he_o but_o more_o his_o mind_n and_o inward_a disposition_n thus_o be_v the_o true_a child_n of_o god_n like_o their_o heavenly_a father_n in_o their_o word_n and_o in_o their_o action_n but_o most_o of_o all_o in_o heart_n it_o be_v no_o matter_n though_o the_o profane_a world_n that_o so_o hate_n god_n that_o it_o can_v endure_v his_o image_n do_v mock_v and_o revile_v it_o be_v thy_o honour_n as_o david_n say_v to_o be_v thus_o more_o vile_a in_o grow_v still_o more_o like_a unto_o he_o in_o holiness_n and_o though_o the_o civil_a man_n count_v thy_o fashion_n a_o little_a odd_a and_o too_o precise_a it_o be_v because_o he_o know_v nothing_o above_o that_o model_n of_o goodness_n he_o have_v set_v himself_o and_o therefore_o approve_v of_o nothing_o beyond_o it_o he_o know_v not_o god_n and_o therefore_o do_v not_o discern_v and_o esteem_v what_o be_v like_a he_o when_o courtier_n come_v down_o into_o the_o country_n the_o common_a homebred_a people_n possible_o think_v their_o with_o man_n and_o ready_o with_o the_o worst_a and_o flatter_v themselves_o with_o that_o comparative_a betterness_n this_o be_v not_o the_o way_n to_o see_v our_o spot_n to_o look_v into_o the_o muddy_a stream_n of_o profane_a man_n life_n but_o look_v into_o the_o clear_a fountain_n of_o the_o word_n and_o there_o we_o may_v both_o discern_v and_o wash_v they_o and_o consider_v the_o infinite_a holiness_n of_o god_n and_o this_o will_v humble_v we_o to_o the_o dust_n when_o isaiah_n see_v the_o glory_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o hear_v the_o seraphim_n cry_v holy_a holy_a holy_a he_o cry_v out_o of_o his_o own_o and_o the_o people_n unholiness_n woe_n be_v i_o for_o i_o be_o undo_v for_o i_o be_o a_o man_n of_o unclean_a lip_n and_o i_o dwell_v in_o the_o midst_n of_o a_o people_n it_o main_o by_o possess_v it_o both_o with_o hope_n and_o fear_n of_o a_o high_a nature_n that_o do_v by_o far_o weigh_v down_o the_o other_o the_o frequent_a assault_n of_o tentation_n be_v upon_o these_o two_o passion_n of_o the_o mind_n therefore_o they_o be_v main_o to_o be_v fortify_v and_o defend_v by_o a_o hope_n and_o fear_v opposite_a to_o those_o that_o do_v assault_v we_o and_o opposite_a to_o perfect_a or_o assure_a hope_n and_o to_o faith_n and_o joy_n if_o you_o understand_v it_o aright_o this_o be_v such_o a_o fear_n as_o do_v not_o prejudge_v but_o preserve_v those_o other_o grace_n and_o the_o comfort_n and_o joy_n that_o arise_v from_o they_o and_o they_o all_o agree_v so_o well_o with_o it_o that_o they_o be_v natural_o help_v each_o to_o other_o it_o be_v superfluous_a to_o insist_v on_o the_o define_n this_o passion_n of_o fear_n and_o the_o manifold_a distinction_n of_o it_o either_o with_o philosopher_n or_o divine_n the_o fear_n here_o recommend_v be_v out_o of_o question_n a_o holy_a self_n suspicion_n and_o fear_n of_o offend_a god_n which_o may_v not_o only_o consist_v with_o assure_a hope_n of_o salvation_n and_o with_o faith_n and_o love_n and_o spiritual_a joy_n but_o be_v their_o inseparable_a companion_n as_o all_o divine_a grace_n be_v link_v together_o as_o they_o say_v of_o their_o three_o grace_n and_o as_o they_o dwell_v together_o they_o grow_v or_o decrease_v together_o the_o more_o a_o christian_n believe_v and_o love_n and_o rejoice_v in_o the_o love_n of_o god_n the_o more_o unwilling_a sure_a to_o displease_v he_o and_o if_o in_o danger_n the_o more_o afraid_a of_o it_o and_o on_o the_o other_o side_n this_o fear_n be_v the_o true_a principle_n of_o a_o wary_a and_o holy_a conversation_n fly_v sin_n and_o the_o occasion_n and_o tentation_n of_o sin_n and_o resist_v they_o when_o they_o set_v on_o be_v as_o a_o watch_n or_o guard_n that_o keep_v out_o the_o enemy_n and_o disturber_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o so_o preserve_v its_o inward_a peace_n keep_v the_o assurance_n of_o faith_n and_o hope_v unmolested_a and_o that_o joy_n which_o they_o cause_v and_o the_o intercourse_n and_o society_n of_o love_n betwixt_o the_o soul_n and_o her_o belove_a uninterrupted_a all_o which_o be_v then_o most_o in_o danger_n when_o this_o fear_n abate_v and_o fall_v to_o slumber_v for_o then_o ready_o some_o notable_a sin_n or_o other_o break_v in_o put_v all_o into_o disorder_n and_o for_o a_o time_n make_v those_o grace_n and_o the_o comfort_n of_o they_o to_o present_a feeling_n as_o much_o to_o seek_v as_o if_o they_o be_v not_o there_o at_o all_o no_o wonder_n then_o if_o the_o apostle_n have_v stir_v up_o his_o christian_a brethren_n whatsoever_o be_v their_o estate_n in_o the_o world_n to_o seek_v to_o be_v rich_a in_o those_o jewel_n of_o faith_n and_o hope_v and_o love_n and_o spiritual_a joy_n and_o then_o consider_v that_o they_o travel_v among_o a_o world_n of_o thief_n and_o robber_n no_o wonder_n i_o say_v that_o he_o add_v this_o advise_v they_o to_o give_v those_o their_o jewel_n in_o custody_n under_o god_n to_o this_o trusty_a and_o watchful_a grace_n of_o godly_a fear_n and_o have_v earnest_o exhort_v they_o to_o holiness_n he_o be_v very_o fit_o particular_a in_o this_o fear_n which_o make_v up_o so_o great_a a_o part_n of_o that_o holiness_n that_o it_o be_v be_v the_o begin_n of_o wisdom_n and_o the_o progress_n and_o increase_v of_o it_o be_v the_o increase_n of_o wisdom_n that_o hardy_a rashness_n that_o many_o account_n valour_n be_v the_o companion_n of_o ignorance_n and_o of_o all_o rashness_n boldness_n to_o sin_n be_v the_o most_o witless_a and_o foolish_a there_o be_v in_o 〈◊〉_d as_o in_o all_o fear_n a_o apprehension_n of_o a_o evil_a that_o we_o consider_v those_o two_o thing_n 1._o how_o joy_n arise_v from_o those_o cause_n 2._o the_o excellency_n of_o this_o joy_n as_o it_o be_v here_o express_v there_o be_v here_o a_o solid_a sufficient_a good_a and_o the_o heart_n make_v sure_a of_o it_o be_v partly_o put_v in_o present_a possession_n of_o it_o and_o in_o a_o most_o certain_a hope_n of_o all_o the_o rest_n and_o what_o can_v be_v more_o require_v to_o make_v it_o joyful_a jesus_n christ_n the_o treasure_n of_o all_o blessing_n receive_v and_o unite_v to_o the_o soul_n by_o faith_n and_o love_n and_o hope_n be_v not_o christ_n the_o light_n and_o joy_n of_o the_o nation_n such_o a_o light_n as_o abraham_n at_o the_o distance_n of_o many_o age_n of_o more_o than_o two_o thousand_o year_n yet_o see_v by_o faith_n and_o see_v rejoice_v beside_o this_o brightness_n that_o make_v light_v a_o joyful_a object_n light_n be_v often_o in_o scripture_n put_v for_o joy_n christ_n this_o light_n bring_v salvation_n with_o he_o he_o be_v the_o sun_n of_o righteousness_n and_o there_o be_v heal_n under_o his_o wing_n i_o bring_v you_o say_v the_o angel_n good_a tiding_n of_o great_a joy_n that_o shall_v be_v to_o all_o people_n and_o their_o song_n have_v in_o it_o the_o matter_n of_o that_o joy_n glory_n to_o god_n in_o the_o high_a peace_n on_o earth_n and_o good_a will_n towards_o men._n but_o to_o the_o end_n we_o may_v rejoice_v in_o christ_n we_o must_v find_v he_o we_o otherwise_o the_o more_o excellent_a he_o be_v the_o more_o cause_o have_v the_o heart_n to_o be_v sad_a while_o it_o have_v no_o portion_n in_o he_o my_o spirit_n have_v rejoice_v say_v the_o bless_a virgin_n in_o god_n my_o saviour_n thus_o 1._o joh._n 1.3_o have_v speak_v of_o our_o communion_n with_o christ_n he_o add_v these_o thing_n i_o write_v that_o your_o joy_n may_v be_v full_a faith_n work_v this_o joy_n by_o unite_v the_o soul_n to_o christ_n and_o apply_v his_o merit_n and_o from_o that_o application_n arise_v the_o pardon_n of_o sin_n and_o so_o that_o load_n of_o misery_n which_o be_v the_o great_a cause_n of_o sorrow_n be_v remove_v and_o so_o soon_o as_o the_o soul_n find_v itself_o lighten_v and_o unload_v of_o that_o burden_n that_o be_v sink_v it_o to_o hell_n it_o can_v choose_v but_o leap_v for_o joy_n in_o the_o ease_n and_o refreshment_n it_o find_v therefore_o
