congruity_n of_o thing_n and_o by_o the_o law_n of_o common_a sense_n and_o justice_n be_v to_o be_v punish_v in_o man._n now_o though_o our_o saviour_n be_v not_o the_o only_a person_n in_o the_o world_n who_o have_v this_o qualification_n for_o every_o man_n beside_o be_v as_o real_a a_o man_n as_o he_o be_v yet_o he_o be_v the_o only_a man_n among_o all_o mankind_n who_o by_o this_o qualification_n be_v fit_v for_o the_o effectual_a enterprise_v and_o bring_v to_o pass_v those_o other_o thing_n which_o be_v absolute_o necessary_a for_o the_o purchase_n of_o the_o release_v speak_v of_o 2._o for_o second_o the_o next_o qualification_n of_o he_o who_o be_v fit_v for_o the_o purchase_n of_o a_o release_n from_o the_o penalty_n of_o the_o law_n be_v that_o he_o must_v be_v a_o innocent_a man._n he_o be_v to_o be_v a_o lamb_n without_o spot_n or_o blemish_n and_o to_o answer_v to_o the_o paschal_n lamb_n which_o in_o this_o as_o in_o several_a other_o thing_n be_v a_o type_n of_o that_o lamb_n of_o god_n which_o shall_v take_v away_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o world_n for_o he_o who_o be_v qualify_v to_o suffer_v for_o other_o in_o order_n to_o release_v those_o other_o from_o the_o penalty_n of_o sin_n must_v not_o therefore_o be_v a_o sinner_n himself_o because_o if_o he_o be_v so_o than_o he_o must_v by_o the_o law_n of_o justice_n and_o even_o according_a to_o the_o tenor_n of_o that_o law_n which_o assign_v such_o penalty_n suffer_v the_o penalty_n for_o his_o own_o sin_n and_o he_o who_o suffer_v the_o penalty_n of_o the_o law_n for_o his_o own_o sin_n can_v therefore_o suffer_v the_o penalty_n of_o the_o law_n for_o the_o sin_n of_o other_o at_o least_o in_o the_o present_a case_n he_o can_v because_o the_o penalty_n of_o the_o law_n upon_o the_o transgression_n of_o it_o be_v the_o loss_n of_o life_n his_o own_o penalty_n exhaust_v the_o whole_a stock_n or_o possibility_n of_o his_o so_o suffer_v for_o he_o who_o have_v but_o one_o life_n and_o no_o man_n have_v more_o can_v pay_v that_o life_n but_o once_o and_o therefore_o if_o he_o lay_v it_o down_o for_o his_o own_o sin_n he_o must_v for_o that_o reason_n have_v nothing_o remain_v to_o lay_v down_o for_o the_o sin_n of_o other_o 3._o he_o who_o be_v due_o qualify_v to_o purchase_v for_o mankind_n a_o release_n from_o the_o penalty_n of_o their_o sin_n must_v be_v a_o man_n who_o life_n be_v of_o more_o value_n than_o the_o life_n of_o all_o the_o rest_n and_o the_o reason_n for_o it_o be_v plain_a and_o obvious_a because_o we_o know_v that_o the_o life_n of_o all_o the_o rest_n can_v make_v no_o such_o purchase_n and_o the_o life_n of_o all_o the_o rest_n can_v therefore_o make_v any_o such_o purchase_n because_o the_o death_n of_o no_o single_a man_n can_v make_v such_o a_o purchase_n for_o himself_o for_o what_o no_o single_a man_n death_n can_v do_v for_o himself_o that_o the_o death_n of_o all_o man_n can_v do_v for_o all_o for_o there_o be_v just_a the_o same_o proportion_n between_o all_o man_n and_o the_o death_n of_o all_o that_o there_o be_v between_o one_o man_n and_o the_o death_n of_o one_o beside_o suppose_v a_o man_n to_o be_v a_o transgressor_n of_o the_o law_n it_o look_v very_o absurd_a to_o affirm_v that_o the_o death_n of_o such_o a_o man_n which_o be_v the_o punishment_n of_o his_o transgression_n can_v be_v the_o purchase_n of_o his_o release_n from_o such_o punishment_n for_o then_o the_o selfsame_a thing_n and_o that_o be_v his_o death_n will_v bear_v a_o quite_o contrary_a character_n for_o it_o will_v be_v both_o the_o wage_n of_o his_o sin_n and_o the_o purchase_n of_o his_o ransom_n that_o be_v it_o will_v be_v the_o vengeance_n of_o the_o law_n and_o the_o meritorious_a cause_n of_o his_o freedom_n from_o the_o same_o vengeance_n every_o sinner_n therefore_o against_o the_o law_n must_v be_v a_o sufferer_n under_o the_o vengeance_n of_o the_o law_n and_o that_o law_n which_o adjudge_v those_o who_o transgress_v it_o to_o death_n do_v not_o by_o so_o do_v design_n to_o return_v they_o to_o life_n for_o if_o it_o do_v then_o by_o inflict_v its_o sentence_n it_o must_v design_n to_o revoke_v man_n who_o it_o seize_v now_o this_o be_v the_o condition_n of_o all_o man_n who_o die_v because_o they_o be_v sinner_n we_o may_v from_o hence_o safe_o conclude_v that_o if_o any_o man_n who_o be_v not_o a_o sinner_n shall_v undertake_v by_o his_o own_o death_n to_o make_v good_a the_o ransom_n of_o all_o the_o rest_n from_o death_n and_o after_o that_o shall_v make_v good_a his_o undertake_n know_v that_o the_o meritorious_a cause_n of_o death_n be_v sin_n because_o we_o know_v that_o the_o wage_n of_o sin_n be_v death_n if_o therefore_o as_o we_o have_v already_o see_v the_o sin_n of_o better_o a_o title_n to_o obedience_n than_o our_o suffering_n such_o punishment_n can_v have_v do_v have_v that_o punishment_n not_o be_v forgive_v and_o it_o look_v absurd_a at_o first_o view_n that_o gild_n shall_v consist_v in_o the_o neglect_n of_o obedience_n and_o that_o punishment_n shall_v be_v the_o desert_n and_o therefore_o in_o justice_n the_o effect_n of_o our_o gild_n and_o yet_o that_o obedience_n shall_v be_v the_o effect_n of_o our_o punishment_n that_o be_v that_o gild_n after_o one_o remove_v shall_v be_v the_o proper_a and_o in_o a_o manner_n natural_a because_o just_a cause_n of_o duty_n but_o we_o may_v be_v therefore_o sure_a that_o it_o be_v no_o such_o matter_n because_o we_o be_v tell_v by_o god_n himself_o that_o there_o be_v a_o punishment_n after_o this_o life_n which_o shall_v be_v eternal_a which_o yet_o will_v be_v impossible_a if_o the_o suffering_n of_o punishment_n be_v equivalent_a to_o a_o perfect_a obedience_n to_o the_o direction_n the_o last_o can_v only_o in_o strictness_n of_o law_n belong_v to_o those_o who_o have_v obey_v the_o law_n and_o therefore_o that_o the_o first_o can_v be_v only_a matter_n of_o favour_n whereas_o the_o last_o may_v be_v matter_n of_o right_n now_o if_o there_o be_v any_o difference_n in_o the_o two_o case_n then_o let_v that_o difference_n be_v lodge_v where_o it_o will_v yet_o we_o be_v god_n himself_o who_o can_v be_v mistake_v in_o the_o case_n must_v therefore_o needs_o be_v so_o yet_o these_o man_n as_o they_o do_v not_o sufficient_o distinguish_v between_o a_o innocent_a and_o a_o saint_n so_o neither_o do_v they_o between_o impunity_n and_o a_o reward_n for_o though_o our_o saviour_n suffering_n be_v meritorious_a of_o a_o reward_n to_o himself_o and_o so_o the_o scripture_n tell_v we_o yet_o they_o be_v only_o expiatory_a to_o we_o and_o that_o too_o in_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o thing_n for_o the_o utmost_a design_n the_o natural_a tendency_n and_o the_o only_a business_n of_o a_o expiation_n be_v to_o obtain_v a_o impunity_n for_o such_o who_o have_v deserve_v and_o therefore_o must_v in_o justice_n without_o such_o a_o expiation_n suffer_v punishment_n but_o neither_o scripture_n reason_n or_o justice_n will_v tell_v we_o that_o a_o purchase_n of_o impunity_n from_o the_o vengeance_n due_a to_o the_o transgressor_n of_o the_o law_n can_v be_v a_o purchase_n of_o that_o reward_n that_o be_v only_o due_a to_o obedience_n to_o the_o law_n in_o one_o word_n reward_n and_o punishment_n derive_v not_o only_o from_o different_a but_o from_o contrary_a principle_n and_o impunity_n have_v and_o that_o too_o in_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o thing_n a_o respect_n or_o relation_n only_o to_o punishment_n but_o none_o at_o all_o to_o reward_v and_o for_o that_o reason_n the_o meritorious_a cause_n of_o impunity_n can_v have_v no_o concern_v with_o reward_n neither_o since_o then_o the_o death_n of_o our_o saviour_n be_v the_o meritorious_a cause_n of_o pardon_n to_o those_o who_o have_v transgress_v the_o law_n it_o be_v absurd_a in_o nature_n and_o reason_n to_o make_v it_o also_o the_o meritorious_a cause_n of_o that_o reward_n which_o as_o it_o suppose_v no_o need_n of_o pardon_n so_o do_v by_o the_o law_n only_o belong_v to_o those_o who_o have_v obey_v the_o law_n so_o that_o a_o expiation_n do_v at_o the_o most_o but_o make_v a_o man_n innocent_a but_o do_v nothing_o to_o make_v he_o a_o saint_n for_o it_o only_o cancel_v his_o neglect_n of_o duty_n but_o do_v not_o do_v that_o duty_n for_o he_o which_o he_o have_v neglect_v by_o all_o which_o it_o appear_v 1._o that_o reward_n do_v in_o propriety_n and_o justice_n only_o belong_v to_o obedience_n to_o the_o law_n 2._o that_o punishment_n do_v in_o propriety_n and_o justice_n only_o belong_v to_o the_o transgression_n of_o the_o law_n 3._o that_o expiation_n have_v no_o relation_n to_o the_o reward_n of_o obedience_n but_o that_o it_o only_o concern_v that_o punishment_n which_o without_o such_o expiation_n be_v in_o justice_n due_a to_o disobedience_n now_o because_o god_n have_v teach_v we_o not_o only_o that_o our_o sin_n shall_v be_v forgive_v in_o and_o through_o our_o saviour_n but_o that_o also_o in_o and_o through_o the_o same_o saviour_n we_o shall_v obtain_v a_o glorious_a reward_n and_o because_o as_o have_v appear_v in_o general_n reward_n do_v in_o reason_n and_o justice_n as_o proper_o belong_v to_o duty_n and_o obedience_n as_o forgiveness_n do_v to_o expiation_n therefore_o our_o next_o enquiry_n must_v be_v upon_o what_o obedience_n such_o reward_n be_v ground_v for_o we_o be_v very_o sure_a that_o because_o the_o distribution_n of_o such_o reward_n be_v lodge_v in_o god_n hand_n therefore_o the_o reward_n will_v be_v bestow_v just_o and_o because_o we_o be_v sure_a of_o that_o therefore_o we_o be_v far_o assure_v that_o it_o will_v be_v confer_v upon_o duty_n and_o obedience_n and_o indeed_o have_v in_o what_o go_v before_o see_v what_o provision_n god_n have_v make_v for_o the_o fulfil_n the_o vindictive_a part_n of_o the_o law_n in_o order_n to_o the_o possibility_n and_o justice_n of_o man_n salvation_n and_o be_v satisfy_v that_o that_o provision_n which_o he_o have_v make_v for_o that_o purpose_n will_v not_o also_o fulfil_v the_o directive_n part_v of_o the_o law_n it_o must_v be_v our_o next_o business_n to_o inquire_v what_o provision_n he_o have_v make_v for_o the_o fulfil_n of_o such_o directive_n part._n for_o 1._o in_o the_o first_o place_n we_o may_v therefore_o be_v certain_a that_o it_o shall_v be_v fulfil_v one_o way_n or_o other_o because_o the_o law_n be_v god_n be_v in_o itself_o holy_a just_a and_o good_n and_o we_o know_v and_o that_o too_o by_o the_o our_o impunity_n than_o he_o have_v for_o our_o holiness_n and_o that_o he_o have_v rather_o we_o shall_v be_v safe_a than_o that_o we_o shall_v be_v good_a whereas_o our_o reason_n will_v tell_v we_o that_o god_n must_v needs_o love_v holiness_n as_o he_o love_v himself_o because_o he_o himself_o be_v if_o i_o may_v so_o speak_v essential_a holiness_n and_o then_o the_o same_o reason_n will_v tell_v we_o that_o he_o must_v needs_o love_v himself_o better_a than_o he_o love_v our_o safety_n and_o that_o more_o especial_o when_o we_o ourselves_o by_o slight_v and_o neglect_v of_o holiness_n have_v betray_v such_o our_o safety_n as_o therefore_o man_n do_v by_o his_o compliance_n with_o the_o devil_n that_o be_v by_o his_o sin_n expose_v himself_o to_o the_o prosecution_n of_o god_n of_o sin_n in_o the_o very_a nature_n of_o the_o thing_n itself_o depend_v only_o upon_o the_o desert_n of_o punishment_n can_v therefore_o rise_v no_o high_a than_o its_o fountain_n and_o therefore_o can_v at_o the_o most_o be_v but_o a_o secondary_a cause_n of_o our_o saviour_n come_v and_o therefore_o shall_v we_o suppose_v god_n to_o pardon_v sin_n though_o in_o and_o through_o our_o saviour_n without_o any_o regard_n have_v to_o the_o fulfil_n of_o the_o directive_n that_o be_v of_o the_o grand_a and_o principal_a part_n of_o the_o law_n we_o shall_v by_o that_o mean_n suppose_v he_o to_o break_v the_o directive_n part_v of_o the_o law_n in_o order_n to_o his_o contradict_v the_o vindictive_a part_n that_o be_v we_o shall_v suppose_v he_o to_o break_v both_o part_n of_o the_o law_n in_o order_n to_o such_o a_o pardon_n for_o veracity_n be_v one_o branch_n of_o holiness_n and_o when_o god_n tell_v man_n in_o his_o law_n that_o upon_o his_o transgression_n he_o shall_v sure_o that_o very_a question_n which_o they_o alone_o have_v make_v a_o question_n viz._n whether_o jesus_n christ_n die_v for_o the_o sin_n of_o man_n i_o say_v they_o will_v alter_v it_o into_o another_o question_n neither_o fit_a to_o be_v dispute_v nor_o possible_a to_o be_v determine_v by_o shortsighted_a man_n viz._n what_o god_n can_v do_v and_o what_o god_n can_v do_v whereas_o it_o be_v it_o be_v not_o the_o method_n of_o the_o divine_a proceed_n so_o neither_o be_v it_o of_o wisdom_n itself_o to_o let_v the_o measure_n of_o the_o mean_n exceed_v in_o their_o proportion_n to_o the_o design_v end_n and_o in_o any_o case_n whatsoever_o where_o less_o cost_n or_o labour_n be_v sufficient_a there_o common_a prudence_n will_v by_o no_o mean_n allow_v and_o much_o less_o approve_v our_o drudgery_n or_o profuseness_n now_o to_o bring_v what_o we_o have_v say_v to_o our_o present_a purpose_n since_o our_o saviour_n for_o the_o establishment_n of_o the_o gospel-covenant_n do_v actual_o take_v upon_o he_o our_o flesh_n and_o in_o that_o flesh_n suffer_v it_o will_v afford_v we_o no_o slight_a argument_n that_o that_o covenant_n can_v not_o have_v be_v establish_v upon_o more_o easy_a condition_n because_o our_o common_a reason_n do_v assure_v we_o that_o all_o excess_n of_o performance_n in_o the_o case_n will_v have_v be_v superfluity_n and_o our_o religion_n and_o necessary_a for_o man_n redemption_n we_o must_v inquire_v what_o have_v become_v of_o sinful_a man_n if_o the_o son_n of_o god_n have_v not_o become_v his_o saviour_n and_o if_o upon_o that_o enquiry_n it_o shall_v appear_v that_o vengeance_n without_o any_o remedy_n have_v be_v his_o portion_n than_o it_o will_v also_o appear_v at_o least_o a_o probable_a conclusion_n for_o we_o shall_v
