certain_a that_o the_o best_a way_n to_o secure_v and_o promote_v a_o manâ—_n own_o interest_n be_v to_o secure_v the_o interest_n of_o god_n glory_n with_o the_o utmost_a of_o fide_fw-la lity_n and_o holy_a zeal_n second_o he_o that_o have_v such_o a_o true_a respect_n to_o god_n glory_n as_o this_o text_n require_v will_v be_v grieve_v at_o and_o for_o the_o dishonour_n of_o god_n whether_o it_o be_v do_v by_o himself_o or_o by_o other_o 1._o as_o oft_o as_o his_o conscience_n shall_v charge_v he_o with_o the_o do_v of_o any_o thing_n contrary_a to_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n he_o will_v be_v of_o his_o place_n towards_o such_o as_o relate_v unto_o he_o he_o that_o true_o love_v god_n will_v desire_v as_o many_o rival_n and_o make_v as_o many_o friend_n for_o god_n as_o he_o be_v able_a 3._o he_o that_o be_v true_o desirous_a of_o and_o solicitous_a for_o the_o promote_a and_o maintain_v god_n glory_n will_v rejoice_v in_o it_o more_o than_o in_o any_o thing_n else_o if_o god_n be_v be_v to_o speak_v plain_o by_o way_n of_o explication_n and_o application_n first_o by_o way_n of_o explication_n we_o shall_v inquire_v 1._o what_o this_o salvation_n mean_v which_o be_v to_o be_v wrought_v out_o 2._o what_o it_o be_v to_o work_v out_o our_o own_o salvation_n or_o what_o be_v the_o full_a importance_n of_o that_o phrase_n 3._o how_o or_o whereby_o this_o salvation_n may_v or_o aught_o to_o be_v wrought_v out_o 4._o what_o be_v mean_v by_o those_o word_n which_o concern_v the_o manner_n of_o this_o work_n with_o fear_v and_o tremble_a first_o we_o be_v to_o consider_v what_o this_o salvation_n mean_v that_o be_v right_o understand_v and_o unfeigned_o believe_v contain_v so_o powerful_a a_o motive_n of_o the_o duty_n which_o the_o text_n require_v as_o make_v it_o scarce_o possible_a to_o be_v neglect_v especial_o if_o the_o philosopher_n 1._o arist_n 2._o phys_n thom._n 1._o q._n 82._o a._n 1._o and_o the_o school-man_n be_v not_o deceive_v while_o they_o teach_v we_o that_o every_o one_o do_v natural_o and_o necessary_o desire_v his_o own_o happiness_n for_o if_o that_o be_v so_o how_o can_v it_o be_v that_o a_o man_n shall_v whole_o neglect_v that_o thing_n wherein_o he_o understand_v and_o believe_v his_o only_a happiness_n to_o consist_v so_o that_o the_o general_a reason_n why_o this_o work_n be_v so_o much_o neglect_v seem_v to_o be_v because_o either_o the_o end_n or_o the_o work_n which_o be_v necessary_a to_o it_o be_v not_o right_o understand_v or_o not_o due_o believe_v my_o business_n therefore_o shall_v be_v as_o plain_o as_o i_o can_v to_o inform_v the_o understanding_n in_o each_o particular_a that_o be_v both_o what_o this_o salvation_n be_v and_o what_o work_n be_v absolute_o necessary_a to_o the_o attainment_n thereof_o but_o when_o this_o be_v do_v to_o undertake_v also_o to_o persuade_v the_o belief_n of_o it_o by_o any_o other_o evidence_n than_o will_v be_v contain_v in_o the_o respective_a explication_n and_o declaration_n of_o the_o matter_n of_o it_o from_o scripture_n from_o whence_o only_o it_o can_v be_v declare_v be_v not_o to_o be_v expect_v by_o christian_n because_o their_o be_v such_o suppose_v their_o belief_n of_o that_o evidence_n and_o be_v no_o less_o than_o a_o contradiction_n to_o the_o want_n of_o that_o faith_n come_v we_o then_o to_o the_o first_o of_o our_o inquiry_n viz._n what_o this_o salvation_n be_v which_o the_o text_n speak_v of_o for_o the_o understanding_n of_o that_o word_n a_o fit_a rise_n may_v be_v take_v from_o the_o interpretation_n of_o the_o bless_a name_n of_o jesus_n give_v by_o the_o archangel_n to_o the_o mother_n of_o our_o saviour_n the_o author_n of_o this_o salvation_n matth._n 1.21_o thou_o shall_v call_v his_o name_n jesus_n for_o he_o shall_v save_v his_o people_n from_o their_o sin_n there_o can_v be_v no_o doubt_n but_o that_o this_o be_v the_o salvation_n which_o our_o text_n speak_v of_o for_o salvation_n proper_o signify_v preservation_n or_o deliverance_n from_o evil_n and_o all_o the_o evil_a that_o be_v in_o the_o world_n be_v either_o sin_n or_o the_o consequent_a and_o punishment_n of_o sin_n the_o first_o and_o the_o great_a evil_n be_v that_o of_o sin_n which_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o the_o evil_a of_o punishment_n that_o also_o be_v comprehend_v under_o the_o name_n of_o sin_n by_o a_o ordinary_a metonymy_n but_o then_o to_o confine_v the_o signification_n of_o the_o word_n sin_n in_o the_o angel_n speech_n to_o this_o secondary_a and_o figurative_a sense_n wherein_o it_o be_v take_v for_o the_o punishment_n of_o sin_n with_o exclusion_n of_o the_o first_o and_o most_o proper_a sense_n can_v be_v reasonable_a except_o it_o may_v appear_v to_o be_v necessary_a which_o can_v be_v unless_o the_o design_n of_o this_o jesus_n be_v only_o to_o deliver_v man_n from_o the_o punishment_n and_o not_o at_o all_o from_o the_o dominion_n and_o practice_n of_o sin_n the_o contrary_a whereof_o be_v
