interweave_v and_o marry_v together_o for_o the_o production_n of_o such_o a_o change_n and_o the_o like_a for_o the_o natural_a motion_n of_o the_o element_n in_o the_o constitution_n of_o mix_a body_n though_o every_o cause_n apart_o mouâ—â—_n according_a to_o that_o causality_n and_o course_n of_o nature_n that_o be_v in_o he_o yet_o that_o activity_n be_v draw_v out_o in_o such_o a_o distance_n at_o such_o a_o time_n and_o with_o such_o concurrence_n that_o make_v appear_v at_o once_o the_o efficacy_n and_o wisdom_n of_o the_o counsel_n of_o god_n that_o while_o every_o cause_n move_v according_a to_o his_o own_o nature_n yet_o they_o be_v strange_o mingle_v in_o the_o production_n of_o such_o a_o effect_n that_o neither_o of_o they_o do_v foresee_v or_o intend_v but_o only_o the_o god_n that_o guide_v they_o 5._o it_o be_v a_o active_a and_o irresistible_a counsel_n this_o be_v evident_a by_o what_o have_v be_v before_o observe_v viz._n because_o it_o be_v the_o cause_n and_o measure_n of_o the_o be_v and_o power_n of_o every_o thing_n without_o it_o it_o be_v therefore_o impossible_a to_o be_v resist_v because_o that_o strength_n that_o any_o thing_n have_v it_o have_v mere_o by_o the_o efficacy_n of_o this_o purpose_n of_o god._n although_o in_o the_o divine_a nature_n there_o be_v no_o difference_n in_o the_o power_n or_o act_n of_o his_o understanding_n and_o will_n yet_o for_o our_o conception_n sake_n they_o be_v propound_v under_o a_o different_a notion_n his_o purpose_n or_o counsel_n be_v refer_v immediate_o to_o his_o will_n and_o be_v not_o only_o a_o foreknowledge_n of_o what_o shall_v be_v but_o have_v a_o operative_a influence_n into_o the_o being_n and_o operation_n of_o all_o thing_n his_o prescience_n or_o foreknowledge_n we_o conceive_v as_o a_o act_n of_o his_o understanding_n by_o which_o he_o actual_o know_v whatsoever_o shall_v be_v this_o prescience_n be_v not_o a_o objective_a impression_n of_o the_o thing_n themselves_o upon_o the_o divine_a understanding_n for_o that_o be_v to_o suppose_v a_o kind_n of_o passibility_n which_o be_v incompetible_a to_o the_o divine_a perfection_n and_o suppose_v a_o kind_n of_o priority_n in_o nature_n of_o the_o object_n to_o the_o power_n and_o a_o kind_n of_o dependence_n of_o the_o act_n upon_o it_o but_o as_o all_o thing_n have_v their_o be_v by_o the_o act_n of_o the_o divine_a will_n or_o purpose_n so_o in_o that_o purpose_n of_o he_o he_o see_v the_o thing_n purpose_v and_o it_o be_v impossible_a to_o sever_v the_o act_n of_o his_o purpose_n from_o the_o act_n
likewise_o in_o experience_n take_v but_o the_o instance_n of_o one_o creature_n mankind_n man_n it_o be_v plain_a that_o the_o world_n do_v every_o day_n grow_v full_a and_o full_a that_o which_o be_v now_o almost_o a_o nation_n we_o can_v with_o a_o little_a help_n derive_v into_o one_o man_n five_o hundred_o year_n since_o so_o that_o it_o be_v not_o imaginable_a but_o that_o at_o length_n we_o must_v necessary_o come_v to_o a_o first_o man_n if_o so_o how_o have_v that_o man_n his_o be_v it_o be_v true_a that_o there_o be_v some_o live_a creature_n that_o we_o may_v trace_v their_o beginning_n to_o the_o corruption_n of_o some_o preexi_a matter_n which_o by_o its_o own_o temper_n and_o the_o concurrence_n of_o other_o second_o cause_n may_v produce_v a_o live_a creature_n as_o worm_n mouse_n etc._n etc._n but_o if_o there_o shall_v be_v such_o a_o production_n of_o man_n at_o first_o why_o be_v it_o not_o so_o at_o some_o time_n since_o viz._n that_o a_o man_n shall_v be_v produce_v out_o of_o the_o ground_n by_o some_o concurrence_n of_o the_o disposition_n of_o the_o matter_n with_o second_o cause_n if_o it_o be_v say_v that_o that_o be_v now_o needless_a and_o nature_n do_v nothing_o in_o vain_a the_o answer_n be_v unsatisfactory_a for_o 1._o where_o such_o production_n be_v as_o of_o mouse_n etc._n etc._n it_o be_v as_o needless_a because_o they_o motion_n of_o the_o sun_n which_o be_v successive_a it_o can_v in_o reason_n be_v but_o there_o must_v be_v a_o time_n or_o instant_n wherein_o it_o either_o be_v not_o or_o do_v not_o move_v for_o otherwise_o the_o revolution_n will_v be_v actual_o infinite_a in_o number_n and_o yet_o that_o infinite_a number_n of_o revolution_n be_v still_o augment_v by_o daily_o new_a revolution_n which_o will_v be_v in_o itself_o a_o contradiction_n that_o that_o which_o be_v before_o actual_o infinite_a shall_v yet_o receive_v a_o increase_n as_o necessary_o it_o must_v if_o the_o motion_n of_o the_o sun_n have_v never_o a_o beginning_n therefore_o of_o necessity_n it_o have_v a_o beginning_n if_o it_o have_v a_o beginning_n of_o its_o motion_n it_o can_v not_o have_v it_o from_o itself_o for_o why_o do_v it_o not_o then_o move_v soon_o but_o of_o necessity_n it_o must_v have_v the_o beginning_n from_o another_o for_o though_o animate_v creature_n move_v themselves_o yet_o they_o receive_v still_o the_o original_a cause_n of_o their_o motion_n from_o something_o without_o they_o as_o well_o as_o of_o their_o be_v who_o or_o what_o be_v it_o that_o give_v it_o that_o motion_n or_o principle_n of_o its_o motion_n and_o if_o any_o can_v assign_v any_o other_o than_o the_o first_o cause_n which_o be_v not_o almost_o imaginable_a yet_o still_o my_o enquiry_n must_v rise_v high_a what_o be_v that_o that_o give_v be_v or_o causality_n to_o that_o cause_n so_o that_o in_o sum_n the_o motion_n of_o the_o sun_n or_o heaven_n can_v be_v eternal_a because_o successive_a it_o must_v have_v a_o cause_n of_o its_o motion_n from_o without_o itself_o that_o cause_n if_o the_o first_o cause_n than_o a_o first_o cause_n must_v be_v grant_v if_o not_o the_o first_o yet_o by_o the_o same_o reason_n that_o in_o all_o successive_a motion_n we_o must_v admit_v a_o beginning_n we_o may_v conclude_v in_o all_o succession_n of_o cause_n there_o must_v be_v a_o beginning_n because_o the_o be_v and_o causation_n or_o motion_n of_o second_o cause_n be_v likewise_o successive_a and_o therefore_o can_v be_v no_o more_o infinite_a than_o the_o successive_a motion_n of_o the_o same_o subject_n can_v be_v infinite_a it_o be_v impossible_a that_o any_o thing_n shall_v be_v eternal_a that_o be_v not_o indivisible_a ut_fw-la videbitur_fw-la infra_fw-la so_o that_o the_o succession_n of_o cause_n and_o motion_n be_v that_o which_o do_v necessary_o enforce_v a_o first_o cause_n to_o these_o we_o may_n add_v those_o part_n consideration_n which_o arise_v from_o the_o observation_n of_o the_o create_a world_n the_o subservience_n of_o one_o thing_n to_o the_o preservation_n of_o another_o the_o inclination_n of_o creature_n without_o choice_n to_o mean_n conducible_a to_o their_o preservation_n the_o order_n and_o fit_v of_o thing_n whereby_o confusion_n and_o uselessness_n of_o creature_n be_v avoid_v all_o which_o do_v bespeak_v the_o admission_n of_o a_o voluntary_a intellectual_a supreme_a and_o universal_a cause_n of_o all_o thing_n now_o a_o first_o cause_n be_v admit_v we_o be_v to_o consider_v what_o may_v rational_o be_v deduce_v from_o thence_o concern_v kind_n than_o the_o cause_n that_o immediate_o produce_v it_o as_o the_o production_n of_o a_o worm_n out_o of_o putrefaction_n a_o plant_n out_o of_o the_o earth_n etc._n etc._n but_o there_o the_o effect_n be_v not_o pure_o due_a to_o the_o second_o cause_n but_o to_o the_o original_a operation_n of_o the_o first_o cause_n that_o do_v put_v that_o activity_n in_o the_o second_o cause_n to_o produce_v such_o effect_n for_o every_o second_o cause_n work_v and_o move_v in_o the_o virtue_n and_o efficacy_n of_o the_o first_o cause_n and_o have_v its_o causality_n from_o it_o as_o well_o as_o its_o be_v without_o which_o though_o it_o have_v its_o be_v it_o be_v impossible_a it_o shall_v be_v operative_a this_o perfection_n in_o the_o first_o cause_n be_v in_o truth_n inconceptible_a because_o impossible_a for_o humane_a understanding_n to_o receive_v it_o without_o divine_a revelation_n and_o much_o more_o impossible_a to_o comprehend_v it_o because_o infinite_a therefore_o to_o help_v ourselves_o herein_o we_o do_v and_o that_o rational_o attribute_n to_o the_o first_o be_v that_o manner_n of_o be_v that_o we_o find_v most_o perfect_a therefore_o from_o this_o perfection_n it_o follow_v 1._o that_o the_o first_o cause_n be_v a_o most_o pure_a act_n without_o any_o mixture_n of_o passibility_n or_o power_n for_o if_o there_o be_v any_o power_n as_o it_o signify_v a_o susceptibility_n of_o some_o further_a act_n or_o impression_n that_o be_v a_o imperfection_n for_o whatsoever_o be_v susceptible_a of_o some_o further_a act_n as_o all_o power_n be_v it_o be_v impossible_a it_o shall_v be_v perfect_a and_o from_o hence_o follow_v his_o omnipotence_n for_o all_o inability_n to_o do_v any_o thing_n proceed_v from_o the_o want_n of_o activity_n in_o the_o agent_n to_o overcome_v that_o resistance_n that_o it_o find_v in_o the_o thing_n to_o be_v do_v now_o in_o the_o first_o cause_n there_o want_v no_o activity_n for_o it_o be_v a_o most_o pure_a act_n life_n be_v perfect_a than_o the_o vegetative_a and_o the_o rational_a life_n than_o the_o sensitive_a and_o the_o life_n of_o a_o spirit_n than_o the_o life_n of_o a_o body_n now_o this_o first_o cause_n be_v a_o infinite_a and_o pure_a act_n he_o have_v a_o infinite_a perfect_a life_n 4._o from_o hence_o it_o follow_v that_o he_o be_v a_o intellectual_a be_v and_o as_o all_o his_o work_n cause_n without_o which_o he_o can_v not_o be_v perfect_a for_o if_o any_o thing_n that_o be_v or_o may_v be_v be_v hide_v from_o he_o then_o by_o the_o discovery_n of_o that_o to_o he_o he_o will_v conceive_v by_o we_o under_o different_a notion_n and_o conception_n as_o for_o instance_n we_o see_v a_o effect_n of_o the_o first_o cause_n which_o in_o case_n of_o a_o man_n we_o derive_v from_o that_o habit_n in_o man_n which_o we_o call_v mercy_n and_o another_o effect_n which_o in_o man_n we_o will_v conclude_v to_o come_v from_o such_o a_o quality_n or_o habit_n which_o we_o know_v by_o the_o name_n of_o justice_n hence_o we_o style_v the_o first_o cause_n merciful_a and_o just_a yet_o in_o truth_n neither_o of_o these_o be_v proper_a for_o they_o signify_v quality_n neither_o if_o they_o be_v proper_a be_v they_o distinct_a for_o they_o be_v the_o same_o one_o with_o another_o and_o both_o the_o same_o with_o his_o essence_n otherwise_o it_o be_v impossible_a he_o shall_v be_v simple_a for_o shall_v his_o be_v and_o attribute_n be_v several_a he_o shall_v be_v compound_v of_o substance_n and_o accident_n or_o shall_v the_o same_o thing_n which_o we_o call_v justice_n be_v the_o same_o with_o his_o essence_n and_o not_o the_o same_o with_o his_o mercy_n he_o must_v needs_o consist_v of_o several_a being_n divide_v one_o from_o another_o the_o like_a for_o all_o the_o be_v affirm_v of_o it_o at_o one_o instant_n must_v necessary_o be_v affirm_v of_o it_o eternal_o this_o can_v stand_v with_o any_o change_n for_o before_o that_o change_n that_o can_v not_o be_v affirm_v of_o he_o which_o may_v be_v affirm_v after_o if_o it_o shall_v be_v admit_v 3._o it_o be_v inconsistent_a with_o his_o simplicity_n some_o thing_n have_v accidental_a change_n which_o yet_o in_o essence_n continue_v the_o same_o as_o from_o ignorance_n to_o knowledge_n from_o one_o colour_n to_o another_o but_o such_o accidental_a change_n can_v be_v in_o that_o which_o be_v ens_fw-la simplicissimum_fw-la because_o there_o can_v be_v nothing_o in_o he_o which_o be_v not_o his_o essence_n 4._o it_o be_v inconsistent_a with_o his_o infinitude_n for_o to_o whatsoever_o any_o thing_n cause_n in_o point_n of_o his_o essence_n and_o nature_n so_o in_o some_o respect_n it_o be_v concern_v his_o acts._n these_o be_v of_o two_o kind_n viz._n the_o immanent_a act_n such_o be_v the_o act_n of_o his_o understanding_n and_o will_n and_o these_o be_v immutable_a as_o well_o as_o his_o essence_n for_o indeed_o they_o be_v but_o notional_o divide_v from_o it_o in_o we_o our_o will_n be_v one_o thing_n and_o our_o will_v another_o but_o that_o be_v inconsistent_a with_o the_o simplicity_n of_o the_o first_o cause_n hence_o it_o be_v that_o as_o his_o essence_n so_o his_o will_n be_v immutable_a he_o will_v nothing_o now_o but_o what_o he_o ever_o will_v and_o understand_v from_o eternity_n what_o he_o now_o know_v for_o eternity_n have_v neither_o now_o nor_o then_o in_o it_o 2._o the_o emanant_fw-la act_n those_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o the_o execution_n of_o that_o immutable_a will_n these_o be_v subject_a to_o mutation_n but_o without_o the_o least_o mutation_n either_o in_o the_o essence_n or_o will_n of_o the_o first_o cause_n 1._o not_o in_o his_o essence_n it_o be_v true_a here_o be_v a_o new_a relation_n that_o be_v not_o before_o for_o when_o the_o forth_o itself_o in_o a_o causation_n as_o it_o be_v before_o it_o do_v of_o necessity_n import_v a_o change_n in_o the_o thing_n effect_v viz._n a_o motion_n à _fw-la non_fw-la esse_fw-la
