the_o next_o day_n be_v more_o avert_v from_o it_o nature_n get_v strength_n against_o the_o spirit_n 29._o in_o as_o much_o therefore_o as_o sickness_n be_v a_o tentation_n &_o a_o snare_n it_o be_v by_o consequence_n well_o use_v a_o occasion_n of_o victory_n against_o impatience_n &_o self-love_n &_o of_o advancement_n in_o spiritual_a perfection_n 30._o more_o particular_o the_o exercise_n of_o mortification_n proper_a in_o the_o time_n of_o sickness_n be_v 1._o not_o to_o be_v draw_v by_o the_o pain_n &_o incommodity_n of_o it_o to_o impatience_n 2._o not_o to_o yield_v to_o a_o immoderate_a satisfaction_n of_o nature_n when_o it_o suggest_v a_o desire_n either_o of_o seek_v improper_a or_o unlawful_a remedy_n or_o when_o please_a nourishment_n refreshment_n etc._n etc._n be_v offer_v to_o us._n 3_o to_o take_v heed_n of_o spiritual_a sloth_n &_o neglect_v of_o our_o devotion_n to_o god_n of_o which_o we_o will_v speak_v when_o we_o etreate_n of_o the_o duty_n of_o prayer_n 31._o as_o concern_v the_o mortification_n of_o impatience_n by_o restrain_v the_o tongue_n from_o break_v out_o into_o complaint_n or_o murmur_n &_o the_o mind_n from_o yield_v to_o melancholy_n &_o discontent_n enough_o have_v be_v say_v in_o the_o second_o treatise_n the_o which_o may_v easy_o be_v apply_v to_o the_o present_a subject_n of_o sickness_n i_o will_v therefore_o only_o add_v these_o two_o advice_n 1._o that_o the_o infirm_a person_n will_v consider_v that_o impatience_n in_o sickness_n be_v not_o only_o harmful_a to_o the_o soul_n but_o likewise_o to_o the_o body_n too_o as_o on_o the_o contrary_a patience_n peacefullnes_n of_o mind_n and_o a_o mortify_a temperance_n which_o be_v heavenly_a ornament_n of_o the_o soul_n be_v withal_o very_o efficacious_a mean_n to_o restore_v health_n in_o as_o much_o as_o thereby_o neither_o will_v the_o patient_a out_o of_o immortification_n refuse_v bitter_a thing_n which_o be_v advantageous_a to_o health_n nor_o greedy_o seek_v please_a thing_n which_o be_v harmful_a 2._o that_o patience_n ought_v to_o be_v preserve_v at_o least_o in_o the_o superior_a soul_n although_o violence_n of_o pain_n shall_v force_v the_o patient_a to_o groan_v or_o it_o may_v be_v to_o cry_v out_o the_o which_o if_o they_o afford_v ease_n be_v not_o whole_o to_o be_v condemn_v 32._o next_o touch_v the_o mortification_n and_o moderation_n of_o the_o sensual_a appetite_n to_o be_v practise_v in_o sickness_n in_o the_o first_o place_n it_o can_v be_v deny_v but_o that_o it_o be_v lawful_a &_o fit_v for_o a_o sick_a person_n to_o desire_n &_o seek_v remedy_n proper_a in_o that_o case_n yet_o this_o be_v to_o be_v do_v without_o too_o much_o solicitude_n &_o disquietness_n of_o mind_n and_o in_o case_n such_o remedy_n can_v be_v have_v a_o content_a submission_n of_o mind_n in_o the_o want_n or_o refusal_n of_o they_o be_v of_o admirable_a virtue_n to_o advance_v the_o soul_n since_o necessity_n declare_v such_o a_o want_n to_o be_v the_o will_n of_o god_n and_o this_o for_o the_o soul_n great_a good_n a_o most_o perfect_a example_n hereof_o we_o have_v in_o our_o lord_n who_o among_o the_o other_o insupportable_a torment_n of_o the_o cross_n be_v most_o greivous_o afflict_v with_o thirst_n in_o which_o case_n he_o demand_v refreshment_n but_o all_o assuagement_n be_v deny_v he_o yea_o gall_n be_v present_v to_o he_o to_o inflame_v his_o thirst_n he_o complain_v not_o at_o all_o 33._o in_o the_o second_o place_n it_o be_v to_o be_v consider_v that_o though_o the_o same_o manner_n of_o exercise_v temperance_n by_o repress_v sensuality_n in_o the_o interior_a disposition_n of_o the_o soul_n be_v alike_o to_o be_v practise_v in_o health_n &_o sickness_n yet_o there_o be_v a_o difference_n as_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o matter_n about_o which_o such_o temperance_n be_v to_o be_v exercise_v for_o those_o meat_n and_o solace_n which_o will_v misbecome_v a_o spiritual_a person_n in_o health_n may_v be_v very_o allowable_a and_o expedient_a in_o sickness_n only_o care_n ought_v to_o be_v have_v that_o the_o yield_n to_o some_o reasonable_a pleasure_n and_o recreation_n of_o the_o sense_n may_v be_v by_o the_o direction_n of_o the_o spirit_n according_a to_o spiritual_a discretion_n for_o the_o good_a of_o the_o spirit_n so_o as_o not_o to_o hinder_v internal_a exercise_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o because_o such_o be_v god_n will_n and_o not_o that_o a_o undue_a liberty_n shall_v be_v allow_v upon_o the_o pretence_n of_o sickness_n to_o give_v the_o reins_n to_o sensual_a appetite_n so_o as_o to_o make_v the_o state_n of_o sickness_n more_o easy_a and_o pleasurable_a perhaps_o then_o that_o of_o health_n it_o be_v nothing_o considerable_a as_o in_o itself_o whether_o the_o body_n have_v ease_n or_o no_o all_o the_o matter_n be_v how_o it_o fare_v with_o the_o spirit_n if_o bodily_a ease_n may_v indeed_o be_v a_o help_n to_o the_o spirit_n
