have_v towards_o our_o lord_n jesus_n and_o all_o saint_n both_o these_o object_n belong_v in_o common_a to_o love_n the_o former_a only_o to_o faith_n by_o faith_n only_o we_o apprehend_v christ_n and_o unite_v ourselves_o to_o he_o but_o by_o love_n we_o apprehend_v and_o unite_v ourselves_o both_o to_o christ_n and_o our_o fellow-member_n thus_o then_o be_v the_o meaning_n of_o the_o word_n distinguish_v but_o confound_v neither_o can_v the_o apostle_n say_v these_o three_o but_z these_z two_o remain_z neither_o can_v charity_n be_v prefer_v before_o faith_n in_o respect_n of_o long_a durance_n for_o the_o form_n of_o a_o thing_n be_v the_o thing_n itself_o and_o therefore_o as_o long_o as_o the_o form_n last_v so_o long_o the_o thing_n itself_o continue_v second_o the_o justify_v in_o herself_o this_o doctrine_n be_v full_a of_o comfort_n to_o those_o that_o be_v discourage_v in_o regard_n of_o the_o small_a measure_n of_o their_o faith_n but_o it_o be_v not_o the_o measure_n of_o thy_o faith_n or_o the_o strength_n of_o thy_o faith_n that_o justify_v but_o christ_n apprehend_v by_o thy_o faith_n whether_o strong_a or_o weak_a and_o a_o palsie-trembling_a hand_n will_v receive_v a_o alm_n as_o well_o as_o a_o strong_a so_o the_o squint-eyed_a or_o purblind_a israelite_n be_v heal_v by_o the_o look_n on_o the_o brazen_a serpent_n as_o well_o as_o they_o who_o eye_n be_v better_a last_o from_o this_o manner_n of_o phrase_n wherein_o christ_n be_v make_v the_o object_n of_o faith_n namely_o faith_n in_o christ._n some_o do_v gather_v that_o faith_n proper_o be_v a_o act_n of_o the_o will_n rest_v itself_o on_o christ_n and_o not_o of_o the_o understanding_n believe_v the_o truth_n of_o the_o promise_n in_o particular_a for_o then_o they_o say_v the_o faith_n of_o person_n unregenerate_a who_o have_v not_o that_o confidence_n in_o christ_n as_o joh._n 2._o 23._o many_o believe_v in_o his_o name_n see_v his_o miracle_n where_o by_o believe_v in_o his_o name_n be_v mean_v only_o that_o credence_n which_o they_o give_v to_o christ_n as_o a_o true_a prophet_n and_o no_o deceiver_n which_o be_v wring_v from_o they_o by_o force_n of_o his_o feel_v diverse_a time_n this_o action_n of_o our_o will_n in_o cleave_v to_o the_o promise_n when_o yet_o we_o feel_v not_o so_o clear_o the_o action_n of_o our_o understanding_n in_o assent_v unto_o nature_n be_v first_o thus_o much_o for_o the_o object_n of_o faith_n now_o of_o love_n object_n they_o be_v two_o the_o two_o object_n of_o love_n two_o former_a she_o have_v in_o common_a with_o faith_n viz._n christ._n the_o latter_a proper_a to_o herself_o and_o all_o saint_n the_o first_o object_n of_o our_o love_n be_v christ_n who_o be_v to_o christ_n first_o christ_n be_v love_v in_o many_o respect_n first_o as_o he_o be_v god_n for_o himself_o for_o the_o matter_n of_o love_n be_v good_a christ_n be_v god_n the_o chief_a good_a in_o who_o lie_v hide_v all_o the_o treasure_n of_o have_v now_o here_o be_v two_o thing_n to_o be_v consider_v first_o what_o that_o be_v which_o paul_n pray_v for_o in_o philemon_n behalf_n the_o efficacy_n of_o his_o faith_n second_o wherein_o this_o efficacy_n of_o faith_n consist_v first_o in_o communication_n that_o the_o communication_n of_o thy_o faith_n may_v be_v make_v effectual_a that_o be_v that_o thy_o faith_n by_o communicate_v may_v be_v make_v effectual_a second_o in_o the_o knowledge_n of_o whatsoever_o good_a be_v in_o he_o by_o christ_n for_o the_o first_o that_o efficacy_n of_o faith_n which_o here_o paul_n desire_v for_o philemon_z be_v two_o first_o in_o regard_n of_o philemon_z himself_o that_o it_o may_v work_v effectual_o in_o he_o second_o in_o regard_n of_o other_o that_o it_o may_v be_v examplarie_a to_o not_o one_o hour_n with_o our_o saviour_n so_o likewise_o in_o the_o philippian_n phil._n 4._o 10._o of_o who_o when_o the_o apostle_n say_v that_o they_o be_v reviue_v or_o as_o the_o word_n signify_v waxen_a green_a or_o fresh_a again_o in_o their_o love_n and_o liberality_n towards_o he_o thereby_o he_o declare_v that_o for_o a_o time_n they_o be_v like_o tree_n that_o in_o the_o also_o have_v her_o winter_n namely_o the_o storm_n and_o tempest_n of_o temptation_n which_o by_o their_o violence_n shake_v off_o all_o her_o green_a and_o glorious_a leave_n and_o so_o make_v she_o appear_v naked_a and_o desolate_a she_o be_v drive_v into_o the_o secret_a corner_n of_o the_o heart_n and_o there_o for_o a_o time_n to_o lie_v gasp_v and_o pant_v ready_a to_o give_v up_o the_o ghost_n therefore_o revel_v 3._o 2._o they_o of_o sardi_n be_v will_v to_o strengthen_v the_o thing_n that_o be_v ready_a to_o die_v faith_n of_o it_o own_o nature_n be_v very_o laborious_a and_o philemon_n faith_n may_v be_v preserve_v from_o this_o lethargy_n and_o sleepiness_n to_o the_o which_o in_o itself_o it_o be_v subject_a and_o so_o may_v show_v itself_o to_o be_v a_o lively_a and_o effectual_a faith_n second_o observe_v how_o faith_n be_v by_o satan_n doct._n 2_o craft_n cast_v into_o this_o dead_a sleep_n may_v be_v awaken_v faith_n prayer_n recover_v faint_a faith_n and_o how_o it_o may_v shake_v off_o this_o spiritual_a laziness_n namely_o by_o this_o spiritual_a exercise_n of_o prayer_n therefore_o here_o paul_n pray_v for_o philemon_z that_o his_o faith_n may_v be_v
