the_o hear_n of_o many_n come_v thither_o will_v great_o aggravat_fw-la your_o guilt_n who_o neglect_v so_o great_a a_o salvation_n therefore_o take_v two_o or_o three_o caveat_n of_o this_o doctrine_n and_o 1._o beware_v of_o be_v secure_a because_o there_o be_v many_o that_o shall_v be_v justify_v there_o be_v many_o more_o that_o will_v perish_v compare_v these_o that_o perish_v with_o these_o that_o will_v be_v save_v and_o it_o will_v be_v find_v that_o they_o be_v but_o a_o handful_n that_o will_v be_v save_v and_o that_o swarm_n and_o multitude_n will_v go_v to_o hell_n therefore_o when_o you_o hear_v that_o the_o door_n be_v open_v to_o many_o let_v it_o encourage_v you_o to_o enter_v in_o but_o remember_v this_o that_o more_o will_v be_v exclude_v and_o perish_v then_o will_v enter_v in_o and_o be_v save_v the_o scripture_n say_v many_o be_v call_v but_o few_o be_v choose_v even_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o call_v within_o the_o visible_a church_n 2._o consider_v that_o grace_n enlarge_n of_o this_o benefit_n to_o take_v in_o many_o will_v be_v your_o great_a challenge_n and_o aggravation_n that_o shall_v miss_v and_o come_v short_a of_o it_o therefore_o let_v we_o as_o it_o be_v hâ—b_n 4._o fear_v least_o have_v a_o promise_n leave_v unto_o we_o of_o enter_v into_o his_o rest_n any_o of_o as_o shall_v seem_v to_o come_v short_a of_o it_o when_o this_o door_n be_v open_v to_o we_o we_o will_v by_o all_o mean_n fear_v come_v short_a or_o not_o enter_v through_o unbelief_n for_o it_o will_v be_v worse_o with_o we_o then_o if_o the_o door_n have_v never_o be_v open_v folk_n ordinary_o think_v not_o so_o much_o to_o miss_v or_o come_v short_a of_o a_o privilege_n which_o but_o one_o or_o two_o have_v access_n to_o but_o when_o it_o be_v such_o a_o privilege_n as_o be_v make_v attainable_a by_o many_o the_o miss_v of_o it_o gall_v and_o torment_v the_o more_o and_o when_o many_o shall_v come_v from_o the_o east_n west_n south_n and_o north_n and_o shall_v sit_v down_o with_o abraham_n isaac_n and_o jacob_n in_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n what_o weep_v and_o gnash_n of_o tooth_n will_v it_o cause_v to_o they_o who_o shall_v be_v seclude_v and_o therefore_o 3_o beware_v of_o think_v that_o there_o be_v the_o less_o diligence_n or_o fear_v require_v because_o we_o say_v that_o many_o will_v be_v justify_v for_o though_o there_o be_v many_o that_o be_v redeem_a and_o many_o that_o shall_v be_v justify_v yet_o all_o these_o come_v to_o be_v justify_v through_o christ_n knowledge_n and_o therefore_o such_o as_o be_v ignorant_a and_o profane_a can_v but_o take_v little_a or_o no_o comfort_n hence_o while_o they_o continue_v to_o be_v such_o though_o there_o be_v many_o that_o be_v justify_v yet_o none_o but_o believer_n be_v justify_v and_o none_o can_v warrantable_o look_v on_o themselves_o to_o be_v believer_n but_o such_o as_o be_v sincere_a student_n of_o holiness_n i_o will_v not_o therefore_o have_v you_o lay_v weight_n either_o on_o many_o or_o few_n be_v justify_v except_o by_o way_n of_o motive_n but_o on_o the_o way_n that_o you_o take_v to_o come_v by_o the_o end_n though_o a_o great_a many_o more_o be_v save_v then_o will_v be_v if_o you_o take_v not_o the_o way_n of_o faith_n and_o holiness_n to_o come_v to_o salvation_n you_o will_v not_o get_v yourselves_o shroud_v in_o the_o fain_o be_v justify_v in_o god_n own_o way_n it_o be_v also_o ground_n of_o shame_n and_o confusion_n of_o face_n to_o the_o unbeliever_n that_o restrain_v the_o benefit_n of_o christ_n purchase_n and_o shut_v himself_o out_o when_o grace_n do_v make_v use_n of_o such_o expression_n to_o bring_v he_o in_o and_o it_o will_v be_v ground_n of_o conviction_n to_o all_o that_o have_v so_o wide_a a_o door_n open_v to_o they_o and_o do_v not_o strive_v to_o enter_v in_o it_o may_v be_v many_o of_o you_o think_v little_a of_o this_o now_o but_o in_o that_o day_n when_o many_o shall_v be_v take_v into_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n and_o other_o shut_v out_o it_o will_v be_v know_v to_o be_v a_o matter_n of_o great_a concerment_n if_o once_o we_o can_v be_v induce_v to_o be_v in_o earnest_n a_o great_a matter_n to_o have_v the_o solid_a impression_n of_o christ_n fullness_n on_o our_o spirit_n and_o to_o be_v thorough_o persuade_v that_o there_o be_v a_o rigteousness_n to_o be_v have_v in_o he_o yet_o the_o consolation_n be_v not_o full_a unless_o there_o be_v clearness_n in_o the_o way_n how_o this_o righteousness_n be_v apply_v and_o come_v by_o and_o a_o kind_o yield_v to_o follow_v that_o way_n for_o though_o we_o know_v that_o christ_n die_v and_o that_o there_o be_v a_o righteousness_n purchase_v yet_o there_o be_v many_o that_o be_v never_o justify_v and_o that_o shall_v never_o be_v save_v by_o it_o and_o therefore_o it_o will_v not_o be_v so_o much_o to_o know_v that_o there_o be_v such_o a_o thing_n if_o he_o have_v not_o lay_v down_o a_o way_n how_o we_o may_v be_v partaker_n of_o it_o which_o way_n can_v no_o more_o fail_v and_o misgive_v than_o christ_n righteousness_n can_v and_o these_o word_n hold_v out_o the_o way_n by_o his_o knowledge_n lead_v we_o to_o a_o more_o distinct_a uptake_n of_o it_o there_o be_v ground_n for_o they_o all_o in_o the_o text_n and_o therefore_o we_o shall_v put_v they_o together_o that_o you_o may_v have_v a_o short_a view_n of_o this_o great_a benefit_n complex_o there_o be_v common_o six_o cause_n assign_v to_o or_o make_v necessary_a to_o concur_v in_o justification_n though_o we_o know_v not_o well_o how_o to_o express_v they_o so_o as_o you_o may_v take_v they_o up_o because_o of_o the_o ignorance_n of_o many_o of_o you_o 1._o there_o be_v the_o efficient_a cause_n and_o that_o be_v god_n the_o party_n that_o do_v justify_v 2._o the_o end_n or_o final_a cause_n and_o that_o be_v his_o own_o glory_n 3._o the_o meritorious_a cause_n or_o that_o which_o procure_v it_o or_o the_o ground_n on_o which_o god_n justify_v and_o that_o be_v christ_n merit_n 4._o the_o inward_a instrumental_a cause_n by_o which_o we_o get_v a_o tittle_n to_o and_o a_o interest_n in_o christ_n merit_n and_o that_o be_v faith_n 5._o the_o formal_a cause_n or_o that_o wherein_o justification_n consist_v and_o that_o be_v imputation_n of_o christ_n righteousness_n to_o the_o sinner_n upon_o his_o acceptation_n of_o it_o and_o the_o absolve_a of_o the_o sinner_n by_o virtue_n of_o his_o righteousness_n 6._o the_o external_n instrumental_a cause_n and_o that_o be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n by_o which_o this_o justification_n be_v reveal_v and_o wherein_o god_n declare_v and_o pass_v the_o sentence_n for_o the_o first_o you_o will_v for_o clear_v of_o it_o remember_v what_o we_o speak_v in_o our_o enter_v on_o this_o doctrine_n
think_v we_o must_v report_v can_v we_o report_v any_o other_o way_n than_o it_o be_v with_o you_o shall_v we_o or_o dare_v we_o say_v that_o such_o a_o man_n be_v a_o fine_a civil_a man_n and_o that_o therefore_o he_o will_v not_o be_v reckon_v with_o though_o he_o believe_v not_o in_o christ_n no_o no_o but_o this_o must_v be_v the_o report_n that_o such_o a_o man_n and_o such_o a_o kind_n of_o man_n though_o christ_n be_v long_o woo_v they_o will_v not_o embrace_v he_o though_o he_o invite_v they_o to_o the_o wedding_n yet_o they_o will_v not_o come_v nay_o they_o mock_v and_o spurn_v at_o it_o they_o tread_v the_o blood_n of_o the_o covenant_n under_o foot_n and_o count_v god_n a_o liar_n in_o all_o his_o offer_n and_o say_v by_o their_o practice_n that_o they_o shall_v be_v happy_a though_o they_o take_v not_o this_o way_n many_o of_o you_o who_o will_v not_o take_v it_o well_o if_o we_o shall_v speak_v this_o to_o you_o in_o particular_a will_v find_v it_o to_o be_v a_o truth_n one_o day_n and_o if_o you_o shall_v say_v what_o will_v we_o be_v at_o the_o answer_n be_v at_o hand_n believe_v in_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n and_o you_o shall_v be_v save_v this_o be_v the_o end_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o the_o mean_a of_o your_o happiness_n it_o be_v the_o great_a and_o the_o main_a thing_n that_o we_o call_v for_o which_o if_o it_o be_v not_o obtain_v the_o ground_n of_o the_o complaint_n will_v continue_v and_o do_v you_o think_v this_o any_o strange_a hard_a or_o uncouth_a thing_n that_o when_o we_o bring_v to_o you_o the_o offer_v of_o christ_n in_o the_o gospel_n we_o bid_v you_o receive_v it_o and_o flee_v in_o to_o he_o to_o hide_v you_o from_o the_o wrath_n to_o come_v and_o yet_o this_o be_v all_o we_o seek_v of_o you_o it_o be_v neither_o your_o shame_n nor_o your_o skaith_n that_o we_o seek_v but_o that_o you_o may_v take_v with_o your_o sin_n that_o you_o may_v judge_v and_o condemn_v yourselves_o that_o your_o mouth_n may_v be_v stop_v before_o god_n and_o that_o you_o may_v flee_v to_o jesus_n christ_n in_o earnest_n and_o close_o with_o he_o on_o his_o own_o term_n as_o therefore_o you_o will_v prevent_v the_o great_o complaint_n which_o isaiah_n have_v in_o his_o own_o name_n and_o in_o the_o name_n of_o all_o the_o minister_n of_o the_o gospel_n that_o the_o savoury_a report_n concern_v jesus_n christ_n be_v not_o receive_v and_o that_o though_o life_n and_o salvation_n through_o he_o be_v offer_v to_o many_o yet_o there_o be_v but_o few_o scarce_o here_o one_o and_o there_o one_o that_o do_v embrace_v it_o this_o be_v the_o sad_a result_n lord_n who_o have_v believe_v our_o report_n word_n that_o be_v speak_v by_o such_o a_o prophet_n and_o so_o often_o mention_v in_o the_o new-testament_n may_v and_o shall_v as_o often_o as_o we_o speak_v hear_v or_o reâ—d_v they_o put_v both_o minister_n and_o people_n to_o a_o holy_a demur_n and_o to_o look_v what_o become_v of_o all_o our_o preach_a and_o hear_v when_o this_o be_v all_o the_o fruit_n even_o of_o isaiah_n preach_v as_o to_o the_o great_a part_n of_o his_o hearer_n ere_o we_o leave_v this_o part_n of_o the_o verse_n it_o will_v not_o be_v unmeet_a that_o we_o speak_v a_o little_a to_o these_o three_o first_o to_o what_o may_v be_v the_o cause_n why_o when_o the_o gospel_n be_v powerful_o preach_v there_o be_v so_o few_o believer_n second_o how_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v see_v so_o few_o believe_v that_o general_o so_o many_o think_v they_o believe_v and_o so_o few_o suspect_v their_o own_o faith_n and_o three_o to_o the_o necessity_n that_o lie_v on_o the_o hearer_n of_o the_o gospel_n to_o inquire_v at_o and_o try_v themselves_o concern_v their_o faith_n and_o to_o have_v some_o solid_a satisfaction_n in_o it_o although_o we_o mention_v no_o particular_a doctrine_n now_o yet_o consider_v the_o doctrine_n we_o speak_v to_o before_o these_o thing_n will_v not_o be_v unsuitable_a to_o they_o nor_o impertinent_a to_o you_o for_o the_o first_o the_o cause_n why_o so_o few_o believe_v the_o gospel_n we_o clear_v to_o you_o already_o that_o general_o the_o powerful_a preach_v of_o the_o gospel_n have_v be_v with_o little_a fruit_n so_o that_o isaiah_n have_v this_o sad_a complaint_n lord_n who_o have_v believe_v our_o report_n and_o our_o lord_n jesus_n have_v it_o also_o on_o the_o matter_n mat._n 11.7_o we_o have_v pipe_v to_o you_o and_o you_o have_v not_o dance_v we_o have_v mourn_v to_o you_o and_o you_o have_v not_o lament_v and_o in_o the_o same_o express_a word_n john_n 12.38_o and_o when_o it_o be_v so_o with_o sweet_a isaiah_n in_o the_o old_a testament_n and_o with_o our_o bless_a lord_n in_o the_o new_a that_o speak_v with_o such_o power_n and_o authority_n you_o may_v see_v there_o be_v reason_n for_o we_o to_o inquire_v into_o the_o cause_n why_o it_o be_v that_o so_o few_o believe_v in_o speak_v to_o which_o 1._o we_o intend_v not_o to_o touch_v on_o all_o the_o reason_n that_o may_v be_v gather_v together_o of_o people_n not_o profit_v under_o the_o gospel_n but_o of_o these_o that_o you_o have_v most_o reason_n to_o look_v to_o and_o that_o be_v most_o obstructive_a of_o faith_n in_o you_o 2._o though_o we_o may_v speak_v of_o reason_n on_o the_o side_n of_o they_o that_o speak_v to_o you_o for_o who_o be_v sufficient_a for_o these_o thing_n and_o we_o shall_v not_o deny_v but_o we_o have_v culpable_a accession_n to_o your_o unfruitfulness_n yet_o it_o be_v not_o much_o to_o your_o edify_a to_o insist_v on_o these_o 3._o neither_o will_v we_o speak_v to_o these_o sovereign_a cause_n on_o god_n part_n who_o in_o his_o holy_a justice_n give_v up_o people_n to_o unfruitfulness_n when_o they_o receive_v not_o the_o truth_n in_o love_n neither_o 4_o shall_v we_o insist_v on_o these_o cause_n that_o may_v arise_v from_o the_o devil_n who_o wait_v on_o wherever_o the_o word_n be_v preach_v to_o mar_v the_o fruit_n of_o it_o as_o we_o may_v see_v mat._n 13.19_o the_o evil_a spirit_n like_v as_o many_o crow_n when_o the_o seed_n of_o the_o word_n be_v sow_v wait_v on_o to_o pick_v it_o up_o and_o you_o will_v know_v that_o you_o never_o come_v to_o hear_v the_o word_n but_o there_o be_v as_o it_o be_v flock_n of_o devil_n attend_v you_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o some_o be_v rock_v and_o lull_v asleep_o some_o have_v their_o mind_n fill_v with_o worldly_a thought_n some_o forget_v all_o that_o they_o hear_v ere_o they_o go_v out_o of_o door_n thus_o it_o be_v with_o many_o hearer_n of_o this_o gospel_n their_o heart_n be_v tread_v upon_o as_o the_o way-side_n by_o devil_n and_o foul-spirit_n that_o never_o a_o word_n take_v impression_n on_o they_o and_o though_o you_o may_v think_v such_o expression_n uncouth-like_a and_o strange_a yet_o they_o be_v sad_o true_a satan_n wait_v on_o when_o christ_n preach_v and_o sure_o he_o will_v scar_v no_o more_o to_o do_v so_o at_o our_o preach_v than_o he_o do_v at_o his_o if_o he_o stand_v at_o joshua_n right_a hand_n to_o resist_v he_o he_o will_v no_o doubt_n be_v at_o we_o but_o we_o say_v we_o will_v not_o insist_v on_o these_o but_o 5_o we_o shall_v speak_v a_o little_a to_o these_o cause_n that_o be_v common_a in_o you_o which_o you_o yourselves_o mâ—ght_v know_v if_o you_o will_v observe_v they_o and_o we_o will_v exhort_v you_o to_o take_v notice_n of_o they_o when_o we_o tell_v you_o of_o they_o first_o then_o we_o offer_v or_o rather_o assert_v this_o for_o a_o cause_n the_o want_n of_o serious_a mind_v the_o great_a concernment_n of_o the_o work_n of_o your_o salvation_n and_o that_o this_o preach_v gospel_n be_v the_o word_n of_o the_o lord_n by_o which_o you_o must_v be_v save_v alace_o

will_v think_v your_o faith_n as_o great_a a_o folly_n when_o there_o shall_v be_v as_o clear_a evidence_n to_o prove_v the_o rottenness_n of_o your_o faith_n and_o hope_n as_o there_o be_v even_o to_o common_a sense_n to_o prove_v the_o image_n make_v of_o a_o piece_n tree_n not_o to_o be_v god_n when_o it_o shall_v be_v find_v and_o declare_v that_o though_o you_o be_v never_o convince_v of_o sin_n nor_o of_o your_o misery_n and_o lose_a condition_n be_v never_o humble_v nor_o touch_v under_o the_o kindly_a sense_n of_o it_o never_o flee_v to_o jesus_n christ_n in_o earnest_n nor_o never_o of_o you_o be_v the_o result_n of_o your_o serious_a examination_n and_o trial_n be_v it_o not_o rather_o a_o guess_v of_o fanciful_a opinion_n that_o you_o believe_v
never_o know_v all_o along_o your_o life_n what_o these_o thing_n mean_v have_v need_n to_o stand_v the_o more_o in_o awe_n and_o to_o be_v afraid_a when_o you_o come_v near_o death_n though_o it_o be_v a_o sad_a matter_n that_o when_o we_o shall_v be_v preach_v and_o will_v fain_o preach_v the_o doctrine_n of_o faith_n it_o shall_v by_o reason_n of_o your_o delusion_n be_v the_o great_a part_n of_o our_o work_n to_o be_v thus_o dig_v you_o out_o of_o your_o presumption_n and_o overturning_a your_o carnal_a and_o ill-grounded_a hope_n yet_o we_o have_v the_o great_a confidence_n and_o the_o more_o peace_n to_o speak_v to_o and_o insist_v in_o these_o truth_n because_o they_o lie_v so_o near_o to_o the_o great_a design_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o to_o your_o immortal_a soul_n salvation_n and_o though_o we_o be_v able_a to_o preach_v more_o plausible_a and_o sweet_a thing_n to_o you_o yet_o if_o these_o doctrine_n profit_v you_o not_o these_o will_v not_o sâ—ing_v therefore_o they_o be_v so_o profitable_a we_o shall_v not_o weary_v to_o speak_v and_o you_o shall_v not_o weary_v to_o hear_v they_o speak_v of_o will_v to_o god_n you_o be_v serious_o â—nd_v sincere_o aim_v to_o be_v clear_a and_o through_o in_o the_o matter_n of_o believe_v and_o that_o you_o stand_v in_o need_n and_o be_v more_o capable_a of_o more_o pleasant_a truth_n if_o so_o we_o may_v have_v more_o several_a time_n hint_v at_o already_o to_o which_o there_o be_v good_a ground_n to_o speak_v it_o be_v the_o design_n and_o purpose_n of_o these_o word_n to_o hold_v forth_o of_o what_o great_a concernment_n believe_v be_v and_o of_o what_o great_a difficulty_n it_o be_v and_o so_o many_o be_v to_o the_o ruin_n of_o their_o soul_n mistake_v about_o it_o there_o be_v ground_n to_o draw_v this_o use_n of_o exhortation_n from_o it_o to_o wit_n that_o then_o all_o the_o hearer_n of_o this_o gospel_n will_v be_v exhort_v to_o advert_v well_o to_o this_o that_o they_o make_v faith_n sure_a in_o itself_o and_o that_o they_o make_v it_o sure_a to_o themselves_o see_v as_o i_o say_v so_o many_o be_v mistake_v about_o it_o and_o beguile_v themselves_o the_o more_o press_o that_o the_o gospel_n call_v for_o faith_n in_o christ_n and_o the_o more_o weighty_o the_o lord_n expostulate_v with_o the_o hearer_n of_o the_o gospel_n because_o of_o their_o unbelief_n they_o be_v doubtless_o so_o much_o the_o more_o concern_v to_o receive_v it_o in_o its_o offer_n and_o also_o to_o look_v well_o that_o they_o content_v not_o themselves_o with_o guess_v at_o faith_n and_o that_o they_o never_o think_v that_o thing_n be_v well_o with_o they_o except_o they_o can_v give_v good_a proof_n and_o warrant_v that_o they_o be_v so_o and_o that_o it_o be_v save_v faith_n that_o they_o have_v see_v there_o be_v so_o many_o that_o satisfy_v themselves_o as_o be_v believer_n when_o yet_o so_o few_o be_v believer_n indâ—ed_v the_o sâ—d_a mistake_n and_o disappointment_n of_o many_o shall_v have_v so_o much_o influence_n upon_o we_o as_o to_o put_v we_o to_o more_o watchfulness_n and_o to_o a_o more_o narrow_a trial_n of_o our_o own_o state_n and_o condition_n that_o we_o may_v know_v how_o it_o be_v with_o we_o all_o that_o we_o have_v speak_v to_o the_o doctrine_n of_o this_o first_o part_n of_o the_o verse_n may_v be_v as_o so_o many_o motive_n to_o stir_v you_o up_o to_o both_o these_o and_o will_v to_o god_n we_o can_v be_v persuade_v to_o this_o as_o the_o use_v of_o so_o many_o preach_n once_o to_o admit_v and_o take_v it_o for_o grant_v that_o it_o be_v the_o truth_n of_o god_n that_o there_o be_v a_o necessity_n a_o absolute_a necessity_n for_o we_o to_o be_v real_o roll_v and_o casten_z over_o upon_o jesus_n christ_n by_o faith_n for_o attain_v of_o life_n through_o he_o though_o this_o be_v a_o very_a common_a doctrine_n and_o you_o will_v think_v a_o very_a common_a use_n of_o it_o yet_o it_o be_v the_o great_a thing_n that_o god_n require_v in_o the_o gospel_n and_o the_o neglect_n of_o it_o or_o not_o receive_v his_o son_n the_o very_a contest_v and_o quarrel_v that_o god_n have_v with_o the_o hearer_n of_o it_o and_o the_o cause_n of_o the_o ruin_n of_o so_o many_o soul_n that_o perish_v under_o the_o gospel_n we_o shall_v therefore_o propose_v to_o you_o some_o consideration_n that_o may_v stir_v you_o up_o to_o this_o and_o brief_o answer_v a_o question_n in_o each_o of_o these_o two_o branch_n of_o the_o use_n and_o first_o for_o stir_v you_o up_o to_o this_o receive_n of_o christ_n by_o faith_n 1._o consider_v if_o there_o be_v not_o a_o stand_a quarrel_n and_o contraversie_n betwixt_o god_n and_o you_o for_o sin_n and_o if_o there_o be_v as_o no_o doubt_n there_o be_v consider_v how_o that_o contraversie_n be_v to_o be_v remove_v be_v there_o any_o other_o possible_a way_n but_o by_o faith_n in_o christ_n if_o we_o be_v preach_v to_o such_o as_o have_v never_o sin_v and_o be_v never_o under_o the_o hazard_n of_o the._n wrath_n of_o god_n there_o may_v possible_o be_v a_o difficulty_n to_o persuade_v to_o a_o receive_n of_o christ_n but_o when_o you_o have_v all_o this_o in_o your_o conscience_n that_o there_o be_v sin_n and_o a_o curse_n follow_v sin_n and_o that_o there_o be_v no_o other_o way_n for_o remove_v that_o curse_n but_o by_o jesus_n christ_n be_v there_o not_o reason_n to_o expect_v that_o you_o shall_v receive_v this_o truth_n will_v any_o of_o you_o think_v to_o stand_v and_o bide_v it_o out_o against_o god_n and_o if_o not_o then_o there_o be_v sure_a a_o necessity_n of_o believe_v in_o jesus_n christ_n or_o of_o lie_v under_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n for_o ever_o 2._o consider_v that_o this_o gospel_n and_o word_n of_o salvation_n be_v preach_v to_o you_o in_o particular_a when_o we_o speak_v of_o salvation_n we_o do_v not_o say_v that_o christ_n be_v once_o preach_v to_o the_o jew_n or_o that_o in_o such_o a_o far-off_a nation_n there_o be_v a_o door_n open_v for_o salvation_n in_o the_o gospel_n but_o we_o will_v turn_v over_o the_o word_n of_o the_o apostle_n act_n 13.38_o to_o you_o and_o say_v to_o you_o in_o his_o word_n be_v it_o know_v to_o you_o therefore_o man_n and_o brethren_n that_o through_o this_o man_n to_o wit_n jesus_n christ_n be_v preach_v to_o you_o remission_n of_o sin_n etc._n etc._n and_o this_o bring_v the_o gospel_n near_o you_o even_o to_o your_o door_n it_o lay_v before_o you_o the_o way_n of_o access_n to_o god_n by_o christ_n and_o put_v it_o so_o close_o and_o home_o to_o you_o that_o christ_n must_v either_o have_v a_o refusal_n or_o a_o welcome_a from_o you_o the_o first_o consideration_n of_o your_o own_o sinfulness_n and_o misery_n may_v put_v you_o to_o seek_v after_o a_o saviour_n though_o he_o be_v at_o a_o great_a distance_n but_o this_o other_o bring_v he_o to_o your_o heart_n and_o mouth_n and_o be_v it_o fit_a think_v you_o to_o neglect_v such_o a_o fair_a occasion_n and_o will_v it_o be_v wisdom_n when_o salvation_n follow_v you_o and_o cry_v after_o you_o and_o wisdom_n lift_v up_o its_o voice_n in_o the_o street_n say_v o_o you_o simple_a one_o how_o long_o will_v you_o love_v foolishness_n etc._n etc._n to_o stop_v your_o ear_n or_o to_o turn_v away_o from_o christ_n and_o to_o run_v upon_o your_o destruction_n do_v you_o think_v that_o this_o gospel_n will_v be_v silent_a always_o or_o that_o your_o conscience_n will_v be_v deaf_a and_o dumb_a always_o there_o be_v many_o nation_n that_o have_v not_o the_o gospel_n so_o near_o they_o and_o it_o be_v hard_a to_o know_v but_o the_o day_n may_v come_v when_o you_o will_v be_v content_a to_o buy_v a_o offer_n of_o the_o gospel_n at_o a_o dear_a raâ—e_n and_o when_o there_o shall_v not_o be_v a_o tryster_n nor_o a_o dâ—ys-man_n to_o be_v have_v between_o god_n and_o you_o and_o these_o day_n will_v then_o be_v remember_v with_o horror_n which_o now_o you_o secure_o slip_v over_o 3._o consider_v what_o contemplation_n but_o also_o and_o main_o that_o your_o affection_n may_v be_v delight_v in_o he_o and_o that_o your_o faith_n may_v without_o hink_v or_o hesitation_n come_v to_o give_v he_o credit_n ignorance_n of_o christ_n breed_v disestimation_n and_o disestimation_n make_v you_o not_o to_o give_v he_o credit_n and_o thus_o you_o be_v keep_v at_o a_o distance_n from_o he_o there_o be_v no_o where_o folk_n have_v any_o just_a estimation_n of_o christ_n and_o of_o his_o worth_n and_o be_v sensible_a of_o the_o evil_a of_o unbelief_n there_o will_v also_o be_v some_o sense_n of_o the_o sin_n of_o undervalue_v of_o he_o and_o the_o more_o sense_n they_o have_v of_o the_o evil_a of_o unbelief_n they_o will_v be_v the_o more_o sensible_a of_o their_o undervalue_v of_o he_o and_o will_v with_o the_o prophet_n here_o cry_v out_o he_o be_v despise_v and_o we_o esteem_v he_o not_o and_o from_o both_o these_o you_o may_v see_v the_o necessity_n of_o study_v to_o find_v out_o this_o corruption_n the_o search_n and_o discovery_n whereof_o will_v insight_n you_o in_o the_o evil_a and_o perverseness_n of_o your_o nature_n and_o so_o deep_o humble_v you_o and_o also_o serve_v high_o grace_n which_o be_v not_o peculiar_a and_o save_a but_o common_a to_o believer_n with_o other_o be_v bestow_v upon_o professor_n in_o the_o visible_a church_n or_o as_o they_o be_v peculiar_a and_o save_a such_o as_o faith_n justification_n adoption_n etc._n etc._n now_o when_o we_o say_v that_o christ_n suffering_n and_o death_n be_v a_o price_n for_o the_o sin_n of_o his_o people_n we_o exclude_v not_o the_o reprobate_n simple_o from_o temporal_a and_o common_a favour_n and_o mercy_n that_o come_v by_o his_o death_n they_o may_v have_v and_o actual_o have_v common_a gift_n and_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n the_o mean_n of_o grace_n which_o be_v some_o way_n effect_n and_o fruit_n of_o the_o same_o covenant_n but_o we_o say_v that_o the_o reprobate_n partake_v not_o of_o save_v mercy_n and_o that_o christ_n death_n be_v a_o satisfaction_n only_o for_o the_o elect_n and_o that_o none_o other_o get_v pardon_n of_o sin_n faith_n repentance_n etc._n etc._n by_o it_o but_o they_o only_o it_o be_v intend_v for_o none_o other_o and_o this_o we_o clear_a and_o confirm_v from_o and_o by_o these_o follow_a ground_n and_o argument_n which_o we_o shall_v short_o hint_n at_o the_o 1._o argument_n be_v draw_v from_o this_o same_o assertion_n of_o the_o prophet_n thus_o if_o christ_n death_n be_v only_o a_o satisfaction_n for_o the_o sin_n of_o god_n people_n than_o it_o be_v not_o a_o satisfaction_n for_o the_o sin_n of_o all_o but_o it_o be_v a_o satisfaction_n only_o for_o the_o sin_n of_o god_n people_n therefore_o not_o for_o all_o for_o his_o people_n be_v not_o justification_n whereby_o â—hâ—y_o may_v come_v or_o not_o come_v to_o it_o and_o so_o to_o make_v it_o possible_a buâ—_n that_o which_o he_o intend_v be_v that_o their_o justification_n may_v it_o hirg_v justification_n on_o the_o free_a will_n of_o the_o creature_n &_o so_o in_o strive_v to_o make_v grace_n broad_a than_o god_n allow_v they_o come_v to_o make_v it_o none_o at_o all_o by_o leave_v it_o on_o man_n freewill_n whether_o it_o shall_v be_v effectual_a or_o not_o but_o bless_v be_v god_n the_o covenant_n of_o god_n be_v not_o on_o these_o term_n for_o it_o be_v say_v here_o that_o by_o his_o knowledge_n he_o shall_v justify_v many_o 2._o it_o give_v we_o these_o two_o practical_a uses_n 1._o it_o show_v what_o shall_v be_v our_o intendment_n in_o our_o usemaking_a of_o christ_n death_n and_o that_o be_v that_o we_o may_v be_v justify_v and_o absolve_v by_o it_o even_o to_o make_v use_n of_o it_o for_o attain_v to_o pardon_n of_o sin_n and_o peace_n with_o god_n if_o this_o be_v over-looked_n and_o neglect_v all_o
in_o his_o justice_n and_o mercy_n they_o do_v what_o they_o can_v that_o god_n shall_v neither_o be_v just_a nor_o gracious_a but_o he_o shall_v be_v just_o in_o condemn_v they_o whether_o they_o will_v or_o not_o though_o he_o be_v not_o glorify_v in_o his_o grace_n as_o to_o they_o they_o set_v themselves_o what_o they_o can_v to_o let_v it_o yet_o in_o his_o justice_n he_o shall_v most_o certain_o be_v glorify_v o_o that_o man_n and_o woman_n believe_v how_o deep_o their_o gild_n draw_v who_o be_v find_v stand_v in_o the_o way_n of_o the_o glorify_v of_o god_n grace_n it_o will_v be_v will_v be_v find_v to_o have_v do_v this_o and_o to_o have_v come_v short_a of_o righteousness_n for_o the_o 3d._a thâ—t_n be_v the_o meritorious_a cause_n take_v it_o in_o this_o doctrine_n that_o the_o meritorious_a cause_n that_o procure_v our_o justification_n and_o with_o respect_n to_o which_o god_n justify_v a_o sinner_n be_v the_o alone_a merit_n and_o satisfaction_n of_o christ_n jesus_n and_o this_o arise_v from_o the_o text_n on_o these_o two_o consideration_n 1._o because_o this_o justification_n be_v lay_v down_o as_o a_o effect_n of_o christ_n soul-travel_n and_o suffer_v and_o if_o justification_n be_v the_o proper_a and_o immediate_a effect_n of_o christ_n suffering_n then_o his_o soul-suffering_n must_v be_v the_o meritorious_a cause_n of_o it_o we_o can_v imagine_v another_o he_o purpose_v by_o his_o suffering_n for_o the_o elect_a that_o they_o shall_v by_o his_o knowledge_n be_v justify_v therefore_o they_o must_v be_v absolve_v and_o justify_v by_o his_o interpose_v to_o tâ—â—â—_n on_o their_o debt_n and_o to_o his_o suffering_n must_v be_v the_o procure_a cause_n of_o it_o the_o 2._o consideration_n be_v take_v from_o the_o word_n follow_v he_o shall_v justify_v many_o for_o he_o shall_v bear_v their_o iniquity_n if_o christ_n bear_v of_o our_o iniquity_n be_v the_o ground_n of_o our_o justification_n or_o that_o by_o which_o it_o be_v then_o that_o christ_n satisfaction_n be_v not_o only_o the_o meritorious_a cause_n of_o justification_n but_o also_o 1._o it_o be_v the_o near_a and_o most_o immediate_a cause_n 2._o the_o alone_a meritorious_a cause_n 3._o the_o meritorious_a cause_n as_o contradistinguish_v from_o and_o oppose_v to_o our_o own_o work_n and_o inherent_a righteousness_n 4._o it_o be_v the_o meritorious_a cause_n as_o inherent_a in_o he_o and_o as_o impute_v to_o we_o these_o four_o be_v clear_a in_o the_o text_n and_o may_v very_o well_o be_v put_v in_o the_o doctrine_n 1._o then_o we_o say_v it_o be_v not_o only_o the_o meritoritorious_a cause_n but_o the_o next_o immediate_a cause_n causa_fw-la repinqua_fw-la as_o we_o use_v to_o speak_v in_o the_o school_n of_o our_o justification_n so_o that_o if_o it_o be_v ask_v what_o be_v the_o cause_n or_o ground_n on_o which_o god_n absolve_v a_o sinner_n or_o the_o next_o immediate_a thing_n that_o he_o have_v a_o respect_n to_o in_o his_o justify_n of_o he_o it_o be_v christ_n merit_n his_o soul-travel_n and_o suffer_v papist_n deny_v this_o and_o make_v the_o next_o immediate_a cause_n to_o be_v the_o grace_n infuse_v in_o we_o that_o which_o be_v call_v gratia_fw-la gratum_fw-la faciens_fw-la but_o if_o you_o ask_v the_o prophet_n what_o be_v the_o ground_n i_o mean_v the_o next_o immediate_a cause_n on_o which_o justification_n be_v deryve_v to_o many_o he_o tell_v we_o that_o it_o be_v not_o the_o inherent_a righteousness_n of_o these_o who_o be_v justify_v but_o that_o it_o be_v christ_n soul-travel_n and_o his_o bear_n only_o by_o christ_n have_v we_o a_o righteousness_n that_o make_v we_o acceptable_a to_o god_n but_o his_o righteousness_n be_v we_o and_o god_n respect_v of_o we_o in_o or_o through_o it_o make_v we_o acceptable_a 2_o not_o only_o be_v his_o righteousness_n the_o meritorious_a cause_n but_o it_o be_v the_o only_a meritorious_a or_o the_o alone_a meritorious_a cause_n and_o herein_o papist_n and_o we_o differ_v they_o grant_v that_o christ_n satisfaction_n be_v the_o meritorious_a cause_n but_o remot_o only_o as_o it_o procure_v inward_a or_o inherent_a grace_n by_o which_o we_o merit_v but_o they_o will_v not_o have_v it_o to_o be_v the_o only_a meritorious_a cause_n but_o will_v needs_o have_v our_o own_o work_n to_o merit_v also_o and_o that_o proper_o whereas_o the_o prophet_n speak_v of_o justification_n as_o the_o effect_n of_o christ_n soul-travel_n only_o and_o if_o so_o then_o there_o can_v be_v no_o other_o thing_n admit_v for_o there_o can_v be_v two_o social_a or_o joint_a meritorious_a cause_n therefore_o throughout_o the_o scripture_n when_o the_o merit_n of_o justification_n be_v attribute_v to_o christ_n it_o exclude_v all_o other_o thing_n and_o be_v oppose_v to_o our_o own_o work_n which_o be_v the_o three_o thing_n 3_o then_o we_o say_v that_o christ_n righteousness_n be_v the_o meritorious_a cause_n of_o our_o justification_n as_o vvn_n from_o and_o oppose_v to_o our_o own_o inherent_a righteousness_n or_o work_n and_o herein_o also_o papist_n and_o we_o differ_v they_o grant_v indeed_o a_o meritorious_a influence_n to_o christ_n righteousness_n but_o that_o be_v say_v they_o as_o it_o make_v our_o own_o righteousness_n meritorious_a not_o as_o vvn_n from_o and_o oppose_v to_o our_o own_o righteousness_n but_o as_o have_v my_o own_o righteousness_n which_o be_v of_o the_o law_n out_o that_o which_o be_v through_o the_o faith_n of_o christ_n where_o paul_n consult_v and_o resolve_v what_o he_o will_v betake_v himself_o to_o as_o his_o defence_n at_o the_o bar_n of_o god_n we_o see_v 1._o that_o it_o be_v his_o scope_n and_o design_n that_o in_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n he_o may_v be_v find_v in_o such_o a_o case_n and_o posture_n that_o he_o may_v be_v able_a to_o abide_v the_o trial_n and_o 2._o that_o he_o speak_v of_o two_o righteousness_n the_o one_o be_v his_o own_o that_o be_v the_o inherent_a grace_n which_o he_o have_v get_v and_o the_o work_n which_o he_o have_v do_v the_o other_o be_v the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n without_o he_o which_o be_v by_o faith_n now_o when_o he_o lay_v his_o reckon_n he_o be_v so_o far_o from_o join_v these_o two_o together_o as_o concause_n or_o social_n cause_n of_o his_o justification_n that_o he_o oppose_v they_o that_o i_o may_v be_v find_v in_o he_o not_o have_v my_o own_o righteousness_n in_o he_o without_o my_o own_o or_o not_o have_v my_o own_o etc._n etc._n in_o he_o as_o have_v give_v up_o with_o deny_v and_o renunce_v my_o own_o righteousness_n he_o will_v not_o admit_v of_o that_o on_o any_o term_n in_o less_o or_o in_o more_o so_o clear_o do_v he_o as_o to_o his_o
comprehend_v the_o way_n of_o a_o sinner_n justification_n in_o the_o gospel_n covenant_n and_o promise_n and_o make_v offer_v of_o it_o to_o all_o that_o hear_v of_o it_o say_v he_o that_o believe_v in_o the_o son_n shall_v not_o perish_v but_o have_v eternal_a life_n and_o all_o that_o believe_v on_o he_o shall_v be_v justify_v from_o all_o thing_n whereby_o they_o can_v not_o be_v justify_v forgive_v who_o sin_n be_v cover_v to_o who_o the_o lord_n imput_v to_o iniquity_n and_o in_o these_o rom._n 8.1_o there_o be_v therefore_o now_o no_o condemnation_n to_o they_o who_o be_v in_o christ_n jesus_n etc._n etc._n even_o as_o before_o he_o flee_v to_o christ_n there_o be_v a_o curse_n stand_v against_o he_o and_o this_o be_v a_o act_n of_o god_n the_o sovereign_n and_o efficient_a cause_n to_o declare_v his_o righteousness_n that_o he_o may_v be_v just_a and_o the_o justifier_n of_o he_o that_o believe_v in_o jesus_n as_o it_o be_v rom._n 3.26_o which_o be_v the_o final_a cause_n we_o may_v confirm_v this_o either_o as_o to_o the_o positive_a part_n that_o by_o believe_v a_o sinner_n be_v justify_v or_o as_o to_o the_o negative_a part_n that_o there_o be_v no_o other_o way_n possible_a whereby_o a_o sinner_n can_v be_v justify_v but_o by_o believe_v so_o that_o this_o great_a effect_n follow_v from_o a_o sensible_a sinner_n take_v hold_v of_o christ_n righteousness_n by_o faith_n you_o may_v look_v upon_o a_o few_o scripture_n to_o this_o purpose_n as_o namely_o gal._n 2.16_o where_o the_o apostle_n enter_v in_o the_o debate_n lay_v down_o this_o faith_n to_o be_v absolve_v before_o god_n which_o by_o the_o law_n or_o the_o work_v of_o the_o law_n will_v never_o have_v be_v see_v also_o to_o this_o purpose_n the_o epistle_n to_o the_o roman_n 1_o 2_o 3_o 4._o and_o 5._o chapter_n especial_o the_o 3_o and_o 4._o in_o the_o 3d._n chap._n v._o 25._o when_o he_o be_v sum_v the_o doctrine_n of_o justification_n into_o a_o compend_n he_o say_v who_o god_n have_v set_v forth_o to_o be_v a_o propitiation_n through_o faith_n to_o declare_v his_o righteousness_n for_o the_o remission_n of_o sin_n etc._n etc._n where_o christ_n righteousness_n be_v call_v a_o propitiation_n through_o faith_n and_o faith_n be_v hold_v out_o as_o the_o channel_n in_o which_o justification_n run_v and_o in_o the_o word_n follow_v the_o believer_n be_v hold_v out_o as_o the_o object_n of_o it_o so_o chap._n 4._o it_o be_v hold_v out_o in_o the_o instance_n of_o abraham_n particular_o v._o 5._o to_o he_o that_o work_v not_o but_o believe_v on_o he_o that_o which_o speak_v the_o sinner_n to_o be_v empty_a and_o nothing_o empty_v the_o sinner_n more_o than_o faith_n it_o be_v the_o great_a act_n of_o faith_n to_o bring_v the_o soul_n of_o its_o own_o 14.16_o as_o if_o he_o have_v say_v if_o it_o be_v by_o any_o other_o thing_n it_o can_v not_o be_v by_o grace_n but_o faith_n claim_v nothing_o but_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n to_o rest_v as_o intercessor_n appear_v in_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n for_o we_o we_o shall_v speak_v here_o to_o these_o five_o thing_n 1._o wherein_o this_o be_v comfortable_a or_o to_o the_o extent_n of_o it_o 2._o to_o the_o advantage_n that_o follow_v on_o it_o 3._o to_o the_o ground_n of_o this_o consolation_n which_o be_v confirmation_n of_o it_o 4._o to_o this_o at_o what_o time_n and_o particular_a occasion_n the_o people_n of_o god_n may_v and_o aught_o in_o a_o special_a manner_n to_o make_v use_n of_o and_o comfort_v themselves_o in_o it_o and_o 5._o on_o what_o term_n this_o consolation_n be_v allow_v that_o they_o grow_v not_o vain_a and_o proud_a of_o it_o for_o the_o first_o our_o lord_n intercession_n give_v a_o fourfold_a extent_n of_o consolation_n that_o make_v he_o he_o will_v not_o refuse_v to_o be_v employ_v by_o you_o by_o he_o therefore_o as_o the_o apostle_n exhort_v heb._n 1â—_n 15_o let_v we_o offer_v praise_n to_o god_n continual_o and_o as_o praise_v so_o the_o sacrifice_n of_o other_o duty_n and_o they_o shall_v be_v accept_v as_o the_o offer_n oâ—_n the_o gospel_n run_v on_o a_o universality_n and_o exclude_v none_o but_o these_o that_o our_o worship_v of_o god_n with_o that_o which_o be_v practical_a and_o serve_v to_o bring_v we_o under_o a_o awe_n and_o reverence_n of_o the_o majesty_n of_o god_n then_o give_v ourselves_o to_o that_o which_o do_v indispose_v and_o disquiet_v we_o and_o i_o shall_v close_v all_o with_o this_o word_n that_o we_o will_v even_o admire_v how_o soul_n be_v carry_v and_o bring_v to_o heaven_n that_o we_o shall_v be_v suffer_v to_o pray_v and_o that_o god_n break_v not_o out_o upon_o we_o and_o we_o will_v study_v to_o be_v deep_o humble_v for_o our_o ignorance_n of_o god_n and_o of_o christ_n and_o will_v think_v ourselves_o to_o be_v much_o in_o his_o debt_n and_o common_a for_o teach_v we_o to_o make_v right_a use_n of_o he_o see_v we_o be_v so_o ready_a to_o miscarry_v even_o when_o we_o desire_v and_o endeavour_v to_o make_v use_n of_o he_o sermon_n lxxi_o isaiah_n liii_o xii_o verse_n 12._o and_o he_o make_v intercession_n for_o the_o transgressor_n the_o great_a privilege_n that_o we_o have_v by_o the_o gospel_n do_v often_o hold_v forth_o the_o great_a aggravation_n of_o our_o sin_n as_o be_v against_o so_o great_a and_o excellent_a privilege_n now_o that_o invest_v with_o this_o office_n to_o be_v a_o intercessor_n than_o it_o must_v be_v a_o ground_n of_o expostulation_n with_o and_o reproof_n of_o these_o who_o shall_v be_v find_v slighter_n of_o his_o intercession_n for_o if_o it_o be_v a_o duty_n to_o improve_v his_o intercession_n and_o if_o it_o be_v a_o mercy_n that_o we_o have_v it_o and_o if_o many_o advantage_n be_v get_v by_o it_o than_o it_o must_v be_v a_o grievous_a sin_n a_o matter_n of_o just_a challenge_n and_o great_a shame_n that_o sinner_n shall_v have_v such_o a_o advocate_n and_o intercessor_n provide_v for_o they_o to_o take_v and_o plead_v their_o cause_n so_o free_o and_o to_o manage_v it_o so_o dexterous_o as_o he_o do_v and_o yet_o to_o slight_v he_o and_o not_o to_o put_v that_o trust_n in_o he_o as_o to_o commit_v their_o cause_n to_o he_o in_o prosecute_a of_o this_o use_n we_o shall_v 1._o show_v that_o there_o be_v such_o a_o sin_n as_o not_o improve_n of_o christ_n intercession_n and_o how_o it_o be_v fall_v into_o 2._o the_o cause_n of_o it_o or_o whence_o it_o come_v that_o folk_n so_o much_o misken_fw-mi this_o part_n of_o christ_n office_n 3._o the_o great_a inconvenience_n that_o follow_v on_o it_o and_o the_o prejudices_fw-la that_o be_v sustain_v by_o it_o 4._o we_o shall_v hint_n at_o some_o symptom_n and_o evidence_n where_o this_o sin_n be_v and_o 5._o speak_v a_o word_n to_o the_o remedy_n in_o opposition_n thereunto_o for_o the_o first_o that_o there_o be_v such_o a_o sin_n it_o may_v be_v clear_a from_o a_o few_o consideration_n that_o may_v be_v obvious_a to_o every_o one_o of_o we_o 1._o it_o may_v be_v clear_a from_o the_o effect_n what_o be_v the_o cause_n that_o so_o many_o come_v so_o little_a speed_n in_o prayer_n that_o they_o pray_v and_o yet_o get_v not_o a_o hear_n so_o that_o in_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n it_o will_v be_v find_v that_o many_o pray_v and_o that_o their_o prayer_n be_v cast_v back_o as_o dung_n upon_o their_o face_n they_o seek_v to_o enter_v and_o be_v not_o able_a as_o it_o be_v luke_n 13._o and_o this_o will_v be_v find_v to_o be_v the_o reason_n of_o it_o that_o they_o go_v to_o god_n but_o misken_v or_o take_v not_o notice_n of_o he_o who_o be_v be_v the_o way_n the_o truth_n and_o the_o life_n for_o where_o christ_n intercession_n be_v improven_v there_o be_v a_o effect_n follow_v for_o god_n have_v lay_v it_o down_o for_o a_o solid_a ground_n that_o whosoever_o believe_v in_o he_o shall_v not_o perish_v and_o whatsoever_o you_o ask_v in_o my_o name_n it_o shall_v be_v grant_v and_o therefore_o where_o there_o be_v many_o petition_n put_v up_o to_o god_n and_o no_o answer_n at_o all_o there_o be_v sure_a a_o crack_n and_o default_n in_o folk_n make_v use_n of_o christ_n for_o god_n be_v faithful_a and_o will_v perform_v his_o promise_n 2._o and_o more_o particular_o all_o the_o member_n of_o the_o visible_a church_n may_v be_v reduce_v to_o these_o three_o rank_n and_o we_o will_v find_v a_o defect_n as_o to_o the_o usemaking_a of_o christ_n intercession_n in_o they_o all_o though_o not_o of_o the_o same_o degree_n or_o rather_o not_o of_o the_o same_o kind_n 1._o either_o they_o be_v profane_a and_o have_v not_o so_o much_o as_o a_o form_n of_o religion_n and_o such_o do_v slight_a christ_n and_o his_o intercession_n altogether_o or_o 2._o they_o be_v hypocrite_n that_o make_v a_o fashion_n of_o prayer_n but_o come_v not_o to_o god_n by_o he_o but_o at_o the_o short_a cut_v proud_o step_v forward_o and_o put_v up_o their_o suit_n upon_o the_o account_n of_o their_o own_o righteousness_n as_o they_o ground_n their_o justification_n on_o it_o and_o not_o on_o christ_n satisfaction_n so_o
they_o put_v up_o their_o prayer_n to_o god_n on_o the_o account_n of_o their_o own_o righteousness_n and_o not_o on_o the_o account_n of_o christ_n intercession_n or_o 3_o they_o be_v such_o as_o have_v something_o of_o god_n in_o they_o and_o so_o be_v believer_n and_o even_o in_o such_o there_o be_v often_o a_o great_a defect_n as_o to_o this_o as_o christ_n say_v to_o the_o disciple_n john_n 16.24_o hitherto_o you_o have_v ask_v nothing_o in_o my_o name_n he_o charge_v they_o not_o simple_o for_o not_o pray_v he_o grant_v that_o but_o you_o have_v not_o ask_v in_o my_o name_n that_o be_v you_o have_v not_o make_v use_n of_o my_o intercession_n as_o you_o shall_v have_v do_v although_o there_o be_v not_o such_o a_o defect_n in_o they_o as_o there_o be_v in_o the_o former_a two_o sort_n yet_o there_o be_v a_o great_a short-coming_a and_o not_o a_o improve_n of_o christ_n intercession_n as_o they_o shall_v and_o therefore_o 3._o it_o will_v be_v more_o clear_a if_o we_o consider_v the_o particular_a case_n incident_a to_o believer_n wherein_o we_o will_v find_v that_o but_o very_o scarce_o christ_n intercession_n be_v improven_v in_o any_o of_o they_o as_o 1._o if_o the_o believer_n have_v liberty_n in_o prayer_n he_o be_v ready_a to_o sit_v down_o on_o it_o and_o to_o conclude_v that_o he_o can_v but_o be_v hear_v because_o he_o have_v liberty_n and_o there_o be_v not_o so_o single_a a_o eye_n have_v to_o christ_n intercession_n and_o ofâ—en_o it_o be_v more_o difficult_a to_o hold_v off_o this_o sin_n when_o liberty_n be_v enjoy_v then_o when_o it_o be_v want_v because_o though_o liberty_n be_v good_a and_o desirable_a in_o itself_o yet_o through_o our_o corruption_n and_o pride_n it_o be_v often_o abuse_v even_o as_o when_o christian_n win_v to_o some_o good_a measure_n of_o holiness_n it_o be_v in_o some_o respect_n more_o difficult_a to_o rest_v upon_o christ_n righteousness_n then_o if_o that_o measure_n be_v not_o attain_v so_o be_v it_o here_o more_o difficult_a some_o way_n to_o rest_n upon_o christ_n intercession_n when_o we_o have_v liberty_n in_o prayer_n then_o when_o we_o be_v in_o bond_n and_o under_o restraint_n 2._o upon_o the_o other_o hand_n if_o we_o look_v to_o a_o believer_n when_o he_o be_v straighten_a and_o it_o go_v not_o well_o with_o he_o in_o prayer_n there_o be_v then_o ordinary_o a_o great_a defect_n in_o make_v use_n of_o christ_n intercession_n as_o if_o it_o can_v not_o in_o that_o case_n avail_v we_o and_o upon_o this_o follow_v anxiety_n and_o fret_a and_o the_o believer_n be_v ready_a to_o conclude_v he_o will_v be_v nothing_o the_o better_a of_o prayer_n and_o that_o it_o be_v better_a to_o pray_v none_o then_o to_o pray_v so_o whereas_o a_o eye_n to_o christ_n intercession_n will_v give_v the_o mind_n some_o quietness_n 3._o if_o there_o be_v a_o ill_a and_o very_a necessitous_a case_n or_o if_o there_o be_v challenge_n and_o some_o commotion_n discomposure_n and_o disquiet_n be_v in_o the_o spirit_n there_o be_v ready_o little_a respect_n have_v to_o christ_n if_o quietness_n and_o calmness_n be_v there_o be_v also_o hazard_v of_o sit_v down_o on_o that_o and_o we_o ready_o forget_v that_o we_o hold_v it_o of_o he_o and_o indeed_o it_o will_v be_v find_v difficult_a either_o to_o have_v or_o to_o want_v and_o in_o either_o the_o one_o case_n or_o the_o other_o to_o be_v make_v right_a use_n of_o his_o intercession_n now_o when_o i_o speak_v of_o this_o sin_n it_o not_o only_o reprove_v they_o that_o pray_v none_o at_o all_o which_o smell_v of_o gross_a atheism_n but_o also_o these_o who_o shuffle_v by_o christ_n and_o step_v forward_o at_o the_o near_a as_o if_o they_o be_v not_o to_o come_v to_o god_n by_o he_o as_o it_o be_v heb._n 7.25_o and_o john_n 14.6_o 2._o the_o cause_n of_o this_o sin_n and_o whence_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o folk_n so_o slight_a the_o usemaking_a of_o christ_n intercession_n 1._o there_o be_v a_o great_a difficulty_n in_o the_o thing_n it_o be_v tickle_a 2._o there_o be_v a_o natural_a averseness_n from_o and_o enmity_n at_o that_o thing_n in_o we_o 3._o there_o be_v a_o readiness_n to_o pitch_v on_o some_o other_o thing_n and_o to_o misken_fw-mi and_o over_o look_v this_o now_o let_v all_o these_o three_o be_v put_v together_o and_o we_o will_v see_v the_o reason_n and_o way_n how_o folk_n slide_v and_o fall_v into_o this_o fault_n 1._o i_o say_v there_o be_v a_o difficulty_n in_o the_o thing_n it_o be_v one_o of_o the_o most_o pure_o spiritual_a sublime_a and_o deny_v thing_n in_o all_o the_o gospel_n one_o of_o the_o great_a exercise_n of_o faith_n and_o we_o know_v that_o all_o such_o thing_n have_v to_o our_o nature_n a_o great_a difficulty_n 1._o it_o be_v a_o difficulty_n to_o bring_v a_o man_n to_o be_v but_o formal_a in_o religion_n 2._o there_o be_v a_o difficulty_n when_o he_o be_v make_v formal_a to_o make_v he_o serious_a even_o in_o a_o legal_a manner_n and_o to_o be_v any_o thing_n affect_v in_o the_o exercise_n of_o repentance_n and_o of_o other_o duty_n so_o that_o he_o be_v not_o gross_o dissemble_a 3._o when_o he_o be_v make_v thus_o serious_a it_o be_v a_o difficulty_n to_o bring_v he_o over_o that_o seriousness_n and_o to_o draw_v he_o from_o rest_v on_o these_o duty_n which_o he_o have_v be_v draw_v to_o i_o say_v it_o be_v a_o great_a and_o difficult_a work_n to_o get_v a_o man_n bring_v to_o the_o performance_n of_o holy_a duty_n and_o as_o great_a a_o work_n to_o get_v he_o bring_v over_o they_o and_o from_o rest_v on_o they_o to_o rest_v on_o christ_n righteousness_n for_o his_o justification_n and_o on_o christ_n intercession_n for_o the_o acceptance_n of_o his_o prayer_n and_o therefore_o when_o the_o lord_n have_v once_o get_v his_o disciple_n to_o pray_v and_o honest_o yoke_v and_o engage_v therein_o he_o train_v they_o on_o to_o pray_v in_o his_o name_n and_o so_o to_o get_v their_o prayer_n right_o qualify_v 2._o if_o we_o consider_v our_o nature_n we_o will_v find_v that_o there_o be_v a_o averseness_n &_o backwardness_n therein_o to_o it_o as_o there_o be_v a_o averseness_n in_o we_o to_o all_o thing_n that_o tend_v to_o the_o make_v we_o deny_v ourselves_o and_o lay_v the_o weight_n of_o every_o thing_n on_o christ_n that_o which_o thwart_v with_o our_o pride_n stand_v and_o stick_v at_o our_o stomach_n to_o speak_v so_o and_o go_v not_o well_o down_o with_o we_o of_o such_o nature_n be_v this_o for_o our_o usemaking_a of_o christ_n intercession_n imply_v that_o we_o of_o ourselves_o be_v at_o a_o distance_n with_o god_n that_o we_o have_v break_v covenant_n and_o be_v not_o to_o be_v trust_v without_o a_o mediator_n and_o there_o be_v in_o our_o nature_n a_o secret_a sort_n of_o disdain_n at_o this_o we_o can_v natural_o endure_v it_o hence_o rom._n 10._o it_o be_v say_v of_o the_o jew_n that_o be_v ignorant_a of_o god_n righteousness_n they_o do_v not_o submit_v nor_o stoop_v to_o the_o same_o but_o seek_v to_o establish_v their_o own_o righteousness_n 3._o there_o be_v a_o readiness_n to_o pitch_v and_o condescend_v almost_o on_o any_o other_o sin_n rather_o than_o on_o this_o and_o therefore_o folk_n may_v be_v long_o under_o it_o then_o under_o many_o and_o yet_o not_o be_v challenge_v for_o it_o they_o will_v ready_o be_v challenge_v for_o lie_v swear_v sabbath-breaking_a and_o the_o like_a but_o they_o sleep_v more_o secure_o in_o this_o sin_n then_o in_o most_o other_o it_o be_v a_o sin_n easy_o fall_v into_o and_o a_o sin_n not_o easy_o recover_v from_o or_o win_v out_o of_o because_o it_o be_v a_o gospel-sin_n that_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n reach_v not_o and_o that_o the_o conscience_n have_v not_o such_o a_o awe_n iâ—_n convince_a of_o it_o be_v against_o nature_n light_n to_o neglect_v prayer_n or_o to_o take_v god_n name_n in_o vain_a but_o this_o run_v in_o the_o channel_n of_o the_o gospel_n to_o pray_v in_o the_o name_n of_o christ_n and_o to_o make_v all_o our_o address_n to_o god_n through_o he_o the_o sinful_a neglect_n whereof_o can_v be_v discover_v but_o by_o gospel-light_n and_o we_o find_v by_o experience_n that_o many_o will_v be_v convince_v of_o and_o have_v challenge_n for_o out-breaking_a sin_n who_o yet_o will_v have_v no_o challenge_n for_o the_o neglect_n of_o this_o duty_n even_o as_o it_o be_v easy_a to_o convince_v folk_n of_o a_o breach_n of_o the_o law_n then_o of_o not_o believe_v in_o christ_n many_o will_v grant_v that_o ignorance_n of_o god_n be_v a_o sin_n and_o that_o irreverence_n and_o wander_v in_o prayer_n be_v sin_n who_o yet_o will_v stand_v and_o stick_v at_o this_o and_o can_v be_v get_v convince_v but_o that_o they_o still_o believe_v in_o christ_n
