_n with_o a_o repugnancy_n to_o all_o thing_n that_o be_v without_o the_o will_n of_o this_o lord_n and_o a_o follow_v of_o all_o such_o remedy_n as_o be_v here_o describe_v and_o in_o that_o degree_n wherein_o any_o shall_v obtain_v this_o in_o the_o same_o shall_v he_o be_v advance_v here_o in_o sanctity_n and_o afterward_o in_o glory_n and_o there_o be_v no_o doubt_n but_o herein_o one_o may_v so_o profit_v by_o assiduity_n and_o diligence_n as_o that_o he_o may_v do_v all_o thing_n with_o great_a faclity_n and_o delight_n to_o which_o he_o shall_v be_v the_o more_o easy_o advance_v if_o he_o often_o and_o attentive_o read_v these_o instruction_n 5_o instruction_n that_o we_o have_v in_o our_o body_n and_o soul_n sufficient_a mean_n for_o the_o reparation_n of_o this_o decay_n and_o ruin_n if_o they_o be_v stir_v up_o by_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n spirit_n as_o we_o have_v both_o body_n and_o soul_n so_o we_o have_v in_o both_o of_o they_o instrument_n wherewith_o to_o work_v for_o as_o the_o body_n have_v foot_n to_o walk_v hand_n to_o work_n mouth_n to_o speak_v and_o the_o like_a so_o the_o soul_n have_v the_o understanding_n wherewith_o to_o know_v the_o will_n wherewith_o to_o desire_v and_o diverse_a other_o faculty_n of_o the_o appetite_n but_o it_o must_v be_v observe_v that_o the_o more_o excellent_a the_o worker_n be_v together_o with_o the_o instrument_n so_o much_o more_o worthy_a be_v the_o work_n so_o that_o all_o thing_n concur_v to_o the_o act_n be_v suitable_a corporal_a action_n have_v so_o much_o more_o excellency_n in_o they_o by_o how_o much_o the_o instrument_n of_o the_o soul_n concur_v to_o the_o act_n be_v more_o excellent_a now_o that_o be_v call_v a_o singular_a instrument_n which_o to_o the_o production_n of_o the_o act_n be_v move_v by_o a_o good_a end_n therefore_o the_o most_o excellent_a instrument_n be_v the_o understanding_n and_o the_o will_n which_o can_v be_v move_v of_o god_n alone_o as_o we_o have_v say_v in_o the_o second_o instruction_n therefore_o of_o small_a worth_n be_v corporal_a thing_n which_o do_v not_o so_o proceed_v and_o this_o be_v it_o that_o saint_n paul_n say_v 4._o 1._o tim._n 4._o bodily_a labour_n profit_v little_a but_o the_o action_n of_o the_o soul_n be_v of_o another_o kind_n namely_o because_o of_o themselves_o they_o may_v be_v of_o great_a profit_n as_o if_o one_o exercise_v his_o understanding_n shall_v consider_v how_o base_a and_o abject_a the_o honour_n of_o this_o world_n be_v and_o of_o what_o value_n those_o thing_n which_o god_n command_v be_v and_o how_o unspeakable_a that_o glory_n be_v to_o which_o we_o aspire_v also_o to_o know_v how_o one_o may_v moderate_v his_o passion_n and_o the_o like_a again_o if_o one_o exercise_v himself_o in_o his_o will_n love_v that_o which_o he_o know_v be_v good_a and_o refuse_v that_o be_v evil_a such_o refusal_n of_o the_o soul_n shall_v be_v very_o profitable_a albeit_o the_o body_n be_v very_o idle_a for_o by_o such_o exercise_n will_v be_v produce_v excellent_a habit_n and_o the_o evil_a habit_n destroy_v which_o thing_n of_o itself_o be_v very_o laudable_a albeit_o do_v for_o the_o only_a love_n of_o virtue_n as_o philosopher_n do_v yet_o much_o more_o be_v in_o a_o christian_n who_o have_v faith_n but_o most_o of_o all_o if_o in_o every_o work_n we_o join_v faith_n with_o our_o intention_n actual_o direct_v unto_o god_n hence_o may_v it_o be_v observe_v how_o much_o every_o one_o ought_v to_o be_v exercise_v in_o the_o action_n of_o the_o soul_n which_o thing_n he_o may_v do_v whether_o he_o be_v employ_v in_o body_n or_o no_o in_o every_o time_n and_o place_n so_o that_o speak_v with_o another_o in_o any_o temporal_a affair_n yet_o may_v he_o in_o soul_n work_v by_o love_a god_n recal_v to_o mind_n some_o of_o his_o work_n this_o may_v seem_v difficult_a to_o he_o that_o have_v not_o attain_v the_o habit_n thereof_o yet_o custom_n will_v make_v it_o easy_a as_o we_o must_v remember_v that_o virtue_n be_v practise_v about_o difficult_a thing_n therefore_o violence_n be_v to_o be_v use_v to_o the_o will_n that_o thou_o may_v become_v a_o industrious_a workman_n to_o do_v singular_a thing_n with_o facility_n which_o if_o thou_o do_v not_o attempt_v no_o marvel_n be_v it_o that_o thou_o can_v not_o be_v more_o devout_a towards_o god_n see_v he_o be_v ever_o ready_a to_o assist_v thy_o desire_n unto_o that_o which_o be_v good_a and_o to_o withstand_v thy_o proneness_n to_o evil_a so_o that_o thou_o do_v right_o use_v the_o mean_n and_o be_v sure_a that_o if_o thou_o desire_v on_o earth_n to_o be_v a_o great_a and_o excellent_a friend_n and_o servant_n of_o god_n thou_o shall_v the_o soon_o attain_v unto_o it_o by_o how_o much_o thou_o do_v daily_o more_o and_o more_o use_v these_o instrument_n of_o the_o soul_n thy_o understanding_n and_o will_n at_o all_o time_n and_o place_n and_o this_o be_v it_o which_o advance_v the_o saint_n of_o god_n to_o so_o much_o glory_n in_o heaven_n the_o neglect_n whereof_o be_v so_o unblamable_a on_o earth_n see_v then_o our_o high_a glory_n consist_v herein_o for_o the_o most_o part_n that_o we_o work_v by_o these_o instrument_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o our_o ruin_n in_o the_o neglect_n of_o this_o exercise_n let_v we_o see_v what_o course_n we_o must_v take_v who_o have_v as_o yet_o be_v even_o liveless_a to_o use_v these_o instrument_n of_o the_o foul_a and_o that_o we_o may_v begin_v with_o the_o understanding_n leave_v the_o will_n to_o the_o next_o instruction_n we_o will_v premise_v this_o theological_a and_o philosophical_a fundamental_a rule_n that_o our_o natural_a appetite_n do_v natural_o desire_v that_o to_o which_o it_o be_v incline_v &_o seem_v pleasant_a to_o it_o not_o stand_v need_n of_o any_o thing_n to_o help_v or_o invite_v unto_o it_o but_o rather_o necessary_o &_o as_o it_o be_v coact_o desire_v
